Mark 4:21-40 in American Standard Version (1901)

21 And he said unto them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel, or under the bed, and not to be put on the stand?
22 For there is nothing hid, save that it should be manifested; neither was anything made secret, but that it should come to light.
23 If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete it shall be measured unto you; and more shall be given unto you.
25 For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath.
26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed upon the earth;
27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how.
28 The earth beareth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is ripe, straightway he putteth forth the sickle, because the harvest is come.
30 And he said, How shall we liken the kingdom of God? or in what parable shall we set it forth?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown upon the earth, though it be less than all the seeds that are upon the earth,
32 yet when it is sown, groweth up, and becometh greater than all the herbs, and putteth out great branches; so that the birds of the heaven can lodge under the shadow thereof.
33 And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it;
34 and without a parable spake he not unto them: but privately to his own disciples he expounded all things.
35 And on that day, when even was come, he saith unto them, Let us go over unto the other side.
36 And leaving the multitude, they take him with them, even as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him.
37 And there ariseth a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the boat, insomuch that the boat was now filling.
38 And he himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion: and they awake him, and say unto him, Teacher, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye fearful? have ye not yet faith?

Mark 4:21-40 in Translation for Translators

21 He also told them another parable, saying, “◄People certainly do not light an oil lamp and then bring it in the house in order that it may be put {someone may put it} under a container or under a bed./Would anyone light an oil lamp and then bring it in the house in order that it may be put {someone may put it} under a container or under a bed?► RHQ ◄No, they light it in order that it may be put {someone may put it} in a place where it lights the house. /Wouldn't they light it in order that it may be put {someone may put it} in a place where it lights the house?► RHQ
22 Similarly, there are some parts of God's message that people do not know. But he intends that people will understand all the things that they do not know now.
23 If you want to understand this, you should consider carefully what you have just heard.”
24 Then he said to them, “Consider carefully what you hear me say to you, for God will let you understand to the same degree that you consider what I say. He will let you understand even more than that.
25 Those who consider what I say and understand it, God will enable them to understand more. But those who do not consider carefully what I say, they will forget even what they already know.”
26 Jesus also said, “God has the power to change people who let him rule their lives. I will illustrate how that can happen MET. A man planted seeds in the ground.
27 Afterwards he slept each night and rose each day without worrying about the seeds. During that time the seeds sprouted and grew in a way that he did not understand, because by itself the soil caused the plants to grow and produce grain.
28 First the stalks appeared. Then the heads appeared. Then the full kernels in the heads appeared.
29 As soon as the grain was ripe he sent people MTY to harvest it because it was time to harvest the grain.”
30 Jesus told them another parable. He said, “I will tell you RHQ how the number of people whose lives God rules in a new way will continue to grow (OR, each continue to have more and more influence in this world). I hope RHQ that this illustration will show this to you.
31 You know what happens to mustard seeds when we plant them. Though mustard seeds are among the smallest of seeds, here in Israel they become large plants.
32 After they are planted, they grow up and become larger than the other garden plants. They put out big branches so that birds are able to make nests in their shade.”
33 Jesus used many such illustrations when he talked to the people about God. If they were able to understand some, he kept telling them more.
34 He always used parables when he spoke to them. But he explained all the illustrations to his own disciples when he was alone with them.
35 On that same day, when the sun was setting, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let's cross over to the opposite side of Lake Galilee in the boat.”
36 So they left the crowd, got in the boat where Jesus already was, and left. Other people went with them in other boats.
37 A strong wind came up and the waves started coming into the boat! The boat was soon nearly full of water!
38 Jesus was in the back part of the boat. He was sleeping, with his head on a cushion. So they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher! ◄You ought to be concerned that we are about to die!/Are you not concerned that we are about to die?► RHQ”
39 So Jesus got up and rebuked the wind. Then he said to the lake, “Be quiet! Be still! DOU” The wind immediately stopped blowing and then the lake became very calm.
40 He said to the disciples, “◄ I am disappointed that you are afraid like that!/Why are you afraid like that?► RHQ Do you not yet believe that I can protect you?”

