Luke 24:9-42 in English

⁹ and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

¹⁰ Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles.

¹¹ And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them.

¹² But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

¹³ And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

¹⁹ And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.

²² Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;

²³ and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

²⁵ And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.

²⁹ And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking it he gave to them.

³¹ And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

³² And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while he opened to us the scriptures?

³³ And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

³⁴ saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

³⁵ And they rehearsed the things that happened in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.

³⁶ And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

³⁷ But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit.

³⁸ And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart?

³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having.

⁴⁰ And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?

⁴² And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish.

⁹ So they left the tomb and went to the eleven apostles and his other disciples and told them those things.

¹⁰ The ones who kept telling those things to the apostles were Mary from Magdala village, Joanna, Mary who was the mother of James, and the other women who were with them.

¹¹ But the apostles thought that what the women said was nonsense. They did not believe what the women said.

¹² But Peter got up and ran to the tomb anyway. He stooped down and looked inside. He saw the linen cloths in which Jesus' body had been wrapped. The cloths were by themselves (OR, He did not see anything else). So, wondering what had happened, he went home.

¹³ That same day two of Jesus' disciples were walking to a village named Emmaus. It was about ◄seven miles/eleven kilometers► from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ They were talking with each other about all the things that had happened to Jesus.

¹⁵ While they were discussing those things, Jesus himself approached them and started walking with them.

¹⁶ But they were prevented { something prevented them} from recognizing MTY him.

¹⁷ Jesus said to them, “What have you two been talking about while you were walking?” They stopped, and their faces looked very sad.

¹⁸ One of them, whose name was Cleopas, said, “◄You (sg) must be the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days!/Are you the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days?► RHQ”

¹⁹ He said to them, “What events?” They replied, “ The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth, who was a prophet. Many people saw him perform great miracles, and God enabled him to teach wonderful messages!

²⁰ But our chief priests and leaders handed him over to the Roman authorities. The authorities sentenced him to die, and they killed him by nailing him to a cross.

²¹ We (exc) were hoping that he was the one who would free us Israelites from our enemies But this does not seem possible now, because three days have already passed since that happened.

²² On the other hand, some women from our group amazed us. Early this morning they went to the tomb,

²³ but Jesus' body was not there! They came back and said that they had seen some angels in a vision. The angels said that he was alive!

²⁴ Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb. They saw that things were exactly as the women had reported. But they did not see Jesus.”

²⁵ He said to them, “ You two foolish men! You are so slow to believe all that the prophets have written about the Messiah!

²⁶ ◄ You should certainly have known that it was necessary that the Messiah should suffer all those things and die, and then enter his glorious home in heaven!/Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer all those things and die, and then enter his glorious home in heaven?► RHQ”

²⁷ Then he explained to them all the things that the prophets had written in the Scriptures about himself. He started with what Moses MTY wrote and then explained to them what all the other prophets wrote.

²⁸ They came near to the village to which the two men were going. Jesus indicated that he would go further,

²⁹ but they urged him to not do that. They said, “Stay with us tonight, because it is late in the afternoon and it will soon be dark.” So he went in the house to stay with them.

³⁰ When they sat down to eat, he took some bread and asked God to bless it. He broke it and gave some pieces to them.

³¹ And just then God enabled them to recognize MTY him. But immediately he disappeared!

³² The two men said to each other, “ While we were walking along the road and he talked with us and enabled us (inc) to understand the Scriptures, we became so excited that it was as though MET a fire was burning within us RHQ! We should not stay here; we should go tell the others what happened!”

³³ So they left immediately and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven apostles and others who had gathered together with them

³⁴ who told those two men, “It is true that the Lord has become alive again, and he has appeared to Peter!”

³⁵ Then those two men told the others what had happened as they were walking along the road. They also told them how they both recognized Jesus as he broke some bread for them.

³⁶ As they were saying that, Jesus himself suddenly appeared among them. He said to them, “ May God give you inner peace!”

³⁷ They were startled and afraid, because they thought that they were seeing a ghost!

³⁸ He said to them, “◄You should not be alarmed!/Why are you alarmed?► RHQ And ◄you should not be doubting that I am alive/Jesus!/why are you doubting that I am alive/Jesus?► RHQ

³⁹ Look at the wounds in my hands and my feet! You can touch me and see my body. Then you can see that it is really I myself. You can tell that I am really alive because ghosts do not have bodies, as you see that I have!”

