Luke 12:13-21 in English

¹³ And one out of the multitude said unto him, Teacher, bid my brother divide the inheritance with me.

¹⁴ But he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits?

¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

¹³ And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

¹³ Then one of the people in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my older brother to divide my father's property and give me the part that belongs to me!”

¹⁴ But Jesus replied to him, “Man, ◄no one appointed me in order that I would settle matters when people are disputing about property!/did anyone appoint me in order that I would settle matters when people are disputing about property?► RHQ”

¹⁵ Then he said to the whole crowd, “Guard yourselves very carefully, in order that you do not desire other people's things in any way! No one can make his life secure by obtaining many possessions.”

¹⁶ Then Jesus told the people this illustration: “There was a certain rich man whose crops grew very well.

¹⁷ So he said to himself, ‘I do not know what to do, because I do not have any place big enough to store all my crops!’

¹⁸ Then he thought to himself, ‘ I know what I will do! I will tear down my grain bins and build larger ones! Then I will store all my wheat and other goods in the big new bins.

¹⁹ Then I will say to myself SYN, “Now I have plenty of goods stored up. They will last for many years. So now I will take life easy. I will eat and drink all that I want to and be happy for a long time!”’

²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You foolish man! Tonight you will die! ◄Then all the goods you have saved up for yourself will belong to someone else, not to you!/Do you think that you will benefit from all that you have stored up for yourself?► RHQ’”

²¹ Then Jesus ended this illustration by saying, “That is what will happen to those who store up goods just for themselves, but who do not value the things that God considers valuable.”

¹⁴ But he said, Man, who made me a judge or a maker of decisions for you?

¹⁵ And he said to them, Take care to keep yourselves free from the desire for property; for a man's life is not made up of the number of things which he has.

¹⁶ And he said to them, in a story, The land of a certain man of great wealth was very fertile:

¹⁷ And he said to himself, What is to be done? for I have no place in which to put all my fruit.

¹⁸ And he said, This I will do: I will take down my store-houses and make greater ones, and there I will put all my grain and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have a great amount of goods in store, enough for a number of years; be at rest, take food and wine and be happy.

²⁰ But God said to him, You foolish one, tonight I will take your soul from you, and who then will be the owner of all the things which you have got together?

²¹ So that is what comes to the man who gets wealth for himself, and has not wealth in the eyes of God.

¹³ And a person said to him out of the crowd, Teacher, speak to my brother to divide the inheritance with me.

¹⁴ But he said to him, Man, who established me as a judge or a divider over you?

¹⁵ And he said to them, Take heed and keep yourselves from all covetousness, for it is not because a man is in abundance that his life is in his possessions.

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The land of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly.

¹⁷ And he reasoned within himself saying, What shall I do? for I have not a place where I shall lay up my fruits.

¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will take away my granaries and build greater, and there I will lay up all my produce and my good things;

¹⁹ and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much good things laid by for many years; repose thyself, eat, drink, be merry.

²⁰ But God said to him, Fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; and whose shall be what thou hast prepared?

²¹ Thus is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

¹³ And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.

¹⁴ But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge, or divider, over you?

¹⁵ And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.

¹⁶ And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.

¹⁷ And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

¹⁸ And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me, and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thy rest; eat, drink, make good cheer.

²⁰ But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee: and whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.

¹³ Then someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ But He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

¹⁵ And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

¹⁶ Then He told a parable to them, saying: “The field of a certain rich man produced well.

¹⁷ And he reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, because I have nowhere to gather my crops?’

¹⁸ So he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and I will build bigger ones, and there I will gather all my crops and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid away for many years; relax; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’

²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have prepared?’

²¹ “So is he who accumulates treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

¹³ Then someone from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ But He said to him, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter over you?”

¹⁵ Then He said to them, “Keep alert and guard against covetousness, because one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

¹⁶ Then He told them a parable, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man produced well.

¹⁷ And he reasoned within himself saying, ‘What shall I do, because I have no place to store my crops?’

¹⁸ Then he said: ‘This is what I will do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my produce and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul: Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and enjoy yourself!’

²⁰ But God said to him: ‘Stupid! This very night your life is being taken back from you; then who will get the things you have prepared?’

²¹ Just like that is he who accumulates treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

¹³ Someone in the crowd asked Jesus, “Teacher, please tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ “My friend,” Jesus replied, “Who appointed me as your judge to decide how your inheritance should be divided?” He told the people,

¹⁵ “Watch out, and beware of all greedy thoughts and actions, for a person's life isn't summed up by all the things they own.”

¹⁶ Then he told them a story as an illustration. “Once there was a rich man who owned land that was very productive.

¹⁷ The man said to himself, ‘What shall I do? I've nowhere to store my crops.

¹⁸ I know what I'll do,’ he decided. ‘I'll pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and then I'll be able to store all my crops and everything I own.

