Luke 11:11-40 in English

¹¹ And of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent?

¹² Or if he shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion?

¹³ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

¹⁴ And he was casting out a demon that was dumb. And it came to pass, when the demon was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marvelled.

¹⁵ But some of them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the demons casteth he out demons.

¹⁶ And others, trying him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

¹⁷ But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

¹⁸ And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out demons by Beelzebub.

¹⁹ And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

²⁰ But if I by the finger of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.

²¹ When the strong man fully armed guardeth his own court, his goods are in peace:

²² but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him his whole armor wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

²³ He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

²⁴ The unclean spirit when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and finding none, he saith, I will turn back unto my house whence I came out.

²⁵ And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.

²⁶ Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more evil than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck.

²⁸ But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

²⁹ And when the multitudes were gathering together unto him, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation: it seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah.

³⁰ For even as Jonah became a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

³¹ The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

³² The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.

³³ No man, when he hath lighted a lamp, putteth it in a cellar, neither under the bushel, but on the stand, that they which enter in may see the light.

³⁴ The lamp of thy body is thine eye: when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when it is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

³⁵ Look therefore whether the light that is in thee be not darkness.

³⁶ If therefore thy whole body be full of light, having no part dark, it shall be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining doth give thee light.

³⁷ Now as he spake, a Pharisee asketh him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first bathed himself before dinner.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now ye the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also?

¹¹ If one of you had a son who asked you (sg) for a fish to eat, ◄you (sg) certainly would not give him a poisonous snake instead!/would you give him a poisonous snake instead?► RHQ

¹² If he asked you for an egg, ◄you (sg) certainly would not give him a scorpion!/would you give him a scorpion?► RHQ

¹³ Even though you people are evil, you know how to give good things to your children. So your Father in heaven will certainly give good things to those who ask him, including giving the Holy Spirit, who is the best gift.”

¹⁴ One day there was a man there who, because a demon controlled him MTY, was unable to speak. After Jesus expelled the demon, the man began to talk. Most of the people there were amazed.

¹⁵ But some of them said, “It is Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons, who enables this man to expel demons!”

¹⁶ Other people there asked Jesus to perform a miracle to prove ◄he was the Messiah/that he had come from God► MTY/EUP. They wanted to trap him into not being able to perform a miracle or into doing something ridiculous.

¹⁷ But Jesus knew what they were thinking. So he said to them, “If the people in one nation fight against each other, their nation will be destroyed { they will destroy their nation}. If the people in MTY one house are divided, they will cease to remain as one family.

¹⁸ Similarly, if Satan and his demons were fighting against each other, ◄his rule over them would certainly not last!/how would his rule over them last?► RHQ I say this because you are saying that I am expelling demons by the power of the ruler of his own demons

¹⁹ Furthermore, if it is true that Satan enables me to expel demons, is it also true that your disciples who expel demons do so by Satan's power RHQ? No, that is not true. So they will show that you are not thinking logically.

²⁰ But because it is by the power MTY of God that I expel demons, I am showing you that the power of God to MET rule people's lives has come to you.”

²¹ Then, to show that by expelling evil spirits he was making it clear that he was much more powerful than Satan, Jesus said MET, “When a strong man who has many weapons guards his own house, no one can steal the things in his house.

²² But when someone else who is stronger attacks that man and subdues him, he is able to take away the weapons in which the man trusted. Then he can take from that man's house anything he wants to.

²³ No one can be neutral. Those who do not help me are opposing me, and those who do not gather people to become my disciples are causing those people to go away from me.”

²⁴ Then Jesus said this: “ Sometimes when an evil spirit leaves someone, it wanders around in desolate areas seeking someone in whom it can rest. If it does not find anyone, it says to itself, ‘I will return to the person in whom I used to live!’

²⁵ So it goes back and finds that the Spirit of God is not in control of that person's life. The person's life is like a house that has been {that someone has} swept clean and everything put {put everything} in order, but a house that is empty.

²⁶ Then this evil spirit goes and gets seven other spirits that are even more evil than it is. They all enter that person and begin living there. So, although that person's condition was bad before, it became much worse.”

²⁷ When Jesus said that, a woman who was listening called out to him, “ God is pleased with the woman who gave birth to you (sg) and let you nurse at her breasts!”

²⁸ But he replied, “God is much more pleased with those who hear his message and obey it!”

²⁹ When the group of people around Jesus got larger, he said, “ Many of you people who have been observing my ministry are evil. You want me to perform a miracle to prove that I have come from God, but the only miracle that I will perform for you is one like happened to Jonah.

