¹ After he had ended all his sayings in the ears of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

² And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and at the point of death.

³ And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant.

⁴ And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him;

⁵ for he loveth our nation, and himself built us our synagogue.

⁶ And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:

⁷ wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

⁹ And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

¹⁰ And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole.

¹¹ And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went to a city called Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude.

¹² Now when he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

¹³ And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

¹⁴ And he came nigh and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

¹⁵ And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God hath visited his people.

¹⁷ And this report went forth concerning him in the whole of Judæa, and all the region round about.

¹⁸ And the disciples of John told him of all these things.

¹⁹ And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to the Lord, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?

²⁰ And when the men were come unto him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?

²¹ In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.

²² And he answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good tidings preached to them.

²³ And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind?

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁸ I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there is none greater than John: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²⁹ And all the people when they heard, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him.

³¹ Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation, and to what are they like?

³² They are like unto children that sit in the marketplace, and call one to another; who say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not weep.

³³ For John the Baptist is come eating no bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon.

³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

³⁵ And wisdom is justified of all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he entered into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.

³⁷ And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she knew that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster cruse of ointment,

³⁸ and standing behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee that had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner.

⁴⁰ And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Teacher, say on.

⁴¹ A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred shillings, and the other fifty.

⁴² When they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?

⁴³ Simon answered and said, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

¹ After Jesus finished saying this to the people, he went with his disciples to Capernaum town.

² There was a Roman army officer there who had a slave whom he thought highly of. This slave was so sick that he was about to die.

³ When the officer heard about Jesus, he summoned some Jewish elders. He told them to go to Jesus and ask him to come and heal his slave.

⁴ When they came to where Jesus was, they earnestly asked Jesus to return with them. They said, “This officer deserves that you (sg) do this for him,

⁵ because he loves us Jewish people, and he paid the money to build a synagogue for us.”

⁶ So Jesus went with them. When he was near the officer's house, the officer decided that it was not necessary for Jesus to come to his house. So he summoned some friends. He told them to go to Jesus and tell him this: “Lord/Sir, do not bother to come. Because I am a non-Jew, I am not worthy for you (sg), a Jew, to come into my house MTY and associate with me.

⁷ I did not feel worthy to come to you, either. But please command that my servant be healed, and he will become well!

⁸ I believe this because, as for me, there are people who have authority over me and I obey them. I also have soldiers under my authority. When I say to one of them, ‘Go!’ he goes. When I say to another ‘Come!’ he comes. When I say to my slave, ‘Do this!’ he does it. And I believe that you speak with a similar kind of authority.”

⁹ When the officer's friends arrived and told that to Jesus, he marveled at what the officer had said. Then he turned and said to the crowd that was going with him, “I tell you, I have never before found anyone who trusted in me like this non-Jewish man does. No one from Israel, where I would expect people to believe in me, has trusted in me like he has!”

¹⁰ When those men returned to the officer's house, they found that the slave was well.

¹¹ Soon after that, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd of other people went with him.

¹² As they approached the town gate, the corpse of a young man who had just died was being carried out on a stretcher { people were carrying out on a stretcher the corpse of a young man who had just died}. His mother was a widow, and he was her only son. A large group of people from the town were accompanying them.

¹³ When the Lord saw her, he pitied her. He said to her, “Do not cry!”

¹⁴ Then, ignoring the Jewish laws about not coming near a corpse, he came close and touched the stretcher on which the body was lying. So the men carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”

¹⁵ The man sat up and began to talk! Jesus returned him to his mother to care for her.

¹⁶ Then everyone there was amazed/awestruck. They praised God, saying, “A great prophet has come among us!” They also said, “God has come to help his people!”

¹⁷ Then they reported what Jesus had done throughout all of Judea district and other nearby areas.

¹⁸ The disciples of John the Baptizer went to the prison where John was and told him about those things.

¹⁹ So one day John summoned two of his disciples and told them to go to the Lord and ask him: “Are you the Messiah who the prophets prophesied would come, or is it someone else that we should expect to come?”

²⁰ When those two men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptizer sent us to ask you (sg) this: Are you the Messiah that we are expecting God to send, or shall we (exc) expect someone else?”

²¹ At that very time Jesus was healing many people of their diseases and other sicknesses, he was casting out evil spirits, and he was causing many blind people to be able to see.

²² So he answered those two men, “Go back and report to John what you have seen me doing and what you have heard me telling people. I am enabling blind people to see. I am enabling lame people to walk. I am healing people who have leprosy. I am enabling deaf people to hear. I am causing dead people to become alive again, and I am telling God's good message to poor people.

²³ Also tell John that God is pleased with those who do not stop believing in me because what I do is not what they expect the Messiah to do.”

²⁴ When the men whom John had sent left, Jesus began to talk to the crowd of people about John. He said to them, “ Think about what sort of person you went to see in the desolate area when you went there to see John RHQ. You did not go there to listen to a man who constantly changed the nature of his message MET, like a reed that is blown back and forth by the wind RHQ.

²⁵ Then what kind of man did you go there to see RHQ? Was he RHQ a man who wore expensive clothes? No! You know very well that people who wear beautiful clothes and live in luxury are in kings' palaces, not in the desolate areas!

²⁶ Then what kind of person did you go to see? Did you RHQ go there to see John because he was a prophet? Yes! But I will tell you that John is more important than an ordinary prophet.

²⁷ He is the one about whom these words that God said to the Messiah have been written { the prophet Malachi wrote these words} in the Scriptures: ‘Listen! I am going to send my messenger ahead of you (sg) SYN. He will prepare people for your coming.’

²⁸ I tell you that from among all the people who have ever lived, God considers that no one is greater than John. However, God considers everyone who has let God rule their lives MET to be greater than John, even if they are insignificant people.”

²⁹ When they heard what Jesus said (OR, what John preached), all the people, including tax collectors, whom many people despised, agreed that God's way was right. By being baptized by John {By letting John baptize them}, they had agreed that what God required people to do in order to be saved was right.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the men who taught the Jewish laws were not baptized by John {did not let John baptize them} because they rejected what God wanted them to do.

³¹ Then Jesus also said, “ Many of you people have heard what John and I have taught. ◄I will illustrate what you are like./Do you know what many of you people who have heard what John and I have taught are like?► RHQ

³² You are like children who are playing games in an open area. Some of them are calling to the others, saying, ‘We (exc) played happy music for you on the flute, but you did not dance! Then we sang sad funeral songs for you, but you did not cry!’

³³ Similarly, you people are dissatisfied with both John the Baptizer and me! When John came and preached to you, he did not eat ordinary food SYN or drink wine, like most people do. But you rejected him, saying, ‘A demon is controlling him!’

³⁴ In contrast, I, the one who came from heaven, eat the same food and drink wine as others do. But you reject me, saying, ‘Look! This man eats too much food and drinks too much wine, and he associates with tax collectors and other sinners!’

³⁵ But those who are truly God's children PRS realize that what John and I do is truly wise.”

³⁶ One day one of the Pharisees named Simon invited Jesus to eat a meal with him. So Jesus went to the man's house and reclined to eat.

³⁷ There was a woman in that city who many people knew had been a prostitute EUP. She heard that Jesus was eating in the Pharisee's house. So she went there, taking a stone jar that contained perfume.

³⁸ As the people there were reclining to eat, the woman stood behind Jesus, at his feet. As she was crying because she was sorry for her sins, her tears fell on Jesus' feet. Then she wiped his feet with her hair, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the perfume.

³⁹ When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw that, he thought, “ Prophets know about other people's lives, so if Jesus were a prophet, he would have known who this woman is who is touching him, and what kind of a person she is. He would have known that she is a prostitute! EUP”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to him, “Simon, there is something I want to tell you (sg).” He replied, “Teacher, what is it?”

