Luke 24:17-30 in English

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

¹⁹ And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.

²² Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;

²³ and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

²⁵ And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.

²⁹ And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking it he gave to them.

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

¹⁹ And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

²⁰ And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

²² Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

²⁴ And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

²⁵ Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

²⁶ Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

¹⁷ Jesus said to them, “What have you two been talking about while you were walking?” They stopped, and their faces looked very sad.

¹⁸ One of them, whose name was Cleopas, said, “◄You (sg) must be the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days!/Are you the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days?► RHQ”

¹⁹ He said to them, “What events?” They replied, “ The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth, who was a prophet. Many people saw him perform great miracles, and God enabled him to teach wonderful messages!

²⁰ But our chief priests and leaders handed him over to the Roman authorities. The authorities sentenced him to die, and they killed him by nailing him to a cross.

²¹ We (exc) were hoping that he was the one who would free us Israelites from our enemies But this does not seem possible now, because three days have already passed since that happened.

²² On the other hand, some women from our group amazed us. Early this morning they went to the tomb,

²³ but Jesus' body was not there! They came back and said that they had seen some angels in a vision. The angels said that he was alive!

²⁴ Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb. They saw that things were exactly as the women had reported. But they did not see Jesus.”

²⁵ He said to them, “ You two foolish men! You are so slow to believe all that the prophets have written about the Messiah!

²⁶ ◄ You should certainly have known that it was necessary that the Messiah should suffer all those things and die, and then enter his glorious home in heaven!/Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer all those things and die, and then enter his glorious home in heaven?► RHQ”

²⁷ Then he explained to them all the things that the prophets had written in the Scriptures about himself. He started with what Moses MTY wrote and then explained to them what all the other prophets wrote.

²⁸ They came near to the village to which the two men were going. Jesus indicated that he would go further,

²⁹ but they urged him to not do that. They said, “Stay with us tonight, because it is late in the afternoon and it will soon be dark.” So he went in the house to stay with them.

³⁰ When they sat down to eat, he took some bread and asked God to bless it. He broke it and gave some pieces to them.

¹⁷ He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ He said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

¹⁸ Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time?

¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people:

²⁰ And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross.

²¹ But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place;

²² And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put,

²³ And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living.

²⁴ And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see.

²⁵ And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said.

²⁶ Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory?

²⁷ And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself.

²⁸ And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on;

²⁹ But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them.

³⁰ And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What discourses are these which pass between you as ye walk, and are downcast?

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said to him, Thou sojournest alone in Jerusalem, and dost not know what has taken place in it in these days?

¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazaraean, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to the judgment of death and crucified him.

²¹ But we had hoped that he was the one who is about to redeem Israel. But then, besides all these things, it is now, to-day, the third day since these things took place.

²² And withal, certain women from amongst us astonished us, having been very early at the sepulchre,

²³ and, not having found his body, came, saying that they also had seen a vision of angels, who say that he is living.

²⁴ And some of those with us went to the sepulchre, and found it so, as the women also had said, but him they saw not.

²⁵ And he said to them, O senseless and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ And they drew near to the village where they were going, and he made as though he would go farther.

²⁹ And they constrained him, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is declining. And he entered in to stay with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass as he was at table with them, having taken the bread, he blessed, and having broken it, gave it to them.

¹⁷ And he said to them: What are these discourses that you hold one with another as you walk, and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?

¹⁹ To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, today is the third day since these things were done.

²² Yea and certain women also of our company affrighted us, who before it was light, were at the sepulchre,

²³ And not finding his body, came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who say that he is alive.

²⁴ And some of our people went to the sepulchre, and found it so as the women had said, but him they found not.

²⁵ Then he said to them: O foolish, and slow of heart to believe in all things which the prophets have spoken.

²⁶ Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into his glory?

³⁰ And it came to pass, whilst he was at table with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and gave to them.

¹⁷ And He said to them, “What are these words which you are exchanging with one another as you walk, and you have a gloomy look?”

¹⁸ Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and do not know what has happened in it in these days?”

¹⁹ And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a man who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified Him.

²¹ But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

²² Moreover certain women of our group astonished us, after they arrived early at the tomb.

²³ And not finding His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.

²⁴ And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

¹⁷ So He said to them, “What words are these that you are exchanging with one another as you walk, and are gloomy?”

¹⁸ Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are you the only one living in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him: “The things concerning Jesus the Natsorean, how the man was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.

²¹ And we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel! Further, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.

²² Moreover certain women of our group astonished us—arriving early at the tomb,

²³ and not finding his body, they came saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.

²⁴ And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see.”

