³ And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him;

⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests alone?

⁵ And he said unto them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.

⁶ And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered.

⁷ And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find how to accuse him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man that had his hand withered, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

⁹ And Jesus said unto them, I ask you, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to destroy it?

¹⁰ And he looked round about on them all, and said unto him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored.

¹¹ But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And when it was day, he called his disciples; and he chose from them twelve, whom also he named apostles:

¹⁴ Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ and Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alphæus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,

¹⁶ and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor;

¹⁷ and he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judæa and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ and they that were troubled with unclean spirits were healed.

¹⁹ And all the multitude sought to touch him; for power came forth from him, and healed them all.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

⁹ Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

¹⁰ And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

¹¹ And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

¹⁴ Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon called Zelotes,

¹⁶ And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

¹⁷ And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judæa and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

³ Jesus wanted to show them that the record in Scriptures indicated that God permitted people to disobey certain religious laws when they needed food. So he replied, “ It is written in the Scriptures what our revered ancestor, King David did when he and the men with him were hungry. You have read about that, ◄ but you do not think about what it implies/so why do you not think about what it implies?► RHQ

⁴ David entered God's big worship tent and asked for some food. The high priest gave him the bread that the priests had presented to God. It was permitted in one of Moses' laws that only the priests could eat that bread. But even though David was not a priest, he ate some, and gave some to the men who were with him. And God did not consider that what David did was wrong!”

⁵ Jesus also said to them, “ I am the one who came from heaven, so I have the authority to determine what is right for my disciples to do on the day of rest!”

⁶ Another ◄Sabbath/Jewish day of rest► Jesus entered a ◄synagogue/Jewish meeting place► and taught the people. There was a man there whose right hand was shriveled.

⁷ The men who taught the Jewish laws and the Pharisees who were there watched Jesus, to see if he would heal the man ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►. They did this so that, if he healed the man, they would accuse him of disobeying their laws by working on the day of rest.

⁸ But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Come and stand here in front of everyone!” So the man got up and stood there.

⁹ Then Jesus said to the others, “I ask you this: Do the laws that God gave Moses permit people to do what is good ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►, or do they permit people to harm others? Do they permit us to save a person's life on our day of rest or to let him die HYP by refusing to help him?”

¹⁰ They refused to answer him. So after he looked around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your shriveled hand!” The man did that, and his hand became all right again!

¹¹ But the men who taught the Jewish laws and the Pharisees were very angry, and they discussed with one another what they could do to get rid of Jesus.

¹² About that time Jesus went up into the hills to pray. He prayed to God all night.

¹³ The next day he summoned all his disciples to come near him. From them he chose twelve men, whom he called apostles.

¹⁴ They were Simon, to whom he gave the new name, Peter; Andrew, Peter's younger brother; James and his younger brother, John; Philip; Bartholomew;

¹⁵ Matthew, whose other name was Levi; Thomas; another James, the son of Alpheus; Simon, who belonged to the party that encouraged people to rebel against the Roman government;

¹⁶ Judas, the son of another James; and Judas Iscariot (OR, Judas from the town of Kerioth), the one who later ◄betrayed Jesus./enabled the Jewish leaders to seize Jesus.►

¹⁷ Jesus came down from the hills with his disciples and stood on a level area. There was a very big crowd of his disciples there. There was also a large group of people who had come from Jerusalem and from many other places in Judea district, and from the coastal areas near Tyre and Sidon cities.

¹⁸ They came to hear Jesus talk to them and to be healed {and for him to heal them} from their diseases. He also healed those whom evil spirits had troubled.

¹⁹ Everyone in the crowd tried to touch him, because he was healing everyone by his/God's power.

²⁰ He looked MTY at his disciples and said, “ God is pleased with you who know that you lack what he wants you to have; he will allow you to be the people whose lives he rules over.

²¹ God is pleased with you who sincerely desire to receive what MTY he wants you to have; he will give you what you need, until you are satisfied. God is pleased with you that grieve now because of sin. Later you will be joyful.

²² God is pleased with you when other people hate you, when they will not let you join them, when they insult you, when they say that you are evil because you believe in me, the one who came from heaven.

³ Jesus, answering them, said, “Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,

⁴ how he entered into God’s house, and took and ate the show bread, and gave also to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?”

³ And Jesus said, Have you not seen in the Writings what David did when he was in need of food, he, and those who were with him;

⁴ How he went into the house of God and took for food the holy bread, which only the priests may take, and gave it to those who were with him?

⁵ And he said, The Son of man is lord even of the Sabbath.

