³⁷ But he answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred shillings’ worth of bread, and give them to eat?

³⁸ And he saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁹ And he commanded them that all should sit down by companies upon the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

⁴² And they all ate, and were filled.

⁴³ And they took up broken pieces, twelve basketfuls, and also of the fishes.

⁴⁴ And they that ate the loaves were five thousand men.

⁴⁵ And straightway he constrained his disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side to Bethsaida, while he himself sendeth the multitude away.

⁴⁶ And after he had taken leave of them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷ And when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

⁴⁸ And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them:

⁴⁹ but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;

⁵⁰ for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

⁵¹ And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves;

⁵² for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

⁵³ And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

⁵⁴ And when they were come out of the boat, straightway the people knew him,

⁵² for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

⁵³ And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

⁵⁴ And when they were come out of the boat, straightway the people knew him,

³⁷ But he replied, “ No, you yourselves give them something to eat!” They replied, “◄We could not buy enough bread to feed this crowd, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days!/How could we buy enough bread to feed this mob, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days?►” RHQ

³⁸ But he replied to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and find out!” They went and found out and then they told him, “We have only five flat loaves and two cooked fish!”

³⁹ He instructed the disciples to tell all the people to sit down on the green grass.

⁴⁰ So the people sat in groups. There were 50 people in some groups and 100 people in other groups.

⁴¹ Jesus took the five flat loaves and the two fish. He looked up towards heaven and thanked God for them. Then he broke the loaves and fish into pieces and kept giving them to the disciples in order that they would distribute them to the people.

⁴² Everyone ate this food until they all had enough to eat!

⁴³ The disciples then collected twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and of the fish that were left over.

⁴⁴ There were approximately five thousand men who ate the bread and fish. They did not even count the women and children.

⁴⁵ Right away Jesus told his disciples to get into the boat and then go ahead of him to Bethsaida town, which was further around Lake Galilee. He stayed and dismissed the many people who were there.

⁴⁶ After he said goodbye to the people, he went up into the hills in order to pray.

⁴⁷ When it was evening, the disciples' boat was in the middle of the lake and Jesus was by himself on the land.

⁴⁸ He saw that the wind was blowing against them as they rowed. As a result, they were having great difficulty. He approached them early in the morning, when it was still dark, by walking on the water. He intended to walk by them.

⁴⁹ They saw him walking on the water, but they thought that he was a ghost. They screamed

⁵⁰ because they all were terrified when they saw him. But he talked to them. He said to them, “Be calm! Do not be afraid, because it is I!”

⁵¹ He got into the boat and sat down with them and the wind immediately stopped blowing. They were completely amazed about what he had done.

⁵² Although they had seen Jesus multiply the bread and the fish, they did not understand from that how powerful he was, as they should have. They did not think clearly about it.

⁵³ After they went further around Lake Galilee in a boat, they came to the shore at Gennesaret town. Then they tied up the boat there.

⁵⁴ As soon as they got out of the boat, the people there recognized Jesus.

³⁷ But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

³⁹ And he made them all be seated in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they were placed in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ And he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing over them; and when the cakes were broken, he gave them to the disciples to put before the people; and he made division of the two fishes among them all.

⁴² And they all took of the food and had enough.

⁴³ And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken bits and of the fishes.

⁴⁴ And those who took of the bread were five thousand men.

⁴⁵ And straight away he made his disciples get into the boat, and go before him to the other side to Beth-saida, while he himself sent the people away.

⁴⁶ And after he had sent them away, he went up into a mountain for prayer.

⁴⁷ And by evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he by himself on the land.

⁴⁸ And seeing that they had trouble in getting their boat through the water, because the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea; and he would have gone past them;

⁴⁹ But they, when they saw him walking on the sea, took him for a spirit, and gave a loud cry:

⁵⁰ For they all saw him, and were troubled. But straight away he said to them, Take heart, it is I, have no fear.

⁵¹ And he went to them into the boat, and the wind went down, and they were full of wonder in themselves;

⁵² For it was not clear to them about the bread; but their hearts were hard.

⁵³ And when they had gone across, they came to Gennesaret, and got their boat to land.

⁵⁴ And when they had got out of the boat, the people quickly had news of him,

³⁷ And he answering said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they say to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them to eat?

³⁸ And he says to them, How many loaves have ye? Go and see. And when they knew they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁹ And he ordered them to make them all sit down by companies on the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they sat down in ranks by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples that they might set them before them. And the two fishes he divided among all.