²⁵ Then He said to them: “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the Prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Was it really not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into His glory?”

²⁹ But they constrained Him, saying, “Stay with us, because it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” So He went in to stay with them.

³⁰ And then, as He was reclining with them, He took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

¹⁷ “What are you discussing as you walk along?” he asked them. They stopped, their faces sad.

¹⁸ One of them, called Cleopas, replied, “Are you just visiting Jerusalem? You must be the only person who doesn't know the things that have happened in the past few days.”

¹⁹ “What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet who spoke powerfully and performed great miracles before God and all the people.

²⁰ But our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.

²¹ We had hoped he was the one who was going to rescue Israel. It's been three days now since all this happened.

²² But then some of the women in our group surprised us.

²³ At dawn they went to the tomb and they didn't find his body. They came back saying that they'd seen a vision of angels who told them he's alive.

²⁴ Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women said—but they didn't see him.”

²⁵ Jesus told them, “You're so dull! How slow you are to trust in all that the prophets said!

²⁶ Didn't the Messiah have to suffer before he could enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Then, starting with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them everything that was said in Scripture about himself.

²⁸ As they approached the village they were going to, Jesus made it seem as if he was going farther.

²⁹ But they urged him, saying, “Please come and stay with us. It's getting late—the day is almost over.” So he went to stay with them.

³⁰ When he sat down to eat with them, he took the bread and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.

¹⁷ And he sayd vnto them, What maner of communications are these that ye haue one to another as ye walke and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one (named Cleopas) answered, and sayd vnto him, Art thou onely a stranger in Hierusalem, and hast not knowen the things which are come to passe therein in these dayes?

¹⁹ And he said vnto them, What things? And they sayd vnto him, Of Iesus of Nazareth, which was a Prophet, mightie in deede and in word before God, and all people,

²⁰ And howe the hie Priests, and our rulers deliuered him to be condemned to death, and haue crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it had bene he that should haue deliuered Israel, and as touching all these things, to day is ye third day, that they were done.

²² Yea, and certaine women among vs made vs astonied, which came early vnto the sepulchre.

²³ And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seene a vision of Angels, which sayd, that he was aliue.

²⁴ Therefore certaine of them which were with vs, went to the sepulchre, and found it euen so as the women had sayd, but him they saw not.

²⁵ Then he sayd vnto them, O fooles and slowe of heart to beleeue all that the Prophets haue spoken!

²⁶ Ought not Christ to haue suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

²² And furthermore certain women of our company have amazed us; for going early to the tomb,

²³ they did not find his body, and came, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ And some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it to be as the women had said; but him they saw not.

²⁵ And he said to them, O dull of apprehension, and slow of heart to believe all that the Prophets have spoken!

³⁰ And it came to pass, as he was at table with them, that he took the bread, and blessed it, and broke and gave it to them.

¹⁷ “What is this that you are saying to each other as you walk along?” Jesus asked. They stopped, with sad looks on their faces,

¹⁸ and then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to Jesus, “Are you staying by yourself at Jerusalem, that you have not heard of the things that have happened there within the last few days?”

¹⁹ “What things do you mean?” asked Jesus. “Why, about Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered, “who, in the eyes of God and all the people, was a prophet, whose power was felt in both his words and actions;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our leading men gave him up to be sentenced to death, and afterward crucified him.

²¹ But we were hoping that he was the Destined Deliverer of Israel; yes, and besides all this, it is now three days since these things occurred.

²² And what is more, some of the women amongst us have greatly astonished us. They went to the tomb at daybreak

²³ And, not finding the body of Jesus there, came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he was alive.

²⁴ So some of our number went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

²⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “Foolish men, slow to accept all that the prophets have said!

²⁶ Was not the Christ bound to undergo this suffering before entering into his glory?”

²⁷ Then, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them all through the scriptures the passages that referred to himself.

²⁹ but they pressed him not to do so. “Stay with us,” they said, “for it is getting towards evening, and the sun in already low.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.

²¹ But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel God prevails. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

²² Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;

²³ and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

²⁵ He said to them, “Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Didn’t the Messiah Anointed one have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Beginning from Moses Drawn out and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ They came near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

²⁹ They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over. (Finish of Nissan 17, nearing to the start of Nissan 18.)” He went in to stay with them.

³⁰ When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the matzah ·unleavened bread· and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.

¹⁷ then he asked them, “What is this thing you are talking about so much, as you walk along the road?” When they heard him say that they both stopped, and they looked very sad.

¹⁸ Then one of them, called Cleopas, said, “I reckon you are the only visitor to Jerusalem that hasn’t heard about the things that happened here in the last few days.”