⁴⁰ After he said that, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ They were joyful and amazed, but they still did not believe that he was really alive (OR, that Jesus was the one that they were seeing). So he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

⁴² So they gave him a piece of broiled fish.

¹⁹ He said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

²² Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;

²³ and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ Some of us went to the tomb and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

²⁵ He said to them, “Foolish people, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ They came near to the village where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

²⁹ They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over.” He went in to stay with them.

³⁰ When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave it to them.

³¹ Their eyes were opened and they recognised him; then he vanished out of their sight.

³² They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”

³³ They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,

³⁴ saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”

³⁵ They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognised by them in the breaking of the bread.

³⁶ As they said these things, Jesus himself stood amongst them, and said to them, “Peace be to you.”

³⁷ But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

³⁸ He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”

⁴⁰ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

⁴² They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.

⁹ And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.

¹⁰ Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles.

¹¹ But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them.

¹² But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place.

¹³ And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place.

¹⁵ And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go?

¹⁸ Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time?

¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people:

²⁰ And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross.

²¹ But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place;

²² And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put,

²³ And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living.

²⁴ And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see.

²⁵ And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said.

²⁶ Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory?

²⁷ And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself.

²⁸ And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on;

²⁹ But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them.

³⁰ And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them.

³¹ And then their eyes were open, and they had knowledge of him, but he went from their view.

³² And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning in us while he was talking to us on the way, making clear to us the holy Writings?

³³ And that very hour they got up and went back to Jerusalem, where the eleven and the others had come together.

³⁴ And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him.

³⁵ And they gave an account of the things which had taken place on the way, and how, when he gave them bread, they had knowledge of him.

³⁶ And while they were saying these things, he himself was among them, and said to them, Peace be with you!

³⁷ But they were full of fear, being of the opinion that they were seeing a spirit.

³⁸ And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why are your hearts full of doubt?

³⁹ See; my hands and my feet: it is I myself; put your hands on me and make certain; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.

⁴⁰ And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ And because, for joy and wonder, they were still in doubt, he said to them, Have you any food here?

⁴² And they gave him a bit of cooked fish.

⁹ and, returning from the sepulchre, related all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

¹⁴ and they conversed with one another about all these things which had taken place.

¹⁵ And it came to pass as they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus himself drawing nigh, went with them;

¹⁶ but their eyes were holden so as not to know him.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What discourses are these which pass between you as ye walk, and are downcast?

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said to him, Thou sojournest alone in Jerusalem, and dost not know what has taken place in it in these days?

¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazaraean, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to the judgment of death and crucified him.

²¹ But we had hoped that he was the one who is about to redeem Israel. But then, besides all these things, it is now, to-day, the third day since these things took place.

²² And withal, certain women from amongst us astonished us, having been very early at the sepulchre,

²³ and, not having found his body, came, saying that they also had seen a vision of angels, who say that he is living.

²⁴ And some of those with us went to the sepulchre, and found it so, as the women also had said, but him they saw not.

²⁵ And he said to them, O senseless and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory?

³¹ And their eyes were opened, and they recognised him. And he disappeared from them.

³² And they said to one another, Was not our heart burning in us as he spoke to us on the way, and as he opened the scriptures to us?

³³ And rising up the same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven, and those with them, gathered together,

³⁴ saying, The Lord is indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?

¹⁹ To whom he said: What things? And they said: Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, mighty in work and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ And how our chief priests and princes delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we hoped, that it was he that should have redeemed Israel: and now besides all this, today is the third day since these things were done.

¹⁶ But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not recognize Him.

¹⁷ And He said to them, “What are these words which you are exchanging with one another as you walk, and you have a gloomy look?”

¹⁸ Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and do not know what has happened in it in these days?”

¹⁹ And He said to them, “What things?” So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a man who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

³⁴ who said, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”

³⁵ Then they described what happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

³⁸ And He said to them: “Why are you troubled?” and “Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

⁴⁰ And saying this He showed them His hands and His feet.

⁴¹ But as they were still disbelieving and marveling, because of the joy, He said to them, “Do you have any food here?”

¹² However, Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Bending down, he looked in and saw only the linen grave-clothes. So he went back home, wondering what had happened.

¹³ The same day two disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ They were talking about all that had happened.

¹⁵ As they discussed and debated, Jesus came up and fell into step with them.

¹⁶ But they were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷ “What are you discussing as you walk along?” he asked them. They stopped, their faces sad.

