⁵ And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him?

⁶ But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.

⁸ And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

⁹ And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time.

¹⁰ And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

¹¹ And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

¹² And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth.

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

¹⁷ But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.

¹⁹ And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person of any, but of a truth teachest the way of God:

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not?

²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,

²⁴ Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Cæsar’s.

²⁵ And he said unto them, Then render unto Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.

²⁶ And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

²⁷ And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection;

¹³ Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

¹⁶ He shall come and destroy these husbandmen, and shall give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

¹⁷ And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them.

²⁰ And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no?

²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?

²⁴ Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cæsar’s.

⁵ They discussed this among themselves. They said, “ If we(inc) say, ‘ It was from God MTY/EUP,’ he will say to us, ‘ Then ◄you should have believed John's message!/why did you not believe what John preached?► RHQ’

⁶ But if we say, ‘It was from people,’ the people here will kill us by throwing stones at us, because they all believe that John was a prophet from God.”

⁷ So they replied, “We (exc) do not know where John got his authority.”

⁸ Then Jesus said to them, “ Because you did not answer my question, I will not tell you who authorized me to do those things here yesterday.”

⁹ Then Jesus told the people this parable to illustrate what God would do to the Jews who rejected the former prophets and himself: “A certain man planted a vineyard. He rented the vineyard to some men to care for it and to give him some of the grapes in return. Then he went to another country and stayed there several years.

¹⁰ When the vines started producing grapes, he sent a servant to the men who were taking care of the vineyard. He expected that they would give him some of the grapes that the vineyard had produced. But after the servant arrived, they beat him and they did not give him any grapes. They just sent him away.

¹¹ Later, the owner sent another servant. But they beat him and mistreated him also. They sent him away without giving him any grapes.

¹² Still later, the owner sent another servant. That one they wounded and threw him out of the vineyard.

¹³ So the owner of the vineyard thought to himself, ‘◄I do not know what to do!/What shall I do?► RHQ’ Then he had an idea. He thought to himself, ‘I will send my son, whom I love very much. Perhaps they will respect him and give him my share of the grapes.’

¹⁴ So he sent his son, but when the men who were caring for the vineyard saw him coming, they said to each other, ‘Here comes the man who will some day inherit the vineyard. Let's kill him so that this vineyard will be ours!’

¹⁵ So they dragged him outside the vineyard and they killed him. So ◄I will tell you what the owner of the vineyard will do to them!/do you know what the owner of the vineyard will do to them?► RHQ

¹⁶ He will come and kill those men who were taking care of the vineyard. Then he will arrange for other people to take care of it.” When the people listening to Jesus heard that, they said, “ We would not do anything like those wicked men did!”

¹⁷ But Jesus looked directly at them and said, “You can say that, but think about the meaning of these words that are written {which a prophet wrote} RHQ in the Scriptures, The men who were building a house rejected a certain stone. But others put that same stone in its proper place, and it has become the most important stone in the building MET.

¹⁸ That stone represents me, the Messiah, and those who reject me are like people who fall on this stone. Everyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces {This stone will break to pieces everyone who falls on it}, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”

¹⁹ The chief priests and the men who taught the Jewish laws realized that he was accusing them when he told the parable about what those wicked men did. So they immediately tried to find a way to seize MTY him, but they did not seize him, because they were afraid of what the people there would do if they did that.

²⁰ So they watched him carefully. They also hired ◄spies/secret agents► who pretended to be sincere. But they really wanted to get him to say something for which they could accuse him. They wanted to be able to turn him over to the authority of the governor of the province. But they also knew that the Jews were disgusted with having to pay taxes to the government.

²¹ So one of them asked Jesus, “Teacher, we (exc) know that you (sg) speak and teach what is right. You tell the truth even if important people do not like it. You teach truthfully what God wants us to do.

²² So tell us what you think about this matter: Is it right that we pay taxes to the Roman government MTY, or not?”

²³ But Jesus knew that they were trying to trick him to get him into trouble, either with the Jews, who hated to pay those taxes, or with the Roman government. So he said to them,

²⁴ “Show me a Roman coin. Then tell me whose picture is on it. And tell me whose name is on it.” They showed him a coin and said, “It has the picture and name of Caesar, the head of the Roman government.”

²⁵ He said to them, “In that case, give to the government MTY what they require, and give to God what he requires.”

