Luke 14:5-21 in English

⁵ And he said unto them, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a well, and will not straightway draw him up on a sabbath day?

⁶ And they could not answer again unto these things.

⁷ And he spake a parable unto those that were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them,

⁸ When thou art bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat; lest haply a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him,

⁹ and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place.

¹⁰ But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that hath bidden thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have glory in the presence of all that sit at meat with thee.

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹² And he said to him also that had bidden him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; because they have not wherewith to recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.

¹⁵ And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ But he said unto him, A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many:

¹⁷ and he sent forth his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it; I pray thee have me excused.

¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee have me excused.

²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

²¹ And the servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and maimed and blind and lame.

¹⁰ But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.

¹¹ For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹² Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

¹⁴ And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

²¹ And the servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor and maimed and blind and lame.

⁵ Then he said to the rest of them, “If you had a son or an ox that fell into a well on a ◄Sabbath/our day of rest►, would you immediately work to pull him out, or would you(sg) let him stay there until the next day?”

⁶ They knew that they would immediately work to pull him out, even on their day of rest, so they could not justly say that Jesus did wrong by healing the man on that day. So they said nothing in reply to Jesus.

⁷ Jesus noticed that those people who had been {whom the Pharisee had} invited to the meal chose to sit in the places where important people usually sit. Then he gave this advice to them:

⁸ “When one of you (sg) is invited by someone {someone invites one of you (sg)} to a wedding feast, do not sit in a place where important people sit. Perhaps the man giving the feast has invited a man more important than you (sg).

⁹ When that man comes, the man who invited both of you will come to you (sg) and say to you, ‘Let this man take your seat!’ Then you (sg) will have to take the most undesirable seat, and you will be ashamed.

¹⁰ Instead, when you are invited { someone invites one of you} to a feast, go and sit in the most undesirable seat. Then when the man who invited everyone comes, he will say to you (sg), ‘Friend, sit in a better seat!’ Then all the people who are eating with you (sg) will see that he is honoring you.

¹¹ Also, remember this: God will humble those who exalt themselves. And he will exalt those who humble themselves.”

¹² Jesus also said to the Pharisee who had invited him to the meal, “When you (sg) invite people to a midday or evening meal, do not invite your friends or your family or your other relatives or your rich neighbors. They can later invite you (sg) for a meal. In that way they will repay you.

¹³ Instead, when you (sg) give a feast, invite poor people, crippled people, lame people, or blind people.

¹⁴ They will be unable to repay you. But God will bless you! He will repay you at the time when he causes righteous people to become alive again.”

¹⁵ One of those who were eating with Jesus heard him say that. He said to Jesus, “God has truly blessed us Jews who will eat with the Messiah when he starts to rule!”

¹⁶ But to show that many Jews whom God had invited would not accept God's invitation MET, Jesus replied to him, “One time a man decided to prepare a large feast. He invited many people to come.

¹⁷ When it was the day for the feast, he sent his servant to tell those who had been {whom he had} invited, ‘Come now because everything is ready!’

¹⁸ But when the servant did that, all of the people whom he had invited began to say why they did not want to come. The first man the servant went to said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please ask your master to forgive me for not coming!’

¹⁹ Another person said, ‘I have just bought five pair of oxen, and I must go to examine them. Please ask your master to forgive me for not coming!’

²⁰ Another person said, ‘I have just been married. So I cannot come.’

²¹ So the servant returned to his master and reported what everyone had said. The owner of the house was angry when he heard the reasons they gave for not coming. He said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and alleys of the city and find poor and crippled and blind and lame people, and bring them here into my house!’

⁵ He answered them, “Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn’t immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

⁶ They couldn’t answer him regarding these things.

⁷ He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them,

⁸ “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honorable than you might be invited by him,

⁹ and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, ‘Make room for this person.’ Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.

¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”

¹⁵ When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!”

⁵ And he said to them, Which of you, whose ox or ass has got into a water-hole, will not straight away get him out on the Sabbath?

⁶ And they had no answer to that question.

⁷ And he gave teaching in the form of a story to the guests who came to the feast, when he saw how they took the best seats; saying to them,

⁸ When you get a request to come to a feast, do not take the best seat, for a more important man than you may be coming,

⁹ And then the giver of the feast will come to you and say, Give your place to this man; and you, with shame, will have to take the lowest seat.