¹⁸ One of them, called Cleopas, replied, “Are you just visiting Jerusalem? You must be the only person who doesn't know the things that have happened in the past few days.”

¹⁹ “What things?” Jesus asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet who spoke powerfully and performed great miracles before God and all the people.

²⁰ But our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.

²¹ We had hoped he was the one who was going to rescue Israel. It's been three days now since all this happened.

²² But then some of the women in our group surprised us.

²³ At dawn they went to the tomb and they didn't find his body. They came back saying that they'd seen a vision of angels who told them he's alive.

²⁴ Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women said—but they didn't see him.”

²⁵ Jesus told them, “You're so dull! How slow you are to trust in all that the prophets said!

²⁶ Didn't the Messiah have to suffer before he could enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Then, starting with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them everything that was said in Scripture about himself.

²⁸ As they approached the village they were going to, Jesus made it seem as if he was going farther.

²⁹ But they urged him, saying, “Please come and stay with us. It's getting late—the day is almost over.” So he went to stay with them.

³⁰ When he sat down to eat with them, he took the bread and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.

³¹ Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. Then he disappeared from view.

³² The two disciples said to each other, “Weren't our thoughts on fire when he spoke to us, as he explained the Scriptures to us?”

³³ They got up right away and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and those who were with them meeting together,

³⁴ who said, “The Lord has really risen again! He has appeared to Simon.”

³⁵ Then those who had just arrived explained to the other disciples what had happened to them on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus when he broke bread.

³⁶ While they were talking, Jesus himself stood among them, and said, “Peace to you!”

³⁷ They were startled and afraid, thinking they were seeing a ghost.

³⁸ “Why are you frightened? Why are you doubting?” he asked them.

³⁹ “Look at my hands and my feet—you can see it's me. Touch me and you'll be certain, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

⁴⁰ Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

⁴¹ But they still couldn't believe it because they were so elated and amazed. He asked them, “Do you have anything to eat?”

⁴² They gave him a piece of cooked fish,

⁹ And returned from the sepulchre, and tolde all these things vnto the eleuen, and to all the remnant.

¹⁰ Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Ioanna, and Mary the mother of Iames, and other women with them, which tolde these things vnto the Apostles.

¹¹ But their wordes seemed vnto them, as a fained thing, neither beleeued they them.

¹² Then arose Peter, and ran vnto the sepulchre, and looked in, and saw the linnen clothes laide by themselues, and departed wondering in himselfe at that which was come to passe.

¹⁷ And he sayd vnto them, What maner of communications are these that ye haue one to another as ye walke and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one (named Cleopas) answered, and sayd vnto him, Art thou onely a stranger in Hierusalem, and hast not knowen the things which are come to passe therein in these dayes?

¹⁹ And he said vnto them, What things? And they sayd vnto him, Of Iesus of Nazareth, which was a Prophet, mightie in deede and in word before God, and all people,

²⁰ And howe the hie Priests, and our rulers deliuered him to be condemned to death, and haue crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it had bene he that should haue deliuered Israel, and as touching all these things, to day is ye third day, that they were done.

²² Yea, and certaine women among vs made vs astonied, which came early vnto the sepulchre.

²³ And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seene a vision of Angels, which sayd, that he was aliue.

²⁴ Therefore certaine of them which were with vs, went to the sepulchre, and found it euen so as the women had sayd, but him they saw not.

²⁸ And they drew neere vnto ye towne, which they went to, but he made as though hee would haue gone further.

²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with vs: for it is towards night, and the day is farre spent. So he went in to tarie with them.

³⁰ And it came to passe, as hee sate at table with them, he tooke the bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gaue it to them.

³¹ Then their eyes were opened, and they knewe him: and he was no more seene of them.

³² And they saide betweene themselues, Did not our heartes burne within vs, while he talked with vs by the way, and when he opened to vs the Scriptures?

³³ And they rose vp the same houre, and returned to Hierusalem, and found the Eleuen gathered together, and them that were with them,

³⁴ Which said, The Lord is risen in deede, and hath appeared to Simon.

³⁵ Then they tolde what things were done in the way, and howe he was knowen of them in breaking of bread.

³⁶ And as they spake these things, Iesus himselfe stoode in the middes of them, and saide vnto them, Peace be to you.

³⁷ But they were abashed and afraide, supposing that they had seene a spirit.

³⁸ Then he saide vnto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore doe doutes arise in your hearts?

