²⁰ Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.

²¹ Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

²² And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

²³ Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

²⁴ Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

²⁵ Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;

²⁶ and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

²⁷ She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, even he that cometh into the world.

²⁸ And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is here, and calleth thee.

²⁹ And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

³⁰ (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)

³¹ The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.

³² Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

³⁷ But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?

³⁸ Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹ Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been dead four days.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.

⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.

⁴³ And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴⁴ He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁵ Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.

²⁰ When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed home.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²² Even now I know that God will give you whatever You ask of Him.”

²³ Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live even if they die,

²⁶ and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes, Lord,” she answered, “I have believed that You are the Christ, God’s Son, who was to come into the world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went back and called Mary, her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

²⁹ When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to Him.

³⁰ Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ The Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go out. They followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³² When Mary came to where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ He asked, “Where have you laid him?” They replied, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man from dying?”

³⁸ Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a boulder was placed against the entrance.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the boulder.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, because he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Jesus told her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you would believe you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹ Then they took the boulder away from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard me.

⁴² I know that You always hear me, but because of the people who are standing here I said this, that they may believe that You sent me.”

⁴³ Now when He had said these things, He called loudly, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ He who had died came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus told them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus did.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What are we doing? For this Man performs many signs.

²⁰ Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

²¹ Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

²² But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

³¹ The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

³² Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴ And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴⁴ And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁵ Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

²¹ When Martha got to where Jesus was, she said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died because you would have healed him!

²² But I know that even now God will do for you whatever you ask concerning my brother.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will become alive again!”

²⁴ Martha said to him, “I know that he will become alive again when all people become alive again on the Judgment day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am the one who enables people to become alive again and who causes people to live eternally. Those who believe in me, even if they die, will live again.

²⁶ Furthermore, all those who believe in me while they are alive, their souls will not die forever. Do you believe that?”

²⁷ She said to him, “Yes, Lord! I believe that you are the Messiah, ◄the Son of God/the man who is also God►. You are the one God promised to send into the world!”

²⁸ After she said that, she returned to the house and took her younger sister, Mary, aside and said to her, “The Teacher is close to our village, and he wants to talk to you.”

²⁹ When Mary heard that, she got up quickly and went to him.

³⁰ Jesus had not yet entered the village; he was still at the place where Martha met him.

³¹ The Jews who were in the house with Mary, consoling her, saw Mary get up quickly and go outside. So they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb where they had buried Lazarus, in order to cry there.

³² When Mary got to where Jesus was and saw him, she prostrated herself at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my younger brother would not have died!”

³³ When Jesus saw her crying, and saw that the Jews who had come with her were also crying, he was very angry that Satan had caused Lazarus to die (OR, very troubled) and disturbed in his spirit.

³⁴ He said, “Where have you buried ◄him/his body►?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus began to cry.

³⁶ Then some of the Jews said, “Look how much he loved Lazarus!”

³⁷ But some others said, “He enabled a blind man to see. So ◄he should have been able to heal this man so that he did not die!/why did he not heal this man so that he did not die?► RHQ”

³⁸ Within himself Jesus was again very angry about Lazarus dying (OR, very troubled). He came to the tomb. It was a cave. The entrance had been covered with a large stone.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the stone!” Martha, who, as I mentioned before, was an older sister of the man who had died, said, “Lord, his body has been in the tomb for four days, so now there will be a bad smell!”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “I told RHQ you that if you believed in ◄ me/what I can do►, you would see how great God is! Have you forgotten that?”

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up toward heaven and said, “My Father, I thank you that you heard me when I prayed about this earlier.

⁴² I know that you always hear me when I pray. But instead of just praying silently, I said that for the sake of the people who are standing here. I want them to believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ After he said that, he shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ The man who had been dead came out! The strips of cloth were still wrapped around his hands and feet, and a cloth was still around his face, but he came out! Jesus said to them, “Take off the cloths so that he can walk easily!” So they did that.

⁴⁵ As a result, many of the Jews who had come to see Mary and who had seen what Jesus did, believed that he ◄ was the Messiah/had come from God►.

⁴⁶ But some of the others went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered all the members of the Jewish Council together. They started saying to each other, “What are we going to do about Jesus? He is performing many miracles!

²⁰ Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

²² But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.

²³ Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.

²⁴ Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;

²⁶ And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?

²⁷ She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

²⁸ And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.

