⁴⁰ As a hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee; he shall serve with thee unto the year of jubilee:

⁴¹ then shall he go out from thee, he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.

⁴² For they are my servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.

⁴³ Thou shalt not rule over him with rigor, but shalt fear thy God.

⁴⁴ And as for thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, whom thou shalt have; of the nations that are round about you, of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.

⁴⁵ Moreover of the children of the strangers that sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they have begotten in your land: and they shall be your possession.

⁴⁰ He shall be with thee as a hireling or a sojourner, he shall work for thee till the year of release:

⁴¹ and he shall go out in the release, and his children with him; and he shall go to his family, he shall hasten back to his patrimony.

⁴² Because these are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; such an one shall not be sold as a common servant.

⁴³ Thou shalt not oppress him with labour, and shalt fear the Lord thy God.

⁴⁴ And whatever number of men-servants and maid-servants thou shalt have, thou shalt purchase male and female servants from the nations that are round about thee.

⁴⁵ And of the sons of the sojourners that are among you, of these ye shall buy and of their relations, all that shall be in your lands; let them be to you for a possession.

⁴⁰ But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:

⁴⁰ Treat him like you treat workers that you hire or like someone who is living on your land temporarily. But he must work for you only until the Year of Celebration.

⁴¹ During that year, you must free him, and he will go back to his family and to the property that his ancestors owned.

⁴² It is as though you Israelis are my slaves/servants, whom I freed from being slaves in Egypt. So none of you should be sold to become slaves.

⁴³ And do not treat the Israelis whom you buy cruelly; instead, revere me, your God.

⁴⁴ If you want to have slaves, you are permitted to buy them from nearby countries.

⁴⁵ You are also permitted to buy some of the foreigners who are living among you, and members of their clans that were born in your country. Then you will own them.

⁴⁰ He shall be with you as a hireling or a sojourner, he shall work for you till the year of release:

⁴¹ Then he will go out from you, he and his children with him, and go back to his family and to the property of his fathers.

⁴² For they are my servants whom I took out from the land of Egypt; they may not become the property of another.

⁴³ Do not be a hard master to him, but have the fear of God before you.

⁴⁴ But you may get servants as property from among the nations round about; from them you may take men-servants and women-servants.

⁴⁵ And in addition, you may get, for money, servants from among the children of other nations who are living with you, and from their families which have come to birth in your land; and these will be your property.

⁴⁰ as a hired servant, as a sojourner, shall he be with thee; until the year of jubilee shall he serve thee.

⁴¹ Then shall he depart from thee, he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.

⁴² For they are my bondmen, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as men sell bondmen.

⁴³ Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; and thou shalt fear thy God.

⁴⁴ And as for thy bondman and thy handmaid whom thou shalt have — of the nations that are round about you, of them shall ye buy bondmen and handmaids.

⁴⁵ Moreover of the children of them that dwell as sojourners with you, of them may ye buy, and of their family that is with you, which they beget in your land, and they shall be your possession.

⁴⁰ But he shall be as a hireling, and a sojourner: he shall work with thee until the year of the jubilee,

⁴¹ And afterwards he shall go out with his children, and shall return to his kindred and to the possession of his fathers,

⁴² For they are my servants, and I brought them out of the land of Egypt: let them not be sold as bondmen:

⁴³ Afflict him not by might, but fear thy God.

⁴⁴ Let your bondmen, and your bondwomen, be of the nations that are round about you.

⁴⁵ And of the strangers that sojourn among you, or that were born of them in your land, these you shall have for servants:

⁴⁰ Have them live with you like a paid worker who is staying with you for a while. They are to work for you until the Jubilee Year.

⁴¹ Then they and their children must be freed, and they can go back to their family and to their family's property.

⁴² Israelites are not to be sold as slaves because they belong to me as my slaves—I led them out of Egypt.

⁴³ Don't treat them with brutality. Have respect for your God.

⁴⁴ Buy your male and female slaves from the surrounding nations.

⁴⁵ You can also buy them from foreigners who have come to live among you, or from their descendants born in your land. You can treat them as your property.

⁴⁰ But as an hired seruant, and as a soiourner he shalbe with thee: he shall serue thee vnto the yeere of the Iubile.

⁴¹ Then shall he depart from thee, both hee, and his children with him, and shall returne vnto his familie, and vnto the possession of his fathers shall he returne:

⁴² For they are my seruants, whom I brought out of the lande of Egypt: they shall not be solde as bondmen are solde.

⁴³ Thou shalt not rule ouer him cruelly, but shalt feare thy God.

