³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also?

⁴¹ But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, all things are clean unto you.

⁴² But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over justice and the love of God: but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

⁴³ Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe unto you! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over them know it not.

⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Teacher, in saying this thou reproachest us also.

⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ So ye are witnesses and consent unto the works of your fathers: for they killed them, and ye build their tombs.

⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and some of them they shall kill and persecute;

⁴⁵ Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

³⁹ The Lord Jesus said to Him, “You Pharisees are concerned about things that are outside your bodies, not with what is in your ◄ inner beings/hearts► MET. You wash the outside of cups and dishes before you eat because you think that doing that will make you acceptable to God, but within yourselves you are very greedy and wicked.

⁴⁰ You foolish people! God is concerned about things that are outside our bodies, but ◄he is certainly also concerned about our inner beings!/isn't he also concerned about our hearts?► RHQ

⁴¹ Give money to those who are poor. Give according to what you know within your ◄inner beings /hearts ► that you should give. Then you will be surprised to realize that you will be acceptable to God without having to perform all those rituals about washing.

⁴² But there will be terrible punishment for you Pharisees! You give to God a tenth of all you produce, even the various herbs that you grow, but you do not remember that you must act justly toward others and love God! It is good to give a tenth of your income to God, but you ought to do these other things also!

⁴³ There will be terrible punishment for you Pharisees, because you like to sit in the best seats in our worship places so that people will think highly of you, and you like people to greet you respectfully in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ There will be terrible punishment for you, because you are like ground where there is no marker to indicate that there is a grave underneath. People walk there, but they cannot see what is rotten down below MET! Similarly, people who see you do not realize how polluted you are within yourselves.”

⁴⁵ One of those who taught the Jewish laws replied, “Teacher, by saying this you (sg) are criticizing us also!”

⁴⁶ Jesus said, “It will be terrible also for you who teach the Jewish laws! You require people to obey many rules that are difficult to obey MET. That is like making them carry heavy burdens on their backs. But you yourselves do not obey the laws that you require others to obey. (OR, you do not do anything to help others to obey the laws.)

⁴⁷ There will be terrible punishment for you! You decorate the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed, but you do not live according to what the prophets taught.

⁴⁸ So you are declaring that you approve of what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you are not honoring the prophets! You just decorate their tombs!

⁴⁹ So God, who is very wise PRS, said, ‘I will send prophets and apostles to you Jews. You will kill some of them and cause some of them to suffer greatly.

³⁹ The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You foolish ones, didn’t he who made the outside make the inside also?

⁴¹ But give for gifts to the needy those things which are within, and behold, all things will be clean to you.

⁴² But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s love. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like hidden graves, and the men who walk over them don’t know it.”

⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying this you insult us also.”

⁴⁶ He said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load men with burdens that are difficult to carry, and you yourselves won’t even lift one finger to help carry those burdens.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ So you testify and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs.

³⁹ And the Lord said to him, You Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the plate clean; but inside you are thieves and full of evil.

⁴⁰ O you foolish ones! did not he who made the outside in the same way make the inside?

⁴¹ But if you give to the poor such things as you are able, then all things are clean to you.

⁴² But a curse is on you, Pharisees! for you make men give a tenth of every sort of plant, and give no thought to right and the love of God; but it is right for you to do these things, and not let the others be undone.

⁴³ A curse is on you, Pharisees! for your desires are for the most important seats in the Synagogues and for words of respect said to you in the market-place.

⁴⁴ A curse is on you! for you are like the resting-places of dead men, which are not seen, and men go walking over them without knowledge of it.

⁴⁵ And one of the teachers of the law, answering, said to him, Master, in saying this, you give a bad name to us as to them.

⁴⁶ And he said, A curse is on you, teachers of the law! for while other men are crushed under the weight of the rules you make for them, you yourselves do not put so much as one finger to them.

⁴⁷ A curse is on you! for you make resting-places for the bodies of the prophets, but your fathers put them to death.

