John 7:2-52 in English

² Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.

³ His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may behold thy works which thou doest.

⁴ For no man doeth anything in secret, and himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.

⁵ For even his brethren did not believe on him.

⁶ Jesus therefore saith unto them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.

⁸ Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.

⁹ And having said these things unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brethren were gone up unto the feast, then went he also up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

¹¹ The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

¹² And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.

¹³ Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁵ The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

¹⁶ Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you doeth the law? Why seek ye to kill me?

²⁰ The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?

²¹ Jesus answered and said unto them, I did one work, and ye all marvel because thereof.

²² Moses hath given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and on the sabbath ye circumcise a man.

²³ If a man receiveth circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye wroth with me, because I made a man every whit whole on the sabbath?

²⁴ Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁵ Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ And lo, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing unto him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ?

²⁷ Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.

²⁸ Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

²⁹ I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me.

³⁰ They sought therefore to take him: and no man laid his hand on him, because his hour was not yet come.

³¹ But of the multitude many believed on him; and they said, When the Christ shall come, will he do more signs than those which this man hath done?

³² The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to take him.

³³ Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while am I with you, and I go unto him that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come.

³⁵ The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go that we shall not find him? will he go unto the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this word that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?

³⁷ Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.

³⁹ But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴⁰ Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, What, doth the Christ come out of Galilee?

⁴² Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?

⁴³ So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.

⁴⁴ And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

⁴⁵ The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why did ye not bring him?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man so spake.

⁴⁷ The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray?

⁴⁸ Hath any of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

⁴⁹ But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus saith unto them (he that came to him before, being one of them),

⁵¹ Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?

⁵² They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

² Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was near.

³ Therefore His brothers told Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your disciples will see the works that You are doing, too.

⁴ Nobody does anything in secret while he seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

⁵ For even His brothers didn’t believe in Him.

⁶ Then Jesus told them, “My time hasn’t yet come, but your time is always right.

⁷ The world can’t hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are evil.

⁸ Go up to this feast yourselves. I’m not going up to this feast, yet, for my time hasn’t yet fully come.”

⁹ Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰ When His brothers had gone up to the feast, however, Jesus also went up, not publicly, but in secret.

¹¹ The Jews were looking for Him at the feast, and saying, “Where is He?”

¹² There was much complaining among the people about Him. Some said, “He is good,” but others said, “No, He deceives the people.”

¹³ No one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ About the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.

¹⁵ The Jews marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”

¹⁶ Jesus answered, “My teaching isn’t mine, but His who sent me.

¹⁷ Anyone who wants to do His will shall know if the teaching is from God or if I speak on my own.

¹⁸ The one who speaks on his own seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

¹⁹ Didn’t Moses give you the Law, yet none of you keeps the Law? Why are you trying to kill me?”

²⁰ The people answered, “You have a demon. Who is trying to kill You?”

²¹ Jesus answered, “I did one work, and you all marvel.

²² Moses gave you circumcision (not that it’s from Moses, but from the forefathers), and you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath.

²³ If a boy gets circumcised on the Sabbath, so that the Law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Don’t judge by appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

²⁵ Some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill?

²⁶ Look! He is speaking boldly, and they say nothing to Him. The rulers haven’t really concluded that this is the Christ, have they?

²⁷ Still, we know where this man is from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”

²⁸ Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I’m from. I haven’t come of my own accord, but He who sent me is true, who you don’t know.

²⁹ I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent me.”

³⁰ Because of this, they were seeking to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him, because His time had not yet come.

³¹ Many of the people believed in Him, saying, “When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than this man has done?”

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Jesus, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to seize Him.

³³ Then Jesus told them, “I will be with you a little while longer, and then I am going to Him who sent me.

³⁴ You will look for me, and not find me, and where I am, you can’t come.”

³⁵ Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does He intend to go that we won’t be able to find Him? He doesn’t intend to go to the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does He?

³⁶ What does He mean by saying, ‘You will look for me, and not find me, and where I am, you can’t come’?”

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and declared loudly, “If anyone is thirsty, let that person come to me and drink.

³⁸ Rivers of living water will flow from within whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said.”

³⁹ He said this about the Spirit, who those believing in Him would receive. The Holy Spirit wasn’t yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, many in the crowd were saying, “This is really the prophet.”

⁴¹ Others were saying, “This is the Christ,” but some were saying, “Surely the Christ isn’t going to come from Galilee, is He?

⁴² Hasn’t the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

⁴³ So there was a division among the crowd because of Jesus.

⁴⁴ Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

⁴⁵ When the officers went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, they asked them, “Why didn’t you bring Him in?”

⁴⁶ The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered, “You haven’t been deceived, too, have you?

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?

⁴⁹ But this accursed crowd doesn’t know the Law.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus (who came to Jesus before, being one of them) asked them,

⁵¹ “Does our Law permit us to judge a man before hearing him and finding out what he is doing?”

⁵² They answered him, “You aren’t from Galilee, too, are you? Search and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”

⁷ The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

⁸ Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.

⁹ When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

¹¹ Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

¹² And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

¹³ Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁵ And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

¹⁶ Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

²⁰ The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

²¹ Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

²² Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

²³ If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁵ Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

²⁷ Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

²⁸ Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

²⁹ But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

³⁰ Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

³¹ And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

³² The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

³³ Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

³⁵ Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

³⁶ What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

³⁷ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

³⁹ (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

⁴⁰ Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?

⁴² Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

⁴³ So there was a division among the people because of him.

⁴⁴ And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

⁴⁵ Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

² But when the time of the Jewish celebration called ❛Celebration of Living in Shelters❜ was near,

³ Jesus' younger brothers said to him, “ Since many people here have left you, you should leave and go to Judea province and perform some miracles there, so that your disciples may see them!

⁴ No one who wants to become famous does things secretly. You say you are doing these miracles, so do some miracles there so that everyone MTY can see them!”

⁵ They said this critically, because even though they were his own younger brothers, they did not believe he was from God.

⁶ So Jesus said to them, “It is not yet time for me MTY to go to the celebration. For you, any time is right to go to the celebration.

⁷ The people MTY who ◄ do not believe in me/do not belong to God► cannot hate you, but they hate me because I tell them that what they are doing is evil.

⁸ You (pl) go ahead to the celebration. I am not going up to Jerusalem to the celebration yet, because now is not the right time for me to go.”

⁹ After he said that, Jesus stayed a little longer in Galilee.

¹⁰ However, a few days after his younger brothers left to go up to the celebration, he went also. He went, along with us disciples, but no others went with us.

¹¹ At the celebration, the Jewish leaders were looking for him. They were asking people, “Has Jesus come?”

¹² Among the crowds, many people were whispering about Jesus. Some were saying, “He is a good man!” But others were saying instead, “No! He is deceiving the crowds!”

¹³ But no one was speaking so that others could hear them, because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders SYN.

¹⁴ In the middle of the days of the celebration, Jesus went to the Temple courtyard and began to teach people.

¹⁵ The Jewish elders were amazed at what he was saying. They said, “This man never studied in one of our religious schools! So ◄how can he have learned so much about Scripture?/it is difficult for us to believe that he has learned so much about Scripture!► RHQ”

¹⁶ Jesus replied to them, “What I teach does not come from myself. It comes from God, the one who sent me.

¹⁷ Those who choose to do what God wants will find out whether what I teach comes from God or whether I am speaking with only my own authority.

¹⁸ Those who speak with only their own authority do that only so that others will honor them. But I am doing things so that others will honor the one who sent me, and I am someone who speaks the truth. I never lie.

¹⁹ Think about the laws that Moses gave you RHQ. None of you completely obeys those laws. So why are you trying to kill me, saying I do not obey the laws concerning ◄ the Sabbath/the Jewish day of rest►?”

²⁰ Someone in the crowd answered, “ By saying this you show that you are crazy (OR, A demon is controlling you)! Certainly no one is trying to kill you!”

²¹ Jesus replied to them, “Because I did a miracle of healing someone ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►, you are all shocked.

²² Moses gave you a law that you must circumcise the male children and that you must do that exactly seven days after they are born. Actually, it was your ancestors, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, not Moses, who started that ritual. But because of that law, you sometimes circumcise them ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day►, but that is working, too

²³ You sometimes circumcise boys ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day► so that the law of Moses is not disobeyed { you do not disobey the law of Moses}, so ◄it is ridiculous that you are angry with me, saying I worked ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day► by healing a man!/why are you angry with me, saying I worked ◄on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day► by healing a man?► RHQ Healing someone is far more helpful than circumcising a baby boy!

²⁴ Stop deciding whether my healing this man is wrong according to what you see! Instead, decide according to what is really the right action to help people”!

²⁵ Some of the people from Jerusalem were saying, “◄This is the man that they are trying to kill!/Isn't this the man that they are trying to kill?► RHQ

²⁶ He is saying these things ◄publicly/in front of many people►, but our Jewish rulers are not saying anything to oppose him. Is that because they have decided that he is truly ◄the Messiah/God's chosen king►?

