⁴ And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And Jehovah had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

⁵ but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

⁶ And Jehovah said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

⁷ If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee shall be its desire; but do thou rule over it.

⁸ And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁹ And Jehovah said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?

¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

¹¹ And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

¹² when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

¹³ And Cain said unto Jehovah, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

¹⁴ Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.

¹⁵ And Jehovah said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And Jehovah appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

¹⁶ And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

⁴ And Abel also brought of the firstborn of his sheep and of his fatlings, and God looked upon Abel and his gifts,

⁵ but Cain and his sacrifices he regarded not, and Cain was exceedingly sorrowful and his countenance fell.

⁶ And the Lord God said to Cain, Why art thou become very sorrowful and why is thy countenance fallen?

⁷ Hast thou not sinned if thou hast brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? be still, to thee shall be his submission, and thou shalt rule over him.

⁸ And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass that when they were in the plain Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁹ And the Lord God said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? and he said, I know not, am I my brother's keeper?

¹⁰ And the Lord said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood cries to me out of the ground.

¹¹ And now thou art cursed from the earth which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.

¹² When thou tillest the earth, then it shall not continue to give its strength to thee: thou shalt be groaning and trembling on the earth.

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord God, My crime is too great for me to be forgiven.

¹⁴ If thou castest me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy presence, and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, then it will be that any one that finds me shall slay me.

¹⁵ And the Lord God said to him, Not so, any one that slays Cain shall suffer seven-fold vengeance; and the Lord God set a mark upon Cain that no one that found him might slay him.

¹⁶ So Cain went forth from the presence of God and dwelt in the land of Nod over against Edem.

⁴ and Abel took from his flock some of the first lambs that had been born and killed them and, as a gift, gave to Yahweh the fatty parts, which were the best parts. Yahweh was pleased with Abel and his offering,

⁵ but he was not pleased with Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his face looked dejected.

⁶ Yahweh said to Cain, “◄You should not be angry!/Why are you angry?► RHQ ◄You should not scowl like that!/Why do you scowl like that?► RHQ

⁷ If you had done what was right (OR, if you do what is right) RHQ, I would accept your offering. But if you do not do what is right, your desire to sin is ready to attack you like a wild animal that PRS crouches outside the doorway, ready to spring on its victim MET. Your desire to sin wants to control you, but you must ◄control/not obey► it.”

⁸ But one day, Cain said to his younger brother Abel, “Let's go for a walk in the fields .” So they went together. And when they were in the countryside, suddenly Cain attacked Abel and killed him.

⁹ Later, even though Yahweh knew what Cain had done, he said to Cain, “ Do you know where Abel, your younger brother, is?” Cain replied, “No, I do not know. ◄My job is not to guard my younger brother!/Am I supposed to take care of my younger brother?►” RHQ

¹⁰ Yahweh said, “You have done a terrible thing RHQ! So now it is as though your younger brother's voice is crying to me from the ground, demanding that his death must be avenged.

¹¹ You have killed your younger brother, and the ground has soaked up his blood. So now I will expel you from this land and curse your efforts to produce crops.

¹² You will till the ground to plant crops, but the ground will produce very few HYP crops. And you will continually wander around the earth, and not have any place to live permanently.”

¹³ Cain replied, “You are punishing me more then I can endure.

¹⁴ You are about to expel me from the ground that I have been cultivating, and I will no longer be able to come ◄into your presence/and talk with you►. Furthermore, I will be continually wandering around the earth with no place to live permanently, and anyone who sees me will kill me.”

¹⁵ But Yahweh said to him, “No, that will not happen. I will put a mark on you to warn anyone who sees you that I will punish him severely if he kills you. I will punish that person seven times as severely as I am punishing you.” Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain's forehead.

¹⁶ So Cain left Yahweh and went to live in the land called Nod, which means ❛wandering❜, which was east of Eden.

⁵ But in Cain and his offering he had no pleasure. And Cain was angry and his face became sad.

⁶ And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? and why is your face sad?

⁷ If you do well, will you not have honour? and if you do wrong, sin is waiting at the door, desiring to have you, but do not let it be your master.

⁸ And Cain said to his brother, Let us go into the field: and when they were in the field, Cain made an attack on his brother Abel and put him to death.

⁹ And the Lord said to Cain, Where is your brother Abel? And he said, I have no idea: am I my brother's keeper?

