¹³ And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard thereof; for his name had become known: and he said, John the Baptizer is risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him.

¹⁵ But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even as one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But Herod, when he heard thereof, said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife; for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ And Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him; and she could not;

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat, he would not reject her.

²⁷ And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when his disciples heard thereof, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ And the apostles gather themselves together unto Jesus; and they told him all things, whatsoever they had done, and whatsoever they had taught.

³¹ And he saith unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

³² And they went away in the boat to a desert place apart.

³³ And the people saw them going, and many knew them, and they ran together there on foot from all the cities, and outwent them.

³⁴ And he came forth and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, The place is desert, and the day is now far spent;

³⁶ send them away, that they may go into the country and villages round about, and buy themselves somewhat to eat.

³⁷ But he answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred shillings’ worth of bread, and give them to eat?

³⁸ And he saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁹ And he commanded them that all should sit down by companies upon the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

²² And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

³³ And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

³⁴ And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

³⁶ Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

¹³ They were also expelling many evil spirits from people, and they were anointing many sick people with olive oil and healing them.

¹⁴ King Herod Antipas heard about what Jesus was doing, because many people were talking about it. Some people were saying about Jesus, “ He must be John the Baptizer! He has come back to life! That is why he has God's power to perform these miracles!”

¹⁵ Others were saying about Jesus, “He is the former prophet Elijah, whom God promised to send back again.” Others were saying about Jesus, “ No, he is a different prophet, like one of the other prophets who lived long ago.”

¹⁶ Having heard what the people were saying, King Herod Antipas himself repeatedly said, “The man performing those miracles must be John! I commanded my soldiers to cut off his head, but he has come back to life again to get revenge for my killing him!”

¹⁷ The reason King Herod concluded that John wanted revenge is as follows: Some time before this, Herod married Herodias, while she was still the wife of his younger brother, Philip.

¹⁸ John kept telling Herod, “ God's law does not permit you to marry the wife of your brother while he is still alive.” Then, because Herodias urged him to put John in prison, Herod himself sent soldiers to John. They seized John and put him in prison.

¹⁹ But because Herodias wanted to get further revenge on John, she wanted someone to execute him. But she could not do that because while John was in prison, Herod kept John safe from her.

²⁰ Herod did this because he respected/feared John, because he knew that he was a righteous and holy man. The king did not know what he should do, but he liked to listen to him.

²¹ But Herodias was able to have someone execute John when they honored/celebrated the day when Herod was born. On that day, he invited the most important government officials, the most important army leaders, and the most important men in Galilee district in order that they might eat and celebrate with him.

²² While they were eating, Herodias' daughter came into the room and danced, and that pleased King Herod and his guests. So the king said to her, “Ask me for whatever you desire and I will give it to you!”

²³ He said to her, “Whatever you ask, I will give it to you! I will give you up to half of what I own and rule, if you ask for it. May God punish me if I do not do what I have promised!”

²⁴ The girl immediately left the room and went to her mother. She told her what the king had said, and asked her, “What shall I ask for?” Her mother replied, “ Ask the king to give you the head of John the Baptizer!”

²⁵ The girl quickly entered the room again. She went to the king and she requested, “I want you to command someone to cut off the head of John the Baptizer and give it to me at once on a platter, so that my mother can know he is dead!”

²⁶ The king became very distressed when he heard what she asked for, because he knew John was a very righteous man (OR, because he now knew that he should not have made that promise to her). But he could not refuse what she requested because he had promised that he would give her anything she asked for, and because his guests had heard him promise that.

²⁷ So the king at once ordered the man who executes prisoners to go and cut off John's head and bring it to the girl. That man went to the prison and cut off John's head.

²⁸ He put it on a platter, brought it back, and gave it to the girl. The girl took it to her mother.

²⁹ After John's disciples heard what happened, they went to the prison and took John's body and then they buried it in a burial cave.

³⁰ The twelve apostles returned to Jesus from the places to which they had gone. They reported to him what they had done and what they had taught to people.

³¹ He said to them, “Come with me to a place where no people are living, in order that we can be alone and rest a little while!” He said this because many people were continually coming to them and going away again, with the result that Jesus and his disciples did not have time to eat or do anything else.

³² So they went away by themselves in a boat to a place where no people were living.

³³ But many people saw them leaving. They also recognized that they were Jesus and the disciples, and they saw where they were going. So they ran ahead on land from all the nearby towns to the place where Jesus and his disciples were going. They actually arrived there before Jesus and the disciples.

³⁴ As Jesus and his disciples got out of the boat, Jesus saw this large crowd. He felt sorry for them because they were confused, like sheep that do not have a shepherd. So he taught them many things.

³⁵ Late in the afternoon, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a place where no people live and it is very late.

³⁶ So send the people away in order that they may go to the surrounding farms and villages in order that they can buy for themselves something to eat!”

³⁷ But he replied, “ No, you yourselves give them something to eat!” They replied, “◄We could not buy enough bread to feed this crowd, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days!/How could we buy enough bread to feed this mob, even if we had as much money as a man earns by working 200 days?►” RHQ

³⁸ But he replied to them, “How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and find out!” They went and found out and then they told him, “We have only five flat loaves and two cooked fish!”

³⁹ He instructed the disciples to tell all the people to sit down on the green grass.

⁴⁰ So the people sat in groups. There were 50 people in some groups and 100 people in other groups.

⁴¹ Jesus took the five flat loaves and the two fish. He looked up towards heaven and thanked God for them. Then he broke the loaves and fish into pieces and kept giving them to the disciples in order that they would distribute them to the people.