²⁶ While the people were there, the spies were unable to find fault with him for what he said. And they were amazed at his answer. So they said nothing.

²⁷ Some Sadducees came to Jesus. They are a Jewish sect who do not believe that people will become alive again after they die.

⁵ They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’

⁶ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

⁷ They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.

⁸ Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

¹¹ He sent yet another servant, and they also beat him and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

¹² He sent yet a third, and they also wounded him and threw him out.

¹³ The lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be that seeing him, they will respect him.’

¹⁴ “But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’

¹⁵ Then they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard that, they said, “May that never be!”

¹⁷ But he looked at them and said, “Then what is this that is written, ‘The stone which the builders rejected was made the chief cornerstone?’

¹⁸ Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but it will crush whomever it falls on to dust.”

⁷ And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from.

⁸ And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.

⁹ And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time.

¹⁰ And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.

¹¹ And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.

¹² And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.

¹³ And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.

¹⁴ But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.

¹⁵ And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?

¹⁶ He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.

¹⁷ But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?

¹⁸ Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.

²⁰ And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.

²¹ And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:

²² Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?

²³ But he saw through their trick and said to them,

²⁴ Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.

²⁵ And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.

²⁶ And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing.

²⁷ And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him,

⁵ And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?

⁶ but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

¹² And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast him out.

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect him.

¹⁴ But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.

¹⁵ And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!

¹⁷ But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?

¹⁸ Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

²⁰ And having watched him, they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in his language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no man's person, but teachest with truth the way of God:

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

²³ But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?

²⁴ Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.

²⁵ And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.

²⁶ And they were not able to take hold of him in his expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.

²⁷ And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up to him,

⁵ But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him?

⁶ But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.

⁸ And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.

¹³ Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.

¹⁴ Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.

¹⁷ But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.

²⁰ And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.

⁶ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

⁷ So they answered that they did not know where it was from.

²⁶ They were unable to latch on to His word in front of the people; and marveling at His answer they kept silent.

²⁷ Then some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, approached and questioned Him,

⁵ They talked about it among themselves: “If we say it was from heaven, he'll ask, ‘Then why didn't you believe him?’

⁶ And if we say it was just human, everybody will stone us for they're sure John was a prophet.”

⁷ So they answered, “We don't know where it came from.”

⁸ Jesus replied, “Then I won't tell you by whose authority I do what I do.”

⁹ Then he began to tell the people a story: “Once there was a man who planted a vineyard, leased it to some farmers, and went to live in another country for a long while.

¹⁰ At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenant farmers to collect his share of the crop, but the farmers beat the servant and sent him away with nothing.

¹¹ So the owner sent another servant, but they beat him too and treated him shamefully, and sent him away with nothing.

¹² So he sent a third servant, but they wounded him and threw him out.

¹³ The owner of the vineyard asked himself, ‘What shall I do? I know, I'll send my son whom I love. Perhaps they will respect him.’

¹⁴ But when they saw him coming, the farmers said to themselves, ‘This is the owner's heir. Let's kill him! That way we can take his inheritance.’

¹⁵ They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Now what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and kill these farmers and let others have the vineyard.” When they heard the story, they said, “May this never happen!”

¹⁷ But Jesus looked at them and said, “Then why is it written in the Scriptures, ‘The stone the builders rejected has now become the chief cornerstone’?

¹⁸ Anyone who falls on that stone will be broken in pieces; anyone it falls upon will be crushed.”

¹⁹ Immediately the religious teachers and the chief priests wanted to arrest him because they realized that the story Jesus told was aimed at them, but they were afraid of what the people would do.

²⁰ Watching for an opportunity they sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They tried to catch Jesus out in something he said so they could hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ They said, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is good and right, and that you're not swayed by the opinions of others. You truly teach the way of God.

²² So should we pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

²³ But Jesus saw through their trickery, and said to them,

²⁴ “Show me a coin—a denarius. Whose image and inscription is on it?” “Caesar's,” they answered.

²⁵ “Then give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give back to God what belongs to God,” he told them.

²⁶ They weren't able to trap him by what he told the people. They were stunned at his reply, and fell silent.

²⁷ Then some of the Sadducees, who deny the resurrection, came to Jesus with this question:

⁵ And they reasoned within themselues, saying, If we shall say, From heauen, he will say, Why then beleeued ye him not?

