Luke 15:1-16 in American Standard Version (1901)

1 Now all the publicans and sinners were drawing near unto him to hear him.
2 And both the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3 And he spake unto them this parable, saying,
4 What man of you, having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and his neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say unto you, that even so there shall be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine righteous persons, who need no repentance.
8 Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek diligently until she find it?
9 And when she hath found it, she calleth together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had lost.
10 Even so, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of thy substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

Luke 15:1-16 in Translation for Translators

1 Many HYP tax collectors and others whom people considered to be habitual sinners kept coming to Jesus to listen to him teach.
2 The Pharisees and men who taught the Jewish laws who were there SYN began to grumble, saying, “This man welcomes sinners and he also defiles himself by eating with them!”
3 So Jesus told them this parable:
4 “Suppose that one of you had a hundred sheep. If one of them were lost, ◄you (sg) would certainly leave the ninety-nine sheep in the pasture, and go and search for the one lost sheep until you found it./would you not leave the ninety-nine sheep in the pasture, and go and search for the one lost sheep until you found it?► RHQ
5 When you (sg) found it, you would put it on your shoulders and be happy.
6 When you brought it home, you would call together your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‘Be happy with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’
7 I tell you (pl) that similarly God will be very happy about each and every sinner who turns from doing evil. God is not happy about ninety-nine people who think that they are IRO righteous and think that they do not need to turn from doing evil.
8 Or, suppose that a woman has ten very valuable silver coins. If she loses one of them, ◄she will certainly light a lamp and sweep the floor and search carefully until she finds it!/will she not light a lamp and sweep the floor and search carefully until she finds it?► RHQ
9 When she finds it, she will call together her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Be happy with me, because I have found the coin that I lost!’
10 I tell you that similarly the angels will be happy about even just one sinner who turns from doing evil.”
11 Then Jesus told them this parable to compare what the Pharisees and teachers of the Jewish law thought about those who turn from their sinful behavior with what God thinks about such people. He said, “A certain man had two sons.
12 One day the younger son said to his father, ‘Father, I do not want to wait until you(sg) die. Give me now the share of your property that belongs to me!’ So the man divided his property between his two sons.
13 A few days later, the younger son sold his share. He gathered his money and other things together and went to a country far away. There he spent all his money foolishly in reckless/wild living.
14 After he had spent all his money, there was a great famine throughout that country. And soon he did not have enough food to eat.
15 So he went to one of the landowners in that area and asked for work. The man sent him to work taking care of the pigs in his field.
16 Because he was very hungry, he would have been glad to eat the bean pods that the pigs ate. But no one gave him anything to eat.

Luke 15:1-16 in Bible in Basic English

1 Now all the tax-farmers and sinners came near to give ear to him.
2 And the Pharisees and scribes were angry, saying, This man gives approval to sinners, and takes food with them.
3 And he made a story for them, saying,
4 What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if one of them gets loose and goes away, will not let the ninety-nine be in the waste land by themselves, and go after the wandering one, till he sees where it is?
5 And when he has got it again, he takes it in his arms with joy.
6 And when he gets back to his house, he sends for his neighbours and friends, saying to them, Be glad with me, for I have got back my sheep which had gone away.
7 I say to you that even so there will be more joy in heaven when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing, than for ninety-nine good men, who have no need of a change of heart.
8 Or what woman, having ten bits of silver, if one bit has gone from her hands, will not get a light, and go through her house, searching with care till she sees it?
9 And when she has it again, she gets her friends and neighbours together, saying, Be glad with me, for I have got back the bit of silver which had gone from me.
10 Even so, I say to you, There is joy among the angels of God, when one sinner is turned away from his wrongdoing.
11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me that part of your property which will be mine. And he made division of his goods between them.
13 And not long after, the younger son got together everything which was his and took a journey into a far-away country, and there all his money went in foolish living.
14 And when everything was gone, there was no food to be had in that country, and he was in need.
15 And he went and put himself into the hands of one of the people of that country, and he sent him into his fields to give the pigs their food.
16 And so great was his need that he would have been glad to take the pigs' food, and no one gave him anything.