⁴¹ Jesus replied, “Two people owed some money to a man who earned money by lending it to others. One owed him five hundred silver coins, and the other owed him fifty silver coins.

⁴² Neither of them was able to pay back what he owed, so the man very kindly said that they did not have to pay back anything. So, which of those two men will love that man more?”

⁴³ Simon replied, “I think that the one who owed the most money and did not have to pay it back will love him more.” Jesus said to him, “That is correct.”

⁸ For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

⁹ When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”

³ And when news of Jesus came to his ears, he sent to him rulers of the Jews, requesting that he would come and make his servant well.

⁴ And they, when they came to Jesus, made their request warmly, saying,

⁵ It is right for you to do this for him, because he is a friend to our nation, and himself has put up a Synagogue for us.

⁶ And Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the man sent friends to him, saying, Lord, do not give yourself trouble: for I am not important enough for you to come into my house:

⁷ And I had the feeling that I was not even good enough to come to you: but say the word only, and my servant will be well.

⁸ For I, myself, am a man under authority, having men under me; and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.

⁹ And when these things were said to Jesus, he was surprised, and, turning to the mass of people coming after him, said, I have not seen such great faith, no, not in Israel.

¹⁰ And when those who were sent came back to the house they saw that the servant was well.

¹¹ And it came about, after a little time, that he went to a town named Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great number of people.

¹² Now when he came near the door of the town, a dead man was being taken out, the only son of his mother, who was a widow: and a great number of people from the town were with her.

¹³ And when the Lord saw her, he had pity on her and said to her, Be not sad.

¹⁴ And he came near, and put his hand on the stretcher where the dead man was: and those who were moving it came to a stop. And he said, Young man, I say to you, Get up.

¹⁵ And the dead man got up, and words came from his lips. And he gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ And fear came on all, and they gave praise to God, saying, A great prophet is among us: and, God has given thought to his people.

¹⁷ And this story about him went through all Judaea and the places round about.

¹⁹ Then John sent two of his disciples to the Lord, saying, Are you he who is to come, or are we waiting for another?

²⁰ And when the men came to him they said, John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, Are you he who is to come, or are we waiting for another?

²¹ At that time, he made a number of people free from their diseases and their pains, and from evil spirits; and to others who were blind he gave back the use of their eyes.

²² And answering them he said, Go back and give news to John of what you have seen, and the things which have come to your ears; the blind now see, those who had no power in their legs are walking, lepers are made clean, those who had no hearing now have their ears open, dead men come to life again, and the poor have the good news given to them.

²³ And a blessing will be on him who has no doubts about me.

²⁴ And when the men who were sent by John had gone away, he said to the people, about John, What did you go out into the waste land to see? a tall stem moving in the wind?

²⁵ But what did you go out to see? a man in soft clothing? See now, those who have beautiful clothing and delicate food are in kings' houses.

²⁶ But what did you go out to see? a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he of whom it has been said, See, I send my servant before your face, who will make ready your way before you.

²⁸ I say to you, Among all the sons of women, not one is greater than John: but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²⁹ (And all the people, and the tax-farmers, to whom John had given baptism, when they had knowledge of these things, gave glory to God.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were against the purpose of God for themselves, not having had his baptism.)

³¹ What comparison am I to make of the men of this generation? what are they like?

³² They are like children who are seated in the market-place, crying out to one another, and saying, We made music for you, but you did not take part in the dance; we gave cries of sorrow, but you were not sad.

³³ For John the Baptist came, taking no food or drink, and you say, He has an evil spirit.

³⁴ The Son of man came feasting, and you say, Here is a lover of food and wine, a friend of tax-farmers and sinners.

³⁵ But wisdom is judged to be right by all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharisees made a request that he would take a meal with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house and took his seat at the table.

³⁷ And there was a woman in the town who was a sinner; and when she had news that he was a guest in the Pharisee's house, she took a bottle of perfume,

³⁸ And went in and took her place at the back of him, near his feet, weeping, so that his feet were washed with the drops from her eyes, and with her hair she made them dry, and kissing his feet she put the perfume on them.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee in whose house he was saw it, he said to himself, This man, if he was a prophet, would be conscious what sort of woman this is who has put her hands on him, that she is a sinner.

⁴⁰ And Jesus, answering, said, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he said, Master, say on.

⁴¹ And he said, Two men were in debt to a certain man of business: one had a debt of five hundred pence, and the other of fifty.

⁴² When they were unable to make payment, he made the two of them free of their debts. Which of them, now, will have the greater love for him?

⁴³ Simon, in answer, said, It seems he whose debt was greater. And he said, Your decision is right.

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in delicate garments? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and live luxuriously are in the courts of kings.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and what is more excellent than a prophet.

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the lawyers rendered null as to themselves the counsel of God, not having been baptised by him.)

³⁸ and standing at his feet behind him weeping, began to wash his feet with tears; and she wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the myrrh.

³⁹ And the Pharisee who had invited him, seeing it, spoke with himself saying, This person if he were a prophet would have known who and what the woman is who touches him, for she is a sinner.

⁴⁰ And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he says, Teacher, say it.

⁴¹ There were two debtors of a certain creditor: one owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty;

⁴² but as they had nothing to pay, he forgave both of them their debt: say, which of them therefore will love him most?

⁴³ And Simon answering said, I suppose he to whom he forgave the most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged.

¹ And when he had finished all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capharnaum.

² And the servant of a certain centurion, who was dear to him, being sick, was ready to die.

³ And when he had heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the ancients of the Jews, desiring him to come and heal his servant.

⁴ And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying to him: He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him.

⁵ For he loveth our nation; and he hath built us a synagogue.

⁶ And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent his friends to him, saying: Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof.

⁷ For which cause neither did I think myself worthy to come to thee; but say the word, and my servant shall be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers: and I say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth it.

⁹ Which Jesus hearing, marvelled: and turning about to the multitude that followed him, he said: Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith, not even in Israel.

¹⁰ And they who were sent, being returned to the house, found the servant whole who had been sick.

¹¹ And it came to pass afterwards, that he went into a city that is called Naim; and there went with him his disciples, and a great multitude.

¹² And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow: and a great multitude of the city was with her.

¹³ Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her: Weep not.

¹⁴ And he came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it, stood still. And he said: Young man, I say to thee, arise.

¹⁵ And he that was dead, sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ And there came a fear on them all: and they glorified God, saying: A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people.

¹⁷ And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the country round about.

¹⁸ And John’s disciples told him of all these things.

¹⁹ And John called to him two of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, saying: Art thou he that art to come; or look we for another?

²⁰ And when the men were come unto him, they said: John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying: Art thou he that art to come; or look we for another?

²¹ (And in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases, and hurts, and evil spirits: and to many that were blind he gave sight.)

²² And answering, he said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, to the poor the gospel is preached:

²³ And blessed is he whosoever shall not be scandalized in me.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak to the multitudes concerning John. What went ye out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind?

²⁵ But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are in costly apparel and live delicately, are in the houses of kings.

²⁶ But what went you out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁸ For I say to you: Amongst those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet that John the Baptist. But he that is the lesser in the kingdom of God, is greater than he.

²⁹ And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John’s baptism.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him.

³¹ And the Lord said: Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

³² They are like to children sitting in the marketplace, and speaking one to another, and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept.

³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say: He hath a devil.

³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking: and you say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners.

³⁵ And wisdom is justified by all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and sat down to meat.

³⁷ And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that he sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment;

³⁸ And standing behind at his feet, she began to wash his feet, with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ And the Pharisee, who had invited him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner.

⁵ for he loves our nation, and he himself has built us a synagogue.”

⁶ Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far away from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof.

⁷ Therefore I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant shall be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

¹¹ Now it happened on the next day, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a great crowd.

