⁶ And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.

¹² From thence they journeyed, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

¹³ From thence they journeyed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ Wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, And the valleys of the Arnon,

¹⁵ And the slope of the valleys That inclineth toward the dwelling of Ar, And leaneth upon the border of Moab.

¹⁶ And from thence they journeyed to Beer: that is the well whereof Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

¹⁷ Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:

¹⁸ The well, which the princes digged, Which the nobles of the people delved, With the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah;

¹⁹ and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

²⁰ and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.

²¹ And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

²² Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed thy border.

²³ And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

²⁵ And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof.

²⁶ For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.

²⁷ Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come ye to Heshbon; Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

²⁸ For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It hath devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab! Thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: He hath given his sons as fugitives, And his daughters into captivity, Unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

³⁰ We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, And we have laid waste even unto Nophah, Which reacheth unto Medeba.

³¹ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

³³ And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-staff: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel departed, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And having departed from Oboth, they encamped in Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Moab, toward the east.

¹² And thence they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zared.

¹³ And they departed thence and encamped on the other side of Arnon in the wilderness, the country which extends from the coasts of the Amorites; for Arnon is the borders of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in a book, A war of the Lord has set on fire Zoob, and the brooks of Arnon.

¹⁵ And he has appointed brooks to cause Er to dwell there; and it lies near to the coasts of Moab.

¹⁶ And thence they came to the well; this is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song at the well, Begin to sing of the well;

¹⁸ the princes digged it, the kings of the nations in their kingdom, in their lordship sank it in the rock: and they went from the well to Manthanain,

¹⁹ and from Manthanain to Naaliel, and from Naaliel to Bamoth, and from Bamoth to Janen, which is in the plain of Moab as seen from the top of the quarried rock that looks toward the wilderness.

²⁰ And Moses sent ambassadors to Seon king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying,

²¹ We will pass through thy land, we will go by the road; we will not turn aside to the field or to the vineyard.

²² We will not drink water out of thy well; we will go by the king's highway, until we have past thy boundaries.

²³ And Seon did not allow Israel to pass through his borders, and Seon gathered all his people, and went out to set the battle in array against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Jassa, and set the battle in array against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the slaughter of the sword, and they became possessors of his land, from Arnon to Jaboc, as far as the children of Amman, for Jazer is the borders of the children of Amman.

²⁵ And Israel took all their cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Esebon, and in all cities belonging to it.

²⁶ For Esebon is the city of Seon king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Moab, and they took all his land, from Aroer to Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, Come to Esebon, that the city of Seon may be built and prepared.

²⁸ For a fire has gone forth from Esebon, a flame from the city of Seon, and has consumed as far as Moab, and devoured the pillars of Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab; thou art lost, thou people of Chamos: their sons are sold for preservation, and their daughters are captives to Seon king of the Amorites.

³⁰ And their seed shall perish from Esebon to Dæbon; and their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Moab.

³¹ And Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took it, and its villages, and cast out the Amorite that dwelt there.

³³ And having returned, they went up the road that leads to Basan; and Og the king of Basan went forth to meet them, and all his people to war to Edrain.

⁶ So Yahweh sent poisonous snakes among them. Many of the people were bitten by the snakes and died.

⁷ Then the people came to Moses/me and cried out, saying, “We now know that we have sinned against Yahweh and against you. Pray to Yahweh, asking that he will take away the snakes!” So Moses/I prayed for the people.

⁸ Then Yahweh told him/me, “Make a model/image of a poisonous snake, and attach it to the top of a pole. If those who are bitten by the snakes look at that model, they will ◄recover/get well►.”

⁹ So Moses/I made a snake from bronze and attached it to the top of a pole. Then, when those who had been bitten by a snake looked at the bronze snake, they recovered!

¹⁰ Then the Israelis traveled to Oboth and ◄camped/set up their tents► there.

¹¹ Then they left there, and went to Iye-Abarim, in the desert on the eastern border of Moab.

¹² From there they traveled to the valley where the Zered riverbed is, and camped there.

¹³ Then they traveled to the north side of the Arnon River. That area is in the desert next to the land where the Amor people-group lived. The Arnon River is the boundary between Moab and where the Amor people-group lived.

¹⁴ That is why in the book called ❛The Book of the Wars of Yahweh❜ it tells about “Waheb town in the Suphah area, and the ravines there; and the Arnon River

¹⁵ and the ravines there, which extend as far as Ar village on the border of Moab.”

¹⁶ From there, the Israelis traveled to Beer. There was a well there, where Yahweh previously had said to Moses/me, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”

¹⁷ There the Israelis sang this song: “O well, give us water! Sing about this well!

¹⁸ Sing about this well which our leaders dug; they dug out the dirt with their royal scepters and their walking sticks.” Then the Israelis left that desert and went through Mattanah,

¹⁹ Nahaliel, and Bamoth villages.

²⁰ Then they went to the valley in Moab where Pisgah Mountain rises above the desert.

²¹ Then the Israelis sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amor people-group. This was the message that they/we gave him:

²² “Allow us to travel through your country. We will stay on the king's highway, the main road that goes from the south to the north, until we have finished traveling through your land. We will not walk through any field or vineyard, or drink water from your wells.”

²³ But King Sihon refused. He would not allow them to walk through his land. Instead, he sent his whole army to attack the Israelis in the desert. They attacked the Israelis at Jahaz village.

²⁴ But the Israelis completely defeated them and occupied their land, from the Arnon River in the south to the Jabbok River in the north. They stopped at the border of the land where the Ammon people-group lived, because the Ammon army was defending the border strongly.