²² When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

²³ He swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John the Baptiser.”

²⁵ She came in immediately with haste to the king and requested, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptiser on a platter.”

²⁶ The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her.

²⁷ Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard and commanded to bring John’s head; and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

²⁹ When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ The apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.

³¹ He said to them, “Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

³² They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

³³ They saw them going, and many recognised him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him.

³⁴ Jesus came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is late in the day.

³⁶ Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat.”

³⁷ But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

³⁸ He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ He took the five loaves and the two fish; and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish amongst them all.

¹³ And they sent out a number of evil spirits, and put oil on a great number who were ill, and made them well.

¹⁴ And king Herod had news of him, because his name was on the lips of all; and he said, John the Baptist has come back from the dead, and for this reason these powers are working in him.

¹⁵ But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, It is a prophet, even like one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But Herod, when he had news of it, said, John, whom I put to death, has come back from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent men out to take John and put him in prison, because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had taken for himself.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is wrong for you to have your brother's wife.

¹⁹ And Herodias was bitter against him, desiring to put him to death; but she was not able;

²⁰ For Herod was in fear of John, being conscious that he was an upright and holy man, and kept him safe. And hearing him, he was much troubled; and he gave ear to him gladly.

²¹ And the chance came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and did a dance, Herod and those who were at table with him were pleased with her; and the king said to the girl, Make a request for anything and I will give it you.

²³ And he took an oath, saying to her, Whatever is your desire I will give it to you, even half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went out and said to her mother, What is my request to be? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And she came in quickly to the king, and said, My desire is that you give me straight away on a plate the head of John the Baptist.

²⁶ And the king was very sad; but because of his oaths, and those who were with him at table, he would not say 'No' to her.

²⁷ And straight away the king sent out one of his armed men, and gave him an order to come back with the head: and he went and took off John's head in prison,

²⁸ And came back with the head on a plate, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when his disciples had news of it, they came and took up his body, and put it in its last resting-place.

³⁰ And the twelve came together to Jesus; and they gave him an account of all the things they had done, and all they had been teaching.

³¹ And he said to them, Come away by yourselves to a quiet place, and take a rest for a time. Because there were a great number coming and going, and they had no time even for food.

³² And they went away in the boat to a waste place by themselves.

³³ And the people saw them going, and a number of them, having knowledge who they were, went running there together on foot from all the towns, and got there before them.

³⁴ And he got out, and saw a great mass of people, and he had pity on them, because they were like sheep without a keeper: and he gave them teaching about a number of things.

³⁵ And at the end of the day, his disciples came to him and said, This place is waste land, and it is late:

³⁶ Send them away, so that they may go into the country and small towns round about, and get some food for themselves.

³⁷ But he said to them in answer, Give them food yourselves. And they said to him, Are we to go and get bread for two hundred pence, and give it to them?

³⁸ And he said to them, How much bread have you? go and see. And when they had seen, they said, Five cakes of bread and two fishes.

³⁹ And he made them all be seated in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they were placed in groups, by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ And he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing over them; and when the cakes were broken, he gave them to the disciples to put before the people; and he made division of the two fishes among them all.

¹³ and they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many infirm, and healed them.

¹⁴ And Herod the king heard of him (for his name had become public), and said, John the baptist is risen from among the dead, and on this account works of power are wrought by him.

¹⁵ And others said, It is Elias; and others said, It is a prophet, as one of the prophets.

¹⁶ But Herod when he heard it said, John whom I beheaded, he it is; he is risen from among the dead.

¹⁷ For the same Herod had sent and seized John, and had bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have the wife of thy brother.

¹⁹ But Herodias kept it in her mind against him, and wished to kill him, and could not:

²⁰ for Herod feared John knowing that he was a just and holy man, and kept him safe; and having heard him, did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ And a holiday being come, when Herod, on his birthday, made a supper to his grandees, and to the chiliarchs, and the chief men of Galilee;

²² and the daughter of the same Herodias having come in, and danced, pleased Herod and those that were with him at table; and the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt and I will give it thee.

²⁴ And she went out, and said to her mother, What should I ask? And she said, The head of John the baptist.

²⁵ And immediately going in with haste to the king, she asked saying, I desire that thou give me directly upon a dish the head of John the baptist.

²⁶ And the king, while made very sorry, on account of the oaths and those lying at table with him would not break his word with her.

²⁷ And immediately the king, having sent one of the guard, ordered his head to be brought. And he went out and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head upon a dish, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And his disciples having heard it, came and took up his body, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ And the apostles are gathered together to Jesus. And they related to him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught.

³¹ And he said to them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest a little. For those coming and those going were many, and they had not leisure even to eat.

³² And they went away apart into a desert place by ship.

³³ And many saw them going, and recognised them, and ran together there on foot, out of all the cities, and got there before them.

³⁴ And on leaving the ship Jesus saw a great crowd, and he was moved with compassion for them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when it was already late in the day, his disciples coming to him say, The place is desert, and it is already late in the day;

³⁶ send them away that they may go into the country and villages around, and buy themselves bread, for they have not anything they can eat.

¹⁶ Which Herod hearing, said: John whom I beheaded, he is risen again from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ Now Herodias laid snares for him: and was desirous to put him to death, and could not.

²⁰ For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and kept him, and when he heard him, did many things: and he heard him willingly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, Herod made a supper for his birthday, for the princes, and tribunes, and chief men of Galilee.