⁶ And it came about, on another Sabbath, that he went into the Synagogue and was teaching there. And a man was there whose right hand was dead.

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees were watching him to see if he would make him well on the Sabbath, so that they might be able to say something against him.

⁸ But he had knowledge of their thoughts; and he said to the man whose hand was dead, Get up and come into the middle. And he got up and came forward.

⁹ And Jesus said, I put the question to you, Is it right to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil? to give life or to take it away?

¹⁰ And looking round on all of them, he said to him, Put out your hand. And he did so: and his hand was made well.

¹¹ But they were full of wrath, and were talking together about what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came about in those days that he went out to the mountain for prayer; and he was all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And the day came and, turning to his disciples, he made a selection from among them of twelve, to whom he gave the name of Apostles;

¹⁴ Simon, to whom he gave the name of Peter, and Andrew, his brother, and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew

¹⁵ And Matthew and Thomas and James, the son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was named the Zealot,

¹⁶ And Judas, the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, he who was false to him.

¹⁷ And he came down with them to a level place, and a great band of his disciples, and a very great number of people from all Judaea and Jerusalem and from the parts of Tyre and Sidon by the sea, came to give hearing to him, and to be made well from their diseases;

¹⁸ And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were made well.

¹⁹ And all the people were desiring to be touched by him, for power came from him and made them all well.

²⁰ And turning his eyes to his disciples he said, Happy are you who are poor: for the kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Happy are you who are in need of food now: for you will be made full. Happy are you who are weeping now; for you will be glad.

²² Happy are you, when men have hate for you, and put you away from among them and say angry words to you, turning away in disgust at your name, because of the Son of man.

¹⁸ and those that were beset by unclean spirits were healed.

¹⁹ And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power went out from him and healed all.

²⁰ And he, lifting up his eyes upon his disciples, said, Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And Jude, the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.

¹⁷ And coming down with them, he stood in a plain place, and the company of his disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon,

¹⁸ Who were come to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits, were cured.

¹⁹ And all the multitude sought to touch him, for virtue went out from him, and healed all.

⁴ how he entered into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees were observing if whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.

⁸ But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand in the midst.” And he arose and stood.

⁹ Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

¹⁷ And having come down with them, He stood on a level place, with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,

¹⁸ as well as those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were being healed.

¹⁹ And all the crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was going out from Him, and was healing them all.

²⁰ Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, For yours is the kingdom of God.

¹⁹ So the whole crowd kept trying to touch Him, because power was going out from Him and was healing all.

²⁰ Then He raised His eyes toward His disciples and said: “Blessed are you poor, because the Kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, because you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh.

²² Blessed are you whenever men hate you, and whenever they exclude you and heap insults on you and trash your name as ‘malignant’, for the Son of the Man's sake.

³ Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry?

⁴ How he went into the house of God and took the consecrated bread? He ate it, and gave it to his men too. That's not permitted either. The consecrated bread is only for the priests.”

⁵ Then he told them, “The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

⁶ On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue to teach. A man was there with a crippled right hand.

⁷ The religious teachers and the Pharisees were observing Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. They wanted to find something to accuse him of.

⁸ But Jesus knew what was in their minds. He told the man with the crippled hand, “Get up, and stand here in front of everyone.” The man got up and stood there.

⁹ Then Jesus turned to them and said, “Let me ask you a question. Is it legal to do good on the Sabbath, or to do bad? To save life, or to destroy it?”

¹⁰ He looked round at all of them there. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand became like new.

¹¹ But they flew into a rage, and began to discuss what they could do to Jesus.

¹² One day shortly after, Jesus went up a mountain to pray. He remained there all night, praying to God.

¹³ When morning came he called together his disciples, and chose twelve of them. These are the names of the apostles:

¹⁴ Simon (also called Peter by Jesus), Andrew his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Revolutionary,

¹⁶ Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot (who became a traitor).

¹⁷ Jesus went back down the mountain with them, and stopped at a place where there was some flat ground. There a crowd made up of his disciples and many other people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, had gathered to listen to him and to be cured from their diseases.

¹⁸ Those who were troubled by evil spirits were also healed.

¹⁹ Everyone in the crowd tried to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.

²⁰ Looking at his disciples, Jesus told them,

²¹ “How happy are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. How happy are you who are hungry now, for you will eat all you need. How happy are you who are weeping now, for you will laugh.

²² How happy are you when people hate you, exclude you, insult you, and curse your name as evil because of me, the Son of man.

