Luke 14:11-18 in English

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹² And he said to him also that had bidden him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, bid the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; because they have not wherewith to recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed in the resurrection of the just.

¹⁵ And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ But he said unto him, A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many:

¹⁷ and he sent forth his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it; I pray thee have me excused.

¹¹ For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

¹¹ Also, remember this: God will humble those who exalt themselves. And he will exalt those who humble themselves.”

¹² Jesus also said to the Pharisee who had invited him to the meal, “When you (sg) invite people to a midday or evening meal, do not invite your friends or your family or your other relatives or your rich neighbors. They can later invite you (sg) for a meal. In that way they will repay you.

¹³ Instead, when you (sg) give a feast, invite poor people, crippled people, lame people, or blind people.

¹⁴ They will be unable to repay you. But God will bless you! He will repay you at the time when he causes righteous people to become alive again.”

¹⁵ One of those who were eating with Jesus heard him say that. He said to Jesus, “God has truly blessed us Jews who will eat with the Messiah when he starts to rule!”

¹⁶ But to show that many Jews whom God had invited would not accept God's invitation MET, Jesus replied to him, “One time a man decided to prepare a large feast. He invited many people to come.

¹⁷ When it was the day for the feast, he sent his servant to tell those who had been {whom he had} invited, ‘Come now because everything is ready!’

¹⁸ But when the servant did that, all of the people whom he had invited began to say why they did not want to come. The first man the servant went to said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please ask your master to forgive me for not coming!’

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹² He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”

¹⁵ When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!”

¹¹ For every man who gives himself a high place will be put down, but he who takes a low place will be lifted up.

¹² And he said to the master of the house, When you give a feast, do not send for your friends and your brothers and your family or your neighbours who have wealth, for they may give a feast for you, and so you will get a reward.

¹³ But when you give a feast, send for the poor and the blind and those who are broken in body:

¹⁴ And you will have a blessing, because they will not be able to give you any payment, and you will get your reward when the upright come back from the dead.

¹⁵ And, hearing these words, one of those who were at table with him said to him, Happy is the man who will be a guest in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And he said to them, A certain man gave a great feast, and sent word of it to a number of people.

¹⁷ And when the time had come, he sent his servants to say to them, Come, for all things are now ready.

¹⁸ And they all gave reasons why they were not able to come. The first said to him, I have got a new field, and it is necessary for me to go and see it: I am full of regret that I am unable to come.

¹¹ for every one that exalts himself shall be abased, and he that abases himself shall be exalted.

¹² And he said also to him that had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsfolk, nor rich neighbours, lest it may be they also should invite thee in return, and a recompense be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call poor, crippled, lame, blind:

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not the means to recompense thee; for it shall be recompensed thee in the resurrection of the just.

¹⁵ And one of those that were lying at table with them, hearing these things, said to him, Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ And he said to him, A certain man made a great supper and invited many.

¹⁷ And he sent his bondman at the hour of supper to say to those who were invited, Come, for already all things are ready.

¹⁸ And all began, without exception, to excuse themselves. The first said to him, I have bought land, and I must go out and see it; I pray thee hold me for excused.

¹¹ Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

¹² And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind;

¹⁴ And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just.

¹⁵ When one of them that sat at table with him, had heard these things, he said to him: Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper, and invited many.

¹⁷ And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready.

¹⁸ And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.”

¹² Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

¹³ But whenever you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they do not have anything to repay you; for it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the just.”

¹⁵ Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who shall eat breakfast in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great banquet, and he invited many,

¹⁷ and he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’

¹⁸ But they all with one accord began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I must go and see it. I ask you, have me excused.’

¹¹ Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹² Then He said directly to His host: “Whenever you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

¹³ But whenever you make a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you—you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

¹⁵ Well when one of the fellow-recliners heard these things, he said to Him, “Blessed is he who will eat dinner in the Kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ So He said to him: “A certain man prepared a great banquet and invited many.

¹⁷ And at meal time he sent his slave to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’

¹⁸ But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him: ‘I bought a field, and I need to go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’

¹¹ For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

¹² Then he said to the man who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don't invite your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors, for they may invite you back, and then you'd be repaid.

¹³ Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, for they have nothing to repay you with, and you'll be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”

¹⁵ When one of them eating at the table with Jesus heard this, he said to Jesus, “How wonderful it will be for those who feast in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ “Once there was a man who prepared a great banquet, and invited many guests,” Jesus replied.

¹⁷ “When it was time to eat he sent his servant out to tell everyone who had been invited, ‘Come, because the banquet's ready.’

¹⁸ But they all started to make excuses. The first said, ‘I've just bought a field and I have to go and see it. Please excuse me.’

¹¹ For whosoeuer exalteth himselfe, shall be brought lowe, and he that humbleth himselfe, shall be exalted.

¹² Then said he also to him that had bidden him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friendes, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsemen, nor ye riche neighbours, lest they also bid thee againe, and a recompence be made thee.

¹³ But when thou makest a feast, call ye poore, the maimed, the lame, and the blind,

¹⁴ And thou shalt be blessed, because they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the iust.

¹⁵ Nowe when one of them that sate at table, heard these things, he said vnto him, Blessed is he that eateth bread in the kingdome of God.

¹⁶ Then saide he to him, A certaine man made a great supper, and bade many,

¹⁷ And sent his seruant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come: for all things are nowe readie.

¹⁸ But they all with one mind beganne to make excuse: The first saide vnto him, I haue bought a farme, and I must needes goe out and see it: I pray thee, haue me excused.

¹¹ For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹³ No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot reward you; for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”

¹⁵ One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed, “Happy will be the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ But Jesus said to him, “A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,

¹⁷ and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

¹⁸ They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first said to the servant ‘I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.’