¹⁰ And he said, What have you done? the voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the earth.

¹¹ And now you are cursed from the earth, whose mouth is open to take your brother's blood from your hand;

¹² No longer will the earth give you her fruit as the reward of your work; you will be a wanderer in flight over the earth.

¹³ And Cain said, My punishment is greater than my strength.

¹⁴ You have sent me out this day from the face of the earth and from before your face; I will be a wanderer in flight over the earth, and whoever sees me will put me to death.

¹⁵ And the Lord said, Truly, if Cain is put to death, seven lives will be taken for his. And the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one might put him to death.

¹⁶ And Cain went away from before the face of the Lord, and made his living-place in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

⁵ and upon Cain, and on his offering, he did not look. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

⁷ If thou doest well, will not thy countenance look up with confidence? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

⁸ And Cain spoke to Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁹ And Jehovah said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: am I my brother's keeper?

¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

¹¹ And now be thou cursed from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.

¹² When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield thee its strength; a wanderer and fugitive shalt thou be on the earth.

¹³ And Cain said to Jehovah, My punishment is too great to be borne.

¹⁴ Behold, thou hast driven me this day from the face of the ground, and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a wanderer and fugitive on the earth; and it will come to pass, that every one who finds me will slay me.

¹⁵ And Jehovah said to him, Therefore, whoever slayeth Cain, it shall be revenged sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark on Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

¹⁶ And Cain went out from the presence of Jehovah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, toward the east of Eden.

⁸ And Cain said to Abel his brother: Let us go forth abroad. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him.

⁹ And the Lord said to Cain: Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, I know not: am I my brother’s keeper?

¹⁰ And he said to him: What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth to me from the earth.

¹¹ Now, therefore, cursed shalt thou be upon the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother at thy hand.

¹² When thou shalt till it, it shall not yield to thee its fruit: a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be upon the earth.

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord: My iniquity is greater than that I may deserve pardon.

¹⁴ Behold thou dost cast me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy face, and I shall be a vagabond and a fugitive on the earth: every one, therefore, that findeth me, shall kill me.

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him: No, it shall not be so: but whosoever shall kill Cain, shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, that whosoever found him should not kill him.

¹⁶ And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelt as a fugitive on the earth, at the east side of Eden.

⁴ Abel also brought an offering: the firstborn lambs of his flock, selecting the very best parts to offer. The Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering,

⁵ but he wasn't pleased with Cain and his offering, which made Cain very angry and he frowned in annoyance.

⁶ The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you so angry? Why do you look so annoyed?

⁷ If you were doing what's right, then you'd be looking happy. But if you don't do what's right, then sin will be like animal crouching outside your home, ready to pounce on you. It wants to have you, but you must be the one in control.”

⁸ Later, when Cain was talking with his brother Abel they went out into the fields where Cain attacked his brother and killed him.

⁹ “Where is your brother Abel?” the Lord asked Cain. “How should I know?” he replied. “Am I supposed to be my brother's care-giver?”

¹⁰ “What have you done?” the Lord asked. “Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.

¹¹ Consequently you are more cursed than the ground because you soaked it with your brother's blood.

¹² When you cultivate the ground, it won't produce crops for you. You'll be always on the run, wandering all over the earth.”

¹³ “My punishment is more than I can take,” Cain replied.

¹⁴ “Look! You're driving me away right now—cursing the ground and banishing me from your presence. I'm going to have to hide and always be on the run, left to wander all over the earth. Anyone who finds me is going to kill me!”

¹⁵ But the Lord replied, “No, Cain. Anyone who kills you will be punished seven times over.” The Lord placed a mark on Cain so that no one who came across him would kill him.

¹⁶ So Cain left the Lord's presence and went to live in a land called Nod, east of Eden.

⁴ And Habel also him selfe brought of the first fruites of his sheepe, and of the fat of them, and the Lord had respect vnto Habel, and to his offering,

⁵ But vnto Kain and to his offering he had no regarde: wherefore Kain was exceeding wroth, and his countenance fell downe.

⁶ Then ye Lord said vnto Kain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance cast downe?

⁷ If thou do well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sinne lieth at the doore: also vnto thee his desire shalbe subiect, and thou shalt rule ouer him.

