Luke 8:21-48 in English

²¹ But he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these that hear the word of God, and do it.

²² Now it came to pass on one of those days, that he entered into a boat, himself and his disciples; and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake: and they launched forth.

²³ But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy.

²⁴ And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. And he awoke, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.

²⁵ And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And being afraid they marvelled, saying one to another, Who then is this, that he commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey him?

²⁶ And they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is over against Galilee.

²⁷ And when he was come forth upon the land, there met him a certain man out of the city, who had demons; and for a long time he had worn no clothes, and abode not in any house, but in the tombs.

²⁸ And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee, torment me not.

²⁹ For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For oftentimes it had seized him: and he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters; and breaking the bands asunder, he was driven of the demon into the deserts.

³⁰ And Jesus asked him, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; for many demons were entered into him.

³¹ And they entreated him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss.

³² Now there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them leave to enter into them. And he gave them leave.

³³ And the demons came out from the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned.

³⁴ And when they that fed them saw what had come to pass, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.

³⁵ And they went out to see what had come to pass; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, from whom the demons were gone out, sitting, clothed and in his right mind, at the feet of Jesus: and they were afraid.

³⁶ And they that saw it told them how he that was possessed with demons was made whole.

³⁷ And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes round about asked him to depart from them; for they were holden with great fear: and he entered into a boat, and returned.

³⁸ But the man from whom the demons were gone out prayed him that he might be with him: but he sent him away, saying,

³⁹ Return to thy house, and declare how great things God hath done for thee. And he went his way, publishing throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ And as Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him; for they were all waiting for him.

⁴¹ And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus’ feet, and besought him to come into his house;

⁴² for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went the multitudes thronged him.

⁴³ And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed of any,

⁴⁴ came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately the issue of her blood stanched.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, Who is it that touched me? And when all denied, Peter said, and they that were with him, Master, the multitudes press thee and crush thee.

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, Some one did touch me; for I perceived that power had gone forth from me.

⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people for what cause she touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

⁴⁸ And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

³⁵ Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

³⁶ They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.

³⁷ Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

³⁸ Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

²¹ He replied, “Those who hear God's message and obey it are as dear to me MET as my mother and my brothers.”

²² One day Jesus got into a boat with his disciples. He said to them, “Let's go around to the other side of the lake.” So they started to go.

²³ As they were sailing, he fell asleep. A big windstorm struck the lake. Soon the boat was filling with water, and they were in danger.

²⁴ Jesus' disciples woke him up. They said to him, “Master! Master! We (inc) are going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and told the waves to be calm. The wind immediately stopped blowing and the waves calmed down. The lake became calm.

²⁵ He said to them, “◄I am disappointed that you did not trust me to help you!/Why did you not trust me to help you?►” RHQ They were afraid. They were also amazed. They said to each other, “◄What kind of man is this?/This man is not like ordinary men!► RHQ He not only commands people, but when he commands the wind and the water, they also obey him!”

²⁶ Jesus and his disciples arrived at the region near Gerasa, a town which was on the eastern side of Lake Galilee.

²⁷ There was a man in that region in whom demons lived. He was from the town of Gerasa. (OR, In that area there was a man from that town whom demons controlled.) For a long time he had not worn clothes. He did not live in a house. Instead, he lived in burial caves.

²⁸ Many times demons attacked him. He was guarded { People tried to guard him} so that he would not injure others. Chains were fastened {They fastened chains} on his hands and shackles on his feet, but he would break the chains and shackles. Then he would be sent away by the demons {the demons would send him away} to some desolate area. When Jesus stepped out of the boat onto the shore, the man saw him. He ran to Jesus and prostrated himself before him. Then Jesus commanded, “You evil spirit, come out of that man!” But it did not leave immediately. Instead, it caused the man to shout very loudly, “Jesus, Son of the great God in heaven, since we (inc) have nothing in common, leave me alone RHQ! I beg you, do not torture me now!”

³⁰ In order to expel the demon more easily, Jesus asked the demon, “What is your (sg) name?” He replied, “My name is Crowd/Mob.” He said that because many demons had entered that man.

³¹ The demons kept begging Jesus that he would not command them to go into the deep place where God punishes demons.

³² There was a large herd of pigs ◄grazing/rooting for food► on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus that he allow them to enter the pigs. So he did.

³³ The demons left the man and entered the pigs. Then the herd of pigs rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

³⁴ When the men who were taking care of the pigs saw what happened, they ran! They told people inside the town and outside the town what had happened.

³⁵ So people went out to see what had happened. When they came to where Jesus was, they saw that the man from whom Jesus had expelled the demons was sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to him. He had clothes on, and his mind was normal again. Then those people became afraid because they thought that Jesus would destroy more of their property (OR, because they realized that he must be very powerful).

³⁶ The people who had seen what happened told those who had just arrived how Jesus had healed the man whom demons were controlling before.

³⁷ Then those people and many other people HYP from the area near Gerasa asked Jesus to leave their area. They were very afraid of what else Jesus would do to them. So Jesus and the disciples got into the boat to go back across the lake.