¹² And when He came near the gate of the city, that behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And many people from the city was with her.

¹³ When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”

¹⁴ Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

¹⁵ So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ Then fear took hold of all, and they were glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.”

¹⁷ And this report about Him went out in all Judea, and all the surrounding region.

¹⁸ Then the disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things.

¹⁹ And summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”

²⁰ And when they came to Him, the men said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ”

²¹ And in that very hour He healed many from diseases, and torments, and evil spirits; and to many blind people He granted sight.

²² Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: that the blind regain sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.

²³ And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

²⁴ Now when John's messengers had departed, He began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What have you gone out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

²⁵ But what have you gone out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are in royal palaces.

²⁶ But what have you gone out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he about whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’

²⁸ For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

²⁹ And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, because they had not been baptized by him.

³¹ “Therefore to what shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?

³² They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; We mourned for you, and you did not weep.’

³³ For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

³⁵ And so wisdom is justified by all her children.”

³⁶ Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And entering into the Pharisee's house, He reclined to eat.

³⁷ And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she found out that He was reclining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfume,

³⁸ and standing by His feet behind Him weeping; she began to wash His feet with her tears, and was wiping them with the hair of her head; and she was kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke within himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what sort of woman this is who touches Him, for she is a sinner.”

⁴⁰ And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say it.”

⁴¹ “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other owed fifty.

⁴² And when they had nothing with which to pay back, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

⁴³ Simon answered and said, “I suppose it is the one to whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”

¹ Now when He concluded all His sayings in the hearing of the people, He entered Capernaum.

² Well a certain centurion's slave, who was valuable to him, was sick and about to die.

³ So when he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him to come and rescue his slave.

⁴ And when they came to Jesus they started pleading earnestly with Him, saying that the one for whom He would do this was worthy,

⁵ “Because he loves our nation, and he himself built our synagogue.”

⁶ So Jesus went with them. But when He was no longer far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him: “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come under my roof.

⁷ In fact I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. Just say a word and my servant will be healed;

⁸ because I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. I say to one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does.”

⁹ Well upon hearing these things Jesus marveled at him, and turning to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!”

¹⁰ When those who were sent returned to the house they found that the slave who had been sick was well.

¹¹ Now it happened on the next day that He went to a town called Nain, and many of His disciples went with Him, also a large crowd.

¹² But as He approached the town gate, mercy, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; a large crowd from the town was with her.

¹³ When the Lord saw her He had compassion on her and said to her, “Don't cry!”

¹⁴ And advancing He took hold of the bier and the bearers stood still. Then He said, “Young man, to you I say, get up!”

¹⁵ So the dead man sat up and began to talk! Yes, He gave him back to his mother.

¹⁶ Fear took hold of all, and they began glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited His people!”

³⁹ Now as the Pharisee who had invited Him observed this, he was saying to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him, including what sort of woman she is—because she is a sinner!”

⁴⁰ So Jesus reacted by saying to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say on.”

⁴¹ “A certain creditor had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

⁴² And when they had no way to repay, he freely forgave them both. Now tell me, which of them will love him more?”

⁴³ So Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one to whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”

¹ When he'd finished speaking to the people, Jesus left for Capernaum.

² A centurion lived there who had a servant he greatly valued who was sick and was about to die.

³ When he heard about Jesus, the centurion sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.

⁴ When the elders came to Jesus, they pleaded with him strongly, saying, “Please come and do what he asks. He deserves your help,

⁵ because he loves our people and he built a synagogue for us.”

⁶ Jesus went with them and as they approached the house, the centurion sent some friends to Jesus to tell him, “Lord, please don't trouble yourself by coming into my house, because I'm not worthy of that.

⁷ I didn't even think that I was worthy to come and see you. Just give the command, and my servant will be healed.

⁸ For I'm under the authority of my superior officers, and I have soldiers under my authority too. I command one to go and he goes, another to come and he comes. I command my servant to do something and he does it.”

⁹ When Jesus heard this he was astounded. He turned to the crowd that was following him, and said, “I tell you, I haven't found trust like this even in Israel.”

¹⁰ Then the centurion's friends returned to the house and found the servant in good health.

¹¹ Soon after Jesus went to a town called Nain, accompanied by his disciples and a large crowd.

¹² As he approached the town gate a funeral procession was coming the other way. The man who had died was the only son of a widow, and a sizeable crowd from the town was with her.

¹³ When the Lord saw her he was filled with compassion for her. “Don't cry,” he told her.

¹⁴ Jesus went over to the coffin and touched it, and the pall-bearers stopped. Jesus said, “Young man, I tell you, get up.”

¹⁵ The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

¹⁶ A sense of awe filled everyone there and they praised God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us,” and “God has visited his people.”

¹⁷ News about Jesus spread throughout Judea, and all around.

¹⁸ The disciples of John told John about all this.

¹⁹ John called two of his disciples and told them to go and see Jesus, and ask, “Are you the one we've been expecting, or should we wait for someone else?”

²⁰ When they came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you, to ask you, ‘Are you the one we've been expecting or should we wait for someone else?’”

²¹ At that very moment Jesus was healing many people of their diseases, illnesses, evil spirits, and making the blind to see.

²² Jesus answered John's disciples, “Go and tell John what you've seen and heard. The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers cured, the deaf hear, the dead raised back to life, the poor are told the good news.

²³ How good it is for those who are not offended because of me!”

²⁴ After the messengers from John had left, Jesus began telling the crowd, “About John: what did you expect to see when you went out to meet him in the desert? Some reed blown about by the wind?

²⁵ Did you come looking for a man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who have stylish clothes and live in luxury are found in palaces.

²⁶ Were you looking for a prophet? Yes he is, and I'm telling you, he's much more than a prophet.

²⁷ It was written about him in Scripture: ‘Look, I'm sending my messenger to go before you to prepare your way.’

²⁸ I tell you, no one born of women is greater than John, but even the most unimportant person in God's kingdom is greater than he is!”

²⁹ When they heard this, all of them—even the tax collectors—followed what God said was good and right, for they had been baptized by John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the religious teachers rejected what God wanted them to do, for they had refused to be baptized by John.

³¹ “What shall I compare these people to?” asked Jesus. “What are they like?

³² They're like children sitting in the market who tell one other, ‘We played the flute for you but you didn't dance; we sang sad songs but you didn't cry.’

³³ When John the Baptist came he didn't eat bread or drink wine, but you say he's demon-possessed.

³⁴ Now the Son of man is here, and eats and drinks with people, but you say, ‘Look, he spends his time eating too much food and drinking too much wine. Plus he's a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’

³⁵ However, God's wise ways are proved right by all who follow him!”

³⁶ One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to come and eat with him. Jesus went to the Pharisee's house and sat down to the meal.

³⁷ A woman who was a sinner in that town found out that Jesus was eating in the Pharisee's house. She went there, carrying an alabaster jar of perfume.

³⁸ She kneeled beside Jesus and with her tears wet his feet, and dried them with her hair. She kissed his feet, and then she poured the perfume over them.

³⁹ When the Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this he said to himself, “If this man was really a prophet he would know who this woman was who's touching him, and what kind of person she was—that she's a sinner!”

⁴⁰ Jesus spoke up and said, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, Teacher,” he responded.

⁴¹ “Once two people were in debt to a money-lender. One owed five hundred denarii, the other only fifty.

⁴² Neither of them could repay him, so he forgave the debts. Which one will love him the most?”

⁴³ “The one he forgave the most, I would think,” Simon answered. “You're absolutely right,” said Jesus.

¹ When hee had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entred into Capernaum.

² And a certaine Ceturions seruant was sicke and readie to die, which was deare vnto him.