¹¹ For everyone who exalts themselves will be humbled, and everyone who humbles themselves will be exalted.”

¹² Then Jesus went on to say to the man who had invited him, “When you give a breakfast or a dinner, do not ask your friends, or your brothers or sisters, or your relatives, or rich neighbors, because they might invite you in return, and so you should be repaid.

¹³ No, when you entertain, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁴ and then you will be happy indeed, since they cannot reward you; for you will be rewarded at the resurrection of the good.”

¹⁵ One of the guests heard what he said and exclaimed, “Happy will be the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”

¹⁶ But Jesus said to him, “A man was once giving a great dinner. He invited many people,

¹⁷ and sent his servant, when it was time for the dinner, to say to those who had been invited ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

¹⁸ They all with one accord began to ask to be excused. The first said to the servant ‘I have bought a field and am obliged to go and look at it. I must ask you to consider me excused.’

¹² He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also teshuvah ·completely return· the favor, and pay you back.

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the upright.”

¹⁵ When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!”

¹⁶ But he said to him, “A certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.

¹⁷ He sent out his servant at supper time to tell those who were invited, ‘Come, for everything is ready now.’

¹⁸ They all as one began to make excuses. “The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please have me excused.’

¹¹ You see, if you try to make yourself important, God will make you ashamed. But if you make yourself not important, God will get people to respect you.”

¹² Then Jesus talked to the boss of that house. He said, “Whenever you put on a lunch or a dinner, for other people to come and eat it with you, don’t ask you family, or your friends, or the rich people that live near you, to come to that meal. If you ask those people to come, later they will ask you to come to eat a meal with them. That will be the only pay you get for feeding them.

¹³ Instead of that, ask poor people to come and eat with you. Maybe they are crippled, or blind, or they can’t walk, so they can’t get jobs to get some pay, so they are too poor to put on a meal for you.

¹⁴ There’s no way they can pay you for that feed. But God will make you real happy. On the day when God will make everyone alive again, at that time he will pay you properly for that good thing you did for those poor people.”

¹⁵ One of the men sitting there heard the words that Jesus said, and that man said, “It will be real good to be at the dinner that God will put on for all his family.”

¹⁶ Jesus told him this picture story. He said, “An important man put on a big dinner. He asked a lot of people to come to eat that dinner with him.

¹⁷ When all the food was ready, he sent his worker out to tell them to come. He said to each one of them, ‘You can come now, the dinner is ready for you.’

¹⁸ But each one told him they couldn’t come to that dinner. One of them said, ‘I have bought a garden, so I have to go and look at it. Please tell your boss I’m sorry, but I can’t come to his dinner.’

¹¹ For whosoever exalteth him sylfe shalbe brought lowe. And he that hubleth him sylfe shalbe exalted

¹² Then sayde he also to him that had desyred him to diner: When thou makest a diner or a supper: call not thy frendes nor thy brethren nether thy kinsmen nor yet ryche neghbours: lest they bidde the agayne and a recompence be made the.

¹³ But when thou makest afeast call the poore the maymed the lame and the blynde

¹⁴ and thou shalt be happy for they cannot recompence the. But thou shalt be recompensed at the resurreccion of the iuste men.

¹⁵ When one of them that sate at meate also hearde that he sayde vnto him: happy is he that eateth breed in the kyngdome of God.

¹⁶ Then sayd he to him. A certayne man ordened a greate supper and bade many

¹⁷ and sent his servaunt at supper tyme to saye to them that wer bidden come: for all thinges are now redy.

¹⁸ And they all atonce begane to make excuse. The fyrst sayd vnto him: I have bought a ferme and I must nedes goo and se it I praye the have me excused.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹⁶ Then said he to him, A certain man made a great supper, and invited many:

¹⁷ And sent his servant at supper-time, to say to them that were invited, Come, for all things are now ready.

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

¹² He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.

¹³ But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind;

¹⁴ and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”

¹⁵ When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!”

¹² And he seide to hym, that hadde bodun hym to the feeste, Whanne thou makist a mete, or a soper, nyle thou clepe thi freendis, nether thi britheren, nethir cosyns, nethir neiyboris, ne riche men; lest perauenture thei bidde thee ayen to the feeste, and it be yolde ayen to thee.

¹³ But whanne thou makist a feeste, clepe pore men,

¹⁴ feble, crokid, and blynde, and thou schalt be blessid; for thei han not wherof to yelde thee, for it schal be yoldun to thee in the risyng ayen of iust men.

¹⁵ And whanne oon of hem that saten togider at the mete hadde herd these thingis, he seide to hym, Blessid is he, that schal ete breed in the rewme of God.

¹⁶ And he seide to hym, A man made a greet soper, and clepide many.

¹⁷ And he sent his seruaunt in the our of soper, to seie to men that weren bodun to the feeste, that thei schulden come, for now alle thingis ben redi.

¹⁸ And alle bigunnen togidir to excusen hem. The firste seide, Y haue bouyt a toun, and Y haue nede to go out, and se it; Y preye thee, haue me excusid.

¹¹ because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'

¹² And he said also to him who did call him, 'When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee;

¹³ but when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind,

¹⁴ and happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.'

¹⁵ And one of those reclining with him, having heard these things, said to him, 'Happy is he who shall eat bread in the reign of God;'

¹⁶ and he said to him, 'A certain man made a great supper, and called many,

¹⁷ and he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, Be coming, because now are all things ready.

¹⁸ 'And they began with one consent all to excuse themselves: The first said to him, A field I bought, and I have need to go forth and see it; I beg of thee, have me excused.
