Romans 10:1-16 in English

¹ Brethren, my heart’s desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

³ For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law unto righteousness to every one that believeth.

⁵ For Moses writeth that the man that doeth the righteousness which is of the law shall live thereby.

⁶ But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:)

⁷ or, Who shall descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)

⁸ But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:

⁹ because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:

¹⁰ for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

¹¹ For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.

¹² For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich unto all that call upon him:

¹³ for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

¹⁵ and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

¹⁶ But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

⁵ For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

⁶ But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

⁷ Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

⁸ But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

⁹ That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

¹⁰ For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

¹¹ For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

¹² For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

¹³ For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

¹⁵ And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

¹⁶ But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

¹ My fellow believers, what I deeply desire and what I pray to God earnestly for is that he will save my own people, the Jews.

² I declare truthfully about them that although they ◄zealously seek/very much want to know► God, they do not understand how to seek/know him correctly.

³ They did not ◄submit themselves to/accept► the way that God erases the record of people's sins. They did not want to recognize that way because they wanted him to do it their own way.

⁴ They wanted God to erase the record of their sins as a result of their obeying his laws. But because of what Christ has done, it is no longer necessary for people to obey the laws God gave Moses in order for the record of their sins to be erased. Now God will erase the record of sins of everyone who trusts in what Christ has done.

⁵ In regard to the old way, Moses wrote concerning people who obey God's laws, “It is the people who have done perfectly the things that the laws require who will gain eternal life by doing them.”

⁶ But those whose record of sins God has erased as a result of their believing in Christ can say to anyone PRS as Moses said, “You should not critically think inwardly, ‘◄Someone will have to go up and enter heaven!/Who will go up and enter heaven?►’ RHQ” That is to say, someone will have to go up and bring Christ down to bring the message of salvation to us!

⁷ “Or you should not think inwardly, ‘◄Someone will have to go down and enter the place where the spirits of dead persons are!/Who will go down and enter the place where the spirits of dead persons are?►’ RHQ” That is to say, someone will have to go down and bring Christ up from there to bring the message of salvation to us. You should not say that because Christ has already come down to save us, and has already become alive after he died!

⁸ But instead, those who believe in Christ PRS can say what RHQ Moses also said, “You (sg) can find out about God's message very easily. You can speak MTY about it; you can think MTY about it.” This is the message that we proclaim, that people must believe in Christ.

⁹ This message is that if anyone of you confesses/says publicly that Jesus is Lord, and if you (sg) believe that God ◄caused him to become alive again after he died/raised him from the dead►, you will be saved { God will save you}.

¹⁰ If people believe that Christ died and that God caused him to become alive again CHI, the result is that God will erase the record of their sins. And for those who state/declare publicly that Jesus is their Lord, the result is that God will save them.

¹¹ It is written { Isaiah wrote} in the Scriptures PRS about the Messiah, “Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”

¹² God treats Jews and non-Jews similarly. Because he is the same Lord for all people who believe in him, he abundantly blesses all who ask him to save them.

¹³ This is just like what the prophet Joel wrote: “All those who ask the Lord God to save them will be saved {The Lord God will save all those who ask him to save them}.”

¹⁴ In regard to the people of Israel rejecting the gospel, some people might object by saying, (OR, This raises another problem about the Jews:) “◄They certainly cannot ask Christ to save them if they have not first believed in him!/How can they ask Christ to help/save them if they have not first believed in him?► RHQ And ◄they certainly cannot believe in him if they have not heard about him!/how can they believe in him if they have not heard about him?► RHQ And ◄they certainly cannot hear about him if someone does not preach to them about him!/how can they hear about him if someone does not preach to them about him?► RHQ

¹⁵ And those who preach to them about Christ, ◄certainly cannot preach if they are not sent by God {if God does not send them} to preach!/how can they preach if they are not sent by God {if God does not send them} to preach?► RHQ His sending messengers to them would be just like it is written {like someone wrote} in the Scriptures, ‘The arrival MTY of those who preach the good message is wonderful!’ ”

¹⁶ I would reply in this way to people who say such things: God has indeed sent people to preach the message about Christ. But not all the people of Israel have paid attention to the good message! It is like what Isaiah said when he felt very discouraged, “Lord, it seems as if hardly anyone believed what they heard us (exc) preach! RHQ”

² For I give witness of them that they have a strong desire for God, but not with knowledge.