⁴⁸ So you are witnesses and give approval to the work of your fathers; for they put them to death and you make their last resting-places.

⁴⁹ For this reason the wisdom of God has said, I will send them prophets and teachers, and to some of them they will give death and cruel pains;

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, Now do ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your inward parts are full of plunder and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Fools, has not he who has made the outside made the inside also?

⁴¹ But rather give alms of what ye have, and behold, all things are clean to you.

⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, and pass by the judgment and the love of God: these ye ought to have done, and not have left those aside.

⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye love the first seat in the synagogues and salutations in the market-places.

⁴⁴ Woe unto you, for ye are as the sepulchres which appear not, and the men walking over them do not know it.

⁴⁵ And one of the doctors of the law answering says to him, Teacher, in saying these things thou insultest us also.

⁴⁶ And he said, To you also woe, doctors of the law, for ye lay upon men burdens heavy to bear, and yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe unto you, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ Ye bear witness then, and consent to the works of your fathers; for they killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

⁴⁹ For this reason also the wisdom of God has said, I will send to them prophets and apostles, and of these shall they kill and drive out by persecution,

³⁹ And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity.

⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make also that which is within?

⁴¹ But yet that which remaineth, give alms; and behold, all things are clean unto you.

⁴² But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb; and pass over judgment, and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

⁴³ Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the marketplace.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not, and men that walk over are not aware.

⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also.

⁴⁶ But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear, and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchres.

⁴⁹ For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute.

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but the inside of you is full of greed and evil.

⁴⁰ Fools! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside?

⁴¹ Nevertheless give what is inside as alms; and see, all things are clean to you.

⁴² “But woe to you Pharisees! Because you pay a tithe of mint and rue and every vegetable, and you pass over justice and the love of God. These things you ought to have done, and not have neglected the others.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! Because you love the first seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you are like unmarked graves, and the men walking over them do not know it.”

⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You insult us also.”

⁴⁶ And He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well! Because you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ Consequently, you bear witness to and approve of the deeds of your fathers; because they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.

⁴⁹ For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’

³⁹ So the Lord said to him: “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but your inside is full of greed and malignancy.

⁴⁰ Fools! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside?

⁴¹ Nevertheless, give what is possible as alms; then indeed all things are clean to you.

⁴² “But woe to you Pharisees! You tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you ignore justice and the love of God. These it was necessary to do, without leaving those undone.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! You love the best seat in the synagogues, and greetings in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like unperceived graves, that people walk on without knowing it.”

⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers reacted and said to him, “Teacher, by saying these things you insult us also!”

⁴⁶ So He said: “Woe to you lawyers also! You load men down with burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! You restore the tombs of the prophets, it being your fathers who killed them.

⁴⁸ Thereby you witness to and approve of the deeds of your fathers; because they indeed killed them, while you restore their tombs.

⁴⁹ Also, because of this ‘the wisdom of God’ said: ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’

³⁹ So the Lord told him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you're full of greed and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You're so foolish! Don't you think the one who made the outside made the inside as well?

⁴¹ If, acting from within, you do acts of kindness to others, then everything will be clean to you.

⁴² Shame on you Pharisees! You pay tithe on herbs and plants, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You need to pay attention to the latter, while not leaving the former things undone.

⁴³ Shame on you Pharisees! You love to have the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect when you go to the markets.

⁴⁴ Shame on you! You are like unmarked graves that people walk over without knowing.”

⁴⁵ One of the experts in religious law reacted, saying, “Teacher, when you talk like this, you're insulting us too!”

⁴⁶ Jesus replied, “Shame on you lawyers too! You place burdens on people that are too hard to carry, but you don't lift a finger to help them.

⁴⁷ Shame on you! You build memorial tombs to honor the prophets, but it was your own fathers who killed them in the first place!

⁴⁸ By doing this you are witnesses showing that you agree with what your fathers did. They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs!

