⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.

⁸ And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

⁹ And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time.

¹⁰ And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

¹¹ And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

¹² And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth.

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

¹⁷ But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.

¹⁹ And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:

⁷ And they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:

⁷ So they replied, “We (exc) do not know where John got his authority.”

⁸ Then Jesus said to them, “ Because you did not answer my question, I will not tell you who authorized me to do those things here yesterday.”

⁹ Then Jesus told the people this parable to illustrate what God would do to the Jews who rejected the former prophets and himself: “A certain man planted a vineyard. He rented the vineyard to some men to care for it and to give him some of the grapes in return. Then he went to another country and stayed there several years.

¹⁰ When the vines started producing grapes, he sent a servant to the men who were taking care of the vineyard. He expected that they would give him some of the grapes that the vineyard had produced. But after the servant arrived, they beat him and they did not give him any grapes. They just sent him away.

¹¹ Later, the owner sent another servant. But they beat him and mistreated him also. They sent him away without giving him any grapes.

¹² Still later, the owner sent another servant. That one they wounded and threw him out of the vineyard.

¹³ So the owner of the vineyard thought to himself, ‘◄I do not know what to do!/What shall I do?► RHQ’ Then he had an idea. He thought to himself, ‘I will send my son, whom I love very much. Perhaps they will respect him and give him my share of the grapes.’

¹⁴ So he sent his son, but when the men who were caring for the vineyard saw him coming, they said to each other, ‘Here comes the man who will some day inherit the vineyard. Let's kill him so that this vineyard will be ours!’

¹⁵ So they dragged him outside the vineyard and they killed him. So ◄I will tell you what the owner of the vineyard will do to them!/do you know what the owner of the vineyard will do to them?► RHQ

¹⁶ He will come and kill those men who were taking care of the vineyard. Then he will arrange for other people to take care of it.” When the people listening to Jesus heard that, they said, “ We would not do anything like those wicked men did!”

¹⁷ But Jesus looked directly at them and said, “You can say that, but think about the meaning of these words that are written {which a prophet wrote} RHQ in the Scriptures, The men who were building a house rejected a certain stone. But others put that same stone in its proper place, and it has become the most important stone in the building MET.

¹⁸ That stone represents me, the Messiah, and those who reject me are like people who fall on this stone. Everyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces {This stone will break to pieces everyone who falls on it}, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the men who taught the Jewish laws realized that he was accusing them when he told the parable about what those wicked men did. So they immediately tried to find a way to seize MTY him, but they did not seize him, because they were afraid of what the people there would do if they did that.

²⁰ So they watched him carefully. They also hired ◄spies/secret agents► who pretended to be sincere. But they really wanted to get him to say something for which they could accuse him. They wanted to be able to turn him over to the authority of the governor of the province. But they also knew that the Jews were disgusted with having to pay taxes to the government.

²¹ So one of them asked Jesus, “Teacher, we (exc) know that you (sg) speak and teach what is right. You tell the truth even if important people do not like it. You teach truthfully what God wants us to do.

⁷ They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.

⁸ Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

¹⁰ At the proper season, he sent a servant to the farmers to collect his share of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty.

¹¹ He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

¹² He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him and threw him out.

¹³ The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’

¹⁴ “But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’

¹⁵ Then they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard that, they said, “May that never be!”

¹⁷ But he looked at them and said, “Then what is this that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected was made the chief cornerstone?’

¹⁸ Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whomever it falls on to dust.”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him that very hour, but they feared the people—for they knew he had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ They watched him and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and aren’t partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

⁷ And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from.

⁸ And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.

⁹ And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time.

¹⁰ And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.

¹¹ And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.

¹² And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.

¹³ And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.

¹⁴ But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.

¹⁵ And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?

¹⁶ He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.

¹⁷ But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?

¹⁸ Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.

²⁰ And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.

²¹ And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:

⁷ And they answered, they did not know whence.

⁸ And Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

⁹ And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.

¹⁰ And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent him away empty.

¹¹ And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent him away empty.

¹² And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast him out.

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.

¹⁵ And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!

¹⁷ But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?

¹⁸ Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.

²⁰ And having watched him, they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in his language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no man's person, but teachest with truth the way of God:

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.

⁸ And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.

¹² And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

¹³ Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.

¹⁴ Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.

¹⁷ But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

¹⁰ Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the farmers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers flogged him and sent him away empty-handed.

¹¹ And again he sent another servant; and they flogged him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

¹² And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and threw him out.

¹³ “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps when they see him they will respect him.’

²¹ Then they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly, and You do not show favoritism, but teach the way of God in truth:

⁷ So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

⁹ Then He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, leased it to farmers, and went away on a long journey.

¹⁰ At the proper time he sent a slave to the farmers, that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers flogged him and sent him away empty-handed.