⁸ Then Kain spake to Habel his brother. And when they were in the fielde, Kain rose vp against Habel his brother, and slewe him.

⁹ Then the Lord said vnto Kain, Where is Habel thy brother? Who answered, I cannot tell. Am I my brothers keeper?

¹⁰ Againe he said, What hast thou done? the voyce of thy brothers blood cryeth vnto me from the earth.

¹¹ Now therefore thou art cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receiue thy brothers blood from thine hand.

¹² When thou shalt till the grounde, it shall not henceforth yeelde vnto thee her strength: a vagabond and a runnagate shalt thou be in the earth.

¹³ Then Kain said to the Lord, My punishment is greater, then I can beare.

¹⁴ Behold, thou hast cast me out this day from the earth, and from thy face shall I be hid, and shalbe a vagabond, and a runnagate in the earth, and whosoeuer findeth me, shall slay me.

¹⁵ Then the Lord said vnto him, Doubtlesse whosoeuer slayeth Kain, he shalbe punished seue folde. And the Lord set a marke vpon Kain, lest any man finding him should kill him.

¹⁶ Then Kain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod towarde the Eastside of Eden.

⁴ And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering;

⁵ but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

⁶ And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

⁷ If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.'

⁸ And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁹ And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's keeper?'

⁶ And the Lord God said to Cain, Why art thou become very sorrowful and why is thy countenance fallen?

⁷ Hast thou not sinned if thou hast brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? be still, to thee shall be his submission, and thou shalt rule over him.

⁸ And Cain said to Abel his brother, Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass that when they were in the plain Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

⁹ And the Lord God said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? and he said, I know not, am I my brother’s keeper?

¹⁰ And the Lord said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood cries to me out of the ground.

¹¹ And now thou art cursed from the earth which has opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.

¹² When thou tillest the earth, then it shall not continue to give its strength to thee: thou shalt be groaning and trembling on the earth.

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord God, My crime is too great for me to be forgiven.

¹⁴ If thou castest me out this day from the face of the earth, and I shall be hidden from thy presence, and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, then it will be that anyone that finds me shall slay me.

¹⁵ And the Lord God said to him, Not so, anyone that slays Cain shall suffer sevenfold vengeance; and the Lord God set a mark upon Cain that no one that found him might slay him.

¹⁶ So Cain went forth from the presence of God and dwelt in the land of Nod over against Eden.

⁴ His younger brother took a sheep, he killed it, he gave good parts to God. Abel pleased God.

⁵ Cain did not please him. Because of that Cain was (habitually) angry. His face changed (became different).

⁶ God said to him, “Why are you angry with me? Why did your face change towards me? You should not be sullen.

⁷ If you did right you would have been happy. You were doing badly. You should straighten yourself up to do good. If you do that you will make me happy. If you don't you will keep doing evil.” Missed concept of need to resist temptation.

⁸ Cain didn't listen to God. He kept on being sullen. Because of that he said to his younger brother, “Let's go somewhere a long way off.” They went off. Then Cain killed his younger brother.

⁹ Because of that God asked him, “Where is your younger brother?” The eldest one lied, “I don't know. I don't take care of him.”

¹⁰ God said to him, “You lied. You killed him. His blood is on the ground. You truly did badly.

¹¹ In response I will do evil to you because of him/it. The ground will stay bad for you.

¹² And foods will not come up for you. I will send you far off. With fear you will keep going to other places.”

¹³ Cain said to him, “You have made it extremely hard for me.

¹⁴ I will go about to other places. Perhaps someone will kill me.”

¹⁵ God said to him, “Whoever hits/kills you I will hit/kill him truly because of you.”

¹⁶ Because of that Cain went far off. He stayed eastwards a long way from Eden. They call that far country, 'He just keeps wandering around'.

⁴ and Habel he brought also of the first-born of his sheep and of their fatlings. And there was acceptableness before the Lord in Habel and in his oblation;

⁵ but in Kain and his oblation there was not acceptableness. And it was greatly displeasing to Kain, and his countenance was downcast.

⁶ And the Lord said to Kain, Why art thou displeased, and why is thy countenance downcast?

⁷ If thou doest thy work well, is it not remitted to thee? And if thou doest not thy work well, thy sin unto the day of judgment is reserved, when it will be exacted of thee, if thou convert not: but if thou convert, it is remitted to thee.