¹⁰ But when you come, go and take the lowest seat, so that when the giver of the feast comes, he may say to you, Friend, come up higher; and then you will have honour in the eyes of all the others who are there.

¹¹ For every man who gives himself a high place will be put down, but he who takes a low place will be lifted up.

¹² And he said to the master of the house, When you give a feast, do not send for your friends and your brothers and your family or your neighbours who have wealth, for they may give a feast for you, and so you will get a reward.

¹³ But when you give a feast, send for the poor and the blind and those who are broken in body:

¹⁴ And you will have a blessing, because they will not be able to give you any payment, and you will get your reward when the upright come back from the dead.

¹⁵ And, hearing these words, one of those who were at table with him said to him, Happy is the man who will be a guest in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And he said to them, A certain man gave a great feast, and sent word of it to a number of people.

¹⁷ And when the time had come, he sent his servants to say to them, Come, for all things are now ready.

¹⁸ And they all gave reasons why they were not able to come. The first said to him, I have got a new field, and it is necessary for me to go and see it: I am full of regret that I am unable to come.

¹⁹ And another said, I have got some cattle, and I am going to make a test of them: I am full of regret that I am unable to come.

²⁰ And another said, I have been married, and so I am not able to come.

²¹ And the servant came back and gave his master an account of these things. Then the master of the house was angry and said to the servant, Go out quickly into the streets of the town and get the poor, the blind, and those who are broken in body.

⁵ And answering he said to them, Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a well, that he does not straightway pull him up on the sabbath day?

⁶ And they were not able to answer him to these things.

⁷ And he spoke a parable to those that were invited, remarking how they chose out the first places, saying to them,

⁸ When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not lay thyself down in the first place at table, lest perhaps a more honourable than thou be invited by him,

⁹ and he who invited thee and him come and say to thee, Give place to this man, and then thou begin with shame to take the last place.

¹⁰ But when thou hast been invited, go and put thyself down in the last place, that when he who has invited thee comes, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour before all that are lying at table with thee;

¹¹ for every one that exalts himself shall be abased, and he that abases himself shall be exalted.

¹² And he said also to him that had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsfolk, nor rich neighbours, lest it may be they also should invite thee in return, and a recompense be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call poor, crippled, lame, blind:

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not the means to recompense thee; for it shall be recompensed thee in the resurrection of the just.

¹⁵ And one of those that were lying at table with them, hearing these things, said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And he said to him, A certain man made a great supper and invited many.

¹⁷ And he sent his bondman at the hour of supper to say to those who were invited, Come, for already all things are ready.

¹⁸ And all began, without exception, to excuse themselves. The first said to him, I have bought land, and I must go out and see it; I pray thee hold me for excused.

¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee hold me for excused.

²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come.

²¹ And the bondman came up and brought back word of these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, in anger, said to his bondman, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring here the poor and crippled and lame and blind.

¹⁹ And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused.

²⁰ And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

²¹ And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame.

⁵ Then He answered them, saying, “Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”

⁶ And they were not able to answer Him regarding these things.

⁷ So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the places of honor, saying to them:

⁸ “Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding celebration, do not sit down in the place of honor, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;

⁹ and he who invited you and him shall come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the last place.

¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit down in the last place, so that when he who invited you comes, he shall say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who recline with you.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.”

¹² Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

¹³ But whenever you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they do not have anything to repay you; for it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the just.”

¹⁵ Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who shall eat breakfast in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great banquet, and he invited many,

¹⁷ and he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’

¹⁸ But they all with one accord began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I must go and see it. I ask you, have me excused.’

¹⁹ And another said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you, have me excused.’

²⁰ Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, therefore I cannot come.’

²¹ So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’

⁵ Then He addressed them saying, “Which of you, if a son or an ox falls into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?”

⁶ And they could not answer Him regarding these things.

⁷ Then He told a parable to those who were invited, having observed how they kept trying for the best places, saying to them:

⁸ “Whenever you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not recline in the place of honor, in case someone more honorable than you has been invited by him;

⁹ then he who invited you both will come and say, ‘You, give this man place!’ and then, with shame, you start to take the lowest place.