⁴² And they all ate and were satisfied.

⁴³ And they took up of fragments the fillings of twelve hand-baskets, and of the fishes.

⁴⁴ And those that ate of the loaves were five thousand men.

⁴⁵ And immediately he compelled his disciples to go on board ship, and to go on before to the other side to Bethsaida, while he sends the crowd away.

⁴⁶ And, having dismissed them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷ And when evening was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone upon the land.

⁴⁸ And seeing them labouring in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he comes to them walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.

⁴⁹ But they, seeing him walking on the sea, thought that it was an apparition, and cried out.

⁵⁰ For all saw him and were troubled. And immediately he spoke with them, and says to them, Be of good courage: it is I; be not afraid.

⁵¹ And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind fell. And they were exceedingly beyond measure astonished in themselves and wondered;

⁵² for they understood not through the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

⁵³ And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and made the shore.

⁵⁴ And on their coming out of the ship, immediately recognising him,

³⁷ And he answering said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said to him: Let us go and buy bread for two hundred pence, and we will give them to eat.

⁴⁷ And when it was late, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and himself alone on the land.

⁴⁸ And seeing them labouring in rowing, (for the wind was against them,) and about the fourth watch of the night, he cometh to them walking upon the sea, and he would have passed by them.

⁴⁹ But they seeing him walking upon the sea, thought it was an apparition, and they cried out.

⁵⁰ For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he spoke with them, and said to them: Have a good heart, it is I, fear ye not.

⁵¹ And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind ceased: and they were far more astonished within themselves:

⁵² For they understood not concerning the loaves; for their heart was blinded.

⁵³ And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Genezareth, and set to the shore.

⁵⁴ And when they were gone out of the ship, immediately they knew him:

³⁷ But answering, He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

³⁸ But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ Then He gave orders for them all to recline in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they reclined in parties of hundreds and of fifties.

⁴¹ And taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves, and was giving them to His disciples, so that they might set them before them; and the two fish He divided to all.

⁴² So they all ate and were filled.

⁴³ And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and from the fish.

⁴⁴ Now those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.

⁴⁵ And immediately He compelled His disciples to step into the boat and to go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, until He could dismiss the crowd.

⁴⁸ Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth watch of the night He came to them walking on the sea, and He intended to pass by them.

⁴⁹ And seeing Him walking on the sea, they supposed Him to be a spirit, and they cried out;

⁵⁰ for they all saw Him and were troubled. But immediately He spoke with them, and said to them, “Have courage! It is I AM; do not be afraid.”

⁵¹ Then He went up with them into the boat and the wind ceased. And they were greatly astounded among themselves beyond measure, and were marveling.

⁵² For they had not understood concerning the loaves, because their heart was hardened.

⁵³ And having crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there.

⁵⁴ And when they came out of the boat, immediately having recognized Him,

³⁷ But in reply He said to them, “You feed them!” They say to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and feed them?”

³⁸ So He says to them: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” When they knew they said, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ Then He directed them all to recline in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ So they reclined in ‘plots’ of hundreds and of fifties.

⁴¹ And taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to serve the people; He also divided the two fish among them all.

⁴² Well they all ate and were filled.

⁴³ And they picked up twelve full baskets of broken pieces; also of the fish.

⁴⁴ There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.

⁴⁵ Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He dismissed the crowd.

⁴⁶ And after taking leave of them He went up the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷ Now when evening had passed, the boat was in the middle of the sea; and He was alone on the land.

⁴⁸ And He saw them straining at rowing, because the wind was against them. Well about the fourth watch of the night He comes to them walking on the water, and would have passed by them;

⁴⁹ but they saw Him walking on the water, supposed He was a ghost, and yelled!

⁵⁰ Because they all saw Him and were terrified. Immediately He spoke with them and said: “Have courage! It is I; don't be afraid!”

⁵¹ Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were totally astounded within themselves, and kept marveling.

⁵² Because they had not understood about the loaves—their hearts had been hardened.

⁵³ After they had crossed over, they came to the land of Genesaret and anchored there.

⁵⁴ When they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,

³⁷ But Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat.” “What? We'd need more than six month's pay to buy bread to feed all these people,” the disciples replied.

³⁸ “Well, how much bread do you have?” Jesus asked. “Go and see.” They went and checked, and told him, “Five loaves, and a couple of fish.”

³⁹ Jesus told everyone to sit down in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ They sat in groups of hundreds and fifties.