³⁸ The man from whom he had expelled the demons begged him saying, “ Please, let me go with you!” But Jesus refused. Instead, he said to him,

³⁹ “ No, go home and tell people how much God has done for you!” Then he sent him away. So the man went away and told people throughout the nearby town how much Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ When Jesus and the disciples returned to Capernaum, a crowd of people who had been waiting for him welcomed him.

⁴¹ Just then a man named Jairus, who was one of the leaders ◄of the synagogue/of the Jewish meeting place► there, came near and prostrated himself at Jesus' feet. He pleaded with Jesus, “Please come to my house and heal my daughter,

⁴² my only daughter, who is about twelve years old, because she is dying!” As Jesus went with him, many people crowded close to Jesus.

⁴³ Then a woman came near. She had been suffering from constant vaginal EUP bleeding for twelve years, but she could not be healed by anyone {no one could heal her}.

⁴⁴ She came behind Jesus and touched the edge of his robe in order to be healed. At once her bleeding stopped.

⁴⁵ Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When everyone said that they had not touched him, Peter said, “Lord, there is a large crowd of people around you (sg) and crowding against you, so any one of them might have touched you!”

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “ I know that someone deliberately touched me, because my power has healed someone who touched me.”

⁴⁷ When the woman realized that she could not prevent Jesus (OR, people) from knowing that she was healed, her body began to shake. She was afraid that because she had disobeyed the law that a woman with such a condition should not touch others, Jesus might scold her for doing that. She prostrated herself before Jesus. As the other people were listening, she told why she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately.

⁴⁸ Jesus said to her, “◄Ma'am/My dear woman►, because you believed PRS that I could heal you, I have healed you. Go from here, and may you experience God's peace within you.”

⁴⁸ He said to her, “Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

⁴⁵ Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes press and jostle you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone out of me.”

⁴⁷ When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him declared to him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

⁴⁸ He said to her, “Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

²¹ But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

²² Now on one of those days, he entered into a boat, himself and his disciples, and he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.

²³ But as they sailed, he fell asleep. A wind storm came down on the lake, and they were taking on dangerous amounts of water.

²⁴ They came to him and awoke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are dying!” He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; then they ceased, and it was calm.

²⁵ He said to them, “Where is your faith?” Being afraid, they marvelled, saying to one another, “Who is this then, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”

²⁶ Then they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.

²⁷ When Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man out of the city who had demons for a long time met him. He wore no clothes, and didn’t live in a house, but in the tombs.

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torment me!”

²⁹ For Jesus was commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For the unclean spirit had often seized the man. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and fetters. Breaking the bonds apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert.

³⁰ Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered into him.

³¹ They begged him that he would not command them to go into the abyss.

³² Now there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain, and they begged him that he would allow them to enter into those. Then he allowed them.

³³ The demons came out of the man and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

³⁴ When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.

³⁵ People went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

³⁶ Those who saw it told them how he who had been possessed by demons was healed.

³⁷ All the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them, for they were very much afraid. Then he entered into the boat and returned.

³⁸ But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him that he might go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ “Return to your house, and declare what great things God has done for you.” He went his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ When Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.

⁴¹ Behold, a man named Jairus came. He was a ruler of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged him to come into his house,

⁴² for he had an only born daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went, the multitudes pressed against him.

⁴³ A woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her living on physicians and could not be healed by any,

⁴⁴ came behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak. Immediately the flow of her blood stopped.

⁴⁵ Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes press and jostle you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

²² Now it came about on one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples; and he said to them, Let us go over to the other side of the water: and they put out the boat.

²³ But while they were sailing he went to sleep: and a storm of wind came down on the sea, and the boat became full of water and they were in danger.

²⁴ Then they came to him and, awaking him out of his sleep, said, Master, Master, destruction is near. And he, when he was awake, gave orders to the wind and the rolling waves, and the storm came to an end, and all was calm.

²⁵ And he said to them, Where is your faith? And fear and wonder overcame them, and they said to one another, Who then is this, who gives orders even to the winds and the water and they do what he says?

²⁶ And they came to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.

²⁷ And when he had come to the land, there came to him a certain man from the town who had evil spirits; and for a long time he had had no clothing on, and was not living in a house but in the place of the dead.

²⁸ And when he saw Jesus, he gave a loud cry and went down on the earth before him and in a loud voice said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Do not be cruel to me.

²⁹ For he gave an order to the evil spirit to come out of the man. For frequently it would take a grip of him: and he was kept under control, and prisoned with chains; but parting the chains in two, he would be sent by the driving of the evil spirit into waste places.

³⁰ And Jesus said to him, What is your name? And he said, Legion; for a number of spirits had gone into him.

³¹ And they made a request to him that he would not give them an order to go away into the deep.

³² Now there was a great herd of pigs in that place, getting food on the mountain: and the evil spirits made a request to him that he would let them go into the pigs, and he let them.

³³ And the evil spirits came out of the man and went into the pigs: and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the water and came to destruction.

³⁴ And when the men who took care of them saw what had come about, they went quickly and gave news of it in the town and the country.

³⁵ And they went out to see what had taken place, and they came to Jesus and saw the man out of whom the evil spirits had gone, seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, at the feet of Jesus; and fear came on them.