²⁵ So the Israelis occupied all the cities and towns where the Amor people-group lived, and some of the Israelis began to live in them. They occupied Heshbon city and the nearby villages.

²⁶ Heshbon was the capital of the country. It was the city where King Sihon ruled. His army had previously defeated the army of the king of Moab, and then his people had begun to live in all of the land of Moab as far as the Arnon River in the south.

²⁷ For that reason, one of the poets wrote long ago, “Come to Heshbon, the city where King Sihon ruled. We want the city to be restored/rebuilt.

²⁸ A fire blazed from Heshbon; it burned down Ar city in Moab, it destroyed everything on the hills along the Arnon River.

²⁹ You people of Moab, terrible things have happened to you! You people who worship your god Chemosh have been ◄annihilated/wiped out►! The men who worshiped MET Chemosh have run away and are now refugees, and the women who worshiped him have been captured by the army of Sihon, the king of the Amor people-group.

³⁰ But we have defeated Sihon and those descendants of Amor, all the way from Heshbon in the north to Dibon city in the south. We have completely obliterated/destroyed them as far as Nophah and Medeba towns.”

³¹ So the Israeli people began to live in the land where the Amor people-group lived.

³² After Moses/I sent some men to explore the area near Jazer city, Israeli people began to live in all the towns in that region and expelled the Amor people-group who lived there.

³³ Then they turned north toward the Bashan region, but King Og of Bashan and all his army attacked them at Edrei town.

⁶ And the Lord sent amongst the people deadly serpents, and they bit the people, and much people of the children of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against you: pray therefore to the Lord, and let him take away the serpent from us.

⁸ And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people; and the Lord said to Moses, Make you a serpent, and put it on a signal-staff; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, every one so bitten that looks upon it shall live.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-staff: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel departed, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And having departed from Oboth, they encamped in Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Moab, towards the east.

¹² And thence they departed, and encamped in the valley of Zared.

¹³ And they departed thence and encamped on the other side of Arnon in the wilderness, the country which extends from the coasts of the Amorites; for Arnon is the borders of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in a book, A war of the Lord has set on fire Zoob, and the brooks of Arnon.

¹⁵ And he has appointed brooks to cause Er to dwell there; and it lies near to the coasts of Moab.

¹⁶ And thence they came to the well; this is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song at the well, Begin to sing of the well;

¹⁸ the princes digged it, the kings of the nations in their kingdom, in their lordship sank it in the rock: and they went from the well to Manthanain,

¹⁹ and from Manthanain to Naaliel, and from Naaliel to Bamoth, and from Bamoth to Janen, which is in the plain of Moab as seen from the top of the quarried rock that looks towards the wilderness.

²⁰ And Moses sent ambassadors to Seon king of the Amorites, with peaceful words, saying,

²¹ We will pass through your land, we will go by the road; we will not turn aside to the field or to the vineyard.

²² We will not drink water out of your well; we will go by the king's highway, until we have past your boundaries.

²³ And Seon did not allow Israel to pass through his borders, and Seon gathered all his people, and went out to set the battle in array against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Jassa, and set the battle in array against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel struck him with the slaughter of the sword, and they became possessors of his land, from Arnon to Jaboc, as far as the children of Amman, for Jazer is the borders of the children of Amman.

²⁵ And Israel took all their cities, and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Esebon, and in all cities belonging to it.

²⁶ For Esebon is the city of Seon king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Moab, and they took all his land, from Aroer to Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, Come to Esebon, that the city of Seon may be built and prepared.

²⁸ For a fire has gone forth from Esebon, a flame from the city of Seon, and has consumed as far as Moab, and devoured the pillars of Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to you, Moab; you are lost, you people of Chamos: their sons are sold for preservation, and their daughters are captives to Seon king of the Amorites.

³⁰ And their seed shall perish from Esebon to Daebon; and their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Moab.

³¹ And Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took it, and its villages, and cast out the Amorite that lived there.

³³ And having returned, they went up the road thhebraismat leads to Basan; and Og the king of Basan went forth to meet them, and all his people to war to Edrain.

¹⁹ and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

²² “Let me pass through your land. We will not turn away into field or vineyard. We will not drink of the water of the wells. We will go by the king’s highway, until we have passed your border.”

²³ Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border, but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz. He fought against Israel.

²⁴ Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was fortified.

⁷ Then the people came to Moses and said, We have done wrong in crying out against the Lord and against you: make prayer to the Lord to take away the snakes from us. So Moses made prayer for the people.

⁸ And the Lord said to Moses, Make an image of a snake and put it on a rod, and anyone who has been wounded by the snakes, looking on it will be made well.

⁹ So Moses made a snake of brass and put it on a rod; and anyone who had a snakebite, after looking on the snake of brass, was made well.

¹⁰ Then the children of Israel went on and put up their tents in Oboth.

¹¹ And journeying on again from Oboth, they put up their tents in Iye-abarim, in the waste land before Moab looking east.

¹² And moving on from there, they put up their tents in the valley of Zered.

¹³ From there they went on and put up their tents on the other side of the Arnon, which is on the waste land at the edge of the land of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the line of division between Moab and the Amorites:

¹⁴ As it says in the book of the Wars of the Lord, Vaheb in Suphah, and the valley of the Amon;

¹⁵ The slope of the valleys going down to the tents of Ar and touching the edge of Moab.

¹⁶ From there they went on to Beer, the water-spring of which the Lord said to Moses, Make the people come together and I will give them water.

