John 1:9-29 in American Standard Version (1901)

9 There was the true light, even the light which lighteth every man, coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father), full of grace and truth.
15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me.
16 For of his fulness we all received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19 And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent unto him from Jerusalem priests and Levites to ask him, Who art thou?
20 And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.
22 They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.
24 And they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, neither Elijah, neither the prophet?
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize in water: in the midst of you standeth one whom ye know not,
27 even he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to unloose.
28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!

John 1:9-29 in God's Living Word

9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.
10 The Word was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world didn’t recognize Him.
11 He came to His own, and those who were His own didn’t receive Him.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in His name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 The Word became flesh and lived among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as of the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John testified about Him. He cried out, saying, “This was He who I told you about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
16 From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
17 The Law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God, but God’s only born Son, who is near to the heart of His Father, has made Him known.
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed, and didn’t deny, but confessed, “I’m not the Christ.”
21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 Then they asked him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
24 Now those who were sent were Pharisees.
25 They asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but One stands among you that you don’t know.
27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”
28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Look! God’s Lamb who takes away the sin of the world!

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

John 1:9-29 in Translation for Translators

9 While John was doing that, the one who was truly like a light was about to show himself to the world. He was the one who enables all people to know about God, as a light MET enables people to know what is in the darkness.
10 Although the one who was like a light was here on the earth, and although he was the one whom God caused to create everything, most people MTY, HYP did not realize who he was. (OR, although he was the one whom God caused to create everything, most people did not accept him.)
11 Although he came to the land that belonged to him because he created it, most of his own people, the Jews, rejected him (OR, did not accept him).
12 But those of us who welcomed him, God authorized that we would have a relationship with him MET like children have a relationship with their father. We were people who believed that what he said about himself MTY was true.
13 We became like God's children, not because our ancestors belonged to God, or because of someone's sexual desires, nor because some man desired to have children like himself. Instead, we were caused by God {God caused us} to become like his children.
14 The one who expresses MET ◄ God's character/what God is like► became a human being, and he lived among us for a while. As a result, we saw how wonderful he is. He came from God his father, and there was no other person as wonderful as he. He was wonderful because he always acted ◄kindly toward us/in ways we did not deserve►, and he always spoke truthfully to us about God.
15 One day when John was telling people about him, he saw Jesus. Then he shouted to them, “I told you previously that someone will come later who is more important than I am, since he existed long before me. This is the man I was talking about!”
16 We have all benefited very much from what he has done. Again and again, he has acted in kind way toward us in ways we did not deserve.
17 Moses proclaimed God's laws to our ancestors. But what Jesus Christ did for us was much better. He acted in kindness toward us in ways we did not deserve and told us the truth about God.
18 No one has ever seen God. But God's only Son, Jesus, who has always had a very close relationship with God, has told us about God.
19 The Jewish leaders SYN in Jerusalem city sent some Jewish priests and ◄Levites/men who worked in the temple► to where John was, to ask him some questions. They said to him, “What do you claim about yourself?”
20 So John told them the truth, and he told them clearly DOU. He said, “ I am not ◄the Messiah/God's chosen king►!”
21 Then they asked him, “Then what do you say about yourself? Are you the prophet Elijah that was prophesied to return {◄ someone/another prophet► prophesied would return} before the Messiah?” He replied, “No, I am not.” Then they asked him, “Are you the prophet like Moses that ◄ we are waiting for/God promised to send►?” He replied, “No.”
22 So they asked him, “Then who do you claim to be? Tell us so that we can go back and report to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 John replied, “ I am the one the prophet Isaiah said would proclaim this new message loudly to the people who would pass by in this desolate area: ‘Prepare yourselves to receive the Lord when he comes MET, just like people prepare a road for an important official.
24 Some of those people who were questioning John were ones who had been sent by the Pharisee religious group {whom the Pharisee religious group had sent}.
25 They asked John, “Since you say you are not the Messiah, nor the prophet Elijah, nor the prophet like Moses, what authority do you have? Furthermore, why are you baptizing Jews, treating them as though they were non-Jews who wanted to become Jews?”
26 John replied, “I am just baptizing people with water to prepare them to welcome the Messiah. But right now someone is among you whom you people do not know.
27 He will preach to you after I am gone. He is so important that I am not worthy to serve him as a slave MET by untying his sandals.”
28 Those things happened at a place called Bethany, on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing people.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. He said to the people, “Look! Here is the man whom God has appointed to be a sacrifice MET, like the lambs that the people of Israel sacrificed! By sacrificing himself he will make it possible for everyone in the world to be no longer guilty for having sinned.

John 1:9-29 in Bible in Basic English

9 The true light, which gives light to every man, was then coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, the world which came into being through him, but the world had no knowledge of him.
11 He came to the things which were his and his people did not take him to their hearts.
12 To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God — that is, to those who had faith in his name:
13 Whose birth was from God and not from blood, or from an impulse of the flesh and man's desire.
14 And so the Word became flesh and took a place among us for a time; and we saw his glory — such glory as is given to an only son by his father — saw it to be true and full of grace.
15 John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me.
16 From his full measure we have all been given grace on grace.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and the true way of life are ours through Jesus Christ.
18 No man has seen God at any time; the only Son, who is on the breast of the Father, he has made clear what God is.
19 And this is the witness of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him with the question, Who are you?
20 He said quite openly and straightforwardly, I am not the Christ.
21 And they said to him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you the prophet? And his answer was, I am not.
22 So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the waste land, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.
24 Those who had been sent came from the Pharisees.
25 And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet?
26 John's answer was: I give baptism with water; but there is one among you of whom you have no knowledge;
27 It is he who is coming after me; I am not good enough to undo his shoes.
28 These things took place at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was giving baptism.
29 The day after, John sees Jesus coming to him and says, See, here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

16 for of his fulness we all have received, and grace upon grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth subsists through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has seen God at any time; the only-begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
19 And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent from Jerusalem priests and Levites that they might ask him, Thou, who art thou?
20 And he acknowledged and denied not, and acknowledged, I am not the Christ.