⁶ But if we shall say, Of men, all the people will stone vs: for they be perswaded that Iohn was a Prophet.

²⁰ They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be upright, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

²¹ They asked him, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and are not partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

²² Does Torah ·Teaching· permit us to pay taxes to Caesar Ruler, or not?”

⁵ And they thought with in them selves sayinge: yf we shall saye from heaven: he will saye: why then beleved ye him not?

⁸ And Iesus sayde vnto them: nether tell I you by what auctorite I do these thinges.

⁹ Then begane he to put forthe to the people this similitude. A certayne man planted a vyneyarde and let it forthe to fermers and went him selfe into a straunge countre for a greate season.

¹⁰ And when the tyme was come he sent a servaut to his tennauntes that they shuld geve him of the frutes of the vyneyarde. And the tennauntes dyd bet him and sent him awaye empty.

¹¹ And agayne he sent yet another servaunt. And they dyd bet him and foule entreated him also and sent him awaye emptye.

¹² More over he sent the thyrde to and him they wouded and cast out.

¹³ Then sayde the lorde of the vyneyarde: what shall I do? I will sende my deare sonne him peradventure they will reverence when they se him.

¹⁴ But when the fermers sawe him they thought in them selves sayinge: this is the heyre come let vs kyll him that the inheritaunce maye be oures.

¹⁵ And they cast him out of the vyneyarde and kylled him. Now what shall the Lorde of the vyneyarde do vnto them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroye those fermers and will let out his vyneyarde to other. When they hearde that they sayde: God forbyd.

¹⁷ And he behelde them and sayde: what meaneth this then that is wrytten: The stone that the bylders refused the same is made the heed corner stone?

¹⁸ whosoever stomble at that stone shalbe broken: but on whosoever it faul vpon it wyll grynde him to powder.

¹⁹ And the hye Prestes and the Scribes the same howre went about to laye hondes on him but they feared the people. For they perceaved that he had spoken this similitude agaynst them.

²⁰ And they watched him and sent forth spies which shuld fayne them selves perfecte to take him in his wordes and to delyvre him vnto the power and auctorite of the debite.

²¹ And they axed him sayinge: Master we knowe that thou sayest and teachest ryght nother cosiderest thou eny manes degre but teachest the waye of God truly.

²² Ys it laufull for vs to geve Cesar tribute or no?

²³ He perceaved their craftynes and sayde vnto them: why tept ye me?

²⁴ Shewe me a peny. Whose ymage and superscripcion hath it? They answered and sayde: Cesars.

²⁵ And he sayde vnto them: Geve then vnto Cesar that which belongeth vnto Cesar: and to God that which pertayneth to God.

²⁶ And they coulde not reprove his sayinge before the people. But they marvayled at his answer and helde their peace.

²⁷ Then came to him certayne of the Saduces which denye that ther is eny resurreccion. And they axed him

⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”

⁷ So they answered that they did not know where it came from.

⁸ Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

⁹ He told the people this parable, “A man planted a vineyard, rented it out to vine growers, and went into another country for a long time.

¹⁰ At the appointed time he sent a servant to the vine growers, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. But the vine growers beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

¹¹ He then sent yet another servant and they also beat him, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

¹² He also sent yet a third and they also wounded him, and threw him out.

¹³ So the lord of the vineyard said, 'What will I do? I will send my beloved son. Maybe they will respect him.'

¹⁴ But when the vine growers saw him, they discussed among themselves, saying, 'This is the heir. Let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.'

¹⁵ They threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come and destroy these vine growers, and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard it, they said, “May it never be!”

¹⁷ But Jesus looked at them, and said, “What is the meaning of that which is written: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone'?

¹⁸ Every one who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces. But on whomever it falls, it will crush.”

¹⁹ So the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour, for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

²⁰ Watching him carefully, they sent out spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might find fault with his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.

²¹ They asked him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach rightly, and are not influenced by anyone's position, but you teach the truth about the way of God.

²² Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”

¹² And he thought yet to send the third, and him also they wounded, and casted him out.

¹³ And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I shall send my dearworthy son; peradventure, when they see him, they shall dread or they shall be ashamed.

¹⁴ And when the tillers saw him, they thought within themselves, and said, This is the heir, slay we him, that the heritage be ours.