³⁹ Beholde mine handes and my feete: for it is I my selfe: handle me, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me haue.

⁴⁰ And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and feete.

⁴¹ And while they yet beleeued not for ioy, and wondred, he saide vnto them, Haue ye here any meate?

⁴² And they gaue him a piece of a broyled fish, and of an honie combe,

⁹ and returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

¹¹ And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

¹² Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

¹³ And behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

¹⁴ And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, that while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

¹⁹ And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

²² Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

²³ and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

²⁴ And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

²⁵ Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

²⁶ ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is towards evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

³¹ And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

³² And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

³³ And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

³⁴ saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

³⁵ And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

³⁶ And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

³⁷ But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

³⁸ And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

³⁹ Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What discourse is this which ye have one with another, as ye are walking? And they stood sad.

¹⁸ And one, whose name was Cleopas, answering said to him, Art thou the only sojourner in Jerusalem that doth not know the things which have come to pass there in these days?

¹⁹ And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, The things relating to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in word and deed before God and all the people;

¹⁸ and then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to Jesus, “Are you staying by yourself at Jerusalem, that you have not heard of the things that have happened there within the last few days?”

¹⁹ “What things do you mean?” asked Jesus. “Why, about Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered, “who, in the eyes of God and all the people, was a prophet, whose power was felt in both his words and actions;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our leading men gave him up to be sentenced to death, and afterward crucified him.

²¹ But we were hoping that he was the Destined Deliverer of Israel; yes, and besides all this, it is now three days since these things occurred.

²² And what is more, some of the women amongst us have greatly astonished us. They went to the tomb at daybreak

²³ And, not finding the body of Jesus there, came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he was alive.

²⁴ So some of our number went to the tomb and found everything just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

²⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “Foolish men, slow to accept all that the prophets have said!

²⁶ Was not the Christ bound to undergo this suffering before entering into his glory?”

²⁷ Then, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them all through the scriptures the passages that referred to himself.

²⁸ When they got near the village to which they were walking, Jesus appeared to be going further;

²⁹ but they pressed him not to do so. “Stay with us,” they said, “for it is getting towards evening, and the sun in already low.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.

³⁰ After he had taken his place at the table with them, he took the bread and said the blessing, and broke it, and gave it to them.

³¹ Then their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he disappeared from their sight.

³² “How our hearts glowed,” the disciples said to each other, “while he was talking to us on the road, and when he explained the scriptures to us!”

³³ Then they immediately got up and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and their companions all together,

³⁴ who told them that the Master had really risen, and had appeared to Simon.

³⁵ So they also related what had happened during their walk, and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of the bread.

³⁶ While they were still talking about these things, Jesus himself stood amongst them.

³⁸ but Jesus said to them, “Why are you so startled? And why do doubts arise in your minds?

¹² But Peter Rock got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened.

¹³ Behold, two of them were going that same day (Nissan 17) to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia 7.93 mi; 11.1 km from Jerusalem City of peace.

¹⁴ They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.

¹⁵ While they talked and questioned together, Yeshua Salvation himself came near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷ He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem City of peace who does not know the things which have happened there in these days?”

¹⁹ He said to them, “What things?” They said to him, “The things concerning Yeshua Salvation, the Nazarene person from Branch, Separated one, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and nailed him to the stake.

²¹ But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel God prevails. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.

²² Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;

²³ and when they didn’t find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

²⁴ Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”

²⁶ Didn’t the Messiah Anointed one have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Beginning from Moses Drawn out and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

²⁸ They came near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

²⁹ They urged him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over. (Finish of Nissan 17, nearing to the start of Nissan 18.)” He went in to stay with them.

³⁰ When he had sat down at the table with them, he took the matzah ·unleavened bread· and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.

³¹ Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.

³² They said to one another, “Did not our hearts burn within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”

³³ They rose up that very hour, teshuvah ·completely returned· to Jerusalem City of peace, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,

³⁴ saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simeon Hearing!”

³⁵ They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the matzah ·unleavened bread·.

³⁶ As they said these things, Yeshua Salvation himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be to you; Ena Na I AM (the Living God), do not be afraid.”

³⁸ He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.”

⁴⁰ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

¹³ Later, on that same day, 2 of Jesus’s followers walked from Jerusalem to a community called Emmaus. That was about 11 kilometers.

¹⁴ As they walked along the road they talked about everything that happened.

