Luke 9:17-55 in English

¹⁷ And they ate, and were all filled: and there was taken up that which remained over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, as he was praying apart, the disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Who do the multitudes say that I am?

¹⁹ And they answering said, John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again.

²⁰ And he said unto them, But who say ye that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ of God.

²¹ But he charged them, and commanded them to tell this to no man;

²² saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.

²³ And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

²⁴ For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

²⁵ For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self?

²⁶ For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in his own glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you of a truth, There are some of them that stand here, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

²⁸ And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray.

²⁹ And as he was praying, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became white and dazzling.

³⁰ And behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses and Elijah;

³¹ who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.

³³ And it came to pass, as they were parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said.

³⁴ And while he said these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.

³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my chosen: hear ye him.

³⁶ And when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they held their peace, and told no man in those days any of the things which they had seen.

³⁷ And it came to pass, on the next day, when they were come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.

³⁸ And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child:

³⁹ and behold, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him sorely.

⁴⁰ And I besought thy disciples to cast it out; and they could not.

⁴¹ And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son.

⁴² And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples,

⁴⁴ Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men.

⁴⁵ But they understood not this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

⁴⁶ And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was the greatest.

⁴⁷ But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their heart, he took a little child, and set him by his side,

⁴⁸ and said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same is great.

⁴⁹ And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.

⁵⁰ But Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against you is for you.

⁵¹ And it came to pass, when the days were well-nigh come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² and sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

⁵³ And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he were going to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?

⁵⁵ But he turned, and rebuked them.

⁴⁴ Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?

⁵⁵ But he turned, and rebuked them.

¹⁷ All the people in the crowd ate until they all had enough to eat. Then the disciples collected twelve baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over!

¹⁸ One day Jesus was praying in a place where only the disciples were with him. He asked them, “The crowds of people, who do they say that I really am?”

¹⁹ They replied, “ Some people say that you are John the Baptizer, who has come back to life again. Others say that you are the prophet Elijah, who has returned from heaven as God promised. Others say that you are one of the other prophets who lived long ago, who has come back to life again.”

²⁰ He asked them, “What about you (pl)? Who do you say that I am?” Peter replied, “You (sg) are the Messiah, who has come from God.”

²¹ Then Jesus warned them strongly not to tell that to anyone yet.

²² Then he said, “ Even though I am the one who came from heaven, it is necessary that I suffer very much. It is also necessary that I be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the men who teach the Jewish laws {that the Jewish elders and the chief priests and the men who teach the Jewish laws will reject me}. It is necessary that I be killed {that people will kill me}. Then on the third day after that, I will become alive again.”

²³ Then he said to all of them, “If any one of you wants to be my disciple, you must not do only what you yourself desire to do. Specifically, you must be willing each day MET to let others hurt you and disgrace you. That is like what is done to criminals who are forced to carry MET crosses to the place where they will be executed. That is what anyone who wants to be my disciple must do.

²⁴ You must do that, because those who try to save their lives by denying that they belong to me when people want to kill them for believing in me will not live eternally, but those who are killed because of being my disciples will live forever with me.

²⁵ People might get everything that they want in this world, but ◄they are really gaining nothing if they do not get eternal life by becoming my disciples!/are they really gaining anything if they do not get eternal life by becoming my disciples?► RHQ

²⁶ Those who reject my message and refuse to say that they belong to me, I, the one who came from heaven, will also refuse to say that they belong to me when I come back with the holy angels, and have the glorious brightness that my Father has.

²⁷ But listen carefully! Some of you (pl) who are here now will see God ruling MET in many powerful ways. You will see it before you die!”

²⁸ About a week after Jesus said those things, he took Peter, James, and James' brother John and led them up a mountain so that he could pray there.

²⁹ As he was praying, his face appeared very different to them. His clothes became as bright as lightning.

³⁰ Suddenly, two men appeared who had the brightness of heaven surrounding them. They were prophets who had lived long ago, Moses and Elijah. They started talking with Jesus about how he would accomplish what God had planned when he died EUP very soon in Jerusalem.

³² Peter and the other disciples who were with him were sound asleep. When they woke up, they saw Jesus' brightness. They also saw the two men standing with him.

³³ As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is wonderful for us to be here! Allow us to make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah!” But he really did not realize what he was talking about.

³⁴ As he was saying that, a bright cloud appeared and covered them all. The disciples were afraid as the cloud surrounded them.

³⁵ God MTY/EUP spoke to them from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son. He is the one whom I have chosen to do a great work for me. So you must listen to him!”

³⁶ After God MTY/EUP finished saying that, the three disciples saw that only Jesus was there. They did not tell anyone what they had seen until much later.

³⁷ The next day, after they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd of people met Jesus.

³⁸ Then a man from the crowd exclaimed, “Teacher, I plead with you, do something to help my son! He is my only child!

³⁹ At various times an evil spirit suddenly seizes him and causes him to scream. The evil spirit shakes him violently and causes him to foam at the mouth. It does not leave until my child is completely exhausted.

⁴⁰ I pleaded with your disciples who were here for them to expel the evil spirit, but they were not able to do it!”

⁴¹ Jesus replied by saying to everyone who had gathered there, “ You who have seen how I help people do not believe that you can do anything. What you think is perverted! How long must I be with you before you are able to do what I do RHQ? How long must I endure your lack of faith?” Then he said to the boy's father, “Bring your (sg) son here to me!”

⁴² While they were bringing the boy to Jesus, the demon attacked the boy, threw him to the ground, and shook him severely. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he returned him to his father's care.

⁴³ All the people there were amazed at the great power of God. Luke 9:43b-45 While they were all amazed at all the miracles Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ “Think carefully MTY about what I am about to tell you: Even though I am the one who came from heaven, I will soon be handed over to the authorities (OR, my enemies) { someone is about to enable MTY my enemies to seize me}.”

⁴⁵ But the disciples did not understand what he was saying; God prevented them from understanding it, so that they would not know yet what he meant. And they were afraid to ask him about what he had said.

