¹⁶ These are they that were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

¹⁷ And Moses and Aaron took these men that are mentioned by name:

¹⁸ and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

¹⁹ As Jehovah commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

²⁰ And the children of Reuben, Israel’s first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

²¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

²² Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

²³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

²⁴ Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

²⁵ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

²⁶ Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

²⁷ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

²⁸ Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

⁴³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ These are they that were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house.

⁴⁵ So all they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

⁴⁶ even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

⁴⁸ For Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

⁴⁹ Only the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel;

⁵⁰ but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

⁵¹ And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

⁵² And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts.

⁵³ But the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

⁵⁴ Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses, so did they.

¹⁸ And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the month in the second year; and they registered them after their lineage, after their families, after the number of their names, from twenty years old and upwards, every male according to their number:

¹⁹ as the Lord commanded Moses, so they were numbered in the wilderness of Sina.

²⁰ And the sons of Ruben the first-born of Israel according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their heads, were—all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that went out with the host—

²¹ the numbering of them of the tribe of Ruben, was forty-six thousand and four hundred.

²² For the children of Symeon according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out with the host,

²³ the numbering of them of the tribe of Symeon, was fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

²⁴ For the sons of Juda according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, all males from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes forth with the host,

²⁵ the numbering of them of the tribe of Juda, was seventy-four thousand and six hundred.

²⁷ the numbering of them of the tribe of Issachar, was fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

⁴¹ the numbering of them of the tribe of Aser, was forty and one thousand and five hundred.

⁴² For the sons of Nephthali according to their kindreds, according to their divisions, according to the houses of their families, according to the number of their names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, every one who goes forth with the host,

⁴³ the numbering of them of the tribe of Nephthali, was fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ This is the numbering which Moses and Aaron and the rulers of Israel, being twelve men, conducted: there was a man for each tribe, they were according to the tribe of the houses of their family.

⁴⁵ And the whole numbering of the children of Israel with their host from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out to set himself in battle array in Israel, came to

⁴⁶ six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites of the tribe of their family were not counted among the children of Israel.

⁴⁸ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁹ See, thou shalt not muster the tribe of Levi, and thou shalt not take their numbers, in the midst of the children of Israel.

⁵⁰ And do thou set the Levites over the tabernacle of witness, and over all its furniture, and over all things that are in it; and they shall do service in it, and they shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

⁵¹ And in removing the tabernacle, the Levites shall take it down, and in pitching the tabernacle they shall set it up: and let the stranger that advances to touch it die.

⁵² And the children of Israel shall encamp, every man in his own order, and every man according to his company, with their host.

⁵³ But let the Levites encamp round about the tabernacle of witness fronting it, and so there shall be no sin among the children of Israel; and the Levites themselves shall keep the guard of the tabernacle of witness.

⁵⁴ And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

⁴⁴ This is the numbering which Moses and Aaron and the rulers of Israel, being twelve men, conducted: there was a man for each tribe, they were according to the tribe of the houses of their family.

⁴⁵ And the whole numbering of the children of Israel with their host from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out to set himself in battle array in Israel, came to

⁴⁷ But the Levites of the tribe of their family were not counted among the children of Israel.

⁴⁸ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁴ These are they that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers’ house.

⁴⁵ So all they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

⁴⁶ even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

⁵³ But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

⁵⁴ Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

¹⁶ Those were the men whom Yahweh chose from the people. They were leaders of their tribes. They were the chief men of the clans of the Israeli people.

¹⁷ Aaron and Moses/I summoned all these leaders,

¹⁸ and they gathered all of the people together on that same day. They listed/wrote down the names of all the men who were at least 20 years old, and with their names they wrote the names of their clans and their family groups

¹⁹ just as Moses/I had commanded. They wrote the names while ◄the Israelis/we► were there in the Sinai Desert.