²⁹ And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.

³⁰ Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.

³² When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

³³ And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,

³⁴ And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.

³⁵ And Jesus himself was weeping.

³⁶ So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!

³⁷ But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?

³⁸ So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.

³⁹ Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.

⁴² I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.

⁴³ Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

⁴⁴ And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.

⁴⁵ Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.

²⁰ Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.

²¹ Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

²² but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

²³ Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.

²⁴ Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;

²⁶ and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

²⁷ She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.

²⁸ And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.

²⁹ She, when she heard that, rises up quickly and comes to him.

³⁰ Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.

³¹ The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.

³² Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

³⁷ And some of them said, Could not this man, who has opened the eyes of the blind man, have caused that this man also should not have died?

³⁸ Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

³⁹ Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days there.

⁴⁰ Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

⁴¹ They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;

⁴² but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

⁴⁴ And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.

⁴⁵ Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;

⁴⁶ but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.

²⁷ She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.

²⁸ And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.

²⁹ She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.

³⁰ For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.

³¹ The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.

³² When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

³³ Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,

³⁴ And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.

³⁵ And Jesus wept.

³⁷ But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?

³⁸ Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?

⁴² And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

⁴⁴ And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?

²⁰ Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

²² But even now I know that whatever You may ask of God, God will give You.”

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He that believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

²⁶ And everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

²⁸ And when she had said these things, she went out and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

²⁹ As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.

³⁰ Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb, so that she may weep there.”

³² Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

³³ Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ Therefore the Jews were saying, “Look how He loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have done something to keep this man from dying?”

³⁸ Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.

³⁹ Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the one having died, said to Him, “Lord, already there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

⁴² And I knew that You always hear Me, but because of the people standing around I said this, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”

⁴³ And having said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”

⁴⁴ And the one having died came out, bound hands and feet with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and seeing the things which Jesus had done, believed in Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What are we doing? For this Man works many signs.

²⁰ Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting at home.

²¹ Then Martha said to Jesus: “Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died.

²² But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”

²³ Jesus says to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha says to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁵ Jesus said to her: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes into me, though he may die, will live;

²⁶ and everyone who both lives and believes into me will never ever die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She says to Him, “Yes, Lord, I have come to believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God, the One coming into the world.”

²⁸ Having said these things she went and called her sister Mary, saying privately, “The Teacher is here and is calling you!”

²⁹ Upon hearing it she gets up quickly and goes to Him.

³⁰ (Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”)

³² Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, upon seeing Him she fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here my brother would not have died!”

³³ So when Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

³⁴ And He said, “Where have you put him?” They say to Him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

³⁷ But some of them said, “Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also kept this one from dying?”

³⁸ Then, groaning within Himself again, Jesus arrived at the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.

³⁹ Jesus says, “Remove the stone!” Martha, the sister of the deceased, says to Him, “Lord, he already stinks; it's been four days!”

⁴⁰ Jesus says to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ Then they took away the stone from where the deceased was lying. Jesus raised His eyes and said: “Father, I thank You that You heard me.

⁴² I know that You always hear me, but I spoke for the sake of the crowd standing around, so that they may believe that You sent me.”

⁴³ Upon saying these things He shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ And out the deceased came! Bound hand and foot with bandages, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus says to them, “Loose him and let him go.”

⁴⁵ So many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed into Him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council and said: “What can we do? Because this man performs many miraculous signs;

²⁰ When Martha found out that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

²¹ Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.

²² But I'm certain that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

²³ Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day,” Martha answered.

²⁵ Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who trust in me will live, even though they die.

²⁶ All who live in me and trust in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one expected to come to this world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went and told her sister Mary in private, “The Teacher's here, and asking to see you.”

²⁹ As soon as she heard, Mary quickly got up and went to see him.

³⁰ Jesus hadn't arrived in the village yet. He was still at the place where Martha had met him.

³¹ The Jews who had been comforting Mary in the home saw how she'd got up quickly and left. So they followed her, thinking she was going to the tomb to weep there.

³² When Mary arrived at the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you'd been here, my brother wouldn't have died.”

³³ When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying as well, he was very troubled and upset.

³⁴ “Where have you laid him?” he asked. They replied, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Then Jesus cried too.

³⁶ “See how much he loved him,” the Jews said.

³⁷ But some of them said, “If he could open the eyes of a blind man, couldn't he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

³⁸ Very troubled, Jesus went to the tomb. It was a cave with a large stone placed at the entrance.