⁴⁶ The disciples began to argue among themselves about which one of them would be the greatest when Jesus became king.

⁴⁷ But Jesus perceived what they were thinking. So he brought a young child to his side.

⁴⁸ He said to the disciples, “Those who, because they love me, (OR, because they want to behave like me) welcome a little child ◄ like this one/ as I would► MTY, God considers that MET they are welcoming me. And those who welcome me, God considers that MET they are welcoming him, the one who sent me. Remember that those among you who think of themselves as being very unimportant will be the ones whom God considers to be great.”

⁴⁹ John replied to Jesus, “Master, we (exc) saw a man who was expelling demons, claiming that he had authority from you MTY to do that. So we told him to stop doing it, because he is not one of us disciples.”

⁵⁰ But Jesus said to him and the other disciples, “Do not tell him not to do that! Remember that those who are not opposing you are trying to achieve the same goals that you are!”

⁵¹ When it was almost time for God to take Jesus up to heaven, he firmly resolved to go to Jerusalem.

⁵² He sent some messengers to go ahead of him, and they entered a village in Samaria district to prepare for him SYN to go there.

⁵³ But the Samaritans did not like the Jews because of their insisting that it was necessary to go to Jerusalem to worship God. So, because Jesus had firmly resolved to go to Jerusalem, they would not let him come to their village.

⁵⁴ When two of his disciples, James and John, heard about that, they said, “Lord, do you (sg) want us (exc) to pray that God will send fire down from heaven, as the prophet Elijah did long ago, and destroy those people?”

⁵⁵ But Jesus turned and rebuked them for saying that.

²² saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”

²³ He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁴ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.

²⁵ For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?

²⁶ For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”

²⁸ About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.

²⁹ As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.

³⁰ Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

³³ As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.

³⁷ On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.

³⁸ Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.

³⁹ Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.

⁴⁰ I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”

⁴¹ Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”

⁴² While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”

⁴⁵ But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

⁴⁶ An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.

⁴⁷ Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,

⁴⁸ and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”

⁴⁹ John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”

⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

⁵¹ It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem

⁵² and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.

⁵³ They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”

⁵⁵ But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.

¹⁷ They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.

¹⁸ As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”

¹⁹ They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

²⁰ He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

²¹ But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,

²² saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”

²³ He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁴ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.

²⁵ For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?

²⁶ For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”

²⁸ About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.

²⁹ As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.

³⁰ Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

³³ As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.

²¹ But he gave them special orders, not to say this to any man;

²² Saying, The Son of man will undergo much and be put on one side by the rulers and the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and be put to death, and on the third day he will come back to life.

²³ And he said to them all, If any man has a desire to come after me, let him give up all, and take up his cross every day, and come after me.

²⁴ For whoever has a desire to keep his life will have it taken from him, but whoever gives up his life because of me, will keep it.

²⁵ For what profit will a man have if he gets all the world, but undergoes loss or destruction himself?

²⁶ For if any man has a feeling of shame because of me or of my words, the Son of man will have shame because of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But truly I say to you, Some of those who are here now will have no taste of death till they see the kingdom of God.

²⁸ And about eight days after he had said these things, he took Peter and John and James with him and went up into the mountain for prayer.

²⁹ And while he was in prayer, his face was changed and his clothing became white and shining.

³⁰ And two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with him;

³¹ Who were seen in glory and were talking of his death which was about to take place in Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and those who were with him were overcome with sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were with him.

³³ And when they were about to go away from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah: having no knowledge of what he was saying.

³⁴ And while he said these things, the shade of a cloud came over them, and they were full of fear when they went into the cloud.

³⁵ And there was a voice from the cloud saying, This is my Son, the man of my selection; give ear to him.

³⁶ And after the voice was gone they saw that Jesus was by himself. And they kept quiet, and said nothing at that time to anyone of the things which they had seen.

³⁷ And on the day after, when they came down from the mountain, a great band of people came to him.

³⁸ And a man from among them, crying out, said, Master, I make a request to you, give a thought to my son, for he is my only child:

³⁹ And see, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he gives a cry, twisted in pain and streaming at the lips, and when it goes away from him at last, he is marked as from blows.

⁴⁰ And I made a request to your disciples to send it out of him, but they were not able to do it.

⁴¹ And Jesus said, O generation without faith and false in heart, how long will I have to be with you and put up with you? let your son come here.

⁴² And while he was coming, he was pushed violently down and twisted by the evil spirit. But Jesus gave sharp orders to the unclean spirit, and made the boy well, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And they were full of wonder at the great power of God. But while they were all wondering at all the things which he did, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ Let these words go deep into your ears, for the Son of man will be given up into the hands of men.

⁴⁵ But this saying was not clear to them and its sense was kept secret from them so that they were not able to see it: and they had fear of questioning him about it.

⁴⁶ Now there was a discussion among them about which of them would be the greatest.

⁴⁷ But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their hearts, he took a small child and put him by his side,

⁴⁸ And said to them, Whoever gives honour to this child in my name, gives honour to me: and whoever gives honour to me, gives honour to him who sent me: for whoever is least among you all, that man is great.

⁴⁹ And John, answering, said, Master, we saw a man driving out evil spirits in your name, and we did not let him do it, because he was not one of us.

⁵⁰ But Jesus said to him, Let him do it, for he who is not against you is for you.

⁵¹ And it came about that when the days were near for him to be taken up, his face was turned to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² And he sent men before: and they came to a small town of Samaria to make ready for him.

⁵³ But they would not have him there, because he was clearly going to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, Lord, may we send fire from heaven and put an end to them?

⁵⁵ But turning round he said sharp words to them.

¹⁷ And they all ate and were filled; and there was taken up of what had remained over and above to them in fragments twelve hand-baskets.

¹⁸ And it came to pass as he was praying alone, his disciples were with him, and he asked them saying, Who do the crowds say that I am?

²³ And he said to them all, If any one will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me;

²⁴ for whosoever shall desire to save his life shall lose it, but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, he shall save it.

²⁵ For what shall a man profit if he shall have gained the whole world, and have destroyed, or come under the penalty of the loss of himself?