⁴⁴ Thy bond seruant also, and thy bond maid, which thou shalt haue, shalbe of the heathen that are rounde about you: of them shall ye bye seruants and maydes.

⁴⁵ And moreouer of the children of the stragers, that are soiourners among you, of them shall ye bye, and of their families that are with you, which they begate in your lande: these shall be your possession.

⁴⁰ As a hired servant, and as a settler, he shall be with thee; he shall serve with thee unto the year of jubilee.

⁴¹ Then shall he go out from thee, he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.

⁴² For they are My servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as bondmen.

⁴³ Thou shalt not make him serve with rigour, but shalt fear thy God.

⁴⁴ Thy bondmen and thy handmaids thou shalt have from the Gentiles who are about thee; from them thou mayest obtain bondmen and handmaids.

⁴⁵ And also from the sons of the uncircumcised strangers who sojourn with you, of them and of their children who are with you which are born in the land, you may obtain a possession,

⁴⁰ As a hired servant, and as a temporary resident, he shall be with you; he shall serve with you until the Jubilee Year ·Shofar Year·:

⁴¹ then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and shall teshuvah ·completely return· to his own family, and to the possession of his fathers.

⁴² For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt Abode of slavery. They shall not be sold as slaves.

⁴³ You shall not rule over him with harshness, but shall fear your God.

⁴⁴ “‘As for your male and your female slaves, whom you may have; of the nations that are around you, from them you may buy male and female slaves.

⁴⁵ Moreover of the children of the aliens who live among you, of them you may buy, and of their families who are with you, which they have conceived in your land; and they will be your property.

⁴⁴ A servant and handmaid be to you of the nations that be in your compass, and of the comelings the which be pilgrims with you,

⁴⁵ either they that be born of comelings in your land; ye shall have these servants, and by right of heritage ye shall leave them to your after-comers, and ye shall wield them without end;

⁴⁰ but he shall be as an hired man and (as) a tenant; till to the year of jubilee he shall work with thee (or he shall work for thee until the Jubilee Year),

⁴¹ and afterward he shall go out with his free children, and he shall turn again to his kindred, and to the possession of his fathers. (and then he shall go out free with his children, and he shall return to his family, and to his inheritance from his fathers.)

⁴² For they be my servants, and I led them out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold by the condition of servants; (For they be my slaves, and I led them out of Egypt; and they shall not be sold into human slavery;)

⁴³ torment thou not them by thy power, but dread thou thy Lord. (so do not thou torment him with thy power, but rather, fear thou thy God.)

⁴⁴ A servant and (a) handmaid be to you of the nations that be in your compass, and of the comelings the which be pilgrims with you, (For your slaves and your slave-girls, buy thou them from the nations that be all around you, and from the newcomers who be foreigners, or strangers, among you,)

⁴⁵ either they that be born of comelings in your land; ye shall have these (as) servants, and by right of heritage ye shall leave them to your after-comers, and ye shall wield them without end; (or they who be born to newcomers in your land; ye shall have them as your slaves, and by right of inheritance ye shall leave them to your after-comers, and so ye shall own them forever;)

⁴⁰ but he schal be as an hirid man and tenaunt; `til to the yeer of iubilee he schal worche at thee,

⁴¹ and aftirward he schal go out with his fre children, and he schal turne ayen to the kynrede, and to `the possessioun of his fadris.

⁴² For thei ben my seruauntis, and Y ledde hem out of the lond of Egipt; thei schulen not be seeld bi the condicioun of seruauntis;

⁴³ turmente thou not hem bi thi power, but drede thou thi Lord.

⁴⁴ A seruaunt and handmaide be to you of naciouns that ben in youre cumpas,

⁴⁵ and of comelyngis that ben pilgrimys at you, ether thei that ben borun of hem in youre lond; ye schulen haue these seruauntis,

⁴⁰ as an hireling, as a settler, he is with thee, till the year of the jubilee he doth serve with thee, —

⁴¹ then he hath gone out from thee, he and his sons with him, and hath turned back unto his family; even unto the possession of his fathers he doth turn back.

⁴² 'For they are My servants, whom I have brought out from the land of Egypt: they are not sold with the sale of a servant;

⁴³ thou rulest not over him with rigour, and thou hast been afraid of thy God.

⁴⁴ 'And thy man-servant and thy handmaid whom thou hast are of the nations who are round about you; of them ye buy man-servant and handmaid,

⁴⁵ and also of the sons of the settlers who are sojourning with you, of them ye buy, and of their families who are with you, which they have begotten in your land, and they have been to you for a possession;