¹⁷ Then Israel gave voice to this song: Come up, O water-spring, let us make a song to it:

¹⁸ The fountain made by the chiefs, made deep by the great ones of the people, with the law-givers' rod, and with their sticks. Then from the waste land they went on to Mattanah:

¹⁹ And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

²⁰ And from Bamoth to the valley in the open country of Moab, and to the top of Pisgah looking over Jeshimon.

²¹ And Israel sent men to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,

²² Let me go through your land: we will not go into field or vine-garden, or take the water of the springs; we will go by the highway till we have gone past the limits of your land.

²³ And Sihon would not let Israel go through his land; but got all his people together and went out against Israel into the waste land, as far as Jahaz, to make war on Israel.

²⁴ But Israel overcame him, and took all his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the country of the children of Ammon, for the country of the children of Ammon was strongly armed.

²⁵ And Israel took all their towns, living in Heshbon and all the towns and small places of the Amorites.

²⁶ For Heshbon was the town of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had made war against an earlier king of Moab and taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.

²⁷ So the makers of wise sayings say, Come to Heshbon, building up the town of Sihon and making it strong:

²⁸ For a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon: for the destruction of Ar in Moab, and the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁹ Sorrow is yours, O Moab! Destruction is your fate, O people of Chemosh: his sons have gone in flight, and his daughters are prisoners, in the hands of Sihon, king of the Amorites.

³⁰ They are wounded with our arrows; destruction has come on Heshbon, even to Dibon; and we have made the land waste as far as Nophah, stretching out to Medeba.

³¹ So Israel put up their tents in the land of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent men secretly to Jazer, and they took its towns, driving out the Amorites who were living there.

³³ Then turning they went up by the way of Bashan; and Og, king of Bashan, went out against them with all his people, to the fight at Edrei.

⁶ Then Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, which bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, in that we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee: pray to Jehovah that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And Jehovah said to Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, and looketh upon it, shall live.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, if a serpent had bitten any man, and he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel journeyed, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And they removed from Oboth, and encamped at Ijim-Abarim, in the wilderness that is before Moab, toward the sun-rising.

¹² From thence they removed, and encamped at the torrent Zered.

¹³ From thence they removed, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites. For the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Jehovah, Vaheb in Suphah, and the brooks of Arnon;

¹⁵ And the stream of the brooks which turneth to the dwelling of Ar, And inclineth toward the border of Moab.

¹⁶ And from thence to Beer: that is the well of which Jehovah spoke to Moses, Assemble the people, and I will give them water.

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song, Rise up, well! sing unto it:

¹⁸ Well which princes digged, which the nobles of the people hollowed out at the word of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah;

¹⁹ and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

²⁰ and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the fields of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks over the surface of the waste.

²¹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

²² Let us pass through thy land; we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink water out of the wells; on the king's road will we go until we have passed thy border.

²³ But Sihon would not suffer Israel to go through his border; and Sihon gathered all his people, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

²⁵ And Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, at Heshbon, and in all its dependent villages.

²⁶ For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore the poets say, Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established.

²⁸ For there went forth fire from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; It consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, people of Chemosh: He gave his sons that had escaped, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon the king of the Amorites.

³⁰ And we have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon; and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

³¹ And Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took its dependent villages, and he dispossessed the Amorites that were there.

³³ And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, for battle to Edrei.

⁶ Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them.

⁷ Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live.

⁹ Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth.

¹¹ And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east.

¹² And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared:

¹³ Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites.

¹⁴ Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Amen.

¹⁵ The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites.

¹⁶ When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

¹⁷ Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto:

¹⁸ The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana.

¹⁹ From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth.

²⁰ From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert.

²¹ And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying:

²² I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king’s highway, till we be past thy borders.

²³ And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa, and fought against them.

²⁴ And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison.

²⁵ So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof.

²⁶ Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominions, as far as the Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up:

²⁸ A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites.

³⁰ Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba.

³¹ So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite.

³² And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.

³³ And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai.

⁶ So the Lord sent poisonous snakes to attack them, and many Israelites were bitten and died.

⁷ The people went to see Moses and told him, “We were wrong to make complaints against the Lord and against you. Please pray to the Lord to get rid of the snakes from us.” Moses prayed to the Lord on their behalf.

⁸ The Lord told Moses, “Make a model of a snake and put it on a pole. When anyone who has been bitten looks at it, they will live.”

⁹ Moses made a snake out of bronze and put it on a pole. Those who looked at it did live.

¹⁰ The Israelites left and camped at Oboth.

¹¹ Then they moved on from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim in the desert on the east side of Moab.

¹² They left there and camped in the Valley of Zered.

¹³ Then they moved on from there and camped on the far side of the Arnon River, in the desert near Amorite territory. The Arnon River is the border between the Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ That's why the Book of the Wars of the Lord refers to “the town of Waheb in Suphah and the canyon of the Arnon,

¹⁵ the canyon slopes that reach the village of Ar that lies on the border with Moab.”

¹⁶ From there they moved on to Beer, the well where the Lord told Moses, “Have the people gather together so I can give them water.”

¹⁷ Then the Israelites sang this song: “Pour out water, well! Everyone of you sing to it!

¹⁸ The tribal chiefs dug the well; yes the leaders of the people dug the well with their rods of authority and their walking sticks.” The Israelites left the desert and carried on to Mattanah.

¹⁹ From Mattanah they traveled to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

²⁰ and from Bamoth to the valley in the territory of Moab where the top of Mount Pisgah looks down on the wastelands.