³ Then Iesus answered them, and said, Haue ye not read this, that Dauid did when he himselfe was an hungred, and they which were with him,

⁴ Howe he went into the house of God, and tooke, and ate the shewbread, and gaue also to them which were with him, which was not lawful to eate, but for the Priests onely?

⁵ And he sayd vnto them, The Sonne of man is Lord also of the Sabbath day.

⁶ It came to passe also on another Sabbath, that hee entred into the Synagogue, and taught, and there was a man, whose right hand was dryed vp.

⁷ And the Scribes and Pharises watched him, whether he would heale on the Sabbath day, that they might finde an accusation against him.

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went vertue out of him, and healed them all.

¹⁷ Then Jesus came down the mountain with them and stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people from Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.

¹⁸ They had come to listen to him and to be healed of their diseases. People who were troubled with unclean spirits were also healed.

¹⁹ Everyone in the crowd kept trying to touch him because power to heal was coming out from him, and he healed them all.

²⁰ Then he looked at his disciples, and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

²² Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

³ Jesus, answering them, said, “Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,

⁴ how he entered into God’s house, and took and ate the show bread, and gave also to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?”

⁵ He said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

⁶ It also happened on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and taught. There was a man there, and his right hand was withered.

⁷ The scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise up and stand in the middle.” He arose and stood.

⁹ Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?”

¹⁰ He looked around at them all, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand was restored as sound as the other.

¹¹ But they were filled with rage, and talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus.

⁶ And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue, and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered:

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth.

⁹ Then said Jesus to them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it ?

¹⁰ And looking around upon them all, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

¹¹ And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out to a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And when it was day, he called to him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named Apostles;

¹⁴ Simon (whom he also named Peter) and Andrew his brother, James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes,

¹⁶ And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor.

¹⁷ And he came down with them, and stood in the plain; and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea-coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ And they that were afflicted with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him; for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company , and shall reproach you , and cast out your name as evil, on account of the son of man.

¹² And it was done in those days, he went out into an hill to pray; and he was all night dwelling in the prayer of God.

¹⁸ and they that were travailed of or with unclean spirits, were healed.

¹⁹ And all the people sought to touch him, for virtue went out of him, and healed all.

²⁰ And when his eyes were cast up, into his disciples, he said, Blessed be ye, poor men or poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Blessed be ye, that now hunger, for ye shall be full-filled. Blessed be ye, that now weep, for ye shall laugh. Blessed be ye, that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed be ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

²² Ye shall be blessed, when men shall hate you, and separate you away, and put reproof to you or shall put shame on you, and cast out your name as evil, for man’s Son.

³ And Jesus answered, and said to them, Have ye not read, what David did, when he hungered, and they that were with him;

⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and took (the) loaves of proposition, and ate (them), and gave to them that were with him; which loaves it was not leaveful to eat, (no) but only to priests or no but to priests alone. (how he entered into God’s House, and took the loaves of the showbread, and ate them, and gave them to those who were with him; whichbread it was not lawful to eat, except for the priests.)

⁶ And it was done in another sabbath (or on another Sabbath), that he entered into a synagogue, and taught. And a man was there, and his right hand was dry.

⁷ And the scribes and the Pharisees espied him, if he would heal him in the sabbath (or if he would heal him on the Sabbath), (so) that they should find cause, whereof they should accuse him.

⁸ And he knew the thoughts of them, and he said to the man that had a dry hand, Rise up, and stand in the middle (of us). And he rose, and stood (there).

⁹ And Jesus said to them, I ask you, if it is leaveful to do well in the sabbath day, or evil? to make a soul safe, or to lose? (And Jesus said to them, I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath day, or evil? to save a life, or a soul, or to destroy it?)

¹⁰ And when he had beheld all men about, he said to the man, Hold forth thine hand. And he held (it) forth, and his hand was restored to health.

¹¹ And they were full-filled with unwisdom or Soothly they were filled with unwisdom, and spake together, what they should do of Jesus (or what they would do about Jesus).

¹⁷ And Jesus came down from the hill with them, and stood in a field place; and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people, of all Judea, and Jerusalem, and of the sea coasts, and of Tyre and Sidon, (or from all of Judea, and Jerusalem, and from the sea coasts, and from Tyre and Sidon), that came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses;

¹⁸ and they that were travailed of or with unclean spirits, were healed. (and those who were troubled by unclean spirits, or devils and demons, were healed.)

¹⁹ And all the people sought to touch him, for virtue went out of him (or for power went out of him), and healed all.