¹¹ Again he sent a different slave; so they flogged him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

¹² And again he sent a third; but they wounded him also and threw him out.

¹³ Then the owner of the vineyard said: ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; hopefully they will respect him when they see him.’

¹⁴ But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying: ‘This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.’

¹⁵ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy those farmers and give the vineyard to others.” Having heard it they said, “May it never be!”

¹⁷ Then He looked directly at them and said: “What then is this that is written: ‘A stone that the builders rejected, the same became the cornerstone’?

¹⁸ Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it should fall—it will crush him!”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the scribes wanted to lay hands on Him right then, but they were afraid —they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ Keeping a close watch on Him, they sent spies, who pretended to be innocent, so that they might latch on to something He said, so as to hand Him over to the power and the authority of the governor.

²¹ So they questioned Him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and you do not show favoritism but teach the way of God in truth.

⁷ So they answered, “We don't know where it came from.”

⁸ Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you by whose authority I do what I do.”

⁹ Then he began to tell the people a story: “Once there was a man who planted a vineyard, leased it to some farmers, and went to live in another country for a long while.

¹⁰ At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenant farmers to collect his share of the crop, but the farmers beat the servant and sent him away with nothing.

¹¹ So the owner sent another servant, but they beat him too and treated him shamefully, and sent him away with nothing.

¹² So he sent a third servant, but they wounded him and threw him out.

¹³ The owner of the vineyard asked himself, ‘What shall I do? I know, I'll send my son whom I love. Perhaps they will respect him.’

¹⁴ But when they saw him coming, the farmers said to themselves, ‘This is the owner's heir. Let's kill him! That way we can take his inheritance.’

¹⁵ They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and kill these farmers and let others have the vineyard.” When they heard the story, they said, “May this never happen!”

¹⁷ But Jesus looked at them and said, “Then why is it written in the Scriptures, ‘The stone the builders rejected has now become the chief cornerstone’?

¹⁸ Anyone who falls on that stone will be broken in pieces; anyone it falls upon will be crushed.”

¹⁹ Immediately the religious teachers and the chief priests wanted to arrest him because they realized that the story Jesus told was aimed at them, but they were afraid of what the people would do.

²⁰ Watching for an opportunity they sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They tried to catch Jesus out in something he said so they could hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ They said, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is good and right, and that you're not swayed by the opinions of others. You truly teach the way of God.

⁷ Therefore they answered, that they could not tell whence it was.

⁸ Then Iesus sayd vnto them, Neither tell I you, by what authoritie I doe these things.

⁹ Then began he to speake to ye people this parable, A certaine man planted a vineyarde, and let it forth to husbandmen: and went into a strange countrey, for a great time.

¹⁰ And at the time conuenient he sent a seruant to the husbandmen, that they should giue him of the fruite of the vineyard: but the husbandmen did beate him, and sent him away emptie.

¹¹ Againe he sent yet another seruant: and they did beate him, and foule entreated him, and sent him away emptie.

¹² Moreouer he sent the third, and him they wounded, and cast out.

¹³ Then sayd the Lord of the vineyard, What shall I doe? I will send my beloued sonne: it may be that they will doe reuerence, when they see him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen sawe him, they reasoned with themselues, saying, This is the heire: come, let vs kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ So they cast him out of the vineyarde, and killed him. What shall the Lord of the vineyarde therefore doe vnto them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and wil giue out his vineyard to others. But when they heard it, they sayd, God forbid.

¹⁷ And he beheld them, and said, What meaneth this then that is written, The stone that the builders refused, that is made the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Whosoeuer shall fall vpon that stone, shall be broken: and on whomsoeuer it shall fall, it will grinde him to pouder.

¹⁹ Then the hie Priests, and the Scribes the same houre went about to lay hands on him: (but they feared the people) for they perceiued that he had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should faine themselues iust men, to take him in his talke, and to deliuer him vnto the power and authoritie of the gouernour.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest, and teachest right, neither doest thou accept mans person, but teachest the way of God truely.

²¹ They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and are not partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

⁸ And Iesus sayde vnto them: nether tell I you by what auctorite I do these thinges.

¹⁵ And they casted him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What shall then the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He shall come, and destroy these tillers, and give the vineyard to others. And when this thing was heard, they said to him, God forbid.

¹⁸ Each that shall fall on that stone, shall be bruised or be broken, but on whom it shall fall, it shall all-break him or it shall break him into small parts.

¹⁹ And the princes of priests, and the scribes, sought to lay on him hands or to lay hands on him in that hour, and they dreaded the people; for they knew that to them he said this likeness.

²⁰ And they espied, and sent spies, that feigned themselves just, that they should take him in word, and betake him to the power of the prince, and to the power of the justice.

²¹ And they asked him, and said, Master, we know, that rightly thou sayest and teachest or that thou sayest and teachest rightly; and thou takest not the person of man, but thou teachest in truth the way of God.