⁴¹ Then he took the five loaves and the two fish. Looking up to heaven he blessed the food and broke the bread into pieces. Then he handed the bread to the disciples to give to the people, and he divided the fish up between all of them.

⁴² Everyone ate until they were full.

⁴³ Then they collected up the leftovers of the bread and fish—twelve basketfuls.

⁴⁴ A total of five thousand men plus their families ate the food.

⁴⁵ Immediately after this Jesus instructed his disciples to get back into the boat. They were to go on ahead to Bethsaida on the other side of the lake while he sent the people on their way.

⁴⁶ Once he'd said goodbye to them he went up into the hills to pray.

⁴⁷ Late that evening the boat was in the middle of the lake while Jesus was alone, still on land.

⁴⁸ He could see them being buffeted about as they rowed hard because the wind was blowing against them. In the early morning hours Jesus came to them, walking on the water. He would have passed them,

⁴⁹ but when they saw him walking on the water they thought he was a ghost. They screamed out

⁵⁰ because they could all see him and were absolutely terrified. Jesus told them right away: “Don't worry, it's me. Don't be afraid!”

⁵¹ He went over to them and climbed into the boat, and the wind died down. They were totally shocked,

⁵² for they hadn't understood the meaning of the feeding miracle due to their stubborn, hard-hearted attitude.

⁵³ After crossing the Sea they arrived at Gennesaret and moored the boat.

⁵⁴ As they climbed out, the people immediately recognized Jesus.

³⁷ But he answered, and said vnto them, Giue yee them to eate. And they said vnto him, Shall we goe, and buy two hundreth peny worth of bread, and giue them to eate?

³⁸ Then he sayde vnto them, Howe many loaues haue ye? goe and looke. And when they knewe it, they sayd, Fiue, and two fishes.

³⁹ So he commanded them to make them all sit downe by companies vpon the greene grasse.

⁴⁹ And when they saw him walking vpon the sea, they supposed it had bene a spirit, and cried out.

⁵⁰ For they all saw him, and were sore afrayd: but anon he talked with them, and said vnto them, Be ye of good comfort: it is I, be not afrayd.

⁵¹ Then he went vp vnto them into the ship, and the winde ceased, and they were much more amased in them selues, and marueiled.

⁵² For they had not considered the matter of the loaues, because their hearts were hardened.

³⁸ In reply he said to them, “How much damper do you have? Look.” After looking they said to him, “Five dampers and two small fish.”

³⁹ He told his men, “Tell the people to sit down.” They told them to sit down on the grass in groups.

⁴⁰ They sat down at his word, here 50 were in a group, over there 100 were in a group. All the others were like that, they were in groups everywhere.

⁴¹ Jesus picked up their dampers, he looked upwards, he said to God, “You are the one who gave us this food. Thank you! You have helped us! You are good.” When he had said that, he broke the dampers into pieces, he gave them to his men, he said to them, “Give them to these people.” He did the same sort of thing with the two fish also.

⁴² They all ate till they were full.

⁴³ After that his men picked up the leftovers, they put them in carrying dishes, they filled 12 big carrying dishes.

⁴⁴ Many people ate. Five thousand men ate that food.

⁴⁵ After that Jesus told his men, “Get in the dinghy, go to the other side, to Bethsaida. Later I will come to you.” They went ahead in the dinghy. Then Jesus sent all the others to their camps.

⁴⁶ After that Jesus climbed up a hill to talk to God.

⁴⁷ It became dark. He was staying there alone. His men were in the dinghy in the middle of the water, they were in a bad way. A big wind was blowing for them.

⁴⁸ They were still trying in vain to make the dinghy go, in vain they were trying to make it go with oars (lit. 'with wood') because of the big wind. Jesus saw them from a long way off. He came to them before it was day. He was going on top of the water. He kept coming close to them.

⁴⁹ His men saw him, he was following them from behind on top of the water. They did not recognise him, they were thinking something like an evil spirit was coming. They were afraid of him, they really called out with fear.

⁵⁰ Jesus told them, “Don't be afraid. It is me coming. Quieten down, stay well.”

⁵¹ He climbed in the dinghy with them. Right then the wind abated. His men wondered at him. They were saying to each other, “Yes, look! He was walking on top of the water. As soon as he came right then the wind abated.”

⁵² They did not understand. Earlier they saw him give food to 5,000 men from a little fish and damper. They didn't keep it in their minds. They were still thinking to themselves, “He is just a person like us.”

