⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

⁵ and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, In the morning Jehovah will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.

⁶ This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

⁷ and put fire in them, and put incense upon them before Jehovah to-morrow: and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said unto Korah, Hear now, ye sons of Levi:

⁹ seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;

¹⁰ and that he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and seek ye the priesthood also?

¹¹ Therefore thou and all thy company are gathered together against Jehovah: and Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not come up:

¹³ is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?

¹⁴ Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

¹⁵ And Moses was very wroth, and said unto Jehovah, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow:

¹⁷ and take ye every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each his censer.

¹⁸ And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the glory of Jehovah appeared unto all the congregation.

²⁰ And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

²² And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

²³ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

²⁷ So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Jehovah hath not sent me.

³⁰ But if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then ye shall understand that these men have despised Jehovah.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them;

³² and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

³⁵ And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

³⁶ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

³⁷ Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are holy,

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Jehovah; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, that is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before Jehovah; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as Jehovah spake unto him by Moses.

⁵ And he spoke to Core and all his assembly, saying, God has visited and known those that are his and who are holy, and has brought them to himself; and whom he has chosen for himself, he has brought to himself.

⁶ This do ye: take to yourselves censers, Core and all his company;

⁷ and put fire on them, and put incense on them before the Lord to-morrow; and it shall come to pass that the man whom the Lord has chosen, he shall be holy: let it be enough for you, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said to Core, Hearken to me, ye sons of Levi.

⁹ Is it a little thing for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, and brought you near to himself to minister in the services of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the tabernacle to minister for them?

¹⁰ and he has brought thee near and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee, and do ye seek to be priests also?

¹¹ Thus it is with thee and all thy congregation which is gathered together against God: and who is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiron sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not go up.

¹³ Is it a little thing that thou hast brought us up to a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, and that thou altogether rulest over us?

¹⁴ Thou art a prince, and hast thou brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and hast thou given us an inheritance of land and vineyards? wouldest thou have put out the eyes of those men? we will not go up.

¹⁵ And Moses was exceedingly indignant, and said to the Lord, Do thou take no heed to their sacrifice: I have not taken away the desire of any one of them, neither have I hurt any one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Core, Sanctify thy company, and be ready before the Lord, thou and Aaron and they, to-morrow.

¹⁷ And take each man his censer, and ye shall put incense upon them, and shall bring each one his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers, and thou and Aaron shall bring each his censer.

¹⁸ And each man took his censer, and they put on them fire, and laid incense on them; and Moses and Aaron stood by the doors of the tabernacle of witness.

¹⁹ And Core raised up against them all his company by the door of the tabernacle of witness; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, and I will consume them at once.

²² And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of spirits and of all flesh, if one man has sinned, shall the wrath of the Lord be upon the whole congregation?

²³ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak to the congregation, saying, Depart from the company of Core round about.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiron, and all the elders of Israel went with him.

²⁶ And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves from the tents of these stubborn men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest ye be consumed with them in all their sin.

²⁷ And they stood aloof from the tent of Core round about; and Dathan and Abiron went forth and stood by the doors of their tents, and their wives and their children and their store.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby shall ye know that the Lord has sent me to perform all these works, that I have not done them of myself.

²⁹ If these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord shall shew by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.

³¹ And when he ceased speaking all these words, the ground clave asunder beneath them.

³² And the ground opened, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that were with Core, and their cattle.

³³ And they went down and all that they had, alive into Hades; and the ground covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel round about them fled from the sound of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

³⁵ And fire went forth from the Lord, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

³⁷ and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, Take up the brazen censers out of the midst of the men that have been burnt, and scatter the strange fire yonder, for they have sanctified the censers

³⁸ of these sinners against their own souls, and do you make them beaten plates a covering to the altar, because they were brought before the Lord and hallowed; and they became a sign to the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest took the brazen censers, which the men who had been burnt brought near, and they put them as a covering on the altar:

⁴⁰ a memorial to the children of Israel that no stranger might draw near, who is not of the seed of Aaron, to offer incense before the Lord; so he shall not be as Core and as they that conspired with him, as the Lord spoke to him by the hand of Moses.

²⁴ Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

²⁷ So they gat them up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.

³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:

³² and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

³⁵ And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

³⁶ And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

³⁷ Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are holy;

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are holy: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar:

⁴⁰ to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to burn incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD spake unto him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ When Moses/I heard what they were saying, he/I prostrated himself/myself on the ground.

⁵ Then he/I said to Korah and those Israeli leaders who were with Korah, “Tomorrow morning Yahweh will show us whom he has chosen to be his priest, and who is holy and allowed to come near to him. Yahweh will permit only those whom he chooses to come into his presence.

⁶ So Korah, tomorrow you and those who are with you must prepare your pans to burn incense.

⁷ Then you must light a fire in them and burn the incense in the presence of Yahweh. Then we will see which one of us Yahweh has chosen to be his holy servant. It is you men who are descendants of Levi who are trying to use more authority than you should!”

⁸ Then Moses/I spoke again to Korah. He/I said, “You men who are descendants of Levi, listen to me!

⁹ The God of us Israelis has chosen all of you to be close to him in order that you can work for him at his Sacred Tent and serve the people. ◄Is that unimportant/Does that mean nothing► to you RHQ?

¹⁰ Yahweh has brought you, Korah, and your fellow descendants of Levi, near to himself. Now are you demanding to become priests also?

¹¹ It is really Yahweh against whom you and your fellow descendants of Levi are rebelling. Aaron is not the one about whom you are really complaining RHQ.”

¹² Then Moses/I summoned Dathan and Abiram, but they refused to come. They sent a message saying, “We will not come to you!

¹³ You brought us out of Egypt, which was a very fertile IDM land, in order to cause us to die here in this desert. That was bad. But now you are also trying to boss us RHQ, and that is worse.

¹⁴ You have not given us a new land to live in, a land that has good fields and vineyards. You are only trying to RHQ trick these people. So we will not come to you.”

¹⁵ Then Moses/I became very angry. He/I said to Yahweh, “Do not accept the grain offerings that they have brought. I have not taken anything from them, not even one donkey, and I have never done anything wrong to them, so they have no reason to complain about me.”

¹⁶ Then Moses/I said to Korah, “You and all those who are with you must come here tomorrow and stand in front of Yahweh. Aaron will also be here.

¹⁷ You and all the 250 men who are with you must each take a pan in which to burn incense, and put incense in it, to burn it to be an offering to Yahweh. Aaron will do the same thing.”

¹⁸ So the next day each of those men got a pan to burn incense. They put in it incense and hot coals to light it, and then they all stood at the entrance of the Sacred Tent with Aaron and Moses/me.

¹⁹ Then Korah summoned all the people who supported him and who were against Moses/me, and they also gathered at the entrance of the tent. Then the glory of Yahweh appeared to all of them/us,

²⁰ and Yahweh said to Aaron and Moses/me,

²¹ “Get away from all these people, in order that I can get rid of them immediately!”

²² But Aaron and Moses/I prostrated themselves/ourselves on the ground. We pleaded with Yahweh, saying, “God, you are the one who caused all these people to live MTY. Only one of these men has sinned; so, ◄is it right for you to be angry with all the people?/it is not right for you to be angry with all the people!► RHQ”

²³ Yahweh said to Moses/me,

²⁴ “ Okay, but tell all the people to get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

²⁵ So Moses/I stood up and went to the tents of Dathan and Abiram. The Israeli leaders followed him/me.

²⁶ He/I told the people, “Get away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything that belongs to them! If you touch anything, you will die because of their sins!”

²⁷ So all the people moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out of their tents with their wives and children and babies, and stood at the entrances of their tents.

²⁸ Then Moses/I said, “I was not the one who decided to do all these things that I have done. It was Yahweh who chose me and sent me to do them. And now he will prove that to you.

²⁹ If these men die in a normal way, then it will be clear that Yahweh did not choose me.

³⁰ But if Yahweh does something that has never happened before, if he causes the ground that is under their feet to open up and swallow these men and their families and all their possessions, and they fall into the opening and are buried while they are still alive, then you will know that these men have insulted Yahweh.”

³¹ As soon as Moses/I said this, the ground split open beneath those men.

³² It swallowed them and their families and all those who were standing there with Korah and all of their possessions.

³³ They fell into the opening in the ground while they were still alive, and all their possessions fell into the opening also. They disappeared, and the ground closed back up again.

³⁴ They screamed as they fell, and all the people who were standing nearby heard them scream. The people were terrified and cried out as they ran away, saying, “ We do not want the ground to swallow us also!”

³⁵ And then a fire from Yahweh came down from the sky and burned up the 250 men who were burning the incense!

³⁶ Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,

³⁷ “Tell Aaron's son Eleazar to take the pans that had incense in them away from the fire and to scatter the burning coals. The pans that those men were carrying are ◄holy/dedicated to me► because they burned incense to me in them.

³⁸ Those men have now died because of their sin; so Eleazar must take their pans and hammer the metal to make it become very thin. He must make a covering for the altar with that metal. Those pans were used to offer incense to me, so they are ◄holy/dedicated to me►. What happened to those pans will now warn the Israeli people.”