²⁷ But he cannot be the Messiah, because we know where this man came from. When the Messiah really comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

²⁸ They said that because they thought Jesus was born in Nazareth. So while Jesus was teaching people in the Temple courtyard, he shouted, “Yes, you say that you know me, and you think you know IRO where I am from. But I have come here not ◄because I appointed myself/with my own authority►. Instead, God is the one who truly sent me. You do not know him.

²⁹ But I know him, because I have come from him. He is the one who sent me!”

³⁰ Then they tried to seize him because he said that he had come from God. But no one put their hands on him to do that, because it was not yet the time MTY for him to die.

³¹ But many of the crowd believed that he had come from God. They said, “When the Messiah comes, he certainly will not do more miracles than this man has done, will he?”

³² The Pharisees heard them whispering these things about him. So they and the chief priests sent some Temple guards to seize him.

³³ Then Jesus said, “I will be with you for only a short time. Then I will return to the one who sent me.

³⁴ Then you will search for me, but you will not find me. And you will not be able to come to the place where I am.”

³⁵ So the Jewish leaders SYN said to themselves, “Where is this man about to go with the result that we will not be able to find him? Some Jewish people have dispersed and live among Greek people. He is not intending to go and live among them and teach them, is he?

³⁶ When he said ‘You will search for me, but you will not be able to find me,’ and when he said ‘You will not be able to come to the place where I am,’ what did he mean?”

³⁷ On each of the seven days of the celebration, the high priest poured out some water on the altar in the Temple to remember how God provided water for the people in the desolate area long ago. But the water he poured did not help anyone who was thirsty. So on the last day of the festival, which was the most important day, Jesus stood up in the Temple courtyard and said with a loud voice, “Those who are thirsty should come to me to drink what I will give them.

³⁸ Just like the Scriptures teach, streams of water shall flow out from within those who believe in me, and that water will cause them to live eternally.”

³⁹ When Jesus said that, he was referring to God's Spirit, whom those who believed in Jesus would receive later. Up to that time God had not sent the Spirit to live within believers, because Jesus had not yet died and returned to his glorious home in heaven, from where he would send the Spirit.

⁴⁰ When some of the crowd heard those words, they said, “Surely this man is the prophet whom God promised to send who would be like Moses!”

⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah!” But others, thinking Jesus was born in Galilee, said, “The Messiah will not come from Galilee province, will he?

⁴² ◄Did a prophet not write in the Scriptures that the Messiah will come from King David's family, and be born in Bethlehem, where King David lived?/ It is written in the Scriptures that the Messiah will come from King David's family, and be born in Bethlehem, where King David lived!► RHQ”

⁴³ So the people were divided because of what they thought about Jesus.

⁴⁴ Some people wanted to seize him, but no one tried to do that.

⁴⁵ So the Temple guards returned to the chief priests and the Pharisees, the ones who had sent them to arrest Jesus. They said to the guards, “Why did you not seize him and bring him here?”

⁴⁶ They replied, “No one ever spoke such amazing things as this man does!”

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees replied, “Have you been deceived {Has he deceived you}, too?

⁴⁸ ◄None of our rulers nor any of us Pharisees have believed that ‘he is the Messiah!/he came from God!’/Have any of our Jewish rulers or any of us Pharisees believed that ‘he is the Messiah?/he came from God?’► RHQ

⁴⁹ Not one! But, on the contrary, some of this crowd have believed in him. They do not know the true teachings of our laws! They will go to hell for listening to him!”

⁵⁰ Then Nicodemus spoke. He was the one who earlier went to Jesus at night. He was also a member of the Jewish council. He said to the rest of the Council members,

⁵¹ “ We have not listened to what he says to find out what he is doing. ◄It is not permitted in our Jewish law PRS for us to say, before questioning someone, that we must punish him!/Is it permitted in our Jewish law PRS for us to say, before questioning someone, that we must punish him?► RHQ”

⁵² They replied to him, “◄Are you another disgusting person from Galilee?/ You talk like another disgusting person from Galilee!► RHQ Read what is written in the Scriptures You will find that no prophet comes from Galilee province, like he does!”

³ His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.

⁴ For no one does anything in secret while he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.”

⁵ For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.

⁶ Jesus therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

⁸ You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.”

⁹ Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

¹¹ The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, “Where is he?”

¹² There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Not so, but he leads the multitude astray.”

¹³ Yet no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.

¹⁵ The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”

¹⁶ Jesus therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

¹⁷ If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or if I am speaking from myself.

¹⁸ He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁹ Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill me?”

²⁰ The multitude answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill you?”

²¹ Jesus answered them, “I did one work and you all marvel because of it.

²² Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy.

²³ If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

²⁵ Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Christ?

²⁷ However, we know where this man comes from, but when the Christ comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

²⁸ Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.

²⁹ I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or any of the Pharisees believed in him?

⁴⁹ But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is cursed.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them,

⁵¹ “Does our law judge a man unless it first hears from him personally and knows what he does?”

⁵² They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

⁴ Because no man does things secretly if he has a desire that men may have knowledge of him. If you do these things, let yourself be seen by all men.

⁵ For even his brothers had no belief in him.

⁶ Jesus said to them, My time is still to come, but any time is good for you.

⁷ It is not possible for you to be hated by the world; but I am hated by it, because I give witness that what it does is evil.

⁸ Go you up to the feast: I am not going up now to the feast because my time has not fully come.

⁹ Having said these things to them, he still kept in Galilee.

¹⁰ But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he went up, not publicly, but in secret.

¹¹ At the feast the Jews were looking for him and saying, Where is he?

¹² And there was much discussion about him among the mass of the people. Some said, He is a good man; but others said, No, he is giving people false ideas.

¹³ But no man said anything about him openly for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now in the middle of the feast Jesus went up to the Temple and was teaching.

¹⁵ Then the Jews were surprised and said, How has this man got knowledge of books? He has never been to school.

¹⁶ Jesus gave them this answer: It is not my teaching, but his who sent me.

¹⁷ If any man is ready to do God's pleasure he will have knowledge of the teaching and of where it comes from — from God or from myself.

¹⁸ The man whose words come from himself is looking for glory for himself, but he who is looking for the glory of him who sent him — that man is true and there is no evil in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law? Even so, not one of you keeps the law. Why have you a desire to put me to death?

²⁰ The people said in answer, You have an evil spirit: who has any desire to put you to death?

²¹ This was the answer of Jesus: I have done one work and you are all surprised at it.

²² Moses gave you circumcision — not that it comes from Moses, but from the fathers — and even on the Sabbath you give a child circumcision.

²³ If a child is given circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Let not your decisions be based on what you see, but on righteousness.

²⁵ Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, Is not this the man whose death is desired?

²⁶ And here he is talking openly and they say nothing to him! Is it possible that the rulers have knowledge that this is truly the Christ?

²⁷ However, it is clear to us where this man comes from: but when the Christ comes no one will have knowledge where he comes from.

²⁸ Then, when he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus said with a loud voice, You have knowledge of me and you have knowledge of where I come from; and I have not come of myself; but there is One who has sent me; he is true, but you have no knowledge of him.

²⁹ I have knowledge of him because I came from him and he sent me.

³⁰ Then they had a desire to take him: but no man put hands on him because his hour was still to come.

³¹ And numbers of the people had belief in him, and they said, When the Christ comes will he do more signs than this man has done?

³² This discussion of the people came to the ears of the Pharisees; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants to take him.

³³ Then Jesus said, I will be with you a little longer and then I go to him who sent me.

³⁴ You will be looking for me, and you will not see me: and where I am you may not come.

³⁵ So the Jews said among themselves, To what place is he going where we will not see him? will he go to the Jews living among the Greeks and become the teacher of the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this saying of his, You will be looking for me and will not see me, and where I am you may not come?

³⁷ On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus got up and said in a loud voice, If any man is in need of drink let him come to me and I will give it to him.

³⁸ He who has faith in me, out of his body, as the Writings have said, will come rivers of living water.

³⁹ This he said of the Spirit which would be given to those who had faith in him: the Spirit had not been given then, because the glory of Jesus was still to come.

⁴⁰ When these words came to their ears, some of the people said, This is certainly the prophet.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. But others said, Not so; will the Christ come from Galilee?

⁴² Do not the Writings say that the Christ comes of the seed of David and from Beth-lehem, the little town where David was?

⁴³ So there was a division among the people because of him.

⁴⁴ And some of them had a desire to take him; but no man put hands on him.

⁴⁵ Then the servants went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not got him with you?

⁴⁶ The servants made answer, No man ever said things like this man.

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees said to them, Have you, like the others, been given false ideas?

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers belief in him, or any one of the Pharisees?

⁴⁹ But these people who have no knowledge of the law are cursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus — he who had come to Jesus before, being himself one of them — said to them,

⁵¹ Is a man judged by our law before it has given him a hearing and has knowledge of what he has done?

⁵² This was their answer: And do you come from Galilee? Make search and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.

² Now the tabernacles, the feast of the Jews, was near.