³⁹ “Remove the stone,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man's sister, said, “Lord, by now there will be a terrible smell, for he's been dead for four days.”

⁴⁰ “Didn't I tell you that if you trusted me you would see God's glory?” Jesus replied.

⁴¹ So they removed the stone. Jesus looked heavenwards, and said, “Father, thank you for listening to me.

⁴² I know you always listen to me. I said this because of the crowd standing here so that they will believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ After saying this, Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of linen, and with a cloth around his face. “Unbind him and set him free,” Jesus told them.

⁴⁵ Consequently many of the Jews who had come to comfort Mary and who saw what Jesus did put their trust in him.

⁴⁶ But others went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the ruling council. “What shall we do?” they asked. “This man is doing many miracles.

²⁰ Then Martha, when shee heard that Iesus was comming, went to meete him: but Mary sate still in the house.

²¹ Then said Martha vnto Iesus, Lord, if thou hadst bene here, my brother had not bene dead.

²² But now I know also, that whatsoeuer thou askest of God, God will giue it thee.

²³ Iesus said vnto her, Thy brother shall rise againe.

²⁴ Martha said vnto him, I know that he shall rise againe in the resurrection at the last day.

²⁵ Iesus saide vnto her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that beleeueth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he liue.

²⁶ And whosoeuer liueth, and beleeueth in me, shall neuer die: Beleeuest thou this?

²⁷ She said vnto him, Yea, Lord, I beleeue that thou art that Christ that Sonne of God, which should come into the world.

²⁸ And when she had so saide, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

²⁹ And when she heard it, shee arose quickly, and came vnto him.

³⁰ For Iesus was not yet come into the towne, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³¹ The Iewes then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they sawe Marie, that she rose vp hastily, and went out, folowed her, saying, She goeth vnto the graue, to weepe there.

³² Then when Mary was come where Iesus was, and sawe him, she fell downe at his feete, saying vnto him, Lord, if thou haddest bene here, my brother had not bene dead.

³³ When Iesus therefore saw her weepe, and the Iewes also weepe which came with her, hee groned in the spirit, and was troubled in himselfe,

³⁴ And saide, Where haue ye layde him? They said vnto him, Lord, come and see.

³⁵ And Iesus wept.

³⁶ Then saide the Iewes, Beholde, how he loued him.

³⁷ And some of them saide, Coulde not he, which opened the eyes of the blinde, haue made also, that this man should not haue died?

³⁸ Iesus therefore againe groned in himselfe, and came to the graue. And it was a caue, and a stone was layde vpon it.

⁴² I knowe that thou hearest me alwayes, but because of the people that stand by, I said it, that they may beleeue, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ As hee had spoken these things, hee cried with a loude voyce, Lazarus, come foorth.

²⁴ “I know that he will,” replied Martha, “in the resurrection at the Last day.”

²⁵ “I am the resurrection and the life,” said Jesus. “He who believes in me will live, though he die;

²⁶ and he who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes Master,” she answered; “I have learnt to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

²⁸ After saying this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, and whispered, “The teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

²⁹ As soon as Mary heard that, she got up quickly, and went to meet him.

³⁰ Jesus had not then come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

³¹ So the people, who were in the house with Mary, comforting her, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

³² When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she threw herself at his feet. “Master,” she exclaimed, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the people who had come with her weeping also, he groaned deeply, and was greatly distressed.

³⁴ “Where have you buried him?” he asked. “Come and see, Master,” they answered.

³⁵ Jesus burst into tears.

³⁶ “How he must have loved him!” the people exclaimed;

³⁷ but some of them said, “Could not this man, who gave sight to the blind man, have also prevented Lazarus from dying?”

³⁸ Again groaning inwardly, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against the mouth of it.

³⁹ “Move the stone away,” said Jesus. “Master,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time the smell must be offensive, for this is the fourth day since his death.”

⁴⁰ “Didn't I tell you,” replied Jesus, “that, if you would believe in me, you should see the glory of God?”

⁴¹ So they moved the stone away; and Jesus, with uplifted eyes, said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard my prayer;

⁴² I know that you always hear me; but I say this for the sake of the people standing near, so that they may believe that you has sent me as your messenger.”

