Luke 15:6-19 in English

⁶ And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and his neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.

⁷ I say unto you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine righteous persons, who need no repentance.

⁸ Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek diligently until she find it?

⁹ And when she hath found it, she calleth together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost.

¹⁰ Even so, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

¹¹ And he said, A certain man had two sons:

¹² and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of thy substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.

¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.

¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

¹⁶ And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

¹⁷ But when he came to himself he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish here with hunger!

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight:

¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

⁶ When you brought it home, you would call together your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‘Be happy with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’

⁷ I tell you (pl) that similarly God will be very happy about each and every sinner who turns from doing evil. God is not happy about ninety-nine people who think that they are IRO righteous and think that they do not need to turn from doing evil.

⁸ Or, suppose that a woman has ten very valuable silver coins. If she loses one of them, ◄she will certainly light a lamp and sweep the floor and search carefully until she finds it!/will she not light a lamp and sweep the floor and search carefully until she finds it?► RHQ

⁹ When she finds it, she will call together her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Be happy with me, because I have found the coin that I lost!’

¹⁰ I tell you that similarly the angels will be happy about even just one sinner who turns from doing evil.”

¹¹ Then Jesus told them this parable to compare what the Pharisees and teachers of the Jewish law thought about those who turn from their sinful behavior with what God thinks about such people. He said, “A certain man had two sons.

¹² One day the younger son said to his father, ‘Father, I do not want to wait until you(sg) die. Give me now the share of your property that belongs to me!’ So the man divided his property between his two sons.

¹³ A few days later, the younger son sold his share. He gathered his money and other things together and went to a country far away. There he spent all his money foolishly in reckless/wild living.

¹⁴ After he had spent all his money, there was a great famine throughout that country. And soon he did not have enough food to eat.

¹⁵ So he went to one of the landowners in that area and asked for work. The man sent him to work taking care of the pigs in his field.

¹⁶ Because he was very hungry, he would have been glad to eat the bean pods that the pigs ate. But no one gave him anything to eat.

¹⁷ Finally he thought clearly about what he had done. He said to himself, ‘All of my father's hired servants have plenty of food! They have more SYN than they can eat, but here I am dying because I do not have anything to eat HYP!

¹⁸ So I will leave here and go back to my father. I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against God MTY, EUP and against you (sg).

¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called {of you calling me} your son. Just hire me to be like one of the other hired servants.”’

⁶ When he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’

⁷ I tell you that even so there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.

⁸ “Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?

⁹ When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost!’

¹⁰ Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner repenting.”

¹¹ He said, “A certain man had two sons.

¹³ Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.

¹⁴ When he had spent all of it, there arose a severe famine in that country, and he began to be in need.

¹⁵ He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

¹⁶ He wanted to fill his belly with the pods that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.

¹⁷ But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!

¹⁸ I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.

¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’

⁷ I say to you that even so there will be more joy in heaven when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing, than for ninety-nine good men, who have no need of a change of heart.

⁸ Or what woman, having ten bits of silver, if one bit has gone from her hands, will not get a light, and go through her house, searching with care till she sees it?

⁹ And when she has it again, she gets her friends and neighbours together, saying, Be glad with me, for I have got back the bit of silver which had gone from me.

¹⁰ Even so, I say to you, There is joy among the angels of God, when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing.

¹¹ And he said, A certain man had two sons:

¹² And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me that part of your property which will be mine. And he made division of his goods between them.

¹³ And not long after, the younger son got together everything which was his and took a journey into a far-away country, and there all his money went in foolish living.

¹⁴ And when everything was gone, there was no food to be had in that country, and he was in need.

¹⁵ And he went and put himself into the hands of one of the people of that country, and he sent him into his fields to give the pigs their food.

¹⁶ And so great was his need that he would have been glad to take the pigs' food, and no one gave him anything.

¹⁷ But when he came to his senses, he said, What numbers of my father's servants have bread enough, and more, while I am near to death here through need of food!

¹⁸ I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes:

¹⁹ I am no longer good enough to be named your son: make me like one of your servants.

⁶ and being come to the house, calls together the friends and the neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep.

⁷ I say unto you, that thus there shall be joy in heaven for one repenting sinner, more than for ninety and nine righteous who have no need of repentance.