³ And when he heard of Iesus, hee sent vnto him the Elders of the Iewes, beseeching him that he would come, and heale his seruant.

⁴ So they came to Iesus, and besought him instantly, saying that hee was worthy that hee should doe this for him:

⁵ For he loueth, said they, our nation, and he hath built vs a Synagogue.

⁶ Then Iesus went with them: but when he was now not farre from the house, the Centurion sent friendes to him, saying vnto him, Lord, trouble not thy selfe: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter vnder my roofe:

⁷ Wherefore I thought not my selfe worthy to come vnto thee: but say the word, and my seruant shalbe whole:

⁸ For I likewise am a man set vnder authoritie, and haue vnder mee souldiers, and I say vnto one, Goe, and he goeth: and to another, Come, and hee commeth: and to my seruant, Doe this, and he doeth it.

⁹ When Iesus heard these things, he marueiled at him, and turned him, and said to the people, that followed him, I say vnto you, I haue not found so great faith, no not in Israel.

¹¹ And it came to passe the day after, that he went into a citie called Nain, and many of his disciples went with him, and a great multitude.

¹² Nowe when hee came neere to the gate of the citie, behold, there was a dead man caried out, who was the onely begotten sonne of his mother, which was a widowe, and much people of the citie was with her.

¹³ And when the Lord sawe her, he had compassion on her, and said vnto her, Weepe not.

²⁰ And when the men were come vnto him, they said, Iohn Baptist hath sent vs vnto thee, saying, Art thou hee that should come, or shall we waite for another?

²¹ And at that time, he cured many of their sickenesses, and plagues, and of euill spirites, and vnto many blinde men he gaue sight freely.

²² And Iesus answered, and saide vnto them, Goe your wayes and shewe Iohn, what things ye haue seene and heard: that the blinde see, the halt goe, the lepers are cleansed, the deafe heare, the dead are raised, and the poore receiue the Gospel.

²³ And blessed is hee, that shall not be offended in me.

²⁴ And when the messengers of Iohn were departed, hee began to speake vnto the people, of Iohn, What went ye out into the wildernes to see? A reede shaken with the winde?

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft rayment? beholde, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and liue delicately, are in Kings courtes.

²⁶ But what went ye foorth to see? A Prophet? yea, I say to you, and greater then a Prophet.

²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, Beholde, I sende my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁸ For I say vnto you, there is no greater Prophet then Iohn, among them that are begotten of women: neuerthelesse, hee that is the least in the kingdome of God, is greater then he.

²⁹ Then all the people that heard, and the Publicanes iustified God, being baptized with the baptisme of Iohn.

³⁰ But the Pharises and the expounders of the Law despised the counsell of God against themselues, and were not baptized of him.

³¹ And the Lord saide, Whereunto shall I liken the men of this generation? and what thing are they like vnto?

³² They are like vnto litle children sitting in the market place, and crying one to another, and saying, We haue piped vnto you, and ye haue not daunced: we haue mourned to you, and ye haue not wept.

³³ For Iohn Baptist came, neither eating bread, nor drinking wine: and ye say, He hath the deuil.

³⁴ The Sonne of man is come, and eateth and drinketh: and ye say, Beholde, a man which is a glutton, and a drinker of wine, a friend of Publicanes and sinners:

³⁵ But wisdome is iustified of all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharises desired him that hee would eate with him: and hee went into the Pharises house, and sate downe at table.

³⁷ And beholde, a woman in the citie, which was a sinner, when she knewe that Iesus sate at table in the Pharises house, shee brought a boxe of oyntment.

³⁸ And shee stoode at his feete behinde him weeping, and began to wash his feete with teares, and did wipe them with the heares of her head, and kissed his feete, and anoynted them with the oyntment.

³⁹ Nowe when the Pharise which bade him, saw it, he spake within himselfe, saying, If this man were a Prophet, hee woulde surely haue knowen who, and what maner of woman this is which toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

⁴⁰ And Iesus answered, and saide vnto him, Simon, I haue somewhat to say vnto thee. And he said, Master, say on.

⁴¹ There was a certaine lender which had two detters: the one ought fiue hundreth pence, and the other fiftie:

⁴² When they had nothing to pay, he forgaue them both: Which of them therefore, tell mee, will loue him most?

⁴³ Simon answered, and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgaue most. And he said vnto him, Thou hast truely iudged.

⁴ And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

⁵ for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

⁶ Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

⁷ wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

⁹ When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

¹¹ And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

¹² Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

¹³ And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

¹⁴ And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

¹⁵ And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

¹⁶ And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

¹⁷ And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the region round about.

¹⁸ And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

¹⁹ And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

²⁰ When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

²¹ And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

²² Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

²³ And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

²⁵ But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.

²⁶ But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁸ For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²⁹ And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

³¹ And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

³² They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.

³⁵ But wisdom is justified of all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.

³⁷ And behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

³⁸ and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

⁴ When they found Jesus, they earnestly implored him to do so. “He deserves the favour from you,” they said,

⁵ “For he is devoted to our nation, and himself built our synagogue for us.”

⁶ So Jesus went with them. But, when he was no great distance from the house, the captain sent some friends with the message — “Do not trouble yourself, Sir; for I am unworthy to receive you under my roof.

⁷ That was why I did not even venture to come to you myself; but speak, and let my manservant be cured.

⁸ For I myself am a man under the orders of others, with soldiers under me; and if I say to one of them ‘Go,’ he goes, and to another ‘Come,’ he comes, and to my slave ‘Do this,’ he does it.”

⁹ Jesus was surprised to hear these words from him; and, turning to the crowd which was following him, he said, “I tell you, nowhere in Israel have I met with such faith as this!”

¹¹ Shortly after, Jesus went to a town called Nain, his disciples and a great crowd going with him.

¹² Just as he approached the gate of the town, there was a dead man being carried out for burial — an only son, and his mother was a widow. A large number of the people of the town were with her.

¹³ When he saw her, the Master was moved with compassion for her, and he said to her, “Do not weep.”

¹⁴ Then he went up and touched the bier, and the bearers stopped; and Jesus said, “Young man, I am speaking to you — Rise!”

¹⁵ The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus restored him to his mother.

¹⁶ Everyone was awe-struck and began praising God. “A great prophet has arisen amongst us,” they said; “and God has visited his people.”

¹⁷ And this story about Jesus spread all through Judea, and in the neighbouring countries as well.

¹⁸ All these events were reported to John by his disciples.

¹⁹ So he summoned two of them, and sent them to the Master to ask — “Are you ‘the coming one,’ or are we to look for someone else?”

²⁰ When these men found Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask — Are you ‘the coming one,’ or are we to look for somebody else?”

²¹ At that very time Jesus had cured many people of diseases, afflictions, and wicked spirits, and had given many blind people their sight.

²² So his answer to the question was, “Go and report to John what you have witnessed and heard — the blind recover their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are made clean, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, the good news is told to the poor.

²³ And blessed is the person who finds no hindrance in me.”

²⁴ When John's messengers had left, Jesus, speaking to the crowds, began to say with reference to John,

²⁵ “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed waving in the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in rich clothing? Why, those who are accustomed to fine clothes and luxury live in royal palaces.

²⁶ What then did you go to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and far more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is the man of whom scripture says — ‘I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’

²⁸ There is, I tell you, no one born of a woman who is greater than John; and yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

²⁹ (All the people, when they heard this, and even the tax-gatherers, having accepted John's baptism, acknowledged the justice of God.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the students of the Law, having rejected John's baptism, frustrated God's purpose in regard to them.)

³¹ “To what then,” Jesus continued, “should I compare the people of the present generation? What are they like?

³² They are like some little children who are sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another — ‘We have played the flute for you, but you have not danced; We have wailed, but you have not wept!’

