Numbers 14:4-15 in English

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes:

⁷ and they spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

⁸ If Jehovah delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it unto us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

⁹ Only rebel not against Jehovah, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is removed from over them, and Jehovah is with us: fear them not.

¹⁰ But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And Jehovah said unto Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.

¹³ And Moses said unto Jehovah, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;

¹⁴ and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that thou Jehovah art in the midst of this people; for thou Jehovah art seen face to face, and thy cloud standeth over them, and thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a ruler, and return into Egypt.

⁵ And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ But Joshua the son of Naue, and Chaleb the son of Jephonne, of the number of them that spied out the land, rent their garments,

⁷ and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land which we surveyed is indeed extremely good.

⁸ If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

⁹ Only depart not from the Lord; and fear ye not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; for the season of prosperity is departed from them, but the Lord is among us: fear them not.

¹⁰ And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long does this people provoke me? and how long do they refuse to believe me for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

¹² I will smite them with death, and destroy them; and I will make of thee and of thy father's house a great nation, and much greater than this.

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord, So Egypt shall hear, for thou hast brought up this people from them by thy might.

¹⁴ Moreover all the dwellers upon this land have heard that thou art Lord in the midst of this people, who, O Lord, art seen by them face to face, and thy cloud rests upon them, and thou goest before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire.

¹⁵ And if thou shalt destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard thy name shall speak, saying,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:

⁷ And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

⁸ If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

⁹ Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.

¹⁰ But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

¹³ And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

¹⁵ Now if thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

⁴ Then some of them said to each other, “We should choose a leader who will take us back to Egypt!”

⁵ Then Aaron and Moses/I bowed down to pray in front of all the Israeli people who had gathered there.

⁶ Joshua and Caleb, two of the men who had explored the land, tore their clothes because they were very dismayed.

⁷ They said to the Israeli people, “The land that we explored is very good.

⁸ If Yahweh is pleased with us, he will lead us into that very fertile IDM land, and he will give it to us.

⁹ So do not rebel against Yahweh! And do not be afraid of the people in that land! We will ◄gobble them up/completely destroy them► MET! They do not have anyone who will protect them, but Yahweh will be with us and help us. So do not be afraid of them!”

¹⁰ Then all the Israeli people talked about killing Caleb and Joshua by throwing stones at them. But suddenly Yahweh's glory appeared to them at the Sacred Tent.

¹¹ Then Yahweh said to Moses/me, “How long will these people reject me RHQ? I am tired of them not believing in what I can do, in spite of all the miracles I have performed among them RHQ!

¹² So I will cause a ◄plague/widespread sickness► to strike them and get rid of them. But I will cause your descendants to become a great nation. They will be a nation that is much greater and stronger than these people are.”

¹³ But Moses/I replied to Yahweh, “ Please do not do that, because the people of Egypt will hear about it! You brought these Israeli people from Egypt by your great power,

¹⁴ and the people of Egypt will tell that to the descendants of Canaan who live in this land. Yahweh, they have already heard about you. They know that you have ◄been with/helped► these people and that they have seen you face-to-face. They have heard that your cloud is like a huge pillar that stays over them, and by using that cloud you lead them during the day, and that the cloud becomes like a fire at night to give them light.

¹⁵ If you kill these people all at one time, the people-groups who have heard about your power will say,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a ruler, and return into Egypt.

⁵ And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.

¹⁰ But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Yahweh’s glory appeared in the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel.

¹¹ Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

¹² I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

¹³ Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.

¹⁴ They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

¹¹ The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? How long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked amongst them?

¹² I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”

¹³ Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from amongst them.

¹⁴ They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are amongst this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,

⁴ And they said to one another, Let us make a captain over us, and go back to Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron went down on their faces before the meeting of the people.

⁶ And Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, two of those who had been to see the land, giving signs of grief,

⁷ Said to all the children of Israel, This land which we went through to see is a very good land.

⁸ And if the Lord has delight in us, he will take us into this land and give it to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Only, do not go against the Lord or go in fear of the people of the land, for they will be our food; their strength has been taken from them and the Lord is with us: have no fear of them.

¹⁰ But all the people said they were to be stoned. Then the glory of the Lord was seen in the Tent of meeting, before the eyes of all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long will this people have no respect for me? how long will they be without faith, in the face of all the signs I have done among them?

¹² I will send disease on them for their destruction, and take away their heritage, and I will make of you a nation greater and stronger than they.