³ Because, not having knowledge of God's righteousness, and desiring to give effect to their righteousness, they have not put themselves under the righteousness of God.

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who has faith.

⁵ For Moses says that the man who does the righteousness which is of the law will get life by it.

⁶ But the righteousness which is of faith says these words, Say not in your heart, Who will go up to heaven? (that is, to make Christ come down:)

⁷ Or, Who will go down into the deep? (that is, to make Christ come again from the dead:)

⁸ But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart: that is, the word of faith of which we are the preachers:

⁹ Because, if you say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and have faith in your heart that God has made him come back from the dead, you will have salvation:

¹⁰ For with the heart man has faith to get righteousness, and with the mouth he says that Jesus is Lord to get salvation.

¹¹ Because it is said in the holy Writings, Whoever has faith in him will not be shamed.

¹² And the Jew is not different from the Greek: for there is the same Lord of all, who is good to all who have hope in his name:

¹³ Because, Whoever will give worship to the name of the Lord will get salvation.

¹⁴ But how will they give worship to him in whom they have no faith? and how will they have faith in him of whom they have not had news? and how will they have news without a preacher?

¹⁵ And how will there be preachers if they are not sent? As it is said, How beautiful are the feet of those who give the glad news of good things.

¹⁶ But they have not all given ear to the good news. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has had faith in our word?

¹ Brethren, the delight of my own heart and my supplication which I address to God for them is for salvation.

⁵ For Moses lays down in writing the righteousness which is of the law, The man who has practised those things shall live by them.

⁶ But the righteousness of faith speaks thus: Do not say in thine heart, Who shall ascend to the heavens? that is, to bring Christ down;

⁷ or, Who shall descend into the abyss? that is, to bring up Christ from among the dead.

⁸ But what says it? The word is near thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:

⁹ that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from among the dead, thou shalt be saved.

¹⁰ For with the heart is believed to righteousness; and with the mouth confession made to salvation.

¹¹ For the scripture says, No one believing on him shall be ashamed.

¹² For there is no difference of Jew and Greek; for the same Lord of all is rich towards all that call upon him.

¹³ For every one whosoever, who shall call on the name of the Lord, shall be saved.

¹⁴ How then shall they call upon him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe on him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without one who preaches?

¹⁵ and how shall they preach unless they have been sent? according as it is written, How beautiful the feet of them that announce glad tidings of peace, of them that announce glad tidings of good things!

¹⁶ But they have not all obeyed the glad tidings. For Esaias says, Lord, who has believed our report?

⁴ For the end of the law is Christ, unto justice to every one that believeth.

⁵ For Moses wrote, that the justice which is of the law, the man that shall do it, shall live by it.

⁶ But the justice which is of faith, speaketh thus: Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? that is, to bring Christ down;

⁷ Or who shall descend into the deep? that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.

⁸ But what saith the scripture? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart. This is the word of faith, which we preach.

⁹ For if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thy heart that God hath raised him up from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

¹⁰ For, with the heart, we believe unto justice; but, with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation.

¹² For there is no distinction of the Jew and the Greek: for the same is Lord over all, rich unto all that call upon him.

³ For they, failing to understand God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to God's righteousness.

⁴ Now for everyone who believes into righteousness, Christ is the end of the law

⁵ —Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”

⁶ But the righteousness that is from faith speaks like this: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down)

⁷ “or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

⁸ So what does it say? “The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the message of faith that we proclaim):

⁹ That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

¹⁰ Because with the heart one believes into righteousness, and with the mouth one promises into salvation.

¹¹ Because the Scripture says: “Everyone who believes on Him will never be put to shame”;

¹² because there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, since the same Lord of all is rich to all who call upon Him;

¹³ because: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

¹⁴ How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe on Him of whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without someone proclaiming it?

¹⁵ And how will they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written: “How timely is the arrival of those who bring good news of peace, of those who announce the good things.”

¹⁶ (However, they did not all obey the gospel; because Isaiah says: “Lord, who has believed our message?”)

¹ My brothers and sisters, my heart's desire—my prayer to God—is for the salvation of the people of Israel!

² I can testify to their passionate dedication to God, but it's not based on knowing him as he truly is.

³ They don't understand how God makes us right with him, and they try to make themselves right. They refuse to accept God's way of making people right.

⁴ For Christ is the fulfillment of the law. All those who trust in him are made right.

⁵ Moses wrote, “Whoever does what is right by obeying the law will live.”

⁶ But the attitude of doing right that comes from trust says this: “Don't ask ‘who'll go to heaven?’ (asking to bring Christ down),”

⁷ or “‘who'll go to the place of the dead?’ (asking to bring Christ back from the dead).”

⁸ What Scripture actually says is: “The message is very close to you—it's what you talk about and what's in your mind.” In fact it's this message based on trust that we're presenting.

⁹ For if you declare that you accept Jesus as Lord, and you are convinced in your mind that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved.

¹⁰ Your trust in God makes you right and good, and your declaration of accepting God saves you.

¹¹ As Scripture says, “Those who trust in him will not be disappointed.”

¹² There's no difference between Jew and Greek—for the same Lord is Lord of everyone, and he gives generously to everyone who asks him.

¹³ For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

¹⁴ But how can people call on someone they don't trust? How can they trust someone they haven't heard about? How can they hear unless they're told?

¹⁵ How can they go out and tell others unless they're sent? Just as Scripture says, “Those who come bringing the good news are truly welcome!”

¹⁶ But not everyone has accepted the good news. As Isaiah asks: “Lord, who trusted in the news they heard from us?”

¹ Brethren, mine hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saued.

² For I beare them record, that they haue the zeale of God, but not according to knowledge.

³ For they, being ignorant of the righteousnes of God, and going about to stablish their owne righteousnes, haue not submitted themselues to the righteousnes of God.

⁴ For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousnes vnto euery one that beleeueth.

⁵ For Moses thus describeth the righteousnes which is of the Lawe, That the man which doeth these things, shall liue thereby.

⁶ But the righteousnes which is of faith, speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heauen? (that is to bring Christ from aboue)

⁷ Or, Who shall descend into the deepe? (that is to bring Christ againe from the dead)

⁸ But what sayth it? The worde is neere thee, euen in thy mouth, and in thine heart. This is the worde of faith which we preach.

⁹ For if thou shalt confesse with thy mouth the Lord Iesus, and shalt beleeue in thine heart, that God raised him vp from the dead, thou shalt be saued:

¹⁰ For with the heart man beleeueth vnto righteousnes, and with the mouth man confesseth to saluation.

¹¹ For the Scripture saith, Whosoeuer beleeueth in him, shall not be ashamed.

¹² For there is no difference betweene the Iewe and the Grecian: for he that is Lord ouer all, is rich vnto all, that call on him.

¹³ For whosoeuer shall call vpon the Name of the Lord, shalbe saued.

¹⁴ But how shall they call on him, in whome they haue not beleeued? and how shall they beleeue in him, of whom they haue not heard? and howe shall they heare without a preacher?

¹⁵ And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, Howe beautifull are the feete of them which bring glad tidings of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

¹⁶ But they haue not all obeyed ye Gospel: for Esaias saith, Lord, who hath beleeued our report?

¹ Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

² For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

³ For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

⁴ For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

⁵ For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

⁶ But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

⁷ or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

⁸ But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

⁹ that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

¹⁰ For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

¹¹ For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

¹² For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

⁸ We read this in God’s book, “The message from God is very close to you It is right inside you, and you say it as you talk.” That is the message that we tell you, that you’ve got to believe in Jesus.

⁹ That message is this. If you tell everybody, “I belong to Jesus,” and if you really believe that God made him alive again after he died. If you believe like that and talk like that, God will save you.

¹⁰ If you really believe God, then he says that you are all right. And if you tell everybody that you believe in him, then he saves you.

¹¹ God’s book has this too, “Anyone that trusts God will not be ashamed.”

¹² This message is for everyone, Jewish people and those that are not Jewish. We are all the same, we have the same God and he is good to everyone that asks him for help.

¹³ And God’s book has this too, “God will save everybody that calls out to him and asks him, ‘Please help me and save me.’”

¹⁴ But what about people that don’t believe in God? They can’t call out to him, can they? And what about people that have never even heard about Jesus? They can’t believe in him, can they? Somebody has to tell them about him, and then they can believe in him.