⁵³ After that they arrived in that country Gennesaret. They tied the dinghy with a rope at the edge of the waterhole.

⁵⁴ Jesus got out of the dinghy, those inhabitants of the place saw him, straight away they knew him.

³⁷ But he answering said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they say to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denaries' worth of bread, and give them to eat?

³⁸ He saith to them, How many loaves have ye? Go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

⁴⁸ And when he saw them toiling hard in rowing, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh to them, walking upon the lake. And he would have passed by them;

⁴⁹ but they, seeing him walking upon the lake, thought it was a spectre, and cried out.

⁵⁰ For they all saw him, and were terrified. But he immediately spoke with them, and saith to them, Be of good cheer; it is I, be not afraid.

⁵¹ And he went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were exceedingly astonished, beyond measure.

³⁷ But Jesus answered, “It is for you to give them something to eat.” “Are we to go and spend almost a year's wages on bread,” they asked, “to give them to eat?”

³⁸ “How many loaves have you?” he asked; “Go, and see.” When they had found out, they told him, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ Jesus directed them to make all the people take their seats on the green grass, in parties;

⁴⁰ and they sat down in groups — in hundreds, and in fifties.

⁴¹ Taking the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus looked up to heaven, and said the blessing; he broke the loaves into pieces, and gave them to his disciples for them to serve out to the people, and he divided the two fish also amongst them all.

⁴⁸ Seeing them labouring at the oars — for the wind was against them — about three hours after midnight Jesus came towards them, walking on the water, intending to join them.

⁴⁹ But, when they saw him walking on the water, they thought it was a ghost, and cried out;

⁵⁰ for all of them saw him, and were terrified. But Jesus at once spoke to them. “Courage!” he said, “it is I; do not be afraid!”

⁵¹ Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind dropped. The disciples were utterly amazed,

⁵² for they had not understood about the loaves, their minds being slow to learn.

⁵³ When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret, and moored the boat.

⁵⁴ But they had no sooner left her than the people, recognising Jesus,

⁵⁰ for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them, and said to them, “Take heart! Ena Na I AM (the Living God)! Don’t be afraid.”

⁵¹ He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled;

⁵² for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

⁵³ When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

⁵⁴ When they had come out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him,

³⁷ Jesus said to them, “You mob give them some food to eat.” But they said, “What? We haven’t got that much food. Do you want us to go and buy a lot of bread for them? That will cost thousands of dollars.”

³⁸ Jesus said to his followers, “How much food have you got? Go and have a look.” They came back to him and said, “We’ve got 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.”

³⁹ Jesus told his followers to get the people to sit on the green grass in groups, maybe about 50 people or about 100 people in each group.

⁴¹ Then Jesus picked up the bread and the fish, looked up to the sky and said, “Thank you God for this bread and fish.” Then Jesus broke up the bread and fish and gave the pieces to his followers to give to the people.

⁴² All of the people had a good feed

⁴³ and after that Jesus’s followers picked up the bits of food left over. They filled up 12 big baskets with the food that people didn’t eat.

⁴⁴ A really big mob of people had a feed that day. There were 5,000 men, as well as women and kids.

⁴⁵ As soon as they finished eating Jesus told his followers, “Get into your boat and row across the lake to a place called Bethsaida. I will follow you mob some time later.” Then he started telling all the people, “You mob can go home now. Goodbye.”

⁴⁶ After he said goodbye to them Jesus went up into the hills to pray.

⁴⁷ Night time came, and Jesus was still on the land all alone, and the boat was half-way across the lake.

⁴⁸ Later that night Jesus looked out and saw that his followers were having a hard time rowing the boat. The wind was stopping them. Just before daylight Jesus walked on the water toward to the boat and it looked like he was going to keep going past them.

⁴⁹ The followers of Jesus saw him walking on the water and they thought he was a ghost. They got really frightened and screamed. Straight away Jesus said to them, “It’s all right. It’s me, Jesus. Don’t be frightened.”

⁵¹ Then Jesus got into the boat with his followers and straight away the wind stopped blowing. The men in the boat were surprised.

⁵² They still couldn’t understand about Jesus. They saw what he did with the bread and fish the day before, but they couldn’t work it out. It was like their brains were no good.

⁵³ Then they came to the land again, to the country called Gennesaret, and they tied up the boat.