³ His brethren therefore said to him, Remove hence and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou doest;

⁴ for no one does anything in secret and himself seeks to be known in public. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world:

⁵ for neither did his brethren believe on him.

¹⁸ He that speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but he that seeks the glory of him that has sent him, he is true, and unrighteousness is not in him.

¹⁹ Has not Moses given you the law, and no one of you practises the law? Why do ye seek to kill me?

²⁰ The crowd answered and said, Thou hast a demon: who seeks to kill thee?

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all wonder.

²⁷ But as to this man we know whence he is. Now as to the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is.

²⁸ Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know.

³⁶ What word is this which he said, Ye shall seek me and shall not find me; and where I am ye cannot come?

³⁹ But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believed on him were about to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

⁴⁰ Some out of the crowd therefore, having heard this word, said, This is truly the prophet.

⁴¹ Others said, This is the Christ. Others said, Does then the Christ come out of Galilee?

⁴² Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes of the seed of David, and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?

⁴³ There was a division therefore in the crowd on account of him.

⁴⁴ But some of them desired to take him, but no one laid hands upon him.

⁴⁵ The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man spoke thus, as this man speaks.

⁴⁷ The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also deceived?

⁴⁸ Has any one of the rulers believed on him, or of the Pharisees?

⁴⁹ But this crowd, which does not know the law, are accursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus says to them (being one of themselves),

⁵¹ Does our law judge a man before it have first heard from himself, and know what he does?

⁵² They answered and said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and look, that no prophet arises out of Galilee.

² Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

³ And his brethren said to him: Pass from hence, and go into Judea; that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou dost.

⁴ For there is no man that doth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, manifest thyself to the world.

⁵ For neither did his brethren believe in him.

⁶ Then Jesus said to them: My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth: because I give testimony of it, that the works thereof are evil.

⁸ Go you up to this festival day, but I go not up to this festival day: because my time is not accomplished.

⁹ When he had said these things, he himself stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰ But after his brethren were gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but, as it were, in secret.

¹¹ The Jews therefore sought him on the festival day, and said: Where is he?

¹² And there was much murmuring among the multitude concerning him. For some said: He is a good man. And others said: No, but he seduceth the people.

¹³ Yet no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁵ And the Jews wondered, saying: How doth this man know letters, having never learned?

¹⁶ Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man do the will of him; he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no injustice in him.

¹⁹ Did Moses not give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law?

²⁰ Why seek you to kill me? The multitude answered, and said: Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to kill thee?

²¹ Jesus answered, and said to them: One work I have done; and you all wonder:

²² Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man.

²³ If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are you angry at me because I have healed the whole man on the sabbath day?

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge just judgment.

²⁵ Some therefore of Jerusalem said: Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers known for a truth, that this is the Christ?

²⁷ But we know this man, whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

²⁸ Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching, and saying: You both know me, and you know whence I am: and I am not come of myself; but he that sent me, is true, whom you know not.

²⁹ I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.

³⁰ They sought therefore to apprehend him: and no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

³¹ But of the people many believed in him, and said: When the Christ cometh, shall he do more miracles, than these which this man doth?

³² The Pharisees heard the people murmuring these things concerning him: and the rulers and Pharisees sent ministers to apprehend him.

³³ Jesus therefore said to them: Yet a little while I am with you: and then I go to him that sent me.

³⁴ You shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither you cannot come.

³⁵ The Jews therefore said among themselves: Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

³⁶ What is this saying that he hath said: You shall seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, you cannot come?

³⁷ And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

³⁹ Now this he said of the Spirit which they should receive, who believed in him: for as yet the Spirit was not given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

² Now the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.

³ His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see the works that You do.

⁴ For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

⁵ For not even His brothers believed in Him.

⁶ Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

⁸ You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled.”

⁹ When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when His brothers had gone up, then also He Himself went up to the feast, not openly, but in private.

¹¹ Then the Jews were seeking Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”

¹² And there was much murmuring among the crowds concerning Him. Some on the one hand were saying, “He is a good Man”; while others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.”

¹³ However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ But now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.

¹⁵ And the Jews were marveling, saying, “How has this Man become learned, since He has not been educated?”

¹⁶ Therefore Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

¹⁷ If anyone desires to do His will, he will know about the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I am speaking on My own authority.

¹⁸ He who speaks from himself is seeking his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

¹⁹ Has not Moses given you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why are you seeking to kill Me?”

²⁰ The crowd answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel.

²² Because of this Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

²³ If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

²⁵ Therefore some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not He whom they are seeking to kill?

²⁶ And look! He is speaking publicly, and they say nothing to Him. Can it be that the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Messiah?

²⁷ However, we know where this Man is from; but whenever the Messiah comes, no one knows where He is from.”

²⁸ Therefore Jesus cried out, as He was teaching in the temple, saying, “You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of my own accord, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

²⁹ I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

³⁰ Therefore they were seeking to arrest Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

³¹ But many of the crowd believed in Him, and were saying, “When the Messiah comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?”

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent attendants so that they might arrest Him.

³³ Then Jesus said, “Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go to Him who sent Me.

³⁴ You will seek Me and you will not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.”

³⁵ Therefore the Jews said among themselves, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? Does He intend to go into the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this thing which He said, ‘You will seek Me and you will not find Me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

³⁷ Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

³⁸ He that believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.”

³⁹ (But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified).

⁴⁰ Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.”

⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Messiah.” Others said, “Surely the Messiah is not to come out of Galilee, is He?

⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Messiah comes from the seed of David and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?”

⁴³ Therefore a division occurred among the crowd because of Him.

⁴⁴ Now some of them wished to arrest Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

⁴⁵ Then the attendants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”

⁴⁶ The attendants answered them, “No man ever spoke like this Man!”

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived?

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

⁴⁹ But this crowd which does not know the law is accursed.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus (he who came to Him by night, being one of them) said to them,

⁵¹ “Does our law judge a man before it hears from him first, and knows what he is doing?”

⁵² They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see, because no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”

² Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was near.

³ So His brothers said to Him: “Leave here and go up into Judea so your disciples also may see the works that you are doing,

⁴ because no one does anything in secret while he actually wants to be in evidence. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world!”

⁵ For not even His brothers were believing into Him.

⁶ So Jesus says to them: “My time is not here yet, but your time is always available.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but does hate me, because I testify about it that its works are malignant.

⁸ You guys go up to this feast; I am not going up yet to this feast, because my time has not yet fully come.”

⁹ So upon saying these things to them He stayed on in Galilee.

¹⁰ Now when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He too went up, not openly but in secret like.

¹¹ So the Jews were looking for Him at the feast and saying, “Where is he?”

¹² And there was a lot of murmuring about Him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He is good”; others were saying, “On the contrary, he's deceiving the people.”

¹³ However, no one was talking openly about Him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now when the feast was already half over Jesus went up into the temple and started to teach.

¹⁵ And the Jews were marveling saying, “How is this man learned, not having been educated?”

¹⁶ So Jesus answered them and said: “What I teach is not mine, but His who sent me.

¹⁷ If anyone wants to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.

¹⁸ Someone who speaks on his own is seeking his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

¹⁹ “Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law! Why do you want to kill me?”

²⁰ The crowd answered and said, “You must have a demon! Who wants to kill you?”

²² Consider this: Moses gave you circumcision (not that it comes from Moses, but from the patriarchs), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

²⁴ Stop judging on the basis of appearances, but judge the righteous judgment.”

²⁵ Now some of the Jerusalemites were saying: “Isn't this the man they are wanting to kill?

²⁶ Yet look! He is speaking openly and they are saying nothing to Him. Could it be true that the rulers know that this is really the Christ?

²⁷ On the other hand, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ comes nobody knows where He is from.”

²⁸ So Jesus called out in the temple, teaching and saying: “You do know me, and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the One who sent me is true, whom you do not know.

²⁹ I do know Him because I am from Him, and He sent me.”

³⁰ So they tried to arrest Him, yet no one laid a hand on Him because His hour had not yet come.

³¹ Now many of the crowd were believing into Him, and they were saying, “Whenever the Christ comes He won't perform more signs than these which this man has done, will He?”

³² The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, so the Pharisees and the chief priests sent operatives to arrest Him.

³³ Then Jesus said: “For a little while I am still with you, and then I go to the One who sent me.

³⁴ You will look for me and not find me; also, where I am you cannot come.”

³⁵ So the Jews said among themselves: “Where does this fellow intend to go that we won't find him? He doesn't intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he?

³⁶ What word is this that he spoke, ‘You will look for me and not find me’; also, ‘where I am you cannot come’?”

³⁷ Now on the last and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood up and called out saying: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

³⁸ The one believing into me, just as the Scripture has said, out from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.”

³⁹ (Now He said this about the Spirit, whom those believing into Him were going to receive, in that the Holy Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified.)

⁴⁰ So upon hearing this word many from the crowd began to say, “This One really is ‘the Prophet’!”