³⁶ And those who had seen it gave them an account of how the man who had the evil spirits was made well.

³⁷ And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes made a request to him to go away from them; for they were in great fear: and he got into a boat and went back.

³⁸ But the man from whom the evil spirits had gone out had a great desire to be with him, but he sent him away, saying,

³⁹ Go back to your house and let them have news of all the great things which God has done for you. And he went away, giving word through all the town of the great things which Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ And when Jesus went back, the people were glad to see him, for they were all waiting for him.

⁴¹ Then there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler in the Synagogue: and he went down at the feet of Jesus, desiring him to come to his house;

⁴² For he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was near to death. But while he was on his way, the people were pushing to be near him.

⁴³ And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had given all her money to medical men, and not one of them was able to make her well,

⁴⁴ Came after him and put her hand on the edge of his robe, and straight away the flowing of her blood was stopped.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, Who was touching me? And when they all said, It is not I, Peter and those who were with him said, Master, the people are pushing round you on every side.

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, Someone was touching me, for I had the feeling that power had gone out from me.

⁴⁷ And when the woman saw that she was not able to keep it secret, she came, shaking with fear, and falling down before him she made clear before all the people the reason for her touching him, and how she was made well straight away.

⁴⁸ And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.

²² And it came to pass on one of the days, that he entered into a ship, himself and his disciples; and he said to them, Let us pass over to the other side of the lake; and they set off from shore.

²³ And as they sailed, he fell asleep; and a sudden squall of wind came down on the lake, and they were filled with water, and were in danger;

²⁴ and coming to him they woke him up, saying, Master, master, we perish. But he, rising up, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and there was a calm.

²⁵ And he said to them, Where is your faith? And, being afraid, they were astonished, saying to one another, Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?

²⁶ And they arrived in the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

²⁷ And as he got out of the ship on the land, a certain man out of the city met him, who had demons a long time, and put on no clothes, and did not abide in a house, but in the tombs.

²⁸ But seeing Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee torment me not.

²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to go out from the man. For very often it had seized him; and he had been bound, kept with chains and fetters; and breaking the bonds he was driven by the demon into the deserts.

³⁰ And Jesus asked him saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: for many demons had entered into him.

³¹ And they besought him that he would not command them to go away into the bottomless pit.

³² And there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain, and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into those; and he suffered them.

³³ And the demons, going out from the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the precipice into the lake, and were choked.

³⁴ But they that fed them, seeing what had happened, fled, and told it to the city and to the country.

³⁵ And they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting, clothed and sensible, at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid.

³⁶ And they also who had seen it told them how the possessed man had been healed.

³⁷ And all the multitude of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them, for they were possessed with great fear; and he, entering into the ship, returned.

³⁸ But the man out of whom the demons had gone besought him that he might be with him. But he sent him away, saying,

³⁹ Return to thine house and relate how great things God has done for thee. And he went away through the whole city, publishing how great things Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ And it came to pass when Jesus returned, the crowd received him gladly, for they were all expecting him.

⁴⁴ coming up behind, touched the hem of his garment, and immediately her flux of blood stopped.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, Who has touched me? But all denying, Peter and those with him said, Master, the crowds close thee in and press upon thee, and sayest thou, Who has touched me?

⁴⁶ And Jesus said, Some one has touched me, for I have known that power has gone out from me.

⁴⁸ And he said to her, Be of good courage, daughter; thy faith has healed thee; go in peace.

²⁸ And when he saw Jesus, he fell down before him; and crying out with a loud voice, he said: What have I to do with thee, Jesus, Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me.

³⁶ And they also that had seen, told them how he had been healed from the legion.

³⁷ And all the multitude of the country of the Gerasens besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear. And he, going up into the ship, returned back again.

³⁸ Now the man, out of whom the devils were departed, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus sent him away, saying:

⁴⁴ She came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment; and immediately the issue of her blood stopped.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said: Who is it that touched me? And all denying, Peter and they that were with him said: Master, the multitudes throng and press thee, and dost thou say, Who touched me?

⁴⁶ And Jesus said: Somebody hath touched me; for I know that virtue is gone out from me.

⁴⁷ And the woman seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and fell down before his feet, and declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed.

⁴⁸ But he said to her: Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go thy way in peace.

²⁵ But He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But becoming afraid, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this? For He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”

²⁶ Then they sailed to the region of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.

³⁵ Then they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had come out of, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and being of sound mind. And they were afraid.

³⁶ And those also who saw reported to them how the demon-possessed man was healed.

³⁷ Then the whole multitude from the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to go away from them, because they were gripped with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned.

³⁸ Now the man from whom the demons had come out was begging Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ “Return to your house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he departed, proclaiming throughout the whole city all the things that Jesus did for him.

⁴⁴ approaching from behind, touched the hem of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the crowds are pressing You hard and crowding You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I perceived that power has gone out from Me.”

⁴⁷ Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she recounted to Him before all the people the reason why she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately.

⁴⁸ And He said to her, “Take courage, daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

²¹ But in answer He said to them, “My mother and my brothers are these, the ones who hear the word of God and do it!”

²² Now it happened on one of those days that He got into a boat with His disciples; and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out.

