³ And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him;

⁴ how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests alone?

⁵ And he said unto them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.

⁶ And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered.

⁷ And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find how to accuse him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man that had his hand withered, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

⁹ And Jesus said unto them, I ask you, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to destroy it?

¹⁰ And he looked round about on them all, and said unto him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored.

¹¹ But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And when it was day, he called his disciples; and he chose from them twelve, whom also he named apostles:

¹⁴ Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ and Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alphæus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,

¹⁶ and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor;

¹⁷ and he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judæa and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ and they that were troubled with unclean spirits were healed.

¹⁹ And all the multitude sought to touch him; for power came forth from him, and healed them all.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

²³ Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

²⁴ But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

²⁵ Woe unto you, ye that are full now! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you, ye that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

²⁶ Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for in the same manner did their fathers to the false prophets.

²⁷ But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you,

²⁸ bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you.

²⁹ To him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him that taketh away thy cloak withhold not thy coat also.

³⁰ Give to every one that asketh thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

³¹ And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

³² And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them.

³³ And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same.

³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much.

³⁵ But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.

³⁶ Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

³⁷ And judge not, and ye shall not be judged: and condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: release, and ye shall be released:

³⁸ give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again.

³⁹ And he spake also a parable unto them, Can the blind guide the blind? shall they not both fall into a pit?

⁴⁰ The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one when he is perfected shall be as his teacher.

⁴¹ And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

⁴² Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me cast out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

⁴³ For there is no good tree that bringeth forth corrupt fruit; nor again a corrupt tree that bringeth forth good fruit.

⁴⁴ For each tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

⁴⁶ And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

⁴⁷ Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like:

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

³ Jesus wanted to show them that the record in Scriptures indicated that God permitted people to disobey certain religious laws when they needed food. So he replied, “ It is written in the Scriptures what our revered ancestor, King David did when he and the men with him were hungry. You have read about that, ◄ but you do not think about what it implies/so why do you not think about what it implies?► RHQ

⁴ David entered God's big worship tent and asked for some food. The high priest gave him the bread that the priests had presented to God. It was permitted in one of Moses' laws that only the priests could eat that bread. But even though David was not a priest, he ate some, and gave some to the men who were with him. And God did not consider that what David did was wrong!”

⁵ Jesus also said to them, “ I am the one who came from heaven, so I have the authority to determine what is right for my disciples to do on the day of rest!”

⁶ Another ◄Sabbath/Jewish day of rest► Jesus entered a ◄synagogue/Jewish meeting place► and taught the people. There was a man there whose right hand was shriveled.

⁷ The men who taught the Jewish laws and the Pharisees who were there watched Jesus, to see if he would heal the man ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►. They did this so that, if he healed the man, they would accuse him of disobeying their laws by working on the day of rest.

⁸ But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Come and stand here in front of everyone!” So the man got up and stood there.

⁹ Then Jesus said to the others, “I ask you this: Do the laws that God gave Moses permit people to do what is good ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►, or do they permit people to harm others? Do they permit us to save a person's life on our day of rest or to let him die HYP by refusing to help him?”

¹⁰ They refused to answer him. So after he looked around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your shriveled hand!” The man did that, and his hand became all right again!

¹¹ But the men who taught the Jewish laws and the Pharisees were very angry, and they discussed with one another what they could do to get rid of Jesus.

¹² About that time Jesus went up into the hills to pray. He prayed to God all night.

¹³ The next day he summoned all his disciples to come near him. From them he chose twelve men, whom he called apostles.

¹⁴ They were Simon, to whom he gave the new name, Peter; Andrew, Peter's younger brother; James and his younger brother, John; Philip; Bartholomew;

¹⁵ Matthew, whose other name was Levi; Thomas; another James, the son of Alpheus; Simon, who belonged to the party that encouraged people to rebel against the Roman government;

¹⁶ Judas, the son of another James; and Judas Iscariot (OR, Judas from the town of Kerioth), the one who later ◄betrayed Jesus./enabled the Jewish leaders to seize Jesus.►

¹⁷ Jesus came down from the hills with his disciples and stood on a level area. There was a very big crowd of his disciples there. There was also a large group of people who had come from Jerusalem and from many other places in Judea district, and from the coastal areas near Tyre and Sidon cities.

¹⁸ They came to hear Jesus talk to them and to be healed {and for him to heal them} from their diseases. He also healed those whom evil spirits had troubled.

¹⁹ Everyone in the crowd tried to touch him, because he was healing everyone by his/God's power.

²⁰ He looked MTY at his disciples and said, “ God is pleased with you who know that you lack what he wants you to have; he will allow you to be the people whose lives he rules over.

²¹ God is pleased with you who sincerely desire to receive what MTY he wants you to have; he will give you what you need, until you are satisfied. God is pleased with you that grieve now because of sin. Later you will be joyful.

²² God is pleased with you when other people hate you, when they will not let you join them, when they insult you, when they say that you are evil because you believe in me, the one who came from heaven.