⁴¹ Others were saying, “This One is the Christ!” Others were saying: “Surely the Christ isn't coming out of Galilee, is He?

⁴² Doesn't the Scripture say that the Christ comes out of the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”

⁴³ So there developed a division in the crowd because of Him.

⁴⁴ Further, some of them were wanting to arrest Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

⁴⁵ Then the operatives came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why haven't you brought him?”

⁴⁶ The operatives answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”

⁴⁷ So the Pharisees answered them: “You haven't been fooled too, have you?

⁴⁸ None of the rulers or the Pharisees have believed into him, have they?

⁴⁹ But this crowd that doesn't know the law is accursed!”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus (the one who came to Him at night, being one of them) says to them,

⁵¹ “Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing, does it?”

⁵² They answered and said to him: “You aren't from Galilee too, are you? Search and see that no prophet has ever arisen out of Galilee.”

² But as it was almost time for the Jewish festival of the Tabernacles,

³ his brothers told him, “You ought to leave and go to Judea so your followers will be able to see what miracles you can do.

⁴ No one who wants to be famous keeps what they do hidden. If you can do such miracles, then show yourself to the world!”

⁵ For even his own brothers really didn't believe in him.

⁶ Jesus told them, “This is not my time to go, not yet; but you can go whenever you want, for any time's the right time for you.

⁷ The world has no reason to hate you, but it does hate me, because I make it clear that its ways are evil.

⁸ You go on to the festival. I'm not going to this festival because this is not the right time for me, not yet.”

⁹ After saying this he stayed behind in Galilee.

¹⁰ After his brothers left to go to the festival, Jesus also went, but not openly—he stayed out of sight.

¹¹ Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were searching for him and kept on asking, “Where is he?”

¹² Many people in the crowds were complaining about him. Some said, “He's a good man,” while others argued, “No! He deceives people.”

¹³ But no one dared to speak openly about him because they were afraid of what the Jewish leaders would do to them.

¹⁴ When the festival was halfway through Jesus went to the Temple and began to teach.

¹⁵ The Jewish leaders were very surprised, and asked, “How does this man have so much learning when he hasn't been educated?”

¹⁶ Jesus answered, “My teaching is not from me but from the one who sent me.

¹⁷ Anyone who chooses to follow what God wants will know if my teaching comes from God or if I'm only speaking for myself.

¹⁸ Those who speak for themselves want to glorify themselves, but someone who glorifies the one who sent him is truthful and not deceitful.

¹⁹ Moses gave you the law, didn't he? Yet none of you keeps the law! Why are you trying to kill me?”

²⁰ “You're demon-possessed!” the crowd replied. “No one's trying to kill you!”

²¹ “I did one miracle and you're all shocked by it,” Jesus replied.

²² “However, because Moses told you to circumcise—not that it really came from Moses, but from your forefathers before him—you perform circumcision on the Sabbath.

²³ If you circumcise on the Sabbath to make sure that the law of Moses isn't broken, why are you angry with me for healing someone on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Don't judge by appearances; decide what is right!”

²⁵ Then some of those from Jerusalem began wondering, “Isn't this the one they're trying to kill?

²⁶ But see how openly he's speaking, and they're saying nothing to him. Do you think the authorities believe he's the Messiah?

²⁷ But that's not possible because we know where he comes from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he's from.”

²⁸ While he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus called out in a loud voice, “So you think you know me and where I'm from? However, I did not come for my own sake. The one who sent me is true. You don't know him,

²⁹ but I know him, for I come from him, and he sent me.”

³⁰ So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him because his time had not yet come.

³¹ However, many of the crowd did put their trust in him. “When the Messiah appears, will he do more miraculous signs than this man has done?” they said.

³² When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering this about him, they and the chief priests sent guards to arrest Jesus.

³³ Then Jesus told the people, “I'll be with you just a little longer, but then I'll return to the one who sent me.

³⁴ You'll search for me but you won't find me; and you can't come where I'm going.”

³⁵ The Jews said to each other, “Where could he be going that we couldn't find him? Is he planning to go to those scattered among the foreigners, and teach the foreigners?

³⁶ What does he mean by saying, ‘You'll search for me but you won't find me; and you can't come where I'm going’?”

³⁷ On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted out in a loud voice, “If you're thirsty, come to me and drink.

³⁸ If you trust in me, you will have streams of life-giving water flowing out from within you, as Scripture says.”

³⁹ He was referring to the Spirit that those who trusted in him would later receive. The Spirit hadn't been given yet because Jesus hadn't yet been glorified.

⁴⁰ When they heard these words, some of the people said, “This man is definitely the Prophet!”

⁴¹ Others said, “He is the Messiah!” Still others said, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?

⁴² Doesn't Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's lineage, and from David's home town of Bethlehem?”

⁴³ So the crowd had a strong difference of opinion about him.

⁴⁴ Some wanted to arrest him, but nobody laid a hand on him.

⁴⁵ Then the guards returned to the chief priests and the Pharisees who asked them, “Why didn't you bring him in?”

⁴⁶ “Nobody ever spoke like this man does,” the guards replied.

⁴⁷ “Have you been fooled too?” the Pharisees asked them.

⁴⁸ “Has a single one of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him? No!

⁴⁹ But this crowd that knows nothing about teachings of the law—they're damned anyway!”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus, who had previously gone to meet Jesus, was one of them and asked them,

⁵¹ “Does our law condemn a man without a hearing and without finding out what he actually did?”

⁵² “So you're a Galilean as well, are you?” they replied. “Check the Scriptures and you'll discover that no prophet comes from Galilee!”

² Nowe the Iewes feast of the Tabernacles was at hande.

³ His brethren therefore sayde vnto him, Depart hence, and goe into Iudea, that thy disciples may see thy woorkes that thou doest.

⁴ For there is no man that doeth any thing secretely, and hee himselfe seeketh to be famous. If thou doest these things, shewe thy selfe to the worlde.

⁵ For as yet his brethren beleeued not in him.

⁶ Then Iesus saide vnto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway readie.

⁷ The world can not hate you: but me it hateth, because I testifie of it, that the workes thereof are euill.

⁸ Go ye vp vnto this feast: I wil not go vp yet vnto this feast: for my time is not yet fulfilled.

⁹ These things he sayde vnto them, and abode still in Galile.

¹⁰ But assoone as his brethren were gone vp, then went hee also vp vnto the feast, not openly, but as it were priuilie.

¹¹ Then the Iewes sought him at the feast, and saide, Where is hee?

¹² And much murmuring was there of him among the people. Some said, He is a good man: other sayd, Nay: but he deceiueth the people.

¹³ Howbeit no man spake openly of him for feare of the Iewes.

¹⁴ Nowe when halfe the feast was done, Iesus went vp into the Temple and taught.

¹⁵ And the Iewes marueiled, saving, Howe knoweth this man the Scriptures, seeing that hee neuer learned!

¹⁶ Iesus answered them, and saide, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man will doe his will, he shall knowe of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speake of my selfe.

¹⁸ Hee that speaketh of himselfe, seeketh his owne glorie: but hee that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no vnrighteousnes is in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses giue you a Law, and yet none of you keepeth the lawe? Why goe ye about to kill me?

²⁰ The people answered, and said, Thou hast a deuil: who goeth about to kill thee?

²¹ Iesus answered, and saide to them, I haue done one worke, and ye all maruaile.

²² Moses therefore gaue vnto you circumcision, (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise a man.

²³ If a man on the Sabbath receiue circumcision, that the Lawe of Moses should not be broken, be ye angrie with me, because I haue made a man euery whit whole on the Sabbath day?

²⁴ Iudge not according to the appearance, but iudge righteous iudgement.

²⁵ Then saide some of them of Hierusalem, Is not this he, whom they goe about to kill?

²⁶ And beholde, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him: doe the rulers know in deede that this is in deede that Christ?

²⁷ Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when that Christ commeth, no man shall knowe whence he is.

²⁸ Then cried Iesus in the Temple as hee taught, saying, Ye both knowe mee, and knowe whence I am: yet am I not come of my selfe, but he that sent me, is true, whome ye knowe not.

²⁹ But I knowe him: for I am of him, and he hath sent me.

³⁰ Then they sought to take him, but no man layde handes on him, because his houre was not yet come.

³¹ Now many of the people beleeued in him, and said, When that Christ commeth, will he doe moe miracles then this man hath done?

³² The Pharises heard that the people murmured these thinges of him, and the Pharises, and high Priestes sent officers to take him.

³³ Then saide Iesus vnto them, Yet am I a little while with you, and then goe I vnto him that sent mee.

³⁴ Ye shall seeke me, and shall not finde me, and where I am, can ye not come.

³⁵ Then saide the Iewes amongs themselues, Whither will he goe, that we shall not finde him? Will he goe vnto them that are dispersed among the Grecians, and teache the Grecians?

³⁶ What saying is this that hee saide, Ye shall seeke mee, and shall not finde mee? and where I am, cannot ye come?