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not, of whence it was.

¹¹ And he thought yet to send another servant; and also they beat this (man), and tormented him sore, and let him go (away) void (or and sent him away empty-handed).

¹² And he thought yet to send the third, and him also they wounded, and casted him out (or and threw him out).

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I shall send my dearworthy son; peradventure, when they see him, they shall dread (him), or they shall be ashamed (in his presence), (or perhaps, when they see him, they shall fear him, or surely, when they see him, they shall show reverence, or respect, for him).

¹⁴ And when the tillers saw him, they thought within themselves, and said, This is the heir, slay we him, that the heritage be ours. (But when the farmers saw him, they said to each other, He is the heir, let us kill him, and then the inheritance shall be ours.)

¹⁵ And they casted him out of the vineyard (or And they threw him out of the vineyard), and killed him. What shall then the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He shall come, and destroy these tillers, and give the vineyard to others. And when this thing was heard, they said to him, God forbid.

¹⁷ But he beheld them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which men building reproved, this is made into the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Each that shall fall on that stone, shall be bruised or shall be broken, but on whom it shall fall, it shall all-break him, or it shall break him into small parts, (or it shall break him all to pieces).

¹⁹ And the princes of (the) priests, and (the) scribes, sought to lay on him hands in that hour, or And the princes of the priests, and the scribes, sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they dreaded the people; for they knew that to them he said this likeness. (And the high priests, and the scribes, wanted to lay their hands on him at that time, but they feared the people; for they knew that he had said this parable about them.)

²⁰ And they espied, and sent spies, that feigned themselves (to be) just, that they should take him in word, and betake him to the power of the prince, and to the power of the justice. (And they watched him, and sent spies, who pretended to be righteous, or honest men, so that they could catch him with his own words, and then deliver him unto the power and the authority of the Governor.)

²¹ And they asked him, and said, Master (or Teacher), we know, that rightly thou sayest and teachest, or Master, we know, that thou sayest and teachest rightly; and thou takest not the person of man (or and thou favourest not any person), but thou teachest in truth the way of God.

⁷ And thei answeriden, that thei knewen not, of whennus it was.

⁸ And Jhesus seide to hem, Nether Y seie to you, in what power Y do these thingis.

⁹ And he bigan to seie to the puple this parable. A man plauntide a vynyerd, and hiride it to tilieris; and he was in pilgrimage longe tyme.

¹⁰ And in the tyme of gaderynge of grapis, he sente a seruaunt to the tilieris, that thei schulden yyue to hym of the fruyt of the vynyerd; whiche beten hym, and leten hym go voide.

¹¹ And he thouyte yit to sende another seruaunt; and thei beten this, and turmentiden hym sore, and leten hym go.

¹² And he thouyte yit to sende the thridde, and hym also thei woundiden, and castiden out.

¹³ And the lord of the vyneyerd seide, What schal Y do? Y schal sende my dereworthe sone; perauenture, whanne thei seen hym, thei schulen drede.

¹⁴ And whanne the tilieris sayn hym, thei thouyten with ynne hem silf, and seiden, This is the eire, sle we hym, that the eritage be oure.

¹⁵ And thei castiden hym out of the vyneyerd, and killiden hym. What schal thanne the lord of the vyneyerd do to hem?

¹⁶ He schal come, and distruye these tilieris, and yyue the vyneyerd to othere. And whanne this thing was herd, thei seiden to hym, God forbede.

¹⁷ But he bihelde hem, and seide, What thanne is this that is writun, The stoon which men bildynge repreueden, this is maad in to the heed of the corner?

¹⁸ Ech that schal falle on that stoon, schal be to-brisid, but on whom it schal falle, it schal al to-breke him.

¹⁹ And the princis of prestis, and scribis, souyten to leye on hym hoondis in that our, and thei dredden the puple; for thei knewen that to hem he seide this liknesse.

²⁰ And thei aspieden, and senten aspieris, that feyneden hem iust, that thei schulden take hym in word, and bitaak hym to the `power of the prince, and to the power of the iustice.

²¹ And thei axiden hym, and seiden, Maister, we witen, that riytli thou seist and techist; and thou takist not the persoone of man, but thou techist in treuthe the weie of God.

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was,

⁸ and Jesus said to them, 'Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

⁹ And he began to speak unto the people this simile: 'A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,

¹⁰ and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send him away empty.

¹¹ 'And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;

¹² and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.

¹³ 'And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son — the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;

¹⁴ and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;

¹⁵ and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed him; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, 'Let it not be!'

¹⁷ and he, having looked upon them, said, 'What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected — this became head of a corner?

¹⁸ every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.

²⁰ And, having watched him, they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

²¹ and they questioned him, saying, 'Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;