²¹ Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, with the following request:

²² “Please allow us to travel through your country. We won't cross any of your fields or vineyards, or drink water from any of your wells. We will stay on the King's Highway until we have passed through your country.”

²³ But Sihon refused to allow the Israelites to travel through his territory. Instead, he called out his whole army and went out to meet the Israelites head-on in the desert. When he arrived at Jahaz, he attacked the Israelites.

²⁴ The Israelites defeated them, killing them with their swords. They took over his land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River —but only as far as the border of the Ammonites, because it was well defended.

²⁵ The Israelites conquered all the Amorite towns and took them over, including Heshbon and its surrounding villages.

²⁶ Heshbon was the capital of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the previous king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon River.

²⁷ That's why the old songwriters wrote: “Come to Heshbon and have it be rebuilt; restore the town of Sihon!

²⁸ For a fire blazed out from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon. It burned up Ar in Moab where the rulers live on the high places of Arnon.

²⁹ What a disaster you face, Moab! You are all going to die, people of Chemosh! You handed over your sons as exiles and your daughters as prisoners to Sihon, king of the Amorites.

³⁰ But now we have defeated the Amorites! Heshbon's rule has been destroyed all the way to Dibon. We wiped them out all the way to Nophah and on to Medeba.”

³¹ The Israelites occupied the country of the Amorites.

³² Moses sent men to explore Jazer. The Israelites conquered its surrounding villages and expelled the Amorites living there.

³³ Then they continued on the road towards Bashan. Og, king of Bashan, led his whole army out to meet them head on, and fought them at Edrei.

⁶ Wherefore the Lord sent fierie serpents among ye people, which stung the people: so that many of the people of Israel died.

⁷ Therefore the people came to Moses and said, We haue sinned: for wee haue spoken against the Lord, and against thee: pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from vs: and Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And the Lord said vnto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it vp for a signe, that as many as are bitten, may looke vpon it, and liue.

⁹ So Moses made a serpent of brasse, and set it vp for a signe: and when a serpent had bitten a man, then he looked to the serpent of brasse, and liued.

¹⁰ And ye children of Israel departed thence, and pitched in Oboth.

¹¹ And they departed from Oboth, and pitched in lie-abarim, in the wildernesse, which is before Moab on the Eastside.

¹² They remoued thence, and pitched vpon the riuer of Zared.

¹³ Thence they departed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wildernesse, and commeth out of the coasts of the Amorites: (for Arnon is the border of Moab, betweene the Moabites and the Amorites)

¹⁴ Wherefore it shall be spoken in the booke of the battels of the Lord, what thing he did in the red sea, and in the riuers of Arnon,

¹⁵ And at the streame of the riuers that goeth downe to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth vpon the border of Moab.

¹⁶ And from thence they turned to Beer: the same is the well where the Lord said vnto Moses, Assemble the people, and I wil giue them water.

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song, Rise vp well, sing ye vnto it.

¹⁸ The princes digged this well, the captaines of the people digged it, euen the lawe giuer, with their staues. And from the wildernesse they came to Mattanah,

¹⁹ And from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

²⁰ And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the plaine of Moab, to the top of Pisgah that looketh toward Ieshimon.

²¹ Then Israel sent messengers vnto Sihon, King of the Amorites, saying,

²² Let me goe through thy land: we wil not turne aside into the fieldes, nor into the vineyardes, neither drinke of the waters of ye welles: we will goe by the kings way, vntill we be past thy countrey.

²³ But Sihon gaue Israel no licence to passe through his countrey, but Sihon assembled all his people, and went out against Israel into the wildernesse: and he came to Iahoz, and fought against Israel.

²⁴ But Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and conquered his land, from Arnon vnto Iabok, euen vnto ye children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

²⁵ And Israel tooke al these cities, and dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites in Heshbon and in all the villages thereof.

²⁶ For Heshbon was the citie of Sihon the king of the Amorites, which had fought beforetime against the king of the Moabites, and had taken al his land out of his hand, euen vnto Arnon.

²⁷ Wherefore they that speake in prouerbes, say, Come to Heshbon, let the citie of Sihon bee built and repaired:

²⁸ For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, and a flame from the citie of Sihon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the lords of Bamoth in Arnon.

²⁹ Wo be to thee, Moab: O people of Chemosh, thou art vndone: he hath suffered his sonnes to be pursued, and his daughters to be in captiuitie to Sihon the king of the Amorites.

³⁰ Their empire also is lost from Heshbon vnto Dibon, and wee haue destroyed them vnto Nophah, which reacheth vnto Medeba.

³¹ Thus Israel dwelt in the lande of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to searche out Iaazer, and they tooke the townes belonging thereto, and rooted out the Amorites that were there.

³³ And they turned and went vp toward Bashan: and Og the King of Bashan came out against them, hee, and all his people, to fight at Edrei.

⁶ And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

¹³ From thence they journeyed, and pitched on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites. — For Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites;

¹⁴ wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of the LORD: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of Arnon,

¹⁵ And the slope of the valleys that inclineth toward the seat of Ar, and leaneth upon the border of Moab. —

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of copper, and put it upon a pole; and it came to pass, that, when a serpent had bitten any man, and he looked up to the serpent of copper, he remained alive.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel set forward, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at 'Iye-ha'abarim, in the wilderness, which is before Moab, toward the rising of the sun.

¹² From there they set forward and encamped in the valley of Zered.