¹⁵ And they casted him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What shall then the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He shall come, and destroy these tillers, and give the vineyard to others. And when this thing was heard, they said to him, God forbid.

¹⁷ But he beheld them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which men building reproved, this is made into the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Each that shall fall on that stone, shall be bruised or be broken, but on whom it shall fall, it shall all-break him or it shall break him into small parts.

¹⁹ And the princes of priests, and the scribes, sought to lay on him hands or to lay hands on him in that hour, and they dreaded the people; for they knew that to them he said this likeness.

²⁰ And they espied, and sent spies, that feigned themselves just, that they should take him in word, and betake him to the power of the prince, and to the power of the justice.

²¹ And they asked him, and said, Master, we know, that rightly thou sayest and teachest or that thou sayest and teachest rightly; and thou takest not the person of man, but thou teachest in truth the way of God.

²² Is it leaveful to us to give tribute to the emperor or to Caesar, or nay?

²³ And he beheld the deceit of them, and said to them, What tempt ye me?

²⁴ Show ye to me a penny; whose image and superscription hath it? They answered, and said to him, The emperor’s or Caesar’s.

²⁵ And he said to them, Yield ye therefore to the emperor those things that be the emperor’s or to Caesar those things that be Caesar’s, and those things that be of God, to God.

¹⁶ He shall come, and destroy these tillers, and give the vineyard to others. And when this thing was heard, they said to him, God forbid.

¹³ And the lord of the vyneyerd seide, What schal Y do? Y schal sende my dereworthe sone; perauenture, whanne thei seen hym, thei schulen drede.

¹⁴ And whanne the tilieris sayn hym, thei thouyten with ynne hem silf, and seiden, This is the eire, sle we hym, that the eritage be oure.

¹⁵ And thei castiden hym out of the vyneyerd, and killiden hym. What schal thanne the lord of the vyneyerd do to hem?

¹⁶ He schal come, and distruye these tilieris, and yyue the vyneyerd to othere. And whanne this thing was herd, thei seiden to hym, God forbede.

¹⁷ But he bihelde hem, and seide, What thanne is this that is writun, The stoon which men bildynge repreueden, this is maad in to the heed of the corner?

¹⁸ Ech that schal falle on that stoon, schal be to-brisid, but on whom it schal falle, it schal al to-breke him.

¹⁹ And the princis of prestis, and scribis, souyten to leye on hym hoondis in that our, and thei dredden the puple; for thei knewen that to hem he seide this liknesse.

²⁰ And thei aspieden, and senten aspieris, that feyneden hem iust, that thei schulden take hym in word, and bitaak hym to the `power of the prince, and to the power of the iustice.

²¹ And thei axiden hym, and seiden, Maister, we witen, that riytli thou seist and techist; and thou takist not the persoone of man, but thou techist in treuthe the weie of God.

²² Is it leueful to vs to yyue tribute to the emperoure, or nay?

²³ And he biheld the disseit of hem, and seide to hem, What tempten ye me?

²⁴ Shewe ye to me a peny; whos ymage and superscripcioun hath it? Thei answerden, and seiden to hym, The emperouris.

²⁵ And he seide to hem, Yelde ye therfor to the emperoure tho thingis that ben the emperours, and tho thingis that ben of God, to God.

²⁶ And thei myyten not repreue his word bifor the puple; and thei wondriden in his answere, and heelden pees.

²⁷ Summe of the Saduceis, that denyeden the ayenrisyng fro deeth to lijf, camen, and axiden hym,

⁵ And they reasoned with themselves, saying — 'If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?

⁶ and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'

⁷ And they answered, that they knew not whence it was,

⁸ and Jesus said to them, 'Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

⁹ And he began to speak unto the people this simile: 'A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,

¹⁰ and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send him away empty.

¹¹ 'And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;

¹² and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.

¹³ 'And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son — the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;

¹⁴ and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;

¹⁵ and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed him; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, 'Let it not be!'

¹⁷ and he, having looked upon them, said, 'What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected — this became head of a corner?

¹⁸ every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.

²⁰ And, having watched him, they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

²¹ and they questioned him, saying, 'Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;

²² Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

²³ And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, 'Why me do ye tempt?

²⁴ shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, 'Of Caesar:'

²⁵ and he said to them, 'Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

²⁶ and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent.

²⁷ And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,