¹⁹ Then I'll tell myself: You have enough to live on for many years, so take life easy: eat, drink, and enjoy yourself!’

²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You foolish man! Your life will be demanded back this very night, and then who will get everything you've stored up?’

²¹ This is what happens to people who hoard up wealth for themselves but are not rich as far as God is concerned.”

¹³ And one of the companie said vnto him, Master, bidde my brother deuide the inheritance with me.

¹⁴ And he said vnto him, Man, who made me a iudge, or a deuider ouer you?

¹⁵ Wherefore he said vnto them, Take heede, and beware of couetousnesse: for though a man haue abundance, yet his life standeth not in his riches.

¹⁶ And he put foorth a parable vnto them, saying, The grounde of a certaine riche man brought foorth fruites plenteously.

¹⁷ Therefore he thought with himselfe, saying, What shall I doe, because I haue no roume, where I may lay vp my fruites?

¹⁸ And he said, This wil I do, I wil pul downe my barnes, and builde greater, and therein will I gather all my fruites, and my goods.

¹⁹ And I wil say to my soule, Soule, thou hast much goods laide vp for many yeeres: liue at ease, eate, drinke and take thy pastime.

²⁰ But God said vnto him, O foole, this night wil they fetch away thy soule from thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast prouided?

²¹ So is he that gathereth riches to himselfe, and is not riche in God.

¹³ And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

¹⁴ And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

¹⁸ This is what I will do,’ he said; ‘I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and store all my grain and my goods in them;

²⁰ But God said to the man ‘Fool! This very night your life is being demanded; and as for all you have prepared — who will have it?’

²¹ So it is with those who lay by wealth for themselves and are not rich to the glory of God.”

¹³ A man in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, my brother is cheating me. Our father died, and he left his things for my brother and me. But my brother took all those things, and he is keeping them for himself. Please tell my brother to be fair to me and give me my share of our father’s things.”

¹⁴ Jesus said, “It’s not my job to say which of you is right or wrong, or what each of you can have.”

¹⁵ Then he said to the people, “Think carefully about this. Don’t be greedy. Don’t try to get more things than you need. You can’t get a long happy life from the things you own, even if you are rich.”

¹⁶ Then Jesus told them this picture story, he said, “A rich man had a garden. He planted some seeds there, and they grew into very big plants, and then those plants got lots of seed tucker on them.

¹⁷ The man looked at it all and said to himself, ‘My shed is not big enough for all this seed tucker. Where will I put it all?’

¹⁸ He thought about it, then he said, ‘I know what to do. I will pull down my little sheds and build big sheds, and I will keep it all in those big sheds. And I will keep all my other things in those big sheds, too.

¹⁹ Then I will say, “Ah. I’ve got lots of stuff now. I’ve got enough in that shed to last me for a long time. I don’t have to do any work. I can just sit down and eat, and drink, and be happy.” ’

²⁰ But God said to him, ‘You are stupid. You are going to die tonight. Then what will happen to all this stuff in your shed? Who will get it? Not you.’

²¹ That is a picture story to tell you people this. If you only think about keeping things for yourself, and if you don’t think about getting friendly with God, you are stupid.”

¹³ One of the company sayde vnto hym: Master byd my brother devide the enheritauce with me.

¹⁴ And he sayde vnto him: Man who made me a iudge or a devider over you?

¹⁵ Wherfore he sayde vnto them: take hede and beware of covetousnes. For no mannes lyfe stondeth in the aboundaunce of the thinges which he possesseth.

¹⁶ And he put forth a similitude vnto them sayinge: The groude of a certayne riche man brought forth frutes plenteously

¹⁷ and he thought in himsilfe sayinge: what shall I do? because I have noo roume where to bestowe my frutes?

¹⁸ And he sayde: This will I do. I will destroye my barnes and bilde greater and therin will I gadder all my frutes and my goodes:

¹⁹ and I will saye to my soule: Soule thou hast moch goodes layde vp in stoore for many yeares take thyne ease: eate drinke and be mery.

²⁰ But God sayde vnto him: Thou fole this night will they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall thoose thinges be which thou hast provyded?

²¹ So is it with him that gadereth ryches and is not ryche in God.

¹³ Then someone from the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ Jesus said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or a mediator over you?”

¹⁵ He said to them, “Watch that you keep yourselves from all greedy desires, because a person's life does not consist of the abundance of his possessions.”

¹⁶ Then Jesus told them a parable, saying, “The field of a rich man yielded abundantly,

¹⁷ and he reasoned with himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I do not have a place to store my crops?'

¹⁸ He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all of my grain and other goods.

¹⁹ I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods stored up for many years. Rest easy, eat, drink, be merry.”'

²⁰ But God said to him, 'Foolish man, tonight your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?'