¹⁵ Then suddenly Jesus came and joined up with them, but they didn’t know it was Jesus. God blocked their eyes a bit, so they couldn’t see who he was. Jesus walked along with them and listened to what they said to each other,

¹⁷ then he asked them, “What is this thing you are talking about so much, as you walk along the road?” When they heard him say that they both stopped, and they looked very sad.

¹⁸ Then one of them, called Cleopas, said, “I reckon you are the only visitor to Jerusalem that hasn’t heard about the things that happened here in the last few days.”

¹⁹ Jesus asked him, “What things?” They said, “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth. God gave him the power to tell his messages, and to teach people his words, and to do powerful things. All the people reckoned he was great.

²⁰ But our bosses, and the leaders of our ceremonies, they didn’t want him. They grabbed him and gave him to the Roman soldiers, and told them to kill him, so they nailed him to a cross and he died.

²¹ But, you know, we were hoping he will save us Israel people, but he can’t do that now. And all of that happened 3 days ago.

²² And now, today, some of our women gave us a shock. They went to his grave early this morning, to look for his body,

²³ but they couldn’t find it. His body wasn’t in that grave. They came back and told us they saw some of God’s angel messengers, and those angels said that he is alive.

²⁴ And some of our men went to that grave, and they saw that everything was just like the women said. His body was not in the grave.”

²⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “You 2 are a bit stupid. You don’t properly believe the messages that God’s men told us a long time ago.

²⁶ You see, they told us about the special man God was going to send to us. They made it real clear. They said he will get this kind of trouble, and he will die, but then God will show everyone that he is really great.”

²⁷ Then Jesus told them all the words in God’s book that tell about him. He made it very clear to them. He started with the words that Moses wrote, and he also told them the words that God’s other men wrote.

²⁸ They kept walking along as Jesus talked to them, and they came to Emmaus, the place those 2 men were going to stay. Jesus was starting to keep going on that road,

²⁹ but those 2 said, “Hey, you can’t keep going to another place. It’s too late. The sun is going down. Please stay here with us tonight.” So he went with them to their house.

³⁰ The 3 of them sat down at the table to have a feed, and Jesus picked up some bread and said thank you to God for it, and he broke it into bits and gave it to them.

³¹ Then suddenly God stopped blocking their eyes so they could see properly, and they saw that it was Jesus talking to them. Then, as soon as they knew who he was, they couldn’t see him any more. He was gone.

³² They said to each other, “Wow. That’s why we felt really good and excited when he talked to us on the road, and he made God’s book really clear for us.”

³³ Then they got up straight away, and they went back to Jerusalem. They went to see the 11 close followers of Jesus. There were other followers of Jesus at that place, too.

³⁴ They were all talking together and saying, “Yes, Jesus really is alive again. He showed himself to Simon.”

³⁵ Then the 2 men from Emmaus told the others their story. They told them what happened on the road, and that they suddenly saw it was Jesus while he was breaking the bread.

³⁶ While they were still telling their story, suddenly Jesus was standing right there in the middle of the group. He said to them, “Hello. I hope you feel good and quiet inside yourselves.”

³⁷ They were all shocked and frightened. They thought they were looking at a spirit.

³⁸ But Jesus said to them, “Why are you frightened? Why do you think, ‘This can’t be Jesus’? Look, it is me.

³⁹ Look at my hands and my feet. See the holes made by the nails. Touch me, to make sure I’m not a spirit. Spirits haven’t got bodies with bones in them, like I have.”

⁴⁰ After he said that, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ They were so shocked they could hardly believe it really was Jesus, but they were really happy too. Then Jesus asked them, “Have you got anything here for me to eat?”

⁴² So they gave him a piece of cooked fish.

⁹ and returned from the sepulcre and tolde all these thinges vnto the eleven and to all the remanaunt.

¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalen and Ioanna and Mary Iacobi and other that were with the which tolde these thinges vnto the Apostles

¹¹ and their wordes semed vnto them fayned thinges nether beleved they them.

¹² Then aroose Peter and ran vnto the sepulcre and stouped in and sawe the lynnen cloothes layde by them selfe and departed wondrynge in him selfe at that which had happened.

¹³ And beholde two of them went that same daye to a toune which was from Ierusalem about thre scoore for longes called Emaus:

¹⁴ and they talked togeder of all these thinges that had happened.

¹⁵ And it chaunsed as they commened togeder and reasoned that Iesus him selfe drue neare and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden that they coulde not knowe him.

