Luke 24:3-18 in English

³ And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ And it came to pass, while they were perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel:

⁵ and as they were affrighted and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

⁶ He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

⁷ saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

⁸ And they remembered his words,

⁹ and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

¹⁰ Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles.

¹¹ And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them.

¹² But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

¹³ And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

¹⁷ And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

³ They went in the tomb, but the body of the Lord Jesus was not there!

⁴ They did not know what to think about that. Then suddenly two men wearing bright shining clothes stood by them!

⁵ The women were frightened. As they prostrated themselves on the ground, the two men said to them, “◄You should not be seeking someone who is alive in a place where they bury dead people!/Why are you seeking in a place where they bury dead people someone who is alive?► RHQ

⁶ He is not here; he has ◄become alive again/risen from the dead►! Remember that while he was still with you in Galilee district he said to you,

⁷ ‘ Even though I am the one who came from heaven, someone will enable sinful men to seize MTY me. They will kill me by nailing me to a cross. But on the third day after that, I will become alive again.’ ”

⁸ The women remembered that he had said that.

⁹ So they left the tomb and went to the eleven apostles and his other disciples and told them those things.

¹⁰ The ones who kept telling those things to the apostles were Mary from Magdala village, Joanna, Mary who was the mother of James, and the other women who were with them.

¹¹ But the apostles thought that what the women said was nonsense. They did not believe what the women said.

¹² But Peter got up and ran to the tomb anyway. He stooped down and looked inside. He saw the linen cloths in which Jesus' body had been wrapped. The cloths were by themselves (OR, He did not see anything else). So, wondering what had happened, he went home.

¹³ That same day two of Jesus' disciples were walking to a village named Emmaus. It was about ◄seven miles/eleven kilometers► from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ They were talking with each other about all the things that had happened to Jesus.

¹⁵ While they were discussing those things, Jesus himself approached them and started walking with them.

¹⁶ But they were prevented { something prevented them} from recognizing MTY him.

¹⁷ Jesus said to them, “What have you two been talking about while you were walking?” They stopped, and their faces looked very sad.

¹⁸ One of them, whose name was Cleopas, said, “◄You (sg) must be the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days!/Are you the only person who is visiting Jerusalem for the Passover festival who does not know the events that have happened there in recent days?► RHQ”

⁵ Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. The men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

¹⁵ While they talked and questioned together, Jesus himself came near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷ He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?”

⁶ He is not here, he has come back to life: have in mind what he said to you when he was still in Galilee, saying,

⁷ The Son of man will be given up into the hands of evil-doers, and be put to death on the cross, and on the third day he will come back to life.

⁸ And his words came back into their minds,

⁹ And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.

¹⁰ Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles.

¹¹ But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them.

¹² But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place.

¹³ And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place.

¹⁵ And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go?

¹⁸ Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time?

³ And when they had entered they found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ And it came to pass as they were in perplexity about it, that behold, two men suddenly stood by them in shining raiment.

⁵ And as they were filled with fear and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, Why seek ye the living one among the dead?

⁶ He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke to you, being yet in Galilee,

⁷ saying, The Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinners, and be crucified, and rise the third day.

⁸ And they remembered his words;

⁹ and, returning from the sepulchre, related all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.

¹⁰ Now it was Mary of Magdala, and Johanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the others with them, who told these things to the apostles.

¹¹ And their words appeared in their eyes as an idle tale, and they disbelieved them.

¹² But Peter, rising up, ran to the sepulchre, and stooping down he sees the linen clothes lying there alone, and went away home, wondering at what had happened.

¹³ And behold, two of them were going on the same day to a village distant sixty stadia from Jerusalem, called Emmaus;

¹⁴ and they conversed with one another about all these things which had taken place.

¹⁵ And it came to pass as they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus himself drawing nigh, went with them;

¹⁶ but their eyes were holden so as not to know him.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What discourses are these which pass between you as ye walk, and are downcast?

¹⁸ And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said to him, Thou sojournest alone in Jerusalem, and dost not know what has taken place in it in these days?

³ And going in, they found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ And it came to pass, as they were astonished in their mind at this, behold, two men stood by them, in shining apparel.

⁵ And as they were afraid, and bowed down their countenance towards the ground, they said unto them: Why seek you the living with the dead?

⁶ He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke unto you, when he was in Galilee,

⁷ Saying: The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

⁸ And they remembered his words.

⁹ And going back from the sepulchre, they told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

¹⁰ And it was Mary Magdalen, and Joanna, and Mary of James, and the other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles.