Luke 15:1-16 in Free Bible Version

1 Tax collectors and other “sinners” often used to come and listen to Jesus.
2 As a result the Pharisees and the religious teachers complained, “This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them.”
3 So Jesus told them this story as an illustration.
4 “Imagine a man who had a hundred sheep lost one of them. Wouldn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture, and search for the one that's lost until he finds it?
5 When he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders.
6 Once he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Come and celebrate with me! I've found my lost sheep!’
7 I tell you that there's more joy in heaven over a sinner that repents than over ninety-nine good people who don't need to repent.
8 Imagine a woman who has ten silver coins, and loses one of them. Wouldn't she light a lamp and sweep the house, carefully searching until she finds it?
9 When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Come and celebrate with me! I've found the silver coin that I lost.’
10 I tell you there is joy in the presence of God's angels over one sinner that repents.
11 Once there was a man who had two sons,” Jesus explained.
12 “The younger one told his father, ‘Father, give me my inheritance now.’ So the man divided his property between them.
13 A few days later the younger son packed up what he had and left for a distant country. Here he wasted all his money living a reckless life.
14 After he'd spent everything, the country was hit by a severe famine and he was starving.
15 So he went and took a job with one of the farmers there who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.
16 He was so hungry that he would have eaten even the pig food, but no one gave him anything.

8 Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
9 And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.
10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
11 And he said, A certain man had two sons:
12 and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.
13 And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

Luke 15:1-16 in Nyangumarta English Bible

1 Jesus was telling the people about God. Many were there listening to him. Bad people also were coming to him to listen.
2 In the crowd in the many' some teachers of the Jews' law were there among them. Others also were there, they called themselves Pharisees. All those Pharisees and teachers were watching Jesus. They were saying to each other, “This Jesus is talking with the bad people, and he's eating food in their camps. That's bad.”
3 Jesus knew about them what they were saying to each other. Therefore he told them this story to teach them.
4 “Listen to this! Maybe one of you may have 100 sheep way out in the bush. Then perhaps one sheep may wander off and get lost. What will you do? You will leave the other 99 sheep in the bush. Then you will search carefully for the one sheep that ran away.
5 When you find the one that got lost, you will become very happy. You will pick up that one sheep that ran away. Then you will carry it on your shoulders, you will return to your camp.
6 Then you will call out to all your people, “Come here! This sheep of mine ran away into the bush. Truly I have found it. Now I am very happy. Let us all be happy.”
7 Then Jesus said to them, “Yes! You are very happy after picking up your sheep. Like this God up above and his angels will be happy after one person after doing bad (things) returns to God. They are happy about the 99 good people who follow God. Truly they will be very happy about one person who after doing bad turns around in his tracks and returns to follow God.”
8 Then Jesus told them this other story. “Maybe a woman might have 10 coins. Then perhaps she will lose one. What will she do? She will light the lamp, she will sweep the house, she will search carefully in every direction.
9 When she finds (the coin), she will call to the other people, “Come here! That money that I lost, truly I have found it! Now I am very happy. Let's all be happy!”
10 Then Jesus said to them, “Yes! Like this God and his angels will be happy about one man returning from his bad ways.”
11 Then he told them this other story. “Yes. Previously there lived a man who had two sons.
12 One day the youngest one asked their father, “Father, when you die we (du.ex) will get your country. Share this country with us now, give me my share now.” Then truly the father divided it for those two.
13 Then the youngest one gave his country to others for money sold it, left home, and went far off to another country. In that country he was making mistakes with all that money. He was drinking, he was gambling playing, truly he messed up his life for himself with all his money.
14 Then he was puzzling hard, with no money. Then at that time in that country there was no rain, the trees and the grass were dying. The people in that country were staying without food. That youngest one was hungry.
15 Then he was thinking, “How will I get anything to eat? I will ask them for a job. Then truly they will give me food (in exchange) for work.” He was working for a local person of that country. That local person told him, “Look after my pigs here, and give them food.”
16 Then he was looking after the pigs. His boss didn't give him anything to eat. He was very hungry for the pigs’ rubbishy food.

1 And all the publicans and the sinners were drawing near to him, to hear him.
2 And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
3 And he spoke to them this parable, saying,
4 What man of you having a hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he findeth it?
5 And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6 And when he hath come home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.
7 I say to you, that in like manner there will be joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety-nine righteous men who have no need of repentance.
8 Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and search carefully till she findeth it?
9 And when she hath found it, she calleth together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I lost.
10 I say to you, that thus there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
11 He said also, A certain man had two sons.
12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of the property that falleth to me. And he divided to them his living.
13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, and went abroad into a far country; and there wasted his substance in riotous living.
14 And when he had spent all, there arose a great famine in that country; and he began to be in want.
15 And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
16 And he longed to fill himself with the husks that the swine ate; and no one gave to him.