³³ For now that John the Baptist has come, not eating bread or drinking wine, you are saying ‘He has a demon in him’;

³⁴ and now that the Son of Man has come, eating and drinking, you are saying ‘Here is a glutton and a wine-drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and outcasts.’

³⁵ And yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.”

¹⁷ This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea Praise, and in all the surrounding region.

¹⁸ The disciples of John Yah is gracious told him about all these things.

¹⁹ John Yah is gracious, calling to himself two of his disciples, sent them to Yeshua Salvation, saying, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?”

²⁰ When the men had come to him, they said, “John Yah is gracious the Immerser has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?’”

³⁷ Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee Separated’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of ointment.

³⁸ Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee Separated who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.”

⁴⁰ Yeshua Salvation answered him, “Simeon Hearing, I have something to tell you.” He said, “Teacher, say on.”

⁴¹ “A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii (500 days wages), and the other fifty denarii (50 days wages).

⁴² When they couldn’t pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will show agapao ·total devotion love· to him most?”

⁴³ Simeon Hearing answered, “He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most.” He said to him, “You have judged correctly.”

¹¹ Jesus and his followers went to a town called Nain. A big mob of other people went with him.

¹² Just before that, a young man in that town died. He was the only son of his mother, and her husband was already dead, so she had nobody left to look after her. That mother, and a big mob of people, were taking him out of the town on a stretcher, to bury him. And at that same time, Jesus was going into the town on the same road.

¹³ Jesus saw the mother, and he felt very sorry for her. He told her, “Don’t cry.”

¹⁴ Then he walked over to the stretcher and touched it, and the men that were carrying it stopped. Jesus said, “Young man, listen to me. Get up.”

¹⁵ Then the dead boy sat up and started to talk. And Jesus told him to go back to his mother.

¹⁶ Everyone that saw this was frightened. They said, “God is really great and powerful. One of his men has come to us to tell us his word and show us his power. God has come to help his people.”

¹⁷ Then went and told lots of other people what they saw, so people everywhere in Judea country heard that story.

³⁶ One of the Jewish law men asked Jesus to eat dinner with him. He belonged to the mob called Pharisees. Jesus went to his house and sat down at the table.

³⁷ There was a woman in that town that used to do bad things. She heard that Jesus was eating dinner with that man, so she got a pretty jar of special oil and went to his house. That oil had a really good smell, and it cost a lot of money.

³⁸ Then she went inside and stood behind Jesus. She was crying and her tears fell on his feet. Then she dried his feet with her hair, and she kissed them, then she poured all that special oil on to his feet.

³⁹ The Jewish law man saw her do that and he said to himself, “I knew it. This man is not one of God’s men. He is letting a bad woman touch him. I reckon he doesn’t know she did a lot of bad things, so I reckon he doesn’t have God’s power.”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to him, “Simon, I want to tell you something.” Simon said, “All right, Teacher, tell me.”

⁴¹ Then Jesus told him a picture story, he said, “There was a rich man that used to lend money to people. He lent one man $500, and he lent another man $50.

⁴² But both of those men had bad luck and lost all their money. They couldn’t pay that money back to the rich man. But the rich man was good to both of them and told them, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll let it go. You don’t have to pay me that money.’ Well, Simon, what do you reckon? Which one of those men will love that rich man the most?”

⁴³ Simon said, “I reckon it is the man that owed him the most money, and didn’t have to pay it back.” Jesus said, “You are right.”

¹ When he had ended all his sainges in the audience of the people he entred into Capernaum.

² And a certayne Centurions seruaunte was sicke and redy to dye whom he made moche of.

³ And when he hearde of Iesu he sent vnto him the elders of the Iewes besechinge him that he wolde come and heale his servaunt.

⁴ And they came to Iesus and besought him instantly sayinge: He is worthi that thou shuldest do this for him.

⁵ For he loveth oure nacion and hath bilt vs a sinagoge

⁶ And Iesus went with them. And when he was not farre from the housse the Centurion sent frendes to him sayinge vnto him: Lorde trouble not thy silfe: for I am not worthy that thou shuldest enter vnder my roffe.

⁷ Wherfore I thought not my silfe worthy to come vnto the: but saye the worde and my servaunt shalbe whoole.

⁸ For I lyke wyse am a man vnder power and have vnder me soudiers and I saye vnto won goo: and he goeth. And to another come: and he cometh. And to my servaunt do this: and he doeth it.

⁹ When Iesus herde this he merveyled at him and turned him about and sayd to the people that folowed him: I saye vnto you I have not founde so greate faith noo not in Israel.

¹⁰ And they that were sent turned backe home agayne and founde the servaunt that was sicke whoole.

¹¹ And it fortuned after that that he went into a cite called Naim and many of his disciples went with him and moche people.

¹² When he came nye to the gate of the cite: beholde ther was a deed man caried out which was the only sonne of his mother and she was a widowe and moche people of the cite was with her.

¹³ And when the lorde sawe her he had compassion on her and sayde vnto her: wepe not.

¹⁴ And he went and touched the coffyn and they that bare him stode still. And he sayde: Yonge man I saye vnto the aryse.

¹⁵ And the deed sate vp and beganne to speake. And he delyvered him to his mother.

¹⁶ And ther came a feare on the all. And they glorified god sayinge: a greate prophet is rysen amonge vs and god hath visited his people

¹⁷ And this rumor of him wet forthe throughout all Iurie and thorowout all the regions which lye rounde about.

¹⁸ And the disciples of Iohn shewed him of all these thinges.

¹⁹ And Iohn called vnto him .ii. of his disciples and sent the to Iesus sayinge: Arte thou he that shall come: or shall we loke for another?

²⁰ When the men were come vnto him they sayde: Iohn baptiste sent vs vnto ye sayinge: Arte thou he that shall come: or shall we wayte for another?

²¹ And at the same tyme he cured many of their infirmites and plages and of evyll spretes and vnto many that were blynde he gave sight.

²² And Iesus answered and sayd vnto them: Goo youre wayes and shewe Iohn what thinges ye have sene and harde: how that the blynde se the halt goo the lepers are clensed the deafe heare the deed aryse to the poore is the glad tydinges preached

²³ and happy is he that is not offended by me.

²⁴ When the messengers of Iohn were departed he began to speake vnto the people of Iohn What wet ye oute into the wildernes for to se? went ye to se arede shaken with the wynde?

²⁵ But what went ye out for tose? A man clothed in soofte rayment? Beholde they which are gorgeously apparelled and lyve delicatly are in kynges courtes.

²⁶ But what went ye forth to se? A prophete? Ye I saye to you and moare then a prophete.

²⁷ This is he of who it is wrytten: Beholde I sende my messenger before thy face to prepare thy waye before the.

²⁸ For I saye vnto you: a greater prophete then Iohn amonge wemes chyldre is ther none. Neverthelesse one that is lesse in the kyngdo of god is greater the he.

²⁹ And all the people that hearde and the publicans iustified God and were baptised with the baptism of Iohn.

³⁰ But the pharises and scribes despised the counsell of god agaynst them selves and were not baptised of him.

³¹ And the lorde sayd: Wher vnto shall I lyke the men of this generacion and what thinge are they lyke?

³² They are lyke vnto chyldre sittynge in the market place and cryinge one to another and sayinge: We have pyped vnto you and ye have not daunsed: we have mourned to you and ye have not wept.

³³ For Iohn baptist cam nether eatynge breed ner drinkynge wyne and ye saye: he hath the devyll.

³⁴ The sonne of man is come and eateth and drinketh and ye saye: beholde a man which is a glotton and a drinker of wyne a frende of publicans and synners.

³⁵ Yet is wysdome iustified of all her chyldren.

³⁶ And one of the pharises desyred him that he wolde eate with him. And he went into the pharises housse and sate doune to meate.