³⁰ After Jonah was inside a huge fish for three days, God performed a miracle to restore Jonah . Jonah then went and testified about that to the people in Nineveh city. God will perform a similar miracle for me, the one who came from heaven. When you people have seen that miracle, you will believe my message.

³¹ Long ago the queen from Sheba, far south of Israel, traveled a long distance to hear Solomon speak many wise things. But now I, a man who is much greater and wiser than Solomon, am here, but you have not listened to what I have told you. Therefore, at the time when God judges all people, the queen from Sheba will stand there, along with you people, and will condemn you.

³² The people who lived in Nineveh city turned from their sinful ways when Jonah preached to them. But now I, who am greater than Jonah, have come and preached to you, but you have not turned from your sinful ways. Therefore, at the time when God judges all people, the people who lived in Nineveh will stand there with you and condemn you.”

³³ Then, to show them that they did not need more miracles, but that they needed only to understand better what he had already told them, he said to them MET, “People who light a lamp do not then hide it, or put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on a lampstand so that those who enter their house can see things from its light. Similarly, I have not concealed God's truth. I have revealed it to you.

³⁴ Your eyes MET are like a lamp for your body, because they enable you to see things. If your eyes are healthy, you are able to see everything well MET. Similarly, if you(sg) accept my teaching, you will be able to know all that God wants you to know. But if your eyes are bad, you are not able to see anything. It is like being in darkness MET. And similarly, if you(pl) do not accept what I teach, you will not be able to know all the things that God wants you to know.

³⁵ Therefore, you(pl) do not need to see more miracles. You need to think carefully about what I have already told you, so that the things that you have heard from others do not cause you to remain in spiritual darkness MET.

³⁶ If you live completely according to God's truth, you will be able to know everything that God wants you to know. It will be like being in a room with a lamp shining brightly, enabling you to see everything clearly.”

³⁷ While Jesus finished saying those things, a Pharisee invited him to eat a meal with him. So Jesus went to his house and ate with him.

³⁸ The Pharisee was surprised when he saw that Jesus did not follow the Pharisees' ritual by washing his hands before eating. The Pharisees washed their hands in a certain way to be cleansed from anything that might have contaminated them. They were afraid that God might reject them if they had touched something unacceptable to God.

³⁹ The Lord Jesus said to Him, “You Pharisees are concerned about things that are outside your bodies, not with what is in your ◄ inner beings/hearts► MET. You wash the outside of cups and dishes before you eat because you think that doing that will make you acceptable to God, but within yourselves you are very greedy and wicked.

⁴⁰ You foolish people! God is concerned about things that are outside our bodies, but ◄he is certainly also concerned about our inner beings!/isn't he also concerned about our hearts?► RHQ

³³ “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, that those who come in may see the light.

³⁴ The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness.

³⁵ Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn’t darkness.

³⁶ If therefore your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining gives you light.”

³⁷ Now as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him. He went in and sat at the table.

³⁸ When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed himself before dinner.

³⁹ The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You foolish ones, didn’t he who made the outside make the inside also?

¹¹ “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he won’t give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?

¹² Or if he asks for an egg, he won’t give him a scorpion, will he?

¹³ If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

¹⁴ He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the multitudes marvelled.

¹⁵ But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons.”

¹⁶ Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

¹⁷ But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. A house divided against itself falls.

¹⁸ If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

¹⁹ But if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

²⁰ But if I by God’s finger cast out demons, then God’s Kingdom has come to you.

²¹ “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.

²² But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armour in which he trusted, and divides his plunder.

²³ “He who is not with me is against me. He who doesn’t gather with me scatters.

²⁴ The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will turn back to my house from which I came out.’

²⁵ When he returns, he finds it swept and put in order.

²⁷ It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!”

²⁸ But he said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it.”

²⁹ When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.

¹⁸ If, then, Satan is at war with himself, how will he keep his kingdom? because you say that I send evil spirits out of men by the help of Beelzebul.

¹⁹ And if I, by Beelzebul, send out evil spirits, by whose help do your sons send them out? so let them be your judges.

²⁰ But if I, by the finger of God, send out evil spirits, then the kingdom of God has overtaken you.

²² But when one who is stronger makes an attack on him and overcomes him, he takes away his instruments of war, in which he had put his faith, and makes division of his goods.

²³ He who is not with me is against me, and he who will not give me help in getting people together is driving them away.

²⁴ The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of a man, goes through dry places, looking for rest; and when he does not get it, he says, I will go back to my house from which I came.

²⁵ And when he comes, he sees that it has been made fair and clean.

²⁶ Then he goes and gets seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they go in, and take their places there: and the last condition of that man is worse than the first.