1 The tax-gatherers and the outcasts were all drawing near to Jesus to listen to him;
2 but the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law found fault. “This man always welcomes outcasts, and takes meals with them!” they complained.
3 So Jesus told them this parable —
4 “Who amongst you who has a hundred sheep, and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine out in the open country, and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
5 And, when he has found it, he puts in on his shoulders rejoicing;
6 and, on reaching home, he calls his friends and his neighbours together, and says ‘Come and rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.’
7 So, I tell you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one outcast who repents, than over ninety-nine religious people, who have no need to repent.
8 Or again, what woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?
9 And, when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbours together, and says ‘Come and rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I lost.’
10 So, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of God's angels over one outcast who repents.”
11 Then Jesus continued, “A man had two sons;
12 and the younger of them said to his father ‘Father, give me my share of the inheritance.’ So the father divided the property between them.
13 A few days later the younger son got together all that he had, and went away into a distant land; and there he squandered his inheritance by leading a dissolute life.
14 After he has spent all that he had, there was a severe famine through all that country, and he began to be in actual want.
15 So he went and engaged himself to one of the people of that country, who sent him into his fields to tend pigs.
16 He even longed to satisfy his hunger with the bean-pods on which the pigs were feeding; and no one gave him anything.

Luke 15:1-16 in Plain English Version

1 There were some men that used to get tax money from the people and give it to the Roman government, and everyone reckoned they were bad men. And there were other people too that everyone reckoned were real bad people. Those people often came to listen to Jesus.
2 So the law men called Pharisees, and Jewish law teachers, complained about Jesus. They said, “He is a friend of bad people. He even eats food with them.”
3 So Jesus told the people this picture story. He said,
4 “Suppose there is a man that has 100 sheep, but one of them wanders away and gets lost. What do you think that man will do? He will leave all the sheep and go out into the bush and look for the one that got lost. He will keep on looking for it until he finds it.
5 Then, after he finds it, he will pick it up and carry it back home on his shoulders. He will be really happy.
6 After he gets home he will call out to all his friends. He will say, ‘Hey, I’ve found my lost sheep. We can all be happy together now.’
7 Well, it is like that in heaven, too. Whenever one bad person turns around and leaves the bad way, and lives God’s way, everyone in heaven is really happy. They are more happy about that person than they are about the big mob of other people that never went wrong.”
8 Jesus told them another picture story. He said, “Suppose a woman has 10 coins, but then she loses one of them in her house. What do you think she will do? She will get a torch and look carefully everywhere in the house. She will even sweep all the floors, and she will keep looking for her money until she finds it.
9 Then, after she finds it, she will call out to all her friends, she will say, ‘Hey, I’ve found my lost coin. We can all be happy together now.’
10 Well, it is like that in heaven, too. Whenever one bad person turns around and leaves the bad way, and lives God’s way, God’s angel messengers in heaven are really happy.”
11 Jesus told the people this picture story. He said, “There was a man who had 2 sons.
12 One day his youngest son said to him, ‘Dad, I want you to give me my share of all the things you own. I can’t wait to get it after you die. No, I want it all now.’ So his father split up everything he had and gave one part to his youngest son, and he kept the other part for his oldest son.
13 A few days later that youngest son sold all those things that his father gave him, then he took the money and went away to another country. In that country he soon spent all his money. He just wasted it on all kinds of things that made him feel good.
14 After a while he had no money left. At that time they got short of food in that place, and soon that boy had nothing to eat.
15 So he got a job with a man in that place. He had to look after that man’s pigs.
16 That boy was so hungry he wanted to eat the garbage that the pigs ate, but nobody gave him anything to eat.

2 And the Pharisees and scribes grutched, saying, For this man receiv-eth sinful men, and eateth with them.
3 And he spake to them this parable, and said,
4 What man of you that hath an hundred sheep, and if he hath lost one of them, whether he leaveth not ninety and nine in desert, and goeth to it that perished, till he find it?
5 And when he hath found it, he joyeth, and layeth or putteth it on his shoulders;
6 and he cometh home, and calleth together his friends and neighbours, and saith to them, Be ye glad with me, for I have found my sheep, that had perished or I had lost.
7 And I say to you, so joy shall be in heaven on one sinful man doing penance, more than on ninety and nine just, that have no need to or of penance.
8 Or what woman having ten bezants or ten drachmas, and if she hath lost one bezant or one drachma, whether she tendeth not or lighteth not a lantern, and turneth upside-down the house, and seeketh diligently, till she find it?
9 And when she hath found, she calleth together friends and neighbours, and saith, Be ye glad with me, for I have found the bezant or the drachma that I had lost.
10 So I say to you, joy shall be before the angels of God on one sinful man doing penance.
11 And he said, A man had two sons;
12 and the younger of them said to the father or to his father, Father, give me the portion of chattel or substance that falleth to me. And he parted to them the chattel or the substance.
13 And not after many days, when all things were gathered together, the younger son went forth in pilgrimage into a far country; and there he wasted his goods or his substance in living lecherously.
14 And after that he had ended all things, a strong hunger was made in that country, and he began to have need.
15 And he went, and drew him to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his town, to feed swine or hogs.
16 And he coveted to fill his womb of the pods that the hogs ate, and no man gave to him.

