John 5:27-44 in English

²⁷ and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

²⁸ Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

²⁹ and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

³⁰ I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

³¹ If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

³² It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

³³ Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth.

³⁴ But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved.

³⁵ He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

³⁶ But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁷ And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.

³⁸ And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.

³⁹ Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me;

⁴⁰ and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.

⁴¹ I receive not glory from men.

⁴² But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves.

⁴³ I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye seek not?

³² There is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that his testimony about me is valid.

³³ You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

³⁴ Not that I accept human testimony, but I tell you this so that you may be saved.

³⁵ John was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.

³⁶ I have a greater testimony than John’s. The works that the Father has given me to finish — the very works that I do — testify about me, that the Father has sent me.

³⁷ The Father Himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.

³⁸ You don’t have His words dwelling in you, because you don’t believe the One who He sent.

³⁹ You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and these testify about me.

⁴⁰ Yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

⁴¹ “I don’t accept glory from men,

⁴² but I know you. I know that you don’t have God’s sincere love in you.

⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t accept me, but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

⁴⁴ How can you believe when you accept glory from one another, and don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

²⁷ And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

²⁸ Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

²⁹ And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

³⁶ But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁷ And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

³⁸ And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, which receive glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye seek not?

²⁷ Because I am the one who came from heaven, he has given me the authority to judge people concerning their sins.

²⁸ Do not be surprised about that, because there will be a time when all people who have died will hear my voice,

²⁹ and they will become alive again. Those who have lived good lives will rise from their graves and live forever. But those who have lived evil lives will rise, and I will ◄condemn them/declare that I will punish them for their sins►.

³⁰ I do not do anything like that by my own authority. I judge people only according to what I hear my Father tell me. I will judge people fairly, because I do not want to please only myself. Instead, I want to please my Father, who sent me.

³¹ If I were the only one to tell people about myself, people could rightly say that what I say is not true.

³² But there is someone else who tells people about me. And I know that what he tells people about me is true.

³³ As for you, when you sent messengers to John the Baptizer to ask about me, he told the truth about me.

³⁴ I do not need that people tell others about me. But instead, I am reminding you about what John told people about me, in order that you will believe it and be saved { God will save you}.

³⁵ John's message about me (OR, John) MET was like a lamp that shines brightly. For a short while you were willing to be made happy by that message {to let that message make you happy}.

³⁶ But there is something else that tells you about me. It should prove who I am more than what John said about me. The miracles PRS that my Father told me to do, the miracles that I am performing, show (OR, prove) to people that my Father sent me.

³⁷ Furthermore, my Father, who sent me, tells people about me. You have never heard his voice or seen him.

³⁸ Furthermore, you have not believed in me, the one he sent. So you have not believed his message in your inner beings.

³⁹ You carefully study (OR, Study) the Scriptures, because you think that by studying them you will find the way to have eternal life. And those Scriptures tell people about me!

⁴⁰ But you refuse ◄to come to me/to believe my message► in order that you may have eternal life.

⁴¹ It does not matter to me whether people praise me.

⁴² But you want people to praise you. I know that within yourselves you do not love God.

⁴³ Although I have come to earth with my Father's authority MTY, you do not accept me. But if someone else comes with his own authority MTY, you accept him!

⁴⁴ You accept your praising each other, but you do not try to do things that will result in God himself praising you. So ◄there is no way you can believe in me!/how can you believe my message?► RHQ

²⁸ Do not be surprised at this: for the time is coming when his voice will come to all who are in the place of the dead,

²⁹ And they will come out; those who have done good, into the new life; and those who have done evil, to be judged.

³⁰ Of myself I am unable to do anything: as the voice comes to me so I give a decision: and my decision is right because I have no desire to do what is pleasing to myself, but only what is pleasing to him who sent me.

³¹ If I gave witness about myself, my witness would not be true.

³² There is another who gives witness about me and I am certain that the witness he gives about me is true.

³³ You sent to John and he gave true witness.

³⁴ But I have no need of a man's witness: I only say these things so that you may have salvation.

³⁵ He was a burning and shining light, and for a time you were ready to be happy in his light.

³⁶ But the witness which I have is greater than that of John: the work which the Father has given me to do, the very work which I am now doing, is a witness that the Father has sent me.

³⁷ And the Father himself who sent me has given witness about me. Not one of you has ever given ear to his voice; his form you have not seen.

³⁸ And you have not kept his word in your hearts, because you have not faith in him whom he has sent.