⁴³ Then, after saying this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus! Come out!”

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, wrapped hand and foot in a winding-sheet; his face, too, had been wrapped in a cloth. “Set him free,” said Jesus, “and let him go.”

⁴⁵ In consequence of this, many of the people, who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did, learnt to believe in him.

⁴⁶ Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees, and told them what he had done.

⁴⁷ The chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the High Council, and said, “What are we to do, now that this man is giving so many signs?

²⁰ When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat quietly at home.

²¹ “Master,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

²² Even now, I know that God will grant you whatever you ask him.”

²³ “Your brother will rise to life,” said Jesus.

²⁴ “I know that he will,” replied Martha, “in the resurrection at the Last day.”

²⁵ “I am the resurrection and the life,” said Jesus. “He who believes in me will live, though he die;

²⁶ and he who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ “Yes Master,” she answered; “I have learned to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

²⁸ After saying this, Martha went and called her sister Mary, and whispered, “The teacher is here, and is asking for you.”

²⁹ As soon as Mary heard that, she got up quickly, and went to meet him.

³⁰ Jesus had not then come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

³¹ So the people, who were in the house with Mary, comforting her, when they saw her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

³² When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she threw herself at his feet. “Master,” she exclaimed, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died!”

²⁵ Yeshua Salvation said to her, “ Ena Na I AM (the Living God) the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah Anointed one, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary Rebellion, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.”

³¹ Then the Jews Praisers who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary Rebellion, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³² Therefore when Mary Rebellion came to where Yeshua Salvation was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

²⁰ Martha assone as she hearde that Iesus was comynge went and met him: but Mary sate still in the housse.

²¹ Then sayde Martha vnto Iesus: Lorde yf thou haddest bene here my brother had not bene deed:

²² but neverthelesse I knowe that whatsoever thou axest of God God will geve it the.

²³ Iesus sayde vnto her: Thy brother shall ryse agayne.

²⁴ Martha sayde vnto him: I knowe that he shall ryse agayne in the resurreccion at the last daye.

²⁵ Iesus sayde vnto her: I am the resurreccion and the lyfe: He that beleveth on me ye though he were deed yet shall he lyve.

²⁶ And whosoever lyveth and belevest on me shall never dye. Beleveth thou this?

²⁷ She sayde vnto him: ye Lorde I beleve that thou arte Christ the sonne of god which shuld come into the worlde.

²⁸ And assone as she had so sayde she went her waye and called Marie her sister secretly sayinge: The master is come and calleth for the

³⁴ Where have ye layed him? They sayde vnto him: Lorde come and se.

⁴⁷ The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

²⁰ Then when Martha heard that Yeshua was coming, she went and met him, but Miriam stayed in the house.

²¹ Therefore Martha said to Yeshua, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.

²² Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”

²³ Yeshua said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

²⁵ Yeshua said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.

²⁶ Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

²⁷ She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”

²⁸ When she had said this, she went away and called Miriam, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Rabbi is here and is calling you.”

²⁹ When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.

³⁰ Now Yeshua had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

³¹ Then the Judeans who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Miriam, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”

³² Therefore when Miriam came to where Yeshua was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”

³³ When Yeshua therefore saw her weeping, and the Judeans weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,

³⁴ and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”

³⁵ Yeshua wept.

³⁶ The Judeans therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”

³⁷ Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”

³⁸ Yeshua therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

³⁹ Yeshua said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

⁴⁰ Yeshua said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”

⁴¹ So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Yeshua lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

⁴² I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”

⁴³ When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”

⁴⁴ He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Yeshua said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Judeans who came to Miriam and saw what Yeshua did believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Yeshua had done.

²⁵ Jesus saith to her, I am again-rising and life; he that believeth in me, yea, though he be dead, he shall live;

²⁶ and each that liveth or all that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die without end. Believest thou this thing?

²⁷ She saith to him, Yea, Lord, I have believed, that thou art Christ, the Son of the living God, that hast come into this world.

²⁸ And when she had said this thing, she went, and called Mary, her sister, in silence, and said, The Master is come, and calleth thee.

²⁹ She, as she heard, arose anon, and came to him.

³⁰ And Jesus came not yet into the castle, but he was yet in that place, where Martha had come to meet him.