²⁶ For whosoever shall have been ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he shall come in his glory, and in that of the Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I say unto you of a truth, There are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until they shall have seen the kingdom of God.

²⁸ And it came to pass after these words, about eight days, that taking Peter and John and James he went up into a mountain to pray.

²⁹ And as he prayed the fashion of his countenance became different and his raiment white and effulgent.

³⁰ And lo, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elias,

³¹ who, appearing in glory, spoke of his departure which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

³² But Peter and those with him were oppressed with sleep: but having fully awoke up they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

³³ And it came to pass as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.

⁴⁰ And I besought thy disciples that they might cast him out, and they could not.

⁴¹ And Jesus answering said, O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you? Bring hither thy son.

⁴² But as he was yet coming, the demon tore him and dragged him all together. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And all were astonished at the glorious greatness of God. And as all wondered at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ Do ye let these words sink into your ears. For the Son of man is about to be delivered into men's hands.

⁴⁵ But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them that they should not perceive it. And they feared to ask him concerning this saying.

⁴⁶ And a reasoning came in amongst them, who should be the greatest of them.

⁴⁷ And Jesus, seeing the reasoning of their heart, having taken a little child set it by him,

⁴⁸ and said to them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receives me, and whosoever shall receive me receives him that sent me. For he who is the least among you all, he is great.

⁴⁹ And John answering said, Master, we saw some one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbad him, because he follows not with us.

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Forbid him not, for he that is not against you is for you.

⁵¹ And it came to pass when the days of his receiving up were fulfilled, that he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.

⁵² And he sent messengers before his face. And having gone they entered into a village of the Samaritans that they might make ready for him.

⁵³ And they did not receive him, because his face was turned as going to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And his disciples James and John seeing it said, Lord, wilt thou that we speak that fire come down from heaven and consume them, as also Elias did?

⁵⁵ But turning he rebuked them and said, Ye know not of what spirit ye are.

⁴⁴ And all were astonished at the mighty power of God. But while all wondered at all the things he did, he said to his disciples: Lay you up in your hearts these words, for it shall come to pass, that the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

⁴⁵ But they understood not this word; and it was hid from them, so that they perceived it not. And they were afraid to ask him concerning this word.

⁴⁶ And there entered a thought into them, which of them should be greater.

⁴⁷ But Jesus seeing the thoughts of their heart, took a child and set him by him,

⁴⁸ And said to them: Whosoever shall receive this child in my name, receiveth me; and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me. For he that is the lesser among you all, he is the greater.

⁴⁹ And John, answering, said: Master, we saw a certain man casting out devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us.

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him: Forbid him not; for he that is not against you, is for you.

⁵¹ And it came to pass, when the days of his assumption were accomplishing, that he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.

⁵² And he sent messengers before his face; and going, they entered into a city of the Samaritans, to prepare for him.

⁵³ And they received him not, because his face was of one going to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John had seen this, they said: Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them?

³³ And it happened, as they were parting from Him, that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tents: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he was saying.

³⁴ Now as he said these things, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.

³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him!”

³⁶ When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found alone. But they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things they had seen.

³⁷ Now it happened on the next day, when they came down from the mountain, that a great crowd met Him.

³⁸ And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg You, look upon my son, for he is my only child.

³⁹ And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him.

⁴⁰ So I begged Your disciples that they might cast it out, but they could not.”

⁴¹ Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”

⁴² And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And they were all amazed at the majesty of God. But while everyone marveled at all the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,

⁴⁴ “Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

⁴⁵ But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.

⁴⁶ Then a dispute came up among them as to which of them might be the greatest.

⁴⁷ But Jesus, having seen the thought of their heart, taking a little child, He stood him beside Himself,

⁴⁸ and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all shall be great.”

⁴⁹ Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”

⁵⁰ But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

⁵¹ Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, so they might prepare for Him.

⁵³ But they did not receive Him, because He was determined to go to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And when they saw this, James and John His disciples said, “Lord, do You wish that we should call down fire from heaven and consume them, as Elijah did?”

⁵⁵ But turning, He rebuked them, and said, “You do not know of what sort of spirit you are.

¹⁷ So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the pieces they left were taken up.

¹⁸ Now it happened, as He was alone praying, that the disciples joined Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

¹⁹ In answer they said, “John the Baptizer, but others say ‘Elijah,’ while others that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.”

²⁰ Then He said to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?” In answer Peter said, “The Christ of God!”

²¹ But He strictly warned and commanded them to tell this to no one,

²² saying, “The Son of the Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”

²³ Then He said to everyone: “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁴ Because whoever desires to ‘save’ his life will waste it, but whoever ‘wastes’ his life for my sake, he will save it.

²⁵ Further, what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, yet wastes or forfeits his very self?

²⁶ Yes, whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of the Man will be ashamed of Him, whenever He comes in the glory—His, and the Father's, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ However, I tell you truly: there are some standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the Kingdom of God!”

²⁸ Now about eight days after these words, it happened that He took along Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray.

²⁹ And as He prayed, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing dazzling white.

³⁰ And then, two men started talking with Him, who were Moses and Elijah;

³¹ they appeared in glory and were explaining His ‘departure’, that He was about to bring to fruition in Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; but becoming fully awake, they saw His glory, and the two men who stood with Him.

³³ Then it happened: as they were parting from Him, Peter said to Jesus: “Master, it is good for us to be here” and “Should we make three shelters: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah?”—not knowing what he was saying.

⁴⁹ Then John reacted by saying, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.”

⁵⁰ So Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid, because he who is not against us is for us.”

⁵¹ Now it happened, as the days for His Ascension approached, that He set His face to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² and He sent messengers ahead of Him. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for Him.

⁵³ But they did not receive Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ Well, when His disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and consume them, just like Elijah did?”

⁵⁵ But He turned and rebuked them saying: “You do not know of what sort of spirit you are.

¹⁷ Everybody ate until they were full, and then twelve baskets of leftovers were collected.