²⁷ And it came about that when he said these things, a certain woman among the people said in a loud voice, Happy is the body which gave you birth, and the breasts from which you took milk.

²⁸ But he said, More happy are they who give hearing to the word of God and keep it.

²⁹ And when a great number of people came together to him, he said, This generation is an evil generation: it is looking for a sign and no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah.

³³ No man, when the light has been lighted, puts it in a secret place, or under a vessel, but on its table, so that those who come in may see the light.

³⁴ The light of the body is the eye: when your eye is true, all your body is full of light; but when it is evil, your body is dark.

³⁵ So take care that the light which is in you is not dark.

³⁶ If, then, all your body is light, with no part of it dark, it will be completely full of light, as when a flame with its bright shining gives you light.

³⁷ Now, while he was talking, a Pharisee made a request that he would come to a meal with him; and he went in and took his seat at the meal.

³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised because he came to the meal without first washing himself.

³⁹ And the Lord said to him, You Pharisees make the outside of the cup and the plate clean; but inside you are thieves and full of evil.

⁴⁰ O you foolish ones! did not he who made the outside in the same way make the inside?

¹¹ But of whom of you that is a father shall a son ask bread, and the father shall give him a stone? or also a fish, and instead of a fish shall give him a serpent?

¹² or if also he shall ask an egg, shall give him a scorpion?

¹³ If therefore ye, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much rather shall the Father who is of heaven give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

³⁵ Take heed therefore, that the light which is in thee, be not darkness.

³⁶ If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness; the whole shall be lightsome; and as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee.

³⁷ And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him, that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat.

³⁸ And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner.

³⁹ And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity.

⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without, make also that which is within?

¹¹ And which father among you, if his son asks for bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?

¹² Or if he asks for an egg, will he give him a scorpion?

¹³ If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, by how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

²⁹ Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say: “This is a malignant generation. It keeps wanting a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

³⁰ Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of the Man be to this generation.

³⁴ The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, whenever your ‘eye’ is good, your whole body is illuminated. But when it is malignant, your body also is darkened.

³⁵ So see to it that the ‘light’ in you not be darkness.

³⁶ If then your whole body is full of light, not having any part dark, the whole will be illuminated, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

³⁷ Now as He spoke, a certain Pharisee invited Him to eat with him. So He went in and reclined.

³⁸ But the Pharisee, noticing that He did not first wash before the meal, was critical.

³⁹ So the Lord said to him: “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but your inside is full of greed and malignancy.

⁴⁰ Fools! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside?

¹¹ Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, would give him a snake instead?

¹² Or if he asks for an egg, would you give him a scorpion?

¹³ So if you, even though you are evil, still know to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

¹⁴ Jesus was driving out a demon that had made a man dumb. When the demon had left, the man who was dumb spoke, and the crowds were amazed.

¹⁵ But some of them said, “He is driving out demons using the power of Beelzebub, the ruler of demons.”

¹⁶ Others were trying to test Jesus by demanding a miraculous sign from heaven.

¹⁷ Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Any kingdom divided against itself will be destroyed. A family divided against itself will fall.

¹⁸ If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? You say that I cast out demons using the power of Beelzebub.

¹⁹ But if I drive out demons by the power of Beelzebub, by whose power do your own people drive them out? They themselves will condemn you as wrong!

²⁰ However, if I am driving out demons by the power of God, then this proves God's kingdom has arrived. It's right here among you!

²¹ When a strong man who is fully armed guards his house, all he owns is safe.

²² But if a stronger man comes and defeats him, taking from him all his weapons that he depended on, then he can carry off all his possessions.

²³ Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who doesn't build together with me is breaking it all apart.

²⁴ When an evil spirit leaves someone, it goes through the desert looking for a place to stay. When it doesn't find anywhere, it says, ‘I'll return to the house I left.’

²⁵ When it returns, it finds its old home is swept and tidy.

²⁶ So it goes and finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there. In the end that man is worse off than before.”

²⁷ As he was speaking, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the womb from where you came and the breasts that nursed you.”

²⁸ But Jesus said, “Even more blessed are those who hear God's word, and follow what it says.”

²⁹ As people crowded around him, Jesus began telling them, “This is an evil generation for it's looking for some miraculous sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

³⁰ In the same way that Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of man be a sign to this generation.

³¹ The queen of the south will rise in the judgment together with the people of this generation and will condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear Solomon's wisdom, and now there is someone greater than Solomon here!

³³ No one lights a lamp and then hides it or places it under a bowl. No, you put it on a lamp stand so that those who come into the house can see the light.

³⁴ Your eye is the light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body is in the dark.

³⁵ So make sure the light you have in you is not actually darkness.