²⁰ This is a list of the number of men who were at least twenty years old and able to fight in battles, and the names of their tribes: There were 46,500 men from the tribe of Reuben (who was Jacob's oldest son); there were 59,300 men from the tribe of Simeon; there were 45,560 men from the tribe of Gad; there were 74,600 men from the tribe of Judah; there were 54,400 men from the tribe of Issachar; there were 57,400 men from the tribe of Zebulun; there were 40,500 men from the tribe of Ephraim; there were 32,200 men from the tribe of Manasseh; there were 35,400 men from the tribe of Benjamin; there were 62,700 men from the tribe of Dan; there were 41,500 men from the tribe of Asher; there were 53,400 men from the tribe of Naphtali.

⁴⁴ That was the number of men from each tribe that Aaron and Moses/I and the twelve leaders of the tribes of Israel listed, along with the names of their clans.

⁴⁶ The total was 603,550 men.

⁴⁷ But this number did not include the names of the men of the tribe of Levi,

⁴⁸ because Yahweh had said to Moses/me,

⁴⁹ “When you ◄count/write the names of► the men of the tribes of Israel, do not count the men in the tribe of Levi.

⁵⁰ Appoint the male descendants of Levi to take care of the Sacred Tent and the chest inside it that contains the tablets on which are written the Ten Commandments. They must also take care of the other things that are inside the tent. When you travel, they are the ones who must carry the tent and all the things that are inside it, and they must take care of it and set up their tents around it.

⁵¹ Whenever it is time for all of you to move to another location, the descendants of Levi are the ones who must dismantle the tent. And when it is time to stop traveling, they are the ones who must set up the Sacred Tent again. Any other person who goes near the Sacred Tent to do this work must be executed.

⁵² The people of each Israeli tribe must set up their tents in their own area, and they must set up a flag/banner that represents their tribe.

⁵³ But the male descendants of Levi must set up their tents around the Sacred Tent, in order to protect the other Israeli people from being punished MTY by Yahweh for coming close to the Sacred Tent. The descendants of Levi are the ones who must stand around the Sacred Tent to guard it.”

⁵⁴ So the Israeli people did everything just like Yahweh had commanded Moses/me.

³⁴ Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

³⁵ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

³⁶ Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

³⁷ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty-five thousand four hundred.

³⁸ Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

³⁹ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Dan, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred.

⁴⁰ Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

⁴¹ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred.

⁴² Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

⁴³ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

⁴⁴ These are those who were counted, whom Moses and Aaron counted, and the twelve men who were princes of Israel, each one for his fathers’ house.

⁴⁵ So all those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel—

⁴⁶ all those who were counted were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not counted among them.

⁴⁸ For Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁹ “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel;

⁵⁰ but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it.

⁵¹ When the tabernacle is to move, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The stranger who comes near shall be put to death.

⁵² The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their divisions.

⁵³ But the Levites shall encamp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel. The Levites shall be responsible for the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”

⁵⁴ Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that Yahweh commanded Moses, so they did.

¹⁰ Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

¹⁶ These are those who were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel.

¹⁷ Moses and Aaron took these men who are mentioned by name.

¹⁸ They assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their ancestry by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, one by one.

¹⁹ As the LORD commanded Moses, so he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai.

²⁰ The children of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

²¹ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand and five hundred.

²² Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, those who were counted of it, according to the number of the names, one by one, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

²³ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand and three hundred.

²⁴ Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

²⁵ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty-five thousand and six hundred and fifty.

²⁶ Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

²⁷ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Judah, were seventy-four thousand and six hundred.

²⁸ Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

²⁹ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand and four hundred.

³⁰ Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

³¹ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand and four hundred.

⁴² Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:

⁴³ those who were counted of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ These are those who were counted, whom Moses and Aaron counted, and the twelve men who were princes of Israel, each one for his fathers’ house.

⁴⁵ So all those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel—

⁴⁶ all those who were counted were six hundred and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not counted amongst them.

⁴⁸ For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁹ “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, neither shall you take a census of them amongst the children of Israel;

¹⁶ These are the men named out of all the people, chiefs of their fathers' houses, heads of the tribes of Israel.

¹⁷ And Moses and Aaron took these men, marked out by name;

¹⁸ And they got together all the people on the first day of the second month; and everyone made clear his family and his father's house, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and over.