²⁰ And when his eyes were cast up, into his disciples, he said, (or And he turned his eyes upon his disciples, and he said), Blessed be ye, poor men +or Blessed be ye, (the) poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Blessed be ye, that now hunger, for ye shall be full-filled. Blessed be ye, that now weep, for ye shall laugh. Blessed be ye that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed be ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

³ And Jhesus answeride, and seide to hem, Han ye not redde, what Dauith dide, whanne he hungride, and thei that weren with hym;

⁴ hou he entride in to the hous of God, and took looues of proposicioun, and eet, and yaf to hem that weren with hem; whiche looues it was not leeueful to eete, but oonli to prestis.

⁵ And he seide to hem, For mannus sone is lord, yhe, of the sabat.

⁶ And it was don in another sabat, that he entride in to a synagoge, and tauyte. And a man was there, and his riyt hoond was drie.

⁷ And the scribis and Farisees aspieden hym, if he wolde heele hym in the sabat, that thei schulden fynde cause, whereof thei schulden accuse hym.

⁸ And he wiste the thouytis of hem, and he seide to the man that hadde a drie hoond, Rise vp, and stonde in to the myddil. And he roos, and stood.

⁹ And Jhesus seide to hem, Y axe you, if it is leueful to do wel in the sabat, or yuel? to make a soule saaf, or to leese?

¹⁰ And whanne he hadde biholde alle men aboute, he seide to the man, Hold forth thin hoond. And he held forth, and his hond was restorid to helthe.

¹¹ And thei weren fulfillid with vnwisdom, and spaken togidir, what thei schulden do of Jhesu.

¹² And it was don in tho daies, he wente out in to an hil to preye; and he was al nyyt dwellynge in the preier of God.

¹³ And whanne the day was come, he clepide hise disciplis, and chees twelue of hem, whiche he clepide also apostlis;

¹⁴ Symount, whom he clepide Petir, and Andrew, his brothir, James and Joon,

¹⁵ Filip and Bartholomew, Matheu and Thomas, James Alphei, and Symount, that is clepid Zelotes,

¹⁶ Judas of James, and Judas Scarioth, that was traytoure.

¹⁷ And Jhesus cam doun fro the hil with hem, and stood in a feeldi place; and the cumpeny of hise disciplis, and a greet multitude of puple, of al Judee, and Jerusalem, and of the see coostis, and of Tyre and Sidon,

¹⁸ that camen to here hym, and to be heelid of her siknessis; and thei that weren trauelid of vncleene spiritis, weren heelid.

¹⁹ And al puple souyte to touche hym, for vertu wente out of hym, and heelide alle.

²⁰ And whanne hise iyen weren cast vp in to hise disciplis, he seide, Blessid be ye, `pore men, for the kyngdom of God is youre.

²¹ Blessid be ye, that now hungren, for ye schulen be fulfillid. Blessid be ye, that now wepen, for ye schulen leiye.

²² Ye schulen be blessid, whanne men schulen hate you, and departe you awei, and putte schenschip to you, and cast out youre name as yuel, for mannus sone.

³ And Jesus answering said unto them, 'Did ye not read even this that David did, when he hungered, himself and those who are with him,

⁴ how he went into the house of God, and the loaves of the presentation did take, and did eat, and gave also to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat, except only to the priests?'

⁵ and he said to them, — 'The Son of Man is lord also of the sabbath.'

⁶ And it came to pass also, on another sabbath, that he goeth into the synagogue, and teacheth, and there was there a man, and his right hand was withered,

⁷ and the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, if on the sabbath he will heal, that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ And he himself had known their reasonings, and said to the man having the withered hand, 'Rise, and stand in the midst;' and he having risen, stood.

⁹ Then said Jesus unto them, 'I will question you something: Is it lawful on the sabbaths to do good, or to do evil? life to save or to kill?'

¹⁰ And having looked round on them all, he said to the man, 'Stretch forth thy hand;' and he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other;

¹¹ and they were filled with madness, and were speaking with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, he went forth to the mountain to pray, and was passing the night in the prayer of God,

¹³ and when it became day, he called near his disciples, and having chosen from them twelve, whom also he named apostles,

¹⁴ (Simon, whom also he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

¹⁶ Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became betrayer;)

¹⁷ and having come down with them, he stood upon a level spot, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses,

¹⁸ and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were healed,

¹⁹ and all the multitude were seeking to touch him, because power from him was going forth, and he was healing all.

²⁰ And he, having lifted up his eyes to his disciples, said: 'Happy the poor — because yours is the reign of God.

²¹ 'Happy those hungering now — because ye shall be filled. 'Happy those weeping now — because ye shall laugh.

²² 'Happy are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach, and shall cast forth your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake —
