Numbers 25:9-18 in English

⁹ And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

¹⁰ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

¹² Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

¹³ and it shall be unto him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

¹⁴ Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites.

¹⁵ And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

¹⁶ And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

¹⁷ Vex the Midianites, and smite them;

¹⁸ for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

⁹ And those that died in the plague were four and twenty thousand.

¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

¹³ and he and his seed after him shall have a perpetual covenant of priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.

¹⁴ Now the name of the smitten Israelitish man, who was smitten with the Madianitish woman, was Zambri son of Salmon, prince of a house of the tribe of Symeon.

¹⁵ And the name of the Madianitish woman who was smitten, was Chasbi, daughter of Sur, a prince of the nation of Ommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Madiam.

¹⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying,

¹⁷ Plague the Madianites as enemies, and smite them,

¹⁸ for they are enemies to you by the treachery wherein they ensnare you through Phogor, and through Chasbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Madiam, who was smitten in the day of the plague because of Phogor.

¹⁸ for they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.

⁹ But 24,000 people had already died from that plague.

¹⁰ Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,

¹¹ “Phinehas has caused me to stop being angry with the Israeli people, by being as eager as I am to stop this sinful behavior. I was ready to get rid of all the Israeli people because I was extremely angry, but Phinehas has prevented me from doing that.

¹² Now tell him that I am making a special peace agreement with him.

¹³ In this agreement, I am promising to give to him and to his descendants the right/authority to be priests. I am doing this because he showed that he was very eager to honor me, his God, by stopping this sinful behavior. He has caused the Israeli people to become acceptable to me again by causing them to be forgiven for their sin.”

¹⁴ The Israeli man who was killed with the woman of the Moab people-group was named Zimri. He was the son of Salu, who was the leader of a family from the tribe of Simeon.

¹⁵ The woman's name was Cozbi. She was the daughter of Zur, who was the leader of one of the clans of the Midian people-group.

¹⁶ Then Yahweh said to Moses/me,

¹⁷ “ Take your men and attack the Midian people-group and kill them.

¹⁸ They have become your enemies, because they tricked you Israeli people and induced/persuaded many of you to worship Baal, and because one of your men had sex with Cozbi, who was the daughter of a leader of the Midian people-group. She was killed at the time the plague started because the people sinned at Peor Mountain.”

⁹ And those that died in the plague were four and twenty thousand.

¹⁰ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

⁹ But twenty-four thousand of them had come to their death by the disease.

¹⁰ And the Lord said to Moses,

¹¹ Through Phinehas, and because of his passion for my honour, my wrath has been turned away from the children of Israel, so that I have not sent destruction on them all in my wrath.

¹² So say to them that I will make with him an agreement of peace:

¹³ And by this agreement, he and his sons after him have the right to be priests for ever; because, by his care for the honour of his God, he took away the sin of the children of Israel.

¹⁴ Now the man of Israel who was put to death with the woman of Midian was Zimri, the son of Salu, a chief of one of the families of the Simeonites.

¹⁵ And the woman of Midian who was put to death was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was the head of a family in Midian.

¹⁶ Then the Lord said to Moses,

¹⁷ Take up arms against the Midianites and overcome them;

¹⁸ For they are a danger to you with their false ways, causing sin to come on you in the question of Peor, and because of Cozbi, their sister, the daughter of the chief of Midian, who was put to death at the time of the disease which came on you because of Peor.

⁹ And those that died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹⁰ And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

⁹ And there were slain four and twenty thousand men.

¹⁰ And the Lord said to Moses:

¹¹ Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned away my wrath from the children of Israel: because he was moved with my zeal against them, that I myself might not destroy the children of Israel in my zeal.

¹² Therefore say to him: Behold I give him the peace of my covenant,

¹³ And the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed, because he hath been zealous for his God, and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of Israel.

¹⁴ And the name of the Israelite, was slain with the woman of Madian, was Zambri the son of Salu, a prince the kindred and tribe of Simeon.

¹⁵ And the Madianite woman, that was slain with him, was called Cozbi the daughter of Sur, a most noble prince among the Madianites.

¹⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

¹⁷ Let the Madianites find you enemies, and slay you them:

¹⁸ Because they also have acted like enemies against you, and have guilefully deceived you by the idol Phogor, and Cozbi their sister, a daughter of a prince of Madian, who was slain in the day the plague for the sacrilege of Phogor.

⁹ but 24,000 had already died.

¹⁰ The Lord told Moses,

¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites, because out of all of them he was passionately dedicated to me, so I did not destroy the Israelites in my passionate anger.

¹² So make an announcement that I am granting him my peace agreement.

¹³ It will be an agreement that ensures a permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was passionately dedicated to his God and set the Israelites right.”

¹⁴ The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri, son of Salu, a family leader of the tribe of Simeon.

¹⁵ The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a family leader of a Midianite tribe.

¹⁶ The Lord told Moses,

¹⁷ “Attack the Midianites and kill them,

¹⁸ because they attacked you deceptively, leading you astray by using Peor and their woman Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader—the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of their devotion to Peor.”

⁹ And there died in that plague, foure and twentie thousand.

¹⁰ Then the Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

¹¹ Phinehas the sonne of Eleazar, the sonne of Aaron the Priest, hath turned mine anger away from the children of Israel, while hee was zealous for my sake among them: therefore I haue not consumed the children of Israel in my ielousie.

¹² Wherefore say to him, Beholde, I giue vnto him my couenant of peace,

¹³ And he shall haue it, and his seede after him, euen the couenant of the priestes office for euer, because he was zealous for his God, and hath made an atonement for the children of Israel.

¹⁴ And the name of the Israelite thus slayne, which was killed with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri the sonne of Salu, prince of the familie of the Simeonites.

¹⁵ And the name of the Midianitish woman, that was slayne, was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, who was head ouer the people of his fathers house in Midian.

¹⁶ Againe ye Lord spake vnto Moses, saying,

¹⁷ Vexe the Midianites, and smite them:

¹⁸ For they trouble you with their wiles, wherewith they haue beguiled you as concerning Peor, and as concerning their sister Cozbi ye daughter of a prince of Midian, which was slayne in the day of the plague because of Peor.

⁹ And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

¹⁰ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

¹⁴ Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Sahlu, a prince of a family division among the Simeonites.

¹⁵ And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of tribes, of a family division in Midian.

¹⁶ And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying,

¹⁷ Attack the Midianites and smite them;

¹⁸ For they are enemies unto you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague for the sake of Peor.

¹¹ Phinehas the son of Elazar, the son of Aharon, the priest, hath turned away My anger from the children of Israel, in that he was zealous with My zeal among them; and I have not consumed the children of Israel in My jealousy.

¹² Say therefore to him (that), behold, I decree unto him My covenant of peace;

¹³ And he shall have it and his sons after him; a covenant of priesthood forever, because he hath been zealous before his God, and hath propitiated for the children of Israel.

¹⁴ And the name of the man of Israel who was slain with the Midianitess was Zimri bar Salu, a chief of the house of his fathers of the house of Shemeon;

¹⁵ And the name of the woman, the Midianitess, was Kosbe, the daughter of Zur, who was chief of the people of his father’s house in Midian.

¹⁶ And the Lord spake with Mosheh, saying:

¹⁷ Punish the Midianites and slay them,

¹⁸ For they afflict you with their snares, with which they ensnare you; as by the occasion of Pheor, and by that of Kosbe, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the pestilence in the matter of Pheor.

⁹ Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹⁰ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out, saying,

¹¹ “Pinchas Bronze skin, the son of Eleazar Help of God, the son of Aaron Light-bringer the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel God prevails, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel God prevails in my jealousy.

¹² Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant ·binding contract between two or more parties· of peace.

¹³ It shall be to him, and to his offspring after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel God prevails.’”

¹⁵ The name of the Midianite Descendant of Strife woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian Strife.

¹⁶ Adonai spoke to Moses Drawn out, saying,

¹⁷ “Harass the Midianites Descendants of Strife, and strike them,

¹⁸ for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian Strife, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”

⁹ Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand in number.

¹⁰ Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,

¹¹ “Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, has turned my rage away from the people of Israel because he was passionate with my zeal among them. So I have not consumed the people of Israel in my fierceness.

¹² Therefore say, 'Yahweh says, “Look, I am giving to Phinehas my covenant of peace.