¹⁸ At another time, when Jesus was praying in private with just his disciples with him, he asked them, “All these crowds of people—who do they say I am?”

¹⁹ “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others say one of the ancient prophets risen from the dead,” they replied.

²⁰ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” “God's Messiah,” Peter replied.

²¹ Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anybody about this.

²² “The Son of man must experience terrible sufferings,” he said. “He will be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the religious teachers. He will be killed, but on the third day he will rise again.”

²³ “If any one of you wants to follow me, you must deny yourself, pick up your cross daily, and follow me,” Jesus told all of them.

²⁴ “For if you want to save your life, you will lose it; and if you lose your life for my sake, you will save it.

²⁵ What do you benefit by gaining the whole world if you end up lost or destroyed?

²⁶ If you are ashamed of me and my message, the Son of man will be ashamed of you when he comes in his glory, and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.

²⁷ I tell you the truth, some standing here won't taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

²⁸ About eight days later, after he had told them this, Jesus took Peter, John, and James with him and went up a mountain to pray.

²⁹ While he was praying, his face changed in appearance, and his clothing became a dazzling white.

³⁰ Two men appeared in brilliant glory. They were Moses and Elijah, and they began to talk with Jesus.

³¹ They spoke about his death, which would soon happen in Jerusalem.

³² Peter and the others were asleep. When they woke up they saw Jesus in his glory, and the two men standing next to him.

³³ As the two men were about to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it's great to be here. Let's make some shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He really didn't know what he was saying.

³⁴ While he was speaking a cloud came and spread over them. They were terrified as they entered the cloud.

³⁵ A voice spoke from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him!”

³⁶ When the voice finished speaking, Jesus was there alone. They kept this to themselves, and didn't tell anyone at that time what they'd seen.

³⁷ The next day, when they had come down the mountain, a huge crowd was waiting to meet Jesus.

³⁸ A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, please look at my son. He's my only child.

³⁹ A spirit possesses him and he screams immediately. It sends him into convulsions and makes him foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him alone and it causes him a lot of pain.

⁴⁰ I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't.”

⁴¹ “What an unbelieving and corrupt people you are! How long do I have to remain here with you, and put up with you?” said Jesus. “Bring your son here.”

⁴² Even as the boy came over, the demon sent him into convulsions, throwing him to the ground. But Jesus intervened, rebuking the evil spirit and healing the boy, and then gave him back to his father.

⁴³ Everyone was amazed at this demonstration of God's power. However, even though everyone was amazed by all he did, Jesus warned his disciples,

⁴⁴ “Listen carefully to what I'm telling you: the Son of man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”

⁴⁵ But they didn't understand what this meant. Its meaning was hidden from them so they didn't realize its implications, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

⁴⁶ Then an argument started among the disciples about which of them was the greatest.

⁴⁷ But Jesus, knowing what they were arguing about, picked up and placed a small child next to him.

⁴⁸ Then he said to them, “Anyone who accepts this little child in my name accepts me, and anyone who accepts me accepts the one who sent me. Whoever is least among you all is the greatest.”

⁴⁹ John spoke up, saying, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him because he wasn't one of us.”

⁵⁰ “Don't stop him,” Jesus replied. “Anyone who isn't against you is for you.”

⁵¹ As the time approached for him to ascend to heaven, Jesus was determined to go to Jerusalem.

⁵² He sent messengers on ahead to a Samaritan village to get things ready for him.

⁵³ But the people would not welcome him because he was determined to press on to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ When James and John saw this, they asked Jesus, “Master, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to burn them up?”

⁵⁵ But Jesus turned, and reprimanded them.

¹⁷ So they did all eate, and were satisfied: and there was taken vp of that remained to them, twelue baskets full of broken meate.

¹⁸ And it came to passe, as hee was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?

¹⁹ They answered, and sayd, Iohn Baptist: and others say, Elias: and some say, that one of the olde Prophets is risen againe.

²⁰ And he sayd vnto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answered, and sayd, That Christ of God.

²¹ And he warned and commanded them, that they should tell that to no man,

²² Saying, The Sonne of man must suffer many things and be reproued of the Elders, and of the hie Priests and Scribes, and be slaine, and the third day rise againe.

²³ And he sayd to them all, If any man will come after me, let him denie himselfe, and take vp his crosse dayly, and follow me.

²⁴ For whosoeuer will saue his life, shall lose it: and whosoeuer shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall saue it.

²⁵ For what auantageth it a man, if he win the whole worlde, and destroy himselfe, or lose himselfe?

²⁶ For whosoeuer shall be ashamed of me, and of my wordes, of him shall the Sonne of man be ashamed, when hee shall come in his glorie, and in the glorie of the Father, and of the holy Angels.

²⁷ And I tell you of a suretie, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they haue seene the kingdome of God.

²⁸ And it came to passe about an eyght dayes after those wordes, that he tooke Peter and Iohn, and Iames, and went vp into a mountaine to pray.

²⁹ And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was changed, and his garment was white and glistered.

³⁰ And beholde, two men talked with him, which were Moses and Elias:

³¹ Which appeared in glory, and tolde of his departing, which he shoulde accomplish at Hierusalem.

³² But Peter and they that were with him, were heauie with sleepe, and when they awoke, they saw his glorie, and the two men standing with him.

³³ And it came to passe, as they departed from him, Peter said vnto Iesus, Master, it is good for vs to be here: let vs therefore make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias, and wist not what he said.

³⁴ Whiles he thus spake, there came a cloude and ouershadowed them, and they feared when they were entring into the cloude.

³⁵ And there came a voyce out of the cloud, saying, This is that my beloued Sonne, heare him.

³⁶ And when the voyce was past, Iesus was found alone: and they kept it close, and tolde no man in those dayes any of those things which they had seene.

³⁷ And it came to passe on the next day, as they came downe from the mountaine, much people met him.

³⁸ And beholde, a man of the companie cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, beholde my sonne: for he is all that I haue.

³⁹ And loe, a spirit taketh him, and suddenly he crieth, and he teareth him, that he fometh, and hardly departeth from him, when he hath bruised him.