³⁶ If your whole body is full of light, with no areas of darkness, then it will be completely illuminated, just as a bright lamp gives you light.”

³⁷ After Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to come and eat with him. So Jesus went and sat down to a meal.

³⁸ The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus didn't wash his hands before eating as ceremonially required.

³⁹ So the Lord told him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you're full of greed and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You're so foolish! Don't you think the one who made the outside made the inside as well?

¹¹ If a sonne shall aske bread of any of you that is a father, will he giue him a stone? or if hee aske a fish, will he for a fish giue him a serpent?

¹² Or if hee aske an egge, will hee giue him a scorpion?

¹³ If yee then which are euill, can giue good giftes vnto your children, howe much more shall your heauenly Father giue the holy Ghost to them, that desire him?

¹⁴ Then hee cast out a deuill which was domme: and when the deuill was gone out, the domme spake, and the people wondered.

¹⁵ But some of them said, He casteth out deuils through Beelzebub the chiefe of ye deuils.

¹⁶ And others tempted him, seeking of him a signe from heauen.

¹⁷ But he knew their thoughts, and said vnto them, Euery kingdom deuided against it self, shall be desolate, and an house deuided against an house, falleth.

¹⁸ So if Satan also bee deuided against himselfe, howe shall his kingdome stande, because yee say that I cast out deuils through Beelzebub?

¹⁹ If I through Beelzebub cast out deuils, by whome doe your children cast them out? Therefore shall they be your iudges.

²⁰ But if I by ye finger of God cast out deuils, doutles the kingdome of God is come vnto you.

²¹ When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, the thinges that hee possesseth, are in peace.

²² But when a stronger then hee, commeth vpon him, and ouercommeth him: hee taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and deuideth his spoiles.

²³ He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.

²⁴ When the vncleane spirite is gone out of a man, he walketh through drie places, seeking rest: and when he findeth none he saieth, I wil returne vnto mine house whence I came out.

²⁵ And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

²⁶ Then goeth hee, and taketh to him seuen other spirites worse then himselfe: and they enter in, and dwel there: so the last state of that man is worse then the first.

²⁷ And it came to passe as he sayde these thinges, a certaine woman of the companie lifted vp her voyce, and sayde vnto him, Blessed is the wombe that bare thee, and the pappes which thou hast sucked.

²⁸ But hee saide, Yea, rather blessed are they that heare the woorde of God, and keepe it.

²⁹ And when the people were gathered thicke together, he began to say, This is a wicked generation: they seeke a signe, and there shall no signe be giuen them, but the signe of Ionas the Prophet.

³⁰ For as Ionas was a signe to the Niniuites: so shall also the Sonne of man bee to this generation.

³¹ The Queene of the South shall rise in iudgement, with the men of this generation, and shall condemne them: for shee came from the vtmost partes of the earth to heare the wisedome of Salomon, and beholde, a greater then Salomon is here.

³² The men of Niniue shall rise in iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it: for they repented at the preaching of Ionas: and beholde, a greater then Ionas is here.

³³ No man when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a priuie place, neither vnder a bushell: but on a candlesticke, that they which come in, may see the light.

³⁴ The light of the bodie is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, then is thy whole bodie light: but if thine eye be euill, then thy bodie is darke.

³⁵ Take heede therefore, that the light which is in thee, be not darkenesse.

³⁶ If therefore thy whole body shall be light, hauing no part darke, then shall all be light, euen as when a candle doth light thee with the brightnesse.

³⁷ And as hee spake, a certaine Pharise besought him to dine with him: and hee went in, and sate downe at table.

³⁸ And when the Pharise saw it, he marueiled that he had not first washed before dinner.

³⁹ And the Lord saide to him, In deede yee Pharises make cleane the outside of the cuppe, and of the platter: but the inwarde part is full of rauening and wickednesse.

⁴⁰ Ye fooles, did not he that made that which is without, make that which is within also?

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inside is full of rapacity and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Fools, did not he who made the outside, make the inside also?

¹¹ What father amongst you, if his son asks him for a fish, will give him a snake instead,

¹² or, if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

¹³ If you, then, naturally wicked though you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

¹⁴ Once Jesus was driving out a dumb demon, and, when the demon had gone out, the dumb man spoke. The people were amazed at this;

¹⁵ but some of them said, “He drives out demons by the help of Beelzebul, the chief of the demons”;

¹⁶ while others, to test him, asked him for some sign from the heavens.

¹⁷ Jesus himself, however, was aware of what they were thinking, and said to them, “Any kingdom wholly divided against itself becomes a desolation; and a divided house falls.

¹⁸ So, too, if Satan is wholly divided against himself, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I drive out demons by the help of Beelzebul.