¹⁰ Rather, whenever you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will have honor in the presence of your fellow guests.

¹¹ Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹² Then He said directly to His host: “Whenever you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

¹³ But whenever you make a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you—you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

¹⁵ Well when one of the fellow-recliners heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who will eat dinner in the Kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ So He said to him: “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many.

¹⁷ And at meal time he sent his slave to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’

¹⁸ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him: ‘I bought a field, and I need to go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’

¹⁹ Another said: ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’

²⁰ Yet another said, ‘I have married a wife, and so I cannot come.’

²¹ So that slave came and reported these things to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’

⁵ Then Jesus said to them, “If your son or your ox happened to fall into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn't you go and pull him out immediately?”

⁶ They weren't able to give an answer.

⁷ So he told a story to the guests, noticing how they'd chosen to sit in places of honor.

⁸ “When you're invited to a wedding reception, don't take the place of honor, because someone more important than you may have been invited,” he began.

⁹ “Your host who invited you both will come and tell you, ‘Give this man your place.’ Then in embarrassment you'll have to move to whatever place is left.

¹⁰ Instead, when you're invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes in, he'll tell you, ‘My friend, please move to a better seat.’ Then you'll be honored before all the guests sitting with you.

¹¹ For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

¹² Then he said to the man who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don't invite your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors, for they may invite you back, and then you'd be repaid.

¹³ Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, for they have nothing to repay you with, and you'll be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”

¹⁵ When one of them eating at the table with Jesus heard this, he said to Jesus, “How wonderful it will be for those who feast in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ “Once there was a man who prepared a great banquet, and invited many guests,” Jesus replied.

¹⁷ “When it was time to eat he sent his servant out to tell everyone who had been invited, ‘Come, because the banquet's ready.’

¹⁸ But they all started to make excuses. The first said, ‘I've just bought a field and I have to go and see it. Please excuse me.’

¹⁹ Another said, ‘I've just bought five pairs of oxen and have to go and try them out. Please excuse me.’ Still another said,

²⁰ ‘I've just got married, so I can't come.’

²¹ The servant returned and told his master what they'd said. The home-owner became angry and told his servant, ‘Quickly, go out into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’

⁵ And answered them, saying, Which of you shall haue an asse, or an oxe fallen into a pit, and wil not straightway pull him out on the Sabbath day?

⁶ And they could not answere him againe to those things.

⁷ He spake also a parable to the ghestes, when he marked howe they chose out the chiefe roomes, and said vnto them,

⁸ When thou shalt be bidden of any man to a wedding, set not thy selfe downe in the chiefest place, lest a more honourable man then thou, be bidden of him,

⁹ And he that bade both him and thee, come, and say to thee, Giue this man roome, and thou then begin with shame to take the lowest roome.

¹⁰ But when thou art bidden, goe and sit downe in the lowest roome, that when he that bade thee, cometh, he may say vnto thee, Friende, sit vp hier: then shalt thou haue worship in the presence of them that sit at table with thee.

⁷ Observing that the guests were choosing the best places for themselves, Jesus told them this parable —

⁸ “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding banquet, do not seat yourself in the best place. Someone of higher rank might have been invited by your host;

⁹ and the host who invited you both will come and say to you ‘Make room for this person,’ and then you will begin in confusion to take the lowest place.

¹⁰ No, when you are invited, go and take the lowest place, so that, when the host who has invited you comes, he may say to you ‘Friend, come higher up’; and then you will be honoured in the eyes of all your fellow guests.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and everyone who humbles themselves will be exalted.”

¹² Then Jesus went on to say to the man who had invited him, “When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not ask your friends, or your brothers or sisters, or your relatives, or rich neighbours, because they might invite you in return, and so you should be repaid.

¹³ No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot reward you; for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”

¹⁵ One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed, “Happy will be the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ But Jesus said to him, “A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,

¹⁷ and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

¹⁸ They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first said to the servant ‘I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.’

¹⁹ The next said ‘I have bought five pairs of bullocks, and I am on my way to try them. I must ask you to consider me excused’;

²⁰ while the next said ‘I am just married, and for that reason I am unable to come.’