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord, Then it will come to the ears of the Egyptians; for by your power you took this people out from among them;

¹⁴ And they will give the news to the people of this land: they have had word that you, Lord, are present with this people, letting yourself be seen face to face, and that your cloud is resting over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if you put to death all this people as one man, then the nations who have had word of your glory will say,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return to Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces before the whole congregation of the assembly of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of them that searched out the land, rent their garments.

⁷ And they spoke to the whole assembly of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it out, is a very, very good land.

⁸ If Jehovah delight in us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us, a land that flows with milk and honey;

⁹ only rebel not against Jehovah; and fear not the people of the land; for they shall be our food. Their defence is departed from them, and Jehovah is with us: fear them not.

¹⁰ And the whole assembly said that they should be stoned with stones. And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the tent of meeting to all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And Jehovah said to Moses, How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe me, for all the signs which I have done among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.

¹³ And Moses said to Jehovah, Then the Egyptians will hear it; for in thy might thou broughtest up this people from the midst of them;

¹⁴ and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that thou, Jehovah, art in the midst of this people, that thou, Jehovah, lettest thyself be seen eye to eye, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;

¹⁵ if thou now slayest this people as one man, then the nations that have heard thy fame will speak, saying,

⁴ And they said one to another: Let us appoint a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

⁵ And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell down flat upon the ground before the multitude of the children of Israel.

⁶ But Josue the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephone, who themselves also had viewed the land, rent their garments,

⁷ And said to all the multitude of the children of Israel: The land which we have gone round is very good:

⁸ If the Lord be favourable, he will bring us into it, and give us a land flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Be not rebellious against the Lord: and fear ye not the people of this land, for we are able to eat them up as bread. All aid is gone from them: the Lord is with us, fear ye not.

¹⁰ And when all the multitude cried out, and would have stoned them, the glory of the Lord appeared over the tabernacle of the covenant to all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses: How long will this people detract me? how long will they not believe me for all the signs that I have wrought before them?

¹² I will strike them therefore with pestilence, and will consume them: but thee I will make a ruler over a great nation, and a mightier than this is.

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord: That the Egyptians, from the midst of whom thou hast brought forth this people,

¹⁴ And the inhabitants of this land, (who have heard that thou, O Lord, art among this people, and art seen face to face, and thy cloud protecteth them, and thou goest before them in a pillar of a cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night,)

¹⁵ May hear that thou hast killed so great a multitude as it were one man and may say:

⁴ They said to one another, “Let's choose a new leader us and go back to Egypt.”

⁵ Moses and Aaron fellfacedown on the ground in front of all the assembled Israelites.

⁶ Joshua, son of Nun, and Caleb, son of Jephunneh, were there. They had been part of the group who had gone to spy out the land. They ripped their clothes,

⁷ and told the Israelites, “The country we traveled through and explored has very good land.

⁸ If the Lord is happy with us, he will take us there and give it to us, a land that's so productive it's like flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Don't rebel and fight against the Lord. You don't need to be afraid of the people living there in the country—we can take them easily! They're defenseless and the Lord is with us. Don't be frightened of them!”

¹⁰ In reply all the people shouted out, “Stone them!” But the glory of the Lord suddenly appeared in the Tent of Meeting, right in the middle of the Israelites.

¹¹ The Lord told Moses, “How long are these people going to reject me? How long are these people going to refuse to trust in me despite all the miracles I have done right in front of them?

¹² I'm going to make them sick with a disease and kill them. Then I will make you into a nation that's greater and strong than them.”

¹³ But Moses told the Lord, “The Egyptians will find out about it! It was by your power that you led the Israelites out from among them.

¹⁴ They will tell the people living in this country all about it. They've already heard that you, Lord, are with us Israelites, that you, Lord, are seen face to face, that your cloud stands guard over them, and that you lead them by a pillar of cloud during day and a pillar of fire at night.

¹⁵ If you kill all these people in one go, the nations who have heard about you will say,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let vs make a Captaine and returne into Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assemblie of the Congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh two of them that searched the lande, rent their clothes,

⁷ And spake vnto all the assemblie of the childre of Israel, saying, The land which we walked through to search it, is a very good lande.

⁸ If the Lord loue vs, he will bring vs into this land, and giue it vs, which is a land that floweth with milke and honie.

⁹ But rebell not ye against the Lord, neither feare ye the people of the land: for they are but bread for vs: their shielde is departed from the, and the Lord is with vs, feare them not.

