John 4:1-12 in English

¹ When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

² (although Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples),

³ he left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.

⁴ And he must needs pass through Samaria.

⁵ So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph:

⁶ and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

⁷ There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

⁸ For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.

⁹ The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹¹ The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou that living water?

¹² Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?

¹ Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John

² (although Jesus Himself wasn’t baptizing, but His disciples were),

³ He left Judea, and went back towards Galilee.

⁴ He had to go through Samaria.

⁵ He came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph,

⁶ and Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

⁷ A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”

⁸ His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.

⁹ The Samaritan woman therefore asked Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink, since I’m a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans.)

¹⁰ Jesus answered her, “If you knew God’s gift, and who it is who says to you, ‘Please give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

¹¹ The woman said, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where could you get this living water from?

¹² Are You greater than our forefather Jacob, who gave us this well and who used to drink from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?”

¹ When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

² (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

³ He left Judæa, and departed again into Galilee.

¹ At that time, many people were asking Jesus to baptize them. He did not baptize people; it was we his disciples who were doing the baptizing. But when some of the Pharisee religious group heard people say that Jesus was making more disciples than John the Baptizer and was baptizing them, they became very jealous.

³ When the Lord Jesus heard about that, so that the Pharisees would not cause trouble for him, he left Judea district, and went again with us disciples to Galilee district.

⁴ He knew that God wanted him to travel through Samaria district.

⁵ So we arrived at a town named Sychar in Samaria district. That was near the plot of ground that our ancestor Jacob had given to his son Joseph long ago.

⁶ The well that used to belong to Jacob was on that plot of ground. Jesus was tired from walking. So while we disciples went into the town to buy some food, he sat down alongside the well. It was about noontime. A woman who lived there in Samaria came to get some water from the well. Jesus said to her, “Will you give me from the well some water to drink?” The woman knew that Jews did not like ◄ to touch things that belong to Samaritans/ to come near Samaritans►, (OR, Jews did not like to associate with Samaritans,)

⁹ so the woman said to him, “You are a Jew, and I am from Samaria. Furthermore, I am a woman. So ◄ I am surprised that you are asking me for a drink of water!/how is it that you are asking me for a drink of water?► RHQ”

¹⁰ Jesus replied to her, “If you (sg) knew what God wanted to give you, and if you knew who I am, the one who is asking you for a drink, you would have asked me, and I would have given you water that gives life.”

¹¹ She thought he was talking about ordinary water. So she said to him, “Sir, you do not have a bucket or a rope with which to get water from the well, and the well is deep. So since you cannot get water from this well, where can you get that life-giving water?

¹² Our ancestor Jacob left us this well. He drank water from it, and there was enough good water so that his sons and his flocks of sheep and goats drank from it also. Do you claim that you are greater than Jacob, and because of that you can give us life-giving water?”

¹ Now when it was clear to the Lord that word had come to the ears of the Pharisees that Jesus was making more disciples than John and was giving them baptism

² (Though, in fact, it was his disciples who gave baptism, not Jesus himself),

³ He went out of Judaea into Galilee again.

⁴ And it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.

⁵ So he came to a town of Samaria which was named Sychar, near to the bit of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph:

⁶ Now Jacob's fountain was there. Jesus, being tired after his journey, was resting by the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.

⁷ A woman of Samaria came to get water, and Jesus said to her, Give me some water.

⁸ For his disciples had gone to the town to get food.

⁹ The woman of Samaria said to him, Why do you, a Jew, make a request for water to me, a woman of Samaria? She said this because Jews have nothing to do with the people of Samaria.

¹⁰ In answer Jesus said, If you had knowledge of what God gives freely and who it is who says to you, Give me water, you would make your prayer to him, and he would give you living water.

¹¹ The woman said to him, Sir, you have no vessel and the fountain is deep; from where will you get the living water?

¹² Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the fountain and took the water of it himself, with his children and his cattle?

¹ When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptises more disciples than John

² (however, Jesus himself did not baptise, but his disciples),

³ he left Judaea and went away again unto Galilee.

⁴ And he must needs pass through Samaria.

⁶ Now a fountain of Jacob's was there; Jesus therefore, being wearied with the way he had come, sat just as he was at the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.

⁷ A woman comes out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus says to her, Give me to drink

⁸ (for his disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions).

⁹ The Samaritan woman therefore says to him, How dost thou, being a Jew, ask to drink of me who am a Samaritan woman? for Jews have no intercourse with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹¹ The woman says to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: whence then hast thou the living water?

¹² Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?

¹ When Jesus therefore understood that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus maketh more disciples, and baptizeth more than John,

² (Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples,)

³ He left Judea, and went again into Galilee.

