Luke 15:14-31 in American Standard Version (1901)

14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
17 But when he came to himself he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish here with hunger!
18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight:
19 I am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
20 And he arose, and came to his father. But while he was yet afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight: I am no more worthy to be called thy son.
22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 and bring the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat, and make merry:
24 for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 And he called to him one of the servants, and inquired what these things might be.
27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 But he was angry, and would not go in: and his father came out, and entreated him.
29 But he answered and said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, and I never transgressed a commandment of thine; and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30 but when this thy son came, who hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou killedst for him the fatted calf.
31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that is mine is thine.

Luke 15:14-31 in Translation for Translators

14 After he had spent all his money, there was a great famine throughout that country. And soon he did not have enough food to eat.
15 So he went to one of the landowners in that area and asked for work. The man sent him to work taking care of the pigs in his field.
16 Because he was very hungry, he would have been glad to eat the bean pods that the pigs ate. But no one gave him anything to eat.
17 Finally he thought clearly about what he had done. He said to himself, ‘All of my father's hired servants have plenty of food! They have more SYN than they can eat, but here I am dying because I do not have anything to eat HYP!
18 So I will leave here and go back to my father. I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against God MTY, EUP and against you (sg).
19 I am no longer worthy to be called {of you calling me} your son. Just hire me to be like one of the other hired servants.”’
20 So he left there and went back to his father's house. But while he was still some distance from the house, his father saw him. He pitied him. He ran to his son and embraced him and kissed him on the cheek.
21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against God MTY/EUP and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called {of you calling me} your son.’
22 But his father said to his servants, ‘Go quickly and bring to me the best robe in the house! Then put it on my son. Put a ring on his finger to show that I am honoring him again as my son! Put sandals on his feet to show that I do not consider him to be a slave!
23 Then bring the fat calf and kill it and cook it. We (inc) must eat and celebrate,
24 because my son has returned! It is as though MET he was dead and is alive again! It is as though he was lost and now has been found!’ So they did that, and they all began to celebrate.
25 While all that was happening, the man's older son was out working in the field. When he came near to the house, he heard people playing music and dancing.
26 He called one of the servants and asked what was happening.
27 The servant said to him, ‘Your younger brother has come home Your father has told us to kill the fat calf to celebrate because your brother has returned safe and healthy.’
28 But the older brother was angry. He refused to enter the house. So his father came out and pleaded with him to come in.
29 But he replied to his father, ‘Listen to me! For many years I have worked for you like a slave. I always obeyed everything you told me to do. But you never even gave me a young goat, so that I could kill it and cook it and celebrate with my friends.
30 But this son of yours spent all the money he got from what you gave him. He spent it to pay for sleeping with prostitutes! Yes, now he has returned home, but it is not fair that you have told your servants to kill the fat calf and cook it for him!’
31 But his father said to him, ‘My son, you have always been with me, and all my property that I did not give to your brother has been yours.

14 And when everything was gone, there was no food to be had in that country, and he was in need.
15 And he went and put himself into the hands of one of the people of that country, and he sent him into his fields to give the pigs their food.
16 And so great was his need that he would have been glad to take the pigs' food, and no one gave him anything.
17 But when he came to his senses, he said, What numbers of my father's servants have bread enough, and more, while I am near to death here through need of food!
18 I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes:
19 I am no longer good enough to be named your son: make me like one of your servants.
20 And he got up and went to his father. But while he was still far away, his father saw him and was moved with pity for him and went quickly and took him in his arms and gave him a kiss.
21 And his son said to him, Father, I have done wrong, against heaven and in your eyes: I am no longer good enough to be named your son.
22 But the father said to his servants, Get out the first robe quickly, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet:
23 And get the fat young ox and put it to death, and let us have a feast, and be glad.
24 For this, my son, who was dead, is living again; he had gone away from me, and has come back. And they were full of joy.
25 Now the older son was in the field: and when he came near the house, the sounds of music and dancing came to his ears.
26 And he sent for one of the servants, questioning him about what it might be.
27 And he said to him, Your brother has come; and your father has had the young ox put to death because he has come back safely.
28 But he was angry and would not go in; and his father came out and made a request to him to come in.
29 But he made answer and said to his father, See, all these years I have been your servant, doing your orders in everything: and you never gave me even a young goat so that I might have a feast with my friends:
30 But when this your son came, who has been wasting your property with bad women, you put to death the fat young ox for him.