⁸ And Kain spake with Habel his brother; and it was in their being in the field that Kain arose against Habel his brother, and killed him.

⁹ And the Lord said to Kain, Where is Habel thy brother? And he said, I know not; am I the keeper of my brother?

¹⁰ And He said, What hast thou done? The voice of the blood of generations which were to come from thy brother complaineth before Me, from the earth!

¹¹ And now, accursed art thou from the earth, which hath opened her mouth and received the blood of thy brother from thy hand.

¹² When thou tillest the earth, it shall not add to give its virtue to thee; a castaway and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

¹³ And Kain said before the Lord, Greater is my guilt than may be forgiven.

¹⁴ Behold, Thou hast rejected me this day from the face of the earth, and from Thy presence it is not possible to hide; and I shall be a castaway and a wanderer in the earth, and anyone who findeth me will slay me.

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, Therefore anyone who killeth Kain, unto seven generations it shall be exacted of him. And the Lord set unto Kain a sign, lest anyone who found him should kill him.

¹⁶ And Kain went out from before the Lord, and dwelt in the land of the wanderer and outcast, which was made for him in the beginnings in the Garden of Eden.

⁴ Abel Vanity, Mourning also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Adonai respected Abel Vanity, Mourning and his offering,

⁵ but he didn’t respect Cain Acquisition and his offering. Cain Acquisition was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.

⁶ Adonai said to Cain Acquisition, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?

⁷ If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”

⁸ Cain Acquisition said to Abel Vanity, Mourning, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain Acquisition rose up against Abel Vanity, Mourning, his brother, and murdered him.

⁹ Adonai said to Cain Acquisition, “Where is Abel Vanity, Mourning, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

¹⁰ Adonai said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.

¹¹ Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

¹² From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”

¹³ Cain Acquisition said to Adonai , “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

¹⁴ Behold, you have divorced and driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.”

¹⁵ Adonai said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain Acquisition, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Adonai appointed a sign for Cain Acquisition, so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

¹⁶ Cain Acquisition left Adonai ’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden Delight.

⁴ And Abel brought his present to God too, but Abel brought the best sheep from his mob of sheep. And God was happy with Abel, and with his present.

⁵ But God was not happy with Cain, and he was not happy with Cain’s present. Then Cain got very angry. His face changed and he looked very sad.

⁶ God said, “Cain. Why are you looking angry and sad?

⁷ If you do the right thing, I will be happy with you. But, if you don’t do the right thing, you have to be careful. You’ve got to tell yourself not to do those bad things you want to do. If you keep doing wrong things your life will be full of trouble.”

⁸ After that Cain went to his brother, Abel, and said, “Let’s go for a walk.” So Cain and Abel went out bush together. While they were there, Cain got up and hit his brother, and murdered him.

⁹ Later, God said to Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” Cain said, “I don’t know where my brother is. I can’t look after him all the time. That’s not my job.”

¹⁰ God said to Cain, “What did you do? You know you did a really bad thing. I can see your brother’s blood on the ground. It’s like his blood is calling out to me. It is telling me you murdered him.

¹¹ From now on, I’m going to curse you. You murdered your brother and his blood is on the ground. So I will make the ground bad for you.

¹² If you try to grow plants in the ground nothing will grow for you. You will go away from me. And you will walk around in lots of places, but you will have no home.”

¹³ Cain said to God, “God, you are too hard on me.

¹⁴ You will not let me work my land now, and I have to go away from you. I have to walk around everywhere. I can’t sit down anywhere. Anybody might murder me now.”

¹⁵ God said, “Cain, that will not happen. If somebody does murder you, then I will punish them 7 times more than I punished you.” So God put a mark on Cain’s head so everybody will know that they can’t murder him.

¹⁶ After this, Cain walked away from God and went to live in a place called Nod. That country was on the east side of the garden called Eden.

⁴ As for Abel, he brought some of the firstborn of his flock and some of the fat. Yahweh accepted Abel and his offering,

⁵ but Cain and his offering he did not accept. So Cain was very angry, and he scowled.

⁶ Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry and why are you scowling?

⁷ If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin crouches at the door and desires to control you, but you must rule over it.”

⁸ Cain spoke to Abel his brother. It came about that while they were in the fields, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

⁹ Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?”