¹⁹ But, if it is by Beelzebul's help that I drive out demons, by whose help is it that your own sons drive them out? Therefore they will themselves be your judges.

²⁴ No sooner does a foul spirit leave someone, than it passes through places where there is no water, in search of rest; and finding none, it says ‘I will go back to the home which I left’;

²⁵ but, on coming there, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order.

²⁶ Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in, and make their home there; and the last state of that person proves to be worse than the first.”

²⁷ As Jesus was saying this, a woman in the crowd, raising her voice, exclaimed, “Happy was the mother who bore you and nursed you!”

²⁸ But Jesus replied, “Rather, happy are those who listen to God's message and keep it.”

²⁹ As the crowds increased, Jesus began to speak, “This generation is a wicked generation. It is asking a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah.

³⁰ For, as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

³¹ At the judgement the Queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation, and will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon; and here is more than a Solomon!

¹⁵ But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Ba'al-Zibbul Lord of Flies, the prince of the demons.”

¹⁶ Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

¹⁷ But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. A house divided against itself falls.

¹⁸ If Satan Adversary also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Ba'al-Zibbul Lord of Flies.

¹⁹ But if I cast out demons by Ba'al-Zibbul Lord of Flies, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore will they be your judges.

²⁰ But if I by God’s finger cast out demons, then God’s Kingdom has come to you.

²¹ “When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own dwelling, his goods are safe.

²² But when someone stronger attacks him and overcomes him, he takes from him his whole armor in which he trusted, and divides his plunder.

²³ “He that is not with me is against me. He who does not gather with me scatters.

²⁴ The unclean spirit, when he has gone out of the man, passes through dry places, seeking rest, and finding none, he says, ‘I will turn back to my house from which I came out.’

²⁵ When he teshuvah ·completely returns·, he finds it swept and put in order.

²⁶ Then he goes, and takes seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”

²⁷ It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!”

²⁸ But he said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear ha D'var Elohim · the Word of God·, and keep it.”

²⁹ When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah Dove, the prophet.

³⁰ For even as Jonah Dove became a sign to the Ninevites, so will also the Son of Man be to this generation.

³¹ The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and will condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon Peaceable, Recompense; and behold, one greater than Solomon Peaceable, Recompense is here.

³² The men of Nineveh Offspring’s Habitation will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it: for they made teshuvah ·complete repentance· at the preaching of Jonah Dove, and behold, one greater than Jonah Dove is here.

³³ “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, that those who come in may see the light.

³⁴ The lamp candle of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness.

³⁵ Therefore see whether the light that is in you is not darkness.

³⁷ Now as he spoke, a certain Pharisee Separated asked him to dine with him. He went in, and sat at the table.

³⁸ When the Pharisee Separated saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed himself before dinner.

³⁹ The Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees Separated cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness.

⁴⁰ You foolish ones, didn’t he who made the outside make the inside also?

¹¹ Some of you are fathers. If your kid asks you for a fish to eat, will you give him a cheeky snake instead? No, of course not.

¹² Or if your kid asks you for an egg, will you give him a cheeky scorpion instead? No, of course not.

¹³ You see, you might be bad, but you always give good things to your kids. Well, your Father in heaven is a lot better than you, so he is always sure to give you good things. He will send the Holy Spirit to everyone that asks him.”

³⁷ Jesus was talking to the people, and a man that belonged to the mob called Pharisees asked him to come to his place for dinner. The Pharisee mob were very strong for the Jewish law.

³⁸ The Pharisees made a rule, that whenever anyone wanted to eat a meal, they first had to wash their hands. But Jesus didn’t follow that rule. He didn’t wash his hands. The Pharisee man was shocked.

³⁹ So Jesus said to him, “You Pharisee mob are like somebody that only cleans the outside of cups and plates. You only do good things if people can see you, like you are good on the outside. But you are really dirty on the inside. You are greedy, and you are always thinking in your heads about doing very bad things.

⁴⁰ Look, you are really stupid. You forget that God made the inside of you as well as the outside. He can see everything that is inside your heads.

¹¹ Yf the sonne shall axe breed of eny of you that is a father: wyll he geve him a stone? Or yf he axe fisshe wyll he for a fysshe geve him a serpent?

¹² Or yf he axe an egge: wyll he offer him a scorpion?

³³ Noo man lighteth a candell, and putteth it in a previe place nether vnder a busshell: But on a candelsticke that they that come in maye se the light.

³⁴ The light of thy body is the eye. Therfore when thine eye is single: then is all thy body full of light. But if thine eye be evyll: then shall thy body also be full of darknes.

³⁵ Take hede therfore that the light which is in the be not darknes.