John 1:9-29 in The New Testament with Commentary

9 the true Light which illumines everyone who comes into the world.
10 He was in the world, the world that came into being by Him, yet the world did not know Him.
11 He came to His own things, yet His own people did not receive Him.
12 But, as many as did receive Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe into His name:
13 who were begotten, not by blood, nor by the desire of the flesh, nor by the will of a man, but by God.
14 So the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we observed His glory, glory of an Only-begotten, from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John testified about Him and called out saying: “This is He of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me is now ahead of me, because He existed before I did.’ ”
16 Now we have all received from His fullness, yes, grace upon grace.
17 Because the Law was given through Moses; the Grace and the Truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God. The Only-begotten Son, who exists in the bosom of the Father, He has interpreted Him.
19 Now this is John's testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed, he did not deny but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
21 So they asked him, “What then, are you Elijah?” And he says, “I am not.” “Are you ‘the Prophet’?” “No,” he answered.
22 So they said to him: “Who are you?—so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am ‘the voice of one calling out: “Make the Lord's road straight in the wilderness,” ’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”
24 Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
25 So they asked him saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor ‘the Prophet’?”
26 John answered them saying: “I baptize with water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
27 He is the One coming after me who is now ahead of me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”
28 These things happened in Bithabara, across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John sees Jesus coming toward him and says: “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:9-29 in Free Bible Version

9 The true light was coming into the world to give light to everyone.
10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world didn't know who he was.
11 He came to his own people, but they didn't accept him.
12 But to all those who accepted him and trusted in him, he gave the right to become God's children.
13 These are the children born not in the usual way, not as the result of human desire or a father's decision, but born of God.
14 The Word became human and lived among us, and we saw his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son, full of grace and truth.
15 John gave his testimony about him, shouting out to the people, “This is the one I was telling you about when I said, ‘The one who is coming after me is more important than me, for before I ever existed he already was.’”
16 We have all been recipients of his generous nature, one gracious gift after another.
17 The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 While no one has ever seen God, God the one and only, who is close to the Father, has shown us what God is like.
19 This is what John publicly stated when the Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 John declared plainly and clearly without hesitation, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 “So then, who are you?” they asked. “Elijah?” “No, I'm not,” he answered. “Are you the Prophet?” “No,” he replied.
22 “Well, who are you, then?” they asked. “We have to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 “I am a voice calling in the desert, ‘Make the Lord's way straight!’” he said, using the words of the prophet Isaiah.
24 The priests and Levites sent by the Pharisees
25 asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you're not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”
26 John replied, “I baptize with water, but standing among you is someone you don't know.
27 He is coming after me, but I am not even worthy to untie his sandals.”
28 This all happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John saw Jesus approaching him, and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15 John testified concerning him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, He that cometh after me, is preferred before me; for he was before me.
16 And of his fullness have we all received, and grace for grace.
17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him .
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou?
20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? and he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
22 Then said they to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.
24 And they who were sent were of the Pharisees.
25 And they asked him, and said to him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou art not that Christ, nor Elijah, neither that prophet?
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27 He it is, who coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoes' latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world.

Yochanan 1:9-29 in World Messianic Bible

9 The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him.
11 He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.
12 But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name:
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 Yochanan testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’”
16 From his fullness we all received grace upon grace.
17 For the Torah was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Yeshua the Messiah.
18 No one has seen God at any time. The only born Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.
19 This is Yochanan’s testimony, when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.”
22 They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees.
25 They asked him, “Why then do you immerse if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26 Yochanan answered them, “I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you don’t know.
27 He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.”
28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Yochanan was immersing.
29 The next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:9-29 in Young's Literal Translation

9 He was the true Light, which doth enlighten every man, coming to the world;
10 in the world he was, and the world through him was made, and the world did not know him:
11 to his own things he came, and his own people did not receive him;
12 but as many as did receive him to them he gave authority to become sons of God — to those believing in his name,
13 who — not of blood nor of a will of flesh, nor of a will of man but — of God were begotten.
14 And the Word became flesh, and did tabernacle among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of an only begotten of a father, full of grace and truth.
15 John doth testify concerning him, and hath cried, saying, 'This was he of whom I said, He who after me is coming, hath come before me, for he was before me;'
16 and out of his fulness did we all receive, and grace over-against grace;
17 for the law through Moses was given, the grace and the truth through Jesus Christ did come;
18 God no one hath ever seen; the only begotten Son, who is on the bosom of the Father — he did declare.
19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent out of Jerusalem priests and Levites, that they might question him, 'Who art thou?'
20 and he confessed and did not deny, and confessed — 'I am not the Christ.'
21 And they questioned him, 'What then? Elijah art thou?' and he saith, 'I am not.' — 'The prophet art thou?' and he answered, 'No.'
22 They said then to him, 'Who art thou, that we may give an answer to those sending us? what dost thou say concerning thyself?'
23 He said, 'I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.'
24 And those sent were of the Pharisees,
25 and they questioned him and said to him, 'Why, then, dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?'
26 John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but in midst of you he hath stood whom ye have not known, this one it is who is coming after me, who hath been before me,
27 of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the cord of his sandal.'
28 These things came to pass in Bethabara, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing,
29 on the morrow John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, 'Lo, the Lamb of God, who is taking away the sin of the world;
