John 15:1-21 in English

¹ I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

² Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.

³ Already ye are clean because of the word which I have spoken unto you.

⁴ Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; so neither can ye, except ye abide in me.

⁵ I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.

⁶ If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

⁷ If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

⁸ Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; and so shall ye be my disciples.

⁹ Even as the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you: abide ye in my love.

¹⁰ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

¹¹ These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

¹² This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you.

¹³ Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

¹⁴ Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which I command you.

¹⁵ No longer do I call you servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known unto you.

¹⁶ Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

¹⁷ These things I command you, that ye may love one another.

¹⁸ If the world hateth you, ye know that it hath hated me before it hated you.

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

²⁰ Remember the word that I said unto you, A servant is not greater than his lord. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

²¹ But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

¹ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

² He takes away every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, and He prunes every branch that bears fruit, so that it may bear more fruit.

³ You are already pruned clean because of the words which I have spoken to you.

⁴ Live in me, as I live in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit of itself, unless it lives in the vine, so neither can you, unless you live in me.

⁵ I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever lives in me, and I in them, bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.

⁶ Anyone who doesn’t live in me is thrown away as a branch, and dries up. The dried up branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

⁷ If you live in me, and my words live in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.

⁸ My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, so you will prove to be my disciples.

⁹ “Just as the Father has sincerely loved me, I have also sincerely loved you. Continue to live in my sincere love.

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you will continue to live in my sincere love; just as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and continue to live in His sincere love.

¹¹ I have told you these things, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

¹² This is my commandment, that you sincerely love one another, just as I have sincerely loved you.

¹³ No one has greater sincere love than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.

¹⁵ I don’t call you servants any longer, because a servant doesn’t know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.

¹⁶ You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, so that you should go and bear fruit, and so that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in my name He may give you.

¹⁷ I command you this, that you sincerely love one another.

¹⁸ “If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you.

¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own. Because you aren’t the world’s, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

²⁰ Remember that I told you, ‘A servant isn’t greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my teaching, they will also obey yours.

²¹ The world will do all these things to you, however, for My name’s sake, because they don’t know Him who sent me.

¹ Jesus talked to us as we were walking along. Speaking figuratively of the need for us to live in a way that God wants us to, he said, “I am like MET a genuine vine, not like those Jewish leaders who do not teach the truth. My father is like MET a gardener who works to take care of a vineyard.

² Just like a gardener cuts off the branches that bear no grapes MET, God gets rid of those who do not please him even though they say that they belong to him. Those branches that bear fruit, the gardener trims so that they may bear more grapes. Similarly, my Father disciplines/corrects those who live as he wants them to live.

³ You are already like the branches that a gardener trims because you have believed the message that I have told you.

⁴ Remain having a close relationship with me. If you do that, I will remain having a close relationship with you. A branch of a vine cannot bear fruit if it is cut off and left by itself. To bear fruit, it must remain attached to the vine. Similarly, you cannot live the way that God wants you to if you do not remain united to me MET.

⁵ I am like MET a vine. You are like MET the branches. All those who have a close relationship with me and with whom I have a close relationship will do much that pleases God, like MET a vine that bears much fruit. Remember that you can do nothing HYP that truly pleases God without my help.

⁶ A gardener cuts off and throws away useless branches. Then, after they dry up, he picks them up and throws them into a fire and burns them SIM. Similarly, everyone who does not remain having a close relationship with me, God will get rid of.

⁷ If you remain having a close relationship with me and you keep living in accordance with my message, you can ask God to do anything for you, and he will do it.

⁸ The way my Father is honored is by your {The way you honor my Father is by} doing much that pleases him MET, and by doing that, you will show that you are my disciples.

⁹ I have loved you just as my Father has loved me. Now keep living in a way that is appropriate for those whom I love.

¹⁰ If you obey what I have commanded you, you will be acting in a way that is appropriate for those whom I love, just like I have obeyed what my Father has commanded me and I act in a way that is appropriate for someone whom he loves.

¹¹ I have told you these things so that you may be joyful as I am joyful, and that you may be completely joyful.

¹² What I am commanding you is this: Love each other just like I have loved you.

¹³ The best way that people can show that they love someone is to die for that person. There is no way that you can love someone in a greater way than that.

¹⁴ You show that you are my friends if you keep doing what I have commanded you.

¹⁵ I will no longer call you my servants, because servants do not know why their masters want them to do things. Instead, I have said that you are my friends, because I, acting like a friend, have revealed to you everything that my Father told me.

¹⁶ You did not decide to become my disciples. Instead, I chose you, so that you would do many things that please him MET. The results of what you do will last forever. I also chose you so that my Father will do for you whatever you, using my authority, ask him to do MTY.

