⁷ And he calleth unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

⁸ and he charged them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse;

⁹ but to go shod with sandals: and, said he, put not on two coats.

¹⁰ And he said unto them, Wheresoever ye enter into a house, there abide till ye depart thence.

¹¹ And whatsoever place shall not receive you, and they hear you not, as ye go forth thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony unto them.

¹² And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

¹³ And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard thereof; for his name had become known: and he said, John the Baptizer is risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him.

¹⁵ But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even as one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But Herod, when he heard thereof, said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ And Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him; and she could not;

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was spread abroad:) and he said, That John the Baptist was risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

¹⁵ Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;

²² And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

⁷ One day he summoned the twelve disciples, and then he told them that he was going to send them out two-by-two to teach people in various towns. He gave them power to expel evil spirits from people.

⁸ He also instructed them to wear sandals and to take along a walking stick when they were traveling. He told them not to take food, nor a bag in which travelers carry supplies, nor any money for their journey. He also did not allow them to take extra clothing. He wanted the people who heard their message to give them what they needed.

¹⁰ He also instructed them, “After you enter a town, if someone invites you to stay in his house, go into his house. Eat and sleep in that same home until you leave that town.

¹¹ Wherever the people do not welcome you and wherever the people do not listen to you, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that place. By doing that, you will warn them that God will punish them for rejecting your message.”

¹² So after the disciples went out to various towns, they were preaching that people should stop their sinful behavior.

¹³ They were also expelling many evil spirits from people, and they were anointing many sick people with olive oil and healing them.

¹⁴ King Herod Antipas heard about what Jesus was doing, because many people were talking about it. Some people were saying about Jesus, “ He must be John the Baptizer! He has come back to life! That is why he has God's power to perform these miracles!”

¹⁵ Others were saying about Jesus, “He is the former prophet Elijah, whom God promised to send back again.” Others were saying about Jesus, “ No, he is a different prophet, like one of the other prophets who lived long ago.”

¹⁶ Having heard what the people were saying, King Herod Antipas himself repeatedly said, “The man performing those miracles must be John! I commanded my soldiers to cut off his head, but he has come back to life again to get revenge for my killing him!”

¹⁷ The reason King Herod concluded that John wanted revenge is as follows: Some time before this, Herod married Herodias, while she was still the wife of his younger brother, Philip.

¹⁸ John kept telling Herod, “ God's law does not permit you to marry the wife of your brother while he is still alive.” Then, because Herodias urged him to put John in prison, Herod himself sent soldiers to John. They seized John and put him in prison.

¹⁹ But because Herodias wanted to get further revenge on John, she wanted someone to execute him. But she could not do that because while John was in prison, Herod kept John safe from her.

²⁰ Herod did this because he respected/feared John, because he knew that he was a righteous and holy man. The king did not know what he should do, but he liked to listen to him.

²¹ But Herodias was able to have someone execute John when they honored/celebrated the day when Herod was born. On that day, he invited the most important government officials, the most important army leaders, and the most important men in Galilee district in order that they might eat and celebrate with him.

²² While they were eating, Herodias' daughter came into the room and danced, and that pleased King Herod and his guests. So the king said to her, “Ask me for whatever you desire and I will give it to you!”

²³ He said to her, “Whatever you ask, I will give it to you! I will give you up to half of what I own and rule, if you ask for it. May God punish me if I do not do what I have promised!”

²⁴ The girl immediately left the room and went to her mother. She told her what the king had said, and asked her, “What shall I ask for?” Her mother replied, “ Ask the king to give you the head of John the Baptizer!”

²⁵ The girl quickly entered the room again. She went to the king and she requested, “I want you to command someone to cut off the head of John the Baptizer and give it to me at once on a platter, so that my mother can know he is dead!”

⁹ They were to go with common shoes on their feet, and not to take two coats.

¹⁰ And he said to them, Wherever you go into a house, make that your resting-place till you go away.

¹¹ And whatever place will not take you in and will not give ear to you, when you go away, put off the dust from your feet as a witness against them.

¹² And they went out, preaching the need for a change of heart in men.

¹³ And they sent out a number of evil spirits, and put oil on a great number who were ill, and made them well.