¹³ From there they set forward, and encamped on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness, and which cometh out of the boundary of the Emorites; for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and between the Emorites.

²³ But Sichon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; and Sichon assembled all his people together; and went out against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Yahaz, and fought against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from Arnon unto Yabbok, even unto the children of 'Ammon; for the border of the children of 'Ammon was strong.

²⁵ And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Emorites, in Cheshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

²⁶ For Cheshbon was the city of Sichon the king of the Emorites; and he had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, up to the Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore said the poets, Come into Cheshbon, let the city of Sichon be built and established.

²⁸ For a fire is gone out of Cheshbon, a flame from the city of Sichon: it hath consumed 'Ar-Moab, the men of the high places of the Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab! thou art lost, O people of Kemosh: he hath suffered his sons to become fugitives, and his daughters to go into captivity, unto the king of the Emorites, Sichon.

³⁰ We have thrown them down; lost is Cheshbon even unto Dibon, and we have laid waste all up to Nophach, which reacheth unto Medeba.

³¹ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Emorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Ya'zer, and they captured the villages thereof, and drove out the Emorites that were there.

³³ And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and 'Og, the king of Bashan, went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

⁶ And the Lord sent among the people deadly serpents, and they bit the people, and much people of the children of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Moses and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee: pray therefore to the Lord, and let him take away the serpent from us.

⁸ And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people; and the Lord said to Moses, Make thee a serpent, and put it on a signal-staff; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, everyone so bitten that looks upon it shall live.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-staff: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived.

¹⁰ And the children of Israel departed, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And having departed from Oboth, they encamped in Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Moab, toward the east.

¹² And thence they departed, and encamped in the Valley of Zered.

¹³ And they departed thence and encamped on the other side of Arnon in the wilderness, the country which extends from the coasts of the Amorites; for Arnon is the borders of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

¹⁴ Therefore it is said in a book, A war of the Lord has set on fire Zoob, And the brooks of Arnon.

¹⁵ And he has appointed brooks to cause Ar to dwell there; And it lies near to the coasts of Moab.

¹⁶ And thence they came to the well; this is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song at the well, Begin to sing of the well;

¹⁸ The princes dug it, The kings of the nations in their kingdom, In their lordship sank it in the rock: and they went from the well to Mattanah,

¹⁹ and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth, and from Bamoth to Janen, which is in the plain of Moab as seen from the top of the quarried rock that looks toward the wilderness.

²⁰ And Moses sent ambassadors to Sihon king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying,

²¹ We will pass through thy land, we will go by the road; we will not turn aside to the field or to the vineyard.

²² We will not drink water out of thy well; we will go by the king’s highway, until we have past thy boundaries.

²³ And Sihon did not allow Israel to pass through his borders, and Sihon gathered all his people, and went out to set the battle in array against Israel into the wilderness; and he came to Jahaz, and set the battle in array against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the slaughter of the sword, and they became possessors of his land, from Arnon to Jabbok, as far as the children of Ammon, for Jazer is the borders of the children of Ammon.

²⁵ And Israel took all their cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all cities belonging to it.

²⁶ For Heshbon is the city of Sihon king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Moab, and they took all his land, from Aroer to Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, Come to Heshbon, That the city of Sihon may be built and prepared.

²⁸ For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, And has consumed as far as Moab, And devoured the pillars of Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, Moab; Thou art lost, thou people of Chemosh: Their sons are sold for preservation, And their daughters are captives To Sihon king of the Amorites.

³⁰ And their seed shall perish from Heshbon to Dibon; And their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Moab.

³¹ And Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites.

³² And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took it, and its villages, and cast out the Amorite that dwelt there.

³³ And having returned, they went up the road that leads to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went forth to meet them, and all his people to war to Edrei.

⁶ And the Lord sent forth burning serpents among the people, and much people of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Mosheh, and said: We have sinned, for we have murmured before the Lord, and have contended with thee. Intercede before the Lord, that He may remove the serpents from among us. And Mosheh prayed for the people.

⁸ And the Lord said to Mosheh: Make thee a burning (serpent), and uplift it on an ensign; and everyone who hath been bitten, and beholdeth it, shall live (or, be saved).

⁹ And Mosheh made a serpent of brass, and set it upon an ensign; and when a serpent had bitten a man, if he looked up to the serpent of brass, he lived (or, was saved).

¹⁰ And the children of Israel journeyed and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ And they journeyed from Oboth, and encamped at the Ford of the Passengers, which is in the wilderness over against Moab, toward the sunrise.

¹² And they removed from thence, and encamped by the brook Zared.

¹³ Thence they journeyed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, that is in the wilderness that stretcheth out from the coasts of the Amoraah; for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amoraah.

¹⁴ Wherefore it is said in the Book of the Wars, That which the Lord did by the Sea of Suph, and the great deeds which (He wrought) by the torrents of Arnon,

¹⁵ And at the flowing of the streams which lead towards Lechayath, and are joined at the confine of Moab.

¹⁶ And from thence was given to them the well, which is the well whereof the Lord spake to Mosheh, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

¹⁷ Therefore sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it.

¹⁸ The well which the princes digged, the chiefs of the people cut it, the scribes with their staves; it was given to them in the wilderness.

¹⁹ And from (the time) that it was given to them it descended with them to the rivers, and from the rivers it went up with them to the height,

²⁰ And from the height to the vale which is in the fields of Moab, at the head of Ramatha, which looketh towards Beth Jeshimon.