²⁴ So they came and awakened Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He got up and rebuked the wind and the waves of water—and they stopped, and there was a calm!

²⁵ So He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But being terrified they marveled, saying to each other: “Who can this be? Because He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!”

²⁶ Then they sailed to the district of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.

²⁷ Well when He stepped out on the land, a certain man of that town met Him, who had had demons for a long time—he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house, but among the tombs.

²⁸ When he saw Jesus he gave a yell, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice he said: “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torment me!”

²⁹ because He had commanded the unclean spirit to get out of the man (it had seized him many times—he would be bound with chains and shackles, being kept under guard; then bursting the bonds he would be driven by the demon into deserted places).

³⁰ Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion” (because many demons had gone into him).

³¹ And he kept imploring Him that He would not order them to go away into the Abyss.

³² Now a herd of many pigs was feeding there on the hillside; and they started begging Him that He would allow them to go into those; so He gave them permission.

³³ Then the demons exited the man and entered the pigs—and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned!

³⁴ Well when the herders saw what had happened they ran away and reported it in the town and in the countryside.

³⁵ So they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus; they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus' feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

³⁶ Also, the eyewitnesses reported to them how the demonized man was healed.

³⁷ Then the whole multitude from the surrounding region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from them, because they were overcome by fear. So He got into the boat and returned.

³⁸ Now the man from whom the demons had gone out had started begging Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ “Return to your house and recount how much God has done for you.” So he went his way and proclaimed all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁵ So Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said: “Master, the people are pressing against you and crowding in, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ”

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, because I noticed power going out from me.”

⁴⁷ Now when the woman saw that she could not hide, she came trembling, and falling down before Him she told Him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she was healed immediately.

⁴⁸ So He said: “Courage, daughter, your faith has healed you. Go into peace.”

²¹ “My mother and my brothers are those who hear God's word, and do what it says,” Jesus replied.

²² One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let's cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set off.

²³ As they were sailing, Jesus fell asleep, and a storm came down on the lake. The boat began filling with water and they were in danger of sinking.

²⁴ They went over to Jesus and woke him up. “Master, master, we're going to drown!” they said. Jesus woke up and commanded the wind and the rough waves to stop. They stopped, and all was calm.

²⁵ “Where is your trust?” he asked them. Terrified and amazed, they said to each other, “So who is this? He gives commands to the winds and the water, and they obey him!”

²⁶ They sailed across to the Gerasene region that lies opposite Galilee.

²⁷ When Jesus stepped out of the boat onto the shore, a demon-possessed man from the town came to meet him. For a long time he hadn't worn any clothes or lived in a house. He lived in the tombs.

²⁸ When he saw Jesus he screamed, fell down at Jesus' feet, and asked in a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Please don't torture me, I beg you!”

²⁹ For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to leave the man. It had often seized him, and despite being tied down with chains and shackles, and placed under guard, he would break the chains apart and would be driven by the demon into the desert areas.

³⁰ “What is your name?” Jesus asked him. “Legion,” he replied, for many demons had entered him.

³¹ They begged Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss.

³² There was a large herd of pigs feeding on the nearby hillside, and the demons begged him to be allowed to go into the pigs. Jesus gave them permission,

³³ so the demons left the man and entered the pigs. The herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and drowned.

³⁴ When the pig-keepers saw what had happened they ran off and spread the news through the town and the countryside.

³⁵ The people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus they found the man freed from the demons. He was sitting there at Jesus' feet, wearing clothes and in his right mind; and they became scared.

³⁶ Those who had seen what happened explained how the demon-possessed man had been healed.

³⁷ Then all the people from the Gerasene region asked Jesus to leave because they were overwhelmed by fear. So he got into the boat and went back.

³⁸ The man who had been freed from the demons begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away.

³⁹ “Go back home, and tell people all that God has done for you,” Jesus told him. So he went away, telling the whole town all that Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ A crowd of people was there to welcome Jesus when he returned, all eagerly expecting him.

⁴¹ One was a man called Jairus, a synagogue leader, who came and fell at Jesus' feet. He pleaded with Jesus to come to his home

⁴² because his only daughter was dying. She was about twelve years old. While Jesus was on his way there, people were crowding around him.

⁴³ In the crowd was a woman who had suffered with bleeding for twelve years. She had spent all she had on doctors, but none of them had been able to help her.

⁴⁴ She approached Jesus from behind and touched the hem of his cloak. Immediately the bleeding stopped.

⁴⁵ “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Everybody around denied doing so. “But Master,” said Peter, “there are people crowding around you, and they keep pushing up against you.”

⁴⁶ “Someone touched me,” Jesus replied. “I know because power went out from me.”

⁴⁷ When the woman realized she couldn't go unnoticed, she came forward, trembling, and fell down before him. Right in front of everybody she explained the reason why she had touched Jesus, and that she'd been cured immediately.

⁴⁸ Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your trust has healed you, go in peace.”

²¹ But he answered, and sayd vnto them, My mother and my brethren are these which heare the worde of God, and doe it.

²² And it came to passe on a certaine day, that he went into a ship with his disciples, and he sayd vnto them, Let vs goe ouer vnto the other side of the lake. And they lanched forth.