²² And when the daughter of the same Herodias had come in, and had danced, and pleased Herod, and them that were at table with him, the king said to the damsel: Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he swore to her: Whatsoever thou shalt ask I will give thee, though it be the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ Who when she was gone out, said to her mother, What shall I ask? But she said: The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And when she was come in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I will that forthwith thou give me in a dish, the head of John the Baptist.

²⁶ And the king was struck sad. Yet because of his oath, and because of them that were with him at table, he would not displease her:

²⁷ But sending an executioner, he commanded that his head should be brought in a dish.

²⁸ And he beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a dish: and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ Which his disciples hearing came, and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ And the apostles coming together unto Jesus, related to him all things that they had done and taught.

³¹ And he said to them: Come apart into a desert place, and rest a little. For there were many coming and going: and they had not so much as time to eat.

³² And going up into a ship, they went into a desert place apart.

³³ And they saw them going away, and many knew: and they ran flocking thither on foot from all the cities, and were there before them.

³⁴ And Jesus going out saw a great multitude: and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past:

³⁶ Send them away, that going into the next villages and towns, they may buy themselves meat to eat.

³⁷ And he answering said to them: Give you them to eat. And they said to him: Let us go and buy bread for two hundred pence, and we will give them to eat.

³⁸ And he saith to them: How many loaves have you? go and see. And when they knew, they say: Five, and two fishes.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent and laid hold of John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John would say to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias held a grudge against him and was desiring to kill him, but she was not able;

²⁰ for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he was protecting him. And when he heard him, he did many things, and he would hear him gladly.

²¹ And when an opportune day arrived, when Herod for his birthday festivities was putting on a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee,

²² and when Herodias' daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and his dinner guests, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you may want, and I will give it to you.”

²³ He also swore to her, “Whatever you may ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

³³ But the multitudes saw them going, and many recognized Him, and ran together there on foot from all the cities, and preceded them, and they came together to Him.

³⁴ And when He came out, Jesus saw a large crowd, and He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when it grew late, His disciples came to Him and said, “The place is deserted, and already the hour is late.

³⁶ Dismiss them, so that they may go into the surrounding farms and villages and may buy themselves food; for they have nothing to eat.”

³⁸ But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

¹⁸ —John had kept saying to Herod, “It isn't lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ So Herodias nursed a grudge against him and wanted to kill him; but she couldn't,

²⁰ because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a just and holy man. And consulting him he would do many things; indeed, he would hear him with pleasure.

²¹ Then an opportune day came when on his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his courtiers, the military commanders, and the chief men of Galilee.

³¹ Because so many were coming and going that they did not even have leisure to eat, He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile.”

³² So they went away in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.

³³ But many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and arrived before them, and came together to Him.

³⁴ Well upon disembarking Jesus saw a large crowd and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and He began to teach them many things.

⁴¹ And taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to serve the people; He also divided the two fish among them all.

¹³ They drove out many demons, and healed many who were sick by anointing them with oil.

¹⁴ King Herod got to hear about Jesus since he had become well-known. Some said, “This is John the Baptist risen from the dead. That's why he has such miraculous powers.”

¹⁵ Others said, “It's Elijah.” Still others said, “He's a prophet, like one of the prophets of the past.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard about it, he said, “It's John, the one I beheaded! He's come back from the dead!”

¹⁷ For Herod had given orders to arrest and imprison John because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom Herod had married.

¹⁸ John had been saying to Herod, “It's against the law to marry your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ So Herodias had a grudge against John and wanted him killed. But she wasn't able to arrange it

²⁰ because Herod knew John was a holy man who did what was right. Herod protected John and though what John said was very disturbing to him, he was still happy to hear what he had to say.

²¹ Herodias had her opportunity on Herod's birthday. He gave a banquet for the nobles, military officers, and important leaders of Galilee.

²² Herodias' daughter came in and danced for them. Herod and those eating with him were delighted at her performance, so he told the girl,

²³ “Ask me for whatever you like, and I'll give it to you.” He confirmed his promise with an oath, “I'll give you up to half my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptist,” she replied.

²⁵ The girl hurried back in and said to the king, “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a plate.”

²⁶ The king was very upset, but because of the oaths he'd made in front of his guests, he didn't want to refuse her.

²⁷ So he immediately sent an executioner to bring him John's head. After beheading him in the prison,

²⁸ the executioner brought John's head on a plate and gave it to the girl, and the young girl handed it to her mother.

²⁹ When John's disciples heard what had happened they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.

³⁰ The apostles returned and gathered around Jesus. They told him all they had done and what they had taught.

³¹ “Come with me, just yourselves. We'll go to a quiet place, and rest for a while,” Jesus told them, because there was so much coming and going that they didn't even have time to eat.

³² So they went by boat to a quiet place to be alone.

³³ But people saw them leaving and recognized them. So people from all the surrounding towns ran ahead and got there before them.

³⁴ When Jesus got off the boat he saw a huge crowd, and he felt pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them about many things.

³⁵ It was getting late in the day and Jesus' disciples came to him. They told him, “We're miles from anywhere, and it's really late.

³⁶ You should tell the people to go and buy themselves something to eat in the villages and countryside nearby.”

³⁷ But Jesus replied, “You give them something to eat.” “What? We'd need more than six month's pay to buy bread to feed all these people,” the disciples replied.

³⁸ “Well, how much bread do you have?” Jesus asked. “Go and see.” They went and checked, and told him, “Five loaves, and a couple of fish.”

³⁹ Jesus told everyone to sit down in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ They sat in groups of hundreds and fifties.

