¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

² Even as it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way;

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight;

⁴ John came, who baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins.

⁵ And there went out unto him all the country of Judæa, and all they of Jerusalem; and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁶ And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leathern girdle about his loins, and did eat locusts and wild honey.

⁷ And he preached, saying, There cometh after me he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

⁸ I baptized you in water; but he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit.

¹ ◄ This is/I want to tell you► the good message about Jesus Christ, the Son of God (OR, the man who was also God). What I want to tell you begins just like the prophet Isaiah said it would begin, when he wrote these words that God said to Jesus: Listen! I am sending my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare people for your coming.

³ He will call out to people who pass by where he is in the desolate area, “As people improve and straighten out pathways before an important official arrives MET, make yourselves ready DOU in order that you will be prepared when the Lord comes.”

⁴ The messenger that Isaiah predicted was John. People called him ❛The Baptizer❜. In the desolate area near the Jordan River he kept telling people, “If you want God to forgive you for having sinned, you must turn away from your sinful behavior before you ask me to baptize you.”

⁵ A great number HYP of people who lived in Jerusalem city and elsewhere in the Judea district were going out to where John was. There, after hearing John's message, they responded by confessing the sinful things that they had done. Then they were being baptized by John {John was baptizing them} in the Jordan River.

⁶ John wore rough clothes made of camel's hair. And as the prophet Elijah had done, he wore a leather belt around his waist; and what he ate was only grasshoppers and honey that he found in that desolate area.

⁷ He was preaching, “Very shortly a man will come who is very great. I am nothing compared to him. Because he is so superior to me, I am not even worthy to serve him like a slave by stooping down and untying his sandals.

⁸ I used only water when I baptized you because you said that you wanted to change your lives, but he will put his Holy Spirit within you to truly change your lives.”

⁹ During that time when John was preaching, Jesus came from Nazareth town, which is in Galilee district. He went to where John was preaching and he was baptized by John {John baptized him} in the Jordan River.

⁵ And there went out to him all the people of Judaea, and all those of Jerusalem, and they were given baptism by him in the river Jordan, saying that they were sinners.

⁶ And John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather band about him; and his food was locusts and honey.

⁷ And he said to them all, There is one coming after me who is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to undo.

⁸ I have given you baptism with water, but he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit.

⁹ And it came about in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was given baptism by John in the Jordan.

⁷ And he was preaching, saying, “There comes One after me who is stronger than me, of whom I am not worthy to stoop down and to loose the strap of His sandal.

⁸ I baptized you in water, but He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”

⁹ It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

² As it is written in the prophets —“Take note, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.”

³ “A voice calling out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight!’ ”—

⁴ John started baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.

⁵ Well, the whole Judean countryside and the Jerusalemites started going out to him, and were all being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

⁶ Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist; and he was eating locusts and wild honey.

⁷ And he was proclaiming: “After me my Superior is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.

⁸ I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with Holy Spirit.”

⁹ Well it happened in those days that Jesus came from Natsareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

¹ Here is the beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

² Just as the prophet Isaiah wrote, “I'm sending my messenger ahead of you to prepare your way.

³ A voice is calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the Lord's way! Make his paths straight.’”

⁴ John came, baptizing in the desert, announcing a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

⁵ Everybody from the country of Judea and from Jerusalem went to him. They admitted their sins publicly and were baptized in the Jordan River.

⁶ John wore clothes made of camel hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey.

⁷ This is what he had to say: “After me someone is coming who is greater than I am. I'm not worthy to bend down and untie his sandals.

⁸ I baptized you in water but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.”

⁹ Then Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River.

⁶ Nowe Iohn was clothed with camels heare, and with a girdle of a skinne about his loynes: and he did eate Locusts and wilde hony,

⁷ And preached, saying, A stronger then I commeth after me, whose shoes latchet I am not worthy to stoupe downe, and vnloose.