¹⁴ And king Herod had news of him, because his name was on the lips of all; and he said, John the Baptist has come back from the dead, and for this reason these powers are working in him.

¹⁵ But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even like one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But Herod, when he had news of it, said, John, whom I put to death, has come back from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent men out to take John and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had taken for himself.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is wrong for you to have your brother's wife.

¹⁹ And Herodias was bitter against him, desiring to put him to death; but she was not able;

²⁰ For Herod was in fear of John, being conscious that he was an upright and holy man, and kept him safe. And hearing him, he was much troubled; and he gave ear to him gladly.

²¹ And the chance came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and did a dance, Herod and those who were at table with him were pleased with her; and the king said to the girl, Make a request for anything and I will give it you.

²³ And he took an oath, saying to her, Whatever is your desire I will give it to you, even half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went out and said to her mother, What is my request to be? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And she came in quickly to the king, and said, My desire is that you give me straight away on a plate the head of John the Baptist.

¹⁴ And Herod the king heard of him (for his name had become public), and said, John the baptist is risen from among the dead, and on this account works of power are wrought by him.

¹⁶ But Herod when he heard it said, John whom I beheaded, he it is; he is risen from among the dead.

¹⁷ For the same Herod had sent and seized John, and had bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have the wife of thy brother.

¹⁹ But Herodias kept it in her mind against him, and wished to kill him, and could not:

²⁰ for Herod feared John knowing that he was a just and holy man, and kept him safe; and having heard him, did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ And a holiday being come, when Herod, on his birthday, made a supper to his grandees, and to the chiliarchs, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² and the daughter of the same Herodias having come in, and danced, pleased Herod and those that were with him at table; and the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt and I will give it thee.

²³ And he swore to her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask me I will give thee, to half of my kingdom.

¹⁶ Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ Now Herodias laid snares for him: and was desirous to put him to death, and could not.

²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and kept him, and when he heard him, did many things: and he heard him willingly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, Herod made a supper for his birthday, for the princes, and tribunes, and chief men of Galilee.

²² And when the daughter of the same Herodias had come in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that were at table with him, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ Who when she was gone out, said to her mother, What shall I ask? But she said: The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And when she was come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a dish, the head of John the Baptist.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John would say to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias held a grudge against him and was desiring to kill him, but she was not able;

²⁰ for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he was protecting him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and he would hear him gladly.

²¹ And when an opportune day arrived, when Herod for his birthday festivities was putting on a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee,

²² and when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and his dinner guests, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you may want, and I will give it to you.”

²³ He also swore to her, “Whatever you may ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”

²⁵ Immediately she came in with haste to the king and she requested, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

⁷ Then He summoned the twelve and began to send them out, two by two, giving them authority over the unclean spirits as He did so.

⁸ And He commanded them to take nothing for the road, except just a staff—no knapsack, no bread, no coin in the belt—

⁹ but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.

¹⁰ And He said to them: “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from that place.

¹¹ And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah on Judgment Day than for that city.”

¹² So they went out and started preaching that people should repent,

¹³ and they were casting out many demons, and anointing with oil and healing many who were sick.

¹⁴ Now King Herod heard of Him, because His name had become well known, and he said, “John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that is why the powers are at work in him.”

¹⁵ Others said, “He is Elijah.” Still others said, “He is a prophet like one of the prophets.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard, he said: “This is John, whom I beheaded; he has been raised from the dead!”

¹⁷ You see, Herod himself had ordered John arrested, and bound him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her

¹⁸ —John had kept saying to Herod, “It isn't lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him; but she couldn't,

²⁰ because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a just and holy man. And consulting him he would do many things; indeed, he would hear him with pleasure.

²¹ Then an opportune day came when on his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his courtiers, the military commanders, and the chief men of Galilee.

²² When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those reclining with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

²⁴ So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”

²⁵ Hurrying in directly to the king she requested, saying, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter!”

⁷ He called together the twelve disciples, and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority over evil spirits.

⁸ He told them not to take anything with them except a walking stick—no bread, no bag, and no money in their belts.

⁹ They could wear sandals, but they were not to take an extra shirt.

¹⁰ “When you're invited into a home, stay there until you leave,” he told them.