³⁹ So Eleazar the priest collected the 250 pans for burning incense that had been used by the men who died in the fire. He hammered the pans very thin to make a covering for the altar, as Yahweh told Moses/me should be done.

⁴⁰ That warned the Israeli people that only those who were descendants of Aaron were permitted to burn incense for an offering to Yahweh. If anyone else did that, the same thing that happened to Korah and those who were with him would happen to them.

⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

⁵ And he spoke to Core and all his assembly, saying, God has visited and known those that are his and who are holy, and has brought them to himself; and whom he has chosen for himself, he has brought to himself.

⁶ This do you°: take to yourselves censers, Core and all his company;

⁷ and put fire on them, and put incense on them before the Lord to-morrow; and it shall come to pass that the man whom the Lord has chosen, he shall be holy: let it be enough for you, you° sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said to Core, Listen to me, you° sons of Levi.

⁹ Is it a little thing for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, and brought you near to himself to minister in the services of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the tabernacle to minister for them?

¹⁰ And he has brought you near and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you, and do you° seek to be priests also?

¹¹ Thus it is with you and all your congregation which is gathered together against God: and who is Aaron, that you° murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiron sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not go up.

¹³ Is it a little thing that you have brought us up to a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, and that you altogether rule over us?

¹⁴ You are a prince, and have you brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and have you given us an inheritance of land and vineyards? would you have put out the eyes of those men? we will not go up.

¹⁵ And Moses was exceeding indignant, and said to the Lord, Do you take no heed to their sacrifice: I have not taken away the desire of any one of them, neither have I hurt any one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Core, Sanctify your company, and be ready before the Lord, you and Aaron and they, to-morrow.

¹⁷ And take each man his censer, and you° shall put incense upon them, and shall bring each one his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers, and you and Aaron shall bring each his censer.

¹⁸ And each man took his censer, and they put on them fire, and laid incense on them; and Moses and Aaron stood by the doors of the tabernacle of witness.

¹⁹ And Core raised up against them all his company by the door of the tabernacle of witness; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate your selves from the midst of this congregation, and I will consume them at once.

²² And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of spirits and of all flesh, if one man has sinned, shall the wrath of the Lord be upon the whole congregation?

²³ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak to the congregation, saying, Depart from the company of Core round about.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiron, and all the elders of Israel went with him.

²⁶ And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves from the tents of these stubborn men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest you° be consumed with them in all their sin.

²⁷ And they stood aloof from the tent of Core round about; and Dathan and Abiron went forth and stood by the doors of their tents, and their wives and their children and their store.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby shall you° know that the Lord has sent me to perform all these works, that I have not done them of myself.

²⁹ If these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord shall show by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then you° shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.

³¹ And when he ceased speaking all these words, the ground clave asunder beneath them.

³² And the ground opened, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that were with Core, and their cattle.

³³ And they went down and all that they had, alive into Hades; and the ground covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel round about them fled from the sound of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

³⁵ And fire went forth from the Lord, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

³⁶ And the Lord said to Moses,

³⁷ and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, Take up the brazen censers out of the midst of the men that have been burnt, and scatter the strange fire yonder, for they have sanctified the censers

³⁸ of these sinners against their own souls, and do you make them beaten plates a covering to the altar, because they were brought before the Lord and hallowed; and they became a sign to the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest took the brazen censers, which the men who had been burnt brought near, and they put them as a covering on the altar:

⁴⁰ a memorial to the children of Israel that no stranger might draw near, who is not of the seed of Aaron, to offer incense before the Lord; so he shall not be as Core and as they that conspired with him, as the Lord spoke to him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

⁵ He said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning, Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him. Even him whom he shall choose, he will cause to come near to him.

⁶ Do this: have Korah and all his company take censers,

⁷ put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow. It shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!”

⁸ Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi!

⁹ Is it a small thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of Yahweh’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;

¹⁴ Moreover you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We won’t come up.”

¹⁶ Moses said to Korah, “You and all your company go before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow.

¹⁷ Each man take his censer and put incense on it, and each man bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each with his censer.”

¹⁸ They each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ Korah assembled all the congregation opposite them to the door of the Tent of Meeting. Yahweh’s glory appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²¹ “Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!”

²² They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”

²³ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which those who were burned had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger who isn’t of the offspring of Aaron, would come near to burn incense before Yahweh, that he not be as Korah and as his company; as Yahweh spoke to him by Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

³⁸ even the censers of those who sinned against their own lives. Let them be beaten into plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before the LORD. Therefore they are holy. They shall be a sign to the children of Israel.”

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which those who were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger who isn’t of the offspring of Aaron, would come near to burn incense before the LORD, that he not be as Korah and as his company; as the LORD spoke to him by Moses.

⁴ And Moses, hearing this, went down on his face;

⁵ And he said to Korah and his band, In the morning the Lord will make clear who are his, and who is holy, and who may come near him: the man of his selection will be caused to come near him.

⁶ So do this: let Korah and all his band take vessels for burning perfumes;

⁷ And put spices on the fire in them before the Lord tomorrow; then the man marked out by the Lord will be holy: you take overmuch on yourselves, you sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said to Korah, Give ear now, you sons of Levi:

⁹ Does it seem only a small thing to you that the God of Israel has made you separate from the rest of Israel, letting you come near himself to do the work of the House of the Lord, and to take your place before the people to do what has to be done for them;

¹⁰ Letting you, and all your brothers the sons of Levi, come near to him? and would you now be priests?

¹¹ So you and all your band have come together against the Lord; and Aaron, who is he, that you are crying out against him?

¹² Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: and they said, We will not come up:

¹³ Is it not enough that you have taken us from a land flowing with milk and honey, to put us to death in the waste land, but now you are desiring to make yourself a chief over us?

¹⁴ And more than this, you have not taken us into a land flowing with milk and honey, or given us a heritage of fields and vine-gardens: will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.

¹⁵ Then Moses was very angry, and said to the Lord, Give no attention to their offering: not one of their asses have I taken, or done wrong to any of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, You and all your band are to come before the Lord tomorrow, you and they and Aaron:

¹⁷ And let every man take a vessel for burning perfumes, and put sweet spices in them; let every man take his vessel before the Lord, two hundred and fifty vessels; you and Aaron and everyone with his vessel.

¹⁸ So every man took his vessel and they put fire in them, with spices, and came to the door of the Tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah made all the people come together against them to the door of the Tent of meeting: and the glory of the Lord was seen by all the people.

²⁰ And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,

²¹ Come out from among this people, so that I may send sudden destruction on them.

²² Then falling down on their faces they said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, because of one man's sin will your wrath be moved against all the people?

²³ And the Lord said to Moses,

²⁴ Say to the people, Come away from the tent of Korah Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ So Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the responsible men of Israel went with him.

²⁶ And he said to the people, Come away now from the tents of these evil men, without touching anything of theirs, or you may be taken in the punishment of their sins.

²⁷ So on every side they went away from the tent of Korah Dathan, and Abiram: and Dathan and Abiram came out to the door of their tents, with their wives and their sons and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said, Now you will see that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and I have not done them of myself.

²⁹ If these men have the common death of men, or if the natural fate of all men overtakes them, then the Lord has not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord does something new, opening the earth to take them in, with everything which is theirs, and they go down living into the underworld, then it will be clear to you that the Lord has not been honoured by these men.

³¹ And while these words were on his lips, the earth under them was parted in two;

³² And the earth, opening her mouth, took them in, with their families, and all the men who were joined to Korah, and their goods.

³³ So they and all theirs went down living into the underworld, and the earth was shut over them, and they were cut off from among the meeting of the people.

³⁴ And all Israel round about them went in flight at their cry, For fear, said they, that we go down into the heart of the earth.

³⁵ Then fire came out from the Lord, burning up the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the perfume.

³⁶ And the Lord said to Moses,

³⁷ Say to Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, that he is to take out of the flames the vessels with the perfumes in them, turning the fire out of them, for they are holy;

³⁸ And let the vessels of those men, who with their lives have made payment for their sin, be hammered out into plates as a cover for the altar; for they have been offered before the Lord and are holy; so that they may be a sign to the children of Israel.

³⁹ So Eleazar the priest took the brass vessels which had been offered by those who were burned up, and they were hammered out to make a cover for the altar:

⁴⁰ To be a sign, kept in memory for ever by the children of Israel, that no man who is not of the seed of Aaron has the right of burning spices before the Lord, so that he may not be like Korah and his band: as the Lord said to him by the mouth of Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard this, he fell on his face.

⁵ And he spoke to Korah and to all his band, saying, Even to-morrow will Jehovah make known who is his, and who is holy; and he will cause him to come near to him; and him whom he has chosen, him will he cause to come near to him.

⁶ This do: take you censers, Korah, and all his band,

⁷ and put fire therein, and lay incense thereon before Jehovah to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom Jehovah doth choose, he shall be holy. It is enough, ye sons of Levi!

⁸ And Moses said to Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi!

⁹ Is it too little for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the assembly of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the work of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the assembly to minister to them?

¹⁰ — that he has brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee; and seek ye now the priesthood also?

