Leviticus 21:1-3 in English

¹ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none defile himself for the dead among his people;

² except for his kin, that is near unto him, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother,

³ and for his sister a virgin, that is near unto him, that hath had no husband; for her may he defile himself.

¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt tell them that they shall not defile themselves in their nation for the dead,

² but they may mourn for a relative who is very near to them, for a father and mother, and sons and daughters, for a brother,

³ and for a virgin sister that is near to one, that is not espoused to a man; for these one shall defile himself.

¹ Yahweh also said to Moses/me, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them,

² ‘You priests must not cause yourselves to become unfit to do my work by touching corpses. Priests are permitted to touch only the corpses of close relatives, such as the priest's mother or father or his son or daughter or his brother.

³ Priests are also permitted to touch the corpse of a sister if she is not married, because she has no husband to bury her body.

¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and you shall tell them that they shall not defile themselves in their nation for the dead,

² but they may mourn for a relative who is very near to them, for a father and mother, and sons and daughters, for a brother,

³ and for a virgin sister that is near to one, that is not espoused to a man; for these one shall defile himself.

¹ Yahweh said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, ‘A priest shall not defile himself for the dead among his people,

² except for his relatives that are near to him: for his mother, for his father, for his son, for his daughter, for his brother,

³ and for his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.

¹ The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, ‘A priest shall not defile himself for the dead amongst his people,

² except for his relatives that are near to him: for his mother, for his father, for his son, for his daughter, for his brother,

³ and for his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.

¹ And the Lord said to Moses, Say to the priests, the sons of Aaron, Let no man make himself unclean for the dead among his people;

² But only for his near relations, for his mother or his father, his son or his daughter, and his brother;

³ And for his sister, a virgin, for she is his near relation and has had no husband, he may make himself unclean.

¹ And Jehovah said to Moses, Speak unto the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none make himself unclean for a dead person among his peoples,

² except for his immediate relation, who is near unto him — for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother;

³ and for his sister, a virgin, that is near unto him, who hath had no husband, for her may he make himself unclean.

¹ The Lord said also to Moses: Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt say to them: Let not a priest incur an uncleanness at the death of his citizens:

² But only for his kin, such as are near in blood, that is to say, for his father and for his mother, and for his son, and for his daughter, for his brother also,

³ And for a maiden sister, who hath had no husband:

¹ The Lord told Moses, “Tell Aaron's sons, the priests: A priest is not to make himself unclean by touching the dead body of any of his relatives.

² The only exceptions are for his immediate family. This includes his mother, father, son, daughter, or brother,

³ or his unmarried sister since she is a close relative because she doesn't have a husband.

¹ And the Lord said vnto Moses, Speake vnto the Priestes the sonnes of Aaron, and say vnto them, Let none be defiled by the dead among his people,

² But by his kinseman that is neere vnto him: to wit, by his mother, or by his father, or by his sonne, or by his daughter, or by his brother,

³ Or by his sister a maid, that is neere vnto him, which hath not had a husband: for her he may lament.

¹ And the LORD said unto Moses: Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them: There shall none defile himself for the dead among his people;

² except for his kin, that is near unto him, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother;

³ and for his sister a virgin, that is near unto him, that hath had no husband, for her may he defile himself.

³ And on his sister that is a virgin, that is nigh unto him, who hath had no husband: on her may he defile himself.

¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt tell them that they shall not defile themselves in their nation for the dead,

² but they may mourn for a relative who is very near to them, for a father and mother, and sons and daughters, for a brother,

³ and for a virgin sister that is near to one, that is not espoused to a man; for these one shall defile himself.

¹ And the Lord spake with Mosheh, saying: Speak unto the priests, the sons of Aharon, and say to them: Let no one be defiled among his people on account of the dead:

² Yet for his kin, who is nigh to him, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother,

³ and for his sister, a virgin who is near to him, who hath no husband, for her he may be defiled.

¹ Adonai said to Moses Drawn out, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron Light-bringer, and say to them, ‘A priest shall not defile himself for the dead among his people;

² except for his relatives that are near to him: for his mother, for his father, for his son, for his daughter, for his brother,

³ and for his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.

¹ Yahweh said to Moses: “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, 'No one among you shall make himself unclean for those who die among his people,

² except for his closest relatives—his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, his brother,

³ or his virgin sister who is dependent on him, since she has no husband—for her he may make himself unclean.

¹ Yahweh said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, ‘A priest shall not defile himself for the dead among his people,

² except for his relatives that are near to him: for his mother, for his father, for his son, for his daughter, for his brother,

³ and for his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.

¹ The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, ‘A priest shall not defile himself for the dead amongst his people,

² except for his relatives that are near to him: for his mother, for his father, for his son, for his daughter, for his brother,

³ and for his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.

¹ And the Lord said to Moses, Speak thou to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt say to them, A priest be not defouled in the dead men of his citizens,

² no but only in his kinsmen, and nigh of blood, that is, on father, and mother, and son, and daughter, and brother,

³ and sister, a virgin, that is not wedded to man;

¹ And the Lord said to Moses, Speak thou to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt say to them, A priest be not defouled in the dead men of his citizens (or A priest shall not be defiled with the dead among his fellow citizens),

² no but only in his kinsmen, and nigh of blood, that is, on father, and mother, and son, and daughter, and brother, (only with his own relatives, and next of kin, that is, with his father, and mother, and son, and daughter, and brother,)

³ and sister, (who is) a virgin, that is not wedded to man;

¹ And the Lord seide to Moyses, Speke thou to preestis, the sones of Aaron, and thou schalt seie to hem, A preest be not defoulid in the deed men of hise citeseyns,

² no but oneli in kynesmen and niy of blood, that is, on fadir and modir, and sone and douyter,

³ and brother and sister, virgyn, which is not weddid to man;

¹ And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Speak unto the priests, sons of Aaron, and thou hast said unto them, For any person a priest is not defiled among his people,

² except for his relation who is near unto him — for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother.

³ and for his sister, the virgin, who is near unto him, who hath not been to a man; for her he is defiled.