Mark 4:21-40 in Bible in Basic English

21 And he said to them, When the light comes in, do people put it under a vessel, or under the bed, and not on its table?
22 There is nothing covered which will not be seen openly, and nothing has been made secret which will not come to light.
23 If any man has ears, let him give ear.
24 And he said to them, Take care what you give ear to: in the same measure as you give you will get, and more will be given to you.
25 He who has, to him will be given: and he who has not, from him will be taken even that which he has.
26 And he said, Such is the kingdom of God, as if a man put seed in the earth,
27 And went to sleep and got up, night and day, and the seed came to growth, though he had no idea how.
28 The earth gives fruit by herself; first the leaf, then the head, then the full grain.
29 But when the grain is ready, he quickly sends men to get it cut, because the time for cutting has come.
30 And he said, What picture may we give of the kingdom of God, or with what story may we make it clear?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is put in the earth, is smaller than all the seeds on the earth,
32 But when it is planted, it comes up, and becomes taller than all the plants, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of heaven are able to take rest in its shade.
33 And with a number of such stories he gave them his teaching, as they were able to take it:
34 And without a story he said nothing to them: but privately to his disciples he made all things clear.
35 And on that day, when the evening had come, he said to them, Let us go over to the other side.
36 And going away from the people, they took him with them, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him.
37 And a great storm of wind came up, and the waves came into the boat, so that the boat was now becoming full.
38 And he himself was in the back of the boat, sleeping on the cushion: and they, awaking him, said, Master, is it nothing to you that we are in danger of destruction?
39 And he came out of his sleep, and gave strong orders to the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be at rest. And the wind went down, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said to them, Why are you full of fear? have you still no faith?

Mark 4:21-40 in Darby Translation

21 And he said to them, Does the lamp come that it should be put under the bushel or under the couch? Is it not that it should be set upon the lamp-stand?
22 For there is nothing hidden which shall not be made manifest; nor does any secret thing take place, but that it should come to light.
23 If any one have ears to hear, let him hear.
24 And he said to them, Take heed what ye hear; with what measure ye mete, it shall be meted to you; and there shall be more added to you.
25 For whosoever has, to him shall be given; and he who has not, even what he has shall be taken from him.
26 And he said, Thus is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast the seed upon the earth,
27 and should sleep and rise up night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he does not know how.
28 The earth bears fruit of itself, first the blade, then an ear, then full corn in the ear.
29 But when the fruit is produced, immediately he sends the sickle, for the harvest is come.
30 And he said, How should we liken the kingdom of God, or with what comparison should we compare it?
31 As to a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown upon the earth, is less than all seeds which are upon the earth,
32 and when it has been sown, mounts up and becomes greater than all herbs, and produces great branches, so that the birds of heaven can roost under its shadow.
33 And with many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear,
34 but without a parable spoke he not to them; and in private he explained all things to his disciples.
35 And on that day, when evening was come, he says to them, Let us go over to the other side:
36 and having sent away the crowd, they take him with them, as he was, in the ship. But other ships also were with him.
37 And there comes a violent gust of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it already filled.
38 And he was in the stern sleeping on the cushion. And they awake him up and say to him, Teacher, dost thou not care that we are perishing?
39 And awaking up he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Silence; be mute. And the wind fell, and there was a great calm.

26 And he said: So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the earth,

28 For the earth of itself bringeth forth fruit, first the blade, then the ear, afterwards the full corn in the ear.

33 And with many such parables, he spoke to them the word, according as they were able to hear.
34 And without parable he did not speak unto them; but apart, he explained all things to his disciples.
35 And he saith to them that day, when evening was come: Let us pass over to the other side.

39 And rising up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: Peace, be still. And the wind ceased: and there was made a great calm.
40 And he said to them: Why are you fearful? have you not faith yet? And they feared exceedingly: and they said one to another: Who is this (thinkest thou) that both wind and sea obey him?

Mark 4:21-40 in English Majority Text Version

21 And He said to them, “A lamp is not brought so that it may be put under a measuring basket or under a bed, is it? Is it not brought so that it may be put on a lampstand?
22 For there is nothing hidden which shall not be made manifest, nor was it hidden but that it might come to light.
23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”
24 Then He said to them, “Watch what you hear. By what measure you measure, it will be measured out to you; and more will be added to you who hear.
25 For whoever has, more will be given to him; and he who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
26 And He said, “Thus is the kingdom of God as if a man should cast seed on the ground,
27 and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and should grow, he himself does not know how.
28 For the earth produces crops by itself: first a shoot, then a head of grain, then full wheat in the head of grain.
29 But whenever the crop permits, immediately he sends forth the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
30 Then He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God? Or by what sort of parable shall we illustrate it?
31 It is like a mustard seed, which whenever it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on the earth;
32 but whenever it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all the garden vegetables, and produces great branches, so that the birds of heaven are able to nest under its shade.”
33 And by many such parables He would speak the word to them, just as they were able to hear it.
34 And apart from a parable He did not speak to them, however, privately to His disciples, he would explain all things.
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
36 And leaving the crowd, they took Him along as He was in the boat. And other little boats were also with Him.
37 And there was a severe windstorm, and the waves dashed up into the boat, so that it was already filling up.
38 But He was in the stern, sleeping upon the cushion. And they woke Him up and said to Him, “Teacher! Does it not matter to You that we are perishing?”
39 And having awakened He rebuked the wind, and He said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” And the wind abated and there was a great calm.
40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you do not have faith?”