³⁹ You make search in the holy Writings, in the belief that through them you get eternal life; and it is those Writings which give witness about me.

⁴⁰ And still you have no desire to come to me so that you may have life.

⁴¹ I do not take honour from men;

⁴² But I have knowledge of you that you have no love for God in your hearts.

⁴³ I have come in my Father's name, and your hearts are not open to me. If another comes with no other authority but himself, you will give him your approval.

⁴⁴ How is it possible for you to have faith while you take honour one from another and have no desire for the honour which comes from the only God?

²⁷ and has given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is Son of man.

²⁸ Wonder not at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

²⁹ and shall go forth; those that have practised good, to resurrection of life, and those that have done evil, to resurrection of judgment.

³⁰ I cannot do anything of myself; as I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my will, but the will of him that has sent me.

³¹ If I bear witness concerning myself, my witness is not true.

³² It is another who bears witness concerning me, and I know that the witness which he bears concerning me is true.

³³ Ye have sent unto John, and he has borne witness to the truth.

³⁴ But I do not receive witness from man, but I say this that ye might be saved.

³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

³⁶ But I have the witness that is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me that I should complete them, the works themselves which I do, bear witness concerning me that the Father has sent me.

³⁷ And the Father who has sent me himself has borne witness concerning me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor have seen his shape,

³⁸ and ye have not his word abiding in you; for whom he hath sent, him ye do not believe.

³⁹ Ye search the scriptures, for ye think that in them ye have life eternal, and they it is which bear witness concerning me;

⁴⁰ and ye will not come to me that ye might have life.

³⁷ “Further, the Father who sent me has Himself testified about me. You have neither heard His voice nor seen His form at any time.

³⁸ Nor do you have His word abiding in you, because you do not believe on the very one whom He sent.

³⁹ You examine the Scriptures because in them you think you have eternal life, yet they are the very ones that testify about me.

⁴⁰ But you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

⁴¹ “I do not accept glory from people.

⁴² Rather I have come to know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.

⁴³ I have come in my Father's name and you do not receive me; should another come in his own name, him you will receive.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from men and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

²⁷ The Father also granted the authority for judgment to him, for he is the Son of man.

²⁸ Don't be surprised at this, for the time is coming when all those in the grave will hear his voice

²⁹ and will rise again: those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation.

³⁰ I can do nothing by myself. I judge based on what I'm told, and my decision is right, for I'm not doing my own will but the will of the one who sent me.

³¹ If I were to make claims about myself, such claims wouldn't be valid;

³² but someone else gives evidence about me, and I know what he says about me is true.

³³ You asked John about me, and he told the truth,

³⁴ but I don't need any human endorsement. I'm explaining this to you so you can be saved.

³⁵ John was like a brightly-burning light, and you were willing to enjoy his light for a while.

³⁶ But the evidence I'm giving is greater than John's. For I am doing the work that the Father gave me to do,

³⁷ and this is the proof that the Father sent me. The Father who sent me, he himself speaks on my behalf. You've never heard his voice, and you've never seen what he looks like,

³⁸ and you don't accept what he says, because you don't trust in the one he sent.

³⁹ You search the Scriptures because you think that through them you'll gain eternal life. But the evidence they give is in support of me!

⁴⁰ And yet you don't want to come to me so that you might live.

⁴¹ I'm not looking for human approval

⁴² —I know you, and that you don't have God's love in you.

⁴³ For I've come to represent my Father, and you won't accept me; but if someone comes representing themselves, then you accept them!

⁴⁴ How can you trust in me when you look for praise from one another and yet you don't look for praise from the one true God?

²⁷ And hath giuen him power also to execute iudgement, in that he is the Sonne of man.

²⁸ Marueile not at this: for the houre shall come, in the which all that are in the graues, shall heare his voyce.

²⁹ And they shall come foorth, that haue done good, vnto ye resurrection of life: but they that haue done euil, vnto the resurrection of condemnation.

³⁰ I can doe nothing of mine owne selfe: as I heare, I iudge: and my iudgement is iust, because I seeke not mine owne will, but the will of the Father who hath sent me.

³¹ If I should beare witnesse of my selfe, my witnesse were not true.

³² There is another that beareth witnesse of me, and I know that the witnesse, which he beareth of me, is true.

³³ Ye sent vnto Iohn, and he bare witnesse vnto the trueth.

³⁴ But I receiue not the record of man: neuerthelesse these things I say, that ye might be saued.

