Numbers 20:1-10 in English

¹ And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

² And there was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

³ And the people strove with Moses, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah!

⁴ And why have ye brought the assembly of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our beasts?

⁵ And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

⁶ And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto them.

⁷ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

⁸ Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.

⁹ And Moses took the rod from before Jehovah, as he commanded him.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock?

¹ And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Sin, in the first month, and the people abode in Cades; and Mariam died there, and was buried there.

² And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and Aaron.

³ And the people reviled Moses, saying, Would we had died in the destruction of our brethren before the Lord!

⁴ And wherefore have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, to kill us and our cattle?

⁵ And wherefore is this? Ye have brought us up out of Egypt, that we should come into this evil place; a place where there is no sowing, neither figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there water to drink.

⁶ And Moses and Aaron went from before the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of witness, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

⁷ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

⁸ Take thy rod, and call the assembly, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye to the rock before them, and it shall give forth its waters; and ye shall bring forth for them water out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.

⁹ And Moses took his rod which was before the Lord, as the Lord commanded.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation before the rock, and said to them, Hear me, ye disobedient ones; must we bring you water out of this rock?

¹ Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock?

¹ In March/April of the next year, the Israeli people traveled/walked to the Zin Desert and ◄camped/set up their tents► near Kadesh town. While they/we were there, Moses'/my older sister Miriam died and was buried there.

² There was no water for the people to drink there, so they came to Aaron and Moses/me.

³ They complained and said, “We wish that we had died in front of Yahweh's Sacred Tent when our fellow Israelis died!

⁴ ◄Did you bring us, who are Yahweh's people, into this desert to die along with our livestock?/You brought us, who are Yahweh's people, into this desert to die along with our livestock!► RHQ

⁵ Why did you bring us from Egypt to this miserable place RHQ? There is no grain, there are no figs, no grapes, and no pomegranates here. And there is no water for us to drink!”

⁶ Aaron and Moses/I turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Sacred Tent and prostrated themselves/ourselves on the ground. Then Yahweh appeared to them/us with his bright glory,

⁷ and he said to Moses/me,

⁸ “You and Aaron must take Aaron's walking stick with you and gather all the people together. While the people are watching, command that water will flow out of that large rock over there. Water for the people will flow from it; all they and all their livestock will have enough water to drink.”

⁹ So Moses/I did what Yahweh told him/me to do. He/I took Aaron's walking stick from the place in the Sacred Tent where it was kept.

¹⁰ Then Aaron and he/I summoned all the people to gather at the rock. Then Moses/I shouted to them, “All you rebellious people, listen! Is it necessary for us to give you water from this rock?”

⁶ Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces. Yahweh’s glory appeared to them.

⁷ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

⁸ “Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”

¹ In the first month all the children of Israel came into the waste land of Zin, and put up their tents in Kadesh; there death came to Miriam, and they put her body to rest in the earth.

² And there was no water for the people: and they came together against Moses and against Aaron.

³ And the people were angry with Moses and said, If only death had overtaken us when our brothers came to their death before the Lord!

⁴ Why have you taken the Lord's people into this waste, for death to come to us and to our cattle there?

⁵ Why have you made us come out of Egypt into this evil place? This is no place of seed or figs or vines or other fruits, and there is no water for drinking.

⁶ Then Moses and Aaron went away from the people to the door of the Tent of meeting; and, falling on their faces there, they saw the glory of the Lord.

⁷ And the Lord said to Moses,

⁸ Take the rod, you and Aaron, your brother, and make all the people come together, and before their eyes give orders to the rock to give out its water; and so make water come out of the rock for them, and give the people and their cattle drink.

⁹ And Moses took the rod from before the Lord as he gave him orders.

¹⁰ Then Moses and Aaron made the people come together in front of the rock, and he said to them, Give ear now, you people whose hearts are turned from the Lord; are we to get water for you out of the rock?

¹ And the children of Israel, the whole assembly, came into the wilderness of Zin, in the first month; and the people abode at Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

² And there was no water for the assembly, and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

³ And the people contended with Moses, and spoke, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah!

⁴ And why have ye brought the congregation of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our beasts?

⁵ And why have ye made us to go up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink.

⁹ And Moses took the staff from before Jehovah, as he had commanded him.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said to them, Hear now, ye rebels: shall we bring forth to you water out of this rock?

¹ And the children of Israel, and all the multitude came into the desert of Sin, in the first month: and the people abode in Cades. And Mary died there, and was buried in the same place.

² And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron:

³ And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord.

⁴ Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die?

⁵ Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor bringeth forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink?

⁶ And Moses and Aaron leaving the multitude, went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and fell flat upon the ground, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them thy treasure, a fountain of living water, that being satisfied, they may cease to murmur. And the glory of the Lord appeared over them.

⁷ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

⁸ Take the rod, and assemble the people together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink.

⁹ Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him,

¹⁰ And having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, ye rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock?

¹ It was during the first month of the year that all the Israelites arrived in the Desert of Zin and set up camp in Kadesh. (This was where Miriam died and was buried.)