¹⁹ Jesus asked him, “What things?” They said, “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth. God gave him the power to tell his messages, and to teach people his words, and to do powerful things. All the people reckoned he was great.

²⁰ But our bosses, and the leaders of our ceremonies, they didn’t want him. They grabbed him and gave him to the Roman soldiers, and told them to kill him, so they nailed him to a cross and he died.

²¹ But, you know, we were hoping he will save us Israel people, but he can’t do that now. And all of that happened 3 days ago.

²² And now, today, some of our women gave us a shock. They went to his grave early this morning, to look for his body,

²³ but they couldn’t find it. His body wasn’t in that grave. They came back and told us they saw some of God’s angel messengers, and those angels said that he is alive.

²⁴ And some of our men went to that grave, and they saw that everything was just like the women said. His body was not in the grave.”

²⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “You 2 are a bit stupid. You don’t properly believe the messages that God’s men told us a long time ago.

²⁶ You see, they told us about the special man God was going to send to us. They made it real clear. They said he will get this kind of trouble, and he will die, but then God will show everyone that he is really great.”

²⁷ Then Jesus told them all the words in God’s book that tell about him. He made it very clear to them. He started with the words that Moses wrote, and he also told them the words that God’s other men wrote.

²⁸ They kept walking along as Jesus talked to them, and they came to Emmaus, the place those 2 men were going to stay. Jesus was starting to keep going on that road,

²⁹ but those 2 said, “Hey, you can’t keep going to another place. It’s too late. The sun is going down. Please stay here with us tonight.” So he went with them to their house.

³⁰ The 3 of them sat down at the table to have a feed, and Jesus picked up some bread and said thank you to God for it, and he broke it into bits and gave it to them.

¹⁷ And he sayde vnto them: What maner of communicacions are these that ye have one to another as ye walke and are sadde.

¹⁸ And the one of them named Cleophas answered and sayd vnto him: arte thou only a straunger in Ierusalem and haste not knowen the thinges which have chaunsed therin in these dayes?

¹⁹ To whom he sayd: what thinges? And they sayd vnto him: of Iesus of Nazareth which was a Prophet myghtie in dede and worde before god and all the people.

²⁰ And how the hye prestes and oure rulers delyvered him to be condempned to deeth: and have crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it shuld have bene he that shuld have delyvered Israel. And as touchynge all these thinges to daye is even the thyrd daye that they were done.

²² Ye and certayne wemen also of oure company made vs astonyed which came erly vnto the sepulcre,

²³ and founde not his boddy: and came sayinge that they had sene a vision of angels which sayde that he was alyve.

²⁴ And certayne of them which were with vs went their waye to the sepulcre and founde it even so as the wemen had sayde: but him they sawe not.

²⁵ And he sayde vnto the: O foles and slowe of herte to beleve all that the prophetes have spoken.

²⁶ Ought not Christ to have suffred these thinges and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And he began at Moses and at all the prophetes and interpreted vnto them in all scriptures which were wrytten of him.

²⁸ And they drue neye vnto the toune wich they went to. And he made as though he wolde have gone further.

²⁹ But they constrayned him sayinge: abyde with vs for it draweth towardes nyght and the daye is farre passed. And he went in to tary with them.

³⁰ And it came to passe as he sate at meate with them he toke breed blessed it brake and gave to them.

¹⁷ Jesus said to them, “What are the two of you talking about as you walk?” They stood there looking sad.

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only person in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have happened there these days?”

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, “What things?” They answered him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

²¹ But we had confidence that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Yes, and what is more, it is now the third day since all these things happened.

²² But also, some women of our company amazed us, having been at the tomb early in the morning.

²³ When they did not find his body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

²⁴ Some men who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said. But they did not see him.”

²⁵ Jesus said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Then beginning from Moses and through all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.

²⁸ As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as though he were going further.

²⁹ But they compelled him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is almost over.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.

²³ and when his body was not found, they came, and said, that they saw also a sight of angels, which said, that he liveth.

²⁹ And they constrained him, and said, Dwell with us, for it draweth to night, and the day is now bowed down. And he entered in with them.

³⁰ And it was done, while he sat at the meat with them, he took bread, and blessed, and brake, and took or gave to them.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What be these words, that ye speak together wandering, and ye be sorrowful? (And he asked them, What be these things, that ye talk about as ye be walking, and ye be so sad?)

²¹ But we hoped, that he should have again-bought Israel, (or And we had hoped, that he would have redeemed, or ransomed, Israel). And now on all these things the third day is today, that these things were done.