²¹ On his return the servant told his master all these answers. Then in anger the owner of the house said to his servant ‘Go out at once into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring in here the poor, and the crippled, and the blind, and the lame.’

¹² He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also teshuvah ·completely return· the favor, and pay you back.

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the upright.”

¹⁵ When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!”

¹⁶ But he said to him, “A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.

¹⁷ He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, ‘Come, for everything is ready now.’

¹⁸ They all as one began to make excuses. “The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.’

¹⁹ “Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go try them out. Please have me excused.’

²⁰ “Another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I can’t come.’

²¹ “That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.’

⁵ Then Jesus talked to the law mob there. He said, “Sometimes you work on our rest day, don’t you? If ever you have to do something straight away, like if your little kid falls into a deep hole on a Saturday, you get up quick and pull him out. Or if your cow falls into a hole, you pull it out, even on a Saturday. You do that, don’t you? So it’s all right to do a good thing on a Saturday. Isn’t that right?”

⁶ That mob didn’t answer Jesus. They couldn’t say that he was wrong.

⁷ There were a lot of people at that dinner, and they all wanted to sit in the seats up near the boss. That’s where the important people sit. Jesus watched them, then he told them,

⁸ “You are not doing it the right way. You see, if somebody asks you to come to a big dinner, don’t go quickly to the best seat and sit down there. Maybe somebody more important than you will come later,

⁹ and the boss will tell you, ‘Get up and give this person that good seat.’ Then you will feel ashamed, and you will have to find yourself an empty seat, and it will be down at the other end of the table, at the place for people that are not important.

¹⁰ Instead of that, when you come to the dinner, go and sit at the other end of the table, then later the boss will see you there, and he will say, ‘My friend, you can have a better seat than that.’ And he will take you up to a good seat, and everybody there will see him do that, and they will respect you.

¹¹ You see, if you try to make yourself important, God will make you ashamed. But if you make yourself not important, God will get people to respect you.”

¹² Then Jesus talked to the boss of that house. He said, “Whenever you put on a lunch or a dinner, for other people to come and eat it with you, don’t ask you family, or your friends, or the rich people that live near you, to come to that meal. If you ask those people to come, later they will ask you to come to eat a meal with them. That will be the only pay you get for feeding them.

¹³ Instead of that, ask poor people to come and eat with you. Maybe they are crippled, or blind, or they can’t walk, so they can’t get jobs to get some pay, so they are too poor to put on a meal for you.

¹⁴ There’s no way they can pay you for that feed. But God will make you real happy. On the day when God will make everyone alive again, at that time he will pay you properly for that good thing you did for those poor people.”

¹⁵ One of the men sitting there heard the words that Jesus said, and that man said, “It will be real good to be at the dinner that God will put on for all his family.”

¹⁶ Jesus told him this picture story. He said, “An important man put on a big dinner. He asked a lot of people to come to eat that dinner with him.

¹⁷ When all the food was ready, he sent his worker out to tell them to come. He said to each one of them, ‘You can come now, the dinner is ready for you.’

¹⁸ But each one told him they couldn’t come to that dinner. One of them said, ‘I have bought a garden, so I have to go and look at it. Please tell your boss I’m sorry, but I can’t come to his dinner.’

¹⁹ The next man said, ‘I have bought 10 bullocks, and I have to see if they work well together. Please tell your boss I’m sorry, but I can’t come to his dinner.’

²⁰ Another man said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come to that dinner.’

²¹ The worker went back to his boss and told him their stories. Then his boss was very angry. He said to his worker, ‘Get up quickly now and go out to every street in this town and get the poor people, and bring them here to eat this dinner. Bring those that are crippled, and the blind ones, and those that can’t walk.’

⁵ and answered the sayinge whiche of you shall have an asse or an oxe fallen into a pitt and will not strayght waye pull him out on the Saboth daye?

⁶ And they coulde not answer him agayne to that.

⁷ He put forthe a similitude to the gestes when he marked how they preased to the hyest roumes and sayd vnto them:

⁸ When thou arte bidde to a weddynge of eny man syt not doune in the hyest roume lest a more honorable man then thou be bidden of him

⁹ and he that bade bothe him and the come and saye to the: geve this man roume and thou then beginne with shame to take the lowest roume.