⁴¹ Then he took the five loaves and the two fish. Looking up to heaven he blessed the food and broke the bread into pieces. Then he handed the bread to the disciples to give to the people, and he divided the fish up between all of them.

¹³ And they cast out many deuils: and they anointed many that were sicke, with oyle, and healed them.

¹⁴ Then King Herod heard of him (for his name was made manifest) and sayd, Iohn Baptist is risen againe from the dead, and therefore great workes are wrought by him.

¹⁵ Other sayd, It is Elias, and some sayd, It is a Prophet, or as one of those Prophets.

¹⁶ So when Herod heard it, he said, It is Iohn whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod him selfe had sent forth, and had taken Iohn, and bound him in prison for Herodias sake, which was his brother Philippes wife, because he had maried her.

¹⁸ For Iohn sayd vnto Herod, It is not lawfull for thee to haue thy brothers wife.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias layd waite against him, and would haue killed him, but she could not:

²⁰ For Herod feared Iohn, knowing that hee was a iust man, and an holy, and reuerenced him, and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ But the time being conuenient, when Herod on his birth day made a banket to his princes and captaines, and chiefe estates of Galile:

²² And the daughter of the same Herodias came in, and daunced, and pleased Herod, and them that sate at table together, the King sayd vnto the mayde, Aske of me what thou wilt, and I will giue it thee.

²³ And he sware vnto her, Whatsoeuer thou shalt aske of me, I will giue it thee, euen vnto the halfe of my kingdome.

²⁴ So she went forth, and said to her mother, What shall I aske? And she said, Iohn Baptists head.

²⁵ Then she came in straightway with haste vnto the King, and asked, saying, I would that thou shouldest giue me euen now in a charger the head of Iohn Baptist.

²⁶ Then the King was very sory: yet for his othes sake, and for their sakes which sate at table with him, he would not refuse her.

²⁷ And immediatly the King sent the hangman, and gaue charge that his head shoulde be brought in. So he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ And brought his head in a charger, and gaue it to the maide, and the maide gaue it to her mother.

²⁹ And when his disciples heard it, they came and tooke vp his body, and put it in a tombe.

³⁰ And the Apostles gathered themselues together to Iesus, and tolde him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

³¹ And he sayd vnto them, Come ye apart into the wildernes, and rest a while: for there were many commers and goers, that they had not leasure to eate.

³² So they went by ship out of the way into a desart place.

³³ But the people sawe them when they departed, and many knewe him, and ran a foote thither out of all cities, and came thither before them, and assembled vnto him.

³⁴ Then Iesus went out, and sawe a great multitude, and had compassion on them, because they were like sheepe which had no shepheard: and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when the day was nowe farre spent, his disciples came vnto him, saying, This is a desart place, and nowe the day is farre passed.

³⁶ Let them depart, that they may goe into the countrey and townes about, and buy them bread: for they haue nothing to eate.

³⁷ But he answered, and said vnto them, Giue yee them to eate. And they said vnto him, Shall we goe, and buy two hundreth peny worth of bread, and giue them to eate?

³⁸ Then he sayde vnto them, Howe many loaues haue ye? goe and looke. And when they knewe it, they sayd, Fiue, and two fishes.

³⁹ So he commanded them to make them all sit downe by companies vpon the greene grasse.

⁴⁰ Then they sate downe by rowes, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And he tooke the fiue loaues, and the two fishes, and looked vp to heauen, and gaue thanks, and brake the loaues, and gaue them to his disciples to set before them, and the two fishes he deuided among them all.

¹⁶ But when Herod heard thereof, he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and a holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee;

²² and when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

²³ And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oaths’ sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.

²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

³¹ And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

³² And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

³³ And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.

³⁴ And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

³⁶ send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.

³⁷ He answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

³⁸ He saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁹ And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass.

⁴⁰ And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

¹³ They were sending away many evil spirits, they put medicine on many sick people, they were asking God, “Will you make this person well.” After that the sick person became well. God made them well.

³⁰ Later Jesus' mob who had been sent out returned to him. They told him they were making people well, they were sending out evil spirits, they were teaching people about God, in that way, in response to Jesus' word.

³¹ At that time very many people came to Jesus. They were crowding him from all sides. They did not let Jesus and his men eat. After that Jesus said to his men, “Just we will go to countryside where there are no people. We will rest for a while.”

³² They climbed into a dinghy, they went to where there were no people.

³³ Many were watching them, they knew about them, and they knew where Jesus was going. They went quickly around the end of the waterhole to the far side on foot, they were ready waiting for him.

³⁴ When Jesus disembarked he saw many ready waiting for him. When he saw them he felt sorry for them. He said to himself, “These people are truly in a bad way, without a boss. They are lost, like sheep without a carer.” For a long he was teaching them about God.

³⁵ It became late afternoon. They were still listening to his word. His men said to him, “It is late afternoon. The towns are far away.

³⁶ Send these people to the towns so they can get food for themselves.”

³⁷ Jesus replied, “You give them food.” His men said to him, “We cannot give them food. We could only get food for those many people with a lot of money. We have only a little money.”

³⁸ In reply he said to them, “How much damper do you have? Look.” After looking they said to him, “Five dampers and two small fish.”

³⁹ He told his men, “Tell the people to sit down.” They told them to sit down on the grass in groups.

⁴⁰ They sat down at his word, here 50 were in a group, over there 100 were in a group. All the others were like that, they were in groups everywhere.

⁴¹ Jesus picked up their dampers, he looked upwards, he said to God, “You are the one who gave us this food. Thank you! You have helped us! You are good.” When he had said that, he broke the dampers into pieces, he gave them to his men, he said to them, “Give them to these people.” He did the same sort of thing with the two fish also.