⁴⁹ This is why God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some they will kill, and others they will persecute.’

³⁹ And the Lord saide to him, In deede yee Pharises make cleane the outside of the cuppe, and of the platter: but the inwarde part is full of rauening and wickednesse.

⁴⁰ Ye fooles, did not he that made that which is without, make that which is within also?

⁴¹ Therefore, giue almes of those thinges which you haue, and beholde, all thinges shall be cleane to you.

⁴² But wo be to you, Pharises: for ye tithe the mynt and the rewe, and all maner herbs, and passe ouer iudgement and the loue of God: these ought yee to haue done, and not to haue left the other vndone.

⁴³ Wo be to you, Pharises: for ye loue the vppermost seats in the Synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

⁴⁴ Wo be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye are as graues which appeare not, and the men that walke ouer them, perceiue not.

⁴⁵ Then answered one of the Lawyers, and saide vnto him, Master, thus saying thou puttest vs to rebuke also.

⁴⁶ And he sayde, Wo be to you also, yee Lawyers: for yee lade men with burdens grieuous to be borne, and yee your selues touche not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Wo be to you: for ye builde the sepulchres of the Prophetes, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ Truely ye beare witnesse, and allowe the deedes of your fathers: for they killed them, and yee build their sepulchres.

⁴⁹ Therefore said the wisedome of God, I wil sende them Prophets and Apostles, and of them they shall slaie, and persecute away,

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the markets.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, for ye are as tombs which are unseen, and men walking over them know it not.

⁴⁵ And one of the lawyers answering saith to him, Teacher, in saying these things, thou revilest us also.

⁴⁶ And he said, To you lawyers also, woe! for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ So then ye bear witness to and approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and ye are building their tombs.

⁴⁹ Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute;

³⁹ But the Master said to him, “You Pharisees do, it is true, clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside you yourselves are filled with greed and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Fools! Did not the maker of the outside make the inside too?

⁴¹ Only give away what is in them in charity, and at once you have the whole clean.

⁴² But alas for you Pharisees! You pay tithes on mint, rue, and herbs of all kinds, and pass over justice and love to God. These last you ought to have put into practise without neglecting the first.

⁴³ Alas for you Pharisees! You delight to have the front seat in the synagogues, and to be greeted in the markets with respect.

⁴⁴ Alas for you! You are like unsuspected graves, over which men walk unawares.”

⁴⁵ Here one of the students of the Law interrupted him by saying, “Teacher, when you say this, you are insulting us also.”

⁴⁶ But Jesus went on, “Alas for you, too, you students of the Law! You load people with loads that are too heavy to carry, but do not, yourselves, touch them with one of your fingers.

⁴⁷ Alas for you! You build the monuments of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.

⁴⁸ You are actually witnesses to your ancestors' acts and show your approval of them, because, while they killed the prophets, you build tombs for them.

⁴⁹ That is why the wisdom of God said — ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles,

³⁹ But the Master said to him, “You Pharisees do, it is true, clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside you yourselves are filled with greed and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Fools! Did not the maker of the outside make the inside too?

⁴¹ Only give away what is in them in charity, and at once you have the whole clean.

⁴² But alas for you Pharisees! You pay tithes on mint, rue, and herbs of all kinds, and pass over justice and love to God. These last you ought to have put into practice without neglecting the first.

⁴³ Alas for you Pharisees! You delight to have the front seat in the synagogues, and to be greeted in the markets with respect.

⁴⁴ Alas for you! You are like unsuspected graves, over which men walk unawares.”

⁴⁵ Here one of the students of the Law interrupted him by saying, “Teacher, when you say this, you are insulting us also.”

⁴⁷ Alas for you! You build the monuments of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.

⁴⁸ You are actually witnesses to your ancestors' acts and show your approval of them, because, while they killed the prophets, you build tombs for them.

⁴⁹ That is why the wisdom of God said — ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles,

³⁹ The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees Separated cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You foolish ones, didn’t he who made the outside make the inside also?