⁸ Or, what woman having ten drachmas, if she lose one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully till she find it?

⁹ and having found it she calls together the friends and neighbours, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma which I had lost.

¹⁰ Thus, I say unto you, there is joy before the angels of God for one repenting sinner.

¹¹ And he said, A certain man had two sons;

¹² and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give to me the share of the property that falls to me. And he divided to them what he was possessed of.

¹³ And after not many days the younger son gathering all together went away into a country a long way off, and there dissipated his property, living in debauchery.

¹⁴ But when he had spent all there arose a violent famine throughout that country, and he began to be in want.

¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

¹⁶ And he longed to fill his belly with the husks which the swine were eating; and no one gave to him.

¹⁷ And coming to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have abundance of bread, and I perish here by famine.

¹⁸ I will rise up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee;

¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

⁶ And coming home, call together his friends and neighbours, saying to them: Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost?

⁷ I say to you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven upon one sinner that doth penance, more than upon ninety-nine just who need not penance.

⁸ Or what woman having ten groats; if she lose one groat, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently until she find it?

⁹ And when she hath found it, call together her friends and neighbours, saying: Rejoice with me, because I have found the groat which I had lost.

¹⁰ So I say to you, there shall be joy before the angels of God upon one sinner doing penance.

¹¹ And he said: A certain man had two sons:

¹² And the younger of them said to his father: Father, give me the portion of substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his substance.

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son, gathering all together, went abroad into a far country: and there wasted his substance, living riotously.

¹⁴ And after he had spent all, there came a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.

¹⁵ And he went and cleaved to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his farm to feed swine.

¹⁶ And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks the swine did eat; and no man gave unto him.

¹⁷ And returning to himself, he said: How many hired servants in my father’s house abound with bread, and I here perish with hunger?

¹⁸ I will arise, and will go to my father, and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee:

¹⁹ I am not worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

⁶ And coming into the house, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’

¹³ And not many days after, having gathered together all things, the younger son went on a journey to a distant country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.

¹⁴ But when he had spent everything, there arose a severe famine throughout that country, and he began to be in need.

¹⁵ Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

¹⁶ And he was longing to fill his stomach with the carob pods which the swine were eating, and no one gave him anything.

¹⁷ “But having come to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have an abundance of bread, and I am perishing with hunger!

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

¹⁹ and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’

¹² And the younger one said to the father, ‘Father, give me the appropriate share of the estate.’ So he divided the property between them.

¹³ Not many days later the younger son, having converted it all, journeyed to a distant country; and there he squandered his wealth living dissolutely.

¹⁴ But when he had spent it all, there was a severe famine throughout that country, and he began to be in need.

¹⁵ Then he went and attached himself to a citizen of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

¹⁶ He would gladly have filled his stomach with the carob pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

¹⁷ But when he came to himself he said: ‘How many of my father's hired servants have an abundance of bread, while I am dying of hunger!

¹⁸ I will get up and go to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you,

¹⁹ and I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired servants.’

⁶ Once he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Come and celebrate with me! I've found my lost sheep!’

⁷ I tell you that there's more joy in heaven over a sinner that repents than over ninety-nine good people who don't need to repent.

⁸ Imagine a woman who has ten silver coins, and loses one of them. Wouldn't she light a lamp and sweep the house, carefully searching until she finds it?

⁹ When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Come and celebrate with me! I've found the silver coin that I lost.’

¹⁰ I tell you there is joy in the presence of God's angels over one sinner that repents.

¹¹ Once there was a man who had two sons,” Jesus explained.

¹² “The younger one told his father, ‘Father, give me my inheritance now.’ So the man divided his property between them.

¹³ A few days later the younger son packed up what he had and left for a distant country. Here he wasted all his money living a reckless life.

¹⁴ After he'd spent everything, the country was hit by a severe famine and he was starving.

¹⁵ So he went and took a job with one of the farmers there who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

¹⁶ He was so hungry that he would have eaten even the pig food, but no one gave him anything.

¹⁷ When he came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘All of my father's workers have more than enough to eat—why am I dying from hunger here?

¹⁸ I'm going home to my father! I'll tell him, Father, I've sinned against heaven and against you.