¹⁴ And king Herod heard of him (for his name was spread abroad), and he said, John the Baptizer hath risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him. But others said, It is Elijah.

³⁰ And the apostles gather together to Jesus, and told him all which they had done and taught.

²¹ A suitable opportunity, however, occurred when Herod, on his birthday, gave a dinner to his high officials, and his generals, and the foremost men in Galilee.

²² When his daughter — that is, the daughter of Herodias — came in and danced, she delighted Herod and those who were dining with him. “Ask me for whatever you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you”;

²³ and he swore to her that he would give her whatever she asked him — up to half his kingdom.

²⁴ The girl went out, and said to her mother “What must I ask for?” “The head of John the Baptiser,” answered her mother.

²⁵ So she went in as quickly as possible to the king, and made her request. “I want you,” she said, “to give me at once, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.”

²⁶ The king was much distressed; yet, because of his oath and of the guests at his table, he did not like to refuse her.

²⁷ He immediately dispatched one of his bodyguard, with orders to bring John's head. The man went and beheaded John in the prison,

²⁸ and, bringing his head on a dish, gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

²⁹ When John's disciples heard of it, they came and took his body away, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ When the apostles came back to Jesus, they told him all that they had done and all that they had taught.

³¹ “Come by yourselves privately to some lonely spot,” he said, “and rest for a while” — for there were so many people coming and going that they had not time even to eat.

³² So they set off privately in their boat for a lonely spot.

³³ Many people saw them going, and recognised them, and from all the towns they flocked together to the place on foot, and got there before them.

³⁴ On getting out of the boat, Jesus saw a great crowd, and his heart was moved at the sight of them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ When it grew late, his disciples came up to him, and said, “This is a lonely spot, and it is already late.

³⁶ Send the people away, so that they may go to the farms and villages around and buy themselves something to eat.”

³⁷ But Jesus answered, “It is for you to give them something to eat.” “Are we to go and spend almost a year's wages on bread,” they asked, “to give them to eat?”

³⁸ “How many loaves have you?” he asked; “Go, and see.” When they had found out, they told him, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ Jesus directed them to make all the people take their seats on the green grass, in parties;

⁴⁰ and they sat down in groups — in hundreds, and in fifties.

¹⁷ For Herod Heroic himself had sent out and arrested John Yah is gracious, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip Loves horses’s wife, for he had married her.

¹⁸ For John Yah is gracious said to Herod Heroic, “It violates the Torah ·Teaching· for you to marry your brother’s wife.”

¹⁹ Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn’t,

²⁰ for Herod Heroic feared John Yah is gracious, knowing that he was a upright and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.

²¹ Then a convenient day came, that Herod Heroic on his birthday made a supper for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee District, Circuit.

²² When the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod Heroic and those sitting with him. The king said to the young lady, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”

²³ He swore to her, “Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out, and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” She said, “The head of John Yah is gracious the Immerser.”

²⁵ She came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, “I want you to give me right now the head of John Yah is gracious the Immerser on a platter.”

²⁶ The king was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn’t wish to refuse her.

²⁷ Immediately the king sent out a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring John Yah is gracious’s head, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.

²⁹ When his disciples heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

³⁰ The apostles gathered themselves together to Yeshua Salvation, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.

³¹ He said to them, “You come apart into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

³² They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

³³ They saw them going, and many recognized him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him.

³⁴ Yeshua Salvation came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him, and said, “This place is deserted, and it is late in the day.

³⁶ Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages, and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat.”

³⁷ But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii (200 days wages) worth of bread, and give them something to eat?”

³⁸ He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

³⁹ He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass.

⁴⁰ They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.

⁴¹ He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all.

¹³ Those men sent a lot of bad spirits out of people. And they put olive oil on a lot of sick people, like medicine for them, and those sick people got better.

¹⁴ This is the story about what happened to John the Baptiser. The big boss called King Herod had a brother called Philip. Philip had a wife called Herodias. Herodias didn’t want to live with Philip any more, so she left him, and married Herod. John kept on telling Herod, “You are breaking God’s law. You shouldn’t have your brother’s wife.” Herodias hated John for saying this and she wanted to kill him, but Herod sent some soldiers to grab John and keep him in jail, so Herodias couldn’t do anything to him. John was a good man and lived God’s way all the time, so Herod was frightened of him. And Herod liked to talk with John, but John’s words confused him and upset him. Some time later Herod had a birthday party, and Herodias got her chance to hurt John. All the leaders of Herod’s army and the government bosses from Galilee country were there at Herod’s party. The daughter of Herodias danced for them at that party. Everybody was really happy with her dancing, so Herod made a strong promise to her, he told her, “I want to give you a really good present. You can ask for anything. I will give you anything you ask for, even as much as half of this country. This is true. I’m not lying.” That young girl went outside and asked her mother, “What will I ask for?” Her mother said, “Go back in and ask the big boss to send a soldier to cut off John the Baptiser’s head, and give it to you as a present.” The girl ran back into the party and said to King Herod, “I want you to give me John the Baptiser’s head on a big plate, and I want it right now.” When Herod heard these words he was really sad. But he didn’t want to break his promise and be ashamed, so he sent a soldier to cut off John’s head and bring it back to the girl on a big plate. The soldier went to the jail and cut off John’s head and brought it back to the party, and he gave it to the young girl, and then she gave it to her mother. John’s friends heard this bad news. They came and got his body, then they took it away and buried it. Later lots of people heard about what Jesus was doing and they talked about him all the time. Some people said, “Jesus is really Elijah, that old man that told God’s message a long time ago. God made him alive again.” Some other people said, “Jesus is a man talking for God, just like those other men that told God’s message a long time ago.” But some people reckoned, “Jesus is really John the Baptiser. God made John alive again and gave him power to do great things.” King Herod heard these stories and said, “I got my soldiers to cut John’s head off, but this man now, he has to be John the Baptiser. I reckon God made him alive again.”

