³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

⁴⁰ Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

⁴¹ And Peter said, Lord, speakest thou this parable unto us, or even unto all?

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall set over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

⁴³ Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

⁴⁴ Of a truth I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath.

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken;

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the unfaithful.

⁴⁷ And that servant, who knew his lord’s will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;

³⁹ But you must also remember this: If owners of a house knew what time a thief was coming, they would stay awake and would not allow their house to be broken into and their goods to be stolen { the thief to break into the house and steal their goods}.

⁴⁰ Similarly, you must be ready for me to return, because I, the one who came from heaven, will come again at a time when you do not expect me to come.”

⁴¹ Peter said, “Lord, are you (sg) speaking this illustration only for us or for everyone else also?”

⁴² The Lord replied, “ I am saying it for you and for anyone else MET, RHQ who is like a faithful and wise manager in his master's house. His master appoints him to supervise affairs in his house and to give all the other servants their food at the proper time. Then he leaves on a long trip.

⁴³ If the servant is doing that work when his master returns, his master will be very pleased with him.

⁴⁴ I tell you this: His master will appoint him to supervise all of his affairs permanently.

⁴⁵ But that servant might think to himself, ‘My master has been away for a long time, so he probably will not return soon and find out what I am doing.’ Then he might start to beat the other servants, both male and female ones. He might also start to eat a lot of food and get drunk.

⁴⁶ If he does that, and if his master returns on a day when the servant does not expect him, then his master will ◄cut him into two pieces/punish him severely► HYP and put him in the place where he puts all those who do not serve him faithfully.

⁴⁷ Every servant who knows what his master wants him to do but who does not get himself ready and does not do what his master desires will be beaten severely { The master will beat severely every servant who knows what his master wants him to do but who does not get himself ready and does not do what his master desires}.

⁴⁸ But every servant who did not know what his master wanted him to do, and who did things for which he deserved to be punished, will be beaten lightly { the master will beat lightly every servant who did not know what his master wanted him to do and did the things for which he deserved that his master would beat him}. God will treat his people similarly, because he expects a lot from those people whom he has allowed to understand a lot. People who entrust things to others' care expect those people to care for those things very well. Similarly, God expects a lot from those people whom he has allowed to understand a lot. Furthermore, he expects the most from people to whom he has given the most ability.”

⁴⁰ So be ready: for the Son of man is coming at a time when you are not looking for him.

⁴¹ And Peter said to him, Lord, are these words said to us only, or to all men?

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is the wise and responsible servant whom his lord will put in control of his family, to give them their food at the right time?

⁴³ Happy is that servant who, when his lord comes, is doing so.

⁴⁴ Truly I say to you, he will put him in control of all his goods.

⁴⁵ But if that servant says to himself, My lord is a long time coming; and goes about giving blows to the men-servants and the women-servants, feasting and taking overmuch wine;

⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come at a time when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not ready for him, and he will have him cut in two and will give him his part in the fate of those who have no faith;

⁴⁷ And the servant who had knowledge of his lord's desires and was not ready for him and did not do as he was ordered, will be given a great number of blows;

⁴⁸ But he who, without knowledge, did things for which punishment is given, will get only a small number of blows. The man to whom much is given, will have to give much; if much is given into his care, of him more will be requested.

⁴⁰ And ye therefore, be ye ready, for in the hour in which ye do not think it, the Son of man comes.

⁴³ Blessed is that bondman whom his lord on coming shall find doing thus;

⁴⁴ verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he has.

⁴⁵ But if that bondman should say in his heart, My lord delays to come, and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and to drink and to be drunken,

⁴⁶ the lord of that bondman shall come in a day when he does not expect it, and in an hour he knows not of, and shall cut him in two and appoint his portion with the unbelievers.

⁴⁷ But that bondman who knew his own lord's will, and had not prepared himself nor done his will, shall be beaten with many stripes;

⁴⁸ but he who knew it not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few. And to every one to whom much has been given, much shall be required from him; and to whom men have committed much, they will ask from him the more.

³⁹ But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.

⁴⁰ Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.