²³ When that happens, rejoice! Jump up and down because you are so happy! God will give you a great reward in heaven! When they do these things to you, it will prove that you are God's servants. (OR, People have always treated God's servants like that.) Do not forget that these people's ancestors did the same things to the prophets who served God faithfully!

²⁴ But there will be terrible punishment for you that are rich; the happiness you have received from your riches is the only happiness that you will get.

²⁵ There will be terrible punishment for you who think that you have all that you need now; you will realize that these things will not make you feel satisfied. There will be terrible punishment for you who are joyful now; you will later be very sad.

²⁶ When most HYP people speak well about you, trouble is ahead for you; it will not prove that you are God's servants, because your ancestors used to speak well about those who falsely claimed that they were prophets.”

²⁷ “But I say this to each of you disciples who are listening to what I say: Love your enemies as well as your friends. Do good things for those who hate you!

²⁸ Ask God to bless those who curse you! Pray for those who mistreat you!

²⁹ If someone insults one of you by striking you on one of your cheeks, turn your face so that he can strike the other cheek also. If a bandit wants to take away your (sg) coat, let him also have your shirt.

³⁰ Give something to everyone who asks you (sg) for something. If someone takes away things that belong to you (sg), do not ask him to return them.

³¹ In whatever way you (pl) want others to act toward you, that is the way that you should act toward them.

³² If you love only those who love you, do not expect God to praise you for doing that RHQ, because even sinners love those who love them.

³³ If you do good things only for those who do good things for you, do not expect God to reward you for doing that RHQ, because even sinners do that.

³⁴ If you lend things or money only to those who you expect will give something back to you, do not expect that God will reward you RHQ for doing that. Even sinners lend to other sinners, because they expect them to pay everything back.

³⁵ Instead, love your enemies! Do good things for them! Lend to them, and do not expect them to pay anything back! If you do that, God will give you a big reward. And you will be acting like his children should. Remember that God is kind to people who are not grateful and to people who are wicked, and he expects you to be like that too.

³⁶ Act mercifully toward others, just like your Father in heaven acts mercifully toward you.”

³⁷ “Do not say how sinfully others have acted, and then God will not say how sinfully you have acted. Do not condemn others, and then he will not condemn you DOU. Forgive others for the evil things that they have done to you, and then God will forgive you.

³⁸ Give good things to others, and then God will give good things to you. It will be as though MET God is putting things in a basket for you. He will give you a full amount, pressed down in the basket, which he will shake so that he can put more in, and it will spill over the sides! Remember that the way you act toward others will be the way that God will act toward you!”

³⁹ He also told his disciples this parable to show them that they should be like him, and not be like the Jewish religious leaders: “◄You certainly would not expect a blind man to lead another blind man./Would you expect a blind man to lead another blind man?► RHQ If he tried to do that, ◄they would both probably fall into a hole!/wouldn't they both probably fall into a hole?► RHQ I am your teacher, and you disciples should be like me.

⁴⁰ A disciple should not expect to be better known than his teacher. But if a student is fully trained {if someone fully trains a student}, the student can become like his teacher MET. So you should be content to be like me.

⁴¹ ◄Why do you notice someone else's small faults?/None of you should be concerned about someone else's small faults MET, RHQ.► That would be like noticing a speck in that person's eye. But you should be concerned about your own big faults. They are like planks in your own eye, which you do not notice.

⁴² ◄You (sg) should not say, ‘Friend, let me take out that speck in your eye!’ when you do not notice the log in your own eye!/Why do you say, ‘Friend, let me take out that speck in your eye!’ when you do not notice the log in your own eye?► RHQ If you do that, you are a hypocrite! You should first stop committing your own sins. That will be like removing the plank from your own eye. Then, as a result, you will have the spiritual insight you need to help others get rid of the faults that are like specks in their eyes.”

⁴³ “ People are like trees MET. Healthy trees do not bear bad fruit (OR, bear only good fruit), and unhealthy trees do not bear good fruit.

⁴⁴ Just like you can tell if a tree is good or bad by looking at its fruit, you can tell which people are good and which are bad by looking at the way they conduct their lives. For example, because thornbushes cannot produce figs, no one can pick figs from thornbushes. And since bramble bushes cannot produce grapes, no one can pick grapes from bramble bushes.

⁴⁵ Similarly, good people will conduct their lives in a good way because they think a lot of good things, and evil people will live in an evil way because they think a lot of evil things. The basic principle is that people speak and act according to all that they think .”

⁴⁶ “ Because people should obey what their masters tell them, ◄it is disgraceful that you say that I am your master but you do not do what I tell you!/why do you say that I am your master but you do not do what I tell you?► RHQ

¹⁹ And all the people were desiring to be touched by him, for power came from him and made them all well.

²⁰ And turning his eyes to his disciples he said, Happy are you who are poor: for the kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Happy are you who are in need of food now: for you will be made full. Happy are you who are weeping now; for you will be glad.