¹⁰ And all the multitude saide, Stone them with stones: but the glory of the Lord appeared in the Tabernacle of the Congregation, before all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said vnto Moses, How long will this people prouoke me, and howe long will it be, yer they beleeue me, for al the signes which I haue shewed among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence and destroy them, and will make thee a greater nation and mightier then they.

¹³ But Moses saide vnto the Lord, When the Egyptians shall heare it, (for thou broughtest this people by thy power from among them)

¹⁴ Then they shall say to the inhabitants of this land, (for they haue heard that thou, Lord, art among this people, and that thou, Lord, art seene face to face, and that thy cloude standeth ouer them, and that thou goest before them by day time in a pillar of a cloude, and in a pillar of fire by night)

¹⁵ That thou wilt kill this people as one man: so the heathen which haue heard the fame of thee, shall thus say,

⁴ And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.

⁷ And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.

⁸ If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us — a land which floweth with milk and honey.

⁹ Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'

¹⁰ But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'

¹³ And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear — for Thou broughtest up this people in Thy might from among them —

¹⁴ they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud standeth over them, and Thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;

¹⁵ now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying:

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:

⁷ and they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.

⁸ If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.

⁹ Only rebel not ye against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.

¹⁰ But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.

¹³ And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)

⁶ And Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Yephunneh, of those that had spied out the land, rent their garments.

⁷ And they said unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, as followeth, The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, this land is exceedingly good.

⁸ If the Lord have delight in us, then will he bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land which is flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Only against the Lord do ye not rebel; and then ye need not fear the people of the land; for they are our bread: their shadow is departed from them, while the Lord is with us; fear them not.

¹⁰ But all the congregation said to stone them with stones: when the glory of the Lord appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation unto all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said unto Moses, How long yet shall this people provoke me? and how long yet will they not believe in me, with all the signs which I have shown in the midst of them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence, and root them out, and I will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.

¹³ And Moses said unto the Lord, But when the Egyptian hear, from the midst of whom thou hast brought up in thy might this people;—

¹⁴ And when they tell to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that thou, Lord, art in the midst of this people, that face to face thou, Lord, art seen, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that in a pillar of cloud thou goest before them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;—

¹⁵ That thou hast killed this people as one man: then will the nations that have heard thy fame, say in this manner,

⁴ And they said one to another, Let us make a ruler, and return into Egypt.

⁵ And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁶ But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of the number of them that spied out the land, rent their garments,

⁷ and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land which we surveyed is indeed extremely good.

⁸ If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.

⁹ Only depart not from the Lord; and fear ye not the people of the land, for they are meat for us; for the season of prosperity is departed from them, but the Lord is among us: fear them not.

¹⁰ And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long does this people provoke me? and how long do they refuse to believe me for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

¹² I will smite them with death, and destroy them; and I will make of thee and of thy father’s house a great nation, and much greater than this.

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord, So Egypt shall hear, for thou hast brought up this people from them by thy might.

¹⁴ Moreover all the dwellers upon this land have heard that thou art Lord in the midst of this people, who, O Lord, art seen by them face to face, and thy cloud rests upon them, and thou goest before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire.

¹⁵ And if thou shalt destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard thy name shall speak, saying,

⁴ And they said, a man to his brother, Let us appoint a chieftain, and go back into Mizraim.

⁵ And Mosheh and Aharon fell upon their faces before all the assembly of the sons of Israel.

⁶ And Jehoshua bar Nun, and Kaleb bar Jephuneh, who were of the explorers of the land, rent their clothes.

⁷ And they spake to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying: The land, which we passed through to explore it, is a good land, most exceedingly.

⁸ If the Lord hath pleasure in us, even He will bring us into this land, and give us the land which produceth milk and honey.

⁹ Only be not rebellious against the Word of the Lord, nor be afraid of the people of the land, for they are delivered into our hand; their strength is departed from them, and the Word of the Lord is our helper: fear them not.

¹⁰ But all the congregation said that they would stone them with stones. And the Glory of the Lord was revealed at the tabernacle of ordinance, unto all the children of Israel.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Mosheh, How long will this people provoke Me, and how long will they disbelieve in My Word, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?

¹² I will smite them with the pestilence and consume them; and will make of thee a people greater and stronger than they.

¹³ But Mosheh said before the Lord, And the Mizraee will hear of it; for Thou didst bring up by Thy power this people from among them,

¹⁴ And they will tell unto the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that Thou, O Lord, dost dwell in Thy Shekinah among this people, whose eyes behold the glorious Shekinah of the Lord, and that Thy Cloud overshadoweth them, and that in the pillar of the Cloud Thou conductest them in the day, and in the pillar of Fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, the nations who have heard the fame of Thy power will speak, saying:

⁴ They said to one another, “Let us make a captain, and let us teshuvah ·completely return· into Egypt Abode of slavery.”