¹⁷ And he said to them: What are these discourses that you hold one with another as you walk, and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one of them, whose name was Cleophas, answering, said to him: Art thou only a stranger to Jerusalem, and hast not known the things that have been done there in these days?

¹³ Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they were conversing with one another about all these things which had happened.

¹⁵ So it was, as they were conversing and discussing, that Jesus Himself drew near and started to travel with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not recognize Him.

¹⁷ And He said to them, “What are these words which you are exchanging with one another as you walk, and you have a gloomy look?”

¹⁸ Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and do not know what has happened in it in these days?”

³ but upon entering they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that wow, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing!

⁵ Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them: “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?

⁶ He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He told you while still in Galilee,

¹³ And then that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

³ but when they went in they didn't find the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ While they were wondering what was going on, two men suddenly appeared dressed in clothes that shone brilliantly.

⁵ The women were terrified and bowed down, their faces on the ground. They said to the women, “Why are you looking for someone who is alive among the dead?

⁶ He's not here; he's risen from the dead! Remember what he told you while you were still in Galilee:

⁷ ‘The Son of man must be betrayed into the hands of evil men, be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’”

⁸ Then they remembered what he'd said.

⁹ When they returned from the tomb they reported all that had happened to the eleven disciples and to all the others.

¹⁰ Those who told the apostles what had happened were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them.

¹¹ But it seemed like nonsense to them, so they didn't believe the women.

¹² However, Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Bending down, he looked in and saw only the linen grave-clothes. So he went back home, wondering what had happened.

¹³ The same day two disciples were on their way to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ They were talking about all that had happened.

¹⁵ As they discussed and debated, Jesus came up and fell into step with them.

¹⁶ But they were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷ “What are you discussing as you walk along?” he asked them. They stopped, their faces sad.

¹⁸ One of them, called Cleopas, replied, “Are you just visiting Jerusalem? You must be the only person who doesn't know the things that have happened in the past few days.”

³ And went in, but found not the body of the Lord Iesus.

⁴ And it came to passe, that as they were amased thereat, beholde, two men suddenly stood by them in shining vestures.

⁵ And as they were afraide, and bowed downe their faces to the earth, they sayd to them, Why seeke ye him that liueth, among the dead?

⁶ He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake vnto you, when he was yet in Galile,

⁷ Saying, that the sonne of man must be deliuered into the hands of sinfull men, and be crucified, and the third day rise againe.

⁸ And they remembred his wordes,

⁹ And returned from the sepulchre, and tolde all these things vnto the eleuen, and to all the remnant.

¹⁰ Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Ioanna, and Mary the mother of Iames, and other women with them, which tolde these things vnto the Apostles.

¹¹ But their wordes seemed vnto them, as a fained thing, neither beleeued they them.

¹² Then arose Peter, and ran vnto the sepulchre, and looked in, and saw the linnen clothes laide by themselues, and departed wondering in himselfe at that which was come to passe.

¹³ And beholde, two of them went that same day to a towne which was from Hierusalem about threescore furlongs, called Emmaus.

¹⁴ And they talked together of al these things that were done.

¹⁵ And it came to passe, as they communed together, and reasoned, that Iesus himselfe drewe neere, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden, that they could not know him.

¹⁷ And he sayd vnto them, What maner of communications are these that ye haue one to another as ye walke and are sad?

¹⁸ And the one (named Cleopas) answered, and sayd vnto him, Art thou onely a stranger in Hierusalem, and hast not knowen the things which are come to passe therein in these dayes?

¹³ And lo! two of them were going the same day to a village called Emmaus, distant a hundred and sixty furlongs from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they were conversing together about all those things which had taken place.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, while they were conversing and reasoning, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were restrained from knowing him.

¹⁷ And he said to them, What discourse is this which ye have one with another, as ye are walking? And they stood sad.

¹⁸ And one, whose name was Cleopas, answering said to him, Art thou the only sojourner in Jerusalem that doth not know the things which have come to pass there in these days?

³ and, on going into it, they could not find the body.

⁴ While they were at a loss to account for this, all at once two men stood beside them, in dazzling clothing.

⁵ But, when in their fear the women bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why are you looking amongst the dead for him who is living?

⁶ Remember how he spoke to you before he left Galilee —

⁷ How he said that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of wicked men, and be crucified, and rise again on the third day.”

⁸ Then they remembered the words of Jesus,

⁹ and, on returning from the tomb, they told all this to the Eleven and to all the rest.

¹⁰ There were Mary of Magdala, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James. The other women, too, spoke about this to the apostles.

⁸ They remembered his words,

¹² But Peter Rock got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened.