⁴ And he was of necessity to pass through Samaria.

⁵ He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, which is called Sichar, near the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

⁶ Now Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, being worn out from the journey, sat as He was by the well. It was about 6 p.m.

⁷ A woman of Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, “Give me a drink.”

⁸ (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

⁹ So the Samaritan woman says to Him, “How can you, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?” (for Jews do not associate with Samaritans).

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who is the one saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

¹¹ The woman says to Him: “Sir, you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep; so where do you get this living water?

¹² You aren't greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”

¹ When Jesus realized that the Pharisees had discovered that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John,

² (although it wasn't Jesus who was baptizing, but his disciples),

³ he left Judea and returned to Galilee.

⁴ On the way he had to pass through Samaria.

⁵ So he came to the Samaritan city of Sychar, near to the field that Jacob had given his son Joseph.

⁶ Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, who was tired from the journey, sat straight down beside the well. It was around noon.

⁷ A Samaritan woman came to fetch water. Jesus said to her, “Please could you give me a drink?”

⁸ for his disciples had gone to the town to buy food.

⁹ “You're a Jew, and I'm a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” the woman replied, for Jews don't associate with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered her, “If you only recognized God's gift, and who is asking you, ‘Please could you give me a drink?’ you would have asked him and he would have given you the water of life.”

¹¹ “Sir, you don't have a bucket, and the well is deep. Where are you going to get the water of life from?” she replied.

¹² “Our father Jacob gave us the well. He drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock. Are you greater than he?”

¹ Nowe when the Lord knew, how the Pharises had heard, that Iesus made and baptized moe disciples then Iohn,

² (Though Iesus himselfe baptized not: but his disciples)

³ Hee left Iudea, and departed againe into Galile.

⁴ And he must needes goe through Samaria.

⁵ Then came hee to a citie of Samaria called Sychar, neere vnto the possession that Iacob gaue to his sonne Ioseph.

⁶ And there was Iacobs well. Iesus then wearied in the iourney, sate thus on the well: it was about the sixt houre.

⁷ There came a woman of Samaria to drawe water. Iesus sayd vnto her, Giue me drinke.

⁸ For his disciples were gone away into the citie, to buy meate.

⁹ Then sayde the woman of Samaria vnto him, Howe is it, that thou being a Iewe, askest drinke of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Iewes meddle not with the Samaritans.

¹⁰ Iesus answered and saide vnto her, If thou knewest that gift of God, and who it is that saieth to thee, Giue mee drinke, thou wouldest haue asked of him, and hee woulde haue giuen thee, water of life.

¹¹ The woman saide vnto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to drawe with, and the well is deepe: from whence then hast thou that water of life?

¹² Art thou greater then our father Iacob, which gaue vs the well, and hee himselfe dranke thereof, and his sonnes, and his cattell?

² (although Yeshua Salvation himself didn’t baptize, but his disciples),

³ he left Judea Praise, and departed into Galilee District, Circuit.

⁴ He needed to pass through Samaria Watch-mountain.

⁵ So he came to a city of Samaria Watch-mountain, called Sychar Shoulder, near the parcel of ground that Jacob Supplanter gave to his son, Joseph May he add.

⁶ Jacob Supplanter’s well was there. Yeshua Salvation therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

⁷ A woman of Samaria Watch-mountain came to draw water. Yeshua Salvation said to her, “Give me a drink.”

⁸ For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

⁹ The Samaritan person from Watch-mountain woman therefore said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew Praiser, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan person from Watch-mountain woman?” (For Jews Praisers have no dealings with Samaritans people from Watch-mountain.)

¹⁰ Yeshua Salvation answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. So where do you get that living water?

¹² Are you greater than Avinu ·our Father·, Jacob Supplanter, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, as did his children, and his livestock?”

¹ Assone as the Lorde had knowledge how the Pharises had hearde that Iesus made and baptised moo disciples then Iohn

² (though that Iesus him selfe baptised not: but his disciples)

³ he lefte Iewry and departed agayne into Galile.

⁴ And it was so that he must nedes goo thorowe Samaria.

⁵ Then came he to a cyte of Samaria called Sichar besydes the possession that Iacob gave to his sonne Ioseph.

⁶ And there was Iacobs well. Iesus then weryed in his iorney sate thus on the well. And it was about the sixte houre:

⁷ and there came a woman of Samaria to drawe water. And Iesus sayde vnto her: geve me drynke.

⁸ For his disciples were gone awaye vnto the toune to bye meate.

⁹ Then sayde the woman of Samaria vnto him: how is it that thou beinge a Iewe axest drinke of me which am a Samaritane? for the Iewes medle not with the Samaritans.