³⁵ He was a burning, and a shining candle: and ye would for a season haue reioyced in his light.

³⁶ But I haue greater witnesse then the witnesse of Iohn: for the workes which the Father hath giuen me to finish, the same workes that I doe, beare witnesse of me, that the Father sent me.

³⁷ And the Father himselfe, which hath sent me, beareth witnesse of me. Ye haue not heard his voyce at any time, neither haue ye seene his shape.

³⁸ And his worde haue you not abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye beleeued not.

³⁹ Searche the Scriptures: for in them ye thinke to haue eternall life, and they are they which testifie of me.

⁴⁰ But ye will not come to me, that ye might haue life.

⁴² But I know you, that ye haue not the loue of God in you.

⁴³ I am come in my Fathers Name, and ye receiue me not: if another shall come in his owne name, him will ye receiue.

⁴⁴ How can ye beleeue, which receiue honour one of another, and seeke not the honour that commeth of God alone?

³³ Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

³⁴ But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

³⁶ But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁷ And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

³⁸ And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

³⁹ Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

⁴⁰ And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

⁴¹ I receive not honour from men.

⁴² But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

⁴³ I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

²⁷ And he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

²⁸ Marvel not at this; for the hour is coming, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice,

²⁹ and will come forth, they that have done good, to a resurrection of life; they that have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

³⁰ I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.

³¹ If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

³² There is another who beareth witness of me; and ye know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

⁴³ I have come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not; if another come in his own name, him ye will receive.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe while ye receive honor from one another, and seek not the honor that is from him who alone is God?

²⁷ and, because he is Son of Man, he has also given him authority to act as judge.

²⁸ Do not wonder at this; for the time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice,

²⁹ and will come out — those who have done good rising to life, and those who have lived evil lives rising for condemnation.

³⁰ I can do nothing of myself; I judge as I am taught; and the judgement that I give is just, because my aim is not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

³² it is another who bears testimony to me, and I know that the testimony which he bears to me is trustworthy.

³⁶ But the testimony which I have is of greater weight than John's; for the work that the Father has given me to carry out — the work that I am doing — is in itself proof that the Father has sent me as his messenger.

³⁷ The Father who has sent me has himself borne testimony to me. You have neither listened to his voice, not seen his form;

³⁸ and you have not taken his message home to your hearts, because you do not believe him whom he sent as his messenger.

³⁹ You search the scriptures, because you think that you find in them immortal life; and, though it is those scriptures that bear testimony to me,

⁴⁰ you refuse to come to me to have life.

³⁷ Abba ·Father· himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.

³⁸ You don’t have his word living in you; because you don’t believe him whom he sent.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

²⁷ and hath geven him power also to iudge in that he is the sonne of man.

²⁸ Marvayle not at this the houre shall come in the which all that are in the graves shall heare his voice

²⁹ and shall come forthe: they that have done good vnto the resurreccion of lyfe: and they that have done evyll vnto the resurreccion of dampnacion.

³⁰ I can of myne awne selfe do nothinge at all. As I heare I iudge and my iudgement is iust because I seke not myne awne will but the will of the father which hath sent me.

³¹ Yf I beare witnes of my selfe my witnes is not true.

³² Ther is a nother that beareth witnes of me and I am sure that the witnes whiche he beareth of me is true.

³³ Ye sent vnto Iohn and he bare witnes vnto the truthe.

³⁴ But I receave not the recorde of man. Neverthelesse these thinges I saye that ye might be safe.

³⁸ therto his wordes have ye not abydinge in you. For whome he hath sent: him ye beleve not.

³⁹ Searche the scriptures for in them ye thinke ye have eternall lyfe: and they are they which testify of me.

⁴⁴ How can ye beleve which receave honoure one of another and seke not the honoure that commeth of God only?

²⁷ and the Father has given the Son authority to carry out judgment because he is the Son of Man.

²⁸ Do not be amazed at this, for there is a time coming in which everyone who is in the tombs will hear his voice

²⁹ and will come out. Those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

³⁰ I can do nothing from myself. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous because I am not seeking my own will but the will of him who sent me.

³¹ If I should testify about myself, my testimony would not be true.

⁴² but I know that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

⁴³ I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another should come in his own name, you would receive him.

⁴⁴ How can you believe, you who accept praise from one another but are not seeking the praise that comes from the only God?

⁴⁰ And ye will not come to me, that ye have life.

⁴¹ I take not clearness of men;

⁴² but I have known you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

⁴³ I came in the name of my Father, and ye took not me. If another come in his own name, ye shall receive him.