³⁷ And beholde a woman in that cite which was a synner assone as she knewe that. Iesus sate at meate in the pharises housse she brought an alablaster boxe of oyntment

³⁸ and she stode at his fete behynde him wepynge and beganne to wesshe his fete with teares and dyd wipe the with the heares of her heed and kyssed his fete and anoynted them with oyntment.

³⁹ When the pharise which bade him sawe that he spake with in him sylfe sayinge: If this man were a prophete he wolde surely have knowen who and what maner woman this is which toucheth him for she is a synner.

⁴⁰ And Iesus answered and sayde vnto him: Simon I have some what to saye vnto the. And he sayd master saye on.

⁴¹ There was a certayne lender which had two detters the one ought five hondred pence and the other fyfty.

⁴² When they had nothinge to paye he forgave the boothe. Which of them tell me will love him moost?

⁴³ Simon answered and sayde: I suppose that he to whom he forgave moost. And he sayde vnto him: Thou hast truly iudged.

¹ After Jesus had finished everything he was saying in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.

² Now a centurion had a slave who was highly regarded by him, and he was sick and about to die.

³ When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant.

⁴ When they had come to Jesus, they asked him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him,

⁵ because he loves our nation, and he is the one who built the synagogue for us.”

⁶ So Jesus continued on his way with them. But when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, because I am not worthy for you to come under my roof.

⁷ For this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you, but just say a word and my servant will be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man who is under authority, with soldiers under me. I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another one, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it.”

⁹ When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him said, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”

¹⁰ When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant was well.

¹¹ Soon after that, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him.

¹² As he came near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother (who was a widow), and a rather large crowd from the town was with her.

¹³ When the Lord saw her, he was deeply moved with compassion for her and said to her, “Do not cry.”

¹⁴ Then he went up and touched the wooden frame on which they carried the body, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

¹⁵ The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ Then fear overcame all of them, and they kept praising God, saying, “A great prophet has been raised among us” and “God has looked upon his people.”

¹⁷ This news about Jesus spread throughout the whole of Judea and all the neighboring regions.

¹⁸ John's disciples told him about all these things.

¹⁹ Then John called two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to say, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?”

²⁰ When they had come near to Jesus, the men said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to say, 'Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?'”

²¹ In that hour he healed many people from sicknesses and afflictions and from evil spirits, and to many blind people he gave sight.

²² Jesus answered and said to them, “After you have gone on your way, report to John what you have seen and heard. Blind people are receiving sight, lame people are walking, lepers are being cleansed, deaf people are hearing, people who have died are being raised back to life, and needy people are being told the good news.

²³ The person who does not stop believing in me because of my actions is blessed.”

²⁴ After John's messengers had gone away, Jesus began to say to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

²⁵ But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Look, those who wear expensive clothing and who live in luxury are in kings' palaces.

²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'

²⁸ I say to you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he is.”

²⁹ (When all the people heard this, including the tax collectors, they declared that God is righteous, because they had been baptized with the baptism of John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and the experts in Jewish law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

³¹ “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like?

³² They are like children playing in the marketplace, who sit and call to one another and say, 'We played a flute for you, and you did not dance. We sang a funeral song, and you did not cry.'

³³ For John the Baptist came eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'

³⁴ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, he is a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

³⁵ But wisdom is justified by all her children.”

³⁶ Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. So after Jesus entered into the Pharisee's house, he reclined at the table to eat.

¹⁸ And the disciples of John informed him of all these things.

¹⁹ And John calling two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

²⁰ When the men had come to him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

²¹ And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities, and diseases, and of evil spirits; and to many that were blind he gave sight.

²² Then Jesus answering, said to them, Go, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; that the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

²³ And blessed is he , to whom I shall not be a stumbling block.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to speak to the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they who are gorgeously appareled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he , concerning whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

²⁸ For I say to you, Among those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God, is greater than he.

²⁹ And all the people that heard him , and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him.

³¹ And the Lord said, To what then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

³² They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

³³ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon.

³⁴ The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners.

³⁵ But wisdom is justified by all her children.

³⁶ And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down at table.

³⁷ And behold, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster-box of ointment,

³⁸ And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him, saw it , he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who, and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, for she is a sinner.

⁴⁰ And Jesus answering, said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he saith, Master, speak.

⁴¹ There was a certain creditor, who had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.

⁴² And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

⁴³ Simon answered and said, I suppose that he , to whom he forgave most. And he said to him, Thou hast rightly judged.

² A certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and at the point of death.

³ When he heard about Yeshua, he sent to him Jewish elders, asking him to come and save his servant.

⁴ When they came to Yeshua, they begged him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to do this for him,

⁵ for he loves our nation, and he built our synagogue for us.”

⁶ Yeshua went with them. When he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof.

⁷ Therefore I didn’t even think myself worthy to come to you; but say the word, and my servant will be healed.

⁸ For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

⁹ When Yeshua heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”

¹⁰ Those who were sent, returning to the house, found that the servant who had been sick was well.

¹¹ Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him.

¹² Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, one who was dead was carried out, the only born son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people of the city were with her.

¹³ When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Don’t cry.”

¹⁴ He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!”

¹⁵ He who was dead sat up and began to speak. Then he gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited his people!”

¹⁷ This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region.

³² They are like children who sit in the marketplace and call to one another, saying, ‘We piped to you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned, and you didn’t weep.’

³³ For Yochanan the Immerser came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’

³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’

³⁵ Wisdom is justified by all her children.”

³⁶ One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered into the Pharisee’s house and sat at the table.

³⁷ Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment.

³⁸ Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.”

⁴⁰ Yeshua answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” He said, “Rabbi, say on.”

⁴ And when they came to Jesus, they prayed him busily, and said to him, For he is worthy, that thou grant to him this thing;

⁵ for he loveth our folk, and he builded to us a synagogue.

⁶ And Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent to him friends, and said, Lord, do not thou be travailed, for I am not worthy, that thou enter under my roof;

⁷ for which thing I deemed not myself worthy, that I come to thee; but say thou by word, and my child shall be healed.

⁸ For I am a man ordained under power, and have knights under me; and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another, Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this thing, and he doeth it.

⁹ And when this thing was heard, Jesus wondered; and he turned, and said to the people pursuing him, Truly I say to you, neither or not in Israel I found so great faith.

¹⁰ And they that were sent, turned again home, and found the servant whole, that was sick.

¹¹ And it was done afterward, Jesus went into a city, that is called Nain, and his disciples; and a full great company of people went with him.

¹² And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, lo! the son of a woman that had no more children or an only son of his mother, was borne out dead; and this was a widow; and much people of the city was with her.

¹³ And when the Lord Jesus had seen her, he had ruth or he moved by mercy on her, and said to her, Do not thou weep.

¹⁴ And he came nigh, and touched the bier; and they that bare the bier stood. And he said, Young man, I say to thee, rise up.

¹⁵ And he that was dead sat up again or sat up, and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother.

¹⁶ And dread took all men, and they magnified God, and said, For a great prophet is risen among us, and, For God hath visited his people.

¹⁷ And this word went out of him into all Judea, and into all the country about.

¹⁸ And John’s disciples told him of all these things.

¹⁹ And John called twain of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, and said, Art thou he that is to come, or abide we another?

²⁰ And when the men came to him, they said, John Baptist sent us to thee, and said, Art thou he that is to come, or we abide another?

²¹ And in that hour he healed many men of their sicknesses, and wounds, and of evil spirits; and he gave sight to many blind men.

²² And Jesus answered, and said to them, Go ye again, and tell ye to John those things that ye have heard and seen; blind men see, crooked men go, mesels be made clean, deaf men hear, dead men rise again, poor men be taken to preaching of the gospel.