³⁰ Some time later the 12 close followers of Jesus came back from telling his message to all the communities. They stood around Jesus and told him everything they did and what they taught the people in the communities.

³¹ While they were talking, lots of other people were coming up to Jesus all the time, so Jesus and his followers didn’t get a chance to eat any food. Jesus was worried for his followers, so he said to them, “Let’s go to a quiet place out bush so that you can rest for a while.”

³² So Jesus and his followers got into a boat and started to go across the lake to a quiet place away from all the people. But lots of people saw them leave.

³³ They were from a lot of different communities, but they knew the place that Jesus and his close followers were going to. They ran around the side of the lake and got there first, before the boat.

³⁴ Jesus and his close followers came to that place and got out of the boat. Jesus looked at the mob of people waiting for him and he felt sad inside for them. They didn’t have anyone looking after them. They were like a mob of sheep that had no boss to take care of them. So Jesus started to teach them lots of things.

³⁵ At the end of the day, the close followers of Jesus went to him and said, “It’s nearly time for the sun to go down and we are way out here in the bush.

³⁶ You have to send the people away from here so that they can find some food. They can go to a nearby farm or community to buy some food to eat.”

³⁷ Jesus said to them, “You mob give them some food to eat.” But they said, “What? We haven’t got that much food. Do you want us to go and buy a lot of bread for them? That will cost thousands of dollars.”

³⁸ Jesus said to his followers, “How much food have you got? Go and have a look.” They came back to him and said, “We’ve got 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.”

³⁹ Jesus told his followers to get the people to sit on the green grass in groups, maybe about 50 people or about 100 people in each group.

⁴¹ Then Jesus picked up the bread and the fish, looked up to the sky and said, “Thank you God for this bread and fish.” Then Jesus broke up the bread and fish and gave the pieces to his followers to give to the people.

¹³ and they caste out many devylles. And they annoynted many that were sicke with oyle and healed them.

¹⁴ And kynge Herode herde of him (for his name was spreed abroade) and sayd: Iohn Baptiste is rysen agayne from deeth and therfore miracles are wrought by him.

¹⁵ Wother sayd it is Helyas: and some sayde: it is a Prophet or as one of the Prophetes.

¹⁷ For Herode him sylfe, had sent forth and had taken Iohn, and bounde him and cast him into preson for Herodias sake which was his brother Philippes wyfe. For he had maried her.

¹⁸ Iohn sayd vnto Herode: It is not laufull for the to have thy brothers wyfe.

¹⁹ Herodias layd wayte for him and wolde have killed him but she coulde not.

²⁰ For Herode feared Iohn knowynge that he was a iuste man and an holy: and gave him reverence: and when he hearde him he dyd many thinges and hearde him gladly.

²¹ But when a conuenient daye was come: Herode on his birth daye made a supper to the lordes captayns and chefe estates of Galile.

²² And the doughter of the sayde Herodias came in and daused and pleased Herode and them that sate at bourde also. Then the kynge sayd vnto the mayden: axe of me what thou wilt and I will geve it the.

²³ And he sware vnto hyr whatsoever thou shalt axe of me I will geve it the even vnto the one halfe of my kyngdome.

²⁴ And she wet forth and sayde to her mother: what shall I axe? And she sayde: Iohn Baptistes heed.

²⁵ And she cam in streygth waye with haste vnto the kynge and axed sayinge: I will that thou geve me by and by in a charger the heed of Iohn Baptist.

²⁶ And the kynge was sory: howbe it for his othes sake and for their sakes which sate at supper also he wolde not put her besyde her purpose.

²⁷ And immediatly the kynge sent the hangma and commaunded his heed to be brought in. And he went and beheeded him in the preson,

²⁸ and brought his heed in a charger and gave it to the mayden and the mayden gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when his disciples hearde of it they came and toke vp his body and put it in a toumbe.

³⁰ And the apostels gaddered them selves to ggedre to Iesus and tolde him all thinges booth what they had done and what they had taught.

³¹ And he sayd vnto them: come ye aparte into the wyldernes and rest awhyle. For there were many comers and goers that they had no leasure so moche as to eate.

³² And he went by ship out of the waye into a deserte place.

³³ But the people spyed them when they departed: and many knewe him and ranne afote thyther out of all cities and cam thyther before them and came togedder vnto him.

³⁴ And Iesus went out and sawe moche people and had compassion on them because they were lyke shepe which had no shepeherde. And he beganne to teache them many thinges.

³⁵ And when the daye was nowe farre spet his disciples came vnto him sayinge: this is a desert place and now the daye is farre passed

³⁶ let the departe that they maye goo into the countrey rounde about and into the tounes and bye the breed: for they have nothinge to eate.

¹³ They cast out many demons, and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

¹⁴ King Herod heard this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

¹⁵ Some others said, “He is Elijah.” Still others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets in ancient times.”

¹⁶ But when Herod heard this he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”

¹⁷ For Herod sent to have John arrested and he had him bound in prison on account of Herodias (his brother Philip's wife), because he had married her.