¹⁹ As the Lord had given orders to Moses, so they were numbered by him in the waste place of Sinai.

²⁰ The generations of the sons of Reuben, the oldest son of Israel, were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over, who was able to go to war;

²¹ Forty-six thousand, five hundred of the tribe of Reuben were numbered.

²² The generations of the sons of Simeon were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over, who was able to go to war;

²³ Fifty-nine thousand, three hundred of the tribe of Simeon were numbered.

²⁴ The generations of the sons of Gad were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

²⁵ Forty-five thousand, six hundred and fifty of the tribe of Gad were numbered.

²⁶ The generations of the sons of Judah were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

²⁷ Seventy-four thousand, six hundred of the tribe of Judah were numbered.

²⁸ The generations of the sons of Issachar were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

²⁹ Fifty-four thousand, four hundred of the tribe of Issachar were numbered.

³⁰ The generations of the sons of Zebulun were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

³¹ Fifty-seven thousand, four hundred of the tribe of Zebulun were numbered.

³² The generations of the sons of Joseph were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

³³ Forty thousand, five hundred of the tribe of Ephraim were numbered.

³⁴ The generations of the sons of Manasseh were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

³⁵ Thirty-two thousand, two hundred of the tribe of Manasseh were numbered.

³⁶ The generations of the sons of Benjamin were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

³⁷ Thirty-five thousand, four hundred of the tribe of Benjamin were numbered.

³⁸ The generations of the sons of Dan were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years and over who was able to go to war;

³⁹ Sixty-two thousand, seven hundred of the tribe of Dan were numbered.

⁴⁰ The generations of the sons of Asher were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

⁴¹ Forty-one thousand, five hundred of the tribe of Asher were numbered.

⁴² The generations of the sons of Naphtali were numbered by their families and their fathers' houses, every male of twenty years old and over who was able to go to war;

⁴³ Fifty-three thousand, four hundred of the tribe of Naphtali were numbered.

⁴⁴ These are they who were numbered by Moses and Aaron and by the twelve chiefs of Israel, one from every tribe.

⁴⁵ So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their families, all those of twenty years old and over who were able to go to war,

⁴⁶ Were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ But the Levites, of the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.

⁴⁸ For the Lord said to Moses,

⁴⁹ Only the tribe of Levi is not to be numbered among the children of Israel,

⁵⁰ But to them you are to give the care of the Tent of meeting with its vessels and everything in it: they are to take up the Tent, and be responsible for everything to do with it, and put up their tents round it.

⁵¹ And when the Tent of meeting goes forward, the Levites are to take it down; and when it is to be put up, they are to do it: any strange person who comes near it is to be put to death.

⁵² The children of Israel are to put up their tents, every man in his tent-circle round his flag.

⁵³ But the tents of the Levites are to be round the Tent of meeting, so that wrath may not come on the children of Israel: the Tent of meeting is to be in the care of the Levites.

⁵⁴ So the children of Israel did as the Lord had given orders to Moses.

¹⁸ and gathered the whole assembly together on the first of the second month. And they declared their pedigrees after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, according to their polls.

¹⁹ As Jehovah had commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

²⁰ And the sons of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

²¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.

²² Of the sons of Simeon: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, those that were numbered of them, by the number of the names, according to their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

²³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

²⁴ Of the sons of Gad: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

²⁸ Of the sons of Issachar: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

²⁹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.

³⁰ Of the sons of Zebulun: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

³¹ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

³² Of the sons of Joseph: of the children of Ephraim: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

³³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.

⁴⁰ Of the sons of Asher: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

⁴² Of the sons of Naphtali: their generations, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, by the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service:

⁴³ those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.

⁴⁴ These are those that were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, the twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.

⁴⁵ And all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, according to their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that went forth to military service in Israel,

⁵² And the children of Israel shall encamp every man in his camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts;

⁵³ but the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there come not wrath upon the assembly of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.

⁵⁴ And the children of Israel did so; according to all that Jehovah had commanded Moses, so did they.

