John 19:25-37 in English

²⁵ These things therefore the soldiers did. But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold, thy son!

²⁷ Then saith he to the disciple, Behold, thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home.

²⁸ After this Jesus, knowing that all things are now finished, that the scripture might be accomplished, saith, I thirst.

²⁹ There was set there a vessel full of vinegar: so they put a sponge full of the vinegar upon hyssop, and brought it to his mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remain on the cross upon the sabbath (for the day of that sabbath was a high day), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

³² The soldiers therefore came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him:

³³ but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

³⁴ howbeit one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and straightway there came out blood and water.

³⁵ And he that hath seen hath borne witness, and his witness is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye also may believe.

³⁶ For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

³⁷ And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

²⁵ Now Jesus’ mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood by Jesus’ cross.

²⁶ Therefore when Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple who He sincerely loved standing by, He told His mother, “Woman, here is your son!”

²⁷ Then He told the disciple, “Here is your mother!” From that hour, that disciple took her into his own home.

²⁸ After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now accomplished, so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I’m thirsty!”

²⁹ A jar full of vinegar was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on a hyssop stalk, and lifted it up to His mouth.

³⁰ When Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, “It is finished!” Then, He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.

³¹ Because it was the Preparation Day, the Jews asked Pilate for the prisoners’ legs to be broken, and that they might be taken away, so that the bodies wouldn’t stay on the cross on the Sabbath (because that Sabbath was a special one).

³² Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other man who was crucified with Jesus,

³³ but when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they didn’t break His legs.

³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

³⁵ He who saw it has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.

³⁶ These things were done so that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.”

³⁷ Another Scripture says, “They will look on Him who they pierced.”

²⁵ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

²⁵ Near the cross where they had nailed Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and another Mary, the woman from Magdala village.

²⁶ Jesus saw his mother standing there. He also saw me standing nearby. Then he said to his mother, “This man will now be like your son.”

²⁷ And he said to me, “ Treat this woman as MET your mother.” So from that time I took her to my home and took care of her.

²⁸ Later, Jesus knew that everything that God sent him to do had now been completed {that he had now completed everything that God sent him to do}, but he knew that something else that was written in the Scriptures had to be fulfilled { that he had to fulfill something else that they had written in the Scriptures}. So he said, “I am thirsty!”

²⁹ There was a jar of sour wine there. So someone took a stalk of a plant called hyssop and fastened a sponge to it. Then he dipped the sponge into the wine and lifted it up to Jesus' lips.

³⁰ When Jesus tasted the sour wine, he shouted, “ I have finished all that I came to do!” Then he bowed his head and ◄died/handed over his spirit to God►.

³¹ That was the day that they prepared everything for their ◄ Sabbath/day of rest►. The next day was a special day of rest, because it was the day of rest during the Passover celebration. The Jewish leaders SYN did not want the bodies of the three men to remain on the cross during their ◄Sabbath/day of rest► because leaving bodies hanging overnight would be contrary to their Jewish laws. So they went to Pilate and asked him to command that the legs of the three men on the crosses be broken {the soldiers to break the legs of the three men on the crosses}, so that they would die quickly. Then their bodies could be taken down and buried {someone could take down their bodies and bury them}.

³² So, after Pilate agreed, the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man whom they had nailed on a cross near Jesus. Then they broke the legs of the second man.

³³ But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead already. So they did not break his legs.

³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear to make sure that Jesus was dead. Immediately blood clots and other liquid flowed out, which showed that Jesus was really dead.

³⁵ I, John, saw this myself, and what I am writing is true. I know that I am telling the truth, and I am saying this in order that you may believe in (OR, my testimony about) Jesus.

³⁶ These things happened in order that these words would be fulfilled {to fulfill these words} that are written in Scripture: “Not one of his bones will be broken {No one will break any of his bones}.”

³⁷ And they fulfilled another Scripture passage that has these words: ❛They will look on the one whom they have pierced❜.

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house.

²⁸ After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water.

²⁹ Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth.

³⁰ So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit.

³¹ Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

³² So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus:

³³ But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken;

³⁴ But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water.

³⁵ And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief.

³⁶ These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken.

³⁷ And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears.

²⁵ And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.

³¹ Now then, because it was Preparation Day, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews requested Pilate that their legs might be broken and they be removed.

³² Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him.

³³ But upon coming to Jesus, they did not break His legs, since they saw that He had already died.

³⁴ But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

³⁵ And the one who saw has testified, and his testimony is true (yes, he knows he is telling the truth), so that you may believe.

³⁶ Because these things happened so that the Scripture should be fulfilled: “Not a bone of His will be broken.”

²⁵ So that is what the soldiers did. Standing near the cross was Jesus' mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Mother, this is your son.”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “This is your mother.” From then on the disciple took her into his home.

²⁸ Jesus now realized that he had finished all that he had come to do. In fulfillment of Scripture, he said, “I'm thirsty.”

²⁹ A jar of wine vinegar was standing there, so they soaked a sponge in the vinegar, put it on a hyssop stick, and held it to his lips.

³⁰ After he'd had the vinegar, Jesus said, “It's finished!” Then he bowed his head and breathed his last.

³¹ It was preparation day, and the Jewish leaders didn't want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath day (in fact this was a special Sabbath), so they asked Pilate to break the legs, so that the bodies could be removed.

³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first one and then the other of those crucified with Jesus,

³³ but when they came to Jesus they saw he was already dead, so they didn't break his legs.

³⁴ However, one of the soldiers stuck a spear into his side, and blood mixed with water came out.

³⁵ The one who saw this has given this evidence, and his evidence is true. He's certain that what he says is true so you can believe it too.

³⁶ It happened like this so Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”

³⁷ and as another Scripture says, “They will look at the one they pierced.”

²⁵ Then stoode by the crosse of Iesus his mother, and his mothers sister, Marie the wife of Cleopas, and Marie Magdalene.

²⁶ And when Iesus sawe his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loued, he said vnto his mother, Woman, beholde thy sonne.

²⁷ Then saide he to the disciple, Beholde thy mother: and from that houre, the disciple tooke her home vnto him.

²⁸ After, when Iesus knew that all things were performed, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, I thirst.

²⁹ And there was set a vessell full of vineger: and they filled a spondge with vineger: and put it about an Hyssope stalke, and put it to his mouth.

³⁰ Nowe when Iesus had receiued of the vineger, he saide, It is finished, and bowed his head, and gaue vp the ghost.

³¹ The Iewes then (because it was the Preparation, that the bodies should not remaine vpon the crosse on the Sabbath day: for that Sabbath was an hie day) besought Pilate that their legges might be broken, and that they might be taken downe.

³² Then came the souldiers and brake the legges of the first, and of the other, which was crucified with Iesus.

³³ But when they came to Iesus, and saw that he was dead alreadie, they brake not his legges.

³⁴ But one of the souldiers with a speare pearced his side, and foorthwith came there out blood and water.

³⁵ And he that sawe it, bare recorde, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might beleeue it.

³⁶ For these things were done, that the Scripture shoulde be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shalbe broken.

³⁷ And againe an other Scripture saith, They shall see him whom they haue thrust through.

³¹ The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, for that sabbath was a great day, besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

³¹ The Iewes then because it was the saboth even that the bodyes shuld not remayne apon the crosse on the saboth daye (for that saboth daye was an hye daye) besought Pylate that their legges myght be broken and that they myght be taken doune.