³⁷ Nowe in the last and great day of the feast, Iesus stoode and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come vnto me, and drinke.

³⁹ (This spake hee of the Spirite which they that beleeued in him, should receiue: for the holy Ghost was not yet giuen, because that Iesus was not yet glorified.)

⁴⁰ So many of the people, when they heard this saying, said, Of a trueth this is that Prophet.

⁴¹ Other saide, This is that Christ: and some said, But shall that Christ come out of Galile?

⁴² Saith not the Scripture that that Christ shall come of the seede of Dauid, and out of the towne of Beth-leem, where Dauid was?

⁴³ So was there dissension among the people for him.

⁴⁴ And some of them would haue taken him, but no man layde handes on him.

⁴⁵ Then came the officers to the hie Priests and Pharises, and they said vnto them, Why haue ye not brought him?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Neuer man spake like this man.

⁴⁷ Then answered them the Pharises, Are yee also deceiued?

⁴⁸ Doeth any of the rulers, or of the Pharises beleeue in him?

⁴⁹ But this people, which know not the Law, are cursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus said vnto them, (he that came to Iesus by night, and was one of them.)

⁵¹ Doth our Law iudge a man before it heare him, and knowe what he hath done?

⁵² They answered, and said vnto him, Art thou also of Galile? Searche and looke: for out of Galile ariseth no Prophet.

² Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

³ His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

⁴ For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

⁵ For neither did his brethren believe in him.

⁶ Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

⁷ The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

⁸ Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.

⁹ When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

¹¹ Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

¹² And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

¹³ Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁵ And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

¹⁶ Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me?

²⁰ The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

²¹ Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

²² Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers; and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

²³ If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁵ Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ But lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

²⁷ Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

²⁸ Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

²⁹ But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

³⁰ Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

³¹ And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do moe miracles than these which this man hath done?

³² The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

³³ Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

³⁵ Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

³⁶ What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

³⁷ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

⁴ For no one does a thing privately, if they are seeking to be widely known. Since you do these things, you should show yourself publicly to the world.”

⁵ For even his brothers did not believe in him.

⁶ “My time,” answered Jesus, “is not come yet, but your time is always here.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me, because I testify that its ways are evil.

⁸ Go yourselves up to the Festival; I am not going to this Festival yet, because my time has not yet come.”

⁹ After telling them this, he stayed on in Galilee.

¹⁰ But, when his brothers had gone up to the Festival, Jesus also went up — not publicly, but privately.

¹¹ The authorities were looking for him at the Festival and asking ‘Where is he?’;

¹² and there were many whispers about him amongst the people, some saying ‘He is a good man;’ others, ‘No! He is leading the people astray.’

¹³ No one, however, spoke freely about him, because they were afraid of the authorities.

¹⁴ About the middle of the Festival week, Jesus went up into the Temple Courts, and began teaching.

¹⁵ The authorities were astonished. “How has this man got his learning,” they asked, “when he has never studied?”

¹⁶ So, in reply, Jesus said, “My teaching is not my own; it is his who sent me.

¹⁷ If anyone has the will to do God's will, they will find out whether my teaching is from God, or whether I speak on my own authority.

¹⁸ The person who speaks on their own authority seeks honour for themselves; but the one who seeks the honour of him who sent him is sincere, and there is nothing false in him.

¹⁹ Was not it Moses who gave you the Law? Yet not one of you obeys it! Why are you seeking to put me to death?”

²⁰ “You must be possessed by a demon!” the people exclaimed. “Who is seeking to put you to death?”

²¹ “There was one thing I did,” replied Jesus, “at which you are all still wondering.

²² But that is why Moses has instituted circumcision amongst you — not, indeed, that it began with him, but with our ancestors — and that is why you circumcise even on a Sabbath.

²³ When a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath to prevent the Law of Moses from being broken, how can you be angry with me for making a man sound and well on a Sabbath?

²⁴ Do not judge by appearances; judge justly.”

²⁵ At this some of the people of Jerusalem exclaimed, “Is not this the man who they are seeking to put to death?

²⁶ Yet here he is, speaking out boldly, and they say nothing to him! Is it possible that our leading men have really discovered that he is the Christ?

²⁷ Yet we know where this man is from; but, when the Christ comes, no one will be able to tell where he is from.”

²⁸ Therefore, Jesus, as he was teaching in the Temple Courts, raised his voice and said, “Yes; you know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own authority, but he who sent me may be trusted; and him you do not know.

²⁹ I do know him, for it is from him that I have come, and he sent me as his messenger.”

³⁰ So they sought to arrest him; but no one touched him, for his time was not come yet.

³¹ Many of the people, however, believed in him. “When the Christ comes,” they said, “will he give more signs of his mission than this man has given?”

³² The Pharisees heard the people whispering about him in this way, and so the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him;

³³ at which Jesus said, “I will be with you but a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.

³⁴ You will look for me, and you will not find me; and you will not be able to come where I will be.”

³⁵ “Where is this man going,” the people asked one another, “that we would not find him? Will he go to our countrymen abroad, and teach foreigners?

³⁶ What does he mean by saying ‘You will look for me, and you will not find me; and you will not be able to come where I will be’?”

³⁷ On the last and greatest day of the Festival, Jesus, who was standing by, exclaimed, “If anyone thirsts, they should come to me, and drink.

³⁸ I tell you what I have myself seen in the presence of my Father; and you, in the same way, do what you have learnt from your father.”

⁴⁶ “No one ever spoke as he speaks!” they answered.

⁴⁷ “What! Have you been led astray too?” the Pharisees replied.

⁴⁹ As for these people who do not know the Law — they are cursed!”

²³ If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath ·To cease·, that the Torah ·Teaching· of Moses Drawn out may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath ·To cease·?

²⁴ Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge upright judgment.”

²⁵ Therefore some of them of Jerusalem City of peace said, “Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Messiah Anointed one?

²⁷ However we know where this man comes from, but when the Messiah Anointed one comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

²⁸ Yeshua Salvation therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.

³³ Then Yeshua Salvation said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me.

³⁴ You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come.”

³⁵ The Jews Praisers therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me; and where I am, you can’t come’?”

³⁷ Now on the last day of the festival (of Tabernacles, the seventh day called Hoshana Rabbah ·Save now Great·, the seventh month 21st day), Yeshua Salvation stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!

³⁸ Whoever puts his trust in me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his inmost being!”

³⁹ But he said this about the Spirit, which those trusting in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Yeshua Salvation was not yet glorified.

⁴⁰ Many of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.”

⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Messiah Anointed one.” But some said, “What, does the Messiah Anointed one come out of Galilee District, Circuit?

⁴² Has not the Scripture said that the Messiah Anointed one comes of the offspring of David Beloved, and from Bethlehem House of Bread, the village where David Beloved lived?”

⁴³ So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.

⁴⁴ Some of them would have arrested him, but no one laid hands on him.

⁴⁵ The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees Separated, and they said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him?”

⁴⁶ The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”

⁴⁷ The Pharisees Separated therefore answered them, “You are not also led astray, are you?

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees Separated?

⁴⁹ True, these 'am-ha'aretz ·people of the land· do, but they know nothing about the Torah ·Teaching·, they are under a curse!”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus Victory people (he who came to him by night, being one of them) said to them,

⁵¹ “Our Torah ·Teaching· does not condemn a man, does it, until after hearing from him personally and finding out what he’s doing?”

⁵² They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee District, Circuit? Search, and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee District, Circuit.”

² The Iewes tabernacle feast was at honde.

³ His brethren therfore sayde vnto him: get ye hence and go into Iewry that thy disciples maye se thy workes that thou doest.

⁴ For ther is no man that doeth eny thing secretly and he him selfe seketh to be knowen. Yf thou do soche thinges shewe thy selfe to the worlde.

⁵ For as yet his brethren beleved not in him.

⁶ Then Iesus sayd vnto them: My tyme is not yet come youre tyme is all waye redy.

⁷ The worlde cannot hate you. Me it hateth: because I testify of it that the workes of it are evyll.

⁸ Go ye vp vnto this feast. I will not go vp yet vnto this feast for my tyme is not yet full come.

⁹ These wordes he sayde vnto them and abode still in Galile.

¹⁰ But assone as his brethren were goone vp then went he also vp vnto the feast: not openly but as it were prevely.

¹¹ Then sought him the Iewes at the feast and sayde: Where is he?

¹² And moche murmurynge was ther of him amonge the people. Some sayde: He is good. Wother sayde naye but he deceaveth the people.

¹³ How be it no man spake openly of him for feare of the Iewes

¹⁴ In the middes of the feast Iesus went vp into the temple and taught.

¹⁵ And the Iewes marveylled sayinge: How knoweth he the scriptures seynge that he never learned?

¹⁶ Iesus answered them and sayde: My doctrine is not myne: but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If eny man will do his will he shall knowe of the doctrine whether it be of God or whether I speake of my selfe.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of him selfe seketh his awne prayse. But he that seketh his prayse that sent him the same is true and no vnrightewesnes is in him.