¹¹ For which cause thou and all thy band are banded together against Jehovah; and Aaron, who is he that ye murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, We will not come up!

¹³ Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that thou must make thyself altogether a ruler over us?

¹⁴ Moreover, thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up!

¹⁵ Then Moses was very wroth, and said to Jehovah, Have no regard to their oblation: not one ass have I taken from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, Be thou and all thy band before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow.

¹⁷ And take each his censer, and put incense thereon, and present before Jehovah every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; and thou, and Aaron, each his censer.

¹⁸ And they took each his censer, and put fire on them, and laid incense thereon, and stood before the entrance to the tent of meeting, as well as Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah gathered the whole assembly against them to the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of Jehovah appeared to all the assembly.

²⁰ And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate yourselves from the midst of this assembly, and I will consume them in a moment.

²² And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh! shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with the whole assembly?

²³ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak unto the assembly, saying, Get you up from about the habitation of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spoke to the assembly, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye perish in all their sins.

²⁷ And they got up from the habitation of Koran, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. And Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the entrance of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that Jehovah has sent me to do all these deeds, for they are not out of my own heart:

²⁹ if these men die as all men die, and are visited with the visitation of all men, Jehovah has not sent me;

³⁰ but if Jehovah make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, and all that they have, and they go down alive into Sheol, then ye shall know that these men have despised Jehovah.

³¹ And it came to pass when he had ended speaking all these words, that the ground clave apart that was under them.

³² And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that belonged to Korah, and all their property.

³³ And they went down, they and all that they had, alive into Sheol, and the earth covered them; and they perished from among the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at their cry; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up!

³⁵ And there came out a fire from Jehovah, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that had presented incense.

³⁶ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

³⁷ Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning; and scatter the fire afar; for they are hallowed,

³⁸ the censers of these sinners who have forfeited their life; and they shall make them into broad plates for the covering of the altar; for they presented them before Jehovah, therefore they are hallowed; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest took the copper censers, which they that were burnt had presented; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:

⁴⁰ as a memorial to the children of Israel, that no stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron come near to burn incense before Jehovah, that he be not as Korah, and as his band, — as Jehovah had said to him through Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard this, he fell flat on his face:

⁵ And speaking to Core and all the multitude, he said: In the morning the Lord will make known who belong to him, and the holy he will join to himself: and whom he shall choose, they shall approach to him.

⁶ Do this therefore: Take every man of you your censers, thou Core, and all thy company.

⁷ And putting fire in them tomorrow, put incense upon it before the Lord: and whomsoever he shall choose, the same shall be holy: you take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And he said again to Core: Hear ye sons of Levi.

⁹ Is it a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath spared you from all the people, and joined you to himself, that you should serve him in the service of the tabernacle, and should stand before the congregation of the people, and should minister to him?

¹⁰ Did he therefore make thee and all thy brethren the sons of Levi to approach unto him, that you should challenge to yourselves the priesthood also,

¹¹ And that all thy company should stand against the Lord? for what is Aaron that you murmur against him?

¹² Then Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiron the sons of Eliab. But they answered: We will not come.

¹³ Is it a small matter to thee, that thou hast brought us out of a land that flowed with milk and honey, to kill us in the desert, except thou rule also like a lord over us?

¹⁴ Thou best brought us indeed into a land that floweth with rivers of milk and honey, and hast given us possessions of fields and vineyards; wilt thou also pull out our eyes? We will not come.

¹⁵ Moses therefore being very angry, raid to the Lord: Respect not their sacrifices: thou knowest that I have not taken of them so much as a young ass at any time, nor have injured any of them.

¹⁶ And he said to Core: Do thou and thy congregation stand apart before the Lord tomorrow, and Aaron apart.

¹⁷ Take every one of you censers, and put incense upon them, offering to the Lord two hundred and fifty censers: let Aaron also hold his censer.

¹⁸ When they had done this, Moses and Aaron standing,

¹⁹ And had drawn up all the multitude against them to the door of the tabernacle, the glory of the Lord appeared to them all.

²⁰ And the Lord speaking to Moses and Aaron, said:

²¹ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may presently destroy them.

²² They fell flat on their face, and said: O most mighty, the God of the spirits of all flesh, for one man’s sin shall thy wrath rage against all?

²³ And the Lord said to Moses:

²⁴ Command the whole people to separate themselves from the tents of Core and Dathan and Abiron.

²⁵ And Moses arose, and went to Dathan and Abiron: and the ancients of Israel following him,

²⁶ He said to the multitude: Depart from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be involved in their sins.

²⁷ And when they were departed from their tents round about, Dathan and Abiron coming out stood in the entry of their pavilions with their wives and children, and all the people.

²⁸ And Moses said: By this you shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all things that you see, and that I have not forged them of my own head:

²⁹ If these men die the common death of men, and if they be visited with a plague, wherewith others also are wont to be visited, the Lord did not send me.

³⁰ But if the Lord do a new thing, and the earth opening her mouth swallow them down, and all things that belong to them, and they go down alive into hell, you shall know that they have blasphemed the Lord.

³¹ And immediately as he had made an end of speaking, the earth broke asunder under their feet:

³² And opening her mouth, devoured them with their tents and all their substance.

³³ And they went down alive into hell the ground closing upon them, and they perished from among the people.

³⁴ But all Israel, that was standing round about, fled at the cry of them that were perishing: saying: Lest perhaps the earth swallow us up also.

³⁵ And a fire coming out from the Lord, destroyed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

³⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

³⁷ Command Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers that lie in the burning, and to scatter the fire of one side and the other: because they are sanctified

³⁸ In the deaths of the sinners: and let him beat them into plates, and fasten them to the altar, because incense hath been offered in them to the Lord, and they are sanctified, that the children of Israel may see them for a sign and a memorial.

³⁹ Then Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, wherein they had offered, whom the burning fire had devoured, and beat them into plates, fastening them to the altar:

⁴⁰ That the children of Israel might have for the time to come wherewith they should be admonished, that no stranger or any one that is not of seed of Aaron should come near to offer incense to the Lord, lest he should suffer as Core suffered, and all his congregation, according as the Lord spoke to Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard what they were saying, he fell facedown on the ground.

⁵ Then he told Korah and all those with him, “In the morning the Lord is going to make it clear who is his and who is holy, and allow that person to approach him. He will only allow whoever he chooses to approach him.

⁶ This is what you, Korah, and everyone with you are going to do. Take some incense burners,

⁷ and tomorrow put incense in them and set it on fire in the presence of the Lord. Then the man the Lord chooses is the one who is holy. It is you Levites who are taking too much power for yourselves!”

⁸ Moses also told Korah, “Listen, you Levites!

⁹ Do you think it's something insignificant that the God of Israel chose you from all the other Israelites and allowed you to approach him and carry out the work in the Lord's Tabernacle, to stand before the Israelites and serve them?

¹⁰ He has allowed you the privilege of approaching him, Korah, you and all the other Levites, but now you want to have the priesthood as well!

¹¹ So in reality you and those who have joined you are fighting against the Lord—because who is Aaron that you should complain about him?”

¹² Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they replied, “We're not going to appear before you!

¹³ Haven't you done enough by taking us away from a land flowing with milk and honey in order to kill us out here in the desert? Do you have to make yourself a dictator as well, someone to rule us?

¹⁴ On top of that you haven't taken us to a land flowing with milk and honey or given us fields and vineyards to own. Do you really think you can fool everyone? No, we will not attend!”

¹⁵ Moses got really angry and said to the Lord, “Don't accept their offerings. I have never taken even a donkey from them or treated any of them badly.”

¹⁶ Moses told Korah, “You and all those who have joined you must appear before the Lord tomorrow—all of you and Aaron too.

¹⁷ Each one will take his incense burner, put incense in it, and offer it before the Lord. All 250 of you will use your incense burners and Aaron will as well.”

¹⁸ So each one took his incense burner, put incense in it, set it on fire, and stood together with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

¹⁹ When Korah had gathered all his rebellious group at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the Lord's glory appeared before the whole congregation.

²⁰ The Lord told Moses and Aaron,

²¹ “Step away from these Israelites and I will destroy them right away.”

²² But Moses and Aaron fell facedown on the ground said, “God—God of everything that lives—when it's just one man who sins, do you have to be angry with the everybody?”

²³ Then the Lord told Moses,

²⁴ “Tell the people to move away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”

²⁵ So Moses went over to Dathan and Abiram, and the Israelite elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ He ordered the people, “Move away from the tents of these wicked men and don't touch anything that belongs to them, otherwise you will be destroyed along with them in all their sins.”

²⁷ The people moved away from the homes of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrances to their tents along with their wives, children and little ones.

²⁸ Moses said, “This is how you will know that the Lord did send me to carry out everything I've done, for it wasn't anything I thought up.

²⁹ If these men die a natural death, experiencing the destiny of every human being, then the Lord didn't sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord does something totally different, and the earth opens up and swallows them down along with everything that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have acted with contempt to the Lord.”

³¹ Immediately Moses finished saying all this the ground under the rebels split apart,

³² and the earth opened up and swallowed them and their households down, as well as everyone who was there with Korah and everything that belonged to them.

³³ They went down alive into Sheol with all that they had. The earth closed over them, and they were no more.