²³ And he that shall not be caused to stumble in me, is blessed.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were gone forth or had gone away, he began to say of John to the people, What went ye out into desert to see? a reed wagged or waved with the wind?

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? a man clothed with soft clothes? Lo! they that be in a precious cloth, and in delights, be in kings’ houses.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, Lo! I send mine angel before thy face, which shall make ready thy way before thee.

²⁸ Certainly I say to you, there is no man a more prophet among the children of women, than is John Baptist, or among the children of women, no man is more prophet than John Baptist; but he that is less in the kingdom of heavens, is more than he.

²⁹ And all the people hearing, and publicans, that had been baptized with the baptism of John, justified God;

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the wise men of the law, that were not baptized of him, despised the counsel of God against themselves.

³¹ And the Lord said, Therefore to whom shall I say men of this gener-ation like, and to whom be they like?

³² They be like to children sitting in the chapping, and speaking together, and saying, We have sung to you with pipes, and ye have not danced; we have made mourning or lamentation, and ye have not wept.

³³ For John Baptist came, neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a fiend.

³⁴ Man’s Son came eating and drinking, and ye say, Lo! a man a devourer or a glutton, and drinking wine, a friend of publicans, and of sinful men.

³⁵ And wisdom is justified of all her sons.

³⁶ But one of the Pharisees prayed Jesus, that he should eat with him. And he entered into the house of the Pharisee, and sat at the meat.

³⁷ And lo! a sinful woman, that was in the city, as she knew, that Jesus sat at the meat in the house of the Pharisee, she brought an alabaster box of ointment;

³⁸ and she stood behind beside his feet, and began to moist his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed with ointment.

³⁹ And the Pharisee seeing, that had called him, said within himself, saying, If this were a prophet, he should know, who and what manner woman it were or it is that toucheth him, for she is a sinful woman.

⁴⁰ And Jesus answered, and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to thee. And he said, Master, say thou.

⁷ for which thing I deemed not myself worthy, that I come to thee; but say thou by word, and my child shall be healed. (for that reason I judged myself not worthy, that I should come to thee; but say thou the word, and my servant shall be healed.)

⁸ For I am a man ordained under power, and have knights under me (or and have soldiers under me); and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another, Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this thing, and he doeth it.

And when the messengers of John had gone away, he began to say of John to the companies, What went ye out into (the) desert to see? a reed waved with the wind?

²⁵ But what went ye out to see? a man clothed with soft clothes? Lo! they that be in a precious cloth, (or Behold! those who wear expensive clothing), and (be) in delights, be in kings’ houses.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is written, Lo! I send mine angel before thy face, which shall make ready thy way before thee.

²⁸ Certainly I say to you, there is no man a more prophet among the children of women, than is John (the) Baptist, or Soothly I say to you, among the children of women, no man is (a) more prophet (or is a greater prophet) than John (the) Baptist; but he that is less in the kingdom of heavens, is more than he. (Truly I say to you, or I tell you the truth, no man is a greater prophet among the children of women, than is John the Baptist; but whoever is the least in the Kingdom of Heaven, is greater than he.)

²⁹ And all the people hearing, and publicans (or and tax-collectors), that had been baptized with the baptism of John, justified God;

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the wise men of the law, that were not baptized of him, despised the counsel of God against themselves. (but the Pharisees and the men wise in the Law, who were not baptized by him, rejected God’s plan or purpose for themselves.)

³¹ And the Lord said, Therefore to whom shall I say men of this generation like, and to whom be they like?

³² They be like to children sitting in the chapping (or at the market), and speaking together, and saying, We have sung to you with pipes, and ye have not danced; we have made mourning or lamentation and ye have not wept.

³³ For John (the) Baptist came, neither eating bread, nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a fiend, (or He hath a devil, or a demon).

³⁴ Man’s Son came eating and drinking, and ye say, Lo! a man a devourer or a glutton, and drinking wine, a friend of publicans, and of sinful men, (or and ye say, Behold! a glutton, and a wine imbiber, a friend of tax-collectors, and of sinners).

³⁵ And wisdom is justified of all her sons. (And wisdom is justified by all of her sons.)

³⁶ But one of the Pharisees prayed Jesus, that he should eat with him. And he entered into the house of the Pharisee, and sat at the meat. (But one of the Pharisees beseeched Jesus, that he would eat with him. And so he entered into the house of the Pharisee, and sat down for the meal.)

³⁷ And lo! a sinful woman, that was in the city, as she knew, that Jesus sat at the meat (or sat down for a meal) in the house of the Pharisee, she brought an alabaster box of ointment;

³⁸ and she stood behind beside his feet, and began to moist(en) his feet with (her) tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed (them) with ointment.

³⁹ And the Pharisee seeing, that had called him, said within himself, saying, If this were a prophet, he should know, who and what manner woman it were that toucheth him, or If this were a prophet, soothly he should know, who and what manner woman it is that toucheth him, for she is a sinful woman.

⁴⁰ And Jesus answered, and said to him, Simon, I have something to say to thee. And he said, Master, say thou, (or Teacher, tell me).

⁴³ Simon answered, and said, I guess, that he to whom he forgave more. And he answered to him, Thou hast deemed rightly (or Thou hast judged correctly).

¹ And whanne he hadde fulfillid alle hise wordis in to the eeris of the puple, he entride in to Cafarnaum.

² But a seruaunt of a centurien, that was precious to hym, was sijk, and drawynge to the deeth.

³ And whanne he hadde herd of Jhesu, he sente to hym the eldere men of Jewis, and preiede hym, that he wolde come, and heele his seruaunt.

⁴ And whanne thei camen to Jhesu, thei preieden hym bisili, and seiden to hym, For he is worthi, that thou graunte to hym this thing;

⁵ for he loueth oure folk, and he bildide to vs a synagoge.

⁶ And Jhesus wente with hem. And whanne he was not fer fro the hous, the centurien sente to hym freendis, and seide, Lord, nyle thou be trauelid, for Y am not worthi, that thou entre vnder my roof;

⁷ for which thing and Y demede not my silf worthi, that Y come to thee; but seie thou bi word, and my child schal be helid.

⁸ For Y am a man ordeyned vndur power, and haue knyytis vndur me; and Y seie to this, Go, and he goith, and to anothir, Come, and he cometh, and to my seruaunt, Do this thing, and he doith.

⁹ And whanne this thing was herd, Jhesus wondride; and seide to the puple suynge hym, Treuli Y seie to you, nether in Israel Y foond so greet feith.

¹⁰ And thei that weren sent, turneden ayen home, and founden the seruaunt hool, which was sijk.

¹¹ And it was don aftirward, Jhesus wente in to a citee, that is clepid Naym, and hise disciplis; and ful greet puple wente with hym.

¹² And whanne he cam nyy to the yate of the citee, lo! the sone of a womman that hadde no mo children, was borun out deed; and this was a widowe; and myche puple of the citee with hir.

¹³ And whanne the Lord Jhesu hadde seyn hir, he hadde reuthe on hir, and seide to hir, Nyle thou wepe.

¹⁴ And he cam nyy, and touchide the beere; and thei that baren stoden. And he seide, Yonge man, Y seie to thee, rise vp.

¹⁵ And he that was deed sat vp ayen, and bigan to speke; and he yaf hym to his modir.

¹⁶ And drede took alle men, and thei magnyfieden God, and seiden, For a grete profete is rysun among vs, and, For God hath visitid his puple.

¹⁷ And this word wente out of hym in to al Judee, and in to al the cuntre aboute.

¹⁸ And Joones disciplis toolden hym of alle these thingis.

¹⁹ And Joon clepide tweyn of hise disciplis, and sente hem to Jhesu, and seide, Art thou he that is to come, or abiden we anothir?

²⁰ And whanne the men cam to hym, thei seiden, Joon Baptist sente vs to thee, and seide, Art thou he that is to come, or we abiden anothir?