²¹ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amoraah, saying:

²² I would pass through thy country: I will not turn aside into field or vineyard; we will not drink of the waters of the cistern; by the king’s highway will we go until we have crossed thy border.

²³ But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his coast; and Sihon gathered all his people, and came out to prevent Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and arrayed battle against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, unto the Beni Ammon; for the border of the Beni Ammon was strong.

²⁵ And Israel subdued all those cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amoraah, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

²⁶ For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amoraah; he had made war with the former king of Moab, and had taken all his territory from his hand unto Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore, say the proverbs: Come to Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be builded and finished:

²⁸ For an east wind strong as fire hath gone out from Heshbon, and the servants of war (as) with a flame from the city of Sihon: they have slain the people who inhabited Lechayath of Moab, the priests who ministered in the idol-temple in the height of Arnona.

²⁹ Woe to you, Moabaee, you are undone, ye people who have worshipped Kemosh; he hath delivered up his besieged sons and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon, king of the Amoraah.

³⁰ And the kingdom hath ceased from Heshbon, the dominion hath passed away from Dibon, they have laid waste unto Nophak which joineth Medeba.

³¹ And Israel dwelt in the land of the Amoraah.

³² And Mosheh sent to explore Jaazer; and they subdued the towns, and drave out the Amoraah who were therein.

³³ And they turned and went up by the way of Mathnan; and Og, king of Mathnan, came out to meet them, he and all his people, to give battle at Edrei.

⁶ Adonai sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel God prevails died.

⁷ The people came to Moses Drawn out, and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against Adonai , and against you. Pray to Adonai , that he take away the serpents from us.” Moses Drawn out prayed for the people.

⁸ Adonai said to Moses Drawn out, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it up on a pole. It shall happen, that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

⁹ Moses Drawn out made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole. If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.

¹⁰ The children of Israel God prevails traveled, and encamped in Oboth.

¹¹ They traveled from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab From father, toward the sunrise.

¹² From there they traveled, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

²⁴ Israel attacked the army of Sihon with the edge of the sword and took their land from the Arnon to the Jabbok river, as far as the land of the people of Ammon. Now the border of the people of Ammon was fortified.

²⁵ Israel took all the Amorite cities and lived in all of them, including Heshbon and all of its villages.

²⁶ Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab. Sihon had taken all his land from his territory to the Arnon River.

²⁷ That is why those who speak in proverbs say, “Come to Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be rebuilt and established again.

²⁸ A fire blazed from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon that devoured Ar of Moab, and the owners of the high places of Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has made his sons to be fugitives and his daughters to be prisoners of Sihon king of the Amorites.

³⁰ But we have conquered Sihon. Heshbon is devastated all the way to Dibon. We have defeated them all the way to Nophah, which reaches to Medeba.”

³¹ So Israel began to live in the Amorites' land.

³² Then Moses sent men to look at Jazer. They took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.

¹³ which they left, and setted tents against Arnon, which is in the desert, and it appeareth in the coasts of Amorites. Forsooth Arnon is the term of Moab, and parteth Moabites and Amorites.

¹⁵ the hard rocks of the strands were bowed down, that they shall rest in Ar, or abide there, and should lie in the coasts of Moabites.

²⁰ Bamoth is a valley in the country of Moab, in the top of Pisgah, that beholdeth against the desert.

²¹ Soothly Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of Amorites, and said,

²² I beseech thee, that it be leaveful to me to pass through thy land; we shall not bow into thy fields, and vineries or vines; we shall not drink waters of thy pits; we shall go in the king’s way, till we pass by thy terms.

²³ Which would not grant that Israel should pass through his coasts, but rather, when his host was gathered, he went out against Israel, into desert. And he came into Jahaz, and fought against Israel;

²⁴ of whom he was smitten in the sharpness of sword, and his land was wielded of Israel from Arnon unto Jabbok, and Ammon’s sons, or his host; for the coasts of Ammonites were holden with strong help, or power.

²⁵ Therefore Israel took all his cities, and dwelled in the cities of Amorites, that is, in Heshbon, and in his towns.

²⁶ The city of Heshbon was Sihon’s, king of Amorites, which Sihon fought against the king of Moab, and took all the land that was of his lordship, till to Arnon.

²⁷ Therefore it is said in proverb, Come ye into Heshbon, be it builded, and made, the city of Sihon;

²⁸ fire went out of Heshbon, flame went out of the city of Sihon, and devoured Ar of Moabites, and the dwellers of the high places of Arnon.

²⁹ Moab, woe to thee! thou, people of Chemosh, hast perished; it gave the sons thereof into flight, and the daughters into captivity to Sihon, king of Amorites;

³⁰ the yoke, or lordship, of them perished, from Heshbon unto Dibon; the weary men came into Nophah, and unto Medeba.

³¹ And so Israel dwelled in the land of Amorites.

³² And Moses sent men that should espy Jaazer, whose towns they took, and wielded the dwellers.

³³ And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, with all his people, came against them, to fight in Edrei.

⁶ Wherefore the Lord sent fired serpents/fiery adders into the people; at the wounds of which serpents, and (after) the deaths of full many men, (And so the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people; and they bit many of them, and after many people had died,)

⁷ they came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we spake against the Lord, and thee; pray thou (the Lord), that he take away from us the serpents, (or pray thou to the Lord, that he take these snakes away from us). And Moses prayed for the people;

⁸ and the Lord said to him, Make thou a brazen serpent, and set thou it in a perch; he that is smitten and beholdeth it, shall live. (and the Lord said to him, Make thou a bronze snake, and put it up on a pole; he who is struck, or is bitten, and seeth it, shall live.)