³⁴ When they heard their cries, all the Israelites nearby ran away, shouting, “Watch out! The earth could swallow us too!”

³⁵ Fire burst out from the Lord and burned up the 250 men who were offering incense.

³⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses,

³⁷ “Tell Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, to collect the holy incense burners from among those who have been burned up, and scatter the coals used for the incense well away from the camp.

³⁸ Have the incense burners of those who sinned at the expense of their own lives hammered into metal sheets as a covering for the altar, because they were offered before the Lord, and so have become holy. They will be a reminder to Israelites of what happened.”

³⁹ So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze incense burners used by those who had been burned up, and had them hammered out as a covering for the altar,

⁴⁰ following the instructions given to him from the Lord through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one who is not a descendant of Aaron should come and offer incense before the Lord, otherwise they could end up like Korah and those with him.

⁴ But when Moses heard it, hee fell vpon his face,

⁵ And spake to Korah and vnto all his companie, saying, To morow the Lord will shew who is his, and who is holy, and who ought to approche neere vnto him: and whom he hath chosen, hee will cause to come neere to him.

⁶ This doe therefore, Take you censers, both Korah, and all his companie,

⁷ And put fire therein, and put incense in the before the Lord to morowe: and the man whome the Lord doeth chuse, the same shalbe holie: ye take too much vpon you, ye sonnes of Leui.

⁸ Againe Moses saide vnto Korah, Heare, I pray you, ye sonnes of Leui.

⁹ Seemeth it a small thing vnto you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the multitude of Israel, to take you neere to himselfe, to doe the seruice of the Tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the Congregation and to minister vnto them?

¹⁰ He hath also taken thee to him, and all thy brethren the sonnes of Leui with thee, and seeke ye the office of the Priest also?

¹¹ For which cause, thou, and all thy companie are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmure against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan, and Abiram the sonnes of Eliab: who answered, We will not come vp.

¹³ Is it a small thing that thou hast brought vs out of a lande that floweth with milke and honie, to kill vs in the wildernesse, except thou make thy selfe lord and ruler ouer vs also?

¹⁴ Also thou hast not brought vs vnto a land that floweth with milke and honie, neither giuen vs inheritance of fieldes and vineyardes: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come vp.

¹⁵ Then Moses waxed verie angry, and saide vnto the Lord, Looke not vnto their offring: I haue not taken so much as an asse from them, neither haue I hurt any of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said vnto Korah, Bee thou and al thy companie before the Lord: both thou, they, and Aaron to morowe:

¹⁷ And take euery man his censor, and put incense in them, and bring ye euery man his censor before the Lord, two hundreth and fiftie censors: thou also and Aaron, euery one his censor.

¹⁸ So they tooke euery man his censor, and put fire in them, and laide incense thereon, and stoode in the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah gathered all the multitude against them vnto the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation: then the glorie of the Lord appeared vnto all the Congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spake vnto Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate your selues from among this Cogregation, that I may consume them at once.

²² And they fell vpon their faces and saide, O God the God of the spirits, of all fleshe, hath not one man onely sinned, and wilt thou bee wroth with all the Congregation?

²³ And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speake vnto the Congregation and say, Get you away from about the Tabernacle of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.

²⁵ Then Moses rose vp, and went vnto Dathan and Abiram, and the Elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spake vnto the Congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tentes of these wicked men, and touche nothing of theirs, lest ye perish in all their sinnes.

²⁷ So they gate them away from the Tabernacle of Korah, Dathan and Abiram on euerie side: and Dathan, and Abiram came out and stood in the doore of their tentes with their wiues, and their sonnes, and their little children.

²⁸ And Moses saide, Hereby yee shall knowe that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works: for I haue not done them of mine owne minde.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men, the Lord hath not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord make a newe thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallowe them vp with all that they haue, and they goe downe quicke into ye pit, then ye shall vnderstand that these men haue prouoked the Lord.

³¹ And assoone as he had made an ende of speaking all these wordes, euen the ground claue asunder that was vnder them,

³² And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them vp, with their families, and all the men that were with Korah, and all their goods.

³³ So they and all that they had, went down aliue into the pit, and the earth couered them: so they perished from among the Congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel that were about them, fled at the crie of them: for they said, Let vs flee, least the earth swalow vs vp.

³⁵ But there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundreth and fiftie men that offred the incense.

³⁶ And the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

³⁷ Speake vnto Eleazar, the sonne of Aaron the Priest, that he take vp the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire beyond the altar: for they are halowed,

³⁸ The censers, I say, of these sinners, that destroyed themselues: and let them make of them broade plates for a couering of the Altar: for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they shalbe holy, and they shall be a signe vnto the children of Israel.

³⁹ Then Eleazar the Priest tooke the brasen censers, which they, that were burnt, had offred, and made broade plates of them for a couering of the Altar.

⁴⁰ It is a remembrance vnto the children of Israel, that no stranger which is not of the seede of Aaron, come neere to offer incense before the Lord, that he be not like Korah and his company, as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face.

⁵ And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him.

⁶ This do: take you censors, Korah, and all his company;

⁷ and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before the LORD to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.'

⁸ And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi:

¹⁶ And Moses said unto Korah: 'Be thou and all thy congregation before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow;

¹⁷ and take ye every man his fire-pan, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his fire-pan, two hundred and fifty fire-pans; thou also, and Aaron, each his fire-pan.'

¹⁸ And they took every man his fire-pan, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.

²⁰ And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying:

²¹ 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.'

²² And they fell upon their faces, and said: 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with all the congregation?'

²³ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

²⁴ 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.'

²⁷ So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent Me.

³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.'

³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them.

³² And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us up.'

³⁵ And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

³⁶ (17-1) And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

³⁷ (17-2) 'Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy;

³⁸ (17-3) even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar — for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD — that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.'

³⁹ (17-4) And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ (17-5) to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense before the LORD; that he fare not as Korah, and as his company; as the LORD spoke unto him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

⁵ and he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the Lord will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.

⁶ This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

⁷ and put fire therein, and put incense in them before the Lord to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the Lord doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:

⁹ seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?

¹⁰ And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?

¹¹ For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:

¹³ is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?

¹⁴ Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

¹⁵ And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the Lord, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow:

¹⁷ and take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.

³⁸ The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:

⁴⁰ to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the Lord; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

⁵ And he spoke unto Korach and unto all his company, saying, Tomorrow,—then will the Lord make known who is his, and who is holy, that he may cause them to come near unto him; and him whom he shall choose will he cause to come near unto him.

⁶ This do ye: Take yourselves censers, Korach and all his company;

⁷ And put therein fire, and put upon them incense before the Lord, tomorrow; and it shall be that the man whom the Lord will choose, he shall be the holy one; you assume too much, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said unto Korach, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:

⁹ It is too little for you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near unto himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister for them?

¹⁰ And he hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and now will ye seek the priesthood also?

¹¹ For which cause beware, thou and all thy company that are gathered together against the Lord; for Aaron, what is he, that ye should murmur against him:

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, We will not come up:

¹³ Is it too little that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that thou wilt assume to make thyself also a prince over us?

¹⁴ Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and thou hast not given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou bore out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

¹⁵ And this displeased Moses greatly, and he said unto the Lord, Have no respect unto their offering: I have not taken away an ass of any one of them, nor have I done wrong to any one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said unto Korach, Thou and all thy company, be ye before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow:

¹⁷ And take ye every man his censer, and put incense upon them, and bring ye near before the Lord every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each his censer.

¹⁸ And they took every man his censer, and put fire on them, and laid incense thereupon; and they stood at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.—

¹⁹ And Korach assembled against them all the congregation unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and the glory of the Lord then appeared unto all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, and I will make an end of them in a moment.

²² And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, this one man doth sin, and with all the congregation wouldst thou be wroth!

²³ And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you away from about the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and there went after him the elders of Israel.

²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing which belongeth to them, lest ye be destroyed through all their sins.

²⁷ So they got away from the dwelling of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, standing boldly at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ And Moses said, Through this shall ye know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these deeds; that I have not done them out of my own heart.

²⁹ If these men die as all men die, and if the visitation of all men be visited on them: then hath the Lord not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord do create a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertaineth unto them, and they go down alive into the pit: then shall ye understand that these men have provoked the Lord.

³¹ And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground that was under them was cloven asunder:

³² And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korach, and all their goods.

³³ And they went down, they, and all they that appertained to them, alive into the pit; and the earth closed over them, and they disappeared from the midst of the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at their cry; for they said, Perhaps the earth may swallow us up also.

³⁵ And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that had offered the incense.

³⁶ (17:1) And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

³⁷ (17:2) Speak unto Elazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he lift up the censers out of the burning, and throw out the fire far away; for they have been hallowed:

³⁸ (17:3) The censers of these sinners against their own lives; and they shall make of them broad plates for a covering for the altar; for they brought them near before the Lord, and they have thus become hallowed; and they shall serve for a sign unto the children of Israel.