⁴⁰ Nowe I haue besought thy disciples to cast him out, but they could not.

⁴¹ Then Iesus answered, and said, O generation faithlesse, and crooked, howe long now shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring thy sonne hither.

⁴² And whiles he was yet comming, the deuill rent him, and tare him: and Iesus rebuked the vncleane spirite, and healed the childe, and deliuered him to his father.

⁴³ And they were all amased at the mightie power of God: and while they all wondered at al things, which Iesus did, he said vnto his disciples,

⁴⁴ Marke these wordes diligently: for it shall come to passe, that the Sonne of man shalbe deliuered into the handes of men.

⁴⁵ But they vnderstood not that word: for it was hid from them, so that they could not perceiue it: and they feared to aske him of that worde.

⁴⁶ Then there arose a disputation among them, which of them should be the greatest.

⁴⁷ When Iesus sawe the thoughtes of their heartes, he tooke a litle childe, and set him by him,

⁴⁸ And said vnto them, Whosoeuer receiueth this litle childe in my Name, receiueth me: and whosoeuer shall receiue me, receiueth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, he shall be great.

⁴⁹ And Iohn answered and saide, Master, we sawe one casting out deuils in thy Name, and we forbad him, because he followeth thee not with vs.

⁵⁰ Then Iesus saide vnto him, Forbid ye him not: for he that is not against vs, is with vs.

⁵¹ And it came to passe, when the dayes were accomplished, that he should be receiued vp, he setled himselfe fully to goe to Hierusalem,

⁵² And sent messengers before him: and they went and entred into a towne of the Samaritans, to prepare him lodging.

⁵³ But they woulde not receiue him, because his behauiour was, as though he would go to Hierusalem.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples, Iames and Iohn sawe it, they saide, Lord, wilt thou that we commaund, that fire come downe from heauen, and consume them, euen as Elias did?

⁵⁵ But Iesus turned about, and rebuked them, and said, Ye knowe not of what spirit ye are.

¹⁸ Afterward, when Jesus was alone, praying, his disciples joined him, and he asked them this question — “Who do the people say that I am?”

¹⁹ “John the Baptist,” was their answer; “others, however, say that you are Elijah, while others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

²⁰ “But you,” he went on, “who do you say that I am?” And to this Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

²¹ Jesus, however, strictly charged them not to say this to anyone;

³² Peter and his companions had been overpowered by sleep but, suddenly becoming wide awake, they saw Jesus glorified and the two men who were standing beside him.

³³ And, as Moses and Elijah were passing away from Jesus, Peter exclaimed, “Sir, it is good to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what he was saying;

³⁴ and, while he was speaking, a cloud came down and enveloped them; and they were afraid, as they passed into the cloud;

³⁵ and from the cloud came a voice which said — “This is my Son, the Chosen One; him you must hear.”

³⁶ And, as the voice ceased, Jesus was found alone. The apostles kept silence, and told no one about any of the things that they had seen.

³⁷ The next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Jesus.

³⁸ And just then a man in the crowd shouted out, “Teacher, I entreat you to look at my son, for he is my only child;

³⁹ all at once a spirit will seize him, suddenly shriek out, and throw him into convulsions until he foams, and will leave him only when he is utterly exhausted.

⁴⁰ I entreated your disciples to drive the spirit out, but they could not.”

⁴¹ “Faithless and perverse generation!” Jesus exclaimed; “how long must I be with you and have patience with you? Lead your son here.”

⁴² While the boy was coming up to Jesus, the demon dashed him down and threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the foul spirit, and cured the boy, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And all present were struck with awe at the majesty of God. In the midst of the general astonishment at all that Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ “Listen carefully to my words. For the Son of Man is destined to be betrayed into the hands of his fellow men.”

⁴⁵ But the disciples did not understand the meaning of this; it had been concealed from them so that they did not see it, and they were afraid to question him as to what he meant.

⁴⁶ A discussion arose amongst the disciples as to which of them was the greatest;

⁴⁷ and Jesus, knowing of the discussion that was occupying their thoughts, took hold of a little child, and placed it beside him,

⁴⁸ and then said to them, “Anyone who, for the sake of my name, welcomes even this little child is welcoming me; and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming him who sent me as his messenger. For whoever is least amongst you all — that person is great.”

⁴⁹ John said, “Sir, we saw a man driving out demons by using your name, and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow you with us.”

⁵⁰ “None of you must prevent him,” Jesus said to John; “whoever's not against you is for you.”

⁵¹ As the days before his being taken up to heaven were growing few, Jesus set his face resolutely in the direction of Jerusalem; and he sent on messengers in advance.

⁵² On their way, they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him,

⁵³ but the people there did not welcome him, because his face was set in the direction of Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ When James and John saw this, they said, “Master, do you wish us to call for fire to come down from the heavens and consume them?”

⁵⁵ But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

¹⁷ Everyone had sufficient to eat, and what was left of the broken pieces was picked up — twelve baskets.

¹⁸ Afterward, when Jesus was alone, praying, his disciples joined him, and he asked them this question — “Who do the people say that I am?”

¹⁹ “John the Baptist,” was their answer; “others, however, say that you are Elijah, while others say that one of the old prophets has risen again.”

²⁰ “But you,” he went on, “who do you say that I am?” And to this Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

²³ He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his execution-stake, and follow me.

²⁴ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it.

²⁵ For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?

²⁶ For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed, when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Abba Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here, who will in no way taste of death, until they see God’s Kingdom.”

³⁰ Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses Drawn out and Elijah My God Yah,

³¹ who appeared in glory, and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem City of peace.

³² Now Peter Rock and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

³³ As they were parting from him, Peter Rock said to Yeshua Salvation, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, and one for Moses Drawn out, and one for Elijah My God Yah,” not knowing what he said.

³⁴ While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.

³⁵ A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”

³⁸ Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.

³⁹ Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.

⁴⁰ I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”

⁴³ They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Yeshua Salvation did, he said to his disciples,

⁴⁴ “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”

⁴⁵ But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

⁴⁶ There arose an argument among them about which of them was the greatest.