30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’

Luke 15:14-31 in Free Bible Version

14 After he'd spent everything, the country was hit by a severe famine and he was starving.
15 So he went and took a job with one of the farmers there who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
16 He was so hungry that he would have eaten even the pig food, but no one gave him anything.
17 When he came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘All of my father's workers have more than enough to eat—why am I dying from hunger here?
18 I'm going home to my father! I'll tell him, Father, I've sinned against heaven and against you.
19 I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Please treat me as one of your hired workers.’
20 So he left and went home to his father. Even though he was still far away in the distance, his father saw him coming, and his heart went out to his son. The father ran to his son, hugging and kissing him.
21 The son said to him, ‘Father, I've sinned against heaven and against you. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 But the father told his servants, ‘Quick—bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.
23 Bring the calf we've been fattening and kill it. Let's have a feast to celebrate
24 because this is my son who was dead, but who has returned alive; he was lost but now he's found.’ So they started celebrating.
25 Now the older son was working out in the fields. As he walked towards the house, he heard music and dancing.
26 So he called one of the servants and asked what was going on.
27 ‘Your brother is back,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he's come home safe and sound.’
28 The brother became angry. He refused to go in. So his father came out to plead with him.
29 He told his father, ‘Look, all these years I've served you, and never disobeyed you, but you never once gave me even a young goat so I could have a party with my friends.
30 Now this son of yours comes back, having spent your money on prostitutes, and you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 ‘Son,’ the father replied, ‘you are always here with me. Everything I have is yours.

Luke 15:14-31 in Nyangumarta English Bible

14 Then he was puzzling hard, with no money. Then at that time in that country there was no rain, the trees and the grass were dying. The people in that country were staying without food. That youngest one was hungry.
15 Then he was thinking, “How will I get anything to eat? I will ask them for a job. Then truly they will give me food (in exchange) for work.” He was working for a local person of that country. That local person told him, “Look after my pigs here, and give them food.”
16 Then he was looking after the pigs. His boss didn't give him anything to eat. He was very hungry for the pigs’ rubbishy food.
17 At last he realized. “My father’s work men are eating good food till they're full, and I here am starving, from starvation I might die.
18 I will go, I will return to my father, I will tell him, ‘Father, I have done wrong. I have disobeyed God and I have disobeyed you.
19 Don't call me your son, just tell me I will be your worker, I will work for you.’#”
20 A short time later went, he returned to his father's place. His father saw him from a distance. He felt sorry for him, he ran to meet his son. He hugged him, and they cried for each other.
21 The son told him, “Father, I have done wrong (things). I have disobeyed God and I have disobeyed you. Don't call me your son.”
22 In response the father didn't listen to his son. He told his workers, “Quick! Get some nice clothes for him, put them on him, and put shoes on his feet. Then put a ring on his finger.
23 Then get the bullock, the fat one, kill it, and after you've killed it, cook it. Then we will all eat for my son. We'll truly be happy!
24 I thought my son was as good as dead for ever. He’s not! He’s alive! He went far away. It was as if he had left me for ever. Not so! He has returned to me still alive!’ Then they were happily singing and dancing.
25 The eldest was working somewhere far away. Then after work he was returning home. As he was getting close (to the camp) he heard them singing and dancing in the camp.
26 Then he called out to a man, one of his father's working men. (He asked him,) “Why are they happily singing and dancing?”
27 In reply that man told him, ‘Your younger brother returned today. Your father told us, “This my son returned to me. Kill the bullock, the fat one.”#’
28 The eldest son got sulky and didn't go to the house to meet his brother, he stayed outside a fair way off. Then his father went out to him, he begged him, ‘Come inside the house.’
29 The eldest one answered his father sulkily, “I have truly stayed with you always, I have worked for you through the winter and the summer. I have always obeyed you listened for your word. In return you didn't give me a little goat. I and my fellows could have (but didn't) eat an animal with happiness. No indeed! You didn't give me an animal to kill and to eat.
30 I am not like this youngest one of yours, (that) you gave your country to. He got money for that country, he messed up made a mistake with all his money on women. Now when he returns home you kill the fat bullock for him.
31 His father told him, “Son, you have been with me, I your father am looking after you. Everything here is yours. I am holding it all for you. Truly when I die all of these things will be yours.