²³ And as they sayled, he fell a sleepe, and there came downe a storme of winde on the lake, and they were filled with water, and were in ieopardie.

²⁴ Then they went to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, Master, we perish. And he arose, and rebuked the winde, and the waues of water: and they ceased, and it was calme.

²⁵ Then he sayde vnto them, Where is your fayth? and they feared, and wondered among them selues, saying, Who is this that commandeth both the windes and water, and they obey him!

²⁶ So they sailed vnto the region of the Gadarenes, which is ouer against Galile.

²⁷ And as he went out to land, there met him a certaine man out of the citie, which had deuils long time, and he ware no garment, neither abode in house, but in the graues.

²⁸ And when he sawe Iesus, he cryed out and fell downe before him, and with a loude voyce sayd, What haue I to doe with thee, Iesus the Sonne of God the most High? I beseech thee torment me not.

²⁹ For he commanded ye foule spirit to come out of the man: (for oft times he had caught him: therefore he was bound with chaines, and kept in fetters: but he brake the bands, and was caried of the deuill into wildernesses.)

³⁰ Then Iesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? and he sayd, Legion, because many deuils were entred into him.

³¹ And they besought him, that he would not commaund them to goe out into the deepe.

³² And there was there by, an hearde of many swine, feeding on an hill: and the deuils besought him, that he would suffer them to enter into them. So he suffered them.

³³ Then went the deuils out of the man, and entred into the swine: and the hearde was caried with violence from a steepe downe place into the lake, and was choked.

³⁴ When the heardmen sawe what was done, they fled: and when they were departed, they tolde it in the citie and in the countrey.

³⁵ Then they came out to see what was done, and came to Iesus, and found the man, out of whom the deuils were departed, sitting at the feete of Iesus, clothed, and in his right minde: and they were afrayd.

³⁶ They also which saw it, tolde them by what meanes he that was possessed with the deuill, was healed.

³⁷ Then the whole multitude of the countrey about the Gadarenes, besought him that he would depart from them: for they were taken with a great feare: and he went into the ship, and returned.

³⁸ Then the man, out of whome the deuils were departed, besought him that hee might be with him: but Iesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ Returne into thine owne house, and shewe what great things God hath done to thee. So hee went his way, and preached throughout all the citie, what great things Iesus had done vnto him.

⁴⁰ And it came to passe, when Iesus was come againe, that the people receiued him: for they all waited for him.

⁴¹ And beholde, there came a man named Iairus, and he was the ruler of the Synagogue, who fell downe at Iesus feete, and besought him that he would come into his house.

⁴² For he had but a daughter onely, about twelue yeeres of age, and she lay a dying (and as he went, the people thronged him.

⁴³ And a woman hauing an yssue of blood, twelue yeeres long, which had spent all her substance vpon physicians, and could not be healed of any:

⁴⁴ When she came behind him, she touched the hemme of his garment, and immediatly her yssue of blood stanched.

⁴⁵ Then Iesus sayd, Who is it that hath touched me? When euery man denied, Peter sayd and they that were with him, Master, the multitude thrust thee, and tread on thee, and sayest thou, Who hath touched me?

⁴⁶ And Iesus sayde, Some one hath touched me: for I perceiue that vertue is gone out of me.

⁴⁷ When the woman sawe that she was not hid, she came trembling, and fell downe before him, and tolde him before all the people, for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediatly.

⁴⁸ And he said vnto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath saued thee: go in peace.)

³⁶ And they who had seen it told them how he that was possessed by demons was made well.

⁴⁴ came up behind and touched the tassel of his cloak. Instantly the hemorrhage ceased.

⁴⁵ “Who touched me?” Jesus asked; and, while everyone was denying having done so, Peter exclaimed, “Why, Sir, the people are crowding around you and pressing against you!”

²⁵ He said to them, “Where is your trusting faith?” Being afraid they marveled, saying to one another, “Who is this, then, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”

²⁶ They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee District, Circuit.

²⁷ When Yeshua Salvation stepped ashore, a certain man out of the city who had demons for a long time met him. He wore no clothes, and didn’t live in a house, but in the tombs.

²² Now one day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” They set sail.

²³ But as they sailed he fell asleep. A terrible windstorm came down on the lake, and their boat was filling with water, and they were in danger.

²⁴ Then Jesus' disciples came over to him and woke him up, saying, “Master! Master! We are about to die!” He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm.

²⁵ Then he said to them, “Where is your faith?” and they were afraid. While they were afraid they were also amazed, and they asked one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”

²⁶ They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.

²⁷ When Jesus stepped on the land, he was met by a certain man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but among the tombs.

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and he said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.”

²⁹ For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and he would be driven by the demon into the wilderness.

³⁰ Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” and he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered into him.

³¹ They kept begging him not to send them into the abyss.

³² Now a large herd of pigs was there feeding on the hillside. The demons begged him to let them go into them, and he gave them permission.

³³ So the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and was drowned.

³⁴ When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and told about it in the city and countryside.

³⁵ So the people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out. He was sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

³⁶ Then those who had seen it told them how the man who had been possessed by demons had been healed.