¹⁷ I repeat what I have commanded you: Love each other.”

¹⁸ “The people who are opposed to God will hate you. When that happens, remember that they hated me first.

¹⁹ If you belonged to those who are opposed to God MTY, they would love you like they love those who belong to them. But you do not belong to those who are opposed to God MTY. Instead, I chose you so that you would separate yourselves from MTY them. That is why those who are opposed to God MTY hate you.

²⁰ Remember these words that I told you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ That means that you, who are like my servants, cannot expect people to treat you better than they treat me. So, since they have ◄persecuted me/caused me to suffer►, they will ◄persecute you/cause you to suffer► also. If they had paid attention to the things I taught them, they would pay attention to what you teach them.

²¹ They will treat you like that because you belong to me MTY, and because they do not know the one who sent me.

³ You are clean, even now, through the teaching which I have given you.

⁴ Be in me at all times as I am in you. As the branch is not able to give fruit of itself, if it is not still on the vine, so you are not able to do so if you are not in me.

⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: he who is in me at all times as I am in him, gives much fruit, because without me you are able to do nothing.

⁶ If a man does not keep himself in me, he becomes dead and is cut off like a dry branch; such branches are taken up and put in the fire and burned.

⁷ If you are in me at all times, and my words are in you, then anything for which you make a request will be done for you.

⁸ Here is my Father's glory, in that you give much fruit and so are my true disciples.

⁹ Even as the Father has given me his love, so I have given my love to you: be ever in my love.

¹⁰ If you keep my laws, you will be ever in my love, even as I have kept my Father's laws, and am ever in his love.

¹¹ I have said these things to you so that I may have joy in you and so that your joy may be complete.

¹² This is the law I give you: Have love one for another, even as I have love for you.

¹³ Greater love has no man than this, that a man gives up his life for his friends.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do what I give you orders to do.

¹⁵ No longer do I give you the name of servants; because a servant is without knowledge of what his master is doing: I give you the name of friends, because I have given you knowledge of all the things which my Father has said to me.

¹⁶ You did not take me for yourselves, but I took you for myself; and I gave you the work of going about and producing fruit which will be for ever; so that whatever request you make to the Father in my name he may give it to you.

¹⁷ So this is my law for you: Have love one for another.

¹⁸ If you are hated by the world, keep in mind that I was hated by the world before you.

¹⁹ If you were of the world, you would be loved by the world: but because you are not of the world, but I have taken you out of the world, you are hated by the world.

²⁰ Keep in mind the words I said to you, A servant is not greater than his lord. If they were cruel to me, they will be cruel to you; if they kept my words, they will keep yours.

²¹ They will do all this to you because of my name — because they have no knowledge of him who sent me.

⁷ If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask whatever you may desire, and it shall be done for you.

⁸ By this My Father is glorified, that you may bear much fruit; and you will become My disciples.

⁹ “Just as the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.

¹⁰ If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and I abide in His love.

¹¹ “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may abide in you, and that your joy may be full.

¹² This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

¹³ Greater love has no one than this, that one should lay down his life for his friends.

¹⁴ You are My friends if you do what I command you.

¹⁵ No longer do I call you servants, because a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because all things which I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

²¹ Now they will do all of these things to you because of my name, in that they do not know the One who sent me.

² He cuts off every one of my branches that doesn't bear fruit. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so it can bear even more.

³ You are already pruned and made clean through what I've told you.

⁴ Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it remains part of the vine, so it is for you: you cannot bear fruit unless you remain in me.

⁵ I'm the vine, you're the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit—for apart from me you can't do anything.

⁶ Anyone who doesn't remain in me is like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Such branches are gathered together, thrown into the fire and burned.

⁵ ...Jesus said to his men, you cannot do anything without me. Perhaps someone might leave me by going in a different way, he will become like a dry branch. Branches like those, people gather in a heap to burn. Stay joined to me and do according to my word carefully, as a result of doing that you can ask God for anything, whatever it is, he will do that very thing. My people are good, they continually do good. When people see it truly they will praise my Father.

² Every braunche that beareth not frute in me he will take awaye. And every braunche that beareth frute will he pourge that it maye bringe moare frute.

³ Now are ye cleane thorow the wordes which I have spoke vnto you.

⁴ Byde in me and let me byde in you. As the braunche cannot beare frute of it sylfe excepte it byde in the vyne: no more can ye excepte ye abyde in me.

⁵ I am the vyne and ye are the braunches. He that abydeth in me and I in him the same bringeth forth moche frute. For with out me can ye do nothinge.

