John 4:1-12

¹Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John”

²(although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples),

³He left Judea and went away into Galilee.

⁴Now He needed to go through Samaria;

⁵so He comes to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

⁶Now Jacob's well was there; so Jesus, being worn out from the journey, sat as He was by the well. It was about 6 p.m.

⁷A woman of Samaria comes to draw water. Jesus says to her, “Give me a drink.”

⁸(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

⁹So the Samaritan woman says to Him, “How can you, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?” (for Jews do not associate with Samaritans).

¹⁰Jesus answered and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who is the one saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

¹¹The woman says to Him: “Sir, you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep; so where do you get this living water?

¹²You aren't greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”
