²⁸ For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have wherewith to complete it?

²⁹ Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him,

³⁰ saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

³¹ Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace.

³³ So therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt therefore is good: but if even the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

²⁸ I will illustrate MET. If one of you desired to build a ◄tower/big house►, ◄you would surely first sit down and determine how much it would cost!/would you not first sit down and determine how much it would cost?► RHQ Then you would determine whether you had enough money to complete it.

²⁹ If you did not do that, if you laid the foundation and were not able to finish the rest of the tower, everyone who saw it would make fun of you.

³⁰ They would say, ‘This man started to build a tower, but he was not able to finish it!’

³¹ Or, if a king decided to send his army to war against another king, ◄he would surely first sit down with those who advised him./would he not first sit down with those who advised him?► RHQ They would determine whether his army, which had only ten thousand soldiers, could defeat the other army, which had twenty thousand soldiers, and was about to attack his army.

³² If he decided that his army could not defeat that army, he would send messengers to the other king while the other army was still far away. He would tell the messengers to say to that king, ‘What things must I do to have peace with your country?’

³³ So, similarly, if any one of you does not first decide that you (sg) are willing to give up all that you have, you cannot be my disciple.”

³⁴ Jesus also said, “You are like MET salt, which is useful to put on food. But ◄salt certainly cannot be made { you certainly cannot make salt} to taste salty again if it stops tasting salty!/can salt be made {can you make salt} to taste salty again if it quits tasting salty?► RHQ

²⁹ For fear that if he makes a start and is not able to go on with it to the end, all who see it will be laughing at him,

³⁰ And saying, This man made a start at building and is not able to make it complete.

³¹ Or what king, going to war with another king, will not first take thought if he will be strong enough, with ten thousand men, to keep off him who comes against him with twenty thousand?

³² Or while the other is still a great distance away, he sends representatives requesting conditions of peace.

³³ And so whoever is not ready to give up all he has may not be my disciple.

³⁴ For salt is good, but if the taste goes from it, of what use is it?

²⁸ For which of you, desirous of building a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, if he have what is needed to complete it;

²⁹ in order that, having laid the foundation of it, and not being able to finish it, all who see it do not begin to mock at him,

³⁰ saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish?

³¹ Or what king, going on his way to engage in war with another king, does not, sitting down first, take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him coming against him with twenty thousand?

³² and if not, while he is yet far off, having sent an embassy, he asks for terms of peace.

³³ Thus then every one of you who forsakes not all that is his own cannot be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt then is good, but if the salt also has become savourless, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

²⁸ For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it:

²⁹ Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him,

³⁰ Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

³¹ Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?

³² Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace.

³³ So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

²⁹ Lest perhaps after he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all those who see it begin to mock him,

³⁰ saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

³¹ Or what king, going to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?

³² Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks the terms for peace.

³³ So likewise, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be My disciple.

³⁴ “Salt is good; but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?

²⁸ “Further, which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and calculate the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

²⁹ This so he does not lay a foundation without being able to finish, and all who see it begin to ridicule him,

³⁰ saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish!’

³¹ “Or what king, going to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

³² And if not, while the other is still far away he sends a delegation and asks for terms for peace.

³³ “So likewise, any of you who does not renounce all his own possessions cannot be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt is good; but should the salt become insipid, with what can it be seasoned?

²⁸ If you planned to build a tower, wouldn't you first work out how much it would cost, and see if you had enough money to complete it?

²⁹ Otherwise, if after laying the foundation you weren't able to finish it, everyone who saw it would laugh at you, saying,

³⁰ ‘Look at him: he started building but he couldn't finish it.’

³¹ What king goes to war with another king without first sitting down with his advisors to work out whether he and his ten thousand can defeat the one marching against him with twenty thousand?

³² If he can't, he'll send representatives to ask for peace while the other king is still a long way off.

³³ In the same way every one of you who doesn't give up everything can't be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt is good, but if it loses its taste, how can you make it salty again?