²² Happy are you, when men have hate for you, and put you away from among them and say angry words to you, turning away in disgust at your name, because of the Son of man.

²³ Be glad in that day, and be lifted up for joy, for your reward in heaven will be great: for their fathers did these same things to the prophets.

²⁴ But unhappy are you who have wealth: for you have been comforted now.

²⁵ Unhappy are you who are full of food now: for you will be in need. Unhappy are you who are laughing now: for you will be crying in sorrow.

²⁹ If a man gives you a blow on one side of your face, then let the other side be turned to him; from him who takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe.

²¹ Blessed ye that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from them, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as wicked, for the Son of man's sake:

²³ rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in the heaven, for after this manner did their fathers act toward the prophets.

²⁴ But woe to you rich, for ye have received your consolation.

²⁵ Woe to you that are filled, for ye shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for ye shall mourn and weep.

²⁶ Woe, when all men speak well of you, for after this manner did their fathers to the false prophets.

²⁷ But to you that hear I say, Love your enemies; do good to those that hate you;

²⁸ bless those that curse you; pray for those who use you despitefully.

²⁹ To him that smites thee on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him that would take away thy garment, forbid not thy body-coat also.

³⁰ To every one that asks of thee, give; and from him that takes away what is thine, ask it not back.

³¹ And as ye wish that men should do to you, do ye also to them in like manner.

³² And if ye love those that love you, what thank is it to you? for even sinners love those that love them.

³³ And if ye do good to those that do good to you, what thank is it to you? for even sinners do the same.

³⁴ And if ye lend to those from whom ye hope to receive, what thank is it to you? for even sinners lend to sinners that they may receive the like.

³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Highest; for he is good to the unthankful and wicked.

³⁶ Be ye therefore merciful, even as your Father also is merciful.

³⁷ And judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned. Remit, and it shall be remitted to you.

³⁸ Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall be given into your bosom: for with the same measure with which ye mete it shall be measured to you again.

³⁹ And he spoke also a parable to them: Can a blind man lead a blind man? shall not both fall into the ditch?

⁴⁰ The disciple is not above his teacher, but every one that is perfected shall be as his teacher.

⁴¹ But why lookest thou on the mote which is in the eye of thy brother, but perceivest not the beam which is in thine own eye?

⁴² or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, allow me, I will cast out the mote that is in thine eye, thyself not seeing the beam that is in thine eye? Hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine eye, and then thou shalt see clear to cast out the mote which is in the eye of thy brother.

⁴³ For there is no good tree which produces corrupt fruit, nor a corrupt tree which produces good fruit;

⁴⁴ for every tree is known by its own fruit, for figs are not gathered from thorns, nor grapes vintaged from a bramble.

⁴⁵ The good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good; and the wicked man out of the wicked, brings forth what is wicked: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

⁴⁶ And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things that I say?

⁴⁷ Every one that comes to me, and hears my words and does them, I will shew you to whom he is like.

³ And Jesus answering them, said: Have you not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was hungry, and they that were with him:

⁴ How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the bread of proposition, and gave to them that were with him, which is not lawful to eat but only for the priests?

⁵ And he said to them: The Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

⁶ And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue, and taught. And there was a man, whose right hand was withered.

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees watched if he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts; and said to the man who had the withered hand: Arise, and stand forth in the midst. And rising he stood forth.

⁹ Then Jesus said to them: I ask you, if it be lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy?

¹⁰ And looking round about on them all, he said to the man: Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth: and his hand was restored.

¹¹ And they were filled with madness; and they talked one with another, what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and he passed the whole night in the prayer of God.

¹³ And when day was come, he called unto him his disciples; and he chose twelve of them (whom also he named apostles).

¹⁴ Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,

¹⁶ And Jude, the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.

¹⁷ And coming down with them, he stood in a plain place, and the company of his disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon,

¹⁸ Who were come to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits, were cured.

¹⁹ And all the multitude sought to touch him, for virtue went out from him, and healed all.

²⁰ And he, lifting up his eyes on his disciples, said: Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for you shall laugh.

⁷ And the scribes and Pharisees were observing if whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.

⁸ But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand in the midst.” And he arose and stood.

⁹ Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

¹⁰ And when He had looked around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.

¹¹ But they were filled with fury, and they were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹³ And when it became day, He summoned His disciples, and having chosen twelve from them, whom He also named apostles:

¹⁴ He chose Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;

¹⁶ Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

¹⁷ And having come down with them, He stood on a level place, with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,

¹⁸ as well as those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were being healed.

¹⁹ And all the crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was going out from Him, and was healing them all.

²⁰ Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, For yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, For you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, For you shall laugh.

²² Blessed are you when men shall hate you, And when they shall exclude you, And shall revile you, and cast out your name as evil, Because of the Son of Man.

³¹ And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.

³² “But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

³³ And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

³⁴ And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive it back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may receive the same amount back.

³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping to receive nothing back; and your reward shall be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.

³⁶ Therefore be compassionate, just as your Father also is compassionate.