²¹ And in that our he heelide many men of her sijknessis, and woundis, and yuel spiritis; and he yaf siyt to many blynde men.

²² And Jhesus answerde, and seide to hem, Go ye ayen, and telle ye to Joon tho thingis that ye han herd and seyn; blynde men seyn, crokid men goen, mesels ben maad cleene, deef men heren, deed men risen ayen, pore men ben takun to prechyng of the gospel.

²³ And he that schal not be sclaundrid in me, is blessid.

²⁴ And whanne the messangeris of Joon weren go forth, he bigan to seie of Joon to the puple,

²⁵ What wenten ye out in to desert to se? a reed waggid with the wynd?

²⁶ But what wenten ye out to se? a man clothid with softe clothis? Lo! thei that ben in precious cloth and in delicis, ben in kyngis housis. But what wenten ye out to se? a profete? Yhe, Y seie to you, and more than a profete.

²⁷ This is he, of whom it is writun, Lo! Y sende myn aungel bifor thi face, which schal make `thi weie redi bifor thee.

²⁸ Certis Y seie to you, there is no man more prophete among children of wymmen, than is Joon; but he that is lesse in the kyngdom of heuenes, is more than he.

²⁹ And al the puple herynge, and pupplicans, that hadden be baptisid with baptym of Joon, iustifieden God;

³⁰ but the Farisees and the wise men of the lawe, that weren not baptisid of hym, dispisiden the counsel of God ayens hem silf.

³¹ And the Lord seide, Therfor to whom schal Y seie `men of this generacioun lijk, and to whom ben thei lijk?

³² Thei ben lijk to children sittynge in chepyng, and spekynge togider, and seiynge, We han sungun to you with pipis, and ye han not daunsid; we han maad mornyng, and ye han not wept.

³³ For Joon Baptist cam, nethir etynge breed, ne drynkynge wyne, and ye seyen, He hath a feend.

³⁴ Mannus sone cam etynge and drynkynge, and ye seien, Lo! a man a deuourer, and drynkynge wyne, a frend of pupplicans and of synful men.

³⁵ And wisdom is iustified of her sones.

³⁶ But oon of the Farisees preiede Jhesu, that he schulde ete with hym. And he entride in to the hous of the Farise, and sat at the mete.

³⁷ And lo! a synful womman, that was in the citee, as sche knewe, that Jhesu sat at the mete in the hous of the Farisee, sche brouyte an alabaustre box of oynement;

³⁸ and sche stood bihynde bysidis hise feet, and bigan to moiste hise feet with teeris, and wipide with the heeris of hir heed, and kiste hise feet, and anoyntide with oynement.

³⁹ And the Farise seynge, that hadde clepide hym, seide within hym silf, seiynge, If this were a prophete, he schulde wite, who and what maner womman it were that touchith hym, for sche is a synful womman.

⁴⁰ And Jhesus answeride, and seide to hym, Symount, Y haue sumthing to seie to thee. And he seide, Maistir, seie thou.

⁴¹ And he answeride, Twei dettouris weren to o lener; and oon auyt fyue hundrid pans, and `the other fifti;

⁴² but whanne thei hadden not wherof `thei schulden yeelde, he foryaf to bothe. Who thanne loueth hym more?

⁴³ Symount answeride, and seide, Y gesse, that he to whom he foryaf more. And he answeride to hym, Thou hast demyd riytli.

¹ And when he completed all his sayings in the ears of the people, he went into Capernaum;

² and a certain centurion's servant being ill, was about to die, who was much valued by him,

³ and having heard about Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, beseeching him, that having come he might thoroughly save his servant.

⁴ And they, having come near unto Jesus, were calling upon him earnestly, saying — 'He is worthy to whom thou shalt do this,

⁵ for he doth love our nation, and the synagogue he did build to us.'

⁶ And Jesus was going on with them, and now when he is not far distant from the house the centurion sent unto him friends, saying to him, 'Sir, be not troubled, for I am not worthy that under my roof thou mayest enter;

⁷ wherefore not even myself thought I worthy to come unto thee, but say in a word, and my lad shall be healed;

⁸ for I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Be coming, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth it.'

⁹ And having heard these things Jesus wondered at him, and having turned to the multitude following him, he said, 'I say to you, not even in Israel so much faith did I find;'

¹⁰ and those sent, having turned back to the house, found the ailing servant in health.

¹¹ And it came to pass, on the morrow, he was going on to a city called Nain, and there were going with him many of his disciples, and a great multitude,

¹² and as he came nigh to the gate of the city, then, lo, one dead was being carried forth, an only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a great multitude of the city was with her.

¹³ And the Lord having seen her, was moved with compassion towards her, and said to her, 'Be not weeping;'

¹⁴ and having come near, he touched the bier, and those bearing it stood still, and he said, 'Young man, to thee I say, Arise;'

¹⁵ and the dead sat up, and began to speak, and he gave him to his mother;

¹⁶ and fear took hold of all, and they were glorifying God, saying — 'A great prophet hath risen among us,' and — 'God did look upon His people.'

¹⁷ And the account of this went forth in all Judea about him, and in all the region around.

¹⁸ And the disciples of John told him about all these things,

¹⁹ and John having called near a certain two of his disciples, sent unto Jesus, saying, 'Art thou he who is coming, or for another do we look?'

²⁰ And having come near to him, the men said, 'John the Baptist sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he who is coming, or for another do we look?'

²¹ And in that hour he cured many from sicknesses, and plagues, and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight.

²² And Jesus answering said to them, 'Having gone on, report to John what ye saw and heard, that blind men do see again, lame do walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf do hear, dead are raised, poor have good news proclaimed;

²³ and happy is he whoever may not be stumbled in me.'

²⁴ And the messengers of John having gone away, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John: 'What have ye gone forth to the wilderness to look on? a reed by the wind shaken?

²⁵ but what have ye gone forth to see? a man in soft garments clothed? lo, they in splendid apparellings, and living in luxury, are in the houses of kings!

²⁶ 'But what have ye gone forth to see? a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet:

²⁷ this is he concerning whom it hath been written, Lo, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee;

²⁸ for I say to you, a greater prophet, among those born of women, than John the Baptist there is not; but the least in the reign of God is greater than he.'

²⁹ And all the people having heard, and the tax-gatherers, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John,

³⁰ but the Pharisees, and the lawyers, the counsel of God did put away for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

³¹ And the Lord said, 'To what, then, shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

³² they are like to children, to those sitting in a market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We piped to you, and ye did not dance, we mourned to you, and ye did not weep!

³³ 'For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a demon;

³⁴ the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and ye say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners;

³⁵ and the wisdom was justified from all her children.'

³⁶ And a certain one of the Pharisees was asking him that he might eat with him, and having gone into the house of the Pharisee he reclined (at meat),

³⁷ and lo, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having known that he reclineth (at meat) in the house of the Pharisee, having provided an alabaster box of ointment,

³⁸ and having stood behind, beside his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with the tears, and with the hairs of her head she was wiping, and was kissing his feet, and was anointing with the ointment.

³⁹ And the Pharisee who did call him, having seen, spake within himself, saying, 'This one, if he were a prophet, would have known who and of what kind is the woman who doth touch him, that she is a sinner.'

⁴⁰ And Jesus answering said unto him, 'Simon, I have something to say to thee;' and he saith, 'Teacher, say on.'

⁴¹ 'Two debtors were to a certain creditor; the one was owing five hundred denaries, and the other fifty;

⁴² and they not having wherewith to give back, he forgave both; which then of them, say thou, will love him more?'

⁴³ And Simon answering said, 'I suppose that to whom he forgave the more;' and he said to him, 'Rightly thou didst judge.'