³⁷ Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, for they were overwhelmed with great fear. So he got into the boat so they could start back.

³⁸ The man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to let him go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ “Return to your home and give a full account of what God has done for you.” The man went on his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city what Jesus had done for him.

⁴⁰ Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

⁴¹ Behold, a man named Jairus, who was one of the leaders of the synagogue, came and fell down at Jesus' feet, and he begged him to come to his house,

⁴² because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve years of age, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds of people pressed together around him.

⁴³ Now a woman was there who had been bleeding for twelve years and had spent all her money , and could not be healed by anyone.

⁴⁴ She came behind Jesus and touched the edge of his coat, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

⁴⁵ Jesus said, “Who was it who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds of people are all around you and they are pressing in against you.”

⁴⁶ But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, for I know that power has gone out from me.”

⁴⁷ When the woman saw that she could not escape notice, she came trembling and fell down before him. In the presence of all the people she declared why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed.

⁴⁸ Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”

³¹ And they prayed him, that he should not command them, that they should go into hell or into the deep-ness.

³² And there was a flock of many swine or many hogs pasturing in an hill, and they prayed him, that he should suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

³³ And so the devils went out from the man, and entered into the swine or the hogs; and with a rush the flock went headlong into the pool or into the lake of water, and was drenched or drowned.

³⁴ And when the herders saw this thing done, they fled, and told into the city, and into the towns.

³⁵ And they went out to see that thing that was done. And they came to Jesus, and they found the man sitting clothed, from whom the devils went out, and in whole mind at his feet; and they dreaded.

³⁶ And they that saw told to them, how he was made whole of the legion.

³⁷ And all the multitude of the country of Gadarenes prayed him, that he should go from them, for they were held with great dread. And he went up into a boat, and turned again.

³⁸ And the man of whom the devils were gone out or of whom the fiends went out, prayed him, that he should be with him. Soothly Jesus let him go, and said,

³⁹ Go again into thine house, and tell how great things God hath done to thee. And he went through all the city, and preached, how great things Jesus had done to him.

⁴⁰ And it was done, when Jesus was gone again or had gone again, the people received him; for all were abiding him.

⁴¹ And lo! a man, to whom the name was Jairus, and he was a prince of a synagogue; and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, and prayed him, that he should enter into his house,

⁴² for he had but one daughter or an only daughter, almost of twelve years old, and she was dead. And it befell, the while he went, he was thronged of the people.

⁴³ And a woman that had a flux of blood twelve years, and had spended all her chattel or all her substance in leeches, and might not be cured of any,

⁴⁴ and she came nigh behind, and touched the hem of his cloth, and anon the flux of her blood ceased.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, Who is it that touched me? And when all men denied, Peter said, and they that were with him, Commander, the people thrust or throng and dis-ease thee, and thou sayest, Who touched me?

⁴⁶ And Jesus said, Some man hath touched me, for I have known that virtue went out of me.

²⁷ And when he went out to the land, a man ran to him, that had a devil now (a) long time, and he was not clothed with cloth, neither dwelled in (a) house, but in sepulchres. (And when he got onto the land, a man ran over to him, who for a long time now had a demon, and he was not clothed with a cloak, nor lived in a house, but dwelt among the tombs.)

²⁸ This (man), when he saw Jesus, fell down before him, and he crying with a great voice said, (or and he cried with a loud voice, and said), What to me and to thee, Jesus, the Son of the Highest God? I beseech thee, that thou torment me not.

²⁹ For he (had) commanded the unclean spirit, that he should go out from the man. For he took him oft times, and he was bound with chains, and kept in stocks, and when the bonds were broken, he was led of the devil into desert (or he was led by the demon into the desert).

³⁰ And Jesus asked him, and said, What name is to thee? And he said, A legion; for many devils were entered into him, or for many devils had entered into him, (or for there were many demons in him).

³¹ And they prayed him (or And they beseeched him), that he should not command them, that they should go into hell or that they should go into the deepness.

³² And there was a flock of many swine or of many hogs pasturing in an hill, and they prayed him, that he should suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. (And there was a herd of many pigs at pasture on a hill, and they beseeched him, that he would allow them to enter into them. And he allowed them.)

³³ And so the devils went out from the man, and entered into the swine or into the hogs; and with a rush the flock went headlong into the pool or into the lake of water, and was drenched. (And so the demons went out of the man, and entered into the pigs; and with a rush the herd went headlong into the lake, and were drowned.)

³⁴ And when the herders saw this thing done, they fled, and told into the city, and into the towns.

³⁵ And they went out to see that thing that was done. And they came to Jesus, and they found the man sitting clothed, from whom the devils went out, and in whole mind at his feet; and they dreaded (or and they had great fear).

³⁶ And they that saw told to them, how he was made whole of the legion. (And they who saw it all, told them how he was healed from the legion of devils and demons.)

³⁷ And all the multitude of the country of Gadarenes prayed him, that he should go (away) from them, for they were held with great dread. And he went up into a boat, and turned again (to the other side). (And all the multitude from the countryside of Gadarenes beseeched him, that he would go away from them, for they were held with great fear. And so he went up into the boat, and returned to the other side.)