⁹ Therefore Moses made a serpent of brass, and setted (it) in a perch; and (those) men (who were) hurt, and beholding it, were healed. (And so Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it up on a pole; and those who were bitten, and looked at it, were healed.)

¹⁰ And the sons of Israel went forth, and setted tents in Oboth; (And the Israelites went forth, and pitched their tents at Oboth;)

¹¹ from whence they went forth, and setted tents in Iyeabarim, in the wilderness that beholdeth Moab, against the east coast. (and they went forth from there, and pitched their tents in Iyeabarim, in the wilderness on Moab’s eastern border.)

¹² And they moved from thence, and came to the strand of Zared; (And they went from there, and came to the valley of the Zared River;)

¹³ which they left, and setted tents against (the) Arnon, which is in the desert, and it appeareth in the coasts of Amorites. Forsooth (the) Arnon is the term of Moab, and parteth Moabites and Amorites. (and they left there, and pitched their tents on the north side of the Arnon River, which is in the wilderness, that goeth into the land of the Amorites. The Arnon River is the border of Moab, and it separateth the Moabites and the Amorites.)

¹⁴ Wherefore it is said in the book of battles of the Lord, As he did in the Red Sea, so he shall do in the strands of (the) Arnon; (And so it is said in the Book of the Battles of the Lord, As he did at the Red Sea, so he also did at the Arnon River,)

¹⁵ the hard rocks of the strands were bowed down, that they shall rest in Ar, or abide there, and should lie in the coasts of Moabites. (and from the cliffs of the river, down to the city of Ar, that sitteth on the border of Moab.)

¹⁶ From that place (they went to where) the well appeared, of which the Lord spake to Moses, Gather thou together the people, and I shall give water to it. (From there they went to Beer, that is, The Well, of which the Lord spoke to Moses, and said, Gather thou the people together, and I shall give them water.)

¹⁷ Then Israel sang this song, The water of the well, ascend up; they sang together, (Then Israel sang this song, Go ye up, water of the well; yea, we sing to thee,)

¹⁸ The well which the princes digged, and the dukes of the multitude made ready, in the giver of the law, and in their staves, (or The well from the Giver of the Law, which the leaders dug, yea, which the leaders of the multitude brought forth with their staffs). And (then) they went forth from the wilderness to Mattanah,

¹⁹ from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel into Bamoth;

²⁰ Bamoth is a valley in the country of Moab, in the top of Pisgah, that beholdeth against the desert. (and from Bamoth to the valley in the country of Moab, below the top of Mount Pisgah, that looketh towards Jeshimon, that is, towards the wilderness.)

²¹ Soothly Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of Amorites, and said, (And the Israelites sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, and they said,)

²² I beseech thee, that it be leaveful to me to pass through thy land; we shall not bow into thy fields, and vineries; we shall not drink waters of thy wells; we shall go in the king’s way, till we pass (by) thy terms. (We beseech thee, that it be lawful for us to pass through thy land; we shall not go into thy fields, or into thy vineyards; we shall not drink any water from thy wells; we shall go on the king’s highway, until we go out again over thy border.)

²³ Which would not grant that Israel should pass through his coasts, but rather, when his host was gathered, he went out against Israel, into desert. And he came into Jahaz, and fought against Israel; (But Sihon would not allow the Israelites to pass through his land, but rather, when his host was gathered together, he went out into the wilderness against them. And he came into Jahaz, and fought against the Israelites;)

²⁴ of whom he was smitten in the sharpness of sword, and his land was wielded of Israel from (the) Arnon unto (the) Jabbok, and Ammon’s sons, or his host; for the coasts of Ammonites were holden with strong help, or power. (but Sihon and the Amorites were struck down by the sharpness of the Israelites’ swords, and his land was taken by them, from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, that is, up to the land of the Ammonites; for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.)

²⁵ Therefore Israel took all his cities, and dwelled in the cities of Amorites, that is, in Heshbon, and in his towns. (And so the Israelites took all the cities of the Amorites, and lived in them, that is, in Heshbon, and its towns.)

²⁶ The city of Heshbon was Sihon’s, king of Amorites, which Sihon fought against the king of Moab, and took all the land that was of his lordship, till to (the) Arnon. (The city of Heshbon was Sihon’s, the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the king of Moab, and had taken all the land that was under his rule, unto the Arnon River.)

²⁷ Therefore it is said in proverb, Come ye into Heshbon, be it builded (again), and (re)made, the city of Sihon; (And so it is said in a proverb, Come ye into Heshbon, let Sihon’s city be rebuilt, and be remade;)

²⁸ fire went out of Heshbon, flame went out of the city of Sihon, and devoured (the city of) Ar of (the) Moabites, and the dwellers of the high places of (the) Arnon (or and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon River).

²⁹ Moab, woe to thee! thou, people of Chemosh, hast perished; it gave the sons thereof into flight, and the daughters into captivity to Sihon, king of Amorites; (Moab, woe to thee! O people of Chemosh, now ye have perished; thy god hath given his sons into flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon, the king of the Amorites;)

³⁰ the yoke, or lordship, of them perished, (or their yoke, or their rule, hath now ended), from Heshbon unto Dibon; the weary men came into Nophah, and unto Medeba.

³¹ And so Israel dwelled in the land of (the) Amorites.