¹¹ “If you're not welcomed and not listened to, then shake the dust from your feet as you leave as a sign you have given up on them.”

¹² So they went around telling people to repent.

¹³ They drove out many demons, and healed many who were sick by anointing them with oil.

¹⁴ King Herod got to hear about Jesus since he had become well-known. Some said, “This is John the Baptist risen from the dead. That's why he has such miraculous powers.”

¹⁵ Others said, “It's Elijah.” Still others said, “He's a prophet, like one of the prophets of the past.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard about it, he said, “It's John, the one I beheaded! He's come back from the dead!”

¹⁷ For Herod had given orders to arrest and imprison John because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom Herod had married.

¹⁸ John had been saying to Herod, “It's against the law to marry your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ So Herodias had a grudge against John and wanted him killed. But she wasn't able to arrange it

²⁰ because Herod knew John was a holy man who did what was right. Herod protected John and though what John said was very disturbing to him, he was still happy to hear what he had to say.

²¹ Herodias had her opportunity on Herod's birthday. He gave a banquet for the nobles, military officers, and important leaders of Galilee.

²² Herodias' daughter came in and danced for them. Herod and those eating with him were delighted at her performance, so he told the girl,

²³ “Ask me for whatever you like, and I'll give it to you.” He confirmed his promise with an oath, “I'll give you up to half my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she replied.

²⁵ The girl hurried back in and said to the king, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a plate.”

⁷ And he called vnto him the twelue, and began to send them forth two and two, and gaue them power ouer vncleane spirits,

⁸ And commanded them that they should take nothing for their iourney, saue a staffe onely: neither scrip, neither bread, neither money in their girdles:

¹⁴ Then King Herod heard of him (for his name was made manifest) and sayd, Iohn Baptist is risen againe from the dead, and therefore great workes are wrought by him.

¹⁵ Other sayd, It is Elias, and some sayd, It is a Prophet, or as one of those Prophets.

¹⁶ So when Herod heard it, he said, It is Iohn whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod him selfe had sent forth, and had taken Iohn, and bound him in prison for Herodias sake, which was his brother Philippes wife, because he had maried her.

¹⁸ For Iohn sayd vnto Herod, It is not lawfull for thee to haue thy brothers wife.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias layd waite against him, and would haue killed him, but she could not:

²⁵ Then she came in straightway with haste vnto the King, and asked, saying, I would that thou shouldest giue me euen now in a charger the head of Iohn Baptist.

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

^7a After that he called his men,

^7c he told them, I will send you to people, you will tell them about God. I told you this word. From now on you send evil spirits from people. You go, do not take money or food.

⁹ Put on shoes, take only one set of clothes. Leave other clothes behind.

¹⁰ Perhaps in some towns a person will say to you, 'Come here, stay a little while with us.' At that time you will stay in his camp in that town.

¹¹ Perhaps you will come to other towns, they will ignore you, they will not ask you to stay in their town, they will not listen to God's word. If they do that do not stay in that town. Brush the dust from your shoes. When you do that you will show them God will be angry with them after ignoring his word. Then leave that town.

^12a Yes, that is all. Go by twos.”

^12b After that they went. As they were going they were telling people, “You have been ignoring God. Leave doing wrong and believe in God!”

¹³ They were sending away many evil spirits, they put medicine on many sick people, they were asking God, “Will you make this person well.” After that the sick person became well. God made them well.

¹⁴ King Herod Heroic heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “John Yah is gracious the Immerser has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

¹⁵ But others said, “He is Elijah My God Yah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, or like one of the prophets.”

¹⁶ But Herod Heroic, when he heard this, said, “This is John Yah is gracious, whom I beheaded. He has risen from the dead.”

¹⁷ For Herod Heroic himself had sent out and arrested John Yah is gracious, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip Loves horses’s wife, for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John Yah is gracious said to Herod Heroic, “It violates the Torah ·Teaching· for you to marry your brother’s wife.”

¹⁹ Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t,

²⁰ for Herod Heroic feared John Yah is gracious, knowing that he was a upright and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.

²¹ Then a convenient day came, that Herod Heroic on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee District, Circuit.

