John 11:6-40

⁶Therefore when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed in the place where He was for two days.

⁷Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

⁸The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, just now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?”

⁹Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹⁰But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

¹¹These things He said, and after this He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awaken him.”

¹²Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep he will get well.”

¹³However, Jesus spoke about his death, but they thought that He was speaking about resting in sleep.

¹⁴Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.

¹⁵And I rejoice for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”

¹⁶Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him.”

¹⁷Therefore when He had come, Jesus found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

¹⁸Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.

¹⁹And many of the Jews had come to the women around Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother.

²⁰Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

²¹Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

²²But even now I know that whatever You may ask of God, God will give You.”

²³Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He that believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

²⁶And everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

²⁸And when she had said these things, she went out and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

²⁹As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.

³⁰Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

³¹Then the Jews who were with her in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb, so that she may weep there.”

³²Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

³³Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁶Therefore the Jews were saying, “Look how He loved him!”

³⁷But some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have done something to keep this man from dying?”

³⁸Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.

³⁹Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, said to Him, “Lord, already there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