¹⁰ But rather when thou arte bidden goo and syt in the lowest roume that when he that bade the cometh he maye saye vnto the: frende syt vp hyer. Then shalt thou have worshippe in the presence of them that syt at meate with the.

¹¹ For whosoever exalteth him sylfe shalbe brought lowe. And he that hubleth him sylfe shalbe exalted

¹² Then sayde he also to him that had desyred him to diner: When thou makest a diner or a supper: call not thy frendes nor thy brethren nether thy kinsmen nor yet ryche neghbours: lest they bidde the agayne and a recompence be made the.

¹³ But when thou makest afeast call the poore the maymed the lame and the blynde

¹⁴ and thou shalt be happy for they cannot recompence the. But thou shalt be recompensed at the resurreccion of the iuste men.

¹⁵ When one of them that sate at meate also hearde that he sayde vnto him: happy is he that eateth breed in the kyngdome of God.

¹⁶ Then sayd he to him. A certayne man ordened a greate supper and bade many

¹⁷ and sent his servaunt at supper tyme to saye to them that wer bidden come: for all thinges are now redy.

¹⁸ And they all atonce begane to make excuse. The fyrst sayd vnto him: I have bought a ferme and I must nedes goo and se it I praye the have me excused.

¹⁹ And another sayd: I hove bought fyve yooke of oxen and I goo to prove them I praye the have me excused.

²⁰ The thyrde sayd: I have maried a wyfe and therfore I cannot come.

²¹ And the servaunt went and brought his master worde therof. Then was the good man of the housse displeased and sayd to his servaut: Goo out quickly into the stretes and quarters of the cite and bringe in hidder the poore and the maymed and the halt and the blynde.

⁷ When Jesus noticed how those who were invited chose the seats of honor, he spoke a parable, saying to them,

⁹ When the person who invited both of you arrives, he will say to you, 'Give this other person your place,' and then in shame you will proceed to take the lowest place.

¹⁶ But he said to him, “A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.

¹⁷ He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, ‘Come, for everything is ready now.’

¹⁸ They all as one began to make excuses. “The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.’

¹⁹ “Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I must go try them out. Please have me excused.’

²⁰ “Another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I can’t come.’

²¹ “That servant came, and told his lord these things. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor, maimed, blind, and lame.’

⁵ He answered them, “Which of you, if your son or an ox fell into a well, wouldn’t immediately pull him out on a Sabbath day?”

⁶ They couldn’t answer him regarding these things.

⁷ He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them,

⁸ “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, don’t sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honourable than you might be invited by him,

⁹ and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, ‘Make room for this person.’ Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place.

¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹² He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbours, or perhaps they might also return the favour, and pay you back.

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”

⁸ When thou art invited by any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room, lest a more honorable man than thou be invited by him;

⁹ And he that invited thee and him, shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.

¹⁰ But when thou art invited, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with thee.

¹¹ For whoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

⁹ and lest he come that called thee and him, and say to thee, Give place to this, and then thou shalt begin with shame to hold the lowest place.

¹⁰ But when thou art bidden to a feast, go, and sit down in the last place, that when he cometh, that bade thee to the feast, he say to thee, Friend, come up higher. Then worship shall be to thee, before men that sit together at the meat.

¹¹ For each that enhanceth himself, shall be lowed or be made low; and he that meeketh himself, shall be highed.

¹² And he said to him, that had bidden him to the feast, When thou makest a meat, or a supper, do not thou call thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy cousins, neither neighbours, nor rich men; lest peradventure they bid thee again to the feast, and it be yielded again to thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call poor men, feeble men, crooked, and blind,

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not whereof to yield again to thee, for it shall be yielded to thee in the rising again of just men.

¹⁵ And when one of them that sat together at the meat, had heard these things, he said to him, Blessed is he, that shall eat bread in the realm of God.

²¹ And the servant turned again, and told these things to his lord. Then the husbandman was wroth, and said to his servant, Go out swiftly into the great streets and the small streets of the city, and bring in hither poor men, and feeble, and blind men, and crooked.

⁵ And he answered to them, and said, Whose ass or ox of you shall fall into a pit, and he shall not anon draw him out in the day of sabbath? (And he said to them, Whose ass or ox of yours shall fall into a pit, and he shall not at once pull him out on the Sabbath day?)