⁴¹ But give for gifts to the needy those things which are within, and behold, all things will be clean to you.

⁴² But woe to you Pharisees Separated! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and God’s agape ·unconditional love·. You ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees Separated! For you have agapao ·totally devoted love· towards the best seats in the synagogues, and the greetings in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, Torah-Teachers and Pharisees Separated, hypocrites! For you are like hidden graves, and the men who walk over them don’t know it.”

⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying this you insult us also.”

⁴⁶ He said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load men with burdens that are difficult to carry, and you yourselves won’t even lift one finger to help carry those burdens.

⁴⁷ Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

⁴⁸ So you testify and consent to the works of your fathers. For they killed them, and you build their tombs.

⁴⁹ Therefore also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute,

³⁹ So Jesus said to him, “You Pharisee mob are like somebody that only cleans the outside of cups and plates. You only do good things if people can see you, like you are good on the outside. But you are really dirty on the inside. You are greedy, and you are always thinking in your heads about doing very bad things.

⁴⁰ Look, you are really stupid. You forget that God made the inside of you as well as the outside. He can see everything that is inside your heads.

⁴¹ The right way is like this. You have to think in your heads about poor people and you have to be sorry for them, and you have to give them the things they need. Then God will say that you are clean, on the inside as well as on the outside.

⁴² You mob follow God’s law that says you have to give him a little bit of everything you get. That little bit is one part out of every 10, and we call it a tithe. You do that for everything you get, even the little plants that grow in your garden. But you don’t do the important things that God wants everyone to do. So God will make trouble for you Pharisee mob. You see, you have to be fair to other people, and you have to love God. These are the important things that you have to do, and then you can keep on giving God a proper tithe.

⁴³ Yes, God will make trouble for you Pharisee mob. You try to get people to think you are important. Whenever you go to a meeting place you want the good seats that are for important people. And whenever you walk around the shopping places you want people to say hello to you in a good way, the way they talk to important people.

⁴⁴ So God will make trouble for you mob. You are like graves that nobody marked. People walk on that ground, but they don’t know that there is a dead body under their feet. You are like that. You get people to think you are good, and they don’t know that you are bad on the inside.”

⁴⁵ Then a Jewish law teacher said to Jesus, “Hey, Teacher, you are saying bad things about us, too.”

⁴⁶ Jesus said, “That’s right, you mob are just as bad, and God will make trouble for you law teachers too. You make a lot of hard rules, and you make people follow all those rules. You are too hard on people. It is like you are making them carry a really heavy load. But you don’t help them at all. You don’t even move one of your fingers to help them.

⁴⁷ Yes, God will make trouble for you law teacher mob. A long time ago, your grand-fathers killed the men that told everyone God’s messages, and they buried them. And now, you mob put pretty little stone buildings there to remember the place where they buried them.

⁴⁸ In that way you show that you agree with the bad things your grand-fathers did.

⁴⁹ Listen, God is wise, so he said, ‘I will pick men to tell everyone my messages, and I will pick men to be my close followers, and I will send them to the people. But the people will kill some of them, and they will hurt some of them.’

³⁹ And the Lorde sayde to him: Now do the Pharises make clene the out side of the cup and of the platter: but youre inwarde parties are full of raveninge and wickednes.

⁴⁰ Ye foles dyd not he that made that which is without: make that which is within also?

⁴¹ Neverthelesse geve almose of that ye have and beholde all is clene to you.

⁴² But wo be to you Pharises for ye tithe the mynt and rewe and all manner erbes and passe over iudgment and the love of God. These ought ye to have done and yet not to have left the other vndone.

⁴³ Wo be to you Pharises: for ye love the vppermost seates in the synagoges and gretinges in the markets.

⁴⁴ Wo be to you scribes and pharises ypocrites for ye are as graves which appere not, and the men that walke over them, are not ware of them.