⁴⁷ Yeshua Salvation, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,

⁴⁸ and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”

⁴⁹ John Yah is gracious answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.”

⁵⁰ Yeshua Salvation said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

⁵¹ It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem City of peace,

⁵² and sent messengers before his face. They went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans people from Watch-mountain, so as to prepare for him.

⁵³ They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set towards Jerusalem City of peace.

⁵⁴ When his disciples, James Surplanter and John Yah is gracious, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky, and destroy them, just as Elijah My God Yah did?”

⁵⁵ But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.

⁵¹ The time was soon coming for Jesus to go back to heaven, and he knew that, so he started to go to Jerusalem city. He wasn’t going to let anything stop him.

⁵² He walked along the road, and he was getting close to a community in Samaria country, so he sent some messengers ahead of him to ask the people there for a place to camp that night.

⁵³ But the people in that community said, “No. He is going to Jerusalem. We don’t like that Jerusalem mob, so he is not our friend. He can’t camp here tonight.”

⁵⁴ James and John, 2 of his close followers, heard what they said, and those 2 said to Jesus, “Can we ask God to send fire down from the sky and kill all those people? Do you want us to do that?”

⁵⁵ Jesus turned around and said, “No. That is very wrong. Don’t do it.”

¹⁷ And they ate and were all satisfied. And ther was taken vp of that remayned to the twelve baskettes full of broken meate.

¹⁸ And it fortuned as he was alone prayinge his disciples were with him and he axed the sayinge: Who saye ye people that I am?

¹⁹ They answered and sayd: Iohn Baptist. Some saye Helyas. And some saye one of the olde prophetes is rysen agayne.

²⁰ He sayde vnto the: Who saye ye that I am? Peter answered and sayde: thou arte the Christ of god.

²⁵ For what avauntageth it a man to wynne the whole worlde yf he loose him sylfe or runne in domage of him sylfe?

²⁶ For whosoever is ashamed of me and of my sayinges: of him shall the sonne of man be ashamed when he cometh in his awne glorie and in the glorie of his father and of the holy angels.

²⁷ And I tell you of a surety: There be some of the that stonde here which shall not tast of deeth tyll they se the kyngdome of god.

³⁷ And it chaunsed on the nexte daye as they came doune from the hyll moche people met him.

³⁸ And beholde a man of the company cryed out sayinge: Master I beseche the beholde my sonne for he is all that I have:

³⁹ and se a sprete taketh him and sodenly he cryeth and he teareth him that he fometh agayne and with moche payne departeth from him when he hath rent him

⁴⁰ and I besought thy disciples to cast him out and they coulde not.

⁴¹ Iesus answered and sayde: O generacion with oute fayth and croked: how longe shall I be with you? and shall suffre you? Bringe thy sonne hidder.

⁴⁵ But they wist not what that worde meant and that was hyd from the that they vnderstode that not. And they feared to axe him of that sayinge.

⁴⁶ Then ther arose a disputacion amonge the: who shuld be the greatest.

⁴⁷ When Iesus perceaved the thoughtes of their hertes he toke a chylde and set him hard by him

⁴⁸ and sayd vnto the: Whosoever receaveth this chylde in my name receaveth me. And whosoever receaveth me receaveth him that sent me. For he that is least amonge you all the same shalbe greate.

⁴⁹ And Iohn answered and sayde: Master we sawe one castinge out devyls in thy name and we forbade him because he foloweth not with vs.

⁵⁰ And Iesus sayde vnto him: forbyd ye him not. For he that is not agaynst vs is with vs.

⁵¹ And it folowed when the tyme was come that he shulde be receaved vp then he set his face to goo to Hierusalem

⁵³ But they wolde not receave him be cause his face was as though he wolde goo to Ierusalem.

⁵⁴ When his disciples Iames and Iohn sawe that they sayde: Lorde wilt thou that we commaunde that fyre come doune from heven and consume them even as Helias dyd?

⁴¹ Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”

²³ He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

²⁴ For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.

²⁵ For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?

²⁶ For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.

²⁷ But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”

²⁸ About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.

²⁹ As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.

³⁰ Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

³² Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.

³³ As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.

³⁵ A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”

³⁸ Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.

³⁹ Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.

²⁶ For whoso shameth me and my words, man’s Son shall shame him, when he cometh in his majesty, and of the Father’s, and of the holy angels.

³¹ were seen in majesty; and they said his going out, which he should fulfill in Jerusalem.

³² And Peter, and they that were with him, were heavy of sleep, or were grieved, or heavied, with sleep, and they waking saw his majesty, and the two men that stood with him.

⁵⁴ And when James and John, his disciples, saw, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we say, that fire come down from heaven, and waste them, as Elijah did?

²⁹ And while he prayed, the likeness of his face was changed, and his clothing was white shining.

³⁰ And lo! two men spake with him, and Moses and Elias (And behold! two men spoke with him, yea, Moses and Elijah)

³¹ were seen in (their) majesty; and they said (of) his going out, which he should fulfill in Jerusalem. (were seen in their glory; and they spoke of his death, yea, of his destiny, which he would fulfill in Jerusalem.)

³² And Peter, and they that were with him, were heavy of sleep, or were grieved, or heavied, with sleep, and they waking saw his majesty, and the two men that stood with him, (or but awakening they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him).

³³ And it was done, when they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Commander, it is good that we be here, and make we here three tabernacles, one to thee, and one to Moses, and one to Elias. And he knew not what he should say. (And it was done, when they had left him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here, and we shall make here three tents, or three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah. And he did not know what he should say.)

³⁴ But while he spake these things, a cloud was made, and overshadowed them; and they dreaded (or and they feared), when they entered into the cloud.

³⁵ And a voice was made out of the cloud, and said, This is my dearworthy Son, hear ye him (or listen to him).

³⁶ And while the voice was made, Jesus was found alone. And they were still, and to no man said in those days any of those things, that they had seen, or And they held (their) peace, and said to no man in those days aught of those things that they had seen. (And after the voice was heard, Jesus was there alone. And they were silent, and did not tell anyone in those days, about anything that they had seen.)