¹⁸ For John told Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.”

¹⁹ But Herodias held on to anger against him and wanted to kill him, but she could not,

²⁰ for Herod feared John; he knew that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. Listening to him made him greatly upset, yet he heard him gladly.

²¹ Then the opportunity came when Herod had his birthday and he made a dinner for his officials, and his commanders, and leaders of Galilee.

²² The daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced for them, and she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want and I will give it to you.”

²³ He swore to her saying, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”

²⁴ She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask him for?” She said, “The head of John the Baptist.”

²⁵ She immediately hurried back to the king, and she asked, saying, “I want you to give me, right now, the head of John the Baptist on a wooden platter.”

²⁶ Though this deeply grieved the king, he could not refuse her request because of the oath he had made and because of his dinner guests.

²⁷ So the king sent a soldier from his guard and commanded him to bring him John's head. The guard went and beheaded him in the prison.

²⁸ He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

²⁹ When his disciples heard of this, they came and took his body and placed it in a tomb.

³⁰ The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught.

³¹ Then he said to them, “Come away by yourselves into a deserted place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

³² So they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

³³ But they saw them leaving and many recognized them, and they ran there together on foot from all the towns, and they arrived there before them.

³⁴ When they came ashore, he saw a great crowd and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ When the hour was late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place and the hour is already late.

³⁶ Send them away so that they may go into the nearby countryside and villages to buy something to eat for themselves.”

²⁸ and brought his head in a dish, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when this thing was heard, his disciples came, and took his body, and laid it in a burial.

²⁵ And when she was come in anon (or at once) with haste to the king, she asked, and said, I will that anon, (or I desire, or I want, at once), (that) thou give to me in a dish the head of John (the) Baptist.

²⁶ And the king was sorry for the oath, and for (the) men that sat together at the meat, he would not make her sorry or heavy; (And the king was sorry for the promise that he had made, or for the oath that he had taken, but because of the men who sat there with him at the meal, he would not make her grieved or disappointed;)

²⁷ but he sent a man-queller and commanded, that John’s head were brought in a dish. And (so) he beheaded him in the prison,

²⁸ and brought his head in a dish, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother.

²⁹ And when this thing was heard, his disciples came, and took his body, and laid it in a burial, (or and laid it in a tomb, or in a grave).

³⁰ And the apostles came together to Jesus, and told to him all (the) things, that they had done, and taught.

³¹ And he said to them, Come ye by yourselves into a desert place; and rest ye a little. For there were many that came, and went again, and they had not space for to eat (or and they had no time even to eat).

³² And they went into a boat, and went into a desert place by themselves.

³³ And they saw them go away (or And the people saw them go away), and many knew, and they went afoot from all (the) cities, and ran together thither, and came before them.

³⁴ And Jesus went out, and saw much people, and had ruth or mercy on them, (or and had compassion for them), for they were as sheep not having a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.

³⁵ And when it was late in the day, his disciples came to him, and said, This is a desert place, and the time is now passed;

³⁶ let them go into the next towns and villages, to buy them(selves) meat to eat (or to buy themselves some food to eat).

³⁷ And he answered, and said to them, Give ye (something) to them for to eat. And they said to him, Go we, and buy we loaves with two hundred pence, and (then) we shall give (something) to them for to eat.

³⁸ And he saith to them, How many loaves have ye? Go ye, and see. And when they had known, they say, Five, and two fishes.

³⁹ And he commanded to them, that they should make all men sit to meat by companies (or that they should make everyone to sit down for the meal in groups), on the green hay.

⁴⁰ And they sat down by parts or (in) parties, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And when he had taken the five loaves, and two fishes, he beheld into heaven, and blessed (or and gave thanks), and brake the loaves, and gave (them) to his disciples, (so) that they should set (them) before them. And he parted (the) two fishes to all (or And he divided the two fish among all the people);

¹³ And thei castiden out many feendis, and anoyntiden with oyle many sijk men, and thei weren heelid.

¹⁴ And kyng Eroude herde, for his name was maad opyn, and seide, That Joon Baptist hath risen ayen fro deeth, and therfor vertues worchen in hym.

¹⁵ Othir seiden, That it is Helie; but othir seiden, That it is a profete, as oon of profetis.

¹⁶ And whanne this thing was herd, Eroude seide, This Joon, whom Y haue biheedide, is risun ayen fro deeth.

¹⁷ For thilke Eroude sente, and helde Joon, and boond hym in to prisoun, for Erodias, the wijf of Filip, his brothir; for he hadde weddid hir.

¹⁸ For Joon seide to Eroude, It is not leueful to thee, to haue the wijf of thi brothir.

¹⁹ And Erodias leide aspies to hym, and wolde sle hym, and myyte not.

²⁰ And Eroude dredde Joon, and knewe hym a iust man and hooli, and kepte hym. And Eroude herde hym, and he dide many thingis, and gladli herde hym.

²¹ And whanne a couenable dai was fallun, Eroude in his birthdai made a soper to the princis, and tribunes, and to the grettest of Galilee.

²² And whanne the douyter of thilke Erodias was comun ynne, and daunside, and pleside to Eroude, and also to men that saten at the mete, the kyng seide to the damysel, Axe thou of me what thou wolt, and Y schal yyue to thee.

²³ And he swore to hir, That what euer thou axe, Y schal yyue to thee, thouy it be half my kyngdom.

²⁴ And whanne sche hadde goon out, sche seide to hir modir, What schal Y axe? And sche seide, The heed of Joon Baptist.

