John 2:1-17 in English

¹ And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

² and Jesus also was bidden, and his disciples, to the marriage.

³ And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

⁴ And Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

⁵ His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

⁶ Now there were six waterpots of stone set there after the Jews’ manner of purifying, containing two or three firkins apiece.

⁷ Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

⁸ And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the ruler of the feast. And they bare it.

⁹ And when the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants that had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast calleth the bridegroom,

¹⁰ and saith unto him, Every man setteth on first the good wine; and when men have drunk freely, then that which is worse: thou hast kept the good wine until now.

¹¹ This beginning of his signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

¹² After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and there they abode not many days.

¹³ And the passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And he found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

¹⁵ and he made a scourge of cords, and cast all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew their tables;

¹⁶ and to them that sold the doves he said, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house a house of merchandise.

¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for thy house shall eat me up.

¹ On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and Jesus’ mother was there.

² Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.

³ When they ran out of wine, Jesus’ mother told Him, “They have no wine.”

⁴ Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My time has not yet come.”

⁵ His mother told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”

⁶ Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding two to three metretes.

⁷ Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water,” so they filled them to the brim.

⁸ Then He told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so,

⁹ and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He didn’t realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

¹⁰ and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first, and then the cheaper wine after the guests have drunk freely, but you have saved the best till now!”

¹¹ Jesus did this beginning of signs in Cana of Galilee. He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

¹² After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother, His brothers, and His disciples, and they stayed there only a few days.

¹³ The time for the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.

¹⁵ When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.

¹⁶ He told those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Don’t make my Father’s house a market place!”

¹⁷ Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”

¹⁰ And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

¹¹ This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

¹ Two days later there was a wedding celebration in Cana town, in Galilee district. Jesus' mother was there.

² Jesus and we his disciples were also there, because we had been invited {someone had invited us} also.

³ When the guests had drunk all the wine that was there, Jesus' mother said to him, “The wine is all gone; can you do something about that?”

⁴ Jesus said to her, “Ma'am/Woman, ◄do not tell me what to do !/why do you tell me what to do ?► RHQ It is not yet time MTY to show that I am the Messiah by working miracles .”

⁵ Then Jesus' mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you!”

⁶ There were six empty stone jars there. The Jews habitually put water in them to use for washing things to make them acceptable to God. Each jar held ◄20 to 30 gallons/80 to 120 liters►.

⁷ Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water!” So they filled the jars to the brim.

⁸ Then he told them, “Now, ladle out some of it and take it ◄to the head waiter/to the master of ceremonies►.” So the servants did that.

⁹ ◄The head waiter/The master of ceremonies► tasted the water, which had now become wine. He did not know where the wine had come from, but the servants who had ladled out the wine knew. The wine was delicious! So he called the bridegroom over,

¹⁰ and said to him, “Everyone else serves the best wine first. Then when the guests have drunk so much that they cannot tell the difference, they serve the cheap wine. But you have not done what others do. You have kept the best wine until now!”

¹¹ That was the first miracle that Jesus did. He did it in Cana town, in Galilee district. By doing it he showed how awesome he is, and as a result, we his disciples believed that he truly was the Messiah.

¹² Jesus then went down to Capernaum city with his mother and younger brothers and us his disciples. We stayed there several days.

¹³ Later, when it was almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, Jesus and we his disciples went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ There, in the Temple courtyard, he saw some men who were selling cattle, sheep, and pigeons for sacrifices. He also saw men who were sitting at tables, making a big profit as they gave people Temple tax coins in exchange for their Roman coins.

¹⁵ Then Jesus made a whip from some cords and used it to chase out the sheep and cattle from the Temple courtyard. By overturning their tables he scattered the coins of the men who were exchanging them.

¹⁶ He said to those who were selling doves, “Take these doves away from here! Stop defiling my Father's Temple by making it a market!”

¹⁷ Then we disciples remembered that these words had been written {that someone/David had written these words} in the Scriptures prophesying what the Messiah would say: “Others PRS will strongly oppose me because I greatly desire that people respect your Sacred Tent.”

¹ On the third day two people were going to be married at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there:

² And Jesus with his disciples came as guests.

³ When they had not enough wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine.

⁴ Jesus said to her, Woman, this is not your business; my time is still to come.

⁵ His mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it.

⁶ Now six pots of stone, every one taking two or three firkins of water, were placed there for the purpose of washing, as is the way of the Jews.

⁷ Jesus said to the servants, Make the pots full of water. And they made them full to the top.

⁸ Then he said to them, Now take some, and give it to the master of the feast. So they took it to him.

⁹ After tasting the water which had now become wine, the master of the feast (having no idea where it came from, though it was clear to the servants who took the water out) sent for the newly-married man,

¹⁰ And said to him, Every man first puts out his best wine and when all have had enough he puts out what is not so good; but you have kept the good wine till now.