⁵ Then Moses Drawn out and Aaron Light-bringer fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel God prevails.

¹³ Moses Drawn out said to Adonai , “Then the Egyptians people from Abode of slavery will sh'ma ·hear obey· it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.

¹⁵ Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have sh'ma ·heard obeyed· the fame of you will speak, saying,

⁴ They said to each another, “Let us choose another leader, and let us return to Egypt.”

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron lay facedown before all the assembly of the community of the people of Israel.

⁶ Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were some of those sent to examine the land, tore their clothes.

⁷ They spoke to all the community of the people of Israel. They said, “The land that we passed through and examined is a very good land.

⁸ If Yahweh is pleased with us, then he will take us into this land and give it to us. The land flows with milk and honey.

⁹ But do not rebel against Yahweh, and do not fear the people in the land, for they are bread to us. Their protection will be removed from them, because Yahweh is with us. Do not fear them.”

¹⁰ Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of Yahweh appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.

¹¹ Yahweh said to Moses, “How long must this people despise me? How long must they fail to trust me, despite all the signs of my power that I have done among them?

¹² I will attack them with plague, disinherit them, and make from your own clan a nation that will be greater and mightier than they are.”

¹³ Moses said to Yahweh, “If you do this, then the Egyptians will hear about it, because you rescued this people from them by your power.

¹⁴ They will tell it to this land's inhabitants. They have heard that you, Yahweh, are present with this people, because you are seen face to face. Your cloud stands over our people. You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations that have heard of your fame will speak and say,

⁴ They said to one another, “Let’s choose a leader, and let’s return into Egypt.”

⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

⁵ And when this was heard, Moses and Aaron fell down low to the earth, before all the multitude of the sons of Israel.

⁶ And soothly Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, which also compassed the land, rent their clothes,

⁷ and they spake thus to all the multitude of the sons of Israel, The land which we compassed is full good;

⁸ if the Lord is merciful to us, he shall lead us into it, and he shall give us the land flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Do not ye rebel against the Lord, neither dread ye the people of this land, for we be able to devour them so as bread; all their help hath passed away from them, the Lord is with us, do not ye dread.

¹⁰ And when all the multitude cried, and would have oppressed them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared upon the roof of the bond of peace, while all the sons of Israel saw.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long shall this people backbite me, or mis-deem me? How long shall they not believe to me, in all the signs which I have done before them?

¹² Therefore I shall smite them with pestilence, and I shall waste them; soothly I shall make thee prince upon a greater folk, and stronger than is this.

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord, The Egyptians hear not, from whose middle thou leddest out this people,

¹⁴ and the dwellers of this land, which heard that thou, Lord, art in this people, and art seen face to face, and that thy cloud defendeth them, and that thou goest before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night,

¹⁵ that thou hast slain so great a multitude as one man, and say,

⁴ And they said one to another, Ordain we a duke, or a leader, to us, and turn we again into Egypt. (And they said to one another, Let us choose a new leader, and let us return to Egypt.)

⁵ And when this was heard, Moses and Aaron fell down low to the earth (or Moses and Aaron fell down on the ground), before all the multitude of the sons of Israel.

⁶ And soothly Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, which also compassed the land, rent their clothes, (And truly Joshua, the son of Nun, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, two of the spies who had gone throughout the land, tore their clothes,)

⁷ and they spake thus to all the multitude of the sons of Israel, (and said), The land which we compassed is full good; (and they spoke thus to all the multitude of the Israelites, and said, The land which we went about is very good;)

⁸ if the Lord is merciful to us, he shall lead us into it, and he shall give us the land flowing with milk and honey.

⁹ Do not ye rebel against the Lord, neither dread ye the people of this land, for we be able to devour them so as bread; all their help hath passed away from them, the Lord is with us, do not ye dread. (Do not ye rebel against the Lord, nor fear ye the people of this land, for we be able to eat them up like a piece of bread; all their help hath passed away from them, yea, the Lord is with us, do not ye fear.)

¹⁰ And when all the multitude cried (out), and would have oppressed them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared upon the roof of the bond of peace, while all the sons of Israel saw. (But when all the multitude shouted, and would have killed them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared over the Tabernacle of the Covenant, before all the Israelites.)