¹⁹ Dyd not Moses geve you a lawe and yet none of you kepeth the lawe? Why goo ye aboute to kyll me?

²⁰ The people answered and sayde: thou hast the devyll: who goeth aboute to kyll the?

²¹ Iesus answered and sayde to them: I have done one worke and ye all marvayle.

²² Moses therfore gave vnto you circumcision: not because it is of Moses but of the fathers. And yet ye on the Saboth daye circumcise a man.

²³ If a man on the Saboth daye receave circumcision without breakinge of the lawe of Moses: disdayne ye at me because I have made a man every whit whoale on the saboth daye?

²⁴ Iudge not after the vtter aperaunce: but iudge rightewes iudgement.

²⁵ Then sayd some of them of Ierusalem: Is not this he who they goo aboute to kyll?

²⁶ Beholde he speaketh boldly and they saye nothinge to him. Do the rulars knowe in dede that this is very Christ?

²⁷ How be it we knowe this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh no man shall knowe whence he is.

²⁸ Then cryed Iesus in the temple as he taught sayinge: ye knowe me and whence I am ye knowe. And yet I am not come of my selfe but he that sent me is true whom ye knowe not.

²⁹ I knowe him: for I am of him and he hath sent me.

³⁰ Then they sought to take him: but no man layde hondes on him because his tyme was not yet come.

³¹ Many of the people beleved on him and sayde: when Christ cometh will he do moo miracles then this man hath done?

³² The pharises hearde that the people murmured suche thinges about him. Wherfore the pharises and hye prestes sent ministres forthe to take him.

³³ Then sayde Iesus vnto the: Yet am I a lytell whyle with you and then goo I vnto him that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seke me and shall not fynde me: and where I am thyther can ye not come.

³⁵ Then sayde the Iewes bitwene the selves: whyther will he goo that we shall not fynde him? Will he goo amonge the gentyls which are scattered all a broade and teache the gentyls?

³⁶ What maner of sayinge is this that he sayde: ye shall seke me and shall not fynde me: and where I am thyther can ye not come?

³⁷ In the last daye that great daye of the feaste Iesus stode and cryed sayinge: If eny man thyrst let him come vnto me and drinke.

³⁸ He that beleveth on me as sayeth the scripture out of his belly shall flowe ryvers of water of lyfe.

³⁹ This spak he of the sprete which they that beleved on him shuld receave. For the holy goost was not yet there because that Iesus was not yet glorifyed.

⁴⁰ Many of the people when they hearde this sayinge sayd: of a truth this is a prophet.

⁴¹ Other sayde: this is Christ. Some sayde: shall Christ come out of Galile?

⁴² Sayeth not the scripture that Christ shall come of the seed of David: and out of the toune of Bethleem where David was?

⁴³ So was ther dissencion amonge the people aboute him.

⁴⁴ And some of them wolde have taken him: but no man layed hondes on him.

⁴⁵ Then came the ministres to the hye prestes and pharises. And they sayde vnto the: why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁶ The servautes answered never man spake as this man doeth.

⁴⁷ Then answered the the pharises: are ye also disceaved?

⁴⁸ Doth eny of the rulers or of the pharises beleve on him?

⁴⁹ But the comen people whiche knowe not the lawe are cursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus sayde vnto them: He that came to Iesus by nyght and was one of them.

⁵¹ Doth oure lawe iudge eny man before it heare him and knowe what he hath done?

⁵² They answered and sayde vnto him: arte thou also of Galile? Searche and loke for out of Galile aryseth no Prophet.

² Now the Jewish Festival of Shelters was near.

³ His brothers therefore said to him, “Leave this place and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works that you do.

⁴ No one does anything in secret if he himself wants to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.”

⁵ For even his brothers did not believe in him.

⁶ Jesus therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.

⁸ You go up to the festival; I am not going to this festival because my time has not yet been fulfilled.”

⁹ After he said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brothers had gone up to the festival, then he also went up, not publicly but in secret.

¹¹ The Jews were looking for him at the festival and said, “Where is he?”

¹² There was much discussion among the crowds about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “No, he leads the crowds astray.”

¹³ Yet no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ When the festival was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.

¹⁵ Then the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this man know so much? He has never been educated.”

¹⁶ Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not mine, but is of him who sent me.

¹⁷ If anyone wishes to do his will, he will know about this teaching, whether it comes from God, or whether I speak from myself.

¹⁸ Whoever speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but whoever seeks the glory of him who sent him, that person is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?”

²⁰ The crowd answered, “You have a demon. Who seeks to kill you?”

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and you all marvel because of it.

²² Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the ancestors), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man.

²³ If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses is not broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteously.”

²⁵ Some of them from Jerusalem said, “Is not this the one they seek to kill?

²⁶ See, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. It cannot be that the rulers indeed know that this is the Christ, can it?

²⁷ Yet we know where this one is from. But when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”

²⁸ Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me and know where I come from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, and you do not know him.

²⁹ I know him because I come from him and he sent me.”

³⁰ They were trying to arrest him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.

³¹ But many in the crowd believed in him, and they said, “When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than what this one has done?”

³² The Pharisees heard the crowds whispering these things about Jesus, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.

³³ Jesus then said, “I am still with you for a short amount of time, and then I go to him who sent me.

³⁴ You will seek me but you will not find me; where I go, you will not be able to come.”

³⁵ The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we will not be able to find him? Will he go to the dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this word that he said, 'You will seek me but will not find me; where I go, you will not be able to come'?”

³⁷ Now on the last, great day of the festival, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

³⁸ He who believes in me, just as the scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from his stomach.”

³⁹ But he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him would receive; the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴⁰ Some of the crowd, when they heard these words, said, “This is indeed the prophet.”

⁴¹ Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “Does the Christ come from Galilee?

⁴² Have the scriptures not said that the Christ will come from the descendants of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?

⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law, they are cursed.”

⁵⁰ Nicodemus (one of the Pharisees, who came to him earlier) said to them,

⁵¹ “Does our law judge a man before hearing from him and knowing what he does?”

⁵² They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet comes from Galilee.”

³ His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.

⁴² Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh from the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

⁴³ So there was a division among the people because of him.

⁴⁴ And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

⁴⁵ Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said to them, Why have ye not brought him?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man.

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, Are ye also deceived?

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on him?

⁴⁹ But this people who know not the law are cursed.

⁵⁰ Nicodemus saith to them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them)

⁵¹ Doth our law judge any man before it heareth him, and knoweth what he doeth?

⁵² They answered and said to him, Art thou also from Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

² Now the Jewish festival, the Feast of Sukkot, was at hand.

³ His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.

⁴ For no one does anything in secret while he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, reveal yourself to the world.”

⁵ For even his brothers didn’t believe in him.

⁶ Yeshua therefore said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

⁷ The world can’t hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

⁸ You go up to the feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because my time is not yet fulfilled.”

⁹ Having said these things to them, he stayed in Galilee.

¹⁰ But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly, but as it were in secret.

¹¹ The Judeans therefore sought him at the feast, and said, “Where is he?”

¹² There was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Not so, but he leads the multitude astray.”

¹³ Yet no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Judeans.

¹⁴ But when it was now the middle of the feast, Yeshua went up into the temple and taught.

¹⁵ The Judeans therefore marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never been educated?”

¹⁶ Yeshua therefore answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

¹⁷ If anyone desires to do his will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is from God or if I am speaking from myself.

¹⁸ He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

¹⁹ Didn’t Moses give you the Torah, and yet none of you keeps the Torah? Why do you seek to kill me?”

²⁰ The multitude answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill you?”

²¹ Yeshua answered them, “I did one work and you all marvel because of it.

²² Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy.

²³ If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the Torah of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a man completely healthy on the Sabbath?

²⁴ Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

²⁵ Therefore some of them of Jerusalem said, “Isn’t this he whom they seek to kill?

²⁶ Behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Can it be that the rulers indeed know that this is truly the Messiah?

²⁷ However, we know where this man comes from, but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he comes from.”

²⁸ Yeshua therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know me, and know where I am from. I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you don’t know.

²⁹ I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”

³⁰ They sought therefore to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

³¹ But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”

³² The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to arrest him.

³³ Then Yeshua said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me.

³⁴ You will seek me and won’t find me. You can’t come where I am.”

³⁵ The Judeans therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Diaspora among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

³⁶ What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me;’ and ‘Where I am, you can’t come’?”

³⁷ Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!

³⁸ He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.”

³⁹ But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Yeshua wasn’t yet glorified.

⁴ for no man doeth anything in huddles, and himself seeketh to be open, +or forsooth no man doeth anything in hid place, or privy, and he seeketh to be in open. If thou doest these things, show thyself to the world.

⁵ For neither his brethren believed in him.

⁶ Therefore Jesus saith to them, My time came not yet, but your time is evermore ready.

⁷ The world may not hate you, soothly it hateth me; for I bear witnessing thereof, that the works of it be evil.