²² When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod Heroic and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

²³ He swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John Yah is gracious the Immerser.”

²⁵ She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, “I want you to give me right now the head of John Yah is gracious the Immerser on a platter.”

⁷ Jesus called together his 12 close followers. He told them, “You have to go to every community and tell my message to the people. Let them take care of you when you go there. Don’t take a bag, or food, or money or spare clothes with you. Just take your sandals and a walking stick. After you get to a community, and that community is happy for you to stay, you have to camp in only one house. Don’t move around to different houses. But if a community doesn’t want to have you there, and if they will not listen to you, then you have to go away from it. As you leave it, shake the dust off your feet. That will show that mob that they will get trouble. It will be like you are telling them, ‘You didn’t take notice of my message, so God will judge you and punish you.’” And Jesus told his close followers, “I’m giving you my power now to force bad spirits out from people.” Then Jesus split them into 6 teams with 2 men in each team, and sent them out to do God’s work.

¹² The teams did as Jesus told them. They went to other communities and told everyone to turn around, change their lives and come back to God’s way.

¹³ Those men sent a lot of bad spirits out of people. And they put olive oil on a lot of sick people, like medicine for them, and those sick people got better.

¹⁴ This is the story about what happened to John the Baptiser. The big boss called King Herod had a brother called Philip. Philip had a wife called Herodias. Herodias didn’t want to live with Philip any more, so she left him, and married Herod. John kept on telling Herod, “You are breaking God’s law. You shouldn’t have your brother’s wife.” Herodias hated John for saying this and she wanted to kill him, but Herod sent some soldiers to grab John and keep him in jail, so Herodias couldn’t do anything to him. John was a good man and lived God’s way all the time, so Herod was frightened of him. And Herod liked to talk with John, but John’s words confused him and upset him. Some time later Herod had a birthday party, and Herodias got her chance to hurt John. All the leaders of Herod’s army and the government bosses from Galilee country were there at Herod’s party. The daughter of Herodias danced for them at that party. Everybody was really happy with her dancing, so Herod made a strong promise to her, he told her, “I want to give you a really good present. You can ask for anything. I will give you anything you ask for, even as much as half of this country. This is true. I’m not lying.” That young girl went outside and asked her mother, “What will I ask for?” Her mother said, “Go back in and ask the big boss to send a soldier to cut off John the Baptiser’s head, and give it to you as a present.” The girl ran back into the party and said to King Herod, “I want you to give me John the Baptiser’s head on a big plate, and I want it right now.” When Herod heard these words he was really sad. But he didn’t want to break his promise and be ashamed, so he sent a soldier to cut off John’s head and bring it back to the girl on a big plate. The soldier went to the jail and cut off John’s head and brought it back to the party, and he gave it to the young girl, and then she gave it to her mother. John’s friends heard this bad news. They came and got his body, then they took it away and buried it. Later lots of people heard about what Jesus was doing and they talked about him all the time. Some people said, “Jesus is really Elijah, that old man that told God’s message a long time ago. God made him alive again.” Some other people said, “Jesus is a man talking for God, just like those other men that told God’s message a long time ago.” But some people reckoned, “Jesus is really John the Baptiser. God made John alive again and gave him power to do great things.” King Herod heard these stories and said, “I got my soldiers to cut John’s head off, but this man now, he has to be John the Baptiser. I reckon God made him alive again.”

⁷ And he called the twelve and beganne to sende them two and two and gave them power over vnclene spretes.

⁸ And commaunded the that they shuld take nothinge vnto their Iorney save a rodde only: Nether scrippe nether breed nether mony in their pourses:

⁹ but shuld be shood with sandals. And that they shuld not put on two coottes.

¹⁰ And he sayd vnto them: whersoever ye entre in to an house there abyde tyll ye departe thence

¹¹ And whosoever shall not receave you nor heare you when ye departe thence shake of the duste that is vnder youre fete for a witnesse vnto them. I saye verely vnto you it shalbe easyer for zodom and Gomor at the daye of iudgement then for that cite.

¹⁸ Iohn sayd vnto Herode: It is not laufull for the to have thy brothers wyfe.

¹⁹ Herodias layd wayte for him and wolde have killed him but she coulde not.