¹³ Of Aser, Phegiel the son of Ochran.

¹⁴ Of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Duel.

¹⁵ Of Nephtali, Ahira the son of Enan.

¹⁶ These are the most noble princes of the multitude by their tribes and kindreds, and the chiefs of the army of Israel:

¹⁷ Whom Moses and Aaron took with all the multitude of the common people:

¹⁸ And assembled them on the first day of the second month, reckoning them up by the kindreds, and houses, and families, and heads, and names of every one from twenty years old and upward,

¹⁹ As the Lord had commanded Moses. And they were numbered in the desert of Sinai.

²⁰ Of Ruben the eldest son of Israel, by their generations and families and houses and names of every head, all that were of the male sex, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go forth to war,

²¹ Were forty-six thousand five hundred.

²² Of the sons of Simeon by their generations and families, and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names and heads of every one, all that were of the male sex, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go forth to war,

²³ Fifty-nine thousand three hundred.

²⁴ Of the sons of Gad, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,

²⁵ Forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

²⁹ Were reckoned up fifty-four thousand four hundred.

³⁰ Of the sons of Zabulon, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,

³¹ Fifty-seven thousand four hundred.

³² Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,

³³ Forty thousand five hundred.

³⁴ Moreover of the sons of Manasses, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that could go forth to war,

⁴² Of the sons of Nephtali, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,

⁴³ Fifty-three thousand four hundred.

⁴⁴ These era they who were numbered by Moses and Aaron, and the twelve princes of Israel, every one by the houses of their kindreds.

⁴⁵ And the whole number of the children of Israel by their houses and families, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go to war,

⁴⁶ Were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty men.

⁴⁷ But the Levites in the tribes of their families were not numbered with them.

⁴⁸ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

⁴⁹ Number not the tribe of Levi, neither shalt thou put down the sum of them with the children of Israel:

⁵⁰ But appoint them over the tabernacle of the testimony, and all the vessels thereof, and whatsoever pertaineth to the ceremonies. They shall carry the tabernacle and all the furniture thereof: and they shall minister, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

⁵¹ When you are to go forward, the Levites shall take down the tabernacle: when you are to camp, they shall set it up. What stranger soever cometh to it, shall be slain.

⁵² And the children of Israel shall camp every man by his troops and bands and army.

⁵³ But the Levites shall pitch their tents round about the tabernacle, lest there come indignation upon the multitude of the children of Israel, and they shall keep watch, and guard the tabernacle of the testimony.

⁵⁴ And the children of Israel did according to all things which the Lord had commanded Moses.

⁹ from the tribe of Zebulun, Eliab, son of Helon;

¹⁰ from the sons of Joseph: from the tribe of Ephraim, Elishama, son of Ammihud, and from the tribe of Manasseh, Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur;

¹¹ from the tribe of Benjamin, Abidan, son of Gideoni;

¹² from the tribe of Dan, Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai;

¹³ from the tribe of Asher, Pagiel, son of Ocran;

¹⁴ from the tribe of Gad, Eliasaph, son of Deuel;

¹⁵ and from the tribe of Naphtali, Ahira, son of Enan.”

¹⁶ These were the men chosen from the Israelite community. They were the leaders of their fathers' tribes; the heads of the families of Israel.

¹⁷ Moses and Aaron summoned these men who had been selected by name.

¹⁸ They had all the Israelites gather together on the first day of the second month, and recorded the people's genealogy according to their tribe and family, and counted up the names of all those aged twenty or older,

¹⁹ as the Lord had told Moses to do. Moses conducted this census in the Sinai desert.

²⁰ The descendants of Reuben, (he was Israel's firstborn son), men aged twenty or over, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

²¹ from the tribe of Reuben totaled 46,500.

²² The descendants of Simeon, men aged twenty or over, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

²³ from the tribe of Simeon totaled 59,300.

²⁴ The descendants of Gad, men aged twenty or over, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

²⁵ from the tribe of Gad totaled 45,650.