⁴¹ And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?

⁴² And the Lord said: Who (thinkest thou) is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

⁴³ Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.

⁴⁴ Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth.

⁴⁵ But if that servant shall say in his heart: My lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:

⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not, and shall separate him, and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.

⁴⁷ And that servant who knew the will of his lord, and prepared not himself, and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.

³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and not allowed his house to be broken into.

⁴⁰ Therefore you also be ready, for in an hour that you think not, the Son of Man comes.”

⁴¹ Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?”

⁴² And the Lord said, “Who then is a faithful and wise manager, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season?

⁴³ Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

⁴⁴ Truly I say to you, that he will appoint him over all his possessions.

⁴⁵ But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk,

⁴⁶ the master of that servant will come on a day which he does not expect, and at an hour which he does not know, and he will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

⁴⁷ And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not get ready or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many blows.

⁴⁸ But he who did not know, yet did things worthy of blows, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been entrusted, of him they will ask much more.

⁴³ Blessed is that slave whom his master will find so doing when he comes.

⁴⁴ I tell you truly that he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

⁴⁵ But if that servant should say in his heart, ‘My master won't come for a while,’ and should begin to hit the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

⁴⁶ the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in two and appoint his portion with the unbelievers.

⁴⁷ “That servant who knew his master's will, but neither got ready nor did according to that will, will be beaten with many blows.

⁴⁸ But he who did not know, yet did things worthy of blows, will be beaten with few. Everyone to whom much has been given, from him much will be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him much more will be asked.

³⁹ But remember this: if the master knew when a thief was coming, he would keep watch, and not allow his house be broken into.

⁴⁰ You must also be ready, for the Son of man is coming when you don't expect him.”

⁴¹ “Is this story you're telling just for us, or for everyone?” Peter asked.

⁴² The Lord replied, “Who then is the trustworthy and wise manager, the one person in the household that the master puts in charge to share out their food at the right time?

⁴³ It will be good for that servant when his master returns and finds him doing what he should.

⁴⁴ I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of everything.

⁴⁵ But what if the servant were to say to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and then starts beating the other servants, both men and women, feasting and getting drunk?

⁴⁶ That servant's master will return unexpectedly one day at a time he wasn't aware of, and will punish him severely, treating him as totally untrustworthy.

⁴⁷ That servant who knew what his master wanted and yet didn't get ready or follow his instructions, will be beaten severely;

⁴⁸ but the servant who didn't know and did things deserving punishment will be beaten only lightly. From those who are given much, much will be required, and from those who are entrusted with more, more will be demanded.

³⁹ Nowe vnderstand this, that if the good man of the house had knowen at what houre the theefe would haue come, he would haue watched, and would not haue suffered his house to be digged through.

⁴⁰ Be ye also prepared therefore: for the Sonne of man will come at an houre when ye thinke not.

⁴¹ Then Peter saide vnto him, Master, tellest thou this parable vnto vs, or euen to all?

⁴² And the Lord saide, Who is a faithfull steward and wise, whom the master shall make ruler ouer his householde, to giue them their portion of meate in season?

⁴³ Blessed is that seruant, whom his master when he commeth, shall finde so doing.

⁴⁴ Of a trueth I say vnto you, that he wil make him ruler ouer all that he hath.

⁴⁵ But if that seruant say in his heart, My master doeth deferre his comming, and ginne to smite the seruants, and maydens, and to eate, and drinke, and to be drunken,

⁴⁶ The master of that seruant will come in a day when he thinketh not, and at an houre when he is not ware of, and will cut him off, and giue him his portion with the vnbeleeuers.

⁴⁷ And that seruant that knewe his masters will, and prepared not himselfe, neither did according to his will, shalbe beaten with many stripes.

⁴⁸ But he that knewe it not, and yet did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with fewe stripes: for vnto whomsoeuer much is giuen, of him shalbe much required, and to whom men much commit, the more of him will they aske.

⁴¹ “Master,” said Peter, “are you telling this parable with reference to us or to everyone?”