⁸ Trueth it is, I haue baptized you with water: but he will baptize you with the holy Ghost.

⁹ And it came to passe in those dayes, that Iesus came from Nazareth, a citie of Galile, and was baptized of Iohn in Iordan.

¹ This word is good, I am teaching you about Jesus. He is God's own child.

² Long ago God spoke to a man, his name was Isaiah. God told him, “I will send a boss to people. I will send another one ahead of that boss with a word for them. That first man will be in the desert. He will tell them, 'Our boss will come. Fix up a straight road for him.'” In that way God spoke to Isaiah. That man Isaiah wrote that word for them on paper.

⁴ After a very long time that man now came. His name was John.

⁶ His poor sort of clothes were made from camel hair. He tied his waist with a leather belt. He used to eat food from the desert, grasshoppers and honey. Very many people were coming to John to listen to him. They were coming to him from the country Judea, and from the big town Jerusalem also. He was telling them, “You have been ignoring God. Be ashamed. You have been doing bad things. Stop it! Come close, come to God! Then God will not look at you with anger, he will become pleased with you. After that I will baptise you.” In that sort of way John was talking to them. After hearing John's words one by one they were saying to God, “Truly I have been ignoring you. I am ashamed of myself. I want to return to you.” In that sort of way they were talking to God. After that John baptised them in the river, in Jordan.

⁷ John was saying to them, “About now another man will come. He is a really big boss. Not like me, I am really unimportant, a scrap. This other one is an important boss. I truly should not touch his shoes.

⁸ I only baptised you in water. This other one will send to you God's Spirit.” In that way John was talking to them.

⁹ After that Jesus came to John from the town of Nazareth, in the country of Galilee. At that time John baptised Jesus in that river Jordan.

¹ This story is good news. It is all about Jesus Christ, God’s son. The story starts like this,

² A long time before Jesus was born, God told a man called Isaiah to write about the things God was going to do for Jesus some time later. Isaiah wrote, “God will send a man to get everything ready for him. That man will talk about him, and will make a way for people to listen to him. That man will be out in the bush, and he will call out to people, and he will say, ‘You mob get ready. God is coming to this country so you have to get ready for him. It is like when a big boss comes, and you have to make a good road for him.’”

⁴ Isaiah was talking about a man called John. God sent him to get things ready for Jesus, so he started to tell people God’s message. He lived out in the bush and wore rough clothes made out of camel’s hair, and a leather belt. He ate grasshoppers and bush honey. John talked to people out there in the bush. He said, “You mob have to be really sorry for the wrong way you are living. You have to turn right around and live God’s way.” He also told them, “If you do that I will take you through a special washing ceremony, I will baptise you.” A lot of people went out into the bush to listen to John. They came from the big town called Jerusalem and from other towns in that country, called Judea. Some people told John that they were sorry for the wrong things they did, so he baptised them in the Jordan River.

⁷ John told them, “A man will come to this country later. He is more important than me, and he is stronger than me. I’m not good enough to untie his shoes.

⁸ I’m just nothing. You see, I cleaned you on the outside with water but this new man will clean you properly with God’s power. He will clean you on the inside with The Holy Spirit.”

⁹ At that time Jesus was living in a small community called Nazareth, in Galilee country. Then Jesus left his home and walked all the way south to a place on the Jordan River. John was baptising people there.

¹ The beginning of the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

² As it is written in the prophets, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you:

³ the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord! Make his paths straight!’”

⁴ John came baptising in the wilderness and preaching the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.

⁵ All the country of Judea and all those of Jerusalem went out to him. They were baptised by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.

⁶ John was clothed with camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey.

⁷ He preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.

⁸ I baptised you in water, but he will baptise you in the Holy Spirit.”

⁹ In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptised by John in the Jordan.

⁷ and preached, and said, A stronger than I shall come after me, and I am not worthy to kneel down, and unloose, or to undo, or unbind, the thong of his shoes.