²⁸ For which of you minding to builde a towre, sitteth not downe before, and counteth the cost, whether hee haue sufficient to performe it,

²⁹ Lest that after he hath laide the foundation, and is not able to performe it, all that behold it, begin to mocke him,

³⁰ Saying, This man began to builde, and was not able to make an end?

³¹ Or what King going to make warre against another King, sitteth not downe first, and taketh counsell, whether he be able with ten thousande, to meete him that commeth against him with twentie thousand?

³² Or els while hee is yet a great way off, hee sendeth an ambassage, and desireth peace.

³³ So likewise, whosoeuer hee be of you, that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

²⁸ Jesus said to the people, “If you want to follow me, first you have to think about what it will cost you. You know, it’s the same as when you want to build a big high building. You have to think first about how much it will cost, and you find out if you have enough money to do the whole job.

²⁹ If you don’t do that, you might start the job, then you might run out of money, and never finish that building. Then other people will laugh at you

³⁰ and say, ‘You stupid fool. You started to build that thing, but you couldn’t finish it. Now it is no good for anything, so you wasted your money.’”

³¹ Then Jesus told them another picture story. He said, “If the boss of a country has to get his army to fight another army, he first thinks about it, to see if he will win. If the other army has a lot more soldiers he might say, ‘No. My army is too little. We can’t win.’

³² Then he will send a message real quick to the boss of the other army. He will say to him, ‘Let’s not fight each other. Let’s talk about the problem and sort it out, without fighting.’”

³³ Then Jesus said, “It is the same for you. If you want to be one of my followers, you have to think about the cost. You will have to leave everything you own, and then you can follow me.”

²⁸ Which of you disposed to bilde a toure sytteth not doune before and counteth the cost whether he have sufficient to performe it?

²⁹ lest after he hath layde the foundacion and is not able to performe it all that beholde it beginne to mocke him

³⁰ sayinge: this man beganne to bilde and was not able to make an ende.

³¹ Or what kynge goeth to make batayle agaynst another kinge and sitteth not doune fyrst and casteth in his mynde whether he be able with ten thousande to mete him that cometh agaynst him with .xx thousand.

³² Or els whyll ye other is yet a greate waye of he will sende embasseatours and desyre peace.

³³ So lykewyse none of you that forsaketh not all that he hath can be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt is good but yf salt have loste hyr saltnes what shall be seasoned ther with?

²⁸ For which of you who desires to build a tower does not first sit down and count the cost to calculate if he has what he needs to complete it?

²⁹ Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to mock him,

³⁰ saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'

³¹ Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take advice about whether he is able with ten thousand men to fight the other king who comes against him with twenty thousand men?

³² If not, while the other army is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for conditions of peace.

³³ So therefore each of you, that forsaketh not or renounceth not all (the) things that he hath, may not be my disciple (or cannot be my disciple).

²⁸ For who of you willynge to bilde a toure, whether he `first sitte not, and countith the spensis that ben nedeful, if he haue to perfourme?

²⁹ Lest aftir that he hath set the foundement, and mowe not perfourme, alle that seen, bigynnen to scorne hym, and seie, For this man bigan to bilde,

³⁰ and myyte not make an ende.

³¹ Or what kyng that wole go to do a bataile ayens anothir kyng, whether he sittith not first, and bithenkith, if he may with ten thousynde go ayens hym that cometh ayens hym with twenti thousynde?

³² Ellis yit while he is afer, he sendynge a messanger, preieth tho thingis that ben of pees.

³³ So therfor ech of you, that forsakith not alle thingis that he hath, may not be my disciple.

³⁴ Salt is good; but if salt vanysche, in what thing schal it be sauerid?

²⁸ 'For who of you, willing to build a tower, doth not first, having sat down, count the expence, whether he have the things for completing?

²⁹ lest that he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are beholding may begin to mock him,

³⁰ saying — This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

³¹ 'Or what king going on to engage with another king in war, doth not, having sat down, first consult if he be able with ten thousand to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him?

³² and if not so — he being yet a long way off — having sent an embassy, he doth ask the things for peace.

³³ 'So, then, every one of you who doth not take leave of all that he himself hath, is not able to be my disciple.

³⁴ 'The salt is good, but if the salt doth become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?