Mark 4:21-40 in The New Testament with Commentary

21 Also He said to them: “The lamp is not brought to be put under a box or under a bed, is it? Is it not to be placed on its stand?
22 For there is no ‘hidden’ that may not be exposed, nor has anything been concealed but that it should come to light.
23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
24 Then He said to them: “Pay attention to what you hear. With the same measure you use it will be measured to you in return; and to you who hear, more will be added.
25 Because whoever has, to him more will be given; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
26 He also said: “The Kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter the seed on the ground
27 and should sleep and get up night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.
28 All by itself the earth produces fruit: first a shoot, then a head of grain, then full grain in the head.
29 But as soon as the grain is ready, he sends in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
30 Again He said: “To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God, or with what sort of parable should we illustrate it?
31 It is like a mustard seed, that when it is sown on the ground is the smallest of all such seeds,
32 yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden herbs and produces big branches, so that the birds of the air are able to rest in its shade.”
33 It was with many such parables that He was speaking the word to them, as they were able to hear it.
34 But apart from a parable He did not speak to them; privately, however, He would explain everything to His disciples.
35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
36 Since He was already in the boat, they took off with Him, leaving the crowd behind (other little boats were also with Him).
37 Well a strong cyclonic wind came up, such that the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling up.
38 But He was on the poop deck, sleeping on the cushion; so they awakened Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don't you care that we are perishing?”
39 Then, having been awakened, He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Shut up; be muzzled!” So the wind stopped and there was a complete calm.
40 And He said to them: “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”

Mark 4:21-40 in Free Bible Version

21 Who puts a lamp under a bucket, or beneath a bed?” Jesus asked them. “No, you put a lamp up on a lamp-stand.
22 Everything that is hidden will be revealed, and everything that is secret will be brought out into the open.
23 If you have ears to hear, listen to what I'm saying!
24 Pay attention to what you're hearing,” he told them, “for you will be given according to how much you want to receive, measure for measure.
25 More will be given to those who already have understanding, but those who don't want to know will have what little understanding they have taken from them.
26 God's kingdom is like a man sowing seed in the ground,” Jesus said.
27 “He goes to bed and gets up, day after day, but the man has no knowledge of how the seeds sprout and grow.
28 The earth produces a harvest by itself. First a shoot appears, then the heads of grain, and then the heads of grain ripen.
29 When the grain is ripe, the farmer reaps it with a sickle, because the harvest is ready.
30 What can we compare God's kingdom to? What illustration shall we use?” he asked.
31 “It's like a mustard seed, the tiniest seed of all.
32 But when it's sown it grows into a plant that's larger than other plants. It has branches big enough that birds can roost in its shade.”
33 Jesus used many of these illustrated stories when he spoke to the people so they would understand as much as they could.
34 In fact, when he spoke publicly, he only used stories; however in private he explained everything to his disciples.
35 Later that day, in the evening, he said to his disciples, “Let's go across to the other side of the Sea.”
36 Leaving the crowd behind, the disciples went with Jesus and got into a boat. Other boats went with them.
37 Soon a terrible storm started blowing, and waves crashed against the boat, filling it with water.
38 Jesus was asleep in the stern, resting his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting at him, “Teacher, don't you care that we're about to drown?”
39 Jesus woke up. He told the wind to die down and told the waves, “Be quiet! Be still.” The wind stopped, and the water became completely calm.
40 “Why are you so frightened? Haven't you learned to trust me?” he asked them.

35 At sunset Jesus said to his men “We will go eastwards to the other side of the water.”
36 Therefore they left the rest of the people on the land, they took Jesus on the water in a dinghy. Other dinghys also followed them.
37 As they were going Jesus was aleep at the back, on a blanket, on a pillow, he was sound asleep. After that partway along a really big wind came up, the water became waves, it was entering the dinghy, the water was filling it. Jesus' men became very afraid. They woke him up. They said to him, “Teacher! Truly the water will drown us all. Soon we will die. Save us! Why did you forget us?
39 Jesus got up from sleep, he said told them, “Wind abate! Water go down!” At his word the wind abated right then, the water went down in the same way, it became calm.
40 Jesus asked his men, “Why were you afraid? Why didn't you believe in me?”