¹¹ This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and let his glory be seen openly; and his disciples put their faith in him.

¹² After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they were there not more than two or three days.

¹³ The time of the Passover of the Jews was near and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And there in the Temple he saw men trading in oxen and sheep and doves, and he saw the changers of money in their seats:

¹⁵ And he made a whip of small cords and put them all out of the Temple, with the sheep and the oxen, sending in all directions the small money of the changers and overturning their tables;

¹⁶ And to those who were trading in doves he said, Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a market.

¹⁷ And it came to the minds of the disciples that the Writings say, I am on fire with passion for your house.

¹ And on the third day a marriage took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

² And Jesus also, and his disciples, were invited to the marriage.

³ And wine being deficient, the mother of Jesus says to him, They have no wine.

⁴ Jesus says to her, What have I to do with thee, woman? mine hour has not yet come.

⁵ His mother says to the servants, Whatever he may say to you, do.

⁶ Now there were standing there six stone water-vessels, according to the purification of the Jews, holding two or three measures each.

⁷ Jesus says to them, Fill the water-vessels with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

⁸ And he says to them, Draw out now, and carry it to the feast-master. And they carried it.

⁹ But when the feast-master had tasted the water which had been made wine (and knew not whence it was, but the servants knew who drew the water), the feast-master calls the bridegroom,

¹⁰ and says to him, Every man sets on first the good wine, and when men have well drunk, then the inferior; thou hast kept the good wine till now.

¹¹ This beginning of signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

¹⁰ and says to him: “Everybody serves the good wine first, then, when people are intoxicated, the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

¹¹ This, the first of the miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee and revealed His glory; and His disciples believed into Him.

¹² After this He went down to Capernaum—He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples—but they did not stay there many days.

¹³ Now the Jewish Passover was near, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And in the Temple He found people selling oxen and sheep and doves, also the moneychangers at work.

¹⁵ When He had made a scourge out of cords, He drove all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and as for the moneychangers, He overturned the tables and scattered the coins.

¹⁶ And to the dove-sellers He said: “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father's House into a marketplace!”

¹⁷ Then His disciples remembered that it stands written, “Zeal for Your House consumes me.”

¹ Two days later a wedding was held at Cana in Galilee, and Jesus' mother was there.

² Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

³ The wine ran out, so Jesus' mother told him, “They don't have any more wine.”

⁴ “Mother, why should you involve me? My time hasn't come yet,” he replied.

⁵ His mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

⁶ Standing nearby were six stone jars used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each one holding twenty to thirty gallons.

⁷ “Fill the jars with water,” Jesus told them. So they filled them right up.

⁸ Then he told them, “Pour some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So they took him some.

⁹ The master of ceremonies didn't know where it had come from, only the servants knew. But when he tasted the water that had been turned to wine, he called the bridegroom over.

¹⁰ “Everyone serves out the best wine first,” he told him, “and once people have had plenty to drink, then they put out the cheaper wine. But you have kept the best wine till last!”

¹¹ This was the very first of Jesus' miraculous signs, and was performed in Cana of Galilee. Here he revealed his glory, and his disciples put their trust in him.

¹² After this Jesus left for Capernaum with his mother, brothers, and disciples where they stayed for a few days.

¹³ Since it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went on to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ In the Temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves; and money-changers sitting at their tables.

¹⁵ He made a whip out of cords and drove everyone out of the Temple, along with the sheep and cattle, scattering coins of the money-changers and turning over their tables.

¹⁶ He ordered the dove-sellers, “Take these things out of here! Don't turn my Father's house into a market!”

¹⁷ His disciples remembered the Scripture that says, “My devotion for your house is like a fire burning inside me!”

¹ And the thirde day, was there a mariage in Cana a towne of Galile, and the mother of Iesus was there.

² And Iesus was called also, and his disciples vnto the mariage.

³ Nowe when the wine failed, the mother of Iesus saide vnto him, They haue no wine.

⁴ Iesus saide vnto her, Woman, what haue I to doe with thee? mine houre is not yet come.

Forsooth there were put six stone pots, after the cleansing of (the) Jews, taking each two or three measures. (And there were put there six stone pots, or six stone water jars, for the purification rites of the Jews, each one holding two or three measures, or twenty or thirty gallons.)

⁷ And Jesus saith to them, Fill ye the pots with water. And they filled them, up to the mouth or unto the highest part.

⁸ And Jesus said to them, Draw ye (it) now, and bear ye to the master of the feast. And they bare (it to him).

⁹ And when the master of the feast had tasted the water made (into) wine, and knew not whereof it was, but the ministers knew that drew the water (or but the servants who drew the water knew), the master of the feast calleth the spouse,

¹⁰ and saith to him, Each man setteth first good wine, and when men be full-filled, then that that is worse; but thou hast kept the good wine into this time.

