¹⁹ And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?

²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,

²⁴ Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Cæsar’s.

¹⁹ The chief priests and the men who taught the Jewish laws realized that he was accusing them when he told the parable about what those wicked men did. So they immediately tried to find a way to seize MTY him, but they did not seize him, because they were afraid of what the people there would do if they did that.

²⁰ So they watched him carefully. They also hired ◄spies/secret agents► who pretended to be sincere. But they really wanted to get him to say something for which they could accuse him. They wanted to be able to turn him over to the authority of the governor of the province. But they also knew that the Jews were disgusted with having to pay taxes to the government.

²¹ So one of them asked Jesus, “Teacher, we (exc) know that you (sg) speak and teach what is right. You tell the truth even if important people do not like it. You teach truthfully what God wants us to do.

²² So tell us what you think about this matter: Is it right that we pay taxes to the Roman government MTY, or not?”

²³ But Jesus knew that they were trying to trick him to get him into trouble, either with the Jews, who hated to pay those taxes, or with the Roman government. So he said to them,

²⁴ “Show me a Roman coin. Then tell me whose picture is on it. And tell me whose name is on it.” They showed him a coin and said, “It has the picture and name of Caesar, the head of the Roman government.”

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.

²⁰ And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.

²¹ And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:

²² Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?

²³ But he saw through their trick and said to them,

²⁴ Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.

²⁰ And having watched him, they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in his language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no man's person, but teachest with truth the way of God:

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

²³ But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?

²⁴ Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.

²⁰ And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?

²³ But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?

²⁴ Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar’s.

²⁰ And having watched Him closely, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.

²¹ Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

²² Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

²³ But perceiving their craftiness, He said to them, “Why do you test Me?

²⁴ Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They answered and said, “Caesar's.”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the scribes wanted to lay hands on Him right then, but they were afraid —they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ Keeping a close watch on Him, they sent spies, who pretended to be innocent, so that they might latch on to something He said, so as to hand Him over to the power and the authority of the governor.

²¹ So they questioned Him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and you do not show favoritism but teach the way of God in truth.

²² Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

²³ But He perceived their craftiness and said to them: “Why are you testing me?

²⁴ Show me a denarius—whose image and inscription does it have?” In answer they said, “Caesar's.”

¹⁹ Immediately the religious teachers and the chief priests wanted to arrest him because they realized that the story Jesus told was aimed at them, but they were afraid of what the people would do.

²⁰ Watching for an opportunity they sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They tried to catch Jesus out in something he said so they could hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ They said, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is good and right, and that you're not swayed by the opinions of others. You truly teach the way of God.

²² So should we pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

²³ But Jesus saw through their trickery, and said to them,

²⁴ “Show me a coin—a denarius. Whose image and inscription is on it?” “Caesar's,” they answered.

¹⁹ Then the hie Priests, and the Scribes the same houre went about to lay hands on him: (but they feared the people) for they perceiued that he had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should faine themselues iust men, to take him in his talke, and to deliuer him vnto the power and authoritie of the gouernour.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest, and teachest right, neither doest thou accept mans person, but teachest the way of God truely.

²² Is it lawfull for vs to giue Cesar tribute or no?

²³ But he perceiued their craftines, and sayd vnto them, Why tempt ye me?

²⁴ Shew me a penie. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered, and sayd, Cesars.

¹⁹ After this the teachers of the Law and the chief priest were eager to lay hands on Jesus then and there, but they were afraid of the people; for they saw that it was at them that he had aimed this parable.

²⁰ Having watched their opportunity, they afterward sent some spies, who pretended to be good men, to catch Jesus in the course of conversation, and so enable them to give him up to the Governor's jurisdiction and authority.

²¹ These spies asked Jesus a question. They said, “Teacher, we know that you are right in what you say and teach, and that you do not take any account of a person's position, but teach the way of God honestly;

²² are we right in paying tribute to the Emperor or not?”

²³ Seeing through their deceitfulness, Jesus said to them,

²² Does Torah ·Teaching· permit us to pay taxes to Caesar Ruler, or not?”

²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test me?

²⁴ Show me a denarius one day’s wage. Whose image and inscription are on it?” They answered, “Caesar’s Ruler’s.”

¹⁹ And the hye Prestes and the Scribes the same howre went about to laye hondes on him but they feared the people. For they perceaved that he had spoken this similitude agaynst them.

²⁰ And they watched him and sent forth spies which shuld fayne them selves perfecte to take him in his wordes and to delyvre him vnto the power and auctorite of the debite.

²¹ And they axed him sayinge: Master we knowe that thou sayest and teachest ryght nother cosiderest thou eny manes degre but teachest the waye of God truly.

²² Ys it laufull for vs to geve Cesar tribute or no?

²⁰ And they espied, and sent spies, that feigned themselves just, that they should take him in word, and betake him to the power of the prince, and to the power of the justice.

²¹ And they asked him, and said, Master, we know, that rightly thou sayest and teachest or that thou sayest and teachest rightly; and thou takest not the person of man, but thou teachest in truth the way of God.

²² Is it leaveful to us to give tribute to the emperor or to Caesar, or nay?

²³ And he beheld the deceit of them, and said to them, What tempt ye me?

²⁴ Show ye to me a penny; whose image and superscription hath it? They answered, and said to him, The emperor’s or Caesar’s.

¹⁹ And the princes of (the) priests, and (the) scribes, sought to lay on him hands in that hour, or And the princes of the priests, and the scribes, sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they dreaded the people; for they knew that to them he said this likeness. (And the high priests, and the scribes, wanted to lay their hands on him at that time, but they feared the people; for they knew that he had said this parable about them.)

²⁰ And they espied, and sent spies, that feigned themselves (to be) just, that they should take him in word, and betake him to the power of the prince, and to the power of the justice. (And they watched him, and sent spies, who pretended to be righteous, or honest men, so that they could catch him with his own words, and then deliver him unto the power and the authority of the Governor.)

²¹ And they asked him, and said, Master (or Teacher), we know, that rightly thou sayest and teachest, or Master, we know, that thou sayest and teachest rightly; and thou takest not the person of man (or and thou favourest not any person), but thou teachest in truth the way of God.

²² Is it leaveful to us to give tribute to the emperor, or to Caesar, or nay? (Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?)

²⁰ And thei aspieden, and senten aspieris, that feyneden hem iust, that thei schulden take hym in word, and bitaak hym to the `power of the prince, and to the power of the iustice.

²¹ And thei axiden hym, and seiden, Maister, we witen, that riytli thou seist and techist; and thou takist not the persoone of man, but thou techist in treuthe the weie of God.

²² Is it leueful to vs to yyue tribute to the emperoure, or nay?

²³ And he biheld the disseit of hem, and seide to hem, What tempten ye me?

²⁴ Shewe ye to me a peny; whos ymage and superscripcioun hath it? Thei answerden, and seiden to hym, The emperouris.

²⁰ And, having watched him, they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

²¹ and they questioned him, saying, 'Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;

²² Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

²³ And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, 'Why me do ye tempt?

²⁴ shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, 'Of Caesar:'