³¹ Therefore the Jews that were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose swiftly, and went out, they pursued her, and said, For she goeth to the grave, to weep there.

³² But when Mary was come where Jesus was, she seeing him felled down to his feet, and said to him, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead.

³³ Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping that were with her, he made noise in spirit, and troubled himself,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They said to him, Lord, come, and see.

³⁵ And Jesus wept.

³⁶ Therefore the Jews said, Lo! how he loved him.

³⁷ And some of them said, Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind man, might not make that this should not die?

³⁸ Therefore Jesus again making noise in himself, came to the grave. And there was a den, and a stone was laid thereon.

³⁹ And Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, he stinketh now, for he hath lain four days or soothly he is of four days dead.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Have I not said to thee, that if thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?

⁴¹ Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I do thankings to thee, for thou hast heard me;

⁴² and I wist, that thou evermore hearest me, but for the people that standeth about, I said, that they believe, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ When he had said these things, he cried with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth, or Lazarus, come thou out.

⁴⁴ And anon he that was dead, came out, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face bound with a sudarium, or sweating cloth. And Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him to go forth.

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews that came to Mary and Martha, and saw what things Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees, and said to them, what things Jesus had done.

⁴⁷ Therefore the bishops, and the Pharisees gathered a council against Jesus, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles or signs.

²⁰ Therefore as Martha heard, that Jesus came, she ran to him; but Mary sat at home.

²¹ Therefore Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead, (or Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother would not have died).

²² But now I know, that whatever things thou shalt ask of God, God shall give to thee.

²⁸ And when she had said this thing, she went, and called Mary, her sister, in silence, and said, The Master is come, and calleth thee. (And after she had said this, she went back home, and called aside her sister Mary, and said, The Teacher hath come, and calleth for thee.)

²⁹ She, as she heard, arose anon (or got up at once), and came to him.

³⁰ And Jesus came not yet into the castle (or And Jesus was not yet in the village), but he was yet in that place, where Martha had come to meet him.

³¹ Therefore the Jews that were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose swiftly, and went out, they (pur)sued her (or they followed her), and said, For she goeth to the grave, to weep there.

³² But when Mary was come (to) where Jesus was, she seeing him felled down to his feet, and said to him, Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother had not be dead, (or Lord, if thou haddest been here, my brother would not have died).

³³ Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping that were with her, he made noise in (his) spirit (or he sighed loudly), and (he was) troubled himself,

³⁴ and said, Where have ye laid him? They said to him, Lord, come, and see.

³⁵ And Jesus wept.

³⁶ Therefore the Jews said, Lo! how he loved him.

³⁷ And some of them said, Whether this man that opened the eyes of the born-blind man, might not make that this (man) should not die?

³⁸ Therefore Jesus again making noise in himself, came to the grave. And there was a den, and a stone was laid thereon. (And so Jesus again sighing loudly, came to the tomb. And it was a cave, and a stone was laid against the entrance to it.)

³⁹ And Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him, Lord, he stinketh now, for he hath lain (there) four days or soothly he is of four days dead.

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, Have I not said to thee, that if thou believest, thou shalt see the glory of God?

⁴¹ Therefore they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I do thankings to thee, (or Father, I give thanks to thee), for thou hast heard me;

⁴² and I knew, that thou (for)evermore hearest me, (or and I know, that thou always hearest me), but for the people that standeth about, I said (this), (so) that they believe, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ When he had said these things, he cried with a great voice, Lazarus, come forth, or Lazarus, come thou out.

⁴⁴ And anon he that was dead, came out, bound the hands and feet with bonds, and his face bound with a sudarium, or (a) sweating cloth, (or a napkin). And Jesus saith to them, Unbind ye him, and suffer ye him to go forth. (And at once he who was dead, came out, and his hands and his feet were bound with bonds, and his face was bound with a cloth. And Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and allow him to go forth.)

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews that came to Mary and Martha, and saw what things Jesus did, believed in him.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees, and said to them, what things Jesus had done.

²⁰ Therfor as Martha herde, that Jhesu cam, sche ran to hym; but Mary sat at home.

²¹ Therfor Martha seide to Jhesu, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.

²² But now Y woot, that what euere thingis thou schalt axe of God, God schal yyue to thee.

²³ Jhesus seith to hir, Thi brother schal rise ayen.