²² But also some women of ours made us afeared, which before daylight were at the grave; (And some of our women have made us afraid, who before daylight were at the tomb;)

²³ and when his body was not found, they came, and said, that they saw also a sight of angels, which said (or who said), that he liveth.

²⁴ And some men of ours went to the grave, and they found so as the women said, but they found not him. (And some of our men went to the tomb, and they found it just as the women had said, but they did not find him.)

²⁵ And he said to them, A! fools (or O fools!), and slow of heart to believe in all (the) things that the prophets have spoken.

²⁶ Whether it behooved not Christ to suffer these things (or Did it not behoove the Messiah to suffer these things), and so to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And he began at Moses and at all the prophets, and declared or expounded to them in all (the) scriptures, that were of him (or that were about him).

²⁸ And they came nigh to the castle, whither they went, (or And they came near to the village, where they were going). And he made countenance that he would go further.

²⁹ And they constrained him, and said, Dwell with us (or Remain with us), for it draweth to (the) night, and the day is now bowed down. And (so) he entered in with them.

³⁰ And it was done, while he sat at the meat with them (or while he sat down for the meal with them), he took bread, and blessed (it), and brake (it), and (then) took (it) to them or and (then) gave (it) to them.

¹⁷ And he seide to hem, What ben these wordis, that ye speken togidir wandrynge, and ye ben sorewful?

¹⁸ And oon, whos name was Cleofas, answerde, and seide, Thou thi silf art a pilgrym in Jerusalem, and hast thou not knowun, what thingis ben don in it in these daies?

¹⁹ To whom he seide, What thingis? And thei seiden to hym, Of Jhesu of Nazareth, that was a man prophete, myyti in werk and word bifor God and al the puple;

²⁰ and hou the heiyest preestis of oure princis bitoken hym in to dampnacioun of deeth, and crucifieden hym.

²¹ But we hopiden, that he schulde haue ayenbouyt Israel. And now on alle these thingis the thridde dai is to dai, that these thingis weren don.

²² But also summe wymmen of ouris maden vs afered, whiche bifor dai weren at the graue; and whanne his bodi was not foundun,

²³ thei camen, and seiden, that thei syen also a siyt of aungels, whiche seien, that he lyueth.

²⁴ And summe of oure wenten to the graue, and thei founden so as the wymmen seiden, but thei founden not hym.

²⁵ And he seide to hem, A! foolis, and slowe of herte to bileue in alle thingis that the prophetis han spokun.

²⁶ Whethir it bihofte not Crist to suffre these thingis, and so to entre in to his glorie?

²⁷ And he bigan at Moises and at alle the prophetis, and declaride to hem in alle scripturis, that weren of hym.

²⁸ And thei camen nyy the castel, whidur thei wenten. And he made countenaunce that he wolde go ferthere.

²⁹ And thei constreyneden hym, and seiden, Dwelle with vs, for it drawith to nyyt, and the dai is now bowid doun.

³⁰ And he entride with hem. And it was don, while he sat at the mete with hem, he took breed, and blesside, and brak, and took to hem.

¹⁷ and he said unto them, 'What are these words that ye exchange with one another, walking, and ye are sad?'

¹⁸ And the one, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, 'Art thou alone such a stranger in Jerusalem, that thou hast not known the things that came to pass in it in these days?'

¹⁹ And he said to them, 'What things?' And they said to him, 'The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who became a man — a prophet — powerful in deed and word, before God and all the people,

²⁰ how also the chief priests and our rulers did deliver him up to a judgment of death, and crucified him;

²¹ and we were hoping that he it is who is about to redeem Israel, and also with all these things, this third day is passing to-day, since these things happened.

²² 'And certain women of ours also astonished us, coming early to the tomb,

²³ and not having found his body, they came, saying also to have seen an apparition of messengers, who say he is alive,

²⁴ and certain of those with us went away unto the tomb, and found as even the women said, and him they saw not.'

²⁵ And he said unto them, 'O inconsiderate and slow in heart, to believe on all that the prophets spake!

²⁶ Was it not behoving the Christ these things to suffer, and to enter into his glory?'

²⁷ and having begun from Moses, and from all the prophets, he was expounding to them in all the Writings the things about himself.

²⁸ And they came nigh to the village whither they were going, and he made an appearance of going on further,

²⁹ and they constrained him, saying, 'Remain with us, for it is toward evening,' and the day did decline, and he went in to remain with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, in his reclining (at meat) with them, having taken the bread, he blessed, and having broken, he was giving to them,