²⁵ And she cam in streygth waye with haste vnto the kynge and axed sayinge: I will that thou geve me by and by in a charger the heed of Iohn Baptist.

¹⁴ King Herod heard this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

¹⁵ Some others said, “He is Elijah.” Still others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets in ancient times.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard this he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”

¹⁷ For Herod sent to have John arrested and he had him bound in prison on account of Herodias (his brother Philip's wife), because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John told Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ But Herodias held on to anger against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not,

²⁰ for Herod feared John; he knew that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. Listening to him made him greatly upset, yet he heard him gladly.

²¹ Then the opportunity came when Herod had his birthday and he made a dinner for his officials, and his commanders, and leaders of Galilee.

²² The daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced for them, and she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you.”

²³ He swore to her saying, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask him for?” She said, “The head of John the Baptist.”

²⁵ She immediately hurried back to the king, and she asked, saying, “I want you to give me, right now, the head of John the Baptist on a wooden platter.”

⁷ He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out two by two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

⁸ He commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse,

⁹ but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.

¹⁰ He said to them, “Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you depart from there.

¹¹ Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”

¹¹ And whoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence shake off the dust under your feet, for a testimony against them. Verily I say to you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and observed him: and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ And when a convenient day had come, that Herod on his birth-day made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief men of Galilee;

²² And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod, and them that sat with him, the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he swore to her, Whatever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, to the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went forth, and said to her mother, What shall I ask? and she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And she came in forthwith with haste to the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou shouldst give me, immediately, in a dish, the head of John the Baptist.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is not leaveful to thee, to have the wife of thy brother.

¹⁹ And Herodias laid ambush to him, and would slay him, and might not.

²⁰ And Herod dreaded John, and knew him a just man and holy, and kept him. And Herod heard him, and he did many things, and gladly heard him.

²¹ And when a covenable day was fallen, Herod in his birthday made a supper to the princes, and tribunes, and to the greatest of Galilee.

²² And when the daughter of that Herodias was come in, and danced, and pleased to Herod or and pleased Herod, and also to men that sat at the meat, the king said to the damsel, Ask thou of me what thou wilt, and I shall give to thee.

²³ And he swore to her, That what-ever thou ask, I shall give to thee, though it be half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And when she was come in anon with haste to the king, she asked, and said, I will that anon, thou give to me in a dish the head of John Baptist.

(And King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ fame had spread far and wide, and he said, John the Baptist hath risen again from the dead, and so works of power, or miracles, work in him.)

¹⁵ Others said, That it is Elias (or He is Elijah); but others said, That it is a prophet, as one of the prophets.

¹⁶ And when this thing was heard, Herod said, This is John, whom I have beheaded, he is risen again from death (or he hath risen from the dead).

¹⁷ For that Herod sent (for), and held John, and bound him into prison, for Herodias, the wife of Philip, his brother; for he had wedded her.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is not leaveful to thee (or It is not lawful for thee), to have the wife of thy brother.

¹⁹ And Herodias laid ambush to him, and would slay him, and might not. (And Herodias laid ambush for him, and wanted to kill him, but could find no opportunity to do so.)

²⁰ And Herod dreaded John, and knew him a just man and holy, and kept him, (or And Herod feared John, and knew him to be a just and holy man, and kept him in custody, or And Herod revered John, and knew him to be a just and holy man, and kept him safe). And Herod heard him, and he did many things, and gladly heard him.

²¹ And when a covenable day was fallen, Herod in his birthday made a supper to the princes, and tribunes, and to the greatest of Galilee. (And when an opportune day had fallen, Herod held a supper on his birthday for the leaders, or the officials, and the tribunes, and for the greatest of Galilee.)

²² And when the daughter of that Herodias was come in, and danced, and pleased to Herod or and pleased Herod, and also to (the) men that sat at the meat (or and also the men who sat at the meal), the king said to the damsel, Ask thou of me what thou wilt, and I shall give (it) to thee.

²³ And he swore to her, That whatever thou ask, I shall give (it) to thee, though it be (even) half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And when she had gone out, she said to her mother, What shall I ask (for)? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And when she was come in anon (or at once) with haste to the king, she asked, and said, I will that anon, (or I desire, or I want, at once), (that) thou give to me in a dish the head of John (the) Baptist.