³⁹ (17:4) And Elazar the priest took the copper censers, which they that were burnt had brought near; and they beat them out for a covering unto the altar:

⁴⁰ (17:5) As a memorial unto the children of Israel, in order that no stranger, who is not of the seed of Aaron, should come near to burn incense before the Lord; that he become not as Korach, and as his company; as the Lord had spoken to him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ And when Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

⁵ And he spoke to Korah and all his assembly, saying, God has visited and known those that are his and who are holy, and has brought them to himself; and whom he has chosen for himself, he has brought to himself.

⁶ This do ye: take to yourselves censers, Korah and all his company;

⁷ and put fire on them, and put incense on them before the Lord tomorrow; and it shall come to pass that the man whom the Lord has chosen, he shall be holy: let it be enough for you, ye sons of Levi.

⁸ And Moses said to Korah, Hearken to me, ye sons of Levi.

⁹ Is it a little thing for you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, and brought you near to himself to minister in the services of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the tabernacle to minister for them?

¹⁰ and he has brought thee near and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee, and do ye seek to be priests also?

¹¹ Thus it is with thee and all thy congregation which is gathered together against God: and who is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

¹² And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab; and they said, We will not go up.

¹³ Is it a little thing that thou hast brought us up to a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, and that thou altogether rulest over us?

¹⁴ Thou art a prince, and hast thou brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and hast thou given us an inheritance of land and vineyards? wouldest thou have put out the eyes of those men? we will not go up.

¹⁵ And Moses was exceedingly indignant, and said to the Lord, Do thou take no heed to their sacrifice: I have not taken away the desire of any one of them, neither have I hurt any one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, Sanctify thy company, and be ready before the Lord, thou and Aaron and they, tomorrow.

¹⁷ And take each man his censer, and ye shall put incense upon them, and shall bring each one his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers, and thou and Aaron shall bring each his censer.

¹⁸ And each man took his censer, and they put on them fire, and laid incense on them; and Moses and Aaron stood by the doors of the tabernacle of witness.

¹⁹ And Korah raised up against them all his company by the door of the tabernacle of witness; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

²¹ Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, and I will consume them at once.

²² And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, the God of spirits and of all flesh, if one man has sinned, shall the wrath of the Lord be upon the whole congregation?

²³ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ Speak to the congregation, saying, Depart from the company of Korah round about.

²⁵ And Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and all the elders of Israel went with him.

²⁶ And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves from the tents of these stubborn men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest ye be consumed with them in all their sin.

²⁷ And they stood aloof from the tent of Korah round about; and Dathan and Abiram went forth and stood by the doors of their tents, and their wives and their children and their store.

²⁸ And Moses said, Hereby shall ye know that the Lord has sent me to perform all these works, that I have not done them of myself.

²⁹ If these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord shall show by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.

³¹ And when he ceased speaking all these words, the ground clove asunder beneath them.

³² And the ground opened, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that were with Korah, and their cattle.

³³ And they went down and all that they had, alive into Hades; and the ground covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel round about them fled from the sound of them, for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

³⁵ And fire went forth from the Lord, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

⁴ And Mosheh heard, and fell upon his face.

⁵ And he spake with Korach, and with all the congregation, saying: In the morning the Lord will make blown who it is who pertaineth to Him, and who bath been consecrated to approach to His presence; and whosoever He shall appoint shall go near unto His service.

⁶ This do: Take you censers, Korach and all his congregation;

⁷ And put fire in them, and put sweet incense upon it before the Lord tomorrow: and the man whom the Lord will choose, he shall be holy. You have too much, sons of Levi.

⁸ And Mosheh said to Korach, Hear now, sons of Levi:

⁹ Is it a little thing with you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel to bring you near before Him to perform the service of the Lord’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?

¹⁰ But He hath brought thee nigh, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek you now the High Priesthood also?

¹¹ Therefore thou and all thy company have gathered together against the Lord. And Aharon, what is he, that you murmur against him?

¹² And Mosheh, sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, We will not come up.

¹³ Is it a trifle that thou hast brought us from a land making milk and honey to kill us in the desert, that thou mayest domineer and rule over us?

¹⁴ Neither hast thou brought us into the land that maketh milk and honey, to give us an inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou blind the eyes of these men? We will not come up.

¹⁵ And Mosheh was greatly angered, and said before the Lord, Receive not Thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I injured one of them.

¹⁶ And Mosheh said to Korach, Be thou and all thy company prepared before the Lord, thou and they and Aharon tomorrow.

¹⁷ And take every man his censer, and put sweet incense upon them, each man to offer before the Lord (with) his censer.

¹⁸ And they took every man his censer, and set fire in it, and put sweet incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tabernacle of ordinance, with Mosheh and Aharon.

¹⁹ And Korach assembled with him all the company at the door of the tabernacle of ordinance. And the glory of the Lord was revealed to all the congregation.

²⁰ And the Lord spake with Mosheh and to Aharon, saying:

²¹ Separate yourselves from among this company, and I will consume them at once.

²² But they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and thou be wroth with all the congregation?

²³ And the Lord spake with Mosheh, saying:

²⁴ Speak with the congregation, saying: Get you up from among the tents of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Mosheh arose and went unto Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spake with the congregation, saying: Remove now from the tents of these guilty men, and touch not anything that is theirs, lest you be stricken with all their sins.

²⁷ And they gat up from the tents of Korach, Dathan, and Abiram round about; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their families.

²⁸ And Mosheh said: By this shall you know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works, because (I do them) not of my own will:

²⁹ If these men die the death of all men, and the visitation of all men be visited upon them, the Lord hath not sent me.

³⁰ But if the Lord create a creation, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, and all that is theirs, and they go down alive into Sheul, then you will know that these men have caused anger before the Lord.

³¹ And it was, when he had finished to speak all these words, that the ground under them clave asunder,

³² and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and the men of their houses; and all the men of Korach, and all their substance,

³³ they, and all who were theirs, went down alive into Sheul; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel who stood round about them fled from their cry; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us.

³⁵ And fire came out from before the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who had offered the sweet incense.

⁴ When Moses Drawn out sh'ma ·heard obeyed· it, he fell on his face.

⁵ He said to Korach Bald one, Frost and to all his company, “In the morning, Adonai will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him. Even him whom he shall choose, he will cause to come near to him.

⁶ Do this: take censers, Korach Bald one, Frost, and all his company;

⁷ and put fire in them, and put incense on them before Adonai tomorrow. It shall be that the man whom Adonai chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi United with!”

⁸ Moses Drawn out said to Korach Bald one, Frost, “Sh'ma ·Hear obey· now, you sons of Levi United with!

⁹ Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel God prevails has separated you from the congregation of Israel God prevails, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of Adonai ’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;

¹⁰ and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi United with with you? Do you seek the priesthood also?

¹¹ Therefore you and all your company have gathered together against Adonai ! What is Aaron Light-bringer that you murmur against him?”

¹² Moses Drawn out sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, “We won’t come up!

¹³ Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us? (2)

¹⁴ Moreover you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We won’t come up.”

¹⁵ Moses Drawn out was very angry, and said to Adonai , “Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them.”

¹⁶ Moses Drawn out said to Korach Bald one, Frost, “You and all your company go before Adonai , you, and they, and Aaron Light-bringer, tomorrow.

¹⁷ Each man take his censer, and put incense on them, and each man bring before Adonai his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron Light-bringer, each his censer.”

¹⁸ They each took his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses Drawn out and Aaron Light-bringer.

¹⁹ Korach Bald one, Frost assembled all the congregation opposite them to the door of the Tent of Meeting. The kavod Yahweh ·weighty glory of He sustains breathing· appeared to all the congregation. (3)

²⁰ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out and to Aaron Light-bringer, saying,

²¹ “Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!”

²² They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”

²³ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out, saying,

²⁴ “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get away from around the tent of Korach Bald one, Frost, Dathan, and Abiram!’”

²⁵ Moses Drawn out rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel God prevails followed him.

²⁶ He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”

²⁷ So they went away from the tent of Korach Bald one, Frost, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ Moses Drawn out said, “By this you shall know that Adonai has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then Adonai has not sent me.

³⁰ But if Adonai makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol ·Place of the dead·; then you shall understand that these men have despised Adonai .”

³¹ As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split apart.

³² The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, all of Korach Bald one, Frost’s men, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol ·Place of the dead·. The earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³⁴ All Israel God prevails that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

³⁵ Fire came out from Adonai , and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.

³⁶ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out, saying,

³⁷ “Speak to Eleazar Help of God the son of Aaron Light-bringer the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire away from the camp; for they are holy,

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own lives. Let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before Adonai . Therefore they are holy. They shall be a sign to the children of Israel God prevails.”

³⁹ Eleazar Help of God the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial to the children of Israel God prevails, to the end that no stranger, who is not of the offspring of Aaron Light-bringer, would come near to burn incense before Adonai , that he be not as Korach Bald one, Frost, and as his company; as Adonai spoke to him by Moses Drawn out.

⁴ When Moses heard that, he lay facedown.

⁵ He spoke to Korah and to all those with him, “In the morning Yahweh will make known who belongs to him and who is set apart to him. He will bring that person near to him. The one he chooses he will bring near to himself.