⁴² Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, permit me to remove the speck which is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck which is in your brother's eye.

¹⁰ And when He had looked around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” So he did that, and his hand was restored, as sound as the other.

¹¹ But they were filled with rage, and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹⁹ So the whole crowd kept trying to touch Him, because power was going out from Him and was healing all.

²⁰ Then He raised His eyes toward His disciples and said: “Blessed are you poor, because the Kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, because you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh.

²² Blessed are you whenever men hate you, and whenever they exclude you and heap insults on you and trash your name as ‘malignant’, for the Son of the Man's sake.

²³ Rejoice in that day and skip about! Because your reward really is great in Heaven; for that is how their fathers treated the prophets.

²⁴ “But woe to you who are rich! because you have already received your comfort.

²⁵ Woe to you who are full! because you will go hungry. Woe to you who are presently laughing! because you will mourn and weep.

²⁶ Woe, when all men speak well of you; for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets!

²⁷ “Further, to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you;

²⁸ bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

²⁹ To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold the tunic as well.

³⁰ Give to everyone who asks of you; and from him who takes away your things, do not demand them back.

³¹ Yes, like you want people to treat you, that is just how you must treat them.

³² Also, if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them.

³³ And if you do good to those doing good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do the same.

³⁴ And if you lend to those from whom you expect to get it back, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners’, to receive an equal value back.

³⁵ “So, love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; because He is kind toward the ungrateful and wicked.

³⁶ So be compassionate, even as your Father is compassionate.

³⁷ “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

⁴⁵ The good man produces the good out of the good treasure in his heart, and the malignant man produces the malignant out of the malignant treasure in his heart; because his mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart.

⁴⁶ “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord’, and not do what I say?

⁴⁷ Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them—I will show you who he is like:

³ Jesus replied, “Have you never read what David did when he and his men were hungry?

⁴ How he went into the house of God and took the consecrated bread? He ate it, and gave it to his men too. That's not permitted either. The consecrated bread is only for the priests.”

⁵ Then he told them, “The Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

⁶ On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue to teach. A man was there with a crippled right hand.

⁷ The religious teachers and the Pharisees were observing Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. They wanted to find something to accuse him of.

⁸ But Jesus knew what was in their minds. He told the man with the crippled hand, “Get up, and stand here in front of everyone.” The man got up and stood there.

⁹ Then Jesus turned to them and said, “Let me ask you a question. Is it legal to do good on the Sabbath, or to do bad? To save life, or to destroy it?”

¹⁰ He looked round at all of them there. Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand became like new.

¹¹ But they flew into a rage, and began to discuss what they could do to Jesus.

¹² One day shortly after, Jesus went up a mountain to pray. He remained there all night, praying to God.

¹³ When morning came he called together his disciples, and chose twelve of them. These are the names of the apostles:

¹⁴ Simon (also called Peter by Jesus), Andrew his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Revolutionary,

¹⁶ Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot (who became a traitor).

¹⁷ Jesus went back down the mountain with them, and stopped at a place where there was some flat ground. There a crowd made up of his disciples and many other people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, had gathered to listen to him and to be cured from their diseases.

¹⁸ Those who were troubled by evil spirits were also healed.

¹⁹ Everyone in the crowd tried to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.

²⁰ Looking at his disciples, Jesus told them,

²¹ “How happy are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours. How happy are you who are hungry now, for you will eat all you need. How happy are you who are weeping now, for you will laugh.

²² How happy are you when people hate you, exclude you, insult you, and curse your name as evil because of me, the Son of man.

²³ When that day comes, be happy. Jump for joy, for great is your reward in heaven. Don't forget their forefathers mistreated the prophets just like this.

²⁴ But how sad are you who are rich, for you have already received your reward.

²⁵ How sad are you who are full now, for you will become hungry. How sad are you who laugh now, for you will mourn and cry.

²⁶ How sad are you when everyone praises you. Don't forget that their forefathers praised false prophets just like this.

²⁷ But I say to those of you who are listening: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.

²⁸ Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you.

²⁹ If someone hits you on one cheek, turn the other cheek. If someone takes your coat, don't prevent them taking your shirt.

³⁰ Give to anyone who asks you. If someone takes something from you, don't ask for it back.

³¹ Do to others what you want them to do to you.

³² If you love those who love you, why should you deserve any credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them.

³³ If you do good to those who do good to you, why should you deserve any credit for that either? Sinners do that as well.

³⁴ If you lend money expecting to be repaid, why should you deserve any credit for that? Sinners lend money to other sinners as well, expecting to be repaid what they loaned.

³⁵ No: love your enemies, do good to them, and lend without expecting to be repaid anything. Then you will receive a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God, for he is kind to ungrateful and wicked people.

³⁶ Be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.

³⁷ Don't judge, and you won't be judged; don't condemn, and you won't be condemned; forgive, and you'll be forgiven;

³⁸ give, and you will be given generously in return. When what you're given is measured out, it's pressed down so more can be added, spilling out over the top, pouring into your lap! For how much you give will determine how much you receive.”