Luke 15:14-31 in Plain English Version

14 After a while he had no money left. At that time they got short of food in that place, and soon that boy had nothing to eat.
15 So he got a job with a man in that place. He had to look after that man’s pigs.
16 That boy was so hungry he wanted to eat the garbage that the pigs ate, but nobody gave him anything to eat.
17 At last he started to think properly. He thought, ‘Those men who work for my dad in his garden back home, they always get enough to eat. But I am getting so hungry that I reckon I will die in this place.
18 So I will get up now and go back home to my dad, and I will say to him, “Dad, I’m sorry, I went wrong. I did wrong to God, and I did wrong to you.
19 So now I’m not good enough for you to call me your son, but just let me have a job in your garden. I will work for you, and you can just call me your working man.” ’
20 So he got up and started to go back to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming, walking up the road. His father felt real sorry for him. He got up and ran to his son and hugged him and kissed him.
21 Then the boy said, ‘Dad, I’m sorry, I went wrong. I did wrong to God, and I did wrong to you. So now I’m not good enough for you to call me your son.’
22 But his father said to his working men there, ‘Go and get some really good clothes and put them on him. And be quick. And get him a ring for his finger, and get some shoes for his feet.
23 And get a fat young bullock, and kill it, and cook the meat, so we can all have a big party.
24 You see, my son got himself lost, but now I have found him. I thought he was gone for ever, like he was dead, but now he came back to me, and it is like he came alive again.’ So those working men did what he told them to do, and they had a big party.
25 While all that was happening, the oldest son was working out in the garden, and he didn’t know what was going on. Then later, he knocked off work, and he started walking home. He came near to the house, and then he heard a lot of music, and he heard people dancing and having a good time.
26 So he asked one of the workers, ‘What’s going on?’
27 The worker said, ‘Your brother just came back home, and your dad is having a party for him. We just killed a young bullock and cooked its meat. Your brother is alive and well, so your dad is really happy.’
28 Then the oldest son got angry, and he said, ‘I’m not happy. I’m not going into the house to join in that party. No way.’ So his father came out and said, ‘Don’t be angry. Come on in, and have a good time with us.’ And the father kept on asking him to come in.
29 But the oldest son said, ‘No. It’s not fair. Look, I worked for you for years and years, and I always did everything you told me to do. But you never gave me a party. You didn’t even give me a goat for me to have a good time with my friends.
30 But this other son of yours, he took your money away and he wasted it. He even paid women to sleep with him, like a woman does with her husband. And now he has come back, and you are good to him. You even killed a young bullock and gave him a party. That’s not right.’
31 His father said, ‘Listen, you are my own dear son. You have always stayed with me, and now you own everything that I have. After I die you will get all of it.

27 He said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and healthy.’
28 But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and begged him.
29 But he answered his father, ‘Behold, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed a commandment of yours, but you never gave me a goat, that I might celebrate with my friends.
30 But when this your son came, who has devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him.’
31 “He said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

18 I will get up and go to my father, and will tell him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.
19 I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me as one of your hired servants.”’

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat; and no man gave to him.

22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it ; and let us eat, and be merry:
24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.
25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.

29 And he answering, said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither have I at any time transgressed thy commandment; and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

14 And after that he had ended all things, a strong hunger was made in that country, and he began to have need.
15 And he went, and drew him to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his town, to feed swine or hogs.
16 And he coveted to fill his womb of the pods that the hogs ate, and no man gave to him.
17 And he turned again to himself, and said, How many hired men in my father’s house have plenty of loaves; and I perish here through hunger.
18 I shall rise up, and go to my father, and I shall say to him, Father, I have sinned into or against heaven, and before thee;
19 and now I am not worthy to be called thy son, make me as one of thine hired men.
20 And he rose up, and came to his father. And when he was yet afar, his father saw him, and was stirred by mercy. And he ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned into or against heaven, and before thee; and now I am not worthy to be called thy son.
22 And the father said to his servants, Swiftly bring ye forth the first stole, and clothe ye him, and give ye a ring in his hand, and shoes on his feet;
23 and bring ye a fat calf or a calf made fat, and slay ye, and eat we, and make we feast.
24 For this my son was dead, and hath lived again; he perished, and is found. And all men began to eat gladly.
25 But his elder son was in the field; and when he came, and nighed to the house, he heard a symphony and a crowd.
26 And he called one of the servants, and asked, what these things were.
27 And he said to him, Thy brother is come, and thy father slew a fat or a fatted calf, for he received him safe.

Luke 15:14-31 in Young's Literal Translation

14 and he having spent all, there came a mighty famine on that country, and himself began to be in want;
15 and having gone on, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him to the fields to feed swine,
16 and he was desirous to fill his belly from the husks that the swine were eating, and no one was giving to him.
17 'And having come to himself, he said, How many hirelings of my father have a superabundance of bread, and I here with hunger am perishing!
18 having risen, I will go on unto my father, and will say to him, Father, I did sin — to the heaven, and before thee,
19 and no more am I worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hirelings.
20 'And having risen, he went unto his own father, and he being yet far distant, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and having ran he fell upon his neck and kissed him;
21 and the son said to him, Father, I did sin — to the heaven, and before thee, and no more am I worthy to be called thy son.
22 'And the father said unto his servants, Bring forth the first robe, and clothe him, and give a ring for his hand, and sandals for the feet;
23 and having brought the fatted calf, kill it, and having eaten, we may be merry,
24 because this my son was dead, and did live again, and he was lost, and was found; and they began to be merry.
25 'And his elder son was in a field, and as, coming, he drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing,
26 and having called near one of the young men, he was inquiring what these things might be,
27 and he said to him — Thy brother is arrived, and thy father did kill the fatted calf, because in health he did receive him back.
28 'And he was angry, and would not go in, therefore his father, having come forth, was entreating him;
29 and he answering said to the father, Lo, so many years I do serve thee, and never thy command did I transgress, and to me thou didst never give a kid, that with my friends I might make merry;
30 but when thy son — this one who did devour thy living with harlots — came, thou didst kill to him the fatted calf.
31 'And he said to him, Child, thou art always with me, and all my things are thine;