⁸ Go ye up to this feast day, but I shall not go up to this feast day, for my time is not yet fulfilled or full-filled.

⁹ When he had said these things, he dwelt in Galilee.

¹⁰ And after that his brethren were gone up, then he went up to the feast day, not openly, but as in private.

¹¹ Therefore the Jews sought him in the feast day, and said, Where is he?

¹² And much grutching was of him among the people. For some said, That he is good; and others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people;

¹³ nevertheless no man spake openly of him, for dread of the Jews.

¹⁴ But when the middle feast day came, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

¹⁵ And the Jews wondered, and said, How knoweth this man letters, since he hath not learned?

¹⁶ Jesus answered to them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man will do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it be of God, or I speak of myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, is soothfast, and unrightwiseness is not in him.

¹⁹ Whether Moses gave not to you a law, and none of you doeth or keep-eth the law? What seek ye to slay me?

²⁰ And the people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to slay thee?

²¹ Jesus answered, and said to them, I have done one work, and all ye wonder.

²² Therefore Moses gave to you circumcision; not for it is of Moses, but of the fathers; and in the sabbath ye circumcise a man.

²³ If a man take circumcision in the sabbath, that the law of Moses be not broken, have ye indignation, or wrath, to me, for I made all a man whole in the sabbath?

²⁴ Do not ye deem after the face, but deem ye a rightful doom.

²⁵ Therefore some of Jerusalem said, Whether this is not he, whom the Jews seek to slay?

²⁶ and lo! he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Whether the princes know verily that this is Christ?

²⁷ But we know this man, of whence he is; but when Christ shall come, no man knoweth of whence he is.

²⁸ Therefore Jesus cried in the temple teaching, and said, Ye know me, and ye know of whence I am; and I came not of myself, but he is true that sent me, whom ye know not.

²⁹ I know him, and if I say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar; but I know him, for of him I am, and he sent me.

³⁰ Therefore they sought to take him, and no man set on him hands, for his hour came not yet.

³¹ And many of the people believed in him, and said, When Christ shall come, whether he shall do more tokens than those that this doeth?

³² The Pharisees heard the people musing of him, these things; and the princes and the Pharisees sent min-isters, to take him.

³³ Therefore Jesus said to them, Yet a little time I am with you, and I go to the Father, that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find me; and where I am, ye may not come.

³⁵ Therefore the Jews said to them-selves, Whither shall this go, for we shall not find him? whether he will go into the scattering of heathen men, and will teach the heathen?

³⁶ What is this word, which he said, Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find me; and where I am, ye may not come?

³⁷ But in the last day of the great feast, Jesus stood, and cried, and said, If any man thirsteth, come he to me, and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Floods of quick water shall flow out of his womb.

³⁹ But he said this thing of the Spirit or of the Holy Ghost, whom men that believed in him should take; for the Spirit was not yet given, for Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴⁰ Therefore of that company, when they had heard these words of him, they said, This is verily a prophet.

⁴¹ Others said, This is Christ. But some said, Whether Christ cometh from Galilee?

⁴⁸ whether any of the princes, or of the Pharisees believed in him?

⁴⁹ But this people, that knoweth not the law, be cursed.

¹¹ Therefore the Jews sought him in the feast day (or And so the Jews looked for him on the Feast Day, or at the Festival), and said, Where is he?

¹² And much grudging was of him among the people (or And there was much grumbling about him among the people). For some said, That he is good; and others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people;

¹³ nevertheless no man spake openly of him, for dread of the Jews (or for fear of the Jews).

¹⁴ But when the middle feast day came, Jesus went up into the temple (or Jesus went to the Temple), and taught.

¹⁵ And the Jews wondered, and said, How knoweth this man letters, since he hath not learned? (or How can this man know so much, since he hath not studied?)

¹⁶ Jesus answered to them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

¹⁷ If any man will do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

¹⁸ He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, is soothfast (or is truthful), and unrightwiseness is not in him.

¹⁹ Whether Moses gave not to you a law, and none of you doeth or keepeth the law? What seek ye to slay me? (Did not Moses give you the Law? and yet none of you obeyeth the Law. Why do ye seek to kill me?)

²⁰ And the people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to slay thee?

²¹ Jesus answered, and said to them, I have done one work, and all ye wonder.

²² Therefore Moses gave to you circumcision; not for it is of Moses, but of the fathers, (or not that it was from Moses, but from the fathers); and in (or on) the sabbath ye circumcise a man.

²³ If a man take circumcision in the sabbath, that the law of Moses be not broken, (why) have ye indignation, or wrath, to me, for I made all a man whole in the sabbath? (And if a man receive his circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the Law of Moses be not broken, then why have ye indignation, or wrath, against me, for I made a man all whole, or I healed him, on the Sabbath?)

²⁴ Do not ye deem after the face, but deem ye a rightful doom. (Do not simply judge on the surface, but rather make the correct judgement.)

²⁵ Therefore some of Jerusalem said, Whether this is not he, whom the Jews seek to slay?

²⁶ and lo! he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Whether the princes know verily that this is Christ? (or Perhaps our leaders know that he is truly the Messiah?)

²⁷ But we know this man, of whence he is; but when Christ shall come, no man knoweth of whence he is. (And yet we know this man, where he is from; but when the Messiah shall come, no one shall know where he is from.)

²⁸ Therefore Jesus cried in the temple (when he was) teaching, and said, Ye know me, and ye know of whence I am; and I came not of myself, but he is true that sent me, whom ye know not.

²⁹ I know him, and if I say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar; but I know him, for of him I am (or for I am from him), and he sent me.

³⁰ Therefore they sought to take (hold of) him, and no man set on him hands, for his hour came not yet. (And so they sought to take hold of him, but no one put his hands on him, for his hour had not yet come, or for it was not yet his time.)

³¹ And many of the people believed in him, and said, When Christ shall come, whether he shall do more tokens than those that this doeth? (or When the Messiah shall come, shall he do more signs, or miracles, than these which he doeth?)

³² The Pharisees heard the people musing of him, (concerning) these things; and the princes and the Pharisees sent ministers, to take him. (The Pharisees heard the people musing about him, concerning these things; and the leaders, or the high priests, and the Pharisees sent their servants, to take hold of him.)

³³ Therefore Jesus said to them, Yet a little time I am with you, and (then) I go to the Father, that sent me.

³⁴ Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find me; and where I am, ye may not come (or ye cannot come).

³⁵ Therefore the Jews said to themselves, Whither shall this go, for we shall not find him? whether he will go into the scattering of heathen men, and will teach the heathen? (And so the Jews said to themselves, Where shall he go, that we shall not be able to find him? shall he go unto the Dispersion among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?)

³⁶ What is this word, which he said, Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find me; and where I am, ye may not come? (or and where I am, ye cannot come?)

³⁷ But in the last day of the great feast, (or But on the last day of the great Feast, or the great Festival), Jesus stood, and cried (out), and said, If any man thirsteth, come he to me, and drink.

³⁸ He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Rivers of quick water shall flow out of his womb. (He who believeth in me, as the Scripture saith, Rivers of living water, or Rivers of life-giving water, shall flow out of his belly.)

³⁹ But he said this thing of the (Holy) Spirit or of the Holy Ghost, whom men that believed in him should take (or which those who believed in him would receive later); for the Spirit was not yet given, for Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴⁹ But this people, that knoweth not the law, be cursed. (Let these people, who do not know the Law, be cursed!)

⁴ for no man doith ony thing in hiddlis, and hym silf sekith to be opyn. If thou doist these thingis, schewe thi silf to the world.

⁵ For nether hise britheren bileueden in hym.

⁶ Therfor Jhesus seith to hem, My tyme cam not yit, but youre tyme is euermore redi.

⁷ The world may not hate you, sothely it hatith me; for Y bere witnessyng therof, that the werkis of it ben yuele.

⁸ Go ye vp to this feeste dai, but Y schal not go vp to this feeste dai, for my tyme is not yit fulfillid.

⁹ Whanne he hadde seid these thingis, he dwelte in Galilee.

¹⁰ And aftir that hise britheren weren gon vp, thanne he yede vp to the feeste dai, not opynli, but as in priuyte.

¹¹ Therfor the Jewis souyten hym in the feeste dai, and seiden, Where is he?

¹² And myche grutchyng was of hym among the puple. For summe seiden, That he is good; and othere seiden, Nai, but he disceyueth the puple;

¹³ netheles no man spak opynli of hym, for drede of the Jewis.

¹⁴ But whanne the myddil feeste dai cam, Jhesus wente vp in to the temple, and tauyte.

¹⁵ And the Jewis wondriden, and seiden, Hou can this man lettris, sithen he hath not lerned?

¹⁶ Jhesus answerde to hem, and seide, My doctryne is not myn, but his that sente me.

¹⁷ If ony man wole do his wille, he schal knowe of the techyng, whethir it be of God, or Y speke of my silf.