¹⁹ I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Please treat me as one of your hired workers.’

⁶ And when he commeth home, he calleth together his friendes and neighbours, saying vnto them, Reioyce with mee: for I haue founde my sheepe which was lost.

⁷ I say vnto you, that likewise ioy shall be in heauen for one sinner that conuerteth, more then for ninetie and nine iust men, which neede none amendment of life.

⁸ Either what woman hauing ten groates, if she lose one groate, doth not light a candle, and sweepe the house, and seeke diligently till shee finde it?

⁹ And when shee hath found it, shee calleth her friendes, and neighbours, saying, Reioyce with me: for I haue found the groate which I had lost.

¹⁰ Likewise I say vnto you, there is ioy in the presence of the Angels of God, for one sinner that conuerteth.

¹¹ He sayde moreouer, A certaine man had two sonnes.

¹² And the yonger of them sayde to his father, Father, giue mee the portion of the goods that falleth to mee. So he deuided vnto them his substance.

¹³ So not many daies after, when the yonger sonne had gathered all together, hee tooke his iourney into a farre countrey, and there hee wasted his goods with riotous liuing.

¹⁴ Nowe when hee had spent all, there arose a great dearth throughout that land, and he began to be in necessitie.

¹⁵ Then hee went and claue to a citizen of that conntrey, and hee sent him to his farme, to feede swine.

¹⁶ And hee would faine haue filled his bellie with the huskes, that the swine ate: but no man gaue them him.

¹⁷ Then he came to him selfe, and said, Howe many hired seruaunts at my fathers haue bread ynough, and I die for hunger?

¹⁸ I wil rise and goe to my father, and say vnto him, Father, I haue sinned against heaue, and before thee,

¹⁹ And am no more worthy to be called thy sonne: make me as one of thy hired seruants.

⁶ Then you will call out to all your people, “Come here! This sheep of mine ran away into the bush. Truly I have found it. Now I am very happy. Let us all be happy.”

⁷ Then Jesus said to them, “Yes! You are very happy after picking up your sheep. Like this God up above and his angels will be happy after one person after doing bad (things) returns to God. They are happy about the 99 good people who follow God. Truly they will be very happy about one person who after doing bad turns around in his tracks and returns to follow God.”

⁸ Then Jesus told them this other story. “Maybe a woman might have 10 coins. Then perhaps she will lose one. What will she do? She will light the lamp, she will sweep the house, she will search carefully in every direction.

⁹ When she finds (the coin), she will call to the other people, “Come here! That money that I lost, truly I have found it! Now I am very happy. Let's all be happy!”

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to them, “Yes! Like this God and his angels will be happy about one man returning from his bad ways.”

¹¹ Then he told them this other story. “Yes. Previously there lived a man who had two sons.

¹² One day the youngest one asked their father, “Father, when you die we (du.ex) will get your country. Share this country with us now, give me my share now.” Then truly the father divided it for those two.

¹³ Then the youngest one gave his country to others for money sold it, left home, and went far off to another country. In that country he was making mistakes with all that money. He was drinking, he was gambling playing, truly he messed up his life for himself with all his money.

¹⁴ Then he was puzzling hard, with no money. Then at that time in that country there was no rain, the trees and the grass were dying. The people in that country were staying without food. That youngest one was hungry.

¹⁵ Then he was thinking, “How will I get anything to eat? I will ask them for a job. Then truly they will give me food (in exchange) for work.” He was working for a local person of that country. That local person told him, “Look after my pigs here, and give them food.”

¹⁶ Then he was looking after the pigs. His boss didn't give him anything to eat. He was very hungry for the pigs’ rubbishy food.

¹⁷ At last he realized. “My father’s work men are eating good food till they're full, and I here am starving, from starvation I might die.

¹⁸ I will go, I will return to my father, I will tell him, ‘Father, I have done wrong. I have disobeyed God and I have disobeyed you.

¹⁹ Don't call me your son, just tell me I will be your worker, I will work for you.’#”

⁶ And when he hath come home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.

⁷ I say to you, that in like manner there will be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety-nine righteous men who have no need of repentance.

⁸ Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and search carefully till she findeth it?