¹⁵ And somebody has to send those messengers to go and tell the people. God’s book has this too, “It is really good to see God’s messengers come and bring his good news.”

¹⁶ But some people don’t want to hear God’s message. Long ago Isaiah wrote about them in God’s book. He wrote this, “Hardly anybody believes the message we tell them, God.”

¹ Brethren my hertes desyre and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.

² For I beare them recorde that they have a fervet mynde to God warde but not accordinge to knowledge.

³ For they are ignoraunt of the rightewesnes which is alowed before God and goo about to stablisshe their awne rightewesnes and therfore are not obedient vnto the rightewesnes which is of valew before God.

⁴ For Christ is the ende of the lawe to iustifie all that beleve.

⁵ Moses describeth the rightewesnes which cometh of the lawe howe that the man which doth the thinges of the lawe shall lyve therin.

⁶ But the rightewesnes which cometh of fayth speaketh on this wyse. Saye not in thyne hert who shall ascende into heven? (that is nothinge els then to fetch Christ doune)

⁷ Other who shall descende into the depe? (that is nothinge els but to fetch vp Christ from deeth)

⁸ But what sayth the scripture? The worde is nye the even in thy mouth and in thyn herte. This worde is the worde of fayth which we preache.

⁹ For yf thou shalt knowledge with thy mouth that Iesus is the lorde and shalt beleve with thyn hert that God raysed him up from deeth thou shalt be safe.

¹⁰ For the belefe of the hert iustifieth: and to knowledge with the mouth maketh a man safe.

¹¹ For the scripture sayth: whosoever beleveth on him shall not be ashamed.

¹² Ther is no difference bitwene the Iewe and the gentyll. For one is Lorde of all which is ryche vnto all that call on him.

¹³ For whosoever shall call on the name of the lorde shalbe safe.

¹³ For each man, whoever shall inwardly call the name of the Lord or whoever shall in-call the name of the Lord, shall be safe (or shall be saved).

¹⁴ How then shall they inwardly call him or How therefore shall they in-call him, into whom they have not believed? or how shall they believe to him, whom they have not heard? (or how shall they believe in him, whom they have not heard?) How shall they hear, without a preacher?

¹⁵ and how shall they preach, but (that) they be sent? As it is written, How fair be the feet of them that preach or that evangelize peace, of them that preach good things.

¹⁶ But not all men obey to the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who believed to our hearing? (But not everyone obeyeth the Gospel or the Good News. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who believed our message?)

¹ Brethren, the pleasure indeed of my heart, and my supplication that is to God for Israel, is — for salvation;

² for I bear them testimony that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge,

³ for not knowing the righteousness of God, and their own righteousness seeking to establish, to the righteousness of God they did not submit.

⁴ For Christ is an end of law for righteousness to every one who is believing,

⁵ for Moses doth describe the righteousness that is of the law, that, 'The man who did them shall live in them,'

⁶ and the righteousness of faith doth thus speak: 'Thou mayest not say in thine heart, Who shall go up to the heaven,' that is, Christ to bring down?

⁷ or, 'Who shall go down to the abyss,' that is, Christ out of the dead to bring up.

⁸ But what doth it say? 'Nigh thee is the saying — in thy mouth, and in thy heart:' that is, the saying of the faith, that we preach;

⁹ that if thou mayest confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and mayest believe in thy heart that God did raise him out of the dead, thou shalt be saved,

¹⁰ for with the heart doth one believe to righteousness, and with the mouth is confession made to salvation;

¹¹ for the Writing saith, 'Every one who is believing on him shall not be ashamed,'

¹² for there is no difference between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord of all is rich to all those calling upon Him,

¹³ for every one — whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, he shall be saved.'

¹⁴ How then shall they call upon him in whom they did not believe? and how shall they believe on him of whom they did not hear? and how shall they hear apart from one preaching?

¹⁵ and how shall they preach, if they may not be sent? according as it hath been written, 'How beautiful the feet of those proclaiming good tidings of peace, of those proclaiming good tidings of the good things!'

¹⁶ But they were not all obedient to the good tidings, for Isaiah saith, 'Lord, who did give credence to our report?'