¹⁷ And he sayde vnto them: What maner of communicacions are these that ye have one to another as ye walke and are sadde.

¹⁸ And the one of them named Cleophas answered and sayd vnto him: arte thou only a straunger in Ierusalem and haste not knowen the thinges which have chaunsed therin in these dayes?

¹⁹ To whom he sayd: what thinges? And they sayd vnto him: of Iesus of Nazareth which was a Prophet myghtie in dede and worde before god and all the people.

²⁰ And how the hye prestes and oure rulers delyvered him to be condempned to deeth: and have crucified him.

²¹ But we trusted that it shuld have bene he that shuld have delyvered Israel. And as touchynge all these thinges to daye is even the thyrd daye that they were done.

²³ and founde not his boddy: and came sayinge that they had sene a vision of angels which sayde that he was alyve.

²⁵ And he sayde vnto the: O foles and slowe of herte to beleve all that the prophetes have spoken.

²⁹ But they constrayned him sayinge: abyde with vs for it draweth towardes nyght and the daye is farre passed. And he went in to tary with them.

³⁰ And it came to passe as he sate at meate with them he toke breed blessed it brake and gave to them.

³¹ And their eyes were openned and they knewe him: and he vnnisshed out of their syght.

³² And they sayde betwene them selves: dyd not oure hertes burne with in vs whyll he talked with vs by the waye and as he opened to vs the scriptures?

³³ And they roose vp the same houre and returned agayne to Ierusalem and founde the eleven gadered to geder and them that were with them

³⁴ which sayde: the Lorde is rysen in dede and hath apered to Simon.

³⁵ And they tolde what thinges was done in the waye and how they knewe him in breakynge of breed.

³⁶ As they thus spake Iesus him selfe stode in the myddes of them and sayde vnto them: peace be with you.

³⁷ And they were abasshed and afrayde supposinge that they had sene a sprete

³⁸ And he sayde vnto them: Why are ye troubled and why do thoughtes aryse in youre hertes?

³⁹ Beholde my hondes and my fete that it is even my selfe. Handle me and se: for spretes have not flesshe and bones as ye se me have.

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only person in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have happened there these days?”

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, “What things?” They answered him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet, mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

²⁰ and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death and crucified him.

²¹ But we had confidence that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. Yes, and what is more, it is now the third day since all these things happened.

²² But also, some women of our company amazed us, having been at the tomb early in the morning.

²³ When they did not find his body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.

²⁴ Some men who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said. But they did not see him.”

²⁵ Jesus said to them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

²⁶ Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?”

²⁷ Then beginning from Moses and through all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.

²⁸ As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as though he were going further.

²⁹ But they compelled him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is almost over.” So Jesus went in to stay with them.

³⁰ It happened that, when he had sat down with them to eat, he took the bread, blessed it, and breaking it, he gave it to them.

³¹ Then their eyes were opened, and they knew him, and he vanished out of their sight.

³² They said one to another, “Was not our heart burning within us, while he spoke to us on the way, while he opened to us the scriptures?”

³³ They rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem. They found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,

³⁴ saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.”

³⁵ So they told the things that happened on the way, and how Jesus was shown to them in the breaking of the bread.

³⁶ As they spoke these things, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace be to you.”

³⁷ But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they saw a spirit.

³⁸ Jesus said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do questions arise in your heart?

³⁹ See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see me having.”

⁴⁰ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

⁴¹ They still could not believe it because of joy, and they were amazed. Jesus said to them, “Do you have anything to eat?”

⁴² They gave him a piece of a broiled fish,

¹⁵ And it was done, the while they talked, and sought by themselves, Jesus himself nighed, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden, that they knew him not.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What be these words, that ye speak together wandering, and ye be sorrowful?

¹⁸ And one, whose name was Cleopas, answered, and said to him, Thou thyself art a pilgrim in Jerusalem, and hast thou not known, what things be done in it in these days?

²⁰ and how the high priests and our princes betook him into condemnation or into damnation of death, and crucified him.

²¹ But we hoped, that he should have again-bought Israel. And now on all these things the third day is today, that these things were done.

²² But also some women of ours made us afeared, which before day-light were at the grave;

²³ and when his body was not found, they came, and said, that they saw also a sight of angels, which said, that he liveth.

²⁴ And some men of ours went to the grave, and they found so as the women said, but they found not him.