¹⁸ If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you.

¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

²¹ But they will do all these things to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me.

¹ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.

² Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

³ You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

⁴ Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me.

⁵ I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

⁶ If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burnt.

⁷ If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

⁸ “In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.

⁹ Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.

¹⁰ If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.

¹¹ I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full.

⁴ Dwell ye in me, and I in you; as a branch may not make fruit of itself, no but it dwell in the vine, so neither ye, no but ye dwell in me. (Remain in me, and I in you; for a branch cannot make fruit by itself, unless it remain on the vine, so neither can ye, unless ye remain in me.)

⁵ I am the vine, ye be the branches. Who that dwelleth (or remaineth) in me or He that dwelleth in me, and I in him, this beareth much fruit, for without me ye may nothing do (or for ye can do nothing without me).

¹⁰ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall dwell in my love; as I have kept the commandments of my Father, and dwell in his love. (If ye obey my commandments, ye shall remain in my love; as I have obeyed my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love.)

¹¹ These things I spake to you, (so) that my joy be in you, and your joy be full-filled (or and that your joy be filled full).

² Ech braunch in me that berith not fruyt, he schal take awey it; and ech that berith fruyt, he schal purge it, that it bere the more fruyt.

³ Now ye ben clene, for the word that Y haue spokun to you.

⁴ Dwelle ye in me, and Y in you; as a braunche may not make fruyt of it silf, but it dwelle in the vyne, so nether ye, but ye dwelle in me.

⁵ Y am a vyne, ye the braunchis. Who that dwellith in me, and Y in hym, this berith myche fruyt, for with outen me ye moun no thing do.

⁶ If ony man dwellith not in me, he schal be caste out as a braunche, and schal wexe drie; and thei schulen gadere hym, and thei schulen caste hym in to the fier, and he brenneth.

⁷ If ye dwellen in me, and my wordis dwelle in you, what euer thing ye wolen, ye schulen axe, and it schal be don to you.

⁸ In this thing my fadir is clarified, that ye brynge forth ful myche fruyt, and that ye be maad my disciplis.

⁹ As my fadir louede me, Y haue loued you; dwelle ye in my loue.

¹⁰ If ye kepen my comaundementis, ye schulen dwelle in my loue; as Y haue kept the comaundementis of my fadir, and Y dwelle in his loue.

¹¹ These thingis Y spak to you, that my ioye be in you, and youre ioye be fulfillid.

¹² This is my comaundement, that ye loue togidere, as Y louede you.

¹³ No man hath more loue than this, that a man putte his lijf for hise freendis.

¹⁴ Ye ben my freendis if ye doen tho thingis, that Y comaunde to you.

¹⁵ Now Y schal not clepe you seruauntis, for the seruaunt woot not, what his lord schal do; but Y haue clepid you freendis, for alle thingis what euere Y herde of my fadir, Y haue maad knowun to you.

¹⁶ Ye han not chosun me, but Y chees you; and Y haue put you, that ye go, and brynge forth fruyt, and youre fruyt dwelle; that what euere thing ye axen the fadir in my name, he yyue to you.

¹⁷ These thingis Y comaunde to you, that ye loue togidere.

¹⁸ If the world hatith you, wite ye, that it hadde me in hate rather than you.

¹⁹ If ye hadden be of the world, the world schulde loue that thing that was his; but for ye ben not of the world, but Y chees you fro the world, therfor the world hatith you.

²⁰ Haue ye mynde of my word, which Y seide to you, The seruaunt is not grettere than his lord. If thei han pursued me, thei schulen pursue you also; if thei han kept my word, thei schulen kepe youre also.

²¹ But thei schulen do to you alle these thingis for my name, for thei knowen not hym that sente me.

¹ 'I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman;

² every branch in me not bearing fruit, He doth take it away, and every one bearing fruit, He doth cleanse by pruning it, that it may bear more fruit;

³ already ye are clean, because of the word that I have spoken to you;

⁴ remain in me, and I in you, as the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself, if it may not remain in the vine, so neither ye, if ye may not remain in me.

⁷ if ye may remain in me, and my sayings in you may remain, whatever ye may wish ye shall ask, and it shall be done to you.

⁹ According as the Father did love me, I also loved you, remain in my love;

¹⁰ if my commandments ye may keep, ye shall remain in my love, according as I the commands of my Father have kept, and do remain in His love;

¹¹ these things I have spoken to you, that my joy in you may remain, and your joy may be full.

¹² 'This is my command, that ye love one another, according as I did love you;

¹³ greater love than this hath no one, that any one his life may lay down for his friends;