⁴² “Who, then,” replied the Master, “is that trustworthy steward, the careful man, who will be placed by his master over his establishment, to give them their rations at the proper time?

⁴³ Happy will that servant be whom his master, when he comes home, will find doing this.

⁴⁴ His master, I tell you, will put him in charge of the whole of his property.

⁴⁵ But should that servant say to himself ‘My master is a long time coming,’ and begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

⁴⁶ that servant's master will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour of which he is unaware, and will flog him severely and assign him his place amongst the untrustworthy.

⁴⁷ The servant who knows his master's wishes and yet does not prepare and act accordingly will receive many lashes;

⁴⁸ while one who does not know his master's wishes, but acts so as to deserve a flogging, will receive but few. From everyone to whom much has been given much will be expected, and from the man to whom much has been entrusted the more will be demanded.

⁴¹ Then Peter sayde vnto him: Master tellest thou this similitude vnto vs or to all men?

⁴² And the Lorde sayde: If there be any faith full servaut and wise whom his Lorde shall make ruler over his housholde to geve them their duetie of meate at due season:

⁴³ happy is that servaunt whom his master when he cometh shall finde soo doinge.

⁴⁴ Of a trueth I saye vnto you: that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

⁴⁵ But and yf the evyll servaunt shall saye in his hert: My master wyll differre his cominge and shall beginne to smyte the servauntes and maydens and to eate and drinke and to be dronken:

⁴⁶ the Lorde of that servaunt will come in a daye when he thinketh not and at an houre when he is not ware and will devyde him and will geve him his rewarde with the vnbelevers.

⁴⁷ The servaut that knewe his masters will and prepared not him selfe nether dyd accordinge to his will shalbe bete with many strypes.

⁴⁸ But he that knewe not and yet dyd committe thinges worthy of strypes shalbe beaten with feawe strypes. For vnto whom moche is geven of him shalbe moche requyred. And to whom men moche commyt the moare of him will they axe.

³⁹ But understand this, that if the master of the house had known the hour the thief was coming he would not have let his house be broken into.

⁴⁰ Be ready also, because you do not know the hour when the Son of Man comes.”

⁴¹ Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable only to us, or also to everyone?”

⁴² The Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager whom his lord will set over his other servants to give them their portion of food at the right time?

⁴³ Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing that when he comes.

⁴⁴ Truly I say to you that he will set him over all his property.

⁴⁵ But if that servant says in his heart, 'My lord delays his return,' and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink, and to become drunk,

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant will come in a day when he does not expect, and in an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and appoint a place for him with the unfaithful.

⁴⁷ That servant, having known his lord's will, and not having prepared or done according to his will, will be beaten with many blows.

⁴⁸ But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating, he will be beaten with a few blows. But everyone who has been given much, from them much will be required, and the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked.

³⁹ But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.

⁴⁰ Therefore be ready also, for the Son of Man is coming in an hour that you don’t expect him.”

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and committed things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes . For to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom men have committed much, from him they will ask the more.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who, guessest thou, is a true or a faithful dispenser, and prudent, whom the lord hath ordained on his meine, to give them in time a measure of wheat?

⁴³ Blessed is that servant, that the lord when he cometh, shall find so doing.

⁴⁴ Verily I say to you, that on all things that he wieldeth, he shall ordain him.

⁴⁵ That if that servant say in his heart, My lord tarrieth to come; and begin to smite children, and hand-maidens, and eat, and drink, and be filled or full-filled over-measure,

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant shall come, in the day that he hopeth not, and in the hour that he knoweth not, and shall part him, and put his part with unfaithful men.

⁴⁷ But that servant that knew the will of his lord, and made not him ready, and did not after his will, shall be beaten with many beatings.

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and did worthy things of strokes, shall be beaten with few. For to each man to whom much is given, much shall be asked of him; and they shall ask more of him, to whom they betook much.

³⁹ And know ye this thing, for if an husbandman knew, in what hour the thief would come, soothly he should wake, and not suffer his house to be (under)mined, (or truly he would be on watch, and not allow his house to be undermined).