¹³ For him and his descendants after him, it will be a covenant of an everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for me, his God. He has atoned for the people of Israel.”'”

¹⁷ “Treat the Midianites as enemies and attack them,

¹⁸ for they treated you like enemies with their deceitfulness. They led you into evil in the case of Peor and in the case of their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a leader in Midian, who was killed on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”

¹³ and it shall be an everlasting covenant of priesthood, as well to himself as to his seed; for he loved fervently for his God, and he hath cleansed the great trespass of the sons of Israel.

¹⁴ Forsooth the name of the man of Israel, that was slain with the woman of Midian, was Zimri, the son of Salu, duke, of the kindred and lineage of Simeon.

¹⁵ Soothly the woman of Midian that was slain together with the whoreling, was called Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, the noblest prince of Midianites.

¹⁶ And the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

¹⁷ Midianites feel you enemies, and smite ye them;

¹⁸ for also they have done enemy-like against you, and deceived you by treasons, by the idol of Peor, and by their sister Cozbi, daughter of the duke of Midian, which daughter was slain in the day of vengeance, for the sacrilege of Peor.

⁹ and four and twenty thousand of men were slain. (but by then, twenty-four thousand people had already died.)

¹⁰ And the Lord said to Moses,

¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, (the) priest, hath turned away my wrath from the sons of Israel; for he was moved against them by my fervent love, (and so for) that, I myself (did) not do away the sons of Israel in my great ferventness of vengeance. (Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, hath turned away my anger from the Israelites; for he was moved against them by his fervent love for me, and because of that, I did not do away all the Israelites in my great fervour for vengeance.)

¹² Therefore speak thou to him, Lo! I give to him the peace of my covenant, (And so tell thou him, Behold! I now give him my covenant of peace,)

¹³ and it shall be an everlasting covenant of priesthood, as well to himself as to his seed; for he loved fervently for his God, and he hath cleansed the great trespass of the sons of Israel. (and it shall be an everlasting covenant of priesthood, with him as well as with his descendants; because he fervently loved for his God, and he made amends for the great trespass of the Israelites.)

¹⁷ Midianites feel you enemies, and smite ye them; (Regard ye the Midianites as your enemies, and strike ye them down;)

¹⁸ for also they have done enemy-like against you, and deceived you by treasons, by the idol of Peor, and by their sister Cozbi, daughter of the duke of Midian, which daughter was slain in the day of vengeance, for the sacrilege of Peor. (for they were like an enemy to you, and they deceived you with treasons, first in the matter at Peor, and then with their sister Cozbi, the daughter of a leader of Midian, which daughter was killed during the plague, on the day of vengeance for the sacrilege at Peor.)

⁹ and foure and twenti thousand of men weren slayn.

¹⁰ And the Lord seide to Moises,

¹¹ Fynees, the sone of Eleazar, sone of Aaron, preest, turnede away myn yre fro the sones of Israel; for he was stirid ayens hem bi my feruent loue, that Y my silf schulde not do awai the sones of Israel in my greet hete, `ether strong veniaunce.

¹² Therfor speke thou to hym, Lo! Y yyue to hym the pees of my couenaunt,

¹³ and it schal be an euerlastynge couenaunt of preesthod, as wel to hym silf as to his seed; for he louyde feruentli for his God, and he clenside the greet trespas of the sones of Israel.

¹⁴ Forsothe the name of the man of Israel, that was slayn with the womman of Madian, was Zambri, the sone of Salu, duyk of the kynrede and lynage of Symeon.

¹⁵ Forsothe the womman of Madian that was slayn togidere, was clepid Cobri, the douyter of Sur, the nobleste prince of Madianytis.

¹⁶ And the Lord spak to Moises and seide,

¹⁷ `Madianytis feele you enemyes, and smyte ye hem;

¹⁸ for also thei diden enemyliche ayens you, and disseyueden thorow tresouns, bi the idol of Phegor, and bi `the douyter of Corbri, duyk of Madian, her sister, which douyter was sleyn in the dai of veniaunce, for the sacrilege of Phegor.

¹⁵ and the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, is Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people — of the house of a father in Midian is he.

¹⁶ And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