³⁶ For if all thy body shalbe light havynge noo parte darke: then shall all be full of light even as when a candell doeth light the with his brightnes.

³⁷ And as he spake a certayne Pharise besought him to dyne with him: and he went in and sate doune to meate.

³⁹ And the Lorde sayde to him: Now do the Pharises make clene the out side of the cup and of the platter: but youre inwarde parties are full of raveninge and wickednes.

¹¹ Which father among you, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?

¹² Or if he asks for an egg, will you give a scorpion to him?

¹³ Therefore, if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?”

¹⁸ If Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

¹⁹ If I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? Because of this, they will be your judges.

²⁰ But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

²¹ When a strong man who is fully armed guards his own house, his goods are safe,

²² but when a stronger man overcomes him, the stronger man takes away the armor from the man, and plunders the man's possessions.

²³ The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters.

²⁴ When an unclean spirit has gone away from a man, it passes through waterless places and looks for rest. Finding none, it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.'

²⁵ Having returned, it finds that house swept out and put in order.

²⁶ Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more evil than itself and they all come in to live there. Then the final condition of that man becomes worse than the first.”

²⁸ But he said, “Rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.”

³⁰ For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so too the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation.

³² The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation of people and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and see, someone greater than Jonah is here.

³³ No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a hidden place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.

³⁴ Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is good, the whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your body is full of darkness.

³⁵ Therefore, be careful that the light in you is not darkness.

³⁶ If then your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, then your whole body will be like when a lamp shines its brightness on you.”

⁴⁰ You senseless men! Did not the one who made the outside also make the inside?

³⁰ For as Jonah was a token to men of Nineveh, so man’s Son shall be to this generation.

³¹ The queen of the south shall rise in doom with men of this generation, and shall condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth, to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and lo! here is a greater than Solomon.

¹³ Therefore if ye, when ye be evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more your Father of heaven shall give a good Spirit to men that ask him.

¹⁴ And Jesus was casting out a fiend (or And Jesus was throwing out a demon), and it was dumb. And when he had cast out the fiend, the dumb man spake; and the people wondered.

¹⁵ And some of them said, In Beelzebub, (the) prince of devils, he casteth out devils. (And some of them said, By Beelzebub, the Prince of demons, he throweth out demons.)

¹⁶ And others tempting asked of him a token from heaven. (And others testing him, asked for a sign from heaven.)

¹⁷ And as he saw the thoughts of them, he said to them, Every realm parted against itself shall be desolate(d), (or Every kingdom divided against itself shall be destroyed unto rubble), and an house shall fall on an house.

¹⁸ And if Satan be parted against himself, how shall his realm stand? For ye say, that I cast out fiends in Beelzebub. (And if Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? For ye say, that I throw out devils and demons by Beelzebub.)

¹⁹ And if I in Beelzebub cast out fiends, in whom cast out your sons? or in whom your sons cast out? Therefore they shall be your doomsmen. (And if I throw out devils and demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons throw them out? And so they shall be your judges.)

²⁰ But if I cast out fiends in the finger of God, then the realm of God is come among you. (But if I throw out devils and demons by the finger of God, then the Kingdom of God hath come among you, or hath come unto you.)

²¹ When a strong, armed man keepeth his house, all things that he wieldeth be in peace (or everything that he possesseth be at peace).

²² But if a stronger (man) than he come upon him, and overcome him, he shall take away all his armour or all his arms in which he trusted, (or he shall take away all his weapons in which he trusted), and shall deal abroad his robberies or his spoils.

²³ He that is not with me, is against me; and he that gathereth not together with me, scattereth abroad.

²⁴ When an unclean spirit goeth out of a man, he wandereth by dry places, and seeketh rest; and he finding none, saith, I shall turn again into mine house, from whence I came out, (or and he finding no place to rest, saith, I shall return to my house, where I came from).

²⁵ And when he cometh (back), he findeth it cleansed with besoms, and fair arrayed, or adorned, (or he findeth it swept clean, and neat and tidy).

²⁶ Then he goeth, and taketh with him (or and getteth with him), seven other spirits worse than himself, and they enter in, and dwell there. And the last things of that man be made worse than the former (things), (or the first things).

²⁷ And it was done, when he had said these things, a woman of the company raised up her voice, and said to him, Blessed be the womb that bare thee, and blessed be the teats that thou hast sucked (or and blessed be the breasts that thou hast suckled).

²⁸ And he said, But yea, blessed be they, or And he said, Rather, blessed be they, that hear the word of God, and keep it, (or who hear the word of God, and obey it, or do it).

