John 11:41-53

⁴¹They therefore took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father! I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

⁴²Yet I knew that thou hearest me always; but for the sake of the multitude standing around I said it, that they might believe that thou didst send me.

⁴³And having thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!

⁴⁴He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith to them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁵Many of the Jews therefore who had come to Mary, and had seen what he did, believed in him.

⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What are we to do, seeing that this man worketh many signs?

⁴⁸If we thus let him alone, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away both our place and nation.

⁴⁹And a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high-priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing at all;

⁵⁰nor do ye consider that it is expedient for us that one man die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.

⁵¹And this he spoke not from himself; but being high-priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation;

⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together in one body the children of God that are scattered abroad.

⁵³Therefore from that day forth they consulted together to put him to death.