¹⁰ Yahweh said, “What have you done? Your brother's blood is calling out to me from the ground.

¹¹ Now cursed are you from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

¹² When you cultivate the ground, from now on it will not yield to you its strength. A fugitive and a wanderer you will be in the earth.”

¹³ Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

¹⁴ Indeed, you have driven me out this day from this ground, and I will be hidden from your face. I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

¹⁵ Yahweh said to him, “If anyone kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Then Yahweh put a mark on Cain, so that if anyone found him, that person would not attack him.

¹⁶ So Cain went out from the presence of Yahweh and lived in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

⁵ soothly he beheld not to Cain and to his gifts. And Cain was wroth greatly, and his cheer felled down.

⁶ And the Lord said to him, Why art thou wroth, and why felled down thy face?

⁷ Whether not if thou shalt do well, thou shalt receive well; but if thou doest evil, thy sin shall be present anon in the gates? but the desire thereof, that is, of sin, shall be under thee, and thou shalt be lord thereof.

⁸ And Cain said to Abel, his brother, Go we out. And when they were in the field, Cain rose against his brother Abel, and killed him.

⁹ And the Lord said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? Which answered, I know not; whether I am the keeper of my brother?

¹¹ Now therefore thou shalt be cursed on the earth, that opened his mouth, and received of thine hand the blood of thy brother.

¹² When thou shalt work the earth, it shall not give his fruits to thee; thou shalt be unstable of dwelling, and fleeing about on the earth, in all the days of thy life.

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord, My wickedness is more than that I deserve forgiveness;

¹⁴ lo! today thou castest me out from the face of the earth; and I shall be hid from thy face, and I shall be unstable of dwelling, and fleeing about in earth; therefore each man that shall find me shall slay me.

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, It shall not be done so, but each man that shall slay Cain shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a sign in Cain, that each man that should find him should not slay him.

¹⁶ And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelled fleeing about in the earth, at the east coast of Eden, that is, of earthly paradise.

⁴ and Abel offered of the first engendered of his flock, and of the fatness of those. And the Lord beheld to Abel and to the gifts of him;

⁵ soothly he beheld not to Cain and to his gifts. And Cain was wroth greatly, and his cheer felled down, (or And Cain was greatly angered, and his face fell).

⁶ And the Lord said to him, Why art thou wroth, and why felled down thy face?

⁷ Whether not if thou shalt do well, thou shalt receive well; but if thou doest evil, thy sin shall be present anon in the gates? but the desire thereof, that is, of sin, shall be under thee, and thou shalt be lord thereof. (If thou shalt do well, then thou shalt be accepted; but if thou doest evil, then at once thy sin shall be present at the gates, and the desire of sin shall take thee under, and so thou must be lord of it, or rule over it.)

⁸ And Cain said to Abel, his brother, Go we out, (or But then Cain said to his brother Abel, Walk with me). And when they were in the field, Cain rose (up) against his brother Abel, and killed him.

⁹ And the Lord said to Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? Which answered, I know not; whether I am the keeper of my brother? (And the Lord said to Cain, Where is thy brother Abel? And he answered, How do I know; am I my brother’s keeper?)

¹⁰ And God said to Cain, What hast thou done? the voice of the blood of thy brother crieth to me from the earth (or the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth out to me from the earth).

¹¹ Now therefore thou shalt be cursed on the earth, that opened his mouth, and received of thine hand the blood of thy brother. (And so now thou shalt be cursed on the earth, that hath opened its mouth, and received thy brother’s blood from thy hand.)

¹² When thou shalt work the earth, it shall not give his fruits to thee; thou shalt be unstable of dwelling, and fleeing about on the earth, in all the days of thy life. (When thou shalt work the earth, it shall not give its fruits to thee; thou shalt be of unstable dwelling, and fleeing about on the earth, all the days of thy life.)

¹³ And Cain said to the Lord, My wickedness is more than that I deserve forgiveness (for); (And Cain said to the Lord, My punishment is more than that I can bear;)

¹⁴ lo! today thou castest me out from the face of the earth; and I shall be hid from thy face, and I shall be unstable of dwelling, and fleeing about in (the) earth; therefore each man that shall find me shall slay me. (behold! today thou castest me out from the face of the earth; and I shall be hid from thy face, and I shall be of unstable dwelling, and fleeing about on the earth; and any man who findeth me shall slay me.)