⁴⁴ How may ye believe, that receive glory each of other, and ye seek not the glory that is of God alone?

²⁷ and he gave to him power to make doom, (or and he gave him the authority to pass judgement), for he is man’s Son.

²⁸ Do not ye wonder in this, for the hour cometh, in which all men that be in burials, shall hear the voice of God’s Son. (Do not wonder at this, for the hour cometh, in which all those who be in graves, shall hear the voice of God’s Son.)

³² another is that beareth witnessing of me, and I know that his witnessing is true, that he beareth of me. (but there is another who testifieth about me, and I know that his testimony is true, what he testifieth about me.)

³³ Ye sent to John, and he bare witnessing to the truth. (Ye sent messengers to John, and he testified about the truth, or and he testified truthfully.)

³⁴ But I take not witnessing of (any) man; but I say these things, that ye be safe. (But I do not need the testimony of anyone; but I say these things, so that ye can be saved.)

³⁵ He was a lantern burning and shining, or giving light; but ye would (be) glad, or (would have) joy, (or rejoice), at an hour in his light.

³⁶ But I have more witnessing than John, for the works that my Father gave to me to perform them or forsooth the works that my Father gave me that I perform them, those works that I do bear witnessing of me, that the Father sent me. (But I have a greater witness than John, or But I have better testimony than John’s, for the works that my Father gave to me to complete, or to finish, those works that I do testify about me, that the Father sent me.)

³⁷ And the Father that sent me, he bare witnessing of me, (or And the Father who sent me, he testified about me). (But) Neither ye heard ever his voice, neither ye saw his likeness, or (his) form.

³⁸ And ye have not his word dwelling in you; for ye believe not to him, whom he sent.

³⁹ Seek ye the scriptures, in which ye guess to have everlasting life; and those it be, that bear witnessing of me. (Ye study the Scriptures, through which ye hope to gain eternal life; and they do indeed testify about me.)

⁴⁰ And (yet) ye will not come to me, (so) that ye (can) have (eternal) life.

⁴¹ I take not clearness of men; (I do not receive my glory, or my honour, from people;)

⁴² but I have known you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

⁴³ I came in the name of my Father, and ye took not me (or but ye did not receive me). If another come in his own name, ye shall receive him.

⁴⁴ How may ye believe, that receive glory each of (the) other, and ye seek not the glory that is of God alone? (How can ye believe, ye who receive your glory from one another, and seek not the glory that is from God alone?)

²⁷ and he yaf to hym power to make doom, for he is mannys sone.

²⁹ And thei that han do goode thingis, schulen go in to ayenrisyng of lijf; but thei that han done yuele thingis, in to ayenrisyng of doom.

³⁰ Y may no thing do of my silf, but as Y here, Y deme, and my doom is iust, for Y seke not my wille, but the wille of the fadir that sente me.

³¹ If Y bere witnessing of my silf, my witnessyng is not trewe;

³² another is that berith witnessyng of me, and Y woot that his witnessyng is trewe, that he berith of me.

³³ Ye senten to Joon, and he bar witnessyng to treuthe.

³⁴ But Y take not witnessyng of man; but Y seie these thingis, that ye be saaf.

³⁶ But Y haue more witnessyng than Joon, for the werkis that my fadir yaf to me to perfourme hem, thilke werkis that Y do beren witnessyng of me, that the fadir sente me.

³⁷ And the fadir that sente me, he bar witnessyng of me. Nether ye herden euere his vois, nether ye seien his licnesse.

³⁸ And ye han not his word dwellynge in you; for ye byleuen not to hym, whom he sente.

³⁹ Seke ye scripturis, in which ye gessen to haue euerlastynge lijf; and tho it ben, that beren witnessyng of me.

⁴⁴ Hou moun ye bileue, that resseyuen glorie ech of othere, and ye seken not the glorie `that is of God aloone?

²⁷ and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man.

²⁸ 'Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice,

²⁹ and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment.

³⁰ 'I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me.

³¹ 'If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true;

³² another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true;

³³ ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth.

³⁴ 'But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved;

³⁵ he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light.

³⁶ 'But I have the testimony greater than John's, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁷ 'And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen;

³⁸ and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe.

³⁹ 'Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me;

⁴⁰ and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life;

⁴¹ glory from man I do not receive,

⁴² but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves.

⁴³ 'I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive;

⁴⁴ how are ye able — ye — to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that is from God alone ye seek not?
