³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.

³⁹ But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet:

⁴⁰ for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.

⁴² The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

³⁸ Then some of the Pharisees and men who taught the Jewish laws responded to what Jesus was teaching by saying to him, “Teacher, we want to see you perform a miracle that would prove to us that God sent you.”

³⁹ Then Jesus said to them, “ You people have already seen me perform miracles, but you are evil, and you do not faithfully worship God MET! You want me to perform a miracle that would prove to you that God sent me, but God will enable you to see only one miracle. It will be like what happened to Jonah the prophet MET.

⁴⁰ Jonah was in the stomach of a huge fish for three days and nights before God caused him to live again. Similarly, for three days and nights I, the one who came from heaven, will be in a place where dead people are, and then God will cause me to live again.

⁴¹ When God judges all people, the people who lived in Nineveh will stand in front of him with you people who have seen me perform miracles. The people of Nineveh turned from their sinful ways as a result of hearing what Jonah preached. Jonah was important, but I, who am more important than Jonah, have come and preached to you, but you have not turned from your sinful ways. So when God judges all people, he will condemn you.

⁴² The queen from Sheba, South of Israel, who lived long ago, came from a distant region in order to listen to King Solomon teach many wise things. But now I, a man who is much greater and wiser than Solomon, am here, but you have not listened to what I have told you. So at the time when God judges all people, the queen from Sheba will stand in front of him, along with you people, and will condemn you.”

⁴³ “ Sometimes when an evil spirit leaves a person, it wanders around in desolate areas, seeking someone in whom it can rest. If it does not find anyone,

⁴⁴ it says to itself, ‘I will return to the person MET in whom I used to live.’ So it goes back and finds that the Spirit of God is not in control of that person's life. The person's life is like a house that has been swept clean and everything put in order MET, but it is empty.

⁴³ But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of a man, goes through dry places looking for rest, and getting it not.

⁴⁴ Then he says, I will go back into my house from which I came out; and when he comes, he sees that there is no one in it, but that it has been made fair and clean.

³⁸ Then answered him some of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, Teacher, we desire to see a sign from thee.

³⁹ But he, answering, said to them, A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it save the sign of Jonas the prophet.

⁴⁰ For even as Jonas was in the belly of the great fish three days and three nights, thus shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

⁴¹ Ninevites shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, more than Jonas is here.

³⁹ But in answer He said to them: “A malignant and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

⁴⁰ For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the stomach of the sea monster, so will the Son of the Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

⁴¹ Ninevite men will arise with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and really, a greater than Jonah is here.

⁴² The queen of the South will be raised with this generation at the judgment and she will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and really, a greater than Solomon is here.

⁴³ “Now when an unclean spirit demon goes out from a man, it goes through arid places looking for rest, but finds none.

⁴⁴ Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from where I came.’ And coming it finds it unoccupied, swept and put in order.

³⁸ Then some of the religious teachers and Pharisees came to him and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign.”

³⁹ “Evil people who don't trust in God are the ones who look for a miraculous sign. The only sign they will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah,” Jesus told them.

⁴⁰ “In the same way Jonah was in the belly of a huge fish for three days and three nights, the Son of man will lie in the earth for three days and three nights.

⁴¹ The people of Nineveh will rise in the judgment together with this generation and they will condemn it because they repented in response to Jonah's message—and as you see, there's someone greater than Jonah here!

⁴² The Queen of the South will be raised in the judgment together with this generation and will condemn it because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon—and as you see, there's someone greater than Solomon here!

⁴³ When an evil spirit leaves someone, it wanders through deserted places looking for rest, and finds nowhere to stay.

⁴⁴ So it says, ‘I'll go back to the place I left,’ and when it returns it finds the place empty, all clean and tidy.

³⁸ Then answered certaine of ye Scribes and of the Pharises, saying, Master, we would see a signe of thee.

³⁹ But he answered and said to them, An euill and adulterous generation seeketh a signe, but no signe shall be giuen vnto it, saue that signe of the Prophet Ionas.

⁴⁰ For as Ionas was three daies and three nights in the whales belly: so shall the Sonne of man be three daies and three nights in ye heart of the earth.

⁴¹ The men of Nineue shall rise in iudgement with this generation, and condemne it: for they repented at the preaching of Ionas: and behold, a greater then Ionas is here.

³⁹ But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah Dove the prophet.

⁴⁰ For as Jonah Dove was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh Offspring’s Habitation will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they make teshuvah ·complete repentance· at the preaching of Jonah Dove; and behold, someone greater than Jonah Dove is here.

⁴² The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon Peaceable, Recompense; and behold, someone greater than Solomon Peaceable, Recompense is here.”

⁴³ “When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and does not find it.

⁴⁴ Then he says, ‘I will teshuvah ·completely return· into my house from which I came out,’ and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.

³⁸ One day some Jewish law teachers, and other law men called Pharisees, went to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want to see you do something powerful. This will show us that God sent you.”

³⁹ Jesus said, “You mob that are alive today are really bad. You turned away from God. But now you want me to show you something powerful, right? No. I will not do that. The only powerful thing you will see is the same thing that God did to his man called Jonah, a long time ago.

⁴⁰ Do you remember that story? Jonah stayed inside a big fish for 3 days. And just like that, I will stay in the ground for 3 days. I am God’s special man from heaven.

⁴¹ And, remember, Jonah went to the people that lived in the city called Nineveh, and he told them God’s message. Those people listened to him, and they stopped doing bad things and turned to God. Well, later, on the day when God will judge everyone, that Nineveh mob will get up and tell you mob here that you are wrong. You see, that Nineveh mob took notice of Jonah. And I am greater than Jonah, but you mob don’t take any notice of me. You don’t turn to God, and you don’t stop doing bad things.

⁴² And do you remember the story about the woman that was the big boss of the country called Sheba? She heard about Solomon. He was the big boss of our country. She heard that he was a very wise man, so she came here to listen to the good things he said. Well, later, on the day when God will judge everyone, that woman will get up and tell you mob here that you are stupid. You see, she came a long way from her country just to listen to Solomon. And I am more wise than Solomon, but you mob don’t want to listen to me.”

⁴³ And Jesus said, “When a bad spirit goes out of a person, it goes around in dry country looking for a new place to live. But it doesn’t find a good place.

⁴⁴ So it says to itself, ‘I will go back to the place that I lived in before.’ Then it goes back to that person, and it finds the place is good, empty and clean.

³⁸ Then answered certeyne of the scribes and of the Pharises sayinge: Master we wolde fayne se a sygne of the.

³⁹ He answered and sayde to the: The evyll and advoutrous generacion seketh a signe but ther shall no signe be geve to the saue the signe of the Prophete Ionas.

⁴⁰ For as Ionas was thre dayes and thre nyghtes in the whales belly: soo shall the sonne of man be thre dayes and thre nyghtes in the hert of the erth.

⁴¹ The men of Ninivie shall rise at the daye of iugdement with this nacion and condemne them: for they amended at the preachinge of Ionas. And beholde a greater then Ionas is here.

⁴² The quene of the south shall ryse at the daye of iudgement with this generacion and shall condemne the: for she came from the vtmost parties of the worlde to heare the wysdome of Salomon. And beholde a greater then Salomon is here.