³⁸ And the man of whom the devils were gone out, or And the man of whom the fiends went out, prayed him, that he should be with him. Soothly Jesus left him (or let him go), and said, (And the man from whom the demons went out, beseeched him, that he could be with him. But Jesus sent him away, and said,)

³⁹ Go again into thine house, and tell how great things God hath done to thee. And he went through all the city, and preached, how great things Jesus had done to him. (Return to thine house, and to thy people, and tell them what great things God hath done for thee. And so he went through all the city, and preached, what great things Jesus had done for him.)

⁴⁰ And it was done, when Jesus was gone (home) again or when Jesus had gone (home) again, the people received him; for all were abiding him (or for all of them were waiting for him).

⁴¹ And lo! a man, to whom the name was Jairus, and he was a prince of a synagogue (or and he was a leader of a synagogue); and he fell down at the feet of Jesus, and prayed him (or beseeched him), that he should enter into his house,

⁴² for he had but one daughter or an only daughter, almost of twelve years old, and she was dead. And it befell, the while he went, he was thronged of the people. (for he had an only daughter, almost twelve years old, and she was dying. And it befell, that while he went, he was thronged by the people.)

⁴³ And a woman that had a flux of blood (for) twelve years, and had spended all her chattel or all her substance in leeches, and might not be cured of any, (And there was a woman who had a flowing, or an issue, of blood for twelve years, and had spent all of her resources on physicians, and could not be cured by any of them,)

⁴⁴ and she came nigh behind, and touched the hem of his cloth, and anon the flux of her blood ceased. (and she came up close behind him, and touched the hem of his cloak, and at once the flowing, or the issue, of her blood ceased.)

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, Who is it that touched me? And when all men denied (it), Peter said, and they that were with him, Commander (or Master), the people thrust or throng and dis-ease thee, and thou sayest, Who touched me?

⁴⁶ And Jesus said, Some man hath touched me, for I have known that virtue went out of me. (And Jesus said, Someone hath touched me, for I know that power hath gone out of me.)

⁴⁷ And the woman seeing, that it was not hid from him, came trembling, and fell down at his feet, and for what cause she had touched him she showed before all the people, and how anon she was healed (or and how at once she was healed).

⁴⁸ And he said to her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee safe, (or Daughter, thy faith hath saved thee, or thy faith hath healed thee); go thou in peace.

²¹ And he answeride, and seide to hem, My modir and my britheren ben these, that heren the word of God, and doon it.

²² And it was don in oon of daies, he wente vp in to a boot, and hise disciplis. And he seide to hem, Passe we ouer the see. And thei wenten vp.

²³ And while thei rowiden, he slepte. And a tempest of wynde cam doun in to the watir, and thei weren dryuun hidur and thidur with wawis, and weren in perel.

²⁴ And thei camen nyy, and reisiden hym, and seiden, Comaundoure, we perischen. And he roos, and blamyde the wynde, and the tempest of the watir; and it ceesside, and pesibilte was maad.

²⁵ And he seide to hem, Where is youre feith? Which dredynge wondriden, and seiden togidir, Who, gessist thou, is this? for he comaundith to wyndis and to the see, and thei obeien to hym.

²⁶ And thei rowiden to the cuntree of Gerasenus, that is ayens Galilee.

²⁷ And whanne he wente out to the loond, a man ran to hym, that hadde a deuel long tyme, and he was not clothid with cloth, nether dwellide in hous, but in sepulcris.

²⁸ This, whanne he saiy Jhesu, fel doun bifor hym, and he criynge with a greet vois seide, What to me and to thee, Jhesu, the sone of the hiyest God? Y biseche thee, that thou turmente `not me.

²⁹ For he comaundide the vncleene spirit, that he schulde go out fro the man. For he took hym ofte tymes, and he was boundun with cheynes, and kept in stockis, and, whanne the boondis weren brokun, he was lad of deuelis in to desert.

³⁰ And Jhesus axide hym, and seide, What name is to thee? And he seide, A legioun ; for many deuelis weren entrid in to hym.

³¹ And thei preyden hym, that he schulde not comaunde hem, that thei schulden go in to helle.

³² And there was a flok of many swyne lesewynge in an hil, and thei preieden hym, that he schulde suffre hem to entre in to hem. And he suffride hem.

³³ And so the deuelis wenten out fro the man, and entriden in to the swyne; and with a birre the flok wente heedlyng in to the pool, and was drenchid.

³⁴ And whanne the hirdis sayn this thing don, thei flowen, and tolden in to the cite, and in to the townes.

³⁵ And thei yeden out to se that thing that was don. And thei camen to Jhesu, and thei founden the man sittynge clothid, fro whom the deuelis wenten out, and in hool mynde at hise feet; and thei dredden.

³⁶ And thei that sayn tolden to hem, hou he was maad hool of the legioun.

³⁷ And al the multitude of the cuntre of Gerasenus preiede hym, that he schulde go fro hem, for thei werun holdun with greet drede. He wente vp in to a boot, and turnede ayen.