²¹ That is what someone is like who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

¹⁷ And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to deposit my fruits?

¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I deposit all my fruits and my goods.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast abundance of goods laid up for many years; take thy ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

²⁰ But God said to him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?

²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.

¹³ One of the multitude said to him, “Rabbi, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

¹⁵ He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

¹⁷ He reasoned within himself, saying, ‘What will I do, because I don’t have room to store my crops?’

¹⁸ He said, ‘This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

¹⁹ I will tell my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”’

²⁰ “But God said to him, ‘You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?’

²¹ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

¹³ One of the multitude said to him, “Rabbi, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

¹⁴ But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?”

¹⁵ He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”

¹⁵ And he said to them, See ye, and beware of all covetousness; for the life of a man is not in the abundance of the things, which he wieldeth.

¹⁶ And he told to them a likeness, and said, The field of a rich man brought forth plenteous fruits.

¹⁷ And he thought within himself, and said, What shall I do, for I have not whither I shall gather my fruits?

¹⁸ And he saith, This thing I shall do; I shall throw down my barns, and I shall make greater, and thither I shall gather all things that grow to me, and my goods.

¹⁹ And I shall say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods kept into full many years; rest thou, eat, drink, and make feast.

²⁰ And God said to him, Fool, in this night they shall take thy life from thee or they shall ask of thee thy soul. And whose shall those things be, that thou hast arrayed?

²¹ So is he that treasureth to himself, and is not rich in God.

¹³ And one of the people said to him, Master, say to my brother, that he part with me the heritage, (or Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me).

¹⁴ And he said to him, Man, who ordained me a doomsman or a parter, on you, or over you? (And he said to him, Man, who put me over you as a judge, or a divider?)

¹⁵ And he said to them, See ye, and beware of all covetousness; for the life of a man is not in the abundance of the things, which he wieldeth (or that he possesseth).

¹⁶ And he told to them a likeness (or a parable), and said, The field of a rich man brought forth plenteous fruits.

¹⁷ And he thought within himself, and said, What shall I do, for I have not whither I shall gather my fruits? (And he thought to himself, and said, What shall I do, for I have no place where I can store all my crops?)

¹⁸ And he saith, This thing I shall do; I shall throw down my barns, and I shall make greater (ones), and thither I shall gather all (the) things that grow to me (or and there I shall gather together all the things that grow for me), and (all) my goods.

¹⁹ And I shall say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods kept into full many years; rest thou, eat, drink, and make feast.

²⁰ And God said to him, Fool, in this night they shall take (away) thy life from thee, or Fool, in this night they shall ask of thee thy soul. And (then) whose shall those things be, that thou hast arrayed?

²¹ So is he that treasureth to himself, and is not rich in God.

¹³ And oon of the puple seide to hym, Maystir, seie to my brothir, that he departe with me the eritage.

¹⁴ And he seyde to hym, Man, who ordeynede me a domesman, or a departere, on you?

¹⁵ And he seide to hem, Se ye, and be ye war of al coueytice; for the lijf of a man is not in the abundaunce of tho thingis, whiche he weldith.

¹⁶ And he tolde to hem a liknesse, and seide, The feeld of a riche man brouyte forth plenteuouse fruytis.

¹⁷ And he thouyte with ynne hym silf, and seide, What schal Y do, for Y haue not whidur Y schal gadere my fruytis?

¹⁸ And he seith, This thing Y schal do; Y schal throwe doun my bernes, and Y schal make gretter, and thidir Y schal gadir alle thingis that growen to me, and my goodis.

¹⁹ And Y schal seie to my soule, Soule, thou hast many goodis kept in to ful many yeeris; rest thou, ete, drynke, and make feeste.

²⁰ And God seide to hym, Fool, in this nyyt thei schulen take thi lijf fro thee. And whos schulen tho thingis be, that thou hast arayed?

²¹ So is he that tresourith to hym silf, and is not riche in God.

¹³ And a certain one said to him, out of the multitude, 'Teacher, say to my brother to divide with me the inheritance.'

¹⁴ And he said to him, 'Man, who set me a judge or a divider over you?'

¹⁵ And he said unto them, 'Observe, and beware of the covetousness, because not in the abundance of one's goods is his life.'

¹⁶ And he spake a simile unto them, saying, 'Of a certain rich man the field brought forth well;

¹⁷ and he was reasoning within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where I shall gather together my fruits?

¹⁸ and he said, This I will do, I will take down my storehouses, and greater ones I will build, and I will gather together there all my products and my good things,

¹⁹ and I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many good things laid up for many years, be resting, eat, drink, be merry.

²⁰ 'And God said to him, Unthinking one! this night thy soul they shall require from thee, and what things thou didst prepare — to whom shall they be?

²¹ so is he who is treasuring up to himself, and is not rich toward God.'