³⁹ Then he illustrated the point: “Can a blind person lead another? Wouldn't they both fall into a ditch?

⁴⁰ Do students know more than the teacher? Only when they've learned everything: then they will be like their teacher.

⁴¹ Why are you so worried about the speck that's in your brother's eye when you don't even notice the plank that's in your own eye?

⁴² How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that's in your eye,’ when you don't even see the plank that's in your own eye? Hypocrite! Take out the plank from your own eye first, and then you'll be able to see well enough to take out the speck from your brother's eye.

⁴³ A good tree doesn't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree doesn't produce good fruit.

⁴⁴ You recognize a tree by the fruit it produces. You don't pick figs from thorn bushes, or harvest grapes from brambles.

⁴⁵ Good people produce what's good from the good things they value that they have stored inside them. Bad people produce what's bad from the bad things they have stored inside them. What fills people's minds spills out in what they say.

⁴⁶ So why do you bother to call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ when you don't do what I say?

⁴⁷ I'll give you an example of someone who comes to me, hears my instructions, and follows them.

³ Then Iesus answered them, and said, Haue ye not read this, that Dauid did when he himselfe was an hungred, and they which were with him,

⁴ Howe he went into the house of God, and tooke, and ate the shewbread, and gaue also to them which were with him, which was not lawful to eate, but for the Priests onely?

⁵ And he sayd vnto them, The Sonne of man is Lord also of the Sabbath day.

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went vertue out of him, and healed them all.

²² Blessed are ye when men hate you, and when they separate you, and reuile you, and put out your name as euill, for the Sonne of mans sake.

¹⁹ and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him, because a power went out from him which restored them all.

²⁰ Then, raising his eyes and looking at his disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

²² Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they expel you from amongst them, and insult you, and reject your name as an evil thing — because of the Son of Man.

²³ Then indeed you may be glad and dance for joy, for be sure that your reward in heaven will be great; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

²⁴ But alas for you who are rich, for you have had your comforts in full.

²⁵ Alas for you who are sated now, for you will hunger. Alas for you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

²⁶ Alas for you when everyone speaks well of you; for this is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

²⁷ But to you who hear I say — love your enemies, show kindness to those who hate you,

²⁸ bless those who curse you, pray for those who insult you.

²⁹ When someone gives one of you a blow on the cheek, offer the other cheek as well; and, when anyone takes away your cloak, do not keep back your coat either.

³⁰ Give to everyone who asks of you; and, when anyone takes away what is yours, do not demand its return.

³¹ Do to others as you wish them to do to you.

³² If you love only those who love you, what thanks will be due to you? Why, even the outcast love those who love them!

³³ For, if you show kindness only to those who show kindness to you, what thanks will be due to you? Even the outcast do that!

¹⁷ He came down with them, and stood on a level place, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judea Praise and Jerusalem City of peace, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ as well as those who were troubled by unclean spirits, and they were being healed.

¹⁹ All the multitude sought to touch him, for power came out of him and healed them all.

²⁰ He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, God’s Kingdom is yours.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

²² Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.

²³ Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets.

²⁴ “But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation.

²⁵ Woe to you, you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

²⁷ “But I tell you who hear: show agapao ·total devotion love· to your enemies, do good to those who hate and detest you,

²⁹ To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also.

³⁰ Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again.

³¹ “As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them.

³⁸ “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

³⁹ He spoke a parable to them. “Can the blind guide the blind? Won’t they both fall into a pit?

⁴⁰ A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

⁴¹ Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye?

⁴² Or how can you tell your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye.

⁴³ For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.

⁴⁴ For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.

⁴¹ Why seyst thou a moote in thy brothers eye and considerest not the beame that is in thyne awne eye?

⁴² Ether how cannest thou saye to thy brother: Brother let me pull out the moote that is in thyne eye: when thou perceavest not the beame that is in thyne awne eye? Ypocrite cast out the beame out of thyne awne eye fyrst and then shalt thou se perfectly to pull out the moote out of thy brothers eye.

⁴³ It is not a good tree that bringeth forthe evyll frute: nether is that an evyll tree that bringeth forthe good frute.

⁴⁴ For every tree is knowen by his frute. Nether of thornes gader men fygges nor of busshes gader they grapes.

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his hert bringeth forthe that which is good. And an evyll man out of the evyll treasure of his hert bringeth forthe that which ys evyll. For of the aboundaunce of the her his mouthe speakethe.

⁴⁶ Why call ye me Master, Master: and do not as I bid you?

⁴⁷ whosoever cometh to me and heareth my sayinges and dothe the same I will shewe you to whome he ys lyke.

³ Answering them, Jesus said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and the men who were with him?

⁴ He went into the house of God, and took the bread of the presence and ate some of it, and also gave some to the men who were with him to eat, even though it was only lawful for the priests to eat it.”

⁷ The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him closely to see whether he would heal someone on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.