¹⁰ Iesus answered and sayde vnto hir: yf thou knewest the gyfte of God and who it is that sayeth to the geve me drynke thou woldest have axed of him and he wolde have geven the water of lyfe.

¹¹ The woman sayde vnto him. Syr thou hast no thinge to drawe with and the well is depe: from whence then hast thou that water of lyfe?

¹² Arte thou greater then oure father Iacob which gave vs the well and he him silfe dranke therof and his chyldren and his catell?

¹ Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was making and baptizing more disciples than John

² (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),

³ he left Judea and went back again to Galilee.

⁴ But it was necessary for him to go through Samaria.

⁵ So he came to a town of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

⁶ The well of Jacob was there. Jesus was tired from his journey and sat by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

⁷ A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me some water to drink.”

⁸ For his disciples had gone away into the town to buy food.

⁹ Then the Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are asking me, being a Samaritan woman, for something to drink?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, “If you had known the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

¹¹ The woman said to him, “Sir, you do not have a bucket and the well is deep. Where then do you have the living water?

¹² You are not greater, are you, than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his cattle?”

¹ Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

² (although Jesus himself didn’t baptize, but his disciples),

³ he left Judea and departed into Galilee.

⁹ Therefore that woman of Samaria saith to him, How thou, that art a Jew, askest of me a drink, that am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews used not to deal with the Samaritans.

¹¹ The woman saith to him, Sire, thou hast not wherein to draw, and the pit is deep; whereof then hast thou quick water?

¹² Whether thou art greater than our father Jacob, that gave to us the pit? and he drank thereof, and his sons, and his beasts.

¹ Therefore as Jesus knew, that the Pharisees heard, that Jesus maketh and baptizeth more disciples than John,

² though Jesus baptized not, but his disciples,

³ he left Judea, and went again into Galilee.

⁴ And it behooved him to pass by Samaria. (And it was necessary that he pass through Samaria.)

⁷ And a woman came from Samaria, to draw water, (or And a woman of Samaria came to draw water). And Jesus saith to her, Give me (a) drink.

⁸ And his disciples were gone into the city, to buy meat (or to buy some food).

⁹ Therefore that woman of Samaria saith to him, How (is it that) thou, that art a Jew, askest of me (for) a drink, that am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews used not to deal with the Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered, and said to her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is, that saith to thee, Give me (a) drink, thou peradventure wouldest have asked of him, and he should have given to thee quick water (or and then he would have given thee living water).

¹¹ The woman saith to him, Sire, thou hast not wherein to draw, and the pit is deep; whereof then hast thou quick water? (The woman said to him, Sir, thou hast nothing with which to draw up the water, and the well is deep; from where then would thou get this living water?)

¹² Whether thou art greater than our father Jacob, that gave to us the pit? and he drank thereof, and his sons, and his beasts. (Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well? and he, and his sons, and his beasts, all drank from it.)

¹ Therfor as Jhesu knew, that the Farisees herden, that Jhesu makith and baptisith mo disciplis than Joon,

² thouy Jhesus baptiside not, but hise disciplis, he lefte Judee,

³ and wente ayen in to Galilee.

⁴ And it bihofte hym to passe bi Samarie.

⁵ Therfor Jhesus cam in to a citee of Samarie, that is seid Sicar, bisidis the place, that Jacob yaf to Joseph, his sone.

⁶ And the welle of Jacob was there; and Jhesus was weri of the iourney, and sat thus vpon the welle. And the our was, as it were the sixte.

⁷ And a womman cam fro Samarie, to drawe watir. And Jhesus seith to hir, Yyue me drynk.

⁸ And hise disciplis weren gon in to the citee, to bie mete.

⁹ Therfor thilke womman of Samarie seith to him, Hou thou, `whanne thou art a Jewe, axist of me drynk, that am a womman of Samarie? for Jewis vsiden not to dele with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jhesus answerde, and seide to hir, If thou wistist the yifte of God, and who `he is, that seith to thee, Yyue me drynk, thou perauenture woldist haue axid of hym, and he schulde haue youun to thee quyk watir.

¹¹ The womman seith to him, Sire, thou hast not where ynne to drawe, and the pit is deep; wherof thanne hast thou quik watir?

¹² Whethir thou art grettere than oure fadir Jacob, that yaf to vs the pit? and he drank therof, and hise sones, and hise beestis.

¹ When therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,

² (though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)

³ he left Judea and went away again to Galilee,

⁴ and it was behoving him to go through Samaria.

⁵ He cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;

⁶ and there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;

⁷ there cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, 'Give me to drink;'

⁸ for his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;

⁹ the Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, 'How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, 'If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.'

¹¹ The woman saith to him, 'Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?

¹² Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?'