⁵⁴ A lot of people saw Jesus getting out of the boat and they knew who he was,

³⁷ He answered and sayde vnto them: geve ye them to eate. And they sayde vnto him: shall we goo and bye ii.C. penyworth of breed and geve them to eate?

³⁸ He sayde vnto them: how many loves have ye? Goo and loke. And when they had serched they sayde: v. and .ii. fysshes.

⁴⁴ And they that ate were about fyve thousand men.

⁴⁵ And streyght waye he caused his disciples to goo into the shipe and to goo over the water before vnto Bethsaida whyll he sent awaye the people.

⁴⁶ And assone as he had sent them away he departed into a moutayne to praye.

⁴⁷ And when even was come the ship was in the middes of the see and he alone on the londe,

⁴⁸ and he sawe the troubled in rowynge for the wynde was cotrary vnto them. And aboute the fourth quartre of the nyght he came vnto the walkinge apon the see and wolde have passed by them.

⁴⁹ When they sawe him walkinge apon the see they supposed it had bene a sprete and cryed oute:

⁵⁰ For they all sawe him and were afrayed. And anon he talked with them and sayde vnto them: be of good chere it is I be not a frayed.

⁵¹ And he went vp vnto them into the shippe and the wynde ceased and they were sore amased in them selves beyonde measure and marveyled.

⁵² For they remembred not of the loves because their hertes were blynded.

⁵³ And they came over and went into the londe of Genezareth and drue vp into the haven.

⁴⁵ Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he himself sent the multitude away.

⁴⁶ After he had taken leave of them, he went up the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷ When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.

⁴⁸ Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them,

⁴⁹ but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;

⁵⁰ for they all saw him and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them and said to them, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

⁵¹ He got into the boat with them; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled;

⁵² for they hadn’t understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

⁵³ When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore.

⁵⁴ When they had come out of the boat, immediately the people recognized him,

³⁷ But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

³⁸ He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ He took the five loaves and the two fish; and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish amongst them all.

⁴² They all ate and were filled.

⁴³ They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of the fish.

⁴⁴ Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

⁴⁴ And they that ate, were five thousand of men.

⁴⁵ And anon he made his disciples to go up into a boat, to pass before him over the sea to Bethsaida, while he let the people go.

⁴⁶ And when he had left them, he went into an high hill, to pray.

⁴⁷ And when it was even, the boat was in the middle or in the midst of the sea, and he alone in the land;

⁴⁸ and he saw them travailing in rowing; for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth waking of the night, he wandering on the sea, came to them, and would pass them.

⁴⁹ And as they saw him wandering on the sea, they guessed that it were a phantom, and cried out;

⁵⁰ for all saw him, and they were afraid, or they were troubled, or disturbed. And anon he spake with them, and said to them, Trust ye, I am; do not ye dread.

⁵¹ And he came up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they wondered more within themselves;

⁵² for they understood not of the loaves; for their heart was blinded.

⁵³ And when they were passed over the sea, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and setted to land.

⁵⁴ And when they were gone out of the boat, anon they knew him.

³⁷ And he answered, and said to them, Give ye (something) to them for to eat. And they said to him, Go we, and buy we loaves with two hundred pence, and (then) we shall give (something) to them for to eat.

³⁸ And he saith to them, How many loaves have ye? Go ye, and see. And when they had known, they say, Five, and two fishes.

⁴³ And they took (up) the remnants of broken meats, twelve coffins full, and of the fishes. (And they gathered up the remaining pieces of food, that is, of the bread and the fish, twelve baskets full.)

⁴⁴ And they that ate, were five thousand of men.

⁴⁵ And anon he made his disciples to go up into a boat, to pass before him over the sea to Bethsaida, while he left the people. (And at once he made his disciples to go up into a boat, to cross over the lake to Bethsaida ahead of him, while he let the people go, or while he dismissed the people.)

⁴⁶ And when he had left them, he went into an high hill, to pray. (And when he had dismissed them, or had let them go, he went up onto a high hill, or a mountain, to pray.)

⁴⁷ And when it was even(ing), the boat was in the middle or in the midst of the sea, and he alone in the land (or and he was alone on the land);

⁴⁸ and he saw them travailing in rowing; for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth waking of the night, he wandering on the sea, came to them, and would pass (by) them. (and he saw them labouring, or struggling, with the rowing; for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the lake, and would pass by them.)