⁶ Do this, Korah and all your group. Take censers

⁷ tomorrow and put fire and incense in them before Yahweh. The one whom Yahweh chooses, that man will be set apart to Yahweh. You have gone too far, you descendants of Levi.”

⁸ Again, Moses said to Korah, “Now listen, you descendants of Levi:

⁹ is it a small thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the community of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do work in Yahweh's tabernacle, and to stand before the community to serve them?

¹⁰ He has brought you near, and all your kinfolk, the descendants of Levi, with you, yet you are seeking the priesthood also!

¹¹ That is why you and all your group have gathered together against Yahweh. So why are you complaining about Aaron, who obeys Yahweh?”

¹² Then Moses called for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come up.

¹³ Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness? Now you want to make yourself ruler over us!

¹⁴ In addition, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, or given us the fields and vineyards as an inheritance. Now do you want to blind us with empty promises? We will not come to you.”

¹⁵ Moses was very angry and said to Yahweh, “Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, and I have not harmed any of them.”

¹⁶ Then Moses said to Korah, “Tomorrow you and all your company must go before Yahweh—you and they, and Aaron.

¹⁷ Each of you must take his censer and put incense in it. Then each man must bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred and fifty censers. You and Aaron, also, must each bring your censer.”

¹⁸ So every man took his censer, put fire in it, laid incense in it, and stood at the entrance to the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ Korah assembled all the community against Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting, and Yahweh's glory appeared to all the community.

²⁰ Then Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron:

²¹ “Separate yourselves from among this community that I may consume them immediately.”

²² Moses and Aaron lay facedown and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all humanity, if one man sins, must you be angry with all the community?”

²³ Yahweh replied to Moses. He said,

²⁴ “Speak to the community. Say, 'Get away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'”

²⁵ Then Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ He spoke to the community and said, “Now leave the tents of these wicked men and touch nothing of theirs, or you will be consumed by all their sins.”

²⁷ So the community on every side of the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram left them. Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance to their tents, with their wives, sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ Then Moses said, “By this you will know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works, for I have not done them of my own accord.

²⁹ If these men die a natural death such as normally happens, then Yahweh has not sent me.

³⁰ But if Yahweh creates something new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that they possess, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you must understand that these men have despised Yahweh.”

³¹ As soon as Moses finished speaking all these words, the ground opened under those men.

³² The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their families, and all the people who belonged to Korah, as well as all their possessions.

³³ So they and all that they possessed went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed over them, and they perished from among the community.

³⁴ All Israel around them fled from their cries. They exclaimed, “The earth may swallow us up also!”

³⁵ Then fire flashed out from Yahweh and devoured the 250 men who had offered incense.

³⁶ Again Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,

³⁷ “Speak to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest and let him take up the censers out of the flames, for the censers are set apart to me. Then let him scatter the burning coals at a distance.

³⁸ Take the censers of those who lost their lives because of their sin. Let them be made into hammered plates as a covering over the altar. Those men did offer them before me, so they are set apart to me. They will be a sign of my presence to the people of Israel.”

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers that had been used by the men who were burned up, and they were hammered out into a covering for the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a reminder to the people of Israel, so that no outsider who was not descended from Aaron should come up to burn incense before Yahweh, so they might not become like Korah and his group—just as Yahweh had commanded through Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

⁵ He said to Korah and to all his company, “In the morning, Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him. Even him whom he shall choose, he will cause to come near to him.

⁶ Do this: have Korah and all his company take censers,

⁷ put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow. It shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!”

²² They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”

²³ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁵ Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”

²⁷ So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then Yahweh hasn’t sent me.

³⁰ But if Yahweh makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh.”

¹⁵ And Moses was very wroth, and said to the LORD, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow:

¹⁷ And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also and Aaron each of you his censer.

²⁴ Speak to the congregation, saying, Withdraw yourselves from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose up, and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

²⁷ So they withdrew from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

²⁸ And Moses said, by this ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works: for I have not done them of my own mind.

²⁹ If these men shall die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me.

³⁰ But if the LORD shall make a new thing, and the earth shall open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground cleaved asunder that was under them:

³² And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained to Korah, and all their goods.

³³ They, and all that appertained to them went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them, fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also .

³⁵ And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

³⁶ And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

³⁷ Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.

³⁸ The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign to the children of Israel.

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest took the brazen censers, with which they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:

⁴⁰ To be a memorial to the children of Israel, that no stranger, who is not of the seed of Aaron, should come near to offer incense before the LORD; that he may not be as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.

⁴ When Moses heard it, he fell on his face.

²¹ “Separate yourselves from amongst this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!”

²² They fell on their faces, and said, “God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”

²³ The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Get away from around the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram!’”

²⁵ Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ He spoke to the congregation, saying, “Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!”

²⁷ So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side. Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ Moses said, “Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they experience what all men experience, then the LORD hasn’t sent me.

³⁰ But if the LORD makes a new thing, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up with all that belong to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.”

³¹ As he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split apart.

³² The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all of Korah’s men, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol. The earth closed on them, and they perished from amongst the assembly.

³⁴ All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”

³⁵ Fire came out from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men who offered the incense.

³⁶ The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

³⁷ “Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire away from the camp; for they are holy,

³⁸ even the censers of those who sinned against their own lives. Let them be beaten into plates for a covering of the altar, for they offered them before the LORD. Therefore they are holy. They shall be a sign to the children of Israel.”

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which those who were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger who isn’t of the offspring of Aaron, would come near to burn incense before the LORD, that he not be as Korah and as his company; as the LORD spoke to him by Moses.

⁴ And when Moses had heard this, he fell down low upon his face.

⁵ And he spake to Korah, and to all the multitude; he said, Early the Lord shall make known which men pertain to him, and he shall apply, or draw, to him holy men; and they which he hath chosen, shall nigh to him.

⁶ Therefore do ye this thing; each man take his censer, thou Korah, and all thy counsel;

⁷ and tomorrow when fire is taken up, put ye incense above before the Lord, and whomever the Lord chooseth, he shall be holy. Ye sons of Levi be much raised.

⁸ And again Moses said to Korah, Ye sons of Levi, hear.

⁹ Whether it is little to you, that God of Israel hath separated you from all the people, and hath joined you to himself, that ye should serve him in the service of the tabernacle, and that ye should stand before the multitude of the people, and serve him?

¹⁰ Made he therefore thee, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi, to nigh to himself, that ye challenge to you also priesthood,

¹¹ and all thy gathering together stand against the Lord? For why, what is Aaron, that ye grutch against him?

¹² Therefore Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; which answered, We come not.

¹³ Whether is it little to thee, that thou leddest us out of the land that flowed with milk and honey, to slay us in the desert, no but also thou be lord of us?

¹⁴ Verily thou hast brought us into the land that floweth with streams of milk and honey, andthou hast given to us possession of fields, and of vineyards; whether also thou wilt put out our eyes? We come not to thee.

¹⁵ And Moses was wroth greatly, and said to the Lord, Behold thou not the sacrifices of them; thou knowest that I took never of them a little ass, neither I tormented any of them.

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, Thou and all thy congregation stand asides half before the Lord, and Aaron tomorrow by himself.

¹⁷ Take ye all by yourselves your censers, and put ye incense in those, and offer ye to the Lord, twain or two hundred and fifty censers; and Aaron hold he his censer.

¹⁸ And when they had done this, while Moses and Aaron stood there,

¹⁹ and they had gathered all the multitude to the door of the tabernacle against them, the glory of the Lord appeared to all.

²⁰ And the Lord spake to Moses and to Aaron, and said,

²¹ Be ye separated from the midst of this congregation, that I lose them suddenly.

²² The which fell down low upon their faces, and said, Most strong God of the spirits of all flesh, whether thy wrath shall be fierce against all men, for one man sinneth?

²³ And the Lord said to Moses,

²⁴ Command thou to all the people, that it be separated from the tabernacles of Korah, and of Dathan, and of Abiram.

²⁵ And Moses rose, and went to Dathan and Abiram; and while the elder men of Israel followed him,

²⁶ he said to the company, Go ye away from the tabernacles of the wicked men, and do not ye touch those things that pertain to them, lest ye be wrapped in the sins of them.

²⁷ And when they had gone away from their tents by compass, Dathan and Abiram went out, and stood in the entry of their tents, with their wives, and their free children, and with all the multitude.

²⁸ And Moses said, In this ye shall know that the Lord sent me, that I should do all things which ye see, and that I brought them not forth of mine own heart.

²⁹ If they perish by customable death of men, and wound, either pestilence, visit them, by which also other men be wont to be visited, the Lord sent not me;

³⁰ but if the Lord doeth a new thing, that the earth open his mouth, and swallow them, and all things that pertain to them, and they go down quick into hell, ye shall know that they blasphemed the Lord.

³¹ Therefore anon as he ceased to speak, the earth was broken under their feet,

³² and the earth opened his mouth, and devoured them, with their tabernacles, and all their chattel;

³³ and they went down quick, into hell, and were covered with earth, and they perished from the midst of the multitude.

³⁴ And soothly all Israel that stood about, fled from the cry of men perishing, and said, Lest peradventure the earth swallow also us.