²⁹ And when the people ran together, he began to say, This generation is a wayward generation; it seeketh a token (or a sign), and a token shall not be given to it, no but the token of Jonas the prophet (or except the sign of the prophet Jonah).

³⁰ For as Jonas was a token to men of Nineve (or For as Jonah was a sign to the men of Nineveh), so man’s Son shall be to this generation.

³¹ The queen of the south shall rise in (the) doom with men of this generation, and shall condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth, to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and lo! here is a greater (man) than Solomon. (The Queen of the South shall rise at the Judgement with men of this generation, and shall condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth, to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold! here is something or someone greater than Solomon.)

³² Men of Nineve shall rise in the doom with this generation, and shall condemn it; for they did penance in the preaching of Jonas or for they did penance at the preaching of Jonas, and lo! here is a greater (man) than Jonas. (Men of Nineveh shall rise at the Judgement with this generation, and shall condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold! here is something or someone greater than Jonah.)

³³ No man tendeth, or lighteneth, (or lighteth), a lantern, and putteth it in huddles (or hideth it), neither under a bushel, but (rather) on a candlestick, (so) that they that go in(side), see light.

³⁴ The lantern of thy body is thine eye; if thine eye be simple, (or if thine eye is single, or is sound), all thy body shall be light-full; but if it be wayward, all thy body shall be dark-full.

³⁵ Therefore see thou, lest the light that is in thee, be darknesses (or be darkness).

³⁶ Therefore if all thy body be bright, and have no part of darknesses, (or And so if all thy body be bright, and have no part with darkness), it shall be all bright, and as a lantern of brightness it shall give light to thee. Therefore if all thy body shall be light-full, not having any part of darknesses, it shall be all light-full, and as a lantern of brightness, or shining, it shall give light to thee.

³⁷ And when he spake, a Pharisee prayed him, that he should eat with him. And he entered, and sat to (the) meat or (and) sat at the meat. (And after he spoke, a Pharisee beseeched him, that he would eat with him. And he entered, and sat down for the meal.)

³⁸ And the Pharisee began to say, guessing within himself, why he was not washed before the meat (or why he did not wash before the meal).

³⁹ And the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse that that is withoutforth of the cup and the platter; but that thing that is within of you or but that thing of you that is within, is full of raven and wickedness.

⁴⁰ Fools, whether he that made that that is withoutforth, made not also that that is within?

¹¹ Therfor who of you axith his fadir breed, whether he schal yyue hym a stoon? or if he axith fisch, whether he schal yyue hym a serpent for the fisch?

¹² or if he axe an eye, whether he schal a reche hym a scorpioun?

¹³ Therfor if ye, whanne ye ben yuel, kunnen yyue good yiftis to youre children, hou myche more youre fadir of heuene schal yyue a good spirit to men that axith him.

¹⁴ And Jhesus was castynge out a feend, and he was doumbe. And whanne he hadde cast out the feend, the doumbe man spak; and the puple wondride.

¹⁵ And sum of hem seiden, In Belsabub, prince of deuelis, he castith out deuelis.

¹⁶ And othir temptinge axiden of hym a tokene fro heuene.

¹⁷ And as he saiy the thouytis of hem, he seide to hem, Euery rewme departid ayens it silf, schal be desolat, and an hous schal falle on an hous.

¹⁸ And if Sathanas be departid ayens hym silf, hou schal his rewme stonde? For ye seien, that Y caste out feendis in Belsabub.

¹⁹ And if Y in Belsabub caste out fendis, in whom casten out youre sones? Therfor thei schulen be youre domesmen.

²⁰ But if Y caste out fendis in the fyngir of God, thanne the rewme of God is comun among you.

²¹ Whanne a strong armed man kepith his hous, alle thingis that he weldith ben in pees.

²² But if a stronger than he come vpon hym, and ouercome hym, he schal take awei al his armere, in which he tristide, and schal dele abrood his robries.

²⁶ Thanne he goith, and takith with hym seuene othere spirits worse than hym silf, and thei entren, and dwellen there. And the laste thingis of that man ben maad worse than the formere.

²⁷ And it was don, whanne he hadde seid these thingis, a womman of the cumpanye reride hir vois, and seide to hym, Blessid be the wombe that bare thee, and blessid be the tetis that thou hast soken.

²⁸ And he seide, But yhe blessid be thei, that heren the word of God, and kepen it.

²⁹ And whanne the puple runnen togidere, he bigan to seie, This generacioun is a weiward generacioun; it sekith a token, and a tokene schal not be youun to it, but the tokene of Jonas, the profete.

³⁰ For as Jonas was a tokene to men of Nynyue, so mannus sone schal be to this generacioun.