⁴⁹ And as they saw him wandering on the sea (or And as they saw him walking on the lake), they guessed that it were a phantom, and cried out;

⁵⁰ for (they) all saw him, and they were afraid, or and they were troubled, or disturbed. And anon he spake with them, and said to them, Trust ye, I am (he); do not ye dread, (or And at once he spoke with them, and said to them, Have trust, it is me; do not fear).

⁵¹ And he came up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they wondered more within themselves;

⁵² for they understood not of the loaves; for their heart was blinded.

⁵³ And when they were passed over the sea (or And when they had crossed over the lake), they came into the land of Gennesaret, and setted to land.

⁵⁴ And when they were gone out of the boat, anon (or at once) they knew him.

³⁷ And he answeride, and seide to hem, Yyue ye to hem to ete. And thei seiden to hym, Go we, and bie we looues with two hundrid pens, and we schulen yyue to hem to ete.

³⁸ And he seith to hem, Hou many looues han ye? Go ye, and se. And whanne thei hadden knowe, thei seien, Fyue, and two fischis.

³⁹ And he comaundide to hem, that thei schulden make alle men sitte to mete bi cumpanyes, on greene heye.

⁴⁰ And thei saten doun bi parties, bi hundridis, and bi fifties.

⁴¹ And whanne he hadde take the fyue looues, and twei fischis, he biheelde in to heuene, and blesside, and brak looues, and yaf to hise disciplis, that thei schulden sette bifor hem. And he departide twei fischis to alle;

⁴² and alle eeten, and weren fulfillid.

⁴³ And thei token the relifs of brokun metis, twelue cofyns ful, and of the fischis.

⁴⁴ And thei that eeten, weren fyue thousynde of men.

⁴⁵ And anoon he maad hise disciplis to go up in to a boot, to passe bifor hym ouer the se to Bethsaida, the while he lefte the puple.

⁴⁶ And whanne he hadde left hem, he wente in to an hille, to preye.

⁴⁷ And whanne it was euen, the boot was in the myddil of the see, and he aloone in the loond;

⁴⁸ and he say hem trauelynge in rowyng; for the wynde was contrarie to hem. And aboute the fourthe wakynge of the nyyt, he wandride on the see, and cam to hem, and wolde passe hem.

⁴⁹ And as thei sayn hym wandrynge on the see, thei gessiden that it weren a fantum, and crieden out;

⁵⁰ for alle sayn hym, and thei weren afraied. And anoon he spak with hem, and seide to hem, Triste ye, Y am; nyle ye drede.

⁵¹ And he cam vp to hem in to the boot, and the wynde ceesside. And thei wondriden more `with ynne hem silf;

⁵² for thei vndurstoden not of the looues; for her herte was blyndid.

⁵³ And whanne thei weren passid ouer the see, thei camen in to the lond of Genasareth, and settiden to loond.

⁵⁴ And whanne thei weren gon out of the boot, anoon thei knewen hym.

³⁷ And he answering said to them, 'Give ye them to eat,' and they say to him, 'Having gone away, may we buy two hundred denaries' worth of loaves, and give to them to eat?'

³⁸ And he saith to them, 'How many loaves have ye? go and see;' and having known, they say, 'Five, and two fishes.'

³⁹ And he commanded them to make all recline in companies upon the green grass,

⁴⁰ and they sat down in squares, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves, and was giving to his disciples, that they may set before them, and the two fishes divided he to all,

⁴² and they did all eat, and were filled,

⁴³ and they took up of broken pieces twelve hand-baskets full, and of the fishes,

⁴⁴ and those eating of the loaves were about five thousand men.

⁴⁵ And immediately he constrained his disciples to go into the boat, and to go before to the other side, unto Bethsaida, till he may let the multitude away,

⁴⁶ and having taken leave of them, he went away to the mountain to pray.

⁴⁷ And evening having come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone upon the land;

⁴⁸ and he saw them harassed in the rowing, for the wind was against them, and about the fourth watch of the night he doth come to them walking on the sea, and wished to pass by them.

⁴⁹ And they having seen him walking on the sea, thought it to be an apparition, and cried out,

⁵⁰ for they all saw him, and were troubled, and immediately he spake with them, and saith to them, 'Take courage, I am he, be not afraid.'

⁵¹ And he went up unto them to the boat, and the wind lulled, and greatly out of measure were they amazed in themselves, and were wondering,

⁵² for they understood not concerning the loaves, for their heart hath been hard.

⁵³ And having passed over, they came upon the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore,

⁵⁴ and they having come forth out of the boat, immediately having recognised him,