³⁵ But also fire went out from the Lord, and killed twain or two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

³⁶ And the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

³⁷ Command thou to Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, that he take, or gather up, the censers that lie in the burning, and that he scatter the fire hither and thither; for those censers be hallowed

³⁸ in the deaths of sinners; and that he bring forth those censers into plates, and nail them to the altar, for incense is offered in those or them to the Lord, and those be hallowed, that the sons of Israel see them for a sign and a memorial.

³⁹ Therefore Eleazar, the priest, took the brazen censers, in which they, which the burning had devoured had offered, and he beat out those censers into plates, and nailed them to the altar;

⁴⁰ that the sons of Israel should have those censers with them afterward, by which they should remember this great vengeance of God, lest any alien, and which is not of the seed of Aaron, nigh to offer incense to the Lord; lest he suffer, as Korah suffered, and all his multitude, while the Lord spake to Moses.

⁴ And when Moses had heard this, he fell down low upon his face (or he fell down on the ground).

⁵ And he spake to Korah, and to all the multitude; he said, Early the Lord shall make known which men pertain to him, and he shall apply, or draw, to him holy men; and they which he hath chosen, shall nigh to him. (And he spoke to Korah, and to all the multitude, and said, Early tomorrow the Lord shall make known which man pertaineth to him, for he shall draw to himself the man who is holy; and he whom he hath chosen, shall be near to him.)

⁶ Therefore do ye this thing; each man take his censer, thou Korah, and all thy counsel; (And so do ye this thing; each man take his censer, thou Korah, and all thy company, or all thy people;)

⁷ and tomorrow when fire is taken up, put ye incense above before the Lord (or and tomorrow put fire in them, and put ye incense on it before the Lord), and whomever the Lord chooseth, he shall be holy. Ye sons of Levi be much raised (up).

⁸ And again Moses said to Korah, Ye sons of Levi, hear.

⁹ Whether it is little to you (or Is it such a small thing for you), that (the) God of Israel hath separated you from all the people, and hath joined you to himself, (so) that ye should serve him in the service of the tabernacle, and that ye should stand before the multitude of the people, and serve him, (yea, serve Almighty God)?

¹⁰ Made he therefore thee, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi (with thee), to nigh to himself, that ye challenge to you also (the) priesthood, (Yea, he made thee, and all thy brothers, or thy kinsmen, the Levites, with thee, just for that, to be near him; but now ye seek the priesthood for yourselves as well,)

¹¹ and (for that), all thy gathering together stand against the Lord? For why, what is Aaron, that ye grouch against him? (and for that, all thy company now stand against the Lord! For what is Aaron, that ye should grumble against him?)

¹² Therefore Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; which answered, We come not. (And so Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they answered, We shall not come to thee.)

¹³ Whether is it little to thee, that thou leddest us out of the land that flowed with milk and honey, to slay us in the desert, no but also thou be lord of us? (Is it such a small thing for thee, that thou leddest us out of the land of Egypt which flowed with milk and honey, to kill us here in the wilderness, but must thou also be our lord and master?)

¹⁴ Verily thou hast brought us into the land that floweth with streams of milk and honey, and thou hast given to us possession of fields, and of vineyards; whether also thou wilt put out our eyes? We come not to thee (or We shall not come to thee).

¹⁵ And Moses was wroth greatly, and said to the Lord, Behold thou not the sacrifices of them; thou knowest that I took never of them a little ass, neither I tormented any of them. (And Moses was greatly angered, and said to the Lord, Do not thou receive any of their offerings, Lord; for thou knowest that I never took a solitary donkey from them, nor did I torment any of them.)

¹⁶ And Moses said to Korah, Thou and all thy congregation stand asides half before the Lord, and Aaron tomorrow by himself. (And Moses said to Korah, Tomorrow, thou, and all thy company, or all thy people, come and stand here before the Lord, and also Aaron, by himself.)

¹⁷ Take ye all by yourselves your censers, and put ye incense in those, (or All of you shall take your censers, and put ye incense in them), and offer ye to the Lord, twain hundred and fifty censers; and Aaron hold he his censer (also).

¹⁸ And (so the next day) when they had done this, while Moses and Aaron stood there,

¹⁹ and they had gathered all the multitude to the door of the tabernacle against them, the glory of the Lord appeared to all. (and Korah had gathered all the multitude against them at the entrance to the Tabernacle, the glory of the Lord appeared to all of them.)

²⁰ And the Lord spake to Moses and to Aaron, and said,

²¹ Be ye separated from the midst of this congregation, that I lose them suddenly. (Be ye set apart from the midst of this company, or of these people, so that I can quickly destroy them.)

²² The which fell down low upon their face(s), and said, Most strong God of the spirits of all flesh, whether thy wrath shall be fierce against all men, for one man sinneth?

²³ And the Lord said to Moses,

²⁴ Command thou to all the people, that it be separated from the tabernacles of Korah, and of Dathan, and of Abiram. (Command thou to all the people, that they move away from the tents of Korah, and Dathan, and Abiram.)

²⁵ And Moses rose (up), and went to Dathan and Abiram; and while the elder men of Israel followed him,

²⁶ he said to the company, Go ye away from the tabernacles of the wicked men, and do not ye touch those things that pertain to them, lest ye be wrapped in the sins of them. (he said to the people, Go ye away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not ye touch those things that pertain to them, lest ye be wrapped up in their sins.)

²⁷ And when they had gone away from their tents by compass, Dathan and Abiram went out, and stood in the entry of their tents, with their wives, and their free children, and with all the multitude. (And when they had gone away from their tents all around, Dathan and Abiram went out, and stood at the entrance to their tents, with their wives, and their children, and with all their multitude.)

²⁸ And Moses said, In this ye shall know that the Lord sent me, that I should do all things which ye see, and that I brought them not forth of mine own heart. (And Moses said, By this ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me, to do all these things which ye see, and that I did not bring them forth from my own heart.)

²⁹ If they perish by customable death of men, and wound, either pestilence, visit them, by which also other men be wont to be visited, the Lord sent not me; (If these men die by the customary deaths of people, or if a wound, or a pestilence, visit them, by which other people be wont to be visited, then the Lord did not send me;)

³⁰ but if the Lord doeth a new thing, that the earth open his mouth, and swallow them, and all things that pertain to them, and they go down quick into hell, ye shall know that they blasphemed the Lord. (but if the Lord doeth a new thing, yea, and the earth open its mouth, and swallow them, and all things that pertain to them, and they go down alive into hell, or to Sheol, then ye shall know that they blasphemed against the Lord.)

³² and the earth opened his mouth, and devoured them, with their tabernacles, and all their chattel; (and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them, and their tents, and all their possessions;)

³³ and they went down quick, into hell, and were covered with earth, and they perished from the midst of the multitude. (and they went down alive into hell, or to Sheol, and then they were covered with earth, and so they perished from the midst of the multitude.)

³⁴ And soothly all Israel that stood about, fled from the cry of men perishing, and said, Lest peradventure the earth swallow also us. (And all the Israelites who stood about, fled from the cry of the people as they perished, saying, Lest the earth swallow us as well.)

³⁵ But also fire went out from the Lord, and killed (the) twain hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

³⁶ And the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

³⁷ Command thou to Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, that he take, or gather up, the censers that lie in the burning, and that he scatter the fire hither and thither; for those censers be hallowed (or for those censers be holy)

³⁸ in the deaths of (these) sinners; and that he bring forth those censers into plates, and nail them to the altar, for incense is offered in those to the Lord, and those be hallowed, that the sons of Israel see them for a sign and a memorial. (even without the deaths of these sinners; and that he make those censers into plates, and then nail them to the altar, for incense was offered in them to the Lord, and so they be holy; and then the Israelites shall see them as a sign and as a reminder.)

³⁹ Therefore Eleazar, the priest, took the brazen censers, in which they, which the burning had devoured had offered, and he beat out those censers into plates, and nailed them to the altar; (And so Eleazar, the priest, took the bronze censers, with which they, whom the burning had devoured, had made an offering to the Lord, and he beat those censers into plates, and then nailed them to the altar;)

⁴⁰ that the sons of Israel should have those censers with them afterward, by which they should remember this great vengeance of God, lest any alien, and which is not of the seed of Aaron, nigh to offer incense to the Lord; lest he suffer, as Korah suffered, and all his multitude, while the Lord spake to Moses. (so that the Israelites would have those censers with them afterward, by which they would remember this great vengeance of God, lest any stranger, who is not of Aaron’s descendants, come near to offer incense to the Lord; for then he would suffer, like Korah and all his fellows had suffered; all of this was done as the Lord commanded to Eleazar, through Moses.)

⁴ And whanne Moises hadde herd this, he felde lowe on the face.

⁵ And he spak to Chore, and to al the multitude; he seide, Eerli the Lord schal make knowun whiche perteynen to hym, and he schal applie to hym hooli men; and thei whiche he hath chose, schulen neiye to hym.

⁶ Therfor do ye this thing; ech man take his cencere, thou Chore, and al thi counsel;

⁷ and to morewe whanne fier is takun vp, putte ye encense aboue bifor the Lord, and whom euer the Lord chesith, he schal be hooli. Ye sones of Leuy ben myche reisid.