¹⁸ He that spekith of hym silf, sekith his owne glorie; but he that sekith the glorie of hym that sente hym, is sothefast, and vnriytwisnesse is not in hym.

¹⁹ Whether Moises yaf not to you a lawe, and noon of you doith the lawe?

²⁰ What seken ye to sle me? And the puple answerde, and seide, Thou hast a deuel; who sekith to sle thee?

²¹ Jhesus answerde, and seide to hem, Y haue don o werk, and alle ye wondren.

²² Therfor Moises yaf to you circumcisioun; not for it is of Moyses, but of the fadris; and in the sabat ye circumciden a man.

²³ If a man take circumcicioun in the sabat, that the lawe of Moises be not brokun, han ye indignacioun to me, for Y made al a man hool in the sabat?

²⁴ Nile ye deme aftir the face, but deme ye a riytful doom.

²⁵ Therfor summe of Jerusalem seiden, Whethir this is not he, whom the Jewis seken to sle?

²⁶ and lo! he spekith opynli, and thei seien no thing to hym. Whether the princes knewen verili, that this is Crist?

²⁷ But we knowun this man, of whennus he is; but whanne Crist schal come, no man woot of whennus he is.

²⁸ Therfor Jhesus criede in the temple `techynge, and seide, Ye knowen me, and `ye knowen of whennus Y am; and Y cam not of my silf, but he is trewe that sente me, whom ye knowen not.

²⁹ Y knowe hym, and if Y seie that Y knowe hym not, Y schal be lijk to you, a liere; but Y knowe hym, for of hym Y am, and he sente me.

³⁰ Therfor thei souyten to take hym, and no man sette on hym hoondis, for his our cam not yit.

³¹ And many of the puple bileueden in hym, and seiden, Whanne Crist schal come, whether he schal do mo tokenes, than tho that this doith?

³² Farisees herden the puple musinge of hym these thingis; and the princis and Farisees senten mynystris, to take hym.

³³ Therfor Jhesus seide to hem, Yit a litil tyme Y am with you, and Y go to the fadir, that sente me.

³⁴ Ye schulen seke me, and ye schulen not fynde; and where Y am, ye may not come.

³⁵ Therfor the Jewis seiden to hem silf, Whidur schal this gon, for we schulen not fynde hym? whether he wole go in to the scateryng of hethene men, and wole teche the hethene?

³⁶ What is this word, which he seide, Ye schulen seke me, and ye schulen not fynde; and where Y am, ye moun not come?

³⁷ But in the laste dai of the greet feeste, Jhesus stood, and criede, and seide, If ony man thirstith, come he to me, and drynke.

³⁸ He that bileueth in me, as the scripture seith, Floodis of quyk watir schulen flowe fro his wombe.

³⁹ But he seide this thing of the Spirit, whom men that bileueden in hym schulden take; for the Spirit was not yit youun, for Jhesus was not yit glorified.

⁴⁰ Therfor of that cumpanye, whanne thei hadden herd these wordis of hym, thei seiden, This is verili a prophete.

⁴¹ Othere seiden, This is Crist. `But summe seiden, Whether Crist cometh fro Galilee?

⁴² Whether the scripture seith not, that of the seed of Dauid, and of the castel of Bethleem, where Dauid was, Crist cometh?

⁴³ Therfor discencioun was maad among the puple for hym.

⁴⁴ For summe of hem wolden haue take hym, but no man sette hondis on hym.

⁴⁵ Therfor the mynystris camen to bischopis and Farisees, and thei seiden to hem, Whi brouyten ye not hym?

⁴⁶ The mynystris answeriden, Neuere man spak so, as this man spekith.

⁴⁷ Therfor the Farisees answeriden to hem, Whether ye ben disseyued also?

⁴⁸ whether ony of the pryncis or of the Farisees bileueden in hym?

⁴⁹ But this puple, that knowith not the lawe, ben cursid.

⁵⁰ Nychodeme seith to hem, he that cam to hym bi nyyt, that was oon of hem, Whethir oure lawe demith a man,

⁵¹ but it haue first herde of hym, and knowe what he doith?

⁵² Thei answeriden, and seiden to hym, Whether thou art a man of Galilee also? Seke thou scripturis, and se thou, that a prophete risith not of Galilee.

² and the feast of the Jews was nigh — that of tabernacles —

³ his brethren, therefore, said unto him, 'Remove hence, and go away to Judea, that thy disciples also may behold thy works that thou dost;

⁴ for no one in secret doth anything, and himself seeketh to be in public; if thou dost these things — manifest thyself to the world;'

⁵ for not even were his brethren believing in him.

⁶ Jesus, therefore, saith to them, 'My time is not yet present, but your time is always ready;

⁷ the world is not able to hate you, but me it doth hate, because I testify concerning it that its works are evil.

⁸ Ye — go ye up to this feast; I do not yet go up to this feast, because my time hath not yet been fulfilled;'

⁹ and saying these things to them, he remained in Galilee.

¹⁰ And when his brethren went up, then also he himself went up to the feast, not manifestly, but as in secret;

¹¹ the Jews, therefore, were seeking him, in the feast, and said, 'Where is that one?'

¹² and there was much murmuring about him among the multitudes, some indeed said — 'He is good;' and others said, 'No, but he leadeth astray the multitude;'

¹³ no one, however, was speaking freely about him, through fear of the Jews.

¹⁴ And it being now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up to the temple, and he was teaching,

¹⁵ and the Jews were wondering, saying, 'How hath this one known letters — not having learned?'

¹⁶ Jesus answered them and said, 'My teaching is not mine, but His who sent me;

¹⁷ if any one may will to do His will, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is of God, or — I do speak from myself.

¹⁸ 'He who is speaking from himself his own glory doth seek, but he who is seeking the glory of him who sent him, this one is true, and unrighteousness is not in him;

¹⁹ hath not Moses given you the law? and none of you doth the law; why me do ye seek to kill?'

²⁰ The multitude answered and said, 'Thou hast a demon, who doth seek to kill thee?'

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, 'One work I did, and ye all wonder,

²² because of this, Moses hath given you the circumcision — not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers — and on a sabbath ye circumcise a man;

²³ if a man doth receive circumcision on a sabbath that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye wroth with me that I made a man all whole on a sabbath?

²⁴ judge not according to appearance, but the righteous judgment judge.'

²⁵ Certain, therefore, of the Jerusalemites said, 'Is not this he whom they are seeking to kill?

²⁶ and, lo, he doth speak freely, and they say nothing to him; did the rulers at all know truly that this is truly the Christ?

²⁷ but this one — we have known whence he is; and the Christ, when he doth come, no one doth know whence he is.'

²⁸ Jesus cried, therefore, in the temple, teaching and saying, 'Ye have both known me, and ye have known whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but He who sent me is true, whom ye have not known;

²⁹ and I have known Him, because I am from Him, and He did send me.'

³⁰ They were seeking, therefore, to seize him, and no one laid the hand on him, because his hour had not yet come,

³¹ and many out of the multitude did believe in him, and said — 'The Christ — when he may come — will he do more signs than these that this one did?'

³² The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring these things concerning him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers that they may take him;

³³ Jesus, therefore, said to them, 'Yet a little time I am with you, and I go away unto Him who sent me;

³⁴ ye will seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye are not able to come.'

³⁵ The Jews, therefore, said among themselves, 'Whither is this one about to go that we shall not find him? — to the dispersion of the Greeks is he about to go? and to teach the Greeks;

³⁶ what is this word that he said, Ye will seek me, and ye shall not find? and, Where I am, ye are not able to come?'

³⁷ And in the last, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, 'If any one doth thirst, let him come unto me and drink;

³⁸ he who is believing in me, according as the Writing said, Rivers out of his belly shall flow of living water;'

³⁹ and this he said of the Spirit, which those believing in him were about to receive; for not yet was the Holy Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁴⁰ Many, therefore out of the multitude, having heard the word, said, 'This is truly the Prophet;'

⁴¹ others said, 'This is the Christ;' and others said, 'Why, out of Galilee doth the Christ come?

⁴² Did not the Writing say, that out of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem — the village where David was — the Christ doth come?'

⁴³ A division, therefore, arose among the multitude because of him.

⁴⁴ And certain of them were willing to seize him, but no one laid hands on him;

⁴⁵ the officers came, therefore, unto the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, 'Wherefore did ye not bring him?'

⁴⁶ The officers answered, 'Never so spake man — as this man.'

⁴⁷ The Pharisees, therefore, answered them, 'Have ye also been led astray?

⁴⁸ did any one out of the rulers believe in him? or out of the Pharisees?

⁴⁹ but this multitude, that is not knowing the law, is accursed.'

⁵⁰ Nicodemus saith unto them — he who came by night unto him — being one of them,

⁵¹ 'Doth our law judge the man, if it may not hear from him first, and know what he doth?'

⁵² They answered and said to him, 'Art thou also out of Galilee? search and see, that a prophet out of Galilee hath not risen;'