⁹ And when she hath found it, she calleth together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I lost.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against Heaven and before thee;

¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants.

⁶ and, on reaching home, he calls his friends and his neighbours together, and says ‘Come and rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’

⁸ Or what woman, if she had ten drachma est. 0.35 oz; est. 10 g coins, if she lost one drachma est. 0.035 oz; est. 1 g coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?

⁹ When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma est. 0.035 oz; est. 1 g which I had lost.’

¹⁰ Even so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner making teshuvah ·complete repentance·.”

¹¹ He said, “A certain man had two sons.

¹² The younger of them said to his father, ‘Abba ·Father familiar, Dear Dad·, give me my share of your property.’ He divided his livelihood between them.

¹³ Not many days after, the younger son gathered all of this together and traveled into a far country. There he wasted his property with riotous living.

¹⁵ He went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs.

¹⁶ He wanted to fill his belly with the husks that the pigs ate, but no one gave him any.

¹⁷ But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many hired servants of my Abba ·Father familiar, Dear Dad· have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!

¹⁸ I will get up and go to my Abba ·Father familiar, Dear Dad·, and will tell him, “ Abba ·Father·, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight.

¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’

⁶ After he gets home he will call out to all his friends. He will say, ‘Hey, I’ve found my lost sheep. We can all be happy together now.’

⁷ Well, it is like that in heaven, too. Whenever one bad person turns around and leaves the bad way, and lives God’s way, everyone in heaven is really happy. They are more happy about that person than they are about the big mob of other people that never went wrong.”

⁸ Jesus told them another picture story. He said, “Suppose a woman has 10 coins, but then she loses one of them in her house. What do you think she will do? She will get a torch and look carefully everywhere in the house. She will even sweep all the floors, and she will keep looking for her money until she finds it.

⁹ Then, after she finds it, she will call out to all her friends, she will say, ‘Hey, I’ve found my lost coin. We can all be happy together now.’

¹⁰ Well, it is like that in heaven, too. Whenever one bad person turns around and leaves the bad way, and lives God’s way, God’s angel messengers in heaven are really happy.”

¹¹ Jesus told the people this picture story. He said, “There was a man who had 2 sons.

¹² One day his youngest son said to him, ‘Dad, I want you to give me my share of all the things you own. I can’t wait to get it after you die. No, I want it all now.’ So his father split up everything he had and gave one part to his youngest son, and he kept the other part for his oldest son.

¹³ A few days later that youngest son sold all those things that his father gave him, then he took the money and went away to another country. In that country he soon spent all his money. He just wasted it on all kinds of things that made him feel good.

¹⁴ After a while he had no money left. At that time they got short of food in that place, and soon that boy had nothing to eat.

¹⁵ So he got a job with a man in that place. He had to look after that man’s pigs.

¹⁶ That boy was so hungry he wanted to eat the garbage that the pigs ate, but nobody gave him anything to eat.

¹⁷ At last he started to think properly. He thought, ‘Those men who work for my dad in his garden back home, they always get enough to eat. But I am getting so hungry that I reckon I will die in this place.

¹⁸ So I will get up now and go back home to my dad, and I will say to him, “Dad, I’m sorry, I went wrong. I did wrong to God, and I did wrong to you.

¹⁹ So now I’m not good enough for you to call me your son, but just let me have a job in your garden. I will work for you, and you can just call me your working man.” ’

⁶ And assone as he cometh home he calleth to gedder his lovers and neghbours sayinge vnto them: reioyse with me for I have founde my shepe which was loost.

⁷ I say vnto you that lyke wyse ioye shalbe in heven over one synner that repenteth moore then over nynety and nyne iuste persons whiche nede noo repentaunce.

⁸ Ether what woman havynge .x. grotes yf she loose one doth not lyght a candell and swepe the housse and seke diligently tyll she fynde it?

⁹ And when she hath founde it she calleth her lovers and her neghbours sayinge: Reioyce with me for I have founde the groate which I had loost.

¹⁰ Lykwyse I saye vnto you ioye is made in the presence of the angels of god over one synner that repenteth.

¹¹ And he sayde: a certayne man had two sonnes

¹² and the yonger of them sayde to his father: father geve me my parte of the goodes that to me belongeth. And he devided vnto them his substaunce.