³⁷ But it was done in the day (pur)suing, when they came down of the hill, much people met them. (But it was done on the following day, when they came down from the hill, that many people met them.)

³⁸ And lo! a man of the company cried, and said, Master, I beseech thee, behold my son, for I have no more; (And behold! a man among the people cried, and said, Teacher, I beseech thee, look at my son, for I have no other child;)

³⁹ and lo! a spirit taketh him, and suddenly he crieth, and hurtleth him down, and draweth him with foam or with froth, and scarcely he goeth away (before) drawing him all to pieces.

⁴⁰ And I prayed thy disciples, that they should cast him out, and they might not. (And I beseeched thy disciples, that they should throw out the spirit, but they could not do it.)

⁴¹ And Jesus answered and said to them, A! unfaithful generation and wayward (or O unfaithful and wayward generation!), how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring hither thy son.

⁴² And when he came nigh, the devil hurtled him down, and wrenched him. And Jesus blamed the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and yielded him (back) to his father, (or And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, yea, the demon, and healed the child, and gave him back to his father).

⁴³ And all men wondered greatly in the greatness of God. And when all men wondered in all (the) things that he did, he said to his disciples, (And everyone wondered greatly at the greatness of God. And when everyone wondered at all the things that he did, he said to his disciples,)

⁴⁴ Put ye these words in your hearts, for it is to come, that man’s Son be betrayed into the hands of men.

⁴⁵ And they knew not this word, and it was hid before them, that they feeled it not; and they dreaded to ask him of this word. (But they did not know what this meant, and it was hidden to them, so that they could not perceive or understand it; and they feared to ask him about these words.)

⁴⁶ But a thought entered into them, who of them should be (the) greatest.

⁴⁷ And Jesus, seeing the thoughts of the heart(s) of them, (or And Jesus, knowing the thoughts in their hearts), took a child, and setted him beside him;

⁴⁸ and said to them, Whoever receiveth this child in my name, receiveth me; and whoever receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me; for he that is (the) least among you all, is the greatest.

⁴⁹ And John answered and said, Commander, we saw a man casting out fiends in thy name, and we have forbidden him, for he (pur)sueth not thee with us. (And John said, Master, we saw a man throwing out devils and demons in thy name, and we have forbidden him, for he followeth not thee with us.)

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, Do not ye forbid (him), for he that is not against us, is for us.

⁵¹ And it was done, when the days of his taking up were fulfilled (or when it would soon be the day that he would be taken up into heaven), he set fast his face, to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² and sent messengers before his sight. And they went, and entered into a city of Samaritans, to make ready to him (or to prepare it for him).

⁵³ And they received not him, for the face of him was going into Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And when James and John, his disciples, saw (that), they said, Lord, wilt thou that we say, that fire come down from heaven, and waste them, as Elias did? (And when James and John, his disciples, saw that, they said, Lord, desirest thou that we command, that fire come down from heaven, and destroy them, like Elijah did?)

⁵⁵ And he turned, and blamed them (or and rebuked them), and said, Ye know not, whose spirits ye be;

¹⁷ And alle men eeten, and weren fulfillid; and that that lefte to hem of brokun metis was takun vp, twelue cofyns.

¹⁸ And it was don, whanne he was aloone preiynge, hise disciplis weren with hym, and he axide hem, and seide, Whom seien the puple that Y am?

¹⁹ And thei answeriden, and seiden, Joon Baptist, othir seien Elie, and othir seien, o profete of the formere is risun.

²⁰ And he seide to hem, But who seien ye that Y am? Symount Petir answeride, and seide, The Crist of God.

²¹ And he blamynge hem comaundide that thei schulden seie to no man,

²² and seide these thingis, For it bihoueth mannus sone to suffre many thingis, and to be repreued of the elder men, and of the princis of prestis, and of scribis, and to be slayn, and the thridde dai to rise ayen.

²³ And he seide to alle, If ony wole come aftir me, denye he hym silf, and take he his cross euery dai, and sue he me.

²⁴ For he that wole make his lijf saaf schal leese it; and he that leesith his lijf for me, schal make it saaf.

²⁵ And what profitith it to a man, if he wynne al the world, and leese hymsilf, and do peiryng of him silf.

²⁶ For who so schameth me and my wordis, mannus sone schal schame hym, whanne he cometh in his maieste, and of the fadris, and of the hooli aungels.

²⁷ And Y seie to you, verily ther ben summe stondynge here, whiche schulen not taste deeth, til thei seen the rewme of God.

²⁸ And it was don aftir these wordis almest eiyte daies, and he took Petre and James and Joon, and he stiede in to an hil, to preye.

²⁹ And while he preiede, the licnesse of his cheer was chaungid, and his clothing was whit schynynge.

³⁰ And lo! two men spaken with hym,

³¹ and Moises and Helie weren seen in maieste; and thei sayn his goyng out, which he schulde fulfille in Jerusalem.

³² And Petre, and thei that weren with hym, weren heuy of sleep, and thei wakynge saien his majeste, and the twey men that stoden with hym.

³³ And it was don, whanne thei departiden fro hym, Petir seide to Jhesu, Comaundour, it is good that we be here, and make we here thre tabernaclis, oon to thee, and oon to Moises, and oon to Elie. And he wiste not what he schulde seie.

³⁴ But while he spak these thingis, a cloude was maad, and ouerschadewide hem; and thei dredden, whanne thei entriden in to the cloude.

³⁵ And a vois was maad out of the cloude, and seide, This is my derworth sone, here ye hym.

³⁶ And while the vois was maad, Jhesu was foundun aloone. And thei weren stille, and to no man seiden in tho daies ouyt of tho thingis, that thei hadden seyn.

³⁷ But it was doon in the dai suynge, whanne thei camen doun of the hil, myche puple mette hem.

³⁸ And lo! a man of the cumpany criede, and seide, Maister, Y biseche thee, biholde my sone, for Y haue no mo; and lo!