¹⁰ But when thou art bidden to a feast, go, and sit down in the last place, (so) that when he cometh, that bade thee to the feast, he say to thee, Friend, come up higher. Then worship shall be to thee, before men that sit together at the meat, (or Then honour shall be to thee, before those who sit together at the meal).

⁵ And he answeride to hem, and seide, Whos asse or oxe of you schal falle in to a pit, and `he schal not anoon drawe hym out in the dai of the sabat?

⁶ And thei myyten not answere to hym to these thingis.

⁷ He seide also a parable to men bodun to a feeste, and biheld hou thei chesen the first sittyng placis, and seide to hem,

⁸ Whanne thou art bodun to bridalis, sitte not `at the mete in the firste place; lest perauenture a worthier than thou be bodun of hym,

⁹ and lest he come that clepide thee and hym, and seie to thee, Yyue place to this, and thanne thou schalt bigynne with schame to holde the lowest place.

¹⁰ But whanne thou art bedun to a feste, go, and sitte doun in the laste place, that whanne he cometh, that bad thee to the feeste, he seie to thee, Freend, come hiyer. Thanne worschip schal be to thee, bifor men that sitten at the mete.

¹¹ For ech that enhaunsith hym, schal be lowid; and he that meketh hym, schal be hiyed.

¹² And he seide to hym, that hadde bodun hym to the feeste, Whanne thou makist a mete, or a soper, nyle thou clepe thi freendis, nether thi britheren, nethir cosyns, nethir neiyboris, ne riche men; lest perauenture thei bidde thee ayen to the feeste, and it be yolde ayen to thee.

¹³ But whanne thou makist a feeste, clepe pore men,

¹⁴ feble, crokid, and blynde, and thou schalt be blessid; for thei han not wherof to yelde thee, for it schal be yoldun to thee in the risyng ayen of iust men.

¹⁵ And whanne oon of hem that saten togider at the mete hadde herd these thingis, he seide to hym, Blessid is he, that schal ete breed in the rewme of God.

¹⁶ And he seide to hym, A man made a greet soper, and clepide many.

¹⁷ And he sent his seruaunt in the our of soper, to seie to men that weren bodun to the feeste, that thei schulden come, for now alle thingis ben redi.

¹⁸ And alle bigunnen togidir to excusen hem. The firste seide, Y haue bouyt a toun, and Y haue nede to go out, and se it; Y preye thee, haue me excusid.

¹⁹ And the tother seide, Y haue bouyt fyue yockis of oxun, and Y go to preue hem; Y preye thee, haue me excusid.

²⁰ And an othir seide, Y haue weddid a wijf; and therfor Y may not come.

²¹ And the seruaunt turnede ayen, and tolde these thingis to his lord. Thanne the hosebonde man was wrooth, and seide to his seruaunt, Go out swithe in to the grete stretis and smal stretis of the citee, and brynge ynne hidir pore men, and feble, blynde, and crokid.

⁵ and answering them he said, 'Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a pit, and he will not immediately draw it up on the sabbath-day?'

⁶ and they were not able to answer him again unto these things.

⁷ And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them,

⁸ 'When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him,

⁹ and he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place.

¹⁰ 'But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee;

¹¹ because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'

¹² And he said also to him who did call him, 'When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee;

¹³ but when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind,

¹⁴ and happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.'

¹⁵ And one of those reclining with him, having heard these things, said to him, 'Happy is he who shall eat bread in the reign of God;'

¹⁶ and he said to him, 'A certain man made a great supper, and called many,

¹⁷ and he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, Be coming, because now are all things ready.

¹⁸ 'And they began with one consent all to excuse themselves: The first said to him, A field I bought, and I have need to go forth and see it; I beg of thee, have me excused.

¹⁹ 'And another said, Five yoke of oxen I bought, and I go on to prove them; I beg of thee, have me excused:

²⁰ and another said, A wife I married, and because of this I am not able to come.

²¹ 'And that servant having come, told to his lord these things, then the master of the house, having been angry, said to his servant, Go forth quickly to the broad places and lanes of the city, and the poor, and maimed, and lame, and blind, bring in hither.