²⁶ The descendants of Judah, men aged twenty or older, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

²⁷ from the tribe of Judah, totaled 74,600.

²⁸ The descendants of Issachar, men aged twenty or older, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

²⁹ from the tribe of Issachar, totaled 54,400.

³⁰ The descendants of Zebulun, men aged twenty or older, were recorded by name according to the genealogical records of their tribe and families. All those registered who could serve in the army

⁴⁷ However, the Levites were not registered with the others according to their tribe and families.

⁴⁸ This was because the Lord had told Moses,

⁴⁹ “Don't register the tribe of Levi; don't count them in the census with the other Israelites.

⁵⁰ Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle and of the Testimony, as well as all its furniture and everything it contains. They are the ones responsible for carrying the Tabernacle and all its items. They are to care for it, and to make their camp around it.

⁵¹ When it's time to move the Tabernacle, the Levites shall take it down, and when it's time to make camp, the Levites shall put it up. Any outsider who goes near it must be put to death.

⁵² The Israelites are to make camp according to their tribal divisions, each person in their own camp under their own flag.

⁵³ But the Levites are to set up their camp around the Tabernacle of the Testimony to stop anyone making me angry with the Israelites. The Levites are responsible for looking after the Tabernacle of the Testimony.”

¹⁸ And they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the month in the second year; and they registered them after their lineage, after their families, after the number of their names, from twenty years old and upward, every male according to their number:

¹⁹ as the Lord commanded Moses, so they were numbered in the wilderness of Sinai.

⁴⁴ This is the numbering which Moses and Aaron and the rulers of Israel, being twelve men, conducted: there was a man for each tribe, they were according to the tribe of the houses of their family.

⁴⁵ And the whole numbering of the children of Israel with their host from twenty years old and upward, every one that goes out to set himself in battle array in Israel, came to

⁴⁷ But the Levites of the tribe of their family were not counted among the children of Israel.

⁵³ But the Levites shall dwell round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there may not be wrath upon the congregation of the sons of Israel; and the Levites shall watch the watching of the tabernacle of testimony.

¹⁹ Then Moses recorded their numbers in the wilderness of Sinai, as Yahweh had commanded him to do.

²⁰ From the descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, were counted all the names of each and every man twenty years old or older able to go to war, from the records of their ancestor's clans and families.

²¹ They counted 46,500 men from the tribe of Reuben.

²² From the descendants of Simeon were counted all the names of each and every man twenty years old or older able to go to war, from the records of their ancestor's clans and families.

⁴⁴ Moses and Aaron counted all these men, together with the twelve men who were leading the twelve tribes of Israel.

⁴⁵ So all the men of Israel from twenty years old and older, all who could fight in war, were counted in each of their families.

⁴⁶ They counted 603,550 men.

⁴⁷ But the men who were descended from Levi were not counted,

⁴⁸ because Yahweh had said to Moses,

⁴⁹ “You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the total of the people of Israel.

⁵⁰ Instead, assign the Levites to care for the tabernacle of the covenant decrees, and to care for all the furnishings in the tabernacle and for everything in it. The Levites must carry the tabernacle, and they must carry the tabernacle's furnishings. They must care for the tabernacle and make their camp around it.

⁵¹ When the tabernacle is to move to another place, the Levites must take it down. When the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites must set it up. Any stranger who comes near the tabernacle must be killed.

⁵² When the people of Israel set up their tents, each man must do so near the banner that belongs to his armed group.

⁵³ However, the Levites must set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant decrees so that my anger does not come upon the people of Israel. The Levites must care for the tabernacle of the covenant decrees.”

²⁸ Of the sons of Issachar, by their generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that went forth to battles,

²⁹ were numbered four and fifty thousand and four hundred.

³⁰ Of the sons of Zebulun, by generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

³² Of the sons of Joseph, of the sons of Ephraim, by generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

³⁴ Forsooth of the sons of Manasseh, by their generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

³⁶ Of the sons of Benjamin, by generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

³⁷ five and thirty thousand and four hundred.