³⁸ And the man of whom the deuelis weren gon out, preide hym, that he schulde be with hym. Jhesus lefte hym,

³⁹ and seide, Go ayen in to thin hous, and telle hou grete thingis God hath don to thee. And he wente thorow al the cite, and prechide, hou grete thingis Jhesus hadde don to hym.

⁴⁰ And it was don, whanne Jhesus was gon ayen, the puple resseyuede hym; for alle weren abidynge hym.

⁴¹ And lo! a man, to whom the name was Jayrus, and he was prynce of a synagoge; and he fel doun at the feet of Jhesu, and preiede hym, that he schulde entre in to his hous,

⁴² for he hadde but o douyter `almost of twelue yeer eelde, and sche was deed. And it bifel, the while he wente, he was thrungun of the puple.

⁴³ And a womman that hadde a flux of blood twelue yeer, and hadde spendid al hir catel in leechis, and sche miyte not be curid of ony,

⁴⁴ and sche cam nyy bihynde, and touchide the hem of his cloth, and anoon the fluxe of hir blood ceesside.

⁴⁵ And Jhesus seide, Who is that touchide me? And whanne alle men denyeden, Petre seide, and thei that weren with hym, Comaundour, the puple thristen, and disesen thee, and thou seist, Who touchide me?

⁴⁶ And Jhesus seide, Summan hath touchid me, for that vertu yede out of me.

⁴⁷ And the womman seynge, that it was not hid fro hym, cam tremblynge, and fel doun at hise feet, and for what cause sche hadde touchid hym sche schewide bifor al the puple, and hou anoon sche was helid.

⁴⁸ And he seide to hir, Douytir, thi feith hath maad thee saaf; go thou in pees.

²¹ and he answering said unto them, 'My mother and my brethren! they are those who the word of God are hearing, and doing.'

²² And it came to pass, on one of the days, that he himself went into a boat with his disciples, and he said unto them, 'We may go over to the other side of the lake;' and they set forth,

²³ and as they are sailing he fell deeply asleep, and there came down a storm of wind to the lake, and they were filling, and were in peril.

²⁴ And having come near, they awoke him, saying, 'Master, master, we perish;' and he, having arisen, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there came a calm,

²⁵ and he said to them, 'Where is your faith?' and they being afraid did wonder, saying unto one another, 'Who, then, is this, that even the winds he doth command, and the water, and they obey him?'

²⁶ And they sailed down to the region of the Gadarenes, that is over-against Galilee,

²⁷ and he having gone forth upon the land, there met him a certain man, out of the city, who had demons for a long time, and with a garment was not clothed, and in a house was not abiding, but in the tombs,

²⁸ and having seen Jesus, and having cried out, he fell before him, and with a loud voice, said, 'What — to me and to thee, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I beseech thee, mayest thou not afflict me!'

²⁹ For he commanded the unclean spirit to come forth from the man, for many times it had caught him, and he was being bound with chains and fetters — guarded, and breaking asunder the bonds he was driven by the demons to the deserts.

³⁰ And Jesus questioned him, saying, 'What is thy name?' and he said, 'Legion,' (because many demons were entered into him,)

³¹ and he was calling on him, that he may not command them to go away to the abyss,

³² and there was there a herd of many swine feeding in the mountain, and they were calling on him, that he might suffer them to enter into these, and he suffered them,

³³ and the demons having gone forth from the man, did enter into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep to the lake, and were choked.

³⁴ And those feeding them, having seen what was come to pass, fled, and having gone, told it to the city, and to the fields;

³⁵ and they came forth to see what was come to pass, and they came unto Jesus, and found the man sitting, out of whom the demons had gone forth, clothed, and right-minded, at the feet of Jesus, and they were afraid;

³⁶ and those also having seen it, told them how the demoniac was saved.

³⁷ And the whole multitude of the region of the Gadarenes round about asked him to go away from them, because with great fear they were pressed, and he having entered into the boat, did turn back.

³⁸ And the man from whom the demons had gone forth was beseeching of him to be with him, and Jesus sent him away, saying,

³⁹ 'Turn back to thy house, and tell how great things God did to thee;' and he went away through all the city proclaiming how great things Jesus did to him.

⁴⁰ And it came to pass, in the turning back of Jesus, the multitude received him, for they were all looking for him,

⁴¹ and lo, there came a man, whose name is Jairus, and he was a chief of the synagogue, and having fallen at the feet of Jesus, was calling on him to come to his house;

⁴² because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. And in his going away, the multitudes were thronging him,

⁴³ and a woman, having an issue of blood for twelve years, who, having spent on physicians all her living, was not able to be healed by any,

⁴⁴ having come near behind, touched the fringe of his garment, and presently the issue of her blood stood.

⁴⁵ And Jesus said, 'Who is it that touched me?' and all denying, Peter and those with him said, 'Master, the multitudes press thee, and throng thee, and thou dost say, Who is it that touched me!'

⁴⁶ And Jesus said, 'Some one did touch me, for I knew power having gone forth from me.'

⁴⁷ And the woman, having seen that she was not hid, trembling, came, and having fallen before him, for what cause she touched him declared to him before all the people, and how she was healed presently;

⁴⁸ and he said to her, 'Take courage, daughter, thy faith hath saved thee, be going on to peace.'