³¹ The queen of the south schal rise in doom with men of this generacioun, and schal condempne hem; for sche cam fro the endis of the erthe, for to here the wisdom of Salomon, and lo! here is a gretter than Salomon.

³² Men of Nynyue schulen rise in doom with this generacioun, and schulen condempne it; for thei diden penaunce in the prechyng of Jonas, and lo! here is a gretter than Jonas.

³³ No man tendith a lanterne, and puttith in hidils, nether vndur a buyschel, but on a candilstike, that thei that goen in, se liyt.

³⁴ The lanterne of thi bodi is thin iye; if thin iye be symple, al thi bodi schal be liyti; but if it be weyward, al thi bodi schal be derkful.

³⁵ Therfor se thou, lest the liyt that is in thee, be derknessis.

³⁶ Therfor if al thi bodi be briyt, and haue no part of derknessis, it schal be al briyt, and as a lanterne of briytnesse it schal yyue liyt to thee.

³⁷ And whanne he spak, a Farisee preiede him, that he schulde ete with hym. And he entride, and sat to the meete.

³⁸ And the Farisee bigan to seie, gessynge with ynne hym silf, whi he was not waschen bifor mete.

³⁹ And the Lord seide to hym, Now ye Farisees clensen that that is with outenforth of the cuppe and the plater; but that thing that is with ynne of you, is ful of raueyn and wickidnesse.

⁴⁰ Foolis, whether he that made that that is withoutenforth, made not also that that is with ynne?

¹¹ 'And of which of you — the father — if the son shall ask a loaf, a stone will he present to him? and if a fish, will he instead of a fish, a serpent present to him?

¹² and if he may ask an egg, will he present to him a scorpion?

¹³ If, then, ye, being evil, have known good gifts to be giving to your children, how much more shall the Father who is from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those asking Him!'

¹⁴ And he was casting forth a demon, and it was dumb, and it came to pass, the demon having gone forth, the dumb man spake, and the multitudes wondered,

¹⁵ and certain of them said, 'By Beelzeboul, ruler of the demons, he doth cast forth the demons;'

¹⁶ and others, tempting, a sign out of heaven from him were asking.

¹⁷ And he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, 'Every kingdom having been divided against itself is desolated; and house against house doth fall;

¹⁸ and if also the Adversary against himself was divided, how shall his kingdom be made to stand? for ye say, by Beelzeboul is my casting forth the demons.

¹⁹ 'But if I by Beelzeboul cast forth the demons — your sons, by whom do they cast forth? because of this your judges they shall be;

²⁰ but if by the finger of God I cast forth the demons, then come unawares upon you did the reign of God.

²¹ 'When the strong man armed may keep his hall, in peace are his goods;

²² but when the stronger than he, having come upon him, may overcome him, his whole-armour he doth take away in which he had trusted, and his spoils he distributeth;

²³ he who is not with me is against me, and he who is not gathering with me doth scatter.

²⁴ 'When the unclean spirit may go forth from the man it walketh through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding, it saith, I will turn back to my house whence I came forth;

²⁵ and having come, it findeth it swept and adorned;

²⁶ then doth it go, and take to it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and having entered, they dwell there, and the last of that man becometh worst than the first.'

²⁷ And it came to pass, in his saying these things, a certain woman having lifted up the voice out of the multitude, said to him, 'Happy the womb that carried thee, and the paps that thou didst suck!'

²⁸ And he said, 'Yea, rather, happy those hearing the word of God, and keeping it!'

²⁹ And the multitudes crowding together upon him, he began to say, 'This generation is evil, a sign it doth seek after, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet,

³⁰ for as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also shall the Son of Man be to this generation.

³¹ 'A queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and lo, greater than Solomon here!

³² 'Men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it, because they reformed at the proclamation of Jonah; and lo, greater than Jonah here!

³³ 'And no one having lighted a lamp, doth put it in a secret place, nor under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, that those coming in may behold the light.

³⁴ 'The lamp of the body is the eye, when then thine eye may be simple, thy whole body also is lightened; and when it may be evil, thy body also is darkened;

³⁵ take heed, then, lest the light that is in thee be darkness;

³⁶ if then thy whole body is lightened, not having any part darkened, the whole shall be lightened, as when the lamp by the brightness may give thee light.'

³⁷ And in his speaking, a certain Pharisee was asking him that he might dine with him, and having gone in, he reclined (at meat),

³⁸ and the Pharisee having seen, did wonder that he did not first baptize himself before the dinner.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, 'Now do ye, the Pharisees, the outside of the cup and of the plate make clean, but your inward part is full of rapine and wickedness;

⁴⁰ unthinking! did not He who made the outside also the inside make?