³² And they said together, Whether our heart was not burning in us, while he spake to us in the way, and he opened to us the scriptures? (And they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning in us, while he spoke to us on the way, and he opened the Scriptures to us?)

³³ And they rose up in the same hour, and went again into Jerusalem or (and) went again to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, (And they rose up at once, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the Eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,)

³⁴ saying, That the Lord is risen verily, and appeared to Simon. (and they were saying, Truly the Lord hath risen, or It is true that the Lord hath risen, and hath appeared to Simon.)

³⁵ And they told what things were done in the way (or And then they told them what had happened on the way), and how they knew him in (the) breaking of (the) bread.

³⁶ And while they spake these things, Jesus stood in the middle of them, and said to them, Peace (be) to you; I am (here), do not ye dread. (And while they spoke of these things, suddenly Jesus stood in their midst, and said to them, Peace be to you; I am here, do not fear, or do not be afraid.)

³⁷ But they were afraid and aghast, and guessed them(selves) to see a spirit.

³⁸ And he said to them, What be ye troubled (or Why be ye troubled), and thoughts come up into your hearts?

³⁹ See ye my hands and my feet, for I myself am (or for I am here). Feel ye, and see ye; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see that I have.

⁴⁰ And when he had said this thing, he showed (his) hands and feet to them.

⁴¹ And yet while they believed not, and wondered for joy, he said, Have ye here anything that shall be eaten? or Have ye anything here that shall be eaten?

⁴² And they proffered to him a part of a fish roasted, and an honeycomb. And they offered to him a part of a fish roasted, and a comb of honey.

⁹ And thei yeden ayen fro the graue, and telden alle these thingis to the enleuene, and to alle othir.

¹⁰ And ther was Marie Mawdeleyn, and Joone, and Marie of James, and other wymmen that weren with hem, that seiden to apostlis these thingis.

¹¹ And these wordis weren seyn bifor hem as madnesse, and thei bileueden not to hem.

¹² But Petir roos vp, and ran to the graue; and he bowide doun, and say the lynen clothis liynge aloone. And he wente bi him silf, wondrynge on that that was don.

¹³ And lo! tweyne of hem wenten in that dai in to a castel, that was fro Jerusalem the space of sixti furlongis, bi name Emaws.

¹⁴ And thei spaken togidir of alle these thingis that haddun bifallun.

¹⁵ And it was don, the while thei talkiden, and souyten bi hem silf, Jhesus hym silf neiyede, and wente with hem.

¹⁶ But her iyen weren holdun, that thei knewen him not.

¹⁷ And he seide to hem, What ben these wordis, that ye speken togidir wandrynge, and ye ben sorewful?

¹⁸ And oon, whos name was Cleofas, answerde, and seide, Thou thi silf art a pilgrym in Jerusalem, and hast thou not knowun, what thingis ben don in it in these daies?

¹⁹ To whom he seide, What thingis? And thei seiden to hym, Of Jhesu of Nazareth, that was a man prophete, myyti in werk and word bifor God and al the puple;

²⁰ and hou the heiyest preestis of oure princis bitoken hym in to dampnacioun of deeth, and crucifieden hym.

²¹ But we hopiden, that he schulde haue ayenbouyt Israel. And now on alle these thingis the thridde dai is to dai, that these thingis weren don.

²² But also summe wymmen of ouris maden vs afered, whiche bifor dai weren at the graue; and whanne his bodi was not foundun,

²³ thei camen, and seiden, that thei syen also a siyt of aungels, whiche seien, that he lyueth.

²⁴ And summe of oure wenten to the graue, and thei founden so as the wymmen seiden, but thei founden not hym.

²⁵ And he seide to hem, A! foolis, and slowe of herte to bileue in alle thingis that the prophetis han spokun.

²⁶ Whethir it bihofte not Crist to suffre these thingis, and so to entre in to his glorie?

²⁷ And he bigan at Moises and at alle the prophetis, and declaride to hem in alle scripturis, that weren of hym.

²⁸ And thei camen nyy the castel, whidur thei wenten. And he made countenaunce that he wolde go ferthere.

²⁹ And thei constreyneden hym, and seiden, Dwelle with vs, for it drawith to nyyt, and the dai is now bowid doun.

³⁰ And he entride with hem. And it was don, while he sat at the mete with hem, he took breed, and blesside, and brak, and took to hem.

³¹ And the iyen of hem weren openyd, and thei knewen hym; and he vanyschide fro her iyen.

