Luke 17:1-5 in English

¹ And he said unto his disciples, It is impossible but that occasions of stumbling should come; but woe unto him, through whom they come!

² It were well for him if a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, rather than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.

³ Take heed to yourselves: if thy brother sin, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.

⁴ And if he sin against thee seven times in the day, and seven times turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

⁵ And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

¹ One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that will tempt people to sin are certain to happen, but it will be terrible for anyone who causes them to happen!

² Suppose you caused one of these people who do not believe in me very strongly to sin. If a huge stone was fastened {someone fastened a huge stone} around your neck and you were thrown {and threw you} into the sea, you would consider that a severe punishment, but God will punish you even more severely if you cause someone to sin!

³ Be careful how you act. If you know about a fellow believer who sins, you (sg) should rebuke him. If he says that he is sorry for having sinned and asks you to forgive him, forgive him.

⁴ Even if he sins against you (sg) seven times in one day, if he comes to you each time and says, ‘I am sorry for what I did’, you must continue forgiving him.”

⁵ One day the apostles said to the Lord, “Help us to trust in you (OR, in God) more strongly!”

³ Give attention to yourselves: if your brother does wrong, say a sharp word to him; and if he has sorrow for his sin, let him have forgiveness.

⁴ And if he does you wrong seven times in a day, and seven times comes to you and says, I have regret for what I have done; let him have forgiveness.

⁵ And the twelve said to the Lord, Make our faith greater.

¹ And he said to his disciples, It cannot be but that offences come, but woe to him by whom they come!

² It would be more profitable for him if a millstone were hanged about his neck and he cast into the sea, than that he should be a snare to one of these little ones.

³ Take heed to yourselves: if thy brother should sin, rebuke him; and if he should repent, forgive him.

⁴ And if he should sin against thee seven times in the day, and seven times should return to thee, saying, I repent, thou shalt forgive him.

⁵ And the apostles said to the Lord, Give more faith to us.

¹ And he said to his disciples: It is impossible that scandals should not come: but woe to him through whom they come.

² It were better for him, that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should scandalize one of these little ones.

³ Take heed to yourselves. If thy brother sin against thee, reprove him: and if he do penance, forgive him.

⁴ And if he sin against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day be converted unto thee, saying, I repent; forgive him.

⁵ And the apostles said to the Lord: Increase our faith.

¹ Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible for offenses not to come, but woe to the one through whom they do come!

² It would be better for him if a millstone were around his neck, and he be cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

¹ Jesus said to his disciples, “Temptations are unavoidable, but it will be a disaster for those through whom they come!

² For such people it would be better to have a millstone hung around the neck and be thrown into the sea than to cause these little ones to sin.

³ So take care what you do. If your brother sins, warn him; and if he repents, forgive him.

⁴ Even if he sins against you seven times a day, and seven times comes back and tells you, ‘I'm really sorry,’ forgive him.”

⁵ The apostles said to the Lord, “Help us to have more trust!”

² It is better for him that a great milstone were hanged about his necke, and that he were cast into ye sea, then that he should offende one of these litle ones.

³ Take heede to your selues: if thy brother trespasse against thee, rebuke him: and if hee repent, forgiue him.

⁴ And though he sinne against thee seuen times in a day, and seuen times in a day turne againe to thee, saying, It repenteth mee, thou shalt forgiue him.

¹ Jesus said to his disciples, “It is inevitable that there should be temptations but sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!

² It would be good for them if they had been flung into the sea with a millstone around their neck, rather than that they should prove a trap even one of these little ones.

³ Be on your guard! If your brother or sister does wrong, rebuke them; but if they repent, forgive them.

⁴ Even if they wrong you seven times a day, but turns to you every time and says ‘I am sorry,’ you must forgive them.”

⁵ “Give us more faith,” said the apostles to the Master;

⁴ If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times returns, saying, ‘I make teshuvah ·complete repentance·,’ you shall forgive him.”

⁵ The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our trusting faith.”

¹ Jesus said to his followers, “You know, there will always be somebody that will try to make you go wrong and do bad things, but God will punish the person that does that.

² If anyone gets a little one to do something bad, God will properly punish that person. Suppose somebody will get a big rock and tie it to that person’s neck and throw him into the sea and drown him, that will be bad for him, but not as bad as the trouble God will give him for getting that little one to go wrong.

³ So be careful.” Then Jesus said, “If another Christian does something bad to you, and then they say, ‘I’m sorry, I will not do that again,’ then you have to let it go. Don’t think about any payback.

⁴ Maybe they do that a lot, like 7 times in one day, and each time they turn around and say they are sorry. If they do that, you have to let it go every time.”

⁵ The 12 close followers of Jesus said to him, “Show us how to trust you properly.”

¹ Then sayde he to the disciples it can not be avoyded but that offences will come. Neverthelesse wo be to him thorow whom they come.

² It were better for him that a mylstone were hanged aboute his necke and that he were cast into ye see then that he shuld offende one of this lytleons.

³ Take hede to youre selves. If thy brother trespas agaynst the rebuke him: and yf he repent forgeve him.

⁴ And though he sinne agest the .vii. tymes in a daye and seve tymes in a daye tourne agayne to the sayinge: it repenteth me forgeve him

⁵ And the apostles sayde vnto the Lorde: increase oure faith.

¹ Jesus said to his disciples, “It is certain there will be things that can cause us to sin, but woe to that person through whom they come!

² It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.

³ Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

⁴ If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times returns to you, saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him!”

¹ And Jhesu seide to hise disciplis, It is impossible that sclaundris come not; but wo to that man, bi whom thei comen.

² It is more profitable to him, if a mylne stoon be put aboute his necke, and he be cast in to the see, than that he sclaundre oon of these litle.

³ Take ye hede you silf; if thi brothir hath synned ayens thee, blame hym; and if he do penaunce, foryyue hym.

⁴ And if seuene sithis in the dai he do synne ayens thee, and seuene sithis in the dai he be conuertid to thee, and seie, It forthenkith me, foryyue thou hym.

⁵ And the apostlis seiden to the Lord, Encrese to vs feith.

¹ And he said unto the disciples, 'It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come, but woe to him through whom they come;

² it is more profitable to him if a weighty millstone is put round about his neck, and he hath been cast into the sea, than that he may cause one of these little ones to stumble.

³ 'Take heed to yourselves, and, if thy brother may sin in regard to thee, rebuke him, and if he may reform, forgive him,

⁴ and if seven times in the day he may sin against thee, and seven times in the day may turn back to thee, saying, I reform; thou shalt forgive him.'

⁵ And the apostles said to the Lord, 'Add to us faith;'