¹¹ And the Lord said to Moses, How long shall this people backbite me, or mis-deem me? How long shall they not believe to me, in (spite of) all the signs which I have done before them? (And the Lord said to Moses, How long shall these people backbite me, or mis-judge me? How long shall they not believe me, or not trust in me, in spite of all the miracles which I have done before them?)

¹² Therefore I shall smite them with pestilence, and I shall waste them; soothly I shall make thee prince upon a greater folk, and stronger than is this. (And so I shall strike them with a pestilence, or a plague, and I shall destroy them; and then I shall make thee the leader of a greater, and of a stronger, nation than these people be.)

¹³ And Moses said to the Lord, The Egyptians hear not, from whose middle thou leddest out this people, (And Moses said to the Lord, But then the Egyptians, from whose midst thou leddest out these people, shall hear of it,)

¹⁴ and (they shall tell it to) the dwellers of this land, which heard that thou, Lord, art in this people, (or who have heard that thou, Lord, art with these people), and art seen face to face, and that thy cloud defendeth them, and that thou goest before them in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night,

¹⁵ that thou hast slain so great a multitude as (if they be just) one man, and (then they shall) say,

⁴ And thei seiden oon to another, Ordeyne we a duyk to vs, and turne we ayen in to Egipt.

⁵ And whanne this was herd, Moises and Aaron felden lowe to erthe, bifor al the multitude of the sones of Israel.

⁶ And sotheli Josue, the sone of Nun, and Caleph, the sone of Jephone, whiche also cumpassiden the lond, to renten her clothis,

⁷ and spaken to al the multitude of the sones of Israel, The lond which we cumpassiden is ful good;

⁸ if the Lord is merciful to vs, he schal lede vs in to it, and schal yyue `to vs the lond flowynge with mylk and hony.

⁹ Nyle ye be rebel ayens the Lord, nether drede ye the puple of this lond, for we moun deuoure hem so as breed; al her help passide awei fro hem, the Lord is with vs, nyle ye drede.

¹⁰ And whanne al the multitude criede, and wolde oppresse hem with stonys, the glorie of the Lord apperide on the roof of the boond of pees, while alle the sones of Israel sien.

¹¹ And the Lord seide to Moises, Hou long schal this puple bacbite me? Hou longe schulen thei not bileue to me in alle `signes, whiche Y haue do bifor hem?

¹² Therfor Y schal smyte hem with pestilence, and Y schal waste hem; forsothe Y schal make thee prince on a greet folk, and strongere than is this.

¹³ And Moises seide to the Lord, Egipcians `here not, fro whos myddil thou leddist out this puple,

¹⁴ and the dwelleris of this loond, whiche herden that thou, Lord, art in this puple, and art seyn face to face, and that thi cloude defendith hem, and that thou goist bifore hem in a pilere of cloude bi dai,

¹⁵ and in a piler of fier bi nyyt, that thou hast slayn so greet a multitude as o man,

⁴ And they say one unto another, 'Let us appoint a head, and turn back to Egypt.'

⁵ And Moses falleth — Aaron also — on their faces, before all the assembly of the company of the sons of Israel.

⁶ And Joshua son of Nun, and Caleb son of Jephunneh, of those spying the land, have rent their garments,

⁷ and they speak unto all the company of the sons of Israel, saying, 'The land into which we have passed over to spy it, is a very very good land;

⁸ if Jehovah hath delighted in us, then He hath brought us in unto this land, and hath given it to us, a land which is flowing with milk and honey;

⁹ only, against Jehovah rebel not ye: and ye, fear not ye the people of the land, for our bread they are; their defence hath turned aside from off them, and Jehovah is with us; fear them not.'

¹⁰ And all the company say to stone them with stones, and the honour of Jehovah hath appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the sons of Israel.

¹¹ And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Until when doth this people despise Me? and until when do they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have done in its midst?

¹² I smite it with pestilence, and dispossess it, and make thee become a nation greater and mightier than it.'

¹³ And Moses saith unto Jehovah, 'Then have the Egyptians heard! for Thou hast brought up with Thy power this people out of their midst,

¹⁴ and they have said it unto the inhabitant of this land, they have heard that Thou, Jehovah, art in the midst of this people, that eye to eye Thou art seen — O Jehovah, and Thy cloud is standing over them, — and in a pillar of cloud Thou art going before them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.

¹⁵ 'And Thou hast put to death this people as one man, and the nations who have heard Thy fame have spoken, saying,