⁴⁰ And be ye ready, for in what hour ye guess not, man’s Son shall come.

⁴¹ And Peter said to him, Lord, sayest thou this parable to us, or to all?

⁴² And the Lord said, Who, guessest thou, is a true or a faithful dispenser, and prudent, whom the lord hath ordained on his household, to give them in time a measure of wheat? (And the Lord said, Who, thinkest thou, is a true, or a faithful, and prudent steward, whom the lord hath ordained over his household, to give them a measure of wheat at the proper time?)

⁴³ Blessed is that servant, that the lord when he cometh, shall find so doing. Blessed is that servant, whom when the lord shall come, he shall find doing so.

⁴⁴ Verily I say to you, that on all things that he wieldeth, he shall ordain him. (Truly I say to you, or I tell you the truth, that he shall ordain him over everything that he possesseth.)

⁴⁵ That if that servant say in his heart (or But if that servant say in his heart), My lord tarrieth to come; and begin to smite children (or the other servants), and handmaidens, and eat, and drink, and be filled or be full-filled over-measure,

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant shall come, in the day that he hopeth not, and in the hour that he knoweth not, and shall part him (or and shall divide him in pieces), and put his part with unfaithful men.

⁴⁷ But that servant that knew the will of his lord, and made not him(self) ready, and did not after his will, shall be beaten with many beatings.

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and did worthy things of strokes, shall be beaten with few. For to each man to whom much is given, much shall be asked of him; and they shall ask more of him, to whom they betook much, (or and they shall ask more from him, to whom they have delivered, or entrusted, much).

³⁹ And wite ye this thing, for if an hosebonde man wiste, in what our the theef wolde come, sotheli he schulde wake, and not suffre his hous to be myned.

⁴⁰ And be ye redi, for in what our ye gessen not, mannus sone schal come.

⁴¹ And Petre seide to hym, Lord, seist thou this parable to vs, or to alle?

⁴² And the Lord seide, Who, gessist thou, is a trewe dispendere, and a prudent, whom the lord hath ordeyned on his meyne, to yyue hem in tyme mesure of whete?

⁴³ Blessid is that seruaunt, that the lord whanne he cometh, schal fynde so doynge.

⁴⁴ Verili Y seie to you, that on alle thingis that he weldith, he schal ordeyne hym.

⁴⁵ That if that seruaunt seie in his herte, My lord tarieth to come; and bigynne to smyte children, and handmaydenes, and ete, and drynke, and be fulfillid ouer mesure,

⁴⁶ the lord of that seruaunt schal come, in the dai that he hopith not, and the our that he woot not; and schal departe hym, and putte his part with vnfeithful men.

⁴⁷ But thilke seruaunt that knew the wille of his lord, and made not hym redi, and dide not aftir his wille, schal be betun with many betyngis.

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and dide worthi thingis of strokis, schal be betun with fewe. For to eche man to whom myche is youun, myche schal be axid of hym; and thei schulen axe more of hym, to whom thei bitoken myche.

³⁹ 'And this know, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief doth come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through;

⁴⁰ and ye, then, become ye ready, because at the hour ye think not, the Son of Man doth come.'

⁴¹ And Peter said to him, 'Sir, unto us this simile dost thou speak, or also unto all?'

⁴² And the Lord said, 'Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the lord shall set over his household, to give in season the wheat measure?

⁴³ Happy that servant, whom his lord, having come, shall find doing so;

⁴⁴ truly I say to you, that over all his goods he will set him.

⁴⁵ 'And if that servant may say in his heart, My lord doth delay to come, and may begin to beat the men-servants and the maid-servants, to eat also, and to drink, and to be drunken;

⁴⁶ the lord of that servant will come in a day in which he doth not look for him, and in an hour that he doth not know, and will cut him off, and his portion with the unfaithful he will appoint.

⁴⁷ 'And that servant, who having known his lord's will, and not having prepared, nor having gone according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes,

⁴⁸ and he who, not having known, and having done things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few; and to every one to whom much was given, much shall be required from him; and to whom they did commit much, more abundantly they will ask of him.