Luke 15:1-16 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling (Enhanced)

1 And publicans and sinful men were nighing to him, to hear him. (And tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to him, to listen to him.)
2 And the Pharisees and (the) scribes grudged, saying, For this man receiveth sinful men, and eateth with them. (And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, For this man welcometh sinners, and eateth with them.)
3 And he spake to them this parable, and said,
4 What man of you that hath an hundred sheep, and if he hath lost one of them, whether he leaveth not ninety and nine in (the) desert, and goeth to it that perished, till he find it? (or and goeth after that which is lost, until he find it?)
5 And when he hath found it, he joyeth, and layeth or putteth it on his shoulders;
6 and he cometh home, and calleth together his friends and neighbours, and saith to them, Be ye glad with me, for I have found my sheep, that had perished or that I had lost.
7 And I say to you, so joy shall be in heaven on one sinful man doing penance, more than on ninety and nine just, that have no need to penance or that have no need of penance. (And I tell you, there shall be more joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, than over ninety-nine righteous men, who have no need of repentance.)
8 Or what woman having ten bezants or ten drachmas, and if she hath lost one bezant or one drachma, whether she tendeth not or she lighteth not a lantern, and turneth upside-down the house, and seeketh diligently, till she find it?
9 And when she hath found (it), she calleth together (her) friends and neighbours, and saith, Be ye glad with me, for I have found the bezant or the drachma that I had lost.
10 So I say to you, joy shall be before the angels of God on one sinful man doing penance. (So I tell you, there is joy among the angels of God over one sinner repenting.)
11 And he said, A man had two sons;
12 and the younger of them said to the father or and the younger said to his father, Father, give me the portion of (the) chattel or of (the) substance that falleth to me. And he parted to them the chattel or the substance, (or And he divided the goods between them).
13 And not after many days, when all things were gathered together, the younger son went forth in pilgrimage into a far country; and there he wasted his goods or his substance in living lecherously.
14 And after that he had ended all things, a strong hunger was made in that country, and he began to have need.
15 And he went, and drew him(self) to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his town, to feed swine, (or to feed his pigs), or (so) that he should feed hogs.
16 And he coveted to fill his womb of the pods that the hogs ate, and no man gave (anything) to him. (And he desired to fill his belly with the pods which the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat.)

Luke 15:1-16 in Young's Literal Translation

1 And all the tax-gatherers and the sinners were coming nigh to him, to hear him,
2 and the Pharisees and the scribes were murmuring, saying — This one doth receive sinners, and doth eat with them.'
3 And he spake unto them this simile, saying,
4 'What man of you having a hundred sheep, and having lost one out of them, doth not leave behind the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go on after the lost one, till he may find it?
5 and having found, he doth lay it on his shoulders rejoicing,
6 and having come to the house, he doth call together the friends and the neighbours, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep — the lost one.
7 'I say to you, that so joy shall be in the heaven over one sinner reforming, rather than over ninety-nine righteous men, who have no need of reformation.
8 'Or what woman having ten drachms, if she may lose one drachm, doth not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek carefully till that she may find?
9 and having found, she doth call together the female friends and the neighbours, saying, Rejoice with me, for I found the drachm that I lost.
10 'So I say to you, joy doth come before the messengers of God over one sinner reforming.'
11 And he said, 'A certain man had two sons,
12 and the younger of them said to the father, Father, give me the portion of the substance falling to me, and he divided to them the living.
13 'And not many days after, having gathered all together, the younger son went abroad to a far country, and there he scattered his substance, living riotously;
14 and he having spent all, there came a mighty famine on that country, and himself began to be in want;
15 and having gone on, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him to the fields to feed swine,
16 and he was desirous to fill his belly from the husks that the swine were eating, and no one was giving to him.