³² And Moses sent men that should espy Jaazer, whose towns they took, and wielded the dwellers. (And Moses sent men to spy out Jaazer, and then they took it, and its towns, and drove out all of its inhabitants.)

³³ And they turned themselves (or And then they turned), and went up by the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, with all his people, came against them, to fight in Edrei.

⁶ Wherfor the Lord sente `firid serpentis in to the puple; at the woundis of whiche serpentis, and the dethis of ful many men,

⁷ thei camen to Moyses, and seiden, We synneden, for we spaken ayens the Lord and thee; preie thou, that he take awey fro vs the serpentis.

⁸ And Moises preiede for the puple; and the Lord seide to hym, Make thou a serpent of bras, and sette thou it for a signe ; he that is smytun and biholdith it, schal lyue.

⁹ Therfor Moyses made a serpent of bras, and settide for a signe; and men smytun and biholdynge it, weren heelid.

¹⁰ And the sones of Israel yeden forth,

¹¹ and settiden tentis in Oboth; fro whennus thei yeden forth, and settiden tentis in Neabarym, in the wildirnesse, that biholdith Moab, ayens the eest coost.

¹² And thei moueden fro thennus, and camen to the stronde of Zareth;

¹³ which thei leften, and settiden tentis ayens Arnon, which is in the deseert, and apperith in the coostis of Amorrei. Forsothe Arnon is the terme of Moab, and departith Moabitis and Ammoreis.

¹⁴ Wherfor it is seid in the book of batels of the Lord, As he dide in the reed see, so he schal do in the strondis of Arnon;

¹⁵ the harde rochis of the strondis weren bowid, that tho schulen reste in Arnon, and schulden ligge in the coostis of Moabitis.

¹⁶ Fro that place the pit apperide, of which the Lord spak to Moyses, Gadere thou the puple, and Y schal yyue watir to it.

¹⁷ Thanne Israel soong this song, The pit stie;

¹⁸ thei sungen togidere, The pit which the princes diggiden, and the duykis of the multitude maden redi, in the yyuere of the lawe, and in her stauys. And thei yeden forth fro the wildirnesse to Mathana,

¹⁹ fro Mathana to Naaliel, fro Naaliel in to Bamoth;

²⁰ Bamoth is a valey in the cuntrey of Moab, in the cop of Phasga, that biholdith ayens the deseert.

²¹ Forsothe Israel sente messangeris to Seon, kyng of Ammorreis, and seide,

²² Y biseche that it be leueful to me to passe thorou thi loond; we schulen not bowe in to the feeldis and vyneris; we schulen not drynke watris of pittis; we schulen go in the kyngis weie, til we passen thi termes.

²³ Which nolde graunte that Israel schulde passe thury hise coostis, but rather, whanne the oost was gaderid, he yede out ayens Israel, in to deseert. And he cam in to Yasa, and fauyt ayens Israel;

²⁴ of whom he was smytun in the scharpnesse of swerd, and his lond was weldid fro Arnon `til to Jeboth and `the sones of Amon; for the termes of Amonytis weren holdun bi strong help.

²⁵ Therfor Israel took alle `the citees of hym, and dwelliden in the citees of Amorrei, that is, in Esebon, and hise townes.

²⁶ The citee of Esebon was Seons, kyng of Ammorei, which Seon fauyt ayens the kyng of Moab, and took al the lond that was of his lordschip, `til to Arnon.

²⁷ Therfor it is seid in prouerbe, Come ye in to Esebon, be it bildid, and maad the citee of Seon;

²⁸ fier yede out of Esebon, flawme yede out of the citee `ethir greet castel of Seon, and deuouryde Ar of Moabitis, and the dwelleris of the `hiye places of Arnon.

²⁹ Moab, wo to thee! thou, puple of Chamos, perischidist; it yaf the sones therof in to fliyt, and the douytris in to caitifte to Seon, kyng of Ammoreis;

³⁰ the yok of hem perischide, fro Esebon `til to Dibon; the wery men camen in to Jophe, and `til to Medaba.

³¹ And so Israel dwellide in the lond of Ammorrey.

³² And Moises sente men that schulden aspie Jaser, whos `townes thei token, and weldiden the dwelleris.

³³ And thei turniden hem silf, and stieden bi the weie of Basan. And Og, the kyng of Basan, with al his puple cam ayens hem, to fiyte in Edray.

⁶ And Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;

⁷ and the people come in unto Moses and say, 'We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.

⁸ And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Make for thee a burning serpent, and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it — he hath lived.

⁹ And Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass — he hath lived.

¹⁰ And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

¹¹ And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that is on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

¹² From thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.

¹³ From thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which is in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;

¹⁴ therefore it is said in a book, 'The wars of Jehovah,' — 'Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;

¹⁵ And the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'

¹⁶ And from thence they journeyed to Beer; it is the well concerning which Jehovah said to Moses, 'Gather the people, and I give to them — water.'

¹⁷ Then singeth Israel this song, concerning the well — they have answered to it:

¹⁸ 'A well — digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness they journeyed to Mattanah,

¹⁹ and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

²⁰ and from Bamoth in the valley which is in the field of Moab to the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.

²¹ And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,

²² 'Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'

²³ And Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.

²⁴ And Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok — unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon is strong.

²⁵ And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

²⁶ for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

²⁷ therefore those using similes say — 'Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

²⁸ For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

²⁹ Woe to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape — Also his daughters — Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite — Sihon!

³⁰ And we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which is unto Medeba.'

³¹ And Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,

³² and Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who is there,

³³ and turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, at Edrei.