³⁸ Of the sons of Dan, by generations, and meines, and houses of their kin-dreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

³⁹ two and sixty thousand and seven hundred.

⁴⁰ Of the sons of Asher, by gener-ations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

⁴¹ forty thousand and a thousand and five hundred.

⁴² Of the sons of Naphtali, by generations, and meines, and houses of their kindreds, were numbered, by the names of all, from twenty years and above, all men that might go forth to battles,

⁴³ three and fifty thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ These men it be, which Moses and Aaron and the twelve princes of Israel numbered, each by their houses and kindreds.

⁴⁵ And all men of the sons of Israel, by their houses, and meines, from twenty years and above, that might go forth to battles,

⁴⁶ were all together six hundred thousand and three thousand men, and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ Soothly the deacons in the lineage of their meines were not numbered with them.

⁴⁸ And the Lord spake to Moses, and said,

⁴⁹ Do not thou number the lineage of Levi, neither set thou the sum of them with the sons of Israel;

⁵⁰ but thou shalt ordain them upon the tabernacle of witnessing, and upon all the vessels thereof, and upon what-ever thing pertaineth to the cere-monies, either sacrifices. They shall bear the tabernacle, and all the appur-tenances thereof, and they shall be in the service of it, and they shall set their tents by compass of the taber-nacle.

⁵¹ When men shall go forth, or be removed, the deacons shall take down the tabernacle; when the tents shall be set, they shall set it up. Whoever of strangers nigheth, he shall be slain.

⁵² Soothly the sons of Israel shall set tents, each man by his companies, and his fellowships, and his host;

⁵³ forsooth the deacons shall set their tents by compass of the tabernacle, lest indignation be made on the multitude of the sons of Israel; and they shall wake or watch in the keepings of the tabernacle of witnessing.

⁵⁴ Therefore the sons of Israel did by all things which the Lord commanded to Moses.

⁹ of Zebulun, Eliab, the son of Helon;

¹⁰ soothly of the sons of Joseph; of Ephraim, Elishama, the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur;

¹¹ of Benjamin, Abidan, the son of Gideoni;

¹² of Dan, Ahiezer, the son of Ammishaddai;

¹³ of Asher, Pagiel, the son of Ocran;

¹⁴ of Gad, Eliasaph, the son of Deuel;

¹⁵ of Naphtali, Ahira, the son of Enan.

¹⁶ These were the noblest princes of the multitude, by their lineages, and kindreds, and the heads of the host(s) of Israel, (These were the noblest leaders of the multitude, by their tribes, and kindreds, and the heads of the armies of Israel,)

¹⁷ the which princes Moses and Aaron took, with all the multitude of the common people. (which leaders Moses and Aaron took, along with all the multitude of the common people.)

⁴⁶ were all together six hundred thousand and three thousand men, and five hundred and fifty. (were altogether six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty men.)

⁴⁷ Soothly the deacons in the lineage of their families were not numbered with them. (But the Levites, in the tribe of their families, were not listed with them.)

⁴⁸ And the Lord spake to Moses, and said, (For the Lord spoke to Moses, and said,)

They shall bear the tabernacle, and all the purtenances thereof, and they shall be in the service of it, and they shall set their tents by compass of the tabernacle (or and they shall pitch their tents around the Tabernacle).

⁵¹ When men shall go forth, or be removed, the deacons shall take down the tabernacle; when the tents shall be set (up), they shall set it up (again). Whoever of strangers nigheth (to it), he shall be slain (or he shall be put to death).

⁵² Soothly the sons of Israel shall set tents, each man by his companies, and his fellowships, and his host; (And the other Israelites shall pitch their tents, each man in his company, and his fellowship, and his army;)

⁵³ forsooth the deacons shall set their tents by compass of the tabernacle, lest indignation be made on the multitude of the sons of Israel; and they shall (stand) watch in the keepings of the tabernacle of witnessing. (but the Levites shall pitch their tents around the Tabernacle, lest my indignation come upon all the multitude of the Israelites; and they shall keep charge of the Tabernacle of the Witnessing.)