² However, there was no water there for anyone to drink, so the people gathered to confront Moses and Aaron.

³ They argued with Moses, saying, “If only we'd died with our relatives in the Lord's presence!

⁴ Why have you brought the Lord's people into this desert just so we and our livestock can die here?

⁵ Why did you lead us out of Egypt to come to this awful place? Nothing grows here—no grain or figs or vines or pomegranates. And there's no water to drink!”

⁶ Moses and Aaron left the people and went to entrance of the Tent of Meeting. There they fell facedown on the ground, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

⁷ The Lord told Moses,

⁸ “Take the walking stick and have the people gather around you. As they watch, you and your brother Aaron will order the rock and it will pour out water. You will bring water from the rock so the people and their livestock can drink.”

⁹ Moses picked up the walking stick that was kept in the Lord's presence, as he had been ordered.

¹⁰ Moses and Aaron had everyone gather in front of the rock. Moses said to them, “Listen, you bunch of rebels! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?”

¹ Then the children of Israel came with ye whole Congregation to the desert of Zin in the first moneth, and the people abode at Cadesh: where Miriam died, and was buried there.

² But there was no water for the Congregation, and they assembled them selues against Moses and against Aaron.

³ And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God we had perished, when our brethren died before the Lord.

⁴ Why haue ye thus brought the Congregation of the Lord vnto his wildernesse, that both we, and our cattell should die there?

⁵ Wherefore nowe haue yee made vs to come vp from Egypt, to bring vs into this miserable place, which is no place of seede, nor figges, nor vines, nor pomegranates? neither is there any water to drinke.

⁶ Then Moses and Aaron went from the assemblie vnto the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and fell vpon their faces: and the glory of the Lord appeared vnto them.

⁷ And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

⁸ Take the rod, and gather thou and thy brother Aaron the Congregation together, and speake yee vnto the rocke before their eyes, and it shall giue foorth his water, and thou shalt bring them water out of the rocke: so thou shalt giue the Congregation, and their beastes drinke.

⁹ Then Moses tooke the rod from before the Lord, as he had commanded him.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron gathered the Congregation together before the rocke, and Moses sayd vnto them, Heare nowe, ye rebels: shall we bring you water out of this rocke?

¹ And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

² And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron assembled the congregation before the rock, and said to them, Hear me, ye disobedient ones; must we bring you water out of this rock?

¹ And the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people abode in Rekem; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

² And there was no water for the congregation; and they gathered against Mosheh and against Aharon;

³ And the people were contentious with Mosheh, and spake, saying, Would that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!

⁴ And why have you brought the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle may die here?

⁵ And wherefore have you made us come up from Mizraim, to bring us into this evil place? This is not a place for sowing; here are neither fig trees, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there water to drink.

⁶ And Mosheh and Aharon went up from before the congregation unto the door of the tabernacle of ordinance, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of the Lord was revealed to them.

⁷ And the Lord spake with Mosheh, saying,

⁸ Take the rod, and gather the congregation together, thou and Aharon thy brother, and speak to the Rock, before their eyes, and it shall give its waters; and thou shalt bring forth water for them from the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.

⁹ And Mosheh took the rod from before the Lord, as He had commanded him.

¹⁰ And Mosheh and Aharon assembled the congregation before the rock; and he said to them: Hear now, rebels! Are we to draw forth water for you from this rock?

⁴ Why have you brought Adonai ’s assembly into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?

⁵ Why have you made us to come up out of Egypt Abode of slavery, to bring us in to this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.”

⁶ Moses Drawn out and Aaron Light-bringer went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces. The kavod Yahweh ·weighty glory of He sustains breathing· appeared to them. (RY:2, LY:3)

⁷ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out, saying,

⁸ “Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron Light-bringer your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it pour out its water. You shall bring water to them out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their livestock drink.”

⁹ Moses Drawn out took the rod from before Adonai , as he enjoined him.

¹⁰ Moses Drawn out and Aaron Light-bringer gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Sh'ma ·Hear obey· now, you rebels! Shall we bring water out of this rock for you?”

¹ So the people of Israel, the whole community, went into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; they stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

² There was no water for the community, so they assembled together against Moses and Aaron.

³ The people complained against Moses. They said, “It would have been better if we had died when our fellow Israelites died in front of Yahweh!

⁴ Why have you brought Yahweh's community into this wilderness to die here, we and our animals?

⁵ Why did you make us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this horrible place? Here there is no seed, figs, vines, or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.”

⁶ So Moses and Aaron went away from in front of the assembly. They went to the entrance of the tent of meeting and lay facedown. There Yahweh's brilliant glory appeared to them.

⁷ Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,

⁸ “Take the staff and assemble the community, you, and Aaron your brother. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and command it to flow with water. You will produce water for them out of that rock, and you must give it to the community and their cattle to drink.”

⁹ Moses took the staff from before Yahweh, as Yahweh had commanded him to do.

¹⁰ Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock. Moses said to them, “Listen now, you rebels. Must we bring water out of this rock for you?”

