Acts 9:1-5 in English

¹ But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

² and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew nigh unto Damascus: and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven:

⁴ and he fell upon the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:

¹ And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

² And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

³ And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

⁴ And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

¹ But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

² and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew nigh unto Damascus: and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven:

⁴ and he fell upon the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:

¹ Meanwhile, Saul angrily continued to say, “I will kill those who believe that Jesus is the Lord!” He went to the supreme priest in Jerusalem

² and requested him to write letters introducing him to the leaders of MTY the Jewish meeting places in Damascus city. The letters asked them to authorize Saul to seize any men or women who followed the way that Jesus had taught, and to take them as prisoners to Jerusalem so that the Jewish leaders could judge and punish them.

³ Saul took those letters, and while he and those with him traveled toward Damascus, as they were approaching the city, suddenly a brilliant light from heaven shone around Saul.

⁴ Immediately he fell down to the ground. Then he heard the voice of the Lord say to him, “Saul, Saul, ◄stop causing me to suffer!/why are you causing me to suffer?► RHQ”

⁵ Saul asked him, “Lord, who are you?” He replied, “I am Jesus, and you (sg) are causing me to suffer by hurting my followers!

¹ But Saul, still breathing threats and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest

² and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ As he traveled, he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

⁴ He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

⁴ He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

³ As he travelled, he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

⁴ He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

¹ But Saul, still burning with desire to put to death the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

² And made a request for letters from him to the Synagogues of Damascus, so that if there were any of the Way there, men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.

³ And while he was journeying, he came near Damascus; and suddenly he saw a light from heaven shining round him;

⁴ And he went down on the earth, and a voice said to him, Saul, Saul, why are you attacking me so cruelly?

⁵ And he said, Who are you, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus, whom you are attacking:

¹ But Saul, still breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, came to the high priest

² and asked of him letters to Damascus, to the synagogues, so that if he found any who were of the way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ But as he was journeying, it came to pass that he drew near to Damascus; and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven,

⁴ and falling on the earth he heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest.

⁴ And falling on the ground, he heard a voice saying to him: Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ Who said: Who art thou, Lord? And he: I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee to kick against the goad.

¹ Then Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest

² and requested from him letters of authority to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he should find any who were of the Way, both men and women, he might bring them, having been bound, to Jerusalem.

³ And as he was going, it came about that he drew near to Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven.

⁴ And falling on the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”

⁵ And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

¹ Meanwhile Saul, still exhaling murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest

² and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he should find any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ So it happened, as he was going, that he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him;

⁴ and falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

⁵ So he said, “Who are you, Lord?” So the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting;

¹ But meanwhile Saul was making violent threats against the disciples of the Lord, wanting to kill them. He went to the high priest

² and asked for letters of authorization to take with him to the synagogues in Damascus, giving him permission to arrest any believers in the Way that he found, men or women, and bring them back to Jerusalem as prisoners.

³ As Saul approached Damascus, suddenly he was surrounded by a light that blazed down from heaven.

⁴ He fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

⁵ “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, the one you're persecuting,” he replied.

¹ And Saul yet breathing out threatnings and slaughter against the disciples of ye Lord, went vnto the hie Priest,

² And desired of him letters to Damascus to the Synagogues, that if he found any that were of that way (either men or women) hee might bring them bound vnto Hierusalem.

³ Now as he iourneyed, it came to passe that as he was come neere to Damascus, suddenly there shined rounde about him a light from heauen.

⁴ And hee fell to the earth, and heard a voyce, saying to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he sayd, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord sayd, I am Iesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kicke against pricks.

¹ And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

² and desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

³ And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

⁴ and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

² and asked of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any who were of this way of belief, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus; and suddenly there shone around a him a light from heaven;

⁴ and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he answered, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

¹ Meanwhile Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

² and asked him to give him letters to the Jewish congregations at Damascus, authorizing him, if he found there any supporters of the Way, whether men or women, to have them put in chains and brought to Jerusalem.

³ While on his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, suddenly a light from the heavens flashed around him.