⁵⁴ Therefore the sons of Israel did by all things which the Lord commanded to Moses. (And so the Israelites did all the things that the Lord commanded to Moses.)

¹⁷ whiche pryncis Moises and Aaron token, with al the multitude of the comyn puple.

¹⁸ And thei gaderiden in the firste dai of the secounde monethe, and telden hem bi kynredis, and housis, and meynees, and heedis, and names of alle by hem silf, fro the twentithe yeer and aboue,

⁴⁶ sixe hundrid thousynde and thre thousynde of men, fyue hundred and fifti.

⁴⁸ And the Lord spak to Moises, and seide, `Nyle thou noumbre the lynage of Leuy,

⁴⁹ nether sette thou the summe of hem with the sones of Israel;

⁵⁰ but thou schalt ordeyne hem on the tabernacle of witnessing, and on alle the vessels therof, and what euer thing perteyneth to cerymonyes ether sacrifices. Thei schulen bere the tabernacle, and alle purtenaunces therof, and thei schulen be in seruyce, and schulen sette tentis bi the cumpas of the tabernacle.

⁵¹ Whanne me schal go, the dekenes schulen do doun the tabernacle; whanne the tentis schulen be sette, thei schulen `reise the tabernacle. Who euer of straungeris neiyeth, he schal be slayn.

⁵² Sotheli the sones of Israel schulen sette tentis, ech man bi cumpenyes, and gaderyngis, and his oost;

⁵³ forsothe the dekenes schulen sette tentis bi the cumpas of the tabernacle, lest indignacioun be maad on the multitude of the sones of Israel; and thei schulen wake in the kepyngis of the `tabernacle of witnessyng.

⁵⁴ Therfor the sones of Israel diden bi alle thingis whiche the Lord comaundide to Moises.

¹⁹ as Jehovah hath commanded Moses; and he numbereth them in the wilderness of Sinai.

²⁰ And the sons of Reuben, Israel's first-born — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, by their polls, every male from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

²¹ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Reuben, are six and forty thousand and five hundred.

³⁴ Of the sons of Manasseh — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

³⁵ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Manasseh, are two and thirty thousand and two hundred.

³⁶ Of the sons of Benjamin — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

³⁷ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Benjamin, are five and thirty thousand and four hundred.

³⁸ Of the sons of Dan — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

³⁹ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Dan, are two and sixty thousand and seven hundred.

⁴⁰ Of the sons of Asher — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

⁴¹ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Asher, are one and forty thousand and five hundred.

⁴² Of the sons of Naphtali — their births, by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host —

⁴³ their numbered ones, for the tribe of Naphtali, are three and fifty thousand and four hundred.

⁴⁴ These are those numbered, whom Moses numbered — Aaron also, and the princes of Israel, twelve men — each for the house of his fathers, they have been.

⁴⁵ And they are, all those numbered of the sons of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from a son of twenty years and upward, every one going out to the host in Israel,

⁴⁶ yea, all those numbered are six hundred thousand, and three thousand, and five hundred and fifty.

⁴⁷ And the Levites, for the tribe of their fathers, have not numbered themselves in their midst,

⁴⁸ seeing Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

⁴⁹ 'Only, the tribe of Levi thou dost not number, and their sum thou dost not take up in the midst of the sons of Israel;

⁵⁰ and thou, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its vessels, and over all that it hath; they bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels, and they serve it; and round about the tabernacle they encamp.

⁵¹ 'And in the journeying of the tabernacle, the Levites take it down, and in the encamping of the tabernacle, the Levites raise it up; and the stranger who is coming near is put to death.'

⁵² And the sons of Israel have encamped, each by his camp, and each by his standard, by their hosts;

⁵³ and the Levites encamp round about the tabernacle of the testimony; and there is no wrath on the company of the sons of Israel, and the Levites have kept the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.

⁵⁴ And the sons of Israel do according to all that Jehovah hath commanded Moses; so they have done.