⁷ And he clepide togidere twelue, and bigan to sende hem bi two togidere; and yaf to hem power of vnclene spiritis,

⁸ and comaundide hem, that thei schulde not take ony thing in the weie, but a yerde oneli, not a scrippe, ne breed, nether money in the girdil,

⁹ but schod with sandalies, and that thei schulden not be clothid with twei cootis.

¹⁰ And he seide to hem, Whidur euer ye entren in to an hous, dwelle ye there, til ye goon out fro thennus.

¹¹ And who euer resseyueth you not, ne herith you, go ye out fro thennus, and schake awei the powdir fro youre feet, in to witnessyng to hem.

¹² And thei yeden forth, and prechiden, that men schulden do penaunce.

¹³ And thei castiden out many feendis, and anoyntiden with oyle many sijk men, and thei weren heelid.

¹⁴ And kyng Eroude herde, for his name was maad opyn, and seide, That Joon Baptist hath risen ayen fro deeth, and therfor vertues worchen in hym.

¹⁵ Othir seiden, That it is Helie; but othir seiden, That it is a profete, as oon of profetis.

¹⁶ And whanne this thing was herd, Eroude seide, This Joon, whom Y haue biheedide, is risun ayen fro deeth.

¹⁷ For thilke Eroude sente, and helde Joon, and boond hym in to prisoun, for Erodias, the wijf of Filip, his brothir; for he hadde weddid hir.

¹⁸ For Joon seide to Eroude, It is not leueful to thee, to haue the wijf of thi brothir.

¹⁹ And Erodias leide aspies to hym, and wolde sle hym, and myyte not.

²⁰ And Eroude dredde Joon, and knewe hym a iust man and hooli, and kepte hym. And Eroude herde hym, and he dide many thingis, and gladli herde hym.

²¹ And whanne a couenable dai was fallun, Eroude in his birthdai made a soper to the princis, and tribunes, and to the grettest of Galilee.

²² And whanne the douyter of thilke Erodias was comun ynne, and daunside, and pleside to Eroude, and also to men that saten at the mete, the kyng seide to the damysel, Axe thou of me what thou wolt, and Y schal yyue to thee.

²³ And he swore to hir, That what euer thou axe, Y schal yyue to thee, thouy it be half my kyngdom.

²⁴ And whanne sche hadde goon out, sche seide to hir modir, What schal Y axe? And sche seide, The heed of Joon Baptist.

²⁵ And whanne sche was comun ynne anoon with haast to the kyng, sche axide, and seide, Y wole that anoon thou yyue to me in a dische the heed of Joon Baptist.

¹³ and many demons they were casting out, and they were anointing with oil many infirm, and they were healing them.

¹⁴ And the king Herod heard, (for his name became public,) and he said — 'John the Baptist out of the dead was raised, and because of this the mighty powers are working in him.'

¹⁵ Others said — 'It is Elijah,' and others said — 'It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.'

¹⁶ And Herod having heard, said — 'He whom I did behead — John — this is he; he was raised out of the dead.'

¹⁷ For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her,

¹⁸ for John said to Herod — 'It is not lawful to thee to have the wife of thy brother;'

¹⁹ and Herodias was having a quarrel with him, and was willing to kill him, and was not able,

²⁰ for Herod was fearing John, knowing him a man righteous and holy, and was keeping watch over him, and having heard him, was doing many things, and hearing him gladly.

²¹ And a seasonable day having come, when Herod on his birthday was making a supper to his great men, and to the chiefs of thousands, and to the first men of Galilee,

²² and the daughter of that Herodias having come in, and having danced, and having pleased Herod and those reclining (at meat) with him, the king said to the damsel, 'Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give to thee,'

²³ and he sware to her — 'Whatever thou mayest ask me, I will give to thee — unto the half of my kingdom.'

²⁴ And she, having gone forth, said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for myself?' and she said, 'The head of John the Baptist;'

²⁵ and having come in immediately with haste unto the king, she asked, saying, 'I will that thou mayest give me presently, upon a plate, the head of John the Baptist.'