¹³ Behold, two of them were going that same day (Nissan 17) to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia 7.93 mi; 11.1 km from Jerusalem City of peace.

¹⁴ They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.

¹⁵ While they talked and questioned together, Yeshua Salvation himself came near, and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

¹⁷ He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?”

¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem City of peace who does not know the things which have happened there in these days?”

¹³ Later, on that same day, 2 of Jesus’s followers walked from Jerusalem to a community called Emmaus. That was about 11 kilometers.

¹⁴ As they walked along the road they talked about everything that happened.

¹⁵ Then suddenly Jesus came and joined up with them, but they didn’t know it was Jesus. God blocked their eyes a bit, so they couldn’t see who he was. Jesus walked along with them and listened to what they said to each other,

¹⁷ then he asked them, “What is this thing you are talking about so much, as you walk along the road?” When they heard him say that they both stopped, and they looked very sad.

¹⁸ Then one of them, called Cleopas, said, “I reckon you are the only visitor to Jerusalem that hasn’t heard about the things that happened here in the last few days.”

³ and went in: but founde not the body of the Lorde Iesu.

⁴ And it happened as they were amased therat: Beholde two men stode by them in shynynge vestures.

⁵ And as they were a frayde and bowed doune their faces to the erth: they sayd to them: why seke ye the lyvinge amonge the deed?

⁶ He is not here: but is rysen. Remember how he spake vnto you when he was yet with you in Galile

⁷ sayinge: that the sonne of man must be delyvered into the hondes of synfull men and be crucified and the thyrde daye ryse agayne.

⁸ And they remembred his wordes

⁹ and returned from the sepulcre and tolde all these thinges vnto the eleven and to all the remanaunt.

¹² Then aroose Peter and ran vnto the sepulcre and stouped in and sawe the lynnen cloothes layde by them selfe and departed wondrynge in him selfe at that which had happened.

¹³ And beholde two of them went that same daye to a toune which was from Ierusalem about thre scoore for longes called Emaus:

¹⁴ and they talked togeder of all these thinges that had happened.

¹⁵ And it chaunsed as they commened togeder and reasoned that Iesus him selfe drue neare and went with them.

¹⁶ But their eyes were holden that they coulde not knowe him.

¹⁷ And he sayde vnto them: What maner of communicacions are these that ye have one to another as ye walke and are sadde.

¹⁸ And the one of them named Cleophas answered and sayd vnto him: arte thou only a straunger in Ierusalem and haste not knowen the thinges which have chaunsed therin in these dayes?

³ They entered in, but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

⁵ As the women were filled with fear and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to the women, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

⁷ saying that the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.”

¹⁸ And one, whose name was Cleopas, answered, and said to him, Thou thyself art a pilgrim in Jerusalem, and hast thou not known, what things be done in it in these days?

¹⁷ And he said to them, What be these words, that ye speak together wandering, and ye be sorrowful? (And he asked them, What be these things, that ye talk about as ye be walking, and ye be so sad?)

¹⁸ And one, whose name was Cleopas, answered, and said to him, Thou thyself art a pilgrim in Jerusalem (or Thou thyself art a visitor, or a stranger, in Jerusalem), or Thou alone art a pilgrim in Jerusalem (or Thou art alone and a visitor, or a stranger, in Jerusalem), and (so) hast thou not known, what things be done in it in these days?

⁴ And it was don, the while thei weren astonyed in thouyt of this thing, lo! twei men stoden bisidis hem in schynynge cloth.

⁵ And whanne thei dredden, and boweden her semblaunt in to the erthe, thei seiden to hem, What seken ye hym that lyueth with deed men?

⁶ He is not here, but is risun. Haue ye mynde, hou he spak to you, whanne he was yit in Galile,

⁷ and seide, For it bihoueth mannys sone to be bitakun in to the hondis of synful men, and to be crucified, and the thridde dai to rise ayen.

¹¹ And these wordis weren seyn bifor hem as madnesse, and thei bileueden not to hem.

¹⁸ And oon, whos name was Cleofas, answerde, and seide, Thou thi silf art a pilgrym in Jerusalem, and hast thou not knowun, what thingis ben don in it in these daies?

¹¹ and their sayings appeared before them as idle talk, and they were not believing them.

¹² And Peter having risen, did run to the tomb, and having stooped down he seeth the linen clothes lying alone, and he went away to his own home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

¹⁸ And the one, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, 'Art thou alone such a stranger in Jerusalem, that thou hast not known the things that came to pass in it in these days?'