⁸ And eft Moises seide to Chore, Ye sones of Leuy, here.

⁹ Whether it is litil to you, that God of Israel departide you fro al the puple, and ioynede you to hym silf, that ye schulden serue hym in the seruyce of tabernacle, and that ye schulden stonde bifor the multitude of puple, and schulden serue hym?

¹⁰ Made he therfor thee and alle thi bretheren the sones of Leuy to neiy to hym silf, that ye chalenge to you also preesthod,

¹¹ and al thi gaderyng togidere stonde ayens the Lord? For whi what is Aaron, that ye grutchen ayens hym?

¹² Therfor Moises sente to clepe Dathan and Abiron, the sones of Heliab; whiche answeriden, We comen not.

¹³ Whethir is it litil to thee, that thou leddist vs out of the lond that flowide with mylk and hony, to sle vs in the deseert, no but also thou be lord of vs?

¹⁴ Verili thou hast bronyt vs in to the lond that flowith with streemys of mylk and hony, and hast youe to vs possessioun of feeldis, and of vyneris; whethir also thou wolt putte out oure iyen?

¹⁵ We comen not. And Moises was wrooth greetli, and seide to the Lord, Biholde thou not the sacrifices of hem; thou wost that Y took neuere of hem, yhe, a litil asse, nethir Y turmentide ony of hem.

¹⁶ And Moises seide to Chore, Thou and al thi congregacioun stonde asidis half bifor the Lord, and Aaron to morewe bi hym silf.

¹⁷ Take ye alle bi you silf youre censeris, and putte ye encense in tho, and offre ye to the Lord, tweyn hundrid and fifti censeris; and Aaron holde his censer.

¹⁸ And whanne thei hadden do this, while Moises and Aaron stoden,

¹⁹ and thei hadden gaderid al the multitude to the `dore of the tabernacle ayens hem, the glorie of the Lord apperide to alle.

²⁰ And the Lord spak to Moises and Aaron,

²¹ and seide, Be ye departid fro the myddis of this congregacioun, that Y leese hem sodeynli.

²² Whiche felden lowe on the face, and seiden, Strongeste God of the spiritis of al fleisch, whethir `thin yre schal be fers ayens alle men, for o man synneth?

²³ And the Lord seide to Moises,

²⁴ Comaunde thou to al the puple, that it be departid fro the tabernaclis of Chore, and of Dathan, and of Abiron.

²⁵ And Moises roos, and yede to Dathan and Abiron; and while the eldre men of Israel sueden hym,

²⁶ he seide to the cumpeny, Go ye awey fro the tabernaclis of wickid men, and nyle ye touche tho thingis that parteynen to hem, lest ye ben wlappid in the synnes of hem.

²⁷ And whanne thei hadden gon awei fro the tentis `of hem bi the cumpas, Dathan and Abiron yeden out, and stoden in the entryng of her tentis, with wyues, and fre children, and al the multitude.

²⁸ And Moises seide, In this ye schulen wite that the Lord sente me, that Y schulde do alle thingis whiche ye seen, and Y brouyte not forth tho of myn owne herte.

²⁹ If thei perischen bi customable deeth of men, and wounde visite hem, bi which also othere men ben wont to be visitid,

³⁰ the Lord sente not me; but if the Lord doith a newe thing, that the erthe opene his mouth, and swolewe hem, and alle thingis that perteynen to hem, and thei goen doun quyke in to helle, ye schulen wite that thei blasfemeden the Lord.

³¹ Therfor anoon as he cesside to speke, the erthe was brokun vndur her feet,

³² and the erthe openyde his mouth, and deuowride hem, with her tabernaclis, and al the catel `of hem;

³³ and thei yeden doun quike in to helle, and weren hilid with erthe, and perischiden fro the myddis of the multitude.

³⁴ And sotheli al Israel that stood bi the cumpas, fledde fro the cry of men perischinge, and seide, Lest perauenture the erthe swolewe also vs.

³⁵ But also fier yede out fro the Lord, and killide tweyn hundrid and fifti men that offriden encense.

³⁶ And the Lord spak to Moises, and seide,

³⁷ Comaunde thou to Eleasar, sone of Aaron, preest, that he take the censeris that liggen in the brennyng, and that he schatere the fier hidur and thidur; for tho ben halewid in the dethis of synneris;

³⁸ and that he bringe forth tho in to platis, and naile to the auter, for encense is offrid in tho to the Lord, and tho ben halewid, that the sonis of Israel se tho for a signe and memorial.

³⁹ Therfor Eleazar, preest, took the brasun senseris, in whiche censeris thei whiche the brennyng deuouride hadden offrid, and he `brouyt forth tho in to platis, and nailide to the auter;

⁴⁰ that the sones of Israel schulden haue thingis aftirward, bi whiche thei schulden remembre, lest ony alien, and which is not of the seed of Aaron, neiy to offre encense to the Lord, lest he suffre, as Chore sufferide, and al his multitude, while the Lord spak to Moises.

⁴ And Moses heareth, and falleth on his face,

⁵ and he speaketh unto Korah, and unto all his company, saying, 'Morning! — and Jehovah is knowing those who are his, and him who is holy, and hath brought near unto Him; even him whom He doth fix on He bringeth near unto Him.

⁶ This do: take to yourselves censers, Korah, and all his company,

⁷ and put in them fire, and put on them perfume, before Jehovah to-morrow, and it hath been, the man whom Jehovah chooseth, he is the holy one; — enough of you, sons of Levi.'

⁸ And Moses saith unto Korah, 'Hear ye, I pray you, sons of Levi;

⁹ is it little to you that the God of Israel hath separated you from the company of Israel to bring you near unto Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Jehovah, and to stand before the company to serve them? —

¹⁰ yea, He doth bring thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee — and ye have sought also the priesthood!

¹¹ Therefore, thou and all thy company who are met are against Jehovah; and Aaron, what is he, that ye murmur against him?'

¹² And Moses sendeth to call for Dathan and for Abiram sons of Eliab, and they say, 'We do not come up;

¹³ is it little that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to put us to death in a wilderness that thou also certainly makest thyself prince over us?

¹⁴ Yea, unto a land flowing with milk and honey thou hast not brought us in, nor dost thou give to us an inheritance of field and vineyard; the eyes of these men dost thou pick out? we do not come up.'

¹⁵ And it is very displeasing to Moses, and he saith unto Jehovah, 'Turn not Thou unto their present; not one ass from them have I taken, nor have I afflicted one of them.'

¹⁶ And Moses saith unto Korah, 'Thou and all thy company, be ye before Jehovah, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow;

¹⁷ and take ye each his censer, and ye have put on them perfume, and brought near before Jehovah, each his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; and thou and Aaron, each his censer.'

¹⁸ And they take each his censer, and put on them fire, and lay on them perfume, and they stand at the opening of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ And Korah assembleth against them all the company unto the opening of the tent of meeting, and the honour of Jehovah is seen by all the company.

²⁰ And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

²¹ 'Be ye separated from the midst of this company, and I consume them in a moment;'

²² and they fall on their faces, and say, 'God, God of the spirits of all flesh — the one man sinneth, and against all the company Thou art wroth!'

²³ And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

²⁴ 'Speak unto the company, saying, Go ye up from round about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'

²⁵ And Moses riseth, and goeth unto Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel go after him,

²⁶ and he speaketh unto the company, saying, 'Turn aside, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and come not against anything that they have, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.'

²⁷ And they go up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan and Abiram, from round about, and Dathan, and Abiram have come out, standing at the opening of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their infants.

²⁸ And Moses saith, 'By this ye do know that Jehovah hath sent me to do all these works, that they are not from my own heart;

²⁹ if according to the death of all men these die — or the charge of all men is charged upon them — Jehovah hath not sent me;

³⁰ and if a strange thing Jehovah do, and the ground hath opened her mouth and swallowed them, and all that they have, and they have gone down alive to Sheol — then ye have known that these men have despised Jehovah.'

³¹ And it cometh to pass at his finishing speaking all these words, that the ground which is under them cleaveth,

³² and the earth openeth her mouth, and swalloweth them, and their houses, and all the men who are for Korah, and all the goods,

³³ and they go down, they, and all that they have, alive to Sheol, and the earth closeth over them, and they perish from the midst of the assembly;

³⁴ and all Israel who are round about them have fled at their voice, for they said, 'Lest the earth swallow us;'

³⁵ and fire hath come out from Jehovah, and consumeth the two hundred and fifty men bringing near the perfume.

³⁶ And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

³⁷ 'Say unto Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, and he lifteth up the censers from the midst of the burning, and the fire scatter thou yonder, for they have been hallowed,

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own souls; and they have made them spread-out plates, a covering for the altar, for they have brought them near before Jehovah, and they are hallowed; and they are become a sign to the sons of Israel.'

³⁹ And Eleazar the priest taketh the brazen censers which they who are burnt had brought near, and they spread them out, a covering for the altar —

⁴⁰ a memorial to the sons of Israel, so that a stranger who is not of the seed of Aaron doth not draw near to make a perfume before Jehovah, and is not as Korah, and as his company, — as Jehovah hath spoken by the hand of Moses to him.