¹⁸ I will leave here and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

¹³ And not after many days, when all things were gathered together, the younger son went forth in pilgrimage into a far country; and there he wasted his goods or his substance in living lecherously.

¹⁴ And after that he had ended all things, a strong hunger was made in that country, and he began to have need.

¹⁵ And he went, and drew him to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his town, to feed swine or hogs.

¹⁶ And he coveted to fill his womb of the pods that the hogs ate, and no man gave to him.

¹⁷ And he turned again to himself, and said, How many hired men in my father’s house have plenty of loaves; and I perish here through hunger.

¹⁸ I shall rise up, and go to my father, and I shall say to him, Father, I have sinned into or against heaven, and before thee;

¹⁹ and now I am not worthy to be called thy son, make me as one of thine hired men.

⁶ and he cometh home, and calleth together his friends and neighbours, and saith to them, Be ye glad with me, for I have found my sheep, that had perished or that I had lost.

⁶ and clepith togidir hise freendis and neiyboris, and seith to hem, Be ye glad with me, for Y haue founde my scheep, that hadde perischid.

⁷ And Y seie to you, so ioye schal be in heuene on o synful man doynge penaunce, more than on nynti and nyne iuste, that han no nede to penaunce.

⁸ Or what womman hauynge ten besauntis, and if sche hath lost oo besaunt, whether sche teendith not a lanterne, and turneth vpsodoun the hows, and sekith diligentli, til that sche fynde it?

⁹ And whanne sche hath foundun, sche clepith togidir freendis and neiyboris, and seith, Be ye glad with me, for Y haue founde the besaunt, that Y hadde lost.

¹¹ And he seide, A man hadde twei sones;

¹² and the yonger of hem seide to the fadir, Fadir, yyue me the porcioun of catel, that fallith to me. And he departide to hem the catel.

¹³ And not aftir many daies, whanne alle thingis weren gederid togider, the yonger sone wente forth in pilgrymage in to a fer cuntre; and there he wastide hise goodis in lyuynge lecherously.

¹⁴ And aftir that he hadde endid alle thingis, a strong hungre was maad in that cuntre, and he bigan to haue nede.

¹⁵ And he wente, and drouy hym to oon of the citeseyns of that cuntre. And he sente hym in to his toun, to fede swyn.

¹⁶ And he coueitide to fille his wombe of the coddis that the hoggis eeten, and no man yaf hym.

¹⁷ And he turnede ayen to hym silf, and seide, Hou many hirid men in my fadir hous han plente of looues; and Y perische here thorouy hungir.

¹⁸ Y schal rise vp, and go to my fadir, and Y schal seie to hym, Fadir, Y haue synned in to heuene, and bifor thee;

¹⁹ and now Y am not worthi to be clepid thi sone, make me as oon of thin hirid men.

⁶ and having come to the house, he doth call together the friends and the neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep — the lost one.

⁷ 'I say to you, that so joy shall be in the heaven over one sinner reforming, rather than over ninety-nine righteous men, who have no need of reformation.

⁸ 'Or what woman having ten drachms, if she may lose one drachm, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek carefully till that she may find?

⁹ and having found, she doth call together the female friends and the neighbours, saying, Rejoice with me, for I found the drachm that I lost.

¹⁰ 'So I say to you, joy doth come before the messengers of God over one sinner reforming.'

¹¹ And he said, 'A certain man had two sons,

¹² and the younger of them said to the father, Father, give me the portion of the substance falling to me, and he divided to them the living.

¹³ 'And not many days after, having gathered all together, the younger son went abroad to a far country, and there he scattered his substance, living riotously;

¹⁴ and he having spent all, there came a mighty famine on that country, and himself began to be in want;

¹⁵ and having gone on, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him to the fields to feed swine,

¹⁶ and he was desirous to fill his belly from the husks that the swine were eating, and no one was giving to him.

¹⁷ 'And having come to himself, he said, How many hirelings of my father have a superabundance of bread, and I here with hunger am perishing!

¹⁸ having risen, I will go on unto my father, and will say to him, Father, I did sin — to the heaven, and before thee,

¹⁹ and no more am I worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hirelings.