³ and they were turned into dissension, that is, rebelty and striving, and said, We would that we had perished among our brethren before the Lord.

⁴ Why have ye led out the church of the Lord into wilderness, that both we and our beasts die?

⁵ Why have ye made us to go up from Egypt, and have brought us into this worst place, which may not be sown, which neither bringeth forth fig trees, nor vines, neither pomegranates; furthermore and it hath not water to drink?

⁶ And when the multitude was left, Moses and Aaron entered into the tabernacle of the bond of peace, and they fell down low upon the earth, and they cried to God, and said, Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them thy treasure, a well of quick water, that when they be filled, the grutching of them cease. And the glory of the Lord appeared upon them;

⁷ and the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

⁸ Take the rod of Aaron, and gather together the people, thou, and Aaron thy brother; and speak ye to the stone before them, and it shall give out waters. And when thou hast led water out of the stone, all the multitude shall drink, and their beasts thereof.

⁹ Therefore Moses took the rod that was in the sight of the Lord, as the Lord commanded to him,

¹⁰ when the multitude was gathered before the stone; and he said to them, Hear ye, rebels, and unbelieveful; whether we may bring out of this stone water to you?

And the glory of the Lord appeared above them;)

⁷ and the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

⁸ Take the rod of Aaron, and gather together the people, thou, and Aaron thy brother; and speak ye to the stone before them, and it shall give out waters. And when thou hast led water out of the stone, all the multitude shall drink, and their beasts thereof. (Take the staff, and gather together the people, thou, and thy brother Aaron; and speak ye to the stone before them, and it shall give out water. And when thou hast led out water from the stone, all the multitude and their beasts shall drink it.)

⁹ Therefore Moses took the rod that was in the sight of the Lord, as the Lord commanded to him, (And so Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as the Lord commanded him,)

¹⁰ when the multitude was gathered before the stone; and he said to them, Hear ye, rebels, and unbelieveful; whether we may bring out of this stone water to you? (and when the multitude was gathered in front of the stone, Moses said to them, Listen, ye rebels and unbelievers; must we get water out of this stone for you?)

¹ And the sones of Israel and al the multitude camen in to the deseert of Syn, in the firste monethe. And the puple dwellide in Cades; and Marie was deed there, and biried in the same place.

² And whanne the puple hadde nede to watir, thei yeden togidere ayens Moises and Aaron; and thei weren turned in to dissensioun,

³ and seiden, We wolden that we hadden perischid among oure britheren bifor the Lord.

⁴ Whi han ye led out the chirche of the Lord in to wildirnesse, that bothe we and oure beestis die?

⁵ Whi han ye maad vs to stie from Egipt, and han brouyt vs in to this werste place, which may not be sowun, which nether bryngith forth fige tre, nether vineris, nether pumgranatis, ferthermore and hath not watir to drynke?

⁶ And whanne the multitude was left, Moises and Aaron entriden in to the tabernacle of boond of pees, and felden lowe to erthe, and crieden to God, and seiden, Lord God, here the cry of this puple, and opene to hem thi tresour, a welle of quyk watir, that whanne thei ben fillid, the grutchyng of hem ceesse. And the glorie of the Lord apperide on hem;

⁷ and the Lord spak to Moises,

⁸ and seide, Take the yerde, and gadere the puple, thou, and Aaron thi brother; and speke ye to the stoon bifore hem, and it schal yyue watris. And whanne thou hast led watir out of the stoon, al the multitude schal drynke, and the beestis therof `schulden drynke.

⁹ Therfor Moises took the yerde that was in the `siyt of the Lord, as the Lord comaundide to hym,

¹⁰ whanne the multitude was gaderid bifor the stoon; and he seide to hem, Here ye, rebel and vnbileueful; whether we moun brynge out of this stoon watir to you?

¹ And the sons of Israel come in, — all the company — to the wilderness of Zin, in the first month, and the people abide in Kadesh, and Miriam dieth there, and is buried there.

² And there hath been no water for the company, and they are assembled against Moses, and against Aaron,

³ and the people strive with Moses, and speak, saying, 'And oh that we had expired when our brethren expired before Jehovah!

⁴ and why have ye brought in the assembly of Jehovah unto this wilderness to die there, we and our beasts?

⁵ and why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to bring us in unto this evil place? no place of seed, and fig, and vine, and pomegranate; and water there is none to drink.

⁶ And Moses and Aaron go in from the presence of the assembly unto the opening of the tent of meeting, and fall on their faces, and the honour of Jehovah is seen by them.

⁷ And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

⁸ 'Take the rod, and assemble the company, thou and Aaron thy brother; and ye have spoken unto the rock before their eyes, and it hath given its water, and thou hast brought out to them water from the rock, and hast watered the company, and their beasts.'

⁹ And Moses taketh the rod from before Jehovah, as He hath commanded him,

¹⁰ and Moses and Aaron assemble the assembly unto the front of the rock, and he saith to them, 'Hear, I pray you, O rebels, from this rock do we bring out to you water?'