³⁹ a spirit takith hym, and sudenli he crieth, and hurtlith doun, and to-drawith hym with fome, and vnneth he goith awei al to-drawynge hym.

⁴⁰ And Y preiede thi disciplis, that thei schulden caste hym out, and thei myyten not.

⁴¹ And Jhesus answerde and seide to hem, A! vnfeithful generacioun and weiward, hou long schal Y be at you, and suffre you? brynge hidur thi sone.

⁴² And whanne he cam nyy, the deuel hurtlide hym doun, and to-braidide hym. And Jhesus blamyde `the vnclene spirit, and heelide the child, and yeldide him to his fadir.

⁴³ And alle men wondriden greetli in the gretnesse of God. And whanne alle men wondriden in alle thingis that he dide, he seide to hise disciplis,

⁴⁴ Putte ye these wordis in youre hertis, for it is to come, that mannus sone be bitrayed in to the hondis of men.

⁴⁵ And thei knewen not this word, and it was hid bifor hem, that thei feeliden it not; and thei dredden to axe hym of this word.

⁴⁶ But a thouyt entride in to hem, who of hem schulde be grettest.

⁴⁷ And Jhesu, seynge the thouytis of the herte of hem, took a child, and settide hym bisidis hym;

⁴⁸ and seide to hem, Who euer resseyueth this child in my name, resseyueth me; and who euer resseyueth me, resseiueth him that sente me; for he that is leest among you alle, is the grettest.

⁴⁹ And Joon answeride and seide, Comaundoure, we sayn a man castynge out feendis in thi name, and we han forbedun hym, for he sueth not thee with vs.

⁵⁰ And Jhesus seide to hym, Nyle ye forbede, for he that is not ayens vs, is for vs.

⁵¹ And it was don, whanne the daies of his takyng vp weren fulfillid, he settide faste his face, to go to Jerusalem,

⁵² and sente messangeris bifor his siyt. And thei yeden, and entriden in to a citee of Samaritans, to make redi to hym.

⁵³ And thei resseyueden not hym, for the face `was of hym goynge in to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And whanne James and Joon, hise disciplis, seyn, thei seiden, Lord, wolt thou that we seien, that fier come doun fro heuene, and waste hem?

⁵⁵ And he turnede, and blamyde hem, and seide, Ye witen not, whos spiritis ye ben;

¹⁷ and they did eat, and were all filled, and there was taken up what was over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, as he is praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he questioned them, saying, 'Who do the multitudes say me to be?'

¹⁹ And they answering said, 'John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen;'

²⁰ and he said to them, 'And ye — who do ye say me to be?' and Peter answering said, 'The Christ of God.'

²¹ And having charged them, he commanded them to say this to no one,

²² saying — 'It behoveth the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and the third day to be raised.'

²³ And he said unto all, 'If any one doth will to come after me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me;

²⁴ for whoever may will to save his life, shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for my sake, he shall save it;

²⁵ for what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, and having lost or having forfeited himself?

²⁶ 'For whoever may be ashamed of me, and of my words, of this one shall the Son of Man be ashamed, when he may come in his glory, and the Father's, and the holy messengers';

²⁷ and I say to you, truly, there are certain of those here standing, who shall not taste of death till they may see the reign of God.'

²⁸ And it came to pass, after these words, as it were eight days, that having taken Peter, and John, and James, he went up to the mountain to pray,

²⁹ and it came to pass, in his praying, the appearance of his face became altered, and his garment white — sparkling.

³⁰ And lo, two men were speaking together with him, who were Moses and Elijah,

³¹ who having appeared in glory, spake of his outgoing that he was about to fulfil in Jerusalem,

³² but Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep, and having waked, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him.

³³ And it came to pass, in their parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, 'Master, it is good to us to be here; and we may make three booths, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,' not knowing what he saith:

³⁴ and as he was speaking these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, and they feared in their entering into the cloud,

³⁵ and a voice came out of the cloud saying, 'This is My Son — the Beloved; hear ye him;'

³⁶ and when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone; and they were silent, and declared to no one in those days anything of what they have seen.

³⁷ And it came to pass on the next day, they having come down from the mount, there met him a great multitude,

³⁸ and lo, a man from the multitude cried out, saying, 'Teacher, I beseech thee, look upon my son, because he is my only begotten;

³⁹ and lo, a spirit doth take him, and suddenly he doth cry out, and it teareth him, with foaming, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him,

⁴⁰ and I besought thy disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.'

⁴¹ And Jesus answering said, 'O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring near hither thy son;'

⁴² and as he is yet coming near, the demon rent him, and tore him sore, and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the youth, and gave him back to his father.

⁴³ And they were all amazed at the greatness of God, and while all are wondering at all things that Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

⁴⁴ 'Lay ye to your ears these words, for the Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men.'

⁴⁵ And they were not knowing this saying, and it was veiled from them, that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

⁴⁶ And there entered a reasoning among them, this, Who may be greater of them?

⁴⁷ and Jesus having seen the reasoning of their heart, having taken hold of a child, set him beside himself,

⁴⁸ and said to them, 'Whoever may receive this child in my name, doth receive me, and whoever may receive me, doth receive Him who sent me, for he who is least among you all — he shall be great.'

⁴⁹ And John answering said, 'Master, we saw a certain one in thy name casting forth the demons, and we forbade him, because he doth not follow with us;'

⁵⁰ and Jesus said unto him, 'Forbid not, for he who is not against us, is for us.'

⁵¹ And it came to pass, in the completing of the days of his being taken up, that he fixed his face to go on to Jerusalem,

⁵² and he sent messengers before his face, and having gone on, they went into a village of Samaritans, to make ready for him,

⁵³ and they did not receive him, because his face was going on to Jerusalem.

⁵⁴ And his disciples James and John having seen, said, 'Sir, wilt thou that we may command fire to come down from the heaven, and to consume them, as also Elijah did?'

⁵⁵ and having turned, he rebuked them, and said, 'Ye have not known of what spirit ye are;