⁸ But he knew what they were thinking and he said to the man whose hand was withered, “Get up, and stand here in the middle of everyone.” So the man got up and stood there.

⁹ Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?”

¹⁰ Then he looked around at them all and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was restored.

¹¹ But they were filled with anger and they talked to each other about what they might do to Jesus.

²⁵ Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry later. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep later.

²⁷ But I say to you who are listening, love your enemies and do good to those who hate you.

³⁰ Give to everyone who asks you. If someone takes away something that belongs to you, do not ask him to give it back to you.

First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the piece of straw that is in your brother's eye.

⁸ But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth.

⁹ Then said Jesus to them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it ?

¹⁰ And looking around upon them all, he said to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

¹¹ And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out to a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

¹³ And when it was day, he called to him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named Apostles;

¹⁴ Simon (whom he also named Peter) and Andrew his brother, James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon called Zelotes,

¹⁶ And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also was the traitor.

¹⁷ And he came down with them, and stood in the plain; and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea-coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

¹⁸ And they that were afflicted with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

¹⁹ And the whole multitude sought to touch him; for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

²⁰ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

²¹ Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

²² Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company , and shall reproach you , and cast out your name as evil, on account of the son of man.

²³ Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers to the prophets.

²⁴ But woe to you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

²⁵ Woe to you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe to you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

²⁶ Woe to you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

²⁷ But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to them who hate you,

²⁸ Bless them that curse you, and pray for them who despitefully use you.

²⁹ And to him that smiteth thee on the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke, forbid not to take thy coat also.

³⁰ Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again.

³¹ And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

³² For if ye love them who love you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

³³ And if ye do good to them who do good to you, what thanks have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

³⁴ And if ye lend to them from whom ye hope to receive, what thanks have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much in return.

³⁵ But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil.

³⁶ Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

⁴² Or how can you tell your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye.

⁴³ “For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit.

¹⁸ and they that were travailed of or with unclean spirits, were healed.

¹⁹ And all the people sought to touch him, for virtue went out of him, and healed all.

²⁰ And when his eyes were cast up, into his disciples, he said, Blessed be ye, poor men or poor, for the kingdom of God is yours.

²¹ Blessed be ye, that now hunger, for ye shall be full-filled. Blessed be ye, that now weep, for ye shall laugh. Blessed be ye, that hunger now, for ye shall be filled. Blessed be ye that weep now, for ye shall laugh.

²² Ye shall be blessed, when men shall hate you, and separate you away, and put reproof to you or shall put shame on you, and cast out your name as evil, for man’s Son.

²³ Joy ye in that day, and be ye glad; for lo! your meed is much in heaven; for after these things the fathers of them did to prophets.

²⁴ Nevertheless woe to you, rich men, that have your comfort.

²⁵ Woe to you that be full-filled, for ye shall hunger. Woe to you that now laugh, for ye shall mourn, and weep. Woe to you that be filled, for ye shall hunger. Woe to you that laugh now, for ye shall mourn, and weep.

(And if ye lend to those from whom ye hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? for sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much.)

³⁵ Nevertheless love ye your enemies, and do ye well, and lend ye, hoping nothing thereof, and your meed shall be much (or and your reward shall be great), and ye shall be the sons of the Highest, for he is benign, or of good will, on unkind men and evil men.

³⁶ Therefore be ye merciful, as your Father is merciful.

³⁷ Do not ye deem, and ye shall not be deemed, (or Do not judge, and ye shall not be judged). Do not ye condemn, and ye shall not be condemned; forgive ye, and it shall be forgiven to you.

³⁸ Give ye, and it shall be given to you. They shall give into your bosom a good measure, and well-filled, and shaken together, and overflowing; for by the same measure, by which ye mete, it shall be meted again to you, (or for by the same measure, by which ye measure, it shall be measured unto you).

³⁹ And he said to them a likeness (or a parable), Whether the blind may lead the blind? nor fall they not both into the ditch? or whether they fall not both into the ditch?

⁴⁰ A disciple is not above his master (or A student is not above his teacher); but each shall be perfect, if he be as his master.

⁴¹ And what seest thou in thy brother’s eye a mote (or And why seest thou a speck in thy brother’s eye), but thou beholdest not a beam, that is in thine own eye?

⁴² Or how mayest thou say to thy brother, Brother, suffer, (and) I shall cast out the mote of thine eye, (or Brother, allow me, and I shall take out the speck from thine eye), and thou beholdest not a beam that is in thine own eye? Hypocrite, first take out or cast out the beam of thine eye, and then thou shalt see to take out the mote of thy brother’s eye.

⁴³ It is not a good tree, that maketh evil fruits, neither an evil tree, that maketh good fruits;

⁴⁴ for every tree is known of his fruit. And men gather not figs of thorns, neither men gather a grape of a bush of briers. (for every tree is known by its fruit. And people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a briar bush.)

⁴⁵ A good man (out) of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth good things, and an evil man (out) of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things; for (out) of the plenty of the heart the mouth speaketh.