⁴ He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him — “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

⁵ “Who are you, Lord?” he asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” the voice answered;

¹ Meanwhile Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

² and asked him to give him letters to the Jewish congregations at Damascus, authorizing him, if he found there any supporters of the Way, whether men or women, to have them put in chains and brought to Jerusalem.

³ While on his journey, as he was nearing Damascus, suddenly a light from the heavens flashed around him.

⁴ He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him — “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

⁵ “Who are you, Lord?” he asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” the voice answered;

¹ At that time Saul was still making trouble for Jesus’s followers. He was telling them, “I’m going to hurt you and kill you.” He went to the big boss of the Jewish ceremonies and asked him, “Will you write letters for me to take to the Jewish people in the town called Damascus? Tell them that you want me to grab anyone there that belongs to that mob called the Jesus Way. I will grab those men, and women too, and tie them up, and bring them back to Jerusalem for you to punish them.” So that big boss wrote a letter like that and gave it to Saul.

³ Then Saul got some men and they went along the road to Damascus. As they got close to that town, suddenly a bright light from heaven shone down on Saul, and it shone all around him.

⁴ He fell down on to the ground, and he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul. Saul. Why are you making trouble for me and hurting me?”

⁵ Saul asked, “Who are you, Boss?” And that voice said, “I am Jesus. You are making trouble for me and hurting me.

¹ And Saul yet brethynge oute threatnynges and slaughter agaynst the disciples of the lorde went vnto the hye preste

² and desyred of him letters to Damasco to the synagoges: that yf he founde eny of this waye whether they were men or wemen he myght bringe them bounde vnto Ierusalem.

³ But as he went on his iorney it fortuned that he drue nye to Damasco and sodenly ther shyned rounde about him a lyght from heven.

⁴ And he fell to the erth and hearde a voyce sayinge to him: Saul Saul why persecutest thou me?

⁵ And he sayde what arte thou lorde? And the lorde sayd I am Iesus whom thou persecutest it shalbe harde for the to kycke agaynst the pricke.

¹ But Saul, still speaking threats even of murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest

² and asked him for letters for the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ As he was traveling, it happened that as he came near to Damascus, suddenly there shone all around him a light out of heaven;

⁴ and he fell upon the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

⁵ Saul replied, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting;

² and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ As he travelled, he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him.

⁴ He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵ He said, “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord said, “I am Yeshua, whom you are persecuting.

¹ But Saul, yet a blower or a breather of menaces, and of beatings, or slaying, against the disciples of the Lord, came to the prince of priests,

² and asked of him letters into Damascus, to the synagogues; that if he found any men or women of this life, he should lead them bound to Jerusalem.

³ And when he made his journey, it befelled, that he came nigh to Damascus. And suddenly a light from heaven shone about him;

⁴ and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, what persecutest or pursuest thou me?

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest or pursuest. It is hard to thee, to kick against the prick.

¹ But Saul, yet a blower or a breather of menaces, and of beatings, or slaying(s), against the disciples of the Lord, came to the prince of (the) priests, (But Saul, still a breather of threats, and killings, against the disciples of the Lord, came to the High Priest,)

² and asked of (or from) him letters into Damascus, to the synagogues; that if he found any men or women of this life, he should lead them bound (back) to Jerusalem.

³ And when he made his journey, it befelled, that he came nigh to Damascus. And suddenly a light from heaven shone about him;

⁴ and he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, what pursuest thou me? (or Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?)

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou pursuest. It is hard to thee, to kick against the prick. (And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. It is hard for thee, to kick against the prod.)

¹ And Saul, yet breathing of threatening and slaughter to the disciples of the Lord, having gone to the chief priest,

² did ask from him letters to Damascus, unto the synagogues, that if he may find any being of the way, both men and women, he may bring them bound to Jerusalem.

³ And in the going, he came nigh to Damascus, and suddenly there shone round about him a light from the heaven,

⁴ and having fallen upon the earth, he heard a voice saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why me dost thou persecute?'

⁵ And he said, 'Who art thou, Lord?' and the Lord said, 'I am Jesus whom thou dost persecute; hard for thee at the pricks to kick;'