⁴⁵ Then answered one of the lawears and sayd vnto him: Master thus sayinge thou puttest vs to rebuke also.

⁴⁶ Then he sayde: Wo be to you also ye lawears: for ye lade men with burthens greveous to be borne and ye youre selves touche not the packes with one of youre fyngers.

⁴⁷ Wo be to you: ye bylde the sepulchres of the Prophetes and youre fathers killed them:

⁴⁸ truly ye beare witnes that ye alowe the dedes of youre fathers for they kylled them and ye bylde their sepulchres.

⁴⁹ Therfore sayde the wisdome of God: I will send them Prophetes and Apostles and of them they shall slee and persecute:

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of cups and bowls, but the inside of you is filled with greed and evil.

⁴⁰ You senseless men! Did not the one who made the outside also make the inside?

⁴¹ Give to the poor what is inside, and then all things will be clean for you.

⁴² But woe to you Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every other garden herb, but you neglect justice and the love of God. It is necessary to act justly and love God, without failing to do the other things also.

⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees, for you love the front seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.

⁴⁴ Woe to you, for you are like unmarked graves that people walk over without knowing it.”

⁴⁵ One of the teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, what you say insults us too.”

⁴⁶ Jesus said, “Woe to you, teachers of the law! For you put people under burdens that are hard to carry, but you do not touch the burdens with one of your own fingers.

⁴⁷ Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.

⁴⁶ And he said, Woe to you also, ye lawyers, for ye load men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

⁴⁸ Truly ye bear testimony, that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchers.

⁴⁵ But one of the wise men of the law answered, and said to him, Master, thou saying these things, also to us doest despite or doest despite also to us.

⁴⁶ And he said, Also woe to you, wise men of the law, for ye charge men with burdens which they may not bear, and ye yourselves with your one finger touch not the heavinesses.

⁴⁷ Woe to you, that build tombs or the burials of prophets; and your fathers slew them.

⁴⁸ Truly ye witness, that ye consent to the works of your fathers; for they slew them, but ye build their sepulchres.

⁴⁶ And he said, Also woe to you, wise men of the law, for ye charge men with burdens which they may not bear, and ye yourselves with your one finger touch not the heavinesses. (And he said, And woe to you, men wise in the Law, for ye load men with burdens which they cannot bear, but ye yourselves touch not the heavinesses with even one finger.)

⁴⁷ Woe to you, that build (the) tombs or the burials of (the) prophets; and your fathers slew them.

³⁹ And the Lord seide to hym, Now ye Farisees clensen that that is with outenforth of the cuppe and the plater; but that thing that is with ynne of you, is ful of raueyn and wickidnesse.

⁴⁰ Foolis, whether he that made that that is withoutenforth, made not also that that is with ynne?

⁴¹ Netheles that that is ouer plus, yyue ye almes, and lo! alle thingis ben cleene to you.

⁴² But wo to you, Farisees, that tithen mynte, and rue, and ech eerbe, and leeuen doom and the charite of God. For it bihofte to do these thingis, and not leeue tho.

⁴³ Wo to you, Farisees, that louen the firste chaieris in synagogis, and salutaciouns in chepyng.

⁴⁴ Wo to you, that ben as sepulcris, that ben not seyn, and men walkynge aboue witen not.

⁴⁵ But oon of the wise men of the lawe answeride, and seide to hym, Maystir, thou seiynge these thingis, also to vs doist dispit.

⁴⁶ And he seide, Also wo to you, wise men of lawe, for ye chargen men with birthuns which thei moun not bere, and ye you silf with youre o fyngur touchen not the heuynessis.

⁴⁷ Wo to you, that bilden toumbis of profetis; and youre fadris slowen hem.

⁴⁸ Treuli ye witnessen, that ye consenten to the werkis of youre fadris; for thei slowen hem, but ye bilden her sepulcris.

⁴⁶ and he said, 'And to you, the lawyers, woe! because ye burden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves with one of your fingers do not touch the burdens.