²⁵ And whanne sche was comun ynne anoon with haast to the kyng, sche axide, and seide, Y wole that anoon thou yyue to me in a dische the heed of Joon Baptist.

²⁶ And the kyng was sori for the ooth, and for men that saten togidere at the meete he wolde not make hir sori;

²⁷ but sente a manqueller and comaundide, that Joones heed were brouyt in a dissche. And he bihedide hym in the prisoun,

²⁸ and brouyte his heed in a disch, and yaf it to the damysel, and the damysel yaf to hir modir.

²⁹ And whanne this thing was herd, hise disciplis camen, and token his bodi, and leiden it in a biriel.

³⁰ And the apostlis camen togidere to Jhesu, and telden to hym alle thingis, that thei hadden don, and tauyt.

³¹ And he seide to hem, Come ye bi you silf in to a desert place; and reste ye a litil. For there were many that camen, and wenten ayen, and thei hadden not space to ete.

³² And thei yeden in to a boot, and wenten in to a desert place bi hem silf.

³³ And thei sayn hem go awei, and many knewen, and thei wenten afoote fro alle citees, and runnen thidur, and camen bifor hem.

³⁴ And Jhesus yede out, and saiy myche puple, and hadde reuth on hem, for thei weren as scheep not hauynge a scheepherd. And he bigan to teche hem many thingis.

³⁵ And whanne it was forth daies, hise disciplis camen, and seiden, This is a desert place, and the tyme is now passid;

³⁶ lete hem go in to the nexte townes and villagis, to bie hem meete to ete.

³⁷ And he answeride, and seide to hem, Yyue ye to hem to ete. And thei seiden to hym, Go we, and bie we looues with two hundrid pens, and we schulen yyue to hem to ete.

³⁸ And he seith to hem, Hou many looues han ye? Go ye, and se. And whanne thei hadden knowe, thei seien, Fyue, and two fischis.

³⁹ And he comaundide to hem, that thei schulden make alle men sitte to mete bi cumpanyes, on greene heye.

⁴⁰ And thei saten doun bi parties, bi hundridis, and bi fifties.

⁴¹ And whanne he hadde take the fyue looues, and twei fischis, he biheelde in to heuene, and blesside, and brak looues, and yaf to hise disciplis, that thei schulden sette bifor hem. And he departide twei fischis to alle;

¹³ and many demons they were casting out, and they were anointing with oil many infirm, and they were healing them.

¹⁴ And the king Herod heard, (for his name became public,) and he said — 'John the Baptist out of the dead was raised, and because of this the mighty powers are working in him.'

¹⁵ Others said — 'It is Elijah,' and others said — 'It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.'

¹⁶ And Herod having heard, said — 'He whom I did behead — John — this is he; he was raised out of the dead.'

¹⁷ For Herod himself, having sent forth, did lay hold on John, and bound him in the prison, because of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he married her,

¹⁸ for John said to Herod — 'It is not lawful to thee to have the wife of thy brother;'

¹⁹ and Herodias was having a quarrel with him, and was willing to kill him, and was not able,

²⁰ for Herod was fearing John, knowing him a man righteous and holy, and was keeping watch over him, and having heard him, was doing many things, and hearing him gladly.

²¹ And a seasonable day having come, when Herod on his birthday was making a supper to his great men, and to the chiefs of thousands, and to the first men of Galilee,

²² and the daughter of that Herodias having come in, and having danced, and having pleased Herod and those reclining (at meat) with him, the king said to the damsel, 'Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give to thee,'

²³ and he sware to her — 'Whatever thou mayest ask me, I will give to thee — unto the half of my kingdom.'

²⁴ And she, having gone forth, said to her mother, 'What shall I ask for myself?' and she said, 'The head of John the Baptist;'

²⁵ and having come in immediately with haste unto the king, she asked, saying, 'I will that thou mayest give me presently, upon a plate, the head of John the Baptist.'

²⁶ And the king — made very sorrowful — because of the oaths and of those reclining (at meat) with him, would not put her away,

²⁷ and immediately the king having sent a guardsman, did command his head to be brought,

²⁸ and he having gone, beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head upon a plate, and did give it to the damsel, and the damsel did give it to her mother;

²⁹ and having heard, his disciples came and took up his corpse, and laid it in the tomb.

³⁰ And the apostles are gathered together unto Jesus, and they told him all, and how many things they did, and how many things they taught,

³¹ and he said to them, 'Come ye yourselves apart to a desert place, and rest a little,' for those coming and those going were many, and not even to eat had they opportunity,

³² and they went away to a desert place, in the boat, by themselves.

³³ And the multitudes saw them going away, and many recognised him, and by land from all the cities they ran thither, and went before them, and came together to him,

³⁴ and having come forth, Jesus saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion on them, that they were as sheep not having a shepherd, and he began to teach many things.

³⁵ And now the hour being advanced, his disciples having come near to him, say, — 'The place is desolate, and the hour is now advanced,

³⁶ let them away, that, having gone away to the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy to themselves loaves, for what they may eat they have not.'

³⁷ And he answering said to them, 'Give ye them to eat,' and they say to him, 'Having gone away, may we buy two hundred denaries' worth of loaves, and give to them to eat?'

³⁸ And he saith to them, 'How many loaves have ye? go and see;' and having known, they say, 'Five, and two fishes.'

³⁹ And he commanded them to make all recline in companies upon the green grass,

⁴⁰ and they sat down in squares, by hundreds, and by fifties.

⁴¹ And having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves, and was giving to his disciples, that they may set before them, and the two fishes divided he to all,