⁴⁶ And what call ye me, Lord, Lord, (or And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord), and do not (do) those things that I say.

⁴⁷ Each that cometh to me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I shall show to you, to whom he is like.

³ And Jhesus answeride, and seide to hem, Han ye not redde, what Dauith dide, whanne he hungride, and thei that weren with hym;

⁴ hou he entride in to the hous of God, and took looues of proposicioun, and eet, and yaf to hem that weren with hem; whiche looues it was not leeueful to eete, but oonli to prestis.

⁵ And he seide to hem, For mannus sone is lord, yhe, of the sabat.

⁶ And it was don in another sabat, that he entride in to a synagoge, and tauyte. And a man was there, and his riyt hoond was drie.

⁷ And the scribis and Farisees aspieden hym, if he wolde heele hym in the sabat, that thei schulden fynde cause, whereof thei schulden accuse hym.

⁸ And he wiste the thouytis of hem, and he seide to the man that hadde a drie hoond, Rise vp, and stonde in to the myddil. And he roos, and stood.

⁹ And Jhesus seide to hem, Y axe you, if it is leueful to do wel in the sabat, or yuel? to make a soule saaf, or to leese?

¹⁰ And whanne he hadde biholde alle men aboute, he seide to the man, Hold forth thin hoond. And he held forth, and his hond was restorid to helthe.

¹¹ And thei weren fulfillid with vnwisdom, and spaken togidir, what thei schulden do of Jhesu.

¹² And it was don in tho daies, he wente out in to an hil to preye; and he was al nyyt dwellynge in the preier of God.

¹³ And whanne the day was come, he clepide hise disciplis, and chees twelue of hem, whiche he clepide also apostlis;

¹⁴ Symount, whom he clepide Petir, and Andrew, his brothir, James and Joon,

¹⁵ Filip and Bartholomew, Matheu and Thomas, James Alphei, and Symount, that is clepid Zelotes,

¹⁶ Judas of James, and Judas Scarioth, that was traytoure.

¹⁷ And Jhesus cam doun fro the hil with hem, and stood in a feeldi place; and the cumpeny of hise disciplis, and a greet multitude of puple, of al Judee, and Jerusalem, and of the see coostis, and of Tyre and Sidon,

¹⁸ that camen to here hym, and to be heelid of her siknessis; and thei that weren trauelid of vncleene spiritis, weren heelid.

¹⁹ And al puple souyte to touche hym, for vertu wente out of hym, and heelide alle.

²⁰ And whanne hise iyen weren cast vp in to hise disciplis, he seide, Blessid be ye, `pore men, for the kyngdom of God is youre.

²¹ Blessid be ye, that now hungren, for ye schulen be fulfillid. Blessid be ye, that now wepen, for ye schulen leiye.

²² Ye schulen be blessid, whanne men schulen hate you, and departe you awei, and putte schenschip to you, and cast out youre name as yuel, for mannus sone.

²³ Joye ye in that dai, and be ye glad; for lo! youre meede is myche in heuene; for aftir these thingis the fadris of hem diden to prophetis.

²⁴ Netheles wo to you, riche men, that han youre coumfort.

²⁸ blesse ye men that cursen you, preye ye for men that defamen you.

²⁹ And to him that smytith thee on o cheeke, schewe also the tothir; and fro hym that takith awei fro thee a cloth, nyle thou forbede the coote.

³⁰ And yyue to eche that axith thee, and if a man takith awei tho thingis that ben thine, axe thou not ayen.

³¹ And as ye wolen that men do to you, do ye also to hem in lijk maner.

³² And if ye louen hem that louen you, what thanke is to you? for synful men louen men that louen hem.

³³ And if ye don wel to hem that don wel to you, what grace is to you? synful men don this thing.

³⁴ And if ye leenen to hem of whiche ye hopen to take ayen, what thanke is to you? for synful men leenen to synful men, to take ayen as myche.

³⁵ Netheles loue ye youre enemyes, and do ye wel, and leene ye, hopinge no thing therof, and youre mede schal be myche, and ye schulen be the sones of the Heyest, for he is benygne on vnkynde men and yuele men.

³⁶ Therfor be ye merciful, as youre fadir is merciful.

³⁷ Nyle ye deme, and ye schulen not be demed. Nyle ye condempne, and ye schulen not be condempned; foryyue ye, and it schal be foryouun to you.

³⁸ Yyue ye, and it schal be youun to you. Thei schulen yyue in to youre bosum a good mesure, and wel fillid, and schakun togidir, and ouerflowynge; for bi the same mesure, bi whiche ye meeten, it schal be metun `ayen to you.

³⁹ And he seide to hem a liknesse, Whether the blynde may leede the blynde? ne fallen thei not bothe `in to the diche?

⁴⁰ A disciple is not aboue the maistir; but eche schal be perfite, if he be as his maister.

⁴¹ And what seest thou in thi brotheris iye a moot, but thou biholdist not a beem, that is in thin owne iye?