²⁴ Martha seith to hym, Y woot, that he schal rise ayen in the ayen risyng in the laste dai.

²⁵ Jhesus seith to hir, Y am ayen risyng and lijf; he that bileueth in me, yhe, thouy he be deed,

²⁶ he schal lyue; and ech that lyueth, and bileueth in me, schal not die with outen ende. Bileuest thou this thing?

²⁷ Sche seith to hym, Yhe, Lord, Y haue bileued, that thou art Crist, the sone of the lyuynge God, that hast come in to this world.

²⁸ And whanne sche hadde seid this thing, sche wente, and clepide Marie, hir sistir, in silence, and seide, The maister cometh, and clepith thee.

²⁹ Sche, as sche herd, aroos anoon, and cam to hym.

³⁰ And Jhesus cam not yit `in to the castel, but he was yit in that place, where Martha hadde comun ayens hym.

³¹ Therfor the Jewis that weren with hir in the hous, and coumfortiden hir, whanne thei sayn Marie, that sche roos swithe, and wente out, thei sueden hir, and seiden, For sche goith to the graue, to wepe there.

³² But whanne Marie was comun where Jhesus was, sche seynge hym felde doun to his feet, and seide to hym, Lord, if thou haddist be here, my brother hadde not be deed.

³³ And therfor whanne Jhesu saiy hir wepyng, and the Jewis wepynge that weren with hir, he `made noise in spirit, and troblide hym silf,

³⁴ and seide, Where han ye leid hym? Thei seien to hym, Lord, come, and se.

³⁵ And Jhesus wepte.

³⁶ Therfor the Jewis seiden, Lo! hou he louede hym.

³⁷ And summe of hem seiden, Whethir this man that openyde the iyen of the borun blynde man, myyte not make that this schulde not die?

³⁸ Therfor Jhesus eft makynge noise in hym silf, cam to the graue. And there was a denne, and a stoon was leid theronne.

³⁹ And Jhesus seith, Take ye awey the stoon. Martha, the sistir of hym that was deed, seith to hym, Lord, he stynkith now, for he hath leye foure daies.

⁴⁰ Jhesus seith to hir, Haue Y not seid to thee, that if thou bileuest, thou schalt se the glorie of God?

⁴¹ Therfor thei token awei the stoon. And Jhesus lifte vp hise iyen, and seide, Fadir, Y do thankyngis to thee, for thou hast herd me; and Y wiste,

⁴² that thou euermore herist me, but for the puple that stondith aboute, Y seide, that thei bileue, that thou hast sent me.

⁴³ Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he criede with a greet vois, Lazarus, come thou forth.

⁴⁴ And anoon he that was deed, cam out, boundun the hondis and feet with boondis, and his face boundun with a sudarie. And Jhesus seith to hem, Vnbynde ye hym, and suffre ye hym to go forth.

⁴⁵ Therfor many of the Jewis that camen to Marie and Martha, and seyn what thingis Jhesus dide, bileueden in hym.

⁴⁶ But summe of hem wente to the Farisees, and seiden to hem, what thingis Jhesus `hadde don.

⁴⁷ Therfor the bischopis and the Farisees gadriden a counsel ayens Jhesu, and seiden, What do we? for this man doith many myraclis.

²⁰ Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

²¹ Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, 'Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

²² but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'

²³ Jesus saith to her, 'Thy brother shall rise again.'

²⁴ Martha saith to him, 'I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'

²⁵ Jesus said to her, 'I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

²⁶ and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die — to the age;

²⁷ believest thou this?' she saith to him, 'Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'

²⁸ And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, 'The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'

²⁹ she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;

³⁰ and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

³¹ the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying — 'She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'

³² Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, 'Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'

³³ Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

³⁴ 'Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, 'Sir, come and see;'

³⁵ Jesus wept.

³⁶ The Jews, therefore, said, 'Lo, how he was loving him!'

³⁸ Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

³⁹ Jesus saith, 'Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died — Martha — saith to him, 'Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'

⁴⁰ Jesus saith to her, 'Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'

⁴¹ They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, 'Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;

⁴² and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said it, that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'

⁴³ And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, 'Lazarus, come forth;'

⁴⁴ and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, 'Loose him, and suffer to go.'

⁴⁵ Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

⁴⁶ but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

⁴⁷ the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, 'What may we do? because this man doth many signs?