³² And thei seiden togidir, Whether oure herte was not brennynge in vs, while he spak in the weie, and openyde to vs scripturis?

³³ And thei risen vp in the same our, and wenten ayen in to Jerusalem, and founden the enleuene gaderid togidir, and hem that weren with hem,

³⁴ seiynge, That the Lord is risun verrili, and apperide to Symount.

³⁵ And thei tolden what thingis weren don in the weie, and hou thei knewen hym in brekyng of breed.

³⁶ And the while thei spaken these thingis, Jhesus stood in the myddil of hem, and seide to hem, Pees to you; Y am, nyle ye drede.

³⁷ But thei weren affraied and agast, and gessiden hem to se a spirit.

³⁸ And he seide to hem, What ben ye troblid, and thouytis comen vp in to youre hertis?

³⁹ Se ye my hoondis and my feet, for Y my silf am. Fele ye, and se ye; for a spirit hath not fleisch and boonys, as ye seen that Y haue.

⁴⁰ And whanne he hadde seid this thing, he schewide hoondis and feet to hem.

⁴¹ And yit while thei bileueden not, and wondriden for ioye, he seide, Han ye here ony thing that schal be etun?

⁴² And thei proferden hym a part of a fisch rostid, and an hony combe.

⁹ and having turned back from the tomb told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

¹⁰ And it was the Magdalene Mary, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women with them, who told unto the apostles these things,

¹¹ and their sayings appeared before them as idle talk, and they were not believing them.

¹² And Peter having risen, did run to the tomb, and having stooped down he seeth the linen clothes lying alone, and he went away to his own home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

¹³ And, lo, two of them were going on during that day to a village, distant sixty furlongs from Jerusalem, the name of which is Emmaus,

¹⁴ and they were conversing with one another about all these things that have happened.

¹⁵ And it came to pass in their conversing and reasoning together, that Jesus himself, having come nigh, was going on with them,

¹⁶ and their eyes were holden so as not to know him,

¹⁷ and he said unto them, 'What are these words that ye exchange with one another, walking, and ye are sad?'

¹⁸ And the one, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, 'Art thou alone such a stranger in Jerusalem, that thou hast not known the things that came to pass in it in these days?'

¹⁹ And he said to them, 'What things?' And they said to him, 'The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who became a man — a prophet — powerful in deed and word, before God and all the people,

²⁰ how also the chief priests and our rulers did deliver him up to a judgment of death, and crucified him;

²¹ and we were hoping that he it is who is about to redeem Israel, and also with all these things, this third day is passing to-day, since these things happened.

²² 'And certain women of ours also astonished us, coming early to the tomb,

²³ and not having found his body, they came, saying also to have seen an apparition of messengers, who say he is alive,

²⁴ and certain of those with us went away unto the tomb, and found as even the women said, and him they saw not.'

²⁵ And he said unto them, 'O inconsiderate and slow in heart, to believe on all that the prophets spake!

²⁶ Was it not behoving the Christ these things to suffer, and to enter into his glory?'

²⁷ and having begun from Moses, and from all the prophets, he was expounding to them in all the Writings the things about himself.

²⁸ And they came nigh to the village whither they were going, and he made an appearance of going on further,

²⁹ and they constrained him, saying, 'Remain with us, for it is toward evening,' and the day did decline, and he went in to remain with them.

³⁰ And it came to pass, in his reclining (at meat) with them, having taken the bread, he blessed, and having broken, he was giving to them,

³¹ and their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he became unseen by them.

³² And they said one to another, 'Was not our heart burning within us, as he was speaking to us in the way, and as he was opening up to us the Writings?'

³³ And they, having risen up the same hour, turned back to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven, and those with them,

³⁴ saying — 'The Lord was raised indeed, and was seen by Simon;'

³⁵ and they were telling the things in the way, and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread,

³⁶ and as they are speaking these things, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith to them, 'Peace — to you;'

³⁷ and being amazed, and becoming affrighted, they were thinking themselves to see a spirit.

³⁸ And he said to them, 'Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do reasonings come up in your hearts?

³⁹ see my hands and my feet, that I am he; handle me and see, because a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me having.'

⁴⁰ And having said this, he shewed to them the hands and the feet,

⁴¹ and while they are not believing from the joy, and wondering, he said to them, 'Have ye anything here to eat?'

⁴² and they gave to him part of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb,