Mark 4:21-40 in Plain English Version

21 Then Jesus said, “When somebody lights a candle they don’t put it under a bowl, do they? And they don’t put that candle under their bed, do they? No way. People hang lights up high, so everyone can see clearly.
22 It’s like this. There are some things you don’t know about yet, but some time later God will tell about them. And there are some things that are secret now, but some time later God will let you know what they are all about.
23 You’ve all got ears, so you have to listen to me properly, and take notice of my words.”
24 Then Jesus said, “Make sure you listen to me properly and think about what I say. When you really take notice of my message, God will help you understand it, and he will help you to know more and more of his word. But if you don’t want to listen to my message, God will stop you from understanding anything you do hear.”
26 Jesus kept on teaching, and said, “I want you to know the way God’s family grows. This is another picture story. A man wanted to grow some seed food, so he threw some seeds on the ground. The seeds fell on the ground and after that the man walked away and left the seeds there. Those seeds grew all by themselves and that man didn’t know what made those seeds grow. He just left them there for many days and they grew. God made those seeds grow in the ground. At first the long stick part grew, and after that the head part grew with all the seeds inside it. At the right time God made the seeds get hard, ready for people to cut down those plants and pick up the seed food. God is boss for everyone and his family will grow just like the seeds in that story.”
30 Jesus talked some more. He said, “Do you know what God’s family is like? I will tell you another picture story to help you understand it.
31 God’s family is like a really little seed. You know that gum tree? Its seeds are very small.
32 When one of those small seeds falls into the ground it grows and grows. Later it gets really big with lots of branches, and birds can sit down in the shade on those branches, and they can make their nests there. Well, God’s family will grow like that.”
33 Jesus taught the people this way whenever they were ready to listen.
34 He only used picture stories when he talked to all the people. But later, when Jesus was sitting down with only his followers, he told them what the stories really mean.
35 On that same day, while Jesus was teaching, the sun started to go down. He was still sitting in the boat, so he stopped teaching and told his followers to take him across the lake.
36 So they left all the other people behind and his followers started to take him across the lake in their boat. Some other people got into their boats and followed them.
37 A little bit later a really strong storm came up. The wind was very strong, and the waves started to fill the boat with water. It was ready to sink.
38 Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow. His followers were frightened, so they woke him up and they shouted at him, “Hey, Teacher, we will all drown. And you don’t care. Why don’t you do something?”
39 Jesus opened his eyes, stood up and growled at the wind and told that water, “Stop. Be quiet.” Straight away the wind stopped and the water lay down flat. Everything was quiet and still.
40 Jesus then said to his followers, “Why are you so frightened?”

Mark 4:21-40 in Young's Literal Translation

21 And he said to them, 'Doth the lamp come that under the measure it may be put, or under the couch — not that it may be put on the lamp-stand?
22 for there is not anything hid that may not be manifested, nor was anything kept hid but that it may come to light.
23 If any hath ears to hear — let him hear.'
24 And he said to them, 'Take heed what ye hear; in what measure ye measure, it shall be measured to you; and to you who hear it shall be added;
25 for whoever may have, there shall be given to him, and whoever hath not, also that which he hath shall be taken from him.'
26 And he said, 'Thus is the reign of God: as if a man may cast the seed on the earth,
27 and may sleep, and may rise night and day, and the seed spring up and grow, he hath not known how;
28 for of itself doth the earth bear fruit, first a blade, afterwards an ear, afterwards full corn in the ear;
29 and whenever the fruit may yield itself, immediately he doth send forth the sickle, because the harvest hath come.'
30 And he said, 'To what may we liken the reign of God, or in what simile may we compare it?
31 As a grain of mustard, which, whenever it may be sown on the earth, is less than any of the seeds that are on the earth;
32 and whenever it may be sown, it cometh up, and doth become greater than any of the herbs, and doth make great branches, so that under its shade the fowls of the heaven are able to rest.'
33 And with many such similes he was speaking to them the word, as they were able to hear,
34 and without a simile he was not speaking to them, and by themselves, to his disciples he was expounding all.
35 And he saith to them on that day, evening having come, 'We may pass over to the other side;'
36 and having let away the multitude, they take him up as he was in the boat, and other little boats also were with him.
37 And there cometh a great storm of wind, and the waves were beating on the boat, so that it is now being filled,
38 and he himself was upon the stern, upon the pillow sleeping, and they wake him up, and say to him, 'Teacher, art thou not caring that we perish?'
39 And having waked up, he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Peace, be stilled;' and the wind did lull, and there was a great calm:
40 and he said to them, 'Why are ye so fearful? how have ye not faith?'