⁴² Or hou maist thou seie to thi brother, Brothir, suffre, Y schal caste out the moot of thin iye, and thou biholdist not a beem in thin owne iye? Ipocrite, first take out the beem of thin iye, and thanne thou schalt se to take the moot of thi brotheris iye.

⁴³ It is not a good tree, that makith yuel fruytis, nether an yuel tree, that makith good fruytis;

⁴⁴ for euery tre is knowun of his fruyt. And men gaderen not figus of thornes, nethir men gaderen a grape of a buysche of breris.

⁴⁵ A good man of the good tresoure of his herte bryngith forth good thingis, and an yuel man of the yuel tresoure bryngith forth yuel thingis; for of the plente of the herte the mouth spekith.

⁴⁶ And what clepen ye me, Lord, Lord, and doon not tho thingis that Y seie.

⁴⁷ Eche that cometh to me, and herith my wordis, and doith hem, Y schal schewe to you, to whom he is lijk.

³ And Jesus answering said unto them, 'Did ye not read even this that David did, when he hungered, himself and those who are with him,

⁴ how he went into the house of God, and the loaves of the presentation did take, and did eat, and gave also to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat, except only to the priests?'

⁵ and he said to them, — 'The Son of Man is lord also of the sabbath.'

⁶ And it came to pass also, on another sabbath, that he goeth into the synagogue, and teacheth, and there was there a man, and his right hand was withered,

⁷ and the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, if on the sabbath he will heal, that they might find an accusation against him.

⁸ And he himself had known their reasonings, and said to the man having the withered hand, 'Rise, and stand in the midst;' and he having risen, stood.

⁹ Then said Jesus unto them, 'I will question you something: Is it lawful on the sabbaths to do good, or to do evil? life to save or to kill?'

¹⁰ And having looked round on them all, he said to the man, 'Stretch forth thy hand;' and he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other;

¹¹ and they were filled with madness, and were speaking with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹² And it came to pass in those days, he went forth to the mountain to pray, and was passing the night in the prayer of God,

¹³ and when it became day, he called near his disciples, and having chosen from them twelve, whom also he named apostles,

¹⁴ (Simon, whom also he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

¹⁵ Matthew and Thomas, James of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

¹⁶ Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became betrayer;)

¹⁷ and having come down with them, he stood upon a level spot, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses,

¹⁸ and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were healed,

¹⁹ and all the multitude were seeking to touch him, because power from him was going forth, and he was healing all.

²⁰ And he, having lifted up his eyes to his disciples, said: 'Happy the poor — because yours is the reign of God.

²¹ 'Happy those hungering now — because ye shall be filled. 'Happy those weeping now — because ye shall laugh.

²² 'Happy are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach, and shall cast forth your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake —

²³ rejoice in that day, and leap, for lo, your reward is great in the heaven, for according to these things were their fathers doing to the prophets.

²⁴ 'But woe to you — the rich, because ye have got your comfort.

²⁵ 'Woe to you who have been filled — because ye shall hunger. 'Woe to you who are laughing now — because ye shall mourn and weep.

²⁶ 'Woe to you when all men shall speak well of you — for according to these things were their fathers doing to false prophets.

²⁷ 'But I say to you who are hearing, Love your enemies, do good to those hating you,

²⁸ bless those cursing you, and pray for those accusing you falsely;

²⁹ and to him smiting thee upon the cheek, give also the other, and from him taking away from thee the mantle, also the coat thou mayest not keep back.

³⁰ 'And to every one who is asking of thee, be giving; and from him who is taking away thy goods, be not asking again;

³¹ and as ye wish that men may do to you, do ye also to them in like manner;

³² and — if ye love those loving you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful love those loving them;

³³ and if ye do good to those doing good to you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful do the same;

³⁴ and if ye lend to those of whom ye hope to receive back, what grace have ye? for also the sinful lend to sinners — that they may receive again as much.

³⁹ And he spake a simile to them, 'Is blind able to lead blind? shall they not both fall into a pit?

⁴⁰ A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one perfected shall be as his teacher.

⁴¹ 'And why dost thou behold the mote that is in thy brother's eye, and the beam that is in thine own eye dost not consider?

⁴² or how art thou able to say to thy brother, Brother, suffer, I may take out the mote that is in thine eye — thyself the beam in thine own eye not beholding? Hypocrite, take first the beam out of thine own eye, and then thou shalt see clearly to take out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

⁴³ 'For there is not a good tree making bad fruit, nor a bad tree making good fruit;

⁴⁴ for each tree from its own fruit is known, for not from thorns do they gather figs, nor from a bramble do they crop a grape.

⁴⁵ 'The good man out of the good treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which is evil; for out of the abounding of the heart doth his mouth speak.

⁴⁶ 'And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord, and do not what I say?

⁴⁷ Every one who is coming unto me, and is hearing my words, and is doing them, I will shew you to whom he is like;