¹¹ Jesus did this the beginning of signs (or Jesus did this, the first of his miracles), in the Cana of Galilee, and showed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

¹² After these things he came down to Capernaum, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and they dwelled there not many days.

¹³ And the pask of (the) Jews was nigh (or And the Passover of the Jews was near), and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And he found in the temple men selling oxen, and sheep, and culvers, and money-changers sitting (there). (And he found men in the Temple selling oxen, and sheep, and doves and pigeons, and money-changers sitting there.)

¹⁵ And when he had made as it were a scourge of small cords, he drove out all of (or from) the temple, and (the) oxen, and (the) sheep; and he shedded out the money of (the) changers, and turned upside-down the boards, (or and he poured out the money of the money-changers, and turned upside-down their tables). +And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he cast all out of the temple, and sheep, and oxen; and he shedded out the money of (the) changers, and turned upside-down the boards.

¹⁶ And he said to them that sold culvers (or And he said to those who sold the doves and pigeons), Take away from hence these things, and do not ye make the house of my Father (into) an house of merchandise.

¹⁷ And his disciples had mind, for it was written, (or And his disciples remembered, that it is written), The fervent love of thine house hath eaten me. Forsooth his disciples had mind, for it is written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me (or My zeal for thine house hath consumed me).

¹ And the thridde dai weddyngis weren maad in the Cane of Galilee; and the modir of Jhesu was there.

² And Jhesus was clepid, and hise disciplis, to the weddyngis.

³ And whanne wijn failide, the modir of Jhesu seide to hym, Thei han not wijn.

⁴ And Jhesus seith to hir, What to me and to thee, womman? myn our cam not yit.

⁵ His modir seith to the mynystris, What euere thing he seie to you, do ye.

⁶ And there weren set `sixe stonun cannes, aftir the clensyng of the Jewis, holdynge ech tweyne ether thre metretis.

⁷ And Jhesus seith to hem, Fille ye the pottis with watir. And thei filliden hem, vp to the mouth.

⁸ And Jhesus seide to hem, Drawe ye now, and bere ye to the architriclyn. And thei baren.

⁹ And whanne the architriclyn hadde tastid the watir maad wiyn, and wiste not wherof it was, but the mynystris wisten that drowen the watir, the architriclyn clepith the spouse,

¹⁰ and seith to hym, Ech man settith first good wiyn, and whanne men ben fulfillid, thanne that that is worse; but thou hast kept the good wiyn `in to this tyme.

¹¹ Jhesus dide this the bigynnyng of signes in the Cane of Galilee, and schewide his glorie; and hise disciplis bileueden in hym.

¹² Aftir these thingis he cam doun to Cafarnaum, and his modir, and hise britheren, and hise disciplis; and thei dwelliden `there not many daies.

¹³ And the pask of Jewis was nyy, and Jhesus wente vp to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And he foond in the temple men sillynge oxun, and scheep, and culueris, and chaungeris sittynge.

¹⁵ And whanne he hadde maad as it were a scourge of smale cordis, he droof out alle of the temple, and oxun, and scheep; and he schedde the money of chaungeris, and turnede vpsedoun the boordis.

¹⁶ And he seide to hem that selden culueris, Take awei fro hennus these thingis, and nyle ye make the hous of my fadir an hous of marchaundise.

¹⁷ And hise disciplis hadden mynde, for it was writun, The feruent loue of thin hous hath etun me.

¹ And the third day a marriage happened in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there,

² and also Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage;

³ and wine having failed, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, 'Wine they have not;'

⁴ Jesus saith to her, 'What — to me and to thee, woman? not yet is mine hour come.'

⁵ His mother saith to the ministrants, 'Whatever he may say to you — do.'

⁷ Jesus saith to them, 'Fill the water-jugs with water;' and they filled them — unto the brim;

⁸ and he saith to them, 'Draw out, now, and bear to the director of the apartment;' and they bare.

⁹ And as the director of the apartment tasted the water become wine, and knew not whence it is, (but the ministrants knew, who have drawn the water,) the director of the feast doth call the bridegroom,

¹⁰ and saith to him, 'Every man, at first, the good wine doth set forth; and when they may have drunk freely, then the inferior; thou didst keep the good wine till now.'

¹¹ This beginning of the signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him;

¹⁴ and he found in the temple those selling oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the money-changers sitting,

¹⁵ and having made a whip of small cords, he put all forth out of the temple, also the sheep, and the oxen; and of the money-changers he poured out the coins, and the tables he overthrew,

¹⁶ and to those selling the doves he said, 'Take these things hence; make not the house of my Father a house of merchandise.'

¹⁷ And his disciples remembered that it is written, 'The zeal of Thy house did eat me up;'