¹⁵ And the Lord said to him, It shall not be done so, but each man that shall slay Cain shall be punished sevenfold. And the Lord set a sign in Cain, that each man that should find him should not slay him. (And the Lord said to him, It shall not be done so, but any man who shall kill Cain shall be punished seven times. And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that any man who would find him would not kill him.)

¹⁶ And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelled fleeing about in the earth, at the east coast of Eden, that is, of (the) earthly paradise. (And so Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and lived in the land of Nod, to the east of the Garden of Eden, that is, to the east of Paradise on earth.)

⁴ and Abel offride of the first gendrid of his floc, and of the fatnesse of tho. And the Lord bihelde to Abel and to the yiftis of hym;

⁵ sotheli he bihelde not to Cayn and to hise yiftis. And Cayn was wrooth greetli, and his cheer felde doun.

⁶ And the Lord seide to hym, Whi art thou wrooth, and whi felde doun thi face?

⁷ Whether not if thou schalt do wel, thou schalt resseyue; but if thou doist yuele, thi synne schal be present anoon in the yatis? but the desir therof schal be vndur thee, and thou schalt be lord therof.

⁸ And Cayn seide to Abel his brother, Go we out. And whanne thei weren in the feeld, Cayn roos ayens his brother Abel, and killide him.

⁹ And the Lord seide to Cayn, Where is Abel thi brother? Which answerde, Y woot not; whether Y am the kepere of my brothir?

¹⁰ And God seide to Cayn, What hast thou do? the vois of the blood of thi brother crieth to me fro erthe.

¹¹ Now therfor thou schalt be cursid on erthe, that openyde his mouth, and resseyuede of thin hond the blood of thi brothir.

¹² Whanne thou schalt worche the erthe, it schal not yyue his fruytis to thee; thou schalt be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute on erthe in alle the daies of thi lijf.

¹³ And Cayn seide to the Lord, My wickidnesse is more than that Y disserue foryyuenesse; lo!

¹⁴ to dai thou castist me out fro the face of the erthe; and Y schal be hid fro thi face, and Y schal be vnstable of dwellyng and fleynge aboute in erthe; therfore ech man that schal fynde me schal slee me.

¹⁵ And the Lord seide to hym, It schal not be don so, but ech man that schal slee Cayn shal be punyschid seuenfold. And the Lord settide a signe in Cayn, that ech man that schulde fynde hym schulde not slee hym.

¹⁶ And Cayn yede out fro the face of the Lord, and dwellide fleynge aboute in erthe, at the eest coost of Eden.

⁴ and Abel, he hath brought, he also, from the female firstlings of his flock, even from their fat ones; and Jehovah looketh unto Abel and unto his present,

⁵ and unto Cain and unto his present He hath not looked; and it is very displeasing to Cain, and his countenance is fallen.

⁶ And Jehovah saith unto Cain, 'Why hast thou displeasure? and why hath thy countenance fallen?

⁷ Is there not, if thou dost well, acceptance? and if thou dost not well, at the opening a sin-offering is crouching, and unto thee its desire, and thou rulest over it.'

⁸ And Cain saith unto Abel his brother, 'Let us go into the field;' and it cometh to pass in their being in the field, that Cain riseth up against Abel his brother, and slayeth him.

⁹ And Jehovah saith unto Cain, 'Where is Abel thy brother?' and he saith, 'I have not known; my brother's keeper — I?'

¹⁰ And He saith, 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying unto Me from the ground;

¹¹ and now, cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive the blood of thy brother from thy hand;

¹² when thou tillest the ground, it doth not add to give its strength to thee — a wanderer, even a trembling one, thou art in the earth.'

¹³ And Cain saith unto Jehovah, 'Greater is my punishment than to be borne;

¹⁴ lo, Thou hast driven me to-day from off the face of the ground, and from Thy face I am hid; and I have been a wanderer, even a trembling one, in the earth, and it hath been — every one finding me doth slay me.'

¹⁵ And Jehovah saith to him, 'Therefore — of any slayer of Cain sevenfold it is required;' and Jehovah setteth to Cain a token that none finding him doth slay him.

¹⁶ And Cain goeth out from before Jehovah, and dwelleth in the land, moving about east of Eden;
